Abstract Purpose: To compare the polypropylene mesh (Marlex®) to Vicryl®, Parietex composite® and Ultrapro® meshes to assess the occurrence of adhesions in the intraperitoneal implantation. Methods: Sixty Wistar rats were allocated into three groups: PP+V, in which all the animals received a polypropylene and a Vicryl® mesh; PP+PC, with the implantation of polypropylene and Parietex composite® meshes and PP+UP, in which there was implantation of polypropylene and Ultrapro®. Macroscopic analysis was performed 28 days later to assess the percentage of mesh area affected by adhesion. Results: in the PP+ V group, the Vicryl® mesh showed lower adhesion formation (p=0.013). In the PP+PC, there were no differences between polypropylene and Parietex composite® (p=0.765). In the PP+UP group, Ultrapro® and polypropylene meshes were equivalent (p=0.198) . Conclusion: All the four meshes led to adhesions, with the Vicryl® mesh showing the least potential for its formation.

RESUMO Objetivo: comparar a formação de aderências intraperitoneais em ratos, com o uso de tela de polipropileno e tela composta de polipropileno e poliglecaprone. Métodos: vinte ratos Wistar machos, foram alocados em dois grupos. No grupo 1 os ratos receberam tela de polipropileno no lado direito e tela de polipropileno e poliglecaprone no lado esquerdo. No grupo 2 inverteu-se a posição das telas. Analisou-se a presença ou não de aderências após 30 dias, sendo incluídas apenas aderências sobre as telas. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise estatística, adotando-se como nível de significância p≤0,05. Resultados: todas as telas se apresentaram com aderências. Verificou-se que, na tela de polipropileno, a porcentagem de superfície coberta por aderências variou entre 10,5 a 100%, com média 34,07±24,21% enquanto que na tela de polipropileno e poliglecaprone a porcentagem de tela coberta por aderências variou entre 8,5 a 100%, com média 44,7±32,85% (p=0,12) . Conclusão: ambas as telas dão origem às aderências, não havendo vantagem de aplicação no reparo intraperitoneal de uma em relação à outra.

ABSTRACT Objective: to compare intraperitoneal adhesion formation in rats when using polypropylene and polypropylene with poliglecaprone meshes. Methods: we used twenty male, Wistar rats, divided in two groups. In group 1, the rats received the polypropylene mesh on their right side and the polypropylene with poliglecaprone mesh on their left side. In group 2 the position of the meshes was inverted. After 30 days, we analyzed the presence or not of adhesion formation, including only those over the meshes. The findings undergone an analysis through the Mann-Whitney test, at a level of significance of p≤0.05. Results: all meshes presented adhesions. We verified that, for the polypropylene meshes, the percentage of their surface covered by adhesions varied from 10.5 to 100%, with an average of 34.07±24.21%, while for the polypropylene with poliglecaprone mesh, the percentage covered by adhesions varied between 8.5% and 100%, with an average of 44.7±32.85% (p=0.12). Conclusion: both meshes lead to adhesion formation, none being superior to the other.

RESUMO A utilização da biomassa como fonte de energia alternativa tem obtido destaque por suas características energéticas, contribuição ambiental e por ser fonte de energia renovável em curto período de produção. O trabalho objetivou avaliar a produção da biomassa e sequestro de carbono de eucalipto em diferentes condições de crescimento. Foram determinadas a densidade básica da madeira, volume individual com e sem casca, biomassa seca, carbono acumulado, dióxido de carbono assimilado e estimativa energética dos componentes da parte aérea de dois clones do híbrido de E. grandis x E. urophylla aos 6 e 12 meses de idade, em diferentes espaçamentos e provenientes de duas áreas, uma irrigada e outra não irrigada. Os maiores valores de biomassa seca e massa de carbono foram provenientes dos clones nos espaçamentos mais adensados e região irrigada. O efeito da irrigação foi significativo nas variáveis estudadas apenas nos clones com 12 meses. A quantidade de CO2 assimilada no fuste, folha e galho foram maiores nos espaçamentos mais amplos e região irrigada dos clones com 12 meses. A estimativa energética do fuste aumentou com a ampliação do espaçamento. Entre os componentes arbóreos, a casca sofreu menor influência dos espaçamentos e irrigação.

ABSTRACT The use of biomass as an alternative energy source has been gaining attention because of its energy characteristics and environmental contribution and because it is renewable in short production periods. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the biomass production and carbon sequestration of eucalyptus grown under different conditions. The basic density of the wood, stem volume with and without bark and dry biomass, accumulated carbon, assimilated carbon dioxide and estimated energy for each shoot component were determined for two hybrid clones of E. grandis x E. urophylla at 6 and 12 months of age, grown at different spacing in two different areas, one with and one without irrigation. The highest dry biomass and carbon accumulation values were observed for plants grown at smaller spacing and with irrigation. A significant effect of irrigation on the variables quantified was only observed for 12-month-old plants. The amount of assimilated CO2 in the stem, leaves and branches was higher for 12-month-old plants grown at larger spacing and with irrigation. The estimated energy of the stem increased with increased spacing. Bark was the shoot component least influenced by spacing and irrigation.

RESUMO: CONTEXTO E OBJETIVOS: A acelerometria fornece medida objetiva do nível de atividade física, porém não é viável na prática clínica. Assim, foram investigados testes de aptidão física capazes de predizer inatividade física em adultos. DESENHO E LOCAL: Estudo de teste diagnóstico, desenvolvido em laboratório universitário e uma clínica de diagnósticos. MÉTODOS: 188 participantes assintomáticos tiveram o nível de atividade física avaliado por acelerometria, ergoespirometria em esteira, composição corporal por bioimpedância, função muscular isocinética, equilíbrio postural em plataforma de força e teste de caminhada de seis minutos. Foram realizadas análise descritiva e regressão logística múltipla, incluindo idade, sexo, consumo de oxigênio, gordura corporal, centro de pressão, pico de torque de quadríceps, distância percorrida no teste de caminhada de seis minutos e passos/dia no modelo como preditores da inatividade física. Adicionalmente, foram determinadas a sensibilidade (S), especificidade (Sp) e área abaixo da curva dos principais preditores por meio de curvas de característica de operação do receptor. RESULTADOS: A prevalência da inatividade física foi 14%. O número médio de passos/dia (≤ 5357) foi o melhor preditor da inatividade física (S = 99%, Sp = 82%). O melhor teste de aptidão física foi a distância no teste de caminhada de seis minutos e ≤ 96% dos valores preditos (S = 70%; Sp = 80%). A gordura corporal > 25% também foi significativa (S = 83%, Sp = 51%). Após regressão logística, passos/dia e a distância no teste de caminhada de seis minutos permaneceram preditores da inatividade física. CONCLUSÃO: O teste de caminhada de seis minutos deve ser incluído em estudos epidemiológicos como ferramenta simples e barata para triagem da inatividade física.

ABSTRACT: CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVES: Accelerometry provides objective measurement of physical activity levels, but is unfeasible in clinical practice. Thus, we aimed to identify physical fitness tests capable of predicting physical inactivity among adults. DESIGN AND SETTING: Diagnostic test study developed at a university laboratory and a diagnostic clinic. METHODS: 188 asymptomatic subjects underwent assessment of physical activity levels through accelerometry, ergospirometry on treadmill, body composition from bioelectrical impedance, isokinetic muscle function, postural balance on a force platform and six-minute walk test. We conducted descriptive analysis and multiple logistic regression including age, sex, oxygen uptake, body fat, center of pressure, quadriceps peak torque, distance covered in six-minute walk test and steps/day in the model, as predictors of physical inactivity. We also determined sensitivity (S), specificity (Sp) and area under the curve of the main predictors by means of receiver operating characteristic curves. RESULTS: The prevalence of physical inactivity was 14%. The mean number of steps/day (≤ 5357) was the best predictor of physical inactivity (S = 99%; Sp = 82%). The best physical fitness test was a distance in the six-minute walk test and ≤ 96% of predicted values (S = 70%; Sp = 80%). Body fat > 25% was also significant (S = 83%; Sp = 51%). After logistic regression, steps/day and distance in the six-minute walk test remained predictors of physical inactivity. CONCLUSION: The six-minute walk test should be included in epidemiological studies as a simple and cheap tool for screening for physical inactivity.
