ABSTRACT Forage cactus species are cultivated in northeaster Brazil for feed, mainly during dry periods, as cacti are xerophytes well adapted to drought. Gas exchange studies have elucidated the physiological mechanisms underlying plant adaptation to ecosystems with low water availability. Here, we evaluated the variability between and within cactus forage genera Opuntia and Nopalea with respect to gas exchange behaviour. Twenty-one cultivars were used, 16 of which belonged to genus Opuntia, while six belonged to genus Nopalea, particularly, O. cochenillifera. Gas exchange was evaluated in the secondary cladode at 00:00 hours using a portable infrared gas analyser. Net CO2 assimilation rate, stomatal conductance, CO2 intercellular concentration, transpiration rate, and leaf temperature were evaluated. Additionally, instantaneous water use efficiency, intrinsic water use efficiency, and instantaneous carboxylation efficiency were calculated. Boxplots were used to assess value dispersion between the genera prior to submitting the data to multivariate analysis of principal components and cultivar-based grouping, and subsequently organizing the species studied in a dendrogram. Variability between the two genera and among cactus forage cultivars was detected for gas exchange. Cultivars were classified into three groups and two main components were identified. Cultivars 'Verdura' and 'Orelha de Elefante Mexicana’ showed higher photosynthetic performance.

ABSTRACT. The forage palm is widely cultivated in semiarid regions. It has a basic chromosome number of x = 11 and polyploids are the main variation. It is propagated via vegetative reproduction, and sexual propagation is rarely used. The objective was to associate the physiological quality of seeds of different cultivars of forage palm with the level of ploidy in the genera Opuntia and Nopalea. The cultivars used were: diploids (2n = 22) ‘F8’, ‘F21’, and ‘IPA Sertânia’; tetraploids (2n = 44) ‘Clone 6 African Elephant Ear’, ‘Mexican Elephant Ear’, and ‘V19’, and octaploids (2n = 88) ‘Round’, ‘Giant’, and ‘IPA Clone 20’. Thousand seed weight, length, diameter, number of seeds per fruit, first count and emergence percentage, shoot and root length, fresh and dry mass, electrical conductivity, and length, width, and fresh and dry weight of cladodes were measured. A nested scheme design was used, with three levels of ploidy and three cultivars within each level. The ploidy level positively influenced the number of seeds per fruit and the physiological quality of the seeds. Cultivars behave differently within the same ploidy level.

Resumo Regiões semiáridas são caracterizadas pela elevada evapotranspiração e baixa precipitação pluvial, favorecendo o acúmulo de sais quando irrigado com água salobra. Objetivouse avaliar o efeito do cultivo de milheto com níveis de água salobra e fertilização orgânica nas propriedades químicas e físicas do solo. Adotou-se o delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com arranjo fatorial, em parcelas subdivididas, com três repetições. As parcelas foram constituídas por quatro lâminas de irrigação (25, 50, 75 e 100% da evapotranspiração da cultura) e as subparcelas foram compostas por quatro níveis de fertilização orgânica (0; 15; 30 e 45 Mg ha-1). No final do ciclo de produção do milheto, o solo foi coletado nas camadas de 0-0.20 e 0.20-0.40 m, para aspectos físicos (densidade do solo, densidade de partículas e porosidade) e químicos (CE, pH, K, Na, Ca, Mg, H + Al, SB, CTC, V). Não houve interação entre a água salobra e a fertilização orgânica nas propriedades químicas do solo. A água salobra reduziu o potássio na camada de 0,20-0,.40 m. Observou-se efeito linear negativo para densidade na camada 0,20 - 0,40 m sob níveis de fertilização orgânica. Níveis de água salobra e fertilizante orgânico no cultivo do milheto não altera as propriedades químicas e físicas do solo na camada de 0-0,20 m. Porém, o uso de água salobra reduz a concentração de potássio no solo e a aplicação de fertilização orgânica reduz a densidade do solo na camada de 0.20-0,40 m.

Abstract Semi-arid regions are characterized by high evapotranspiration and low rainfall, favoring the accumulation of salts when irrigated with brackish water. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pearl millet cultivation with brackish water levels and fertilized with organic fertilizer on the chemical and physical properties of the soil. A split plot randomized block design was adopted, in a factorial arrangement, with three repetitions. Plots consisted of four irrigation levels (25, 50, 75 and 100% crop evapotranspiration) and subplots consisted of four levels of organic fertilizer (0; 15; 30 and 45 Mg ha-1). At the end of the pearl millet production cycle, soil was collected from layers 0-0.20 m and 0.20-0.40 m, for physical (soil bulk density, particle density and porosity) and chemical (EC, pH, K, Na, Ca, Mg, H + Al, SB, CEC, V) properties. There was no effect of interaction of brackish water levels and organic fertilizer levels on soil chemical properties. Brackish water reduced potassium on layer 0.20-0.40 m. A negative linear effect was found for density in the 0.20-0.40 m layer under different levels of organic fertilizer. Brackish water levels and organic fertilizer levels in the cultivation of pearl millet does not alter soil chemical and physical properties at the 0-0.20 m layer. However, the use of brackish water reduces the concentration of potassium in the soil and the application of organic fertilizer reduces soil density at the 0.20-0.40 m layer.

Resumo O banco de sementes no solo é uma das principais estratégias de sobrevivência em longo prazo das comunidades vegetais diante da sazonalidade e da irregularidade do regime pluviométrico em áreas áridas e semiáridas. Considerando a forte variação na riqueza e a densidade do banco de sementes nesses ambientes, este estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a variação espacial do banco de sementes em uma área de Caatinga, no Nordeste do Brasil, determinando a sua composição florística e densidade de germinação. A área selecionada foi uma lagoa temporária no Cariri paraibano, com vegetação altamente antropizada, devido a diversos usos ao longo do tempo. Em cada ponto cardeal, tomando como referência o centro da lagoa, foram retiradas amostras de solo para o banco de sementes. Todo o material coletado foi distribuído em bandejas plásticas e irrigado diariamente. A determinação da densidade de sementes no banco do solo foi realizada pelo método de emergência de plântulas e expressa em sementes.m-2. A flora do banco de sementes do solo da Caatinga foi representada neste estudo por 26 espécies e três morfoespécies, distribuídas em 11 famílias e 26 gêneros, dentre elas as famílias Poaceae e Asteraceae, com maior número de espécies. A principal forma de vida do banco de sementes foi herbácea e a densidade média da área de estudo foi de 2.942 sementes.m-2 (lagoa) e 3.826 sementes.m-2 (no entorno) e após o estresse hídrico foi de 732 sementes.m-2 e 1.208 sementes.m-2, nas áreas da lagoa e do seu entorno, respectivamente. A área do entorno da lagoa apresenta a maior densidade de plantas por m2 e maior diversidade de espécies. Além disso, o sentido Norte, em ambas as áreas, apresentou menor densidade de sementes.m-2.

Abstract The seed bank in soil is one of the main long-term survival strategies of plant communities in the view of seasonality and irregularity of rainfall in arid and semiarid areas. Considering strong variation in seed bank richness and density in these environments, this study aims to evaluate the spatial variation of seed bank in an area of Caatinga, in northeastern Brazil, determining its floristic composition and germination density. The selected area was a temporary lagoon in the Cariri region of Paraíba state, with highly anthropized vegetation, due to various uses over time. At each cardinal point, taking the center of the lagoon as a reference, soil samples were taken from the seed bank. All material collected was distributed in plastic trays and irrigated daily. The determination of seed density in the soil bank was performed by the seedling emergence method and expressed in seeds m-2. The flora of the Caatinga soil seed bank was represented in this study by 26 species and three morphospecies, distributed in 11 families and 26 genera, among them the Poaceae and Asteraceae families with the largest number of species. The main life form of the seed bank was herbaceous and the average density of the study area was 2,942 seeds.m-2 (lagoon) and 3,826 seeds.m-2 (in the surroundings) and after water stress was 732 seeds.m-2 and 1,208 seeds.m-2, in and around the lagoon areas, respectively. The area surrounding the lagoon has the highest plant density per m2 and the highest diversity of species. In addition, the northern direction in both areas presented lower seed density.

ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to perform a morphological and morphoagronomic analysis of wild Manihot species from a Brazilian semiarid region for inclusion in the collection at the Center for Agricultural Sciences, Federal University of Paraíba. To characterize the 55 accessions, 12 quantitative and 18 qualitative descriptors were used. A dissimilarity matrix was generated by Mahalanobis generalized distance (D²), and clusters were identified by the UPGMA method. It was possible to verify the formation of 8 dissimilar groups based on morphological characters and 5 groups based on morphometric characters, indicating the presence of genetic diversity among accessions. The evaluated morphometric variable with the greatest relative contribution was the length between the central lobe. Based on the dissimilarity matrix, the accessions 16 x 48 were the most genetically distant accessions, followed by 47 x 49. The accessions 4 Monteiro, 16 Soledad, 38 Boa Vista, 3 Pedra Lavrada, 7 Junco, 10 Barra de Santa Rosa, 21 Monteiro, and 39 Junco are the most promising and can be used as parents in breeding programs for this forage species.

Resumo Este estudo objetivou avaliar o comportamento ingestivo e a preferência alimentar de caprinos criados em Caatinga (Floresta Tropical Seca) degradada em três épocas do ano: transição (chuva-seca), seca e chuva. O experimento foi desenvolvido na Estação Experimental pertencente à UFPB em São João do Cariri-PB, Brasil. Foram utilizados seis caprinos machos mantidos em pastagem com área de 3,2 hectares. A avaliação dos animais foi feita por meio de observação visual e ininterrupta. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, com três tratamentos (época de chuva-seca, seco e chuvoso) e seis repetições (animais). As médias foram submetidas ao Teste de Tukey em nível de 5%. Na época de transição (chuva-seca), o tempo gasto pelos animais apresentou semelhanças para gramíneas, herbáceas/subarbustivas, serapilheira, arbustivos/arbóreos selecionados, com exceção das bromélias e cactáceas. Na estação chuvosa, os animais despenderam maior tempo de pastejo consumindo gramíneas. Nessa mesma época, o marmeleiro (Croton hemiargyreus Mill. Arg.) foi a espécie mais selecionada em relação à catingueira (Caesalpinia pyramidalis) e ao pereiro (Aspidosperma pyrifolium). O tempo despendido para atividade de pastejo na época de transição (chuva-seca) foi superior à época chuvosa e seca. Os caprinos, em criação extensiva na Caatinga, apresentam alta plasticidade no hábito alimentar podendo comportarse como animais pastejadores ou ramoneadores.

Abstract This study aimed to assess the ingestive behavior and feeding preference of goats reared in degraded Caatinga (dry tropical forest) during three seasons: transition (rainy-dry), dry, and rainy seasons. The experiment was carried out at the UFPB Experimental Station in São João do Cariri, PB, Brazil. Six male goats kept on pasture with an area of 3.2 hectares were used. The animals were assessed through continuous visual observation. The experimental design was completely randomized, with three treatments (rainy-dry, dry, and rainy seasons) and six replications (animals). Means were submitted to the Tukey test at a 5% level. The time www.revistas.ufq.br/vet spent by animals during the transition season (rainy-dry) had to cite in the article page. similarities for the selected grasses, herbaceous/sub-shrub plants, litter, and shrub/ tree plants, except for bromeliads and cacti. The animals spent longer grazing time consuming grasses at the rainy season. During this season, marmeleiro (Croton hemiargyreus Mill. Arg.) was the most selected species in relation to catingueira (Caesalpinia pyramidalis Tul.) and pereiro (Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart.). The time spent for grazing activity during the transition season (rainy-dry) was longer than the rainy and dry season. Goats reared extensively in the Caatinga have high plasticity in their eating habits and can behave as grazing or browsing animals.

RESUMO As concentrações de tanino condensado (TC) nas plantas são influenciadas por espécies, parte da planta, estação do ano, fase de crescimento, condições ambientais, doenças e desfolhação. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar o efeito dos fatores edafoclimáticos na concentração de TC armazenados em folhas e casca de Mimosa tenuiflora (Wild.) Poiret e Anadenanthera macrocarpa (Benth.) Brenan., coletados em três locais distintos no Nordeste do Brasil. Em cada local de estudo, a amostragem foi realizada selecionando-se aleatoriamente cinco árvores, cada árvore representou uma repetição e amostras de folhas e casca de cada espécie de planta foram coletadas. Amostras de solo foram coletadas próximo da base de cada planta para análises físicas, químicas e de umidade. Os dados meteorológicos de cada mês e local foram obtidos em estação automática do INMET. Realizou-se uma análise de componentes principais usando uma técnica multivariada para observar a influência do solo e do clima na concentração de tanino condensado. No geral, Anadenanthera macrocarpa apresentou a menor concentração total de TC em todas as frações e locais de coleta. Estes resultados sugerem que as características químicas do solo, a umidade do solo e as variáveis meteorológicas explicam 76.27% and 75.92% da variação do TC produzido por Mimosa tenuiflora e Anadenanthera macrocarpa, respectivamente. A concentração de tanino condensado nestas duas espécies está negativamente associada à umidade do solo e à precipitação, e positivamente associada à temperatura e aos elementos químicos do solo.

ABSTRACT Condensed tannin (CT) concentrations in plants are influenced by species, plant part, season, growth phase, environmental conditions, disease and defoliation. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of edaphoclimatic factors on the concentration of CT stored in leaves and bark from Mimosa tenuiflora (Wild.) Poiret and Anadenanthera macrocarpa (Benth.) Brenan., collected at three distinct locations in northeastern Brazil. At each study site, sampling was carried out by randomly selecting five trees, each tree represented one replication and samples of leaves and bark of each plant species was collected. Soil samples were collected near the base of each plant for moisture, physical and chemical analysis. Meteorological data from each month and site were obtained of the INMET automatic station. We conducted a principal components analysis using a multivariate technique to observe the influence of soil and weather on condensed tannin concentration. Overall, Anadenanthera macrocarpa has the least total CT concentration in both plant fraction and site. Our results suggest that soil chemical characteristics, soil moisture and weather explain 76.27% and 75.92% of the variation in CT produced by Mimosa tenuiflora and Anadenanthera macrocarpa, respectively. Condensed tannin concentration in these two species is negatively associated with soil moisture and rainfall, and positively associated with temperature and soil chemical elements.

RESUMO Os sistemas de criação dos pequenos ruminantes são extensivos na grande maioria, em que os animais são criados em áreas de pastagem nativa denominada Caatinga, sendo necessário o conhecimento da composição química e suas características de degradação alimentar para aumentar a eficiência do uso de nutrientes. Com isso, objetivou-se avaliar a composição química, os minerais, o fracionamento dos carboidratos e dos compostos nitrogenados, a degradabilidade, a digestibilidade in vitro da matéria seca e a produção de gás in vitro de espécies arbóreas, que são consumidas por caprinos e ovinos. As espécies avaliadas foram Cnidoscolus phyllacanthus (Muell. Arg.) Pax. e K. Hoffman, Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poiret, Myracrodruon urundeuva Fr. All., Poincianella bracteosa (Tul.) L.P. Queiroz, Spondias tuberosa Arr. Cam. e Ziziphus joazeiro Mart. Verificou-se que Mimosa tenuiflora possui uma maior quantidade de proteína bruta (174,9 g.kg-1 MS). Spondias tuberosa e Myracrodruon urundeuva apresentaram os maiores valores de carboidratos totais em comparação com as demais espécies analisadas. Quanto ao fracionamento de compostos nitrogenados, a maior proporção da fração A foi encontrada para Cnidoscolus phyllacanthus (375,5 g.kg-1 PB). Entre as espécies estudadas, Cnidoscolus phyllacanthus é destacado com maior degradação ruminal (61,63 %) e digestibilidade da matéria seca (627,1 g.kg-1 MS), refletindo uma maior produção de gás (206,02 mL.g-1 MS). Cnidoscolus phyllacanthus, Poincianella bracteosa e Myracrodruon urundeuva apresentaram maior disponibilidade de nutrientes no rúmen, o que é fundamental para o aumento potencial da quantidade de proteína microbiana ruminal que chega ao intestino delgado para ser utilizada pelo animal.

ABSTRACT The breeding systems of the small ruminants are extensive in the great majority, in which the animals are created in areas of native pasture named Caatinga, being necessary the knowledge on the chemical composition and its characteristics of feed degradation is crucial to increase nutrient use efficiency. Thereat, the objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition, the minerals, the carbohydrates and nitrogenous compounds fractionation, the degradability, in vitro dry matter digestibility and the in vitro gas production of arboreal species, those are consumed by goats and sheeps. The species evaluated were Cnidoscolus phyllacanthus (Muell. Arg.) Pax. et K. Hoffman, Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poiret, Myracrodruon urundeuva Fr. All., Poincianella bracteosa (Tul.) L. P. Queiroz, Spondias tuberosa Arr. Cam. and Ziziphus joazeiro Mart. It was found that Mimosa tenuiflora has a higher crude protein quantity (174.9 g.kg-1 DM). Spondias tuberosa and Myracrodruon urundeuva had the highest values for total carbohydrates compared to the other species analyzed. As for the fractionation of nitrogenous compounds, the highest proportion of fraction A was found for Cnidoscolus phyllacanthus (375.5 g.kg-1 CP). Among the species studied, Cnidoscolus phyllacanthus is highlighted with the highest ruminal degradation (61.63%) and dry matter digestibility (627.1 g.kg-1 DM), reflecting higher gas production (206.02 mL.g-1 DM). Cnidoscolus phyllacanthus, Poincianella bracteosa and Myracrodruon urundeuva showed a greater availability of nutrients in the rumen which is fundamental to increase the amount of ruminal microbial protein which reaches the small intestine for use by the animal.

ABSTRACT. Poincianella pyramidalis (catingueira) is a endemic plant of the Caatinga, selected by animals grazing on native pasture. With the aim of evaluating characteristics indicative of its nutritional quality, 10 plants were selected and identified, sampled at five different ages, were used to determine dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), mineral matter (MM), DM degradability (Deg DM), NDF degradability (Deg NDF) and in situ and in vitro leaf-tissue degradability. Phytochemical prospection was performed, and 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance applied to detect the presence of secondary compounds. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey’s test at 5%, and correlation analysis was carried out on the variables for leaf maturity in days. The levels of CP, NDF and Deg NDF showed a negative correlation with the increases in leaf age. Leaf-tissue degradation was restricted due to a physical barrier developed in the leaf fragments, which can be attributed to plant defence mechanisms. The in situ degradability of the cell wall components decreased with the increase in leaf age. The high levels of tannins and lignin, and the strong presence of flavonoids, should be considered for their anti-nutritional and pharmacological potential.

ABASTRACT. The objective of this study was to evaluate the plasma lipid profile and plasma fatty acids of dairy cows receiving diets supplemented with annatto. A total of 32 Holstein cows (550 kg), distributed in a completely randomized design, were allocated to individual stalls and submitted to following treatments: C0 = no annatto; C4 = inclusion of annatto at 4 g kg-1 dry matter (DM) of diet (0.07 g bixin kg-1 diet); C5 = inclusion of annatto at 5 g kg-1 DM of diet (0.09 g bixin kg-1 diet); and C7 = inclusion of annatto at 7 g kg-1 DM of diet (0.12 g bixin kg-1 diet). Blood samples were collected via epigastric vein puncture, centrifuged, and frozen for subsequent analysis. The results indicate that the inclusion (p > 0.05) of annatto does not decrease the total cholesterol or low and high density lipoproteins. However, it impacts the profile of fatty acids, evidenced by the reduction (p < 0.05) in levels of hypercholesterolemic fatty acids viz, myristic acid and palmitic acid. It also causes an increase in the levels of arachidonic acid, rumenic acid, linoleic acid, and total polyunsaturated fatty acids. Therefore, bixin included in the diets of dairy cows induces changes in the plasma fatty acid profile.

RESUMO Os rizóbios encontrados em fabáceas da Caatinga podem ser uma via para o cultivo de forragens no Semiárido, possibilitando, assim, aumentar a disponibilidade de alimento para a produção animal nesta região. Objetivou-se caracterizar morfofisiologicamente estirpes de rizóbios nativos das espécies forrageiras, Mimosa tenuiflora, (Jurema preta), Macroptilium atropurpureum (Siratro) e Desmanthus pernambucanus (Jureminha). O solo usado como substrato foi coletado em pontos específicos dos municípios de Sertânia, Arcoverde e São Bento do Una, estado de Pernambuco. A caracterização das colônias de rizóbios foi feita quanto ao tempo de crescimento, diâmetro, elevação, transparência, produção de exopolissacarídeos e coloração. Também foram feitos testes de tolerância dos rizóbios nativos em diferentes níveis de salinidade, temperatura e pH. Na avaliação cultural observou-se que os isolados formaram colônias com elevação plana, moderada produção de exopolissacarídeos, coloração variando de creme a branca e superfície lisa de acordo com cada isolado. Os testes fisiológicos de resistência a estresses abióticos mostraram que os isolados nativos de Mimosa tenuiflora foram mais resistentes quando cultivados nos solos provenientes do município de Sertânia, enquanto os isolados de M. atropurpureum e D. pernambucanus tiveram elevada resistência a altas temperaturas, independente do local de cultivo. Conclui-se que os rizóbios nativos da região Semiárida de Pernambuco apresentam resistência ao estresse causado por altas temperaturas, variação na salinidade e pH. Essas características são influenciadas pelo solo e espécie botânica em simbiose com os rizóbios.

ABSTRACT The rhizobia found in Fabaceae plants of the Caatinga may have potential as fodder in the semiarid region, thus increasing the availability of feed for animal production in this region. This study aimed to characterize the morphophysiology of rhizobia strains of the forage species Mimosa tenuiflora (Jurema preta), Macroptilium atropurpureum (Siratro), and Desmanthus pernambucanus (Jureminha). The soil used as the substrate was collected at specific locations in the municipalities of Sertânia, Arcoverde, and São Bento do Una, state of Pernambuco. The characterization of rhizobial colonies included growth period, diameter, elevation, transparency, exopolysaccharides production, and color. In addition, salinity, temperature, and pH tolerance tests of the native rhizobia were conducted. Evaluation of cultures showed that the isolates formed colonies with flat elevation, moderate production of exopolysaccharides, coloration varying from cream to white, and a smooth surface. Physiological tests of abiotic stress resistance showed that the native species isolated from M. tenuiflora were more resistant when grown in soils from the municipality of Sertânia and isolates from M. atropurpureum and D. pernambucanus had high resistance to high temperatures, regardless of place of farming. It can be concluded that native rhizobia from the Semiarid region of Pernambuco show resistance to stress caused by high temperatures, salinity variation, and pH. These characteristics are influenced by soil and the botanical species in symbiosis with the rhizobia.

ABSTRACT The litter in tropical ecosystems is one of the compartments responsible for the transference of nutrients to the soil, having great importance for the conservation and maintenance of biodiversity. Thus, this study aimed to quantify the contribution and stock of litter and the leaf decomposition rate of Gardneriana byrsonima A. Juss (murici) in two areas of Caatinga, semiarid region of Alagoas State. Litter production was measured monthly from March of 2012 to February of 2013. The litter decomposition rate and the remaining leaf mass of the murici were also calculated and analyzed for its material chemically. The leaf decomposition was measured in litter bags and the material was chemically analyzed. In the area of Olho D'Água Casado, the litter produced was over Delmiro Gouveia. The leaf fraction contributed to the higher percentage in the litter training in both areas. The leaf material showed slow decomposition to high levels of lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose, and high C:N ratio.

RESUMO A região Semiárida brasileira tem como característica marcante a alta irregularidade da distribuição da precipitação pluvial no espaço e no tempo, com duas estações marcantes, a estação chuvosa, correspondente a um período curto com precipitações pluviais, erráticas e de intensidade muito variável, e a estação seca, período crítico, em geral, de prolongada estiagem, quando as espécies da Caatinga expressam sua fisionomia mais marcante, a caducifolia. As espécies vegetais, nestas condições, apresentam dinâmica de crescimento e desenvolvimento em consonância com os eventos de chuvas. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar as fenofases de Poincianella pyramidalis e sua relação com a distribuição temporal da precipitação pluvial, que se dá em forma de pulsos. Para o acompanhamento fenológico, 32 indivíduos arbóreos foram selecionados, marcados e monitorados quinzenalmente, na Fazenda Açude, município de Soledade-PB. Para quantificar os eventos fenológicos, foram usados o percentual de intensidade de Fournier e o índice de atividade, registrando-se a presença e ausência das fenofases: brotamento, botão floral, floração (antese), frutificação e senescência, cujos dados foram relacionados com os pulsos e interpulsos de precipitação. Constata-se que as fenofases, brotamento, botões florais e floração em Poincianella pyramidalis se dão em sincronia com a distribuição temporal dos pulsos de precipitação pluvial na área de sua ocorrência. A intensidade e duração das fenofases do desenvolvimento em Poincianella pyramidalis dependem da amplitude e frequência dos pulsos de precipitação ao longo da estação chuvosa. A senescência total das folhas em Poincianella pyramidalis acontece quando os interpulsos de precipitação pluvial se intensificam à medida que avança a estação seca, caracterizando a caducifolia.

ABSTRACT A remarkable feature of the Brazilian semi-arid region is its highly irregular distribution of rainfall in space and time, with two marked periods: the rainy season, with erratic precipitation, of highly variable intensity; and the dry season, the critical period of prolonged drought, when the plant species of the Caatinga (desert vegetation found in northeastern Brazil) express their most remarkable trait, the deciduousness. In such conditions, plant species have their dynamics of growth and development in accordance with rainfall events. Thus, the objective of this study was to characterize the phenophases of Poincianella pyramidalis and their relationship with the temporal distribution of rainfall, which takes place in the form of water pulses. For the phenological study, 32 trees were selected, identified and monitored fortnightly on Açude Farm, located in the municipality of Soledade, PB state, Brazil. To quantify the phenological events, Fournier’s percent index and the activity index were adopted, recording the presence and absence of the following phenophases: sprouting, appearance of flower buds, flowering (anthesis), fruiting and senescence, whose data were related to the water pulses and inter-pulses. It was found that the sprouting, flower-bud and flowering phenophases in Poincianella pyramidalis happen synchronously with the temporal distribution of rain pulses in its habitat. The intensity and duration of phenophases in the development of Poincianella pyramidalis depend upon the extent and frequency of the water pulses throughout the rainy season. Total leaf senescence in Poincianella pyramidalis occurs when the inter-pulses of rainfall intensify as the dry season progresses, characterizing deciduousness.

RESUMO. Neste estudo objetivou-se analisar a qualidade fisiológica de diásporos de matrizes de Myracrodruon urundeuva, em três anos de coletas e diferentes áreas do Cariri paraibano, Brasil. Uma área no município de São João do Cariri, e duas em Boa Vista foram demarcadas, cujas matrizes foram avaliadas pela viabilidade e vigor de seus diásporos em três anos consecutivos. Diásporos das matrizes selecionadas foram submetidos à determinação do teor de água e as seguintes variáveis: germinação, emergência de plântulas, primeira contagem de germinação e de emergência de plântulas, índice de velocidade de germinação e de emergência de plântulas. A significância dos efeitos foi realizada através da estatística deviance. Para os fatores anos e áreas de coleta as médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade e para a variação entre as matrizes realizou-se análise de componentes principais e agrupamento. A variação da qualidade fisiológica de diásporos de M. urundeuva é dependente dos fatores ambientais. A qualidade fisiológica de diásporos de M. urundeuva varia em relação às matrizes, áreas e anos de coleta. As matrizes dos grupos 1 e 2 são as mais promissoras por conterem representantes das três áreas e produzirem diásporos com elevado potencial fisiológico.

ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of diaspores from Myracrodruon urundeuva mother trees developing in the Cariri region of the state of Paraíba, Brazil. The seeds were collected during three consecutive years and from different areas of the Cariri region. The seed collection areas comprised two sites in the municipality of Boa Vista and one in the municipality of São João do Cariri. The diaspores had their water content determined and were submitted to the following tests: germination, seedling emergence, first count of germination and seedling emergence (within 5 days), and speed of germination and seedling emergence. The treatment means were compared using the deviance statistic. The collection years and collection areas were compared by the Tukey test at a 5% probability level. The comparison between mother trees was made through principal component analysis and cluster analysis. The detected variation in the quality of M. urundeuva diaspores is dependent on environmental conditions. The physiological quality of M. urundeuva diaspores varies according to mother tree, collection area and year. Mother trees of groups 1 and 2 are the most promising since they included representatives of all three areas and produced diaspores of high physiological quality.

RESUMO. A Pornunça é uma espécie do gênero Manihot que está sendo cultivada como opção para alimentação animal no semiárido do Brasil. A área foliar (AF) é importante para determinar o crescimento de planta forrageira, e a avaliação tem que reunir as seguintes características: praticidade, precisão e baixo custo. O estudo objetivou estabelecer um modelo para determinar a área foliar da Pornunça (Manihot sp.) a partir de medidas morfométricas da folha. O delineamento experimental foi realizado em blocos ao acaso, com três tratamentos (métodos de determinação de área foliar) e três blocos, com o total de 144 repetições (folhas). Para determinação da AF, utilizou-se o método direto (AFReal), medidor de área foliar tipo esteira (Li-Cor 3100©) por meio das dimensões lineares. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de regressão. Houve uma relação entre a área foliar real (AFReal) para folhas pequenas, médias, grandes e total, e a área foliar determinada pelo medidor de área foliar tipo esteira (AFLi-Cor©) apresentou coeficiente de determinação elevado para o ajuste linear. A área foliar da Pornunça obtida pelo medidor Li-Cor3100© é de aproximadamente 10%, inferior, em comparação ao método AFReal. O modelo que melhor se ajustou para a estimativa da área foliar da Pornunça foi o potencial.

ABSTRACT. Pornunça is a species of the genus Manihot that has been cultivated as an option for animal feeding in the Brazilian semi-arid. Leaf area (LA) is important to determine forage plant growth, whose evaluation model has to meet the following characteristics: practicality, precision and low cost. The objective of this study was to set a model to determine the leaf area in Pornunça (Manihot sp.) from morphometric measurements of the leaf. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with three methods for determination of leaf area, and three blocks, with 144 replicates (leaves). For the determination of LA, the direct method (FAReal), treadmill leaf area meter (Li-Color 3100©) and linear dimensions were used. Data were subjected to regression analysis. There was a relationship between the actual leaf area (FAReal) for small, medium, large and total leaves, and the leaf area determined by the treadmill leaf area meter (FALi-Cor©) with a high coefficient of determination for linear fit. The Pornunça leaf area obtained by the Li-Cor3100© meter is approximately 10% lower compared to the FAReal method. The model that best fit the Ponunça leaf area estimation was the potential.
