Abstract This research aimed to evaluate the economic viability of different scenarios for the first thinning in Khaya ivorensis monocultures and present an estimate of age and thinning intensity that provide a higher invested capital return. There were carried out 576 simulations considering different implementation and maintenance costs, ages for first thinning, thinning intensities, and recipes for standing wood sale. The Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) were calculated. The minimum price for standing wood, which all simulations were economically feasible, was 1 638 R$ m-3 for 10% thinning intensity, from 819 R$ m-3 to 20%, from 546 R$ m-3 for 30%, and 410 R$ m-3 for 40%. The simulations that maximized the NPV values were those with thinning prediction at five years of age. The percentage planning of thinned volume can be carried out by adopting economic criteria such as NPV and IRR. To obtain a return from the capital invested from the first thinning at five years of age, the percentage estimate from the thinned volume can be obtained according to the standing wood sale price for different minimum rates of attractiveness.

Resumo O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi avaliar a viabilidade econômica de diferentes cenários para a realização do primeiro desbaste em monocultivos de Khaya ivorensis e apresentar uma estimativa de idade e intensidade de desbaste que proporcionem maior retorno de capital investido. Foram realizadas 576 simulações considerando diferentes custos de implantação e manutenção, idades para primeiro desbaste, intensidades de desbaste e receitas para a venda de madeira em pé. Calcularam-se o Valor Presente Líquido (VPL) e Taxa Interna de Retorno (TIR). O preço mínimo da madeira em pé para o qual todas as simulações foram viáveis economicamente foi de 1 638 R$ m-3 para uma intensidade de desbaste de 10%, de 819 R$ m-3 para 20%, de 546 R$ m-3 para 30% e 410 R$ m-3 para 40%. As simulações que maximizaram os valores de VPL foram aquelas com previsão de desbaste aos 5 anos de idade. O planejamento do percentual de volume desbastado pode ser realizado adotando critérios econômicos como o VPL e a TIR. Para que haja retorno do capital investido logo no primeiro desbaste aos 5 anos idade, a estimativa percentual do volume desbastado pode ser obtida em função do preço de venda da madeira em pé para diferentes taxas mínimas de atratividade.

Resumo Esse trabalho tem como objetivo analisar como o campus da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF) se configura como um agente de estruturação na dinâmica da cidade a partir do estudo das transformações no uso do solo nos limites do campus e em seu entorno imediato. Para isso, foram elaboradas e analisadas 5 Cartas georreferenciadas, que apresentam as características físicas de uso do solo tanto no campus, quanto em seu entorno. O recorte temporal deste estudo destaca as transformações ocorridas a partir da instauração da universidade e da consolidação das ações do Programa do Federal de Apoio a Planos de Reestruturação e Expansão das Universidades Federais (REUNI) na UFJF. Resultados indicaram que nas duas áreas de análise houve um intenso processo de antropização e modificação no uso e ocupação do solo ao longo dos anos, com acréscimo considerável nas áreas construídas em detrimento da perda de cobertura vegetal, especialmente de áreas de vegetação rasteira; enquanto as áreas de solo exposto e de mata permaneceram relativamente estáveis. A implantação do REUNI, resultou em um impacto significativo no perfil da área construída do campus enquanto, no entorno, a urbanização foi mais constante desde a criação do campus nos anos 1960.

Abstract This study aims to analyse how the campus of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) is configured as a structuring agent in the dynamics of the city from the study of the transformations in land use in the limits of the campus and in its immediate surroundings. For this, 5 georeferenced maps were developed and analysed, presenting the physical characteristics of land use both on the campus and in its surroundings. The time frame of this study highlights the changes that occurred since the establishment of the university and the consolidation of the actions of the Federal Program to Support Plans for Restructuring and Expansion of Federal Universities (REUNI) at UFJF. Results indicated that in both areas of analysis there was an intense process of anthropization and modification in the use and occupation of the land over the years, with a considerable increase in the built area at the expense of the loss of vegetation coverage, especially in areas of undergrowth, while the exposed land and forest areas remained relatively stable. The implementation of REUNI, resulted in a significant impact on the profile of the built environment of the campus while, in the surroundings, urbanization was more constant since the creation of the campus in the 1960s.

RESUMO Este artigo trata das práticas curatoriais adotadas na seção de entomologia do Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo. Adicionalmente, apresenta uma breve introdução sobre sua origem, a formação dos museus de história natural, os paradigmas adotados pela curadoria desde a formação do acervo, bem como os desafios para manter e disponibilizar as coleções no cenário atual de carência de técnicos e pesquisadores, inadequação de infraestrutura, diminuição do investimento em ciência e tecnologia e crescente aporte de material biológico para instituições oficiais feito por fontes externas ao museu.

ABSTRACT This article discusses the curatorial practices adopted in the Entomology section of the Museum of Zoology of the University of Sao Paulo (MZ-USP). Moreover, it presents a brief introduction on the formation of Natural History Museums and the origins of the MZ-USP, exploring the paradigms adopted by the curatorship since the collection creation and the challenges in maintaining and making collections available in the current scenario of scarcity of technicians and researchers, inadequate infrastructure, decreased investment in Science and Technology, and increasing supply of biological samples from outside sources to official institutions.

Abstract This catalogue lists the type specimens of Crabronidae and Sphecidae (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) deposited in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil (MZUSP). The collection includes a total of 83 type specimens (17 holotypes, 66 paratypes), 82 of which belong to nine genera and 35 species of Crabronidae and only one of Sphecidae. All labels contents and additional information obtained from other available sources are presented. High resolution photographs of the primary types are also provided.

RESUMO A Amostragem Não Destrutiva (AND) permite uma caracterização eficiente, simples e segura das propriedades químicas do vegetal, como o Coeficiente de Utilização Biológico (CUB). A associação da AND com a técnica de Redes Neurais Artificiais (RNA) pode ser uma alternativa potencial em substituição às equações de regressão e aos métodos tradicionais de interpolação. Portanto, o presente trabalho objetivou avaliar a eficiência da RNA e da amostragem não destrutiva para estimar a eficiência de uso de nutrientes no tronco. O experimento foi instalado em blocos ao acaso, sendo estudado, em três blocos, o efeito de cinco espaçamentos de plantio: T1 - 3,0 m x 0,5 m; T2 - 3,0 m x 1,0 m; T3 - 3,0 m x 1,5 m; T4 - 3,0 m x 2,0 m e T5 - 3,0 m x 3,0 m. Uma árvore-amostra foi abatida para realizar a cubagem rigorosa e quantificar a matéria seca de casca e lenho por unidade experimental, totalizando-se 15 árvores. As árvores-amostras foram pesadas no campo e subamostras de casca e lenho foram coletadas ao longo do fuste para compor uma amostra composta por árvore. Também foi retirada uma amostra simples de cada componente obtidas com auxílio de um formão e martelo na região do DAP nas mesmas árvores-amostras. As amostras foram secas a 65ºC até peso constante. O material vegetal foi moído e submetido à análise química. Ajustaram-se modelos de regressão e aplicação de RNA para estimação do CUBTronco a partir do CUBDAP Casca e CUBDAP Lenho. As RNA apresentaram maior precisão e confiabilidade do que a regressão. A modelagem por redes neurais artificiais utilizando-se apenas uma amostra da casca na região do DAP demonstrou ser adequada para a estimativa do coeficiente de utilização biológico do tronco.

ABSTRACT The Non-Destructive Sampling (NDS) provides an efficient, simple and safe characterization of chemical properties of the plant, as the Coefficient of Biological Use (CBU). The association of NDS with the technique of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) can be a potential alternative to replace the regression equations and the traditional methods of interpolation. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate the efficiency of ANN and non-destructive sampling for the efficiency of nutrient use in the trunk. The research plot was installed in a randomized block being studied, in three blocks, the effect of five planting spacing: T1-3,0m x 0,5 m, T2 - 3,0 m x 1,0 m, T3 - 3,0 m x 1,5 m, T4 - 3,0 m x 2,0 m e T5 - 3,0 m x 3,0 m. A sample-tree was felled to make the cubage and quantify the dry bark and wood per experimental plot, totaling 15 trees. The sample-trees were weighed in the field and subsamples of bark and wood were collected along the stem to form a composite sample per tree. Also removed was a single sample of each component obtained with the aid of a chisel and hammer in DBH in the same sample-trees. The samples were dried at 65°C until constant weight. The material was ground and subjected chemical analysis. Adjusted regression models and application of ANN to estimation of CBUTrunk from the CBUDBH Bark and CBUDBH Wood. The ANN had a higher accuracy and reliability of the regression. Modeling by artificial neural networks using only sample in the DBH region proved to be adequate for estimating the coefficient of biological use of stem.

BACKGROUND Knowledge on synanthropic phlebotomines and their natural infection by Leishmania is necessary for the identification of potential areas for leishmaniasis occurrence. OBJECTIVE To analyse the occurrence of Phlebotominae in gallery forests and household units (HUs) in the city of Palmas and to determine the rate of natural infection by trypanosomatids. METHODS Gallery forests and adjacent household areas were sampled on July (dry season) and November (rainy season) in 2014. The total sampling effort was 960 HP light traps and eight Shannon traps. Trypanosomatids were detected in Phlebotominae females through the amplification of the SSU rDNA region, and the positive samples were used in ITS1-PCR. Trypanosomatid species were identified using sequencing. FINDINGS A total of 1,527 sand flies representing 30 species were captured in which 949 (28 spp.) and 578 (22 spp.) were registered in July and November, respectively. In July, more specimens were captured in the gallery forests than in the HUs, and Nyssomyia whitmani was particularly frequent. In November, most of the specimens were found in the HUs, and again, Ny. whitmani was the predominant species. Lutzomyia longipalpis was commonly found in domestic areas, while Bichromomyia flaviscutellata was most frequent in gallery forests. Molecular analysis of 154 pools of females (752 specimens) identified Leishmania amazonensis, L. infantum, and Crithidia fasciculata in Ny. whitmani, as well as L. amazonensis in Lu. longipalpis, Trypanosoma sp. and L. amazonensis in Pintomyia christenseni, and L. amazonensis in both Psathyromyia hermanlenti and Evandromyia walkeri. MAIN CONCLUSIONS These results show the importance of gallery forests in maintaining Phlebotominae populations in the dry month, as well as their frequent occurrence in household units in the rainy month. This is the first study to identify Leishmania, Trypanosoma, and Crithidia species in Phlebotominae collected in Palmas, Tocantins, Brazil.

Abstract: Introduction The biomechanical changes that arise after breast cancer increase the need for new rehabilitation programs. The aim of this study was to evaluate medium- and long-term effects of vibration therapy on pain intensity, range of motion, myoelectric activity, and muscle strength of post-surgical breast cancer women. Methods This controlled longitudinal clinical study was composed of 14 breast cancer women, who underwent vibration therapy treatment (VTG), and 14 healthy women, who constituted the control group (CG). The VTG performed ten 15-minutes sessions of vibration therapy on their affected upper limb. The volunteers were evaluated before and after treatment protocol, and three months later. Results We observed an attenuation of pain intensity after vibration therapy (p < 0.0001) and significant increase in range of motion during extension, abduction, and adduction movements of the horizontal shoulder. We noticed a trend in the reduction of compensatory movements, which activated the muscle contraction mechanism. The scapular dynamometer values for shoulder strength were significant. The VTG had less muscle strength than the CG in all situations: before treatment (p < 0.0001), after treatment (p = 0.0024), and 3 months later (p = 0.0008). The VTG increased muscle strength after treatment (p = 0.0005) and 3 months later (p = 0.0006). Conclusion Vibration therapy attenuated pain symptoms, improved shoulder movements, activated muscle contraction mechanism, and increased shoulder strength, which may be benefits of the conducted physical therapy.
