Abstract The presence of unsaturated flow in tropical lateritic soils of unknown hydromechanical behavior may lead to severe geotechnical problems. It is known that soil-water characteristic curves (SWCC) are a valuable tool to define this behavior and facilitate the suction estimation, acting on tests performed with no control of such parameter. This article aimed to determine and model the SWCC for 3 unprecedented tropical soils, in the undisturbed and the compacted conditions, from the Paraná state, located in the south of Brazil. The soils studied are one clay and two sands, all lateritic. The pressure plate and the filter paper methods were used to determine the SWCC. The samples were carved and submitted to the drying paths. Furthermore, Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) tests were performed in samples of the studied soils in order to obtain the pore size distribution (PSD), contributing to the bimodal definition of curves and the prediction of SWCC main parameters. Both techniques (pressure plate and filter paper) were combined and the SWCC was adjusted by Gitirana & Fredlund model, which efficiently represents the shape of the traditional curves for tropical soils. Furthermore, the SWCCs were predicted by PSD and obtained satisfactory numerical fits. All SWCC presented air entry values in the macropores that are characteristic of soils as the lateritic, given that its structure was considered a key factor in the shape of the curves.

Abstract A highly efficient tool that has stood out in data processing and treatment is Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). Self-organized maps (SOM), which is a type of ANNs, are easy-to-view computational models that simulate information processing and knowledge acquisition. Applying this tool, we analyzed the behavior of the film formed on the mozzarella cheese surface when subjected to salting by immersion. In order to reduce the amount of NaCl in the food, KCl was used as a partial substitute in adequate amounts, without causing sensory changes in the cheese. The diffusion of salts in the brine is caused by the transfer of sodium and potassium ions, induced by concentration gradient of these salts inside and outside the food. The application of artificial neural networks proved to be an effective tool in the evaluation of the influence of the film on the diffusion process of Na+ and K+ ions, in the mozzarella cheese salting.

ABSTRACT The seed of Araucaria angustifolia is largely produced and consumed in Parana state, Brazil. It has an estimated annual consumption of approximately 0.167 kg per capita. The samples of seeds were acquired in 8 different commercial points of Londrina city in the state of Paraná, Brazil. To determine the natural level of radiation and elemental composition were analysed the seed pulp and peels, to determine the level of radiation in these samples and to calculate the effective dose per intake, the gamma ray spectrometry was applied using the HPGe detector with a 60% relative efficiency, and the X-rays Fluorescent by Dispersive Energy (EDXRF) was applied for elemental identification of the composition with a spectrometer from Shimadzu EDX-720 model. The samples were qualitatively analyzed by EDXRF, where the elements K, Fe, Cu, Zn, Rb, Ca, P, Mg and Sr were found in pulp and peels of seed, however, the elements Mg and Sr were detected only in the peel samples. The results obtained by gamma spectrometry showed that the radioactive activities in the Araucaria angustifolia pulp per kilogram in nature, for 226Ra ranged from 0.691 to 2.269 Bq/kg, the interval activity measured for the 228Ra were 0.386 to 1.767 Bq/kg and the 40K were 283.405 to 1,536.820 Bq/kg. Activities of 137Cs were detected in the pulp and peels of seed. The average dose per intake was 0.68 µSv/year for 226Ra and 0.35 µSv/year for 228Ra.

RESUMEN La semilla de Araucaria angustifolia es producida y consumida en gran medida en el estado de Paraná, Brasil. Tiene un consumo anual estimado aproximado de 0.167 kg per cápita. Las muestras de semillas fueron adquiridas en 8 puntos comerciales diferentes de la ciudad de Londrina en el estado de Paraná, Brasil. Para determinar el nivel de radiación natural y la composición elemental, se analizaron la pulpa y las cáscaras de las semillas, para determinar el nivel de radiación y dosis efectiva por ingesta, se aplicó la espectrometría de rayos gamma utilizando el detector HPGe con un 60% eficiencia relativa, se utilizó fluorescencia de rayos X por energía dispersiva (EDXRF) para la identificación elemental de la composición con un espectrómetro fabricado por Shimadzu modelo EDX-720. Las muestras fueron analizadas cualitativamente por EDXRF, donde los elementos K, Fe, Cu, Zn, Rb, Ca, P, Mg y Sr se encontraron en la pulpa y cascara de las semillas, sin embargo, los elementos Mg y Sr se detectaron solo en las cascaras de la semilla. Los resultados obtenidos por espectrometría gamma muestran que las pulpas de Araucaria angustifolia in natura por kg, poseen actividades de 226Ra en el rango fue 0.69 a 2.26 Bq/kg, para el 228Ra el rango fue de 0.38 a 1.76 Bq/kg, para el 40K el rango de actividad fue de 283.40 a 1,536.82 Bq/kg. Se detectaron actividades de 137Cs en la pulpa y las cáscaras de semillas. La dosis promedio por ingesta fue de 0,68 µSv/año para el 226Ra y 0.35 µSv/año para el 228Ra.

Um estudo foi realizado para avaliar a associação dos níveis de radioatividade, selênio e aflatoxinas em castanha-do-Brasil descascada, que foram classificadas em diferentes tamanhos, para exportação. As determinações de selênio foram realizadas por espectrometria de emissão óptica com plasma indutivamente acoplado (LOQ=3,0 µg kg-1) e aflatoxinas foram detectadas por LC-MSMS (LOQ=0,85 µg kg-1), as taxas de recuperação ficaram entre 92 e 100%. A radioatividade foi medida por espectrometria gama de alta resolução. A concentração média de selênio foi de (22,7 ± 7,4) µg g-1. (n = 30). A atividade média determinada para os radioisótopos foram: 15,77 Bq kg-1 para o 224Ra, 104,8 Bq kg-1 para 226Ra e 99,48 Bq kg-1 para 228Ra. Para 226Ra, os níveis não variaram significativamente com o tamanho das nozes, embora tais diferenças foram observadas para 224Ra e 228Ra. Não houve associação estatisticamente significativa entre o nível de selênio e a atividade de radionuclídeos, no entanto, houve correlação entre os radionuclídeos. Não foi encontrado aflatoxinas acima do limite de quantifcação.

A study was carried out to evaluate the association of levels of radioactivity, selenium and aflatoxin in shelled Brazil nuts, which were classified in different sizes, for export. The selenium determinations were performed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (LOQ = 3.0 µg g-1), and aflatoxins were detected by Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LOQ = 0.85 µg kg-1), recovery rates were between 92 and 100%. Radioactivity was measured by high-resolution gamma spectrometry. The selenium mean concentration was (22.7 ± 7.4) µg g-1. (n = 30). Mean activities determined for the following radium isotopes were: 15.77 Bq kg-1 for 224Ra, 104.8 Bq kg-1 for 226Ra and 99.48 Bq kg-1 for 228Ra. For 226Ra, the levels did not vary significantly with nut sizes, although such differences were observed for 224Ra and 228Ra. There was no statistically significant association between the level of selenium and the activity of radionuclides, however, there was correlation between the radionuclides. Aflatoxins above the quantification limit were not found.

Berílio-7 é um radionuclídeo cosmogênico, com meia-vida de 53 dias, produzido pelo processo de espalação de átomos de oxigênio e nitrogênio dentro da troposfera e estratosfera. Após sua produção, este é transportado até a superfície terrestre pela deposição úmida e seca. A precipitação seca contribui somente com 3-8% do inventário total. Medidas de berílio-7 no solo podem serem usadas para indicar movimento de solo da camada superficial e este estudo objetiva examinar o comportamento de berílio-7 no solo. Variabilidade natural do inventário de berílio-7 é em torno de 23% (desvio padrão relativo). A distribuição em profundidade de berílio-7 pode ser aproximada por uma função exponencial no solo nu, com uma profundidade média de distribuição no solo em torno de 1 cm. O berílio-7 não foi encontrado abaixo da profundidade de 2 cm para o tipo de solo estudado, o que confirma sua utilização para avaliar processo de erosão superficial como um traçador de solo superficial. A concentração máxima de berílio-7 no período analisado é em torno de 40 Bq.kg-1.

The aim of this study was to examine the beryllium-7 behavior in the soil. Natural variability of beryllium-7 concentration was calculated to be about 23% (relative standard deviation), and the depth distribution could be approximated by an exponential decay in bare soil, with an average penetration depth in the soil about 1 cm. The nuclide was not found below 2 cm depth, which confirmed its utilization to infer the erosion processes as a tracer of soil surface. The maximum beryllium-7 concentration in the analyzed period was about 40 Bq.kg-1.

O processo de erosão de solo em floresta nativa tem sido pouco investigado. Como a metodologia do césio-137 dá resultados tanto de taxas de erosão de solo como a bioturbação no perfil de solo, ele tem sido usado para avaliar o processo de erosão de solo nestes ecossistemas. O modelo de balanço de massa foi aplicado para avaliar as taxas de perdas de solo em três florestas nativas na região de Londrina, Paraná, Brasil. A distribuição em profundidade do césio-137 para as três florestas é do tipo exponencial. O inventário de césio-137 foi de 241 Bq m-2 para Mata 1, 338 Bq m-2 para Mata 2 e 325 Bq m-2 para Mata UEL.O valor de perda de solo calculado para Mata 1 foi 6,684 kg ha-1 yr-1, 1,788 kg ha-1 yr-1 para Mata 2 e 4,524 kg ha-1 yr-1 para Mata UEL.

The aim of this work was to assess the soil erosion process in native forest by the 137Cs methodology. The mass balance model was applied to assess the rates of soil loss in three native forests around of Londrina city, Paraná, Brazil. 137Cs distribution depth was of exponential type for the three forests and 137Cs inventory was 241 Bq m-2 for Mata 1, 338 Bq m-2 for Mata 2 and 325 Bq m-2 for Mata UEL. The soil loss value calculated for three native forests was: 6,684 kg ha-1 yr-1 for Mata 1, 1,788 kg ha-1 yr-1 for Mata 2 and 4,524 kg ha-1 yr-1 for Mata UEL.

O césio-137 introduzido no meio ambiente pelos testes nucleares de superfície é rápido e fortemente adsorvido às partículas finas do solo. Este pode ser usado como um marcador para determinação da redistribuição do solo. Esta metodologia tem sido muito usada nos países desenvolvidos, porém ainda muito pouco difundida no Brasil. O objetivo deste estudo foi a aplicação desta metodologia para determinação de perdas e ganhos de solo em uma bacia no município de Cambe, Paraná. Esta bacia está localizada ao redor das coordenadas 23º16' S e 51º17' O e o solo cultivado com diferentes culturas. Uma amostragem em transectos foi utilizada para avaliar a influência dos diferentes cultivos na erosão do solo. Um ponto em área de floresta foi amostrado e analisado para determinar o inventário de referência de césio-137 depositado pelo "fallout". O valor médio do inventário de referência foi de 292 Bq m-2. O inventário de césio-137 das amostras dos transectos variou de 80 Bq m-2 até 403 Bq m-2. Os pontos amostrados em pastagem e em cultura de soja apresentaram perdas de solo, e os pontos amostrados em plantação de café não apresentaram nem perda nem ganho de solo.

The objective of this work was study the soil losses or gains in a watershed in the municipal district of Cambé, Paraná using 137Cs as marker for the determination of soil redistributions. A transect sampling was used to evaluate the influence of different tillage on soil erosion. One point, located in a forest area was sampled and analyzed to determine the reference inventory of cesium-137 deposited by fallout. The average value of the reference inventory was 292 Bq m-2. The cesium-137 inventory of the transect samples varied from 80 Bq m-2 to 403 Bq m-2. The sampling points in pasture presented soil losses. The sampling points in coffee plantation did not present losses or gains. The sampling points in soybean cultivated areas presented soil losses.

A erosão superficial é um dos principais agentes de degradação dos solos e estimativas das taxas de erosão para diferentes condições edafoclimáticas pelos modelos tradicionais como USLE, RUSLE, são onerosos e demorados. Uma metodologia que tem sido muito estudada e sua aplicação no estudo da erosão vem crescendo em países como EUA, Reino Unido, Austrália, e outros, é a do uso do radionuclídeo antropogênico césio-137. Um resumo da história desta metodologia é apresentado, assim como a evolução das equações utilizadas para quantificar as taxas de erosão através da medida do césio-137. Duas bacias estudadas no Brasil mostraram que a metodologia do césio-137 é viável e coerente com as observações em campo para aplicação no estudo da erosão.

Superficial erosion is one of the main soil degradation agents and erosion rates estimations for different edaphicclimate conditions for the conventional models, as USLE and RUSLE, are expensive and time-consuming. The use of cesium-137 antrophogenic radionuclide is a new methodology that has been much studied and its application in the erosion soil evaluation has grown in countries as USA, UK, Australia and others. A brief narration of this methodology is being presented, as the development of the equations utilized for the erosion rates quantification through the cesium-137 measurements. Two watersheds studied in Brazil have shown that the cesium-137 methodology was practicable and coherent with the survey in field for applications in erosion studies.
