Resumo: De acordo com a hipótese da liberação do inimigo (HLI), a disseminação de espécies invasoras será facilitada pela liberação de seus inimigos ao ocuparem novas áreas. No entanto, a HLI raramente é testada comparando-se as populações de espécies nativas (não invasivas, estabelecidas há muito tempo) que apresentam expansão ou alteração de habitats, com populações das mesmas espécies em habitats que foram invadidos. Testamos a HLI com relação aos níveis de parasitas no sangue (prevalência e intensidade de Plasmodium spp. e Haemoproteus spp.). De (a) duas espécies estreitamente relacionadas e amplamente distribuídas de Turdus (Turdus leucomelas e T. merula), e (b) um pardal invasor (Passer domesticus) cujo alcance se expandiu do Velho Mundo para o Novo Mundo desde o século 18. Um total de 158 aves foram amostradas em Portugal e 99 no Brasil. Todas as espécies foram parasitadas e 55% dos indivíduos foram parasitados, sendo que a intensidade média da infecção foi de 28 parasitas por 10.000 eritrócitos. Avaliamos se as diferenças nos níveis de infecção (prevalência e intensidade) foram devidas ao local (tropical/Novo Mundo e temperado/Velho Mundo) ou espécies hospedeiras. A HLI foi corroborada: Passer domesticus e Turdus merula apresentaram valores mais elevados de parasitismo no Velho Mundo do que no Novo Mundo. Assim, P. domesticus parece estar se beneficiando de sua expansão "recente" em comparação com T. leucomelas, através da liberação ecológica de seus parasitas nativos porque os parasitas da área recentemente invadida parecem infestar espécies nativas.

Abstract: According to the enemy release hypothesis (ERH) the spread of invasive species will be facilitated by release from their enemies as they occupy new areas. However, the ERH has rarely been tested by comparing populations of native (non-invasive, long established) species with expanding or shifting ranges, to the same species as invasive in another area. We tested the ERH with respect to blood parasite levels (prevalence and intensity of Plasmodium spp. and Haemoproteus spp.) of (a) two closely related, widely distributed species of thrush (Turdus leucomelas and T. merula), and (b) an invasive sparrow (Passer domesticus) whose range has expanded from the Old World to the New World since the 18th century. A total of 158 birds were sampled in Portugal and 99 in Brazil. All bird species were parasitized, and 55% of the individuals collected were parasitized, and the mean intensity of infection was of 28 parasites per 10,000 erythrocytes. We assessed whether differences in levels of infection (prevalence and intensity) were due to site (tropical/New World and temperate/Old World) or host species. The ERH was supported: Passer domesticus and Turdus merula had higher levels of parasitism in the Old World than in the New World. Thus, P. domesticus seems to be benefitting from its "recent" range expansion, compared to T. leucomelas, through ecological release from its native parasites and because the parasites of the recently invaded area seem to be infesting native species instead.

ABSTRACT During flight, hummingbirds achieve the maximum aerobic metabolism rates within vertebrates. To meet such demands, these birds have to take in as much energy as possible, using strategies such as selecting the best food resources and adopting behaviors that allow the greatest energy gains. We tested whether hummingbirds choose sources that have higher sugar concentrations, and investigated their behaviors near and at food resources. The study was conducted at Atlantic forest remnant in Brazil, between June and December 2012. Four patches were provided with artificial feeders, containing sucrose solutions at concentrations of 5%, 15%, 25% and 35% weight/volume. Hummingbird behaviors were recorded using the ad libitum method with continuous recording of behaviors. The following species were observed: the Brazilian ruby Clytolaema rubricauda (Boddaert, 1783), Violet-capped woodnymph Thalurania glaucopis (Gmelin, 1788), Scale-throated hermit Phaethornis eurynome (Lesson, 1832), White-throated hummingbird Leucochloris albicollis (Vieillot, 1818), Versicoloured emerald Amazilia versicolor (Vieillot, 1818), Glittering-bellied emerald Chlorostilbon lucidus (Shaw, 1812) and other Phaethornis spp. C. rubricauda, P. eurynome and Phaethornis spp. visited the 35%-sucrose feeders more often, while the T. glaucopis visited the 25%-sucrose feeders more often. L. albicollis and A. versicolor visited more often solutions with sugar concentration of 15%. C. lucidus visited all patches equally. Three behavioral strategies were observed: 1) C. rubricauda and T. glaucopis exhibited interspecific and intraspecific dominance; 2) the remaining species exhibited subordinance to the dominant hummingbirds, and 3) P. eurynome and Phaethornis spp. adopted a hide-and-wait strategy to the dominant hummingbird species. The frequency of aggressive behaviors was correlated with the time the hummingbird spent feeding, and bird size. Our results showed that hummingbirds can adopt different strategies to enhance food acquisition; that more aggressive species feeding more than less aggressive species; and that the birds, especially if they were dominant species, visited high quality food resources more often.

ABSTRACT Objective To ascertain whether modifiable physical performance–based measurements predicted 5.5-year mortality in a riparian elderly cohort in the Amazon rainforest region. Methods A longitudinal study evaluating the impact of functional determinants on 5.5-year mortality in a riparian elderly cohort from Maués City in the state of Amazonas, Brazil, was performed. The study was a follow-up of a previous observational investigation that evaluated various fitness tests in 630 Amazonian riparian elderly (291 males and 339 females) aged 72.3 ± 8.0 (60–99) years old. The cohort was selected for its adverse environmental conditions, which increased the risk of falls yet required maintenance of good physical condition for carrying out relatively rigorous daily activities, and restricted access to specialized health services. Official death records were obtained from the Maués Municipal Health Department. Results A total of 80 study participants (12.7%) died over the 5.5-year study period. Kaplan-Meier regression analysis showed significant association between Timed Up and Go (TUG) test scores ≥ 14 seconds and mortality risk, independent of sex, age, and other health variables. Conclusions The study results suggest that the TUG test can be used as an indicator for initiating therapeutic and preventive actions, including conducting exercises or physical activities adapted to the health and functional conditions of the elderly, by identifying elderly people with a higher relative risk of mortality.

RESUMEN Objetivo Evaluar si los parámetros modificables del rendimiento físico permiten predecir la mortalidad a 5,5 años en una cohorte de ancianos de las zonas ribereñas de la selva tropical del Amazonas. Métodos En este estudio longitudinal se evaluó la influencia de los determinantes de la capacidad funcional sobre la mortalidad a 5,5 años en una cohorte de ancianos de la ciudad ribereña de Maués del estado de Amazonas (Brasil). El estudio consistió en un seguimiento de una investigación observacional anterior en la que se efectuaron diversas pruebas para determinar el estado físico de 630 ancianos de las zonas ribereñas del Amazonas (291 hombres y 339 mujeres) de 72,3 años de edad ± 8,0 (60-99) años. La cohorte fue seleccionada en función de las condiciones ambientales adversas, que aumentan el riesgo de caídas pero exigen un buen estado físico para llevar adelante las actividades relativamente rigurosas de la vida cotidiana, así como del acceso limitado a servicios de salud especializados. Los certificados de defunción oficiales se obtuvieron del Ministerio de Salud del Municipio de Maués. Resultados En el transcurso del estudio, que tuvo una duración de 5,5 años, fallecieron 80 participantes (12,7 %). El análisis de regresión de Kaplan-Meier reveló una relación significativa entre los valores de la prueba cronometrada de levantarse y caminar (TUG) ≥ 14 segundos y el riesgo de mortalidad, que fue independiente del sexo, la edad y demás variables de salud. Conclusiones Los resultados de este estudio indican que la prueba TUG puede emplearse como indicador de la necesidad de instituir medidas terapéuticas y preventivas, como ejercicios o actividades físicas adaptadas a la salud y el estado funcional de los ancianos, dado que permite detectar a aquellos que están expuestos a un riesgo relativo de muerte más alto.

Introduction: In the context of radiotherapy, control of breakthrough cancer pain (BTPc) is particularly challenging. BTPc has been defined by the Spanish Society of Pain (SED), the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) and the Spanish Society for Palliative Care (SECPAL) as a sudden and transient exacerbation of pain of great intensity (VAS > 7) and short (less than 20-30 minutes), which appears on the basis of a stable persistent pain when it is reduced to a tolerable level (VAS < 5) by using major opioids. Objectives: The main objective of this study was to assess the intensity of BTPc induced by cancer treatments that included radiotherapy (RT), both exclusive and associated with chemotherapy (RT/CT). Secondly, the efficacy of treatment was evaluated with fentanyl sublingual scheduled for BTPc control. Material and methods: Retrospective, observational study in 110 patients recruited in 19 Spanish Radiotherapy Services. Patients must have BTPc induced by RT or RT/CT, with or without medication prescribed and with an intensity outside a VAS > 6 in the last 24-48 h. Controls were established at baseline and at 3, 7, 15 and 30 days. Results: There was a decrease in mean values ??on the VAS scale as the study progressed (VAS = 6 in the control 0 to VAS = 3 in the control 3) and the differences were significant (p < 0.0001). Treatment satisfaction was rated as good or excellent by 85.3% of patients and 92.7% of researches. Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate the efficacy of BTPc treatment with sublingual fentanyl in the context of the radiotherapy cancer treatment, with a significant decrease in VAS from baseline values??. The high satisfaction among physicians and patients with this treatment reflects the efficacy and convenience of sublingual fentanyl in controlling BTPc.

Introducción: en el contexto de la radioterapia, el control del dolor irruptivo oncológico (DIO) supone un reto especial. El DIO ha sido definido por la Sociedad Española del Dolor (SED), la Sociedad Española de Oncología Médica (SEOM) y la Sociedad Española de Cuidados Paliativos (SECPAL) como una exacerbación del dolor súbita y transitoria, de gran intensidad (EVA > 7) y de corta duración (inferior a 20-30 minutos), que aparece sobre la base de un dolor persistente estable cuando este se encuentra reducido a un nivel tolerable (EVA < 5) mediante el uso de opioides mayores. Objetivos: el objetivo principal de este estudio fue evaluar la intensidad del DIO inducido por tratamientos oncológicos que incluyeran radioterapia (RT), tanto exclusiva como asociada a quimioterapia (RT/QT). Secundariamente, se evaluó la eficacia del tratamiento con fentanilo sublingual pautado para el control del DIO. Material y métodos: estudio observacional retrospectivo realizado en 110 pacientes reclutados en 19 Servicios de Radioterapia españoles. Los pacientes debían presentar DIO inducido por RT o RT/QT, con o sin medicación pautada y cuya intensidad fuera de una EVA > 6 en las últimas 24-48 h. Se establecieron controles en el momento basal, y a los 3, 7, 15 y 30 días. Resultados: se apreció un descenso en la media de los valores en la escala EVA según avanzó el estudio (EVA = 6 en el control 0 a EVA = 3 en el control 3), y las diferencias fueron significativas (p < 0,0001). La satisfacción con el tratamiento fue calificada como buena o excelente por el 85,3% de los pacientes y por el 92,7% de los investigadores. Conclusiones: los resultados de este estudio demuestran la eficacia del tratamiento del DIO con fentanilo sublingual en el contexto del tratamiento oncológico radioterápico, con un descenso significativo en los valores EVA frente al valor basal. La elevada satisfacción de los médicos y pacientes con este tratamiento refleja la eficacia y la comodidad del fentanilo sublingual en el control del DIO.

Este trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito do fungo Aspergillus niger, linhagem CCT4355, na liberação de nutrientes contidos em pós de dois tipos de rocha (fonolito e diabásio), por meio de ensaios de solubilização in vitro. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 5x4, com três repetições. Foram avaliados cinco tratamentos (pó de fonolito + meio; pó de fonolito + fungo + meio, pó de diabásio + meio, pó de diabásio + fungo + meio e fungo + meio) e quatro épocas de amostragens (0, 10, 20 e 30 dias). Adicionou-se pó de rocha (0,4% m/v) a Erlenmeyers de 125 mL, com 50 mL de meio de cultura líquido adaptado para A. niger. Os frascos foram incubados a 30 °C, por 30 dias, e foram feitas análises de pH em água, acidez titulável e teores de potássio, cálcio, magnésio, zinco, ferro e manganês solúveis. O A. niger foi capaz de produzir ácidos orgânicos que solubilizaram íons. Este resultado indica o potencial de A. niger para alterar minerais contidos em pós de rocha, com capacidade de interagir de diferentes formas com os nutrientes. Houve aumento significativo da quantidade de K solúvel, no tratamento com pó de fonolito, em presença do fungo. Conclui-se que a linhagem CCT4355 de A. niger pode solubilizar minerais contidos nesses pós de rochas.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the fungus Aspergillus niger strain CCT4355 in the release of nutrients contained in two types of rock powder (diabase and phonolite) by means of in vitro solubilization trials. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 5 x 4 factorial design with three replications. It was evaluated five treatments (phonolite dust + culture medium; phonolite dust + fungus + culture medium; diabase powder + culture medium; diabase powder + fungus + culture medium and fungus + culture medium) and four sampling dates (0, 10, 20 and 30 days). Rock dust (0.4% w/v) was added to 125 mL Erlenmeyer flasks containing 50 mL of liquid culture medium adapted to A. niger. The flasks were incubated at 30°C for 30 days, and analysis of pH (in water), titratable acidity, and concentrations of soluble potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron and manganese were made. The fungus A. niger was able to produce organic acids that solubilized ions. This result indicates its potential to alter minerals contained in rock dust, with the ability to interact in different ways with the nutrients. A significant increase in the amount of K was found in the treatment with phonolite dust in the presence of the fungus. The strain CCT4355 of A. niger can solubilize minerals contained in these rocks dust.

Objetivo : Este estudo avalia polimorfismos (SNPs) do NR3C1 na população brasileira, que possui origem étnica heterogênea. Materiais e métodos : SNPs do NR3C1 foram avaliados em brasileiros de ancestralidade caucasiana, africana ou japonesa (n = 380). Em um subgrupo (n = 40), os genótipos foram comparados à sensibilidade aos glicocorticoides (GC), previamente avaliada por cortisol plasmático (PF) e salivar (SF) após supressão com dexametasona (DEX), ensaio de afinidade do receptor ao GC (K d ) e inibição por DEX de 50% da proliferação de mononucleares estimulada por concanavalina-A (IC 50 ). Discriminação alélica de p.N363S (rs6195), p.ER22/23EK (rs6189-6190) e BclI (rs41423247) foi realizada por PCR em tempo real. Éxons 3 a 9 e transições éxon/íntron foram amplificados e sequenciados. Resultados : Frequências genotípicas (%) foram: rs6195 (n = 380; AA:96,6/AG:3,14/GG:0,26), rs6189-6190 (n = 264; GG:99,6/GA:0,4), rs41423247 (n = 264; CC:57,9/CG:34,1/GG:8,0), rs6188 (n = 155; GG:69,6/GT:25,7/TT:4,7), rs258751 (n = 150; CC:88,0/CT:10,7/TT:1,3), rs6196 (n = 176; TT:77,2/TC:20,4/CC:2,4), rs67300719 (n = 137; CC:99,3/CT:0,7), e rs72542757 (n = 137; CC:99,3/CG:0,7). Enquanto rs67300719 e rs72542757 foram exclusivos dos nipodescendentes, p.N363S e p.ER22/23EK estavam ausentes nesses indivíduos. p.ER22/23EK foi exclusivo dos descendentes de caucasianos. Equilíbrio de Hardy-Weinberg foi observado, exceto nos nipodescendentes para rs6188 e rs258751 e nos afrodescendentes para p.N363S. K d , IC 50 , PF ou SF basal ou após DEX foram semelhantes entre os genótipos. Entretanto, a dose média de DEX que suprimiu PF ou SF diferiu entre os genótipos BclI (P = 0,03), sendo maior nos carreadores GG (0,7 ± 0,2 mg) comparada aos GC (0,47 ± 0,2 mg) e CC (0,47 ± 0,1 mg). Conclusão : As frequências genotípicas dos SNPS de NR3C1 na população brasileira são semelhantes a outras populações. BclI foi associado à alteração da sensibilidade ao GC no eixo hipófise-adrenal.

Objective : The Brazilian population has heterogeneous ethnicity. No previous study evaluated NR3C1 polymorphisms in a Brazilian healthy population. Materials and methods : We assessed NR3C1 polymorphisms in Brazilians of Caucasian, African and Asian ancestry (n = 380). In a subgroup (n = 40), we compared the genotypes to glucocorticoid (GC) sensitivity, which was previously evaluated by plasma (PF) and salivary (SF) cortisol after dexamethasone (DEX) suppression tests, GC receptor binding affinity (K d ), and DEX-50% inhibition (IC 50 ) of concanavalin-A-stimulated mononuclear cell proliferation. p.N363S (rs6195), p.ER22/23EK (rs6189-6190), and BclI (rs41423247) allelic discrimination was performed by Real-Time PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). Exons 3 to 9 and exon/intron boundaries were amplified by PCR and sequenced. Results : Genotypic frequencies (%) were: rs6195 (n = 380; AA:96.6/AG:3.14/GG:0.26), rs6189-6190 (n = 264; GG:99.6/GA:0.4), rs41423247 (n = 264; CC:57.9/CG:34.1/GG:8.0), rs6188 (n = 155; GG:69.6/GT:25.7/TT:4.7), rs258751 (n = 150; CC:88.0/CT:10.7/TT:1.3), rs6196 (n = 176; TT:77.2/TC:20.4/CC:2.4), rs67300719 (n = 137; CC:99.3/CT:0.7), and rs72542757 (n = 137; CC:99.3/CG:0.7). The rs67300719 and rs72542757 were found only in Asian descendants, in whom p.N363S and p.ER22/23EK were absent. The p.ER22/23EK was observed exclusively in Caucasian descendants. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was observed, except in the Asian for rs6188 and rs258751, and in the African for p.N363S. The K d , IC 50 , baseline and after DEX PF or SF did not differ between genotype groups. However, the mean DEX dose that suppressed PF or SF differed among the BclI genotypes (P = 0.03). DEX dose was higher in GG- (0.7 ± 0.2 mg) compared to GC- (0.47 ± 0.2 mg) and CC-carriers (0.47 ± 0.1 mg). Conclusion : The genotypic frequencies of NR3C1 polymorphisms in Brazilians are similar to worldwide populations. Additionally, the BclI polymorphism was associated with altered pituitary-adrenal axis GC sensitivity.

Objetive. To analyze the effects of a multidisciplinary program of obesity treatment (PMTO) on risk factors for metabolic syndrome (MS) in children and adolescents at prepubertal, pubertal and adolescents stages according to gender. Method. The study included 69 obese children and adolescents aged 10 to 18 years. They were allocated to the intervention group (GI) (n = 37) and control group (GC) (n = 32). There were 23 girls in GI and 14 in GC. The GI was submitted to the multidisciplinary intervention, lasting 16 weeks. It was assessed anthropometric parameters, cardiorespiratory fitness and risk factor for MS. Results. We found that the GI achieved a reduction in the prevalence of MS (7.1 % for boys and 8.7 % for girls), and in GC a maintenance for girls and increasing for boys. For dyslipidemia, a reduction in GI for both genders (boys 78.6 % to 71.4 %; girls 82.6 % to 65.2 %), and increasing in GC for both genders. GI Girls had significant improvements for the variables, body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference and insulin sensibility which was not observed in GI boys who increased lean body mass. Conclusion. The findings show that 16 weeks of multidisciplinary intervention based on cognitive behavioral therapy are sufficient to promote decreasing in the prevalence of MS and dyslipidemia in obese children and adolescents.

Objetivo. Analizar los efectos de un programa multidisciplinar de tratamiento de la obesidad (PMTO) sobre los factores de riesgo del Síndrome Metabólico (SM) en niños prepúberes, púberes y adolescentes de acuerdo con el género. Método. Participaron en el estudio 69 niños y adolescentes obesos entre 10 y 18 años de edad divididos en dos grupos: grupo de intervención (GI) (n = 37) y grupo control (GC) (n = 32). En el GI había 23 niñas, en el GC 14. El GI fue sometido a intervención multidisciplinar, con duración de 16 semanas. Se evaluaron parámetros antropométricos, aptitud cardiorrespiratoria y factores de riesgo para SM. Resultados. Se observó que el GI obtuvo reducción en la prevalencia de SM (- 35,8 % para género masculino y - 8,7 % para femenino), entre tanto se mantuvo el valor en las niñas del grupo GC y aumentó en los niños del GC (+ 11,1 %). En relación a dislipidemias, hubo una reducción en el GI para ambos géneros (- 7,2 % para el masculino; - 17,4 % para el femenino), y para el GC se observó aumento para el masculino (+ 22,2 %) y femenino (14,3 %). Las niñas del GI tuvieron mejoras significativas para las variables índice de masa corporal, circunferencia de cintura y cadera, y sensibilidad a la insulina, que no fueron observadas en el género masculino del GI, que presentaron aumento de masa magra. Conclusión. Los resultados del estudio muestran que 16 semanas de intervención multidisciplinar, basada en una terapia cognitivo-conductual, son suficientes para promover reducción de la prevalencia de SM y dislipidemias en niños y adolescentes obesos.

OBJECTIVES: Idiopathic central precocious puberty and its postponement with a (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) GnRH agonist are complex conditions, the final effects of which on bone mass are difficult to define. We evaluated bone mass, body composition, and bone remodeling in two groups of girls with idiopathic central precocious puberty, namely one group that was assessed at diagnosis and a second group that was assessed three years after GnRH agonist treatment. METHODS: The precocious puberty diagnosis and precocious puberty treatment groups consisted of 12 girls matched for age and weight to corresponding control groups of 12 (CD) and 14 (CT) girls, respectively. Bone mineral density and body composition were assessed by dual X-ray absorptiometry. Lumbar spine bone mineral density was estimated after correction for bone age and the mathematical calculation of volumetric bone mineral density. CONEP: CAAE-0311.0.004.000-06. RESULTS: Lumbar spine bone mineral density was slightly increased in individuals diagnosed with precocious puberty compared with controls; however, after correction for bone age, this tendency disappeared (CD = -0.74 + 0.9 vs. precocious puberty diagnosis = -1.73 + 1.2). The bone mineral density values of girls in the precocious puberty treatment group did not differ from those observed in the CT group. CONCLUSION: There is an increase in bone mineral density in girls diagnosed with idiopathic central precocious puberty. Our data indicate that the increase in bone mineral density in girls with idiopathic central precocious puberty is insufficient to compensate for the marked advancement in bone age observed at diagnosis. GnRH agonist treatment seems to have no detrimental effect on bone mineral density.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver e validar um modelo matemático para estimar a duração do ciclo do algodoeiro (Gossypium hirsutum L. r. latifolium hutch) no Estado de Goiás, aplicando o método de graus-dia (GD) e considerando sua variação espaçotemporal. O modelo foi desenvolvido por meio de combinação linear entre altitude, latitude, longitude e a variação temporal, representada pela série trigonométrica incompleta de Fourier. Os parâmetros do modelo foram ajustados, por meio de regressão linear múltipla, aos dados de GD para o algodoeiro, acumulados entre 15°C e 40°C. Os dados utilizados de temperaturas máxima e mínima foram obtidos de séries históricas de 21 estações meteorológicas, com períodos de observações variando entre 8 e 24 anos. A validação do modelo foi feita comparando-se a duração da fase entre a emergência e 90% de capulhos abertos de cultivares de algodoeiros plantados em lavouras comerciais. O coeficiente de determinação resultante do ajuste do modelo aos dados observados foi de 0,84. Os resultados dessa comparação mostraram que o modelo proposto teve um desempenho muito bom, conforme indicado pelo coeficiente de correlação de Pearson de 0,90 e o índice de concordância de Willmott de 0,94, que resultaram em um índice de desempenho de 0,85.

The objective of this work was to develop and validate a mathematical model to estimate the duration of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. r. latifolium hutch) cycle in the State of Goiás, Brazil, by applying the method of growing degree-days (GD), and considering, simultaneously, its time-space variation. The model was developed as a linear combination of elevation, latitude, longitude, and Fourier series of time variation. The model parameters were adjusted by using multiple-linear regression to the observed GD accumulated with air temperature in the range of 15°C to 40°C. The minimum and maximum temperature records used to calculate the GD were obtained from 21 meteorological stations, considering data varying from 8 to 20 years of observation. The coefficient of determination, resulting from the comparison between the estimated and calculated GD along the year was 0.84. Model validation was done by comparing estimated and measured crop cycle in the period from cotton germination to the stage when 90 percent of bolls were opened in commercial crop fields. Comparative results showed that the model performed very well, as indicated by the Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.90 and Willmott agreement index of 0.94, resulting in a performance index of 0.85.

The selection of lines has been the main strategy of genetic improvement in meat rabbits. The paternal lines are selected for average daily gain or weight to the age of slaughter, both related to the feed conversion index. For the maternal lines prevails like criterion of selection the litter size to the birth or upon weaning, and more recently indirect methods as the rate of ovulation. Intensive meat production in rabbits is based on a three way crossbreeding scheme. The first crossing includes two maternal lines generating females F1, a second crossing consists of the utilization of male of a third paternal line, the born individuals of this crossing are destined to slaughter. The estimation of genetic parameters for different populations has been object of study in different productive clusters in order to establish in each case the characteristics to include in the plans of improvement. The values of heritability observed by diverse authors for litter size are similar (0.05 to 0.14) while for the variables related to the weaning weight, the discrepancies among the authors are greater (0.03 to 0.72).

La selección de líneas ha sido la principal estrategia de mejoramiento genético en conejos para carne. Las líneas paternas son seleccionadas por ganancia diaria pos - destete o peso a la edad de faena, ambas relacionadas con el índice de conversión. Para las líneas maternas prevalece como criterio de selección el tamaño de la camada al nacimiento o al destete y, más recientemente, métodos indirectos como la tasa de ovulación. La producción intensiva de conejos para carne está basada en un esquema de cruzamientos de, al menos, tres vías: el primer cruzamiento incluye dos líneas maternas generando hembras F1, un segundo cruzamiento consiste en la utilización de machos de una tercera línea paterna y los individuos nacidos de este cruzamiento serán los que se destinan a faena. La estimación de parámetros genéticos para distintas poblaciones ha sido objeto de estudio en diferentes núcleos productivos con el fin de establecer en cada caso las características a incluir en los planes de mejora. Los valores de heredabilidad observados por diversos autores para tamaño de camada nacida viva son similares (0,05 a 0,14) mientras que para las variables relacionadas con el peso pos - destete, las discrepancias entre los autores son mayores (0,03 a 0,72).

Assim sendo, revisamos os conceitos de perspectiva de estudo, horizonte analítico, custos e taxa de desconto. Além disso, identificamos as características dos estudos de custo-minimização, custo-efetividade, custo-utilidade e custo-benefício acompanhados de exemplos, descrevemos os principais desenhos de estudos econômicos, discutimos o uso de modelos matemáticos e examinamos a importância da análise de sensibilidade. Nas considerações finais, abordamos a incorporação da avaliação econômica em saúde no Brasil.

The role of economic evaluation in health is to optimize the benefits of available resources. This article aims to allow readers to identify the basic characteristics and types of economic evaluation in health and understand its methods, with an emphasis on infectious diseases. We thus review the following concepts: study perspective, analytic scope, costs, and discount rate. We also focus on characteristics of cost-minimization, cost-effectiveness, cost-utility, and cost-benefit analyses, with examples. The article describes the most popular study designs for economic evaluation, discusses different models, and examines the importance of sensitivity analysis. Our final comments address the importance of adopting economic evaluations in health in Brazil.

A ausência de estações pluviográficas e de séries históricas longas tem levado os engenheiros a utilizarem de relações que permitam a estimativa da chuva crítica de projeto, com base em dados de pluviômetros. Com o objetivo de avaliar o desempenho das metodologias da desagregação, isozonas e de Bell, empregadas na estimativa das precipitações máximas associadas a uma duração e freqüência, empregaram-se séries históricas diárias de chuva disponíveis para alguns municípios do Estado de Goiás. Avaliou-se o desempenho dos modelos através do coeficiente de Willmott que permite a análise porcentual dos desvios entre os valores estimados e os obtidos pelas relações precipitação-duração-frequência, ajustadas a partir de pluviogramas. Dentre as metodologias alternativas avaliadas, a das isozonas apresentou o melhor desempenho, seguida do método da desagregação. O método de Bell mostrou-se adequado na estimativa das precipitações máximas de curta duração, o que representa uma alternativa na determinação das chuvas críticas de projeto.

The absence of pluviographs at rainfall stations and of long historical rainfall series has made engineers use methods to estimate critical rainfall based on pluviometer data. Daily observational rainfall series, available in some cities in Goiás, were used to evaluate the performance of three methods used to estimate maximum rainfall associated with its duration and frequency: rainfall disaggregation, isozones and Bell's method. The performance of the three methods was evaluated using the Willmott performance index, which allows the analysis of the differences between values estimated by the methods and those obtained from precipitation-duration-frequency relations adjusted using pluviograms. Among the three methods, isozones presented better performance, followed by rainfall disaggregation. Bell's method was adequate at estimating maximum rainfall with small durations, representing an interesting alternative for estimating critical rainfall for engineering projects.

A numerical investigation was performed to evaluate distinct convective heat transfer coefficients for three discrete strip heat sources flush mounted to a wall of a parallel plates channel. Uniform heat flux was considered along each heat source, but the remaining channel surfaces were assumed adiabatic. A laminar airflow with constant properties was forced into the channel considering either developed flow or a uniform velocity at the channel entrance. The conservation equations were solved using the finite volumes method together with the SIMPLE algorithm. The convective coefficients were evaluated considering three possibilities for the reference temperature. The first was the fluid entrance temperature into the channel, the second was the flow mixed mean temperature just upstream any heat source, and the third option employed the adiabatic wall temperature concept. It is shown that the last alternative gives rise to an invariant descriptor, the adiabatic heat transfer coefficient, which depends solely on the flow and the geometry. This is very convenient for the thermal analysis of electronic equipment, where the components' heating is discrete and can be highly non-uniform.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo conhecer a fauna flebotomínica na Gruta do Caboclo, localizada no Parque Nacional Cavernas do Peruaçu, MG, e associá-la ao risco de transmissão das leishmanioses. As capturas foram realizadas utilizando-se armadilhas luminosas tipo CDC, nos meses de fevereiro e março de 2003. O total de 436 flebotomíneos foi capturado, pertencendo a 14 espécies. A espécie predominante foi Lutzomyia ischnacantha Martins, Souza & Falcão, com 28,7%, seguida por L. renei (27,06%) e L. cavernicola (13,07%). O encontro de L. intermedia, espécie incriminada como vetora de leishmaniose cutânea, deve ser levado em consideração.

We surveyed the phlebotomine fauna in the Parque Nacional Cavernas Do Peruaçu, Minas Gerais, Brazil, aiming to associate the presence of vector with the risk of leishmaniasis transmission. Field captures were performed with CDC light traps between February and March 2003. A total of 436 sand flies were captured, belonging to 14 species. The predominant species (28.7%) was Lutzomyia ischnacantha Martins, Souza e Falcão, followed by L. renei (27,06%) and L. cavernicola (13,07%). The finding of L. intermedia, a species that is incriminated as vector of the cutaneous leishmaniasis, has to be taken into account.
