RESUMO Este trabalho foi realizado para avaliar as características fermentativas e a estabilidade aeróbica das silagens de grãos úmidos de milho: convencional, doce e reidratado. Foi utilizado um delineamento em esquema fatorial 3x3 com três tipos de milho (Fortuna, doce e reidratado) e três tratamentos de inoculação (sem inoculação; com inoculação bacteriana; inoculação bacteriana mais enzimas). Foram avaliados a estabilidade aeróbica (diferença entre temperatura do bulbo seco e temperatura das silagens) e os valores de pH com: 0, 24, 48, 72, 96, 168, 192, 216, 240 e 296 horas de exposição aeróbica. Adicionalmente, foram testados diferentes modelos matemáticos para estimar os valores médios de pH pós abertura. Houve interação (P < 0,05) entre os tratamentos de inoculação e tipos de milho para a estabilidade aeróbica e para pH nas horas 72, 168 e 192 após a abertura dos silos. As silagens de milho doce inoculadas apresentaram melhor estabilidade aeróbica quando comparadas com as demais silagens. Para o pH às 48 horas a silagem de milho doce apresentou os menores valores de pH. O tratamento inoculação mais enzimas para a silagem de milho reidratado reduziu o pH 168. A equação de Richard (1959) foi a que melhor estimou os valores de pH para os tipos de inoculação e para o milho reidratado. Para as silagens de milho fortuna e doce o modelo proposto por Morgan et al. (1975) foi o que melhor ajustou os dados.

SUMMARY This work was carried out to evaluate the fermentation characteristics and aerobic stability, regarding the conventional high moisture corn grain silage (Fortuna variety), the high moisture sweet corn grain silage and the high moisture rehydrated corn silage. Data were statistically analyzed as a 3x3 factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design, and the factors were three types of corn (Fortuna, sweet and rehydrated) and three inoculation treatments (without inoculum, bacterial inoculum and bacterial inoculum plus enzymes). The aerobic stability values were assessed, collecting the temperatures from the room dry bulb and from the silage thermometers, and the pH values, at 0, 24, 48, 72, 96, 168, 192, 216, 240 and 296 hours after aerobic exposition. Additionally, different mathematical models to estimate the mean pH values after opening were tested. Interactions were observed (P<0.05) between types of corns and inoculants for aerobic stability and pH at 72, 168 and 192 hours after opening. Inoculated sweet corn silages presented better aerobic stability after aerobic exposition compared to the other silages. The sweet corn silage presented lowest pH values at 48 hours after opening. The pH values at 168 hours of rehydrated corn silage treated with bacterial inoculum plus enzymes was more acid. Richard’s Equation (1959) was the best tool for the pH estimation when either types of inoculants or rehydrated corn silage were considered. On the other hand, the model proposed by Morgan et al. (1975) was the best equation model to fit the data regarding either Fortuna or sweet corn silages.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar parâmetros genéticos para caracteres agronômicos e de resistência às cigarrinhas-das-pastagens em híbridos de Brachiaria decumbens e selecionar os de melhor desempenho. Trezentos e vinte e quatro híbridos foram avaliados em campo para caracteres agronômicos e em casa de vegetação para resistência às cigarrinhas-das-pastagens. Observou-se existência de variabilidade genética entre os híbridos para todos os caracteres analisados. As estimativas de herdabilidade entre médias de genótipos foram superiores a 0,52 para todos os caracteres agronômicos e de 0,98 para sobrevivência ninfal e 0,99 para duração do período ninfal. Híbridos com melhor desempenho em relação a cultivar Basilisk foram identificados para cada caráter individualmente e conjuntamente por meio de índices de seleção. A atribuição de pesos diferentes entre os caracteres nos índices de seleção não alterou significativamente o ranqueamento dos híbridos. Híbridos superiores foram selecionados para as próximas etapas do programa de melhoramento.

Abstract The objective of this work was to estimate genetic parameters for agronomic traits and resistance to spittlebugs in B. decumbens hybrids and to select the ones with best performance. For that, 324 hybrids were evaluated in field plots for agronomic traits and in the greenhouse for resistance to spittlebugs. Genetic variability amongst the hybrids was observed for all traits analyzed. The heritability estimates between genotypes means were higher than 0.52 for all agronomic traits and 0.98 and 0.99 for nymphal survival and nymphal period duration respectively. Hybrids with better performance than cultivar Basilisk for each individual trait were identified and also through a selection index combining all traits. Assigning weights to the different traits in the selection index did not significantly alter the rank for superior hybrids. Those were selected to continue on to the next phases of the breeding program.

Com o objetivo de determinar o valor nutritivo da silagem de milheto [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Brown], conduziu-se um experimento, nas dependências do Departamento de Zootecnia da UFLA, utilizando o milheto estabelecido em um Latossolo Vermelho Distroférrico típico textura muito argilosa. Os tratamentos constituíram-se de três cultivares (BRS 1501, BN 1 e Comum) e três idades de corte, 70, 90 e 110 dias, para silagem, semeados em novembro/2003. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, constituindo-se em fatorial com 3 x 3 (3 cultivares x 3 idades de corte), com 3 repetições. Foram avaliados os teores de MS, PB, pH, N-NH3 (% N total), FDN e FDA. Para as silagens, houve diferenças significativas entre as idades de corte para os teores de MS, PB, nitrogênio amoniacal e pH, variando de 21,34 a 36,83%, 7,13 a 9,50%, 1,21 a 1,38% e 3,48 a 3,77, respectivamente. Para a produção de silagem de milheto, o cultivar BN 1 semeado em novembro deve ser colhido aos 90 dias de idade, por ter superado os demais cultivares em composição bromatológica.

With the aim of evaluating the nutritive value of millet silage [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Brown], an experiment was carried out in the dependencies of the Animal Science Department of UFLA, using the millet established on a Typical Very Clay Texture Distroferric Red Latosol. The treatments consisted of three cultivars (BRS 1501, BN 1 and Comum) and three cutting ages, 70, 90 and 110 days for silage, sown in November/2003. The experimental outline used was the one of randomized blocks, constituting into a factorial with 3 x 3 (3 cultivars x 3cutting ages) with three replications. For the silages, there were significant differences among cutting ages for the contents of DM, CP, N-NH3 and pH, varying from 21.34 to 36.83%, 7.13 to 9.50%, 1.21 to 1.38% and 3.48 to 3.77, respectively. For the production of millet silage, the cultivar BN 1 planted in November can be harvested at 90 days of age, for overcoming the others in bromathological composition.

O experimento foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos da adição de níveis crescentes de forragem de leucena na composição bromatológica da silagem de sorgo. O delineamento experimental usado foi o inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos e três repetições. O material ensilado consistiu de sorgo puro e sorgo com 10, 20, 30 e 40% de forragem verde de leucena. O sorgo forrageiro AG 2002 foi colhido aos 110 dias após o plantio e a leucena foi cortada no mesmo dia, colhendo-se ramos com diâmetro de até 10 mm. O material permaneceu ensilado por 30 dias em minisilos experimentais de canos de PVC. Determinou-se os valores de pH e poder tampão (PT) e os teores de MS, PB, FDN, FDA e nitrogênio amoniacal (N-NH3). O aumento na proporção de leucena resultou em efeito linear positivo sobre os valores de PB, PT e N-NH3 e efeito linear negativo sobre os teores de MS, FDN e FDA. A adição de até 40% de forragem de leucena durante a ensilagem é uma alternativa viável para a melhoria da composição bromatológica da silagem de sorgo.

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of the addition of increasing levels of leucaena forage on the chemical composition of sorghum silage. A completely randomized experimental design was used with five treatments and three replicates. The ensiled material consisted of unmixed sorghum and sorghum with 10, 20, 30 and 40% of leucaena green forage. Forage sorghum AG 2002 was harvested at 110 days after planting. The leucaena was cut on the same day by harvesting branches with a diameter of up to 10 mm. The material remained ensiled for 30 days in laboratory minisilos of PVC tubes. The values for pH, buffering capacity (BC), DM, CP, NDF, ADF and ammonium nitrogen (N-NH3) were determined. The increase in the ratio of leucaena resulted in positive linear effect for CP, BC and N-NH3, and negative linear effect for DM, NDF and ADF contents. The addition of up to 40% of leucaena forage should be a viable alternative to the improvement of the chemical composition of sorghum silage.

Este ensaio foi realizado no Departamento de Zootecnia da Universidade Federal de Lavras-MG, com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos da adição de níveis crescentes de forragem de leucena (Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) DeWit) no valor nutritivo da silagem de milho (Zea mays L.). O delineamento experimental usado foi o inteiramente casualizado com cinco tratamentos e três repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de silagens de milho contendo 0, 10, 20, 30 e 40% de forragem de leucena com base na matéria verde. O material permaneceu ensilado por 30 dias em silos experimentais de canos de PVC. Determinaram-se os valores de pH e poder-tampão (PT) e os teores de MS, PB, FDN, FDA e nitrogênio amoniacal (N-NH3). O aumento na proporção de leucena não alterou o teor de matéria seca das silagens e resultou em efeito linear positivo sobre os valores de pH, PT , PB e N-NH3 e efeito linear negativo sobre os teores de FDN e FDA. A inclusão de forragem de leucena até o nível de 40% é uma alternativa viável para a melhoria do valor nutritivo da silagem de milho.

This assay was conducted at the Department of Animal Science of the University Federal of Lavras with the objective to evaluate the effects of the addition of growing levels of leucaena forage (Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) DeWit) in the nutritive value of the corn silage (Zea mays L.). The experimental design used was the completely randomized with five treatments and three replicates. The treatments consisted of corn silage with 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40% of leucaena forage. The material remained ensiled for 30 days in experimental silos of PVC tubes. The values of pH and buffering power (BP) and the contents of DM, CP, NDF, ADF and ammonium nitrogen (N-NH3) were determined. The dry matter contend of the silages was not affected by addition of leucaena. The increase in the ratio of leucaena resulted into a positive linear effect on the values of pH, BP, PB and N-NH3, and a negative effect on the contents of NDF and ADF. The addition of up to 40% of leucaena forage in the mixture of the silage is a viable alternative to the improvement of the nutritive value of corn silage.

Este experimento foi conduzido com o objetivo de avaliar algumas características da silagem de capim-marandu (Brachiaria brizantha Stapf cv. Marandu) submetida a diferentes tempos de emurchecimento. O delineamento experimental usado foi o inteiramente casualizado com quatro tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram tempos de emurchecimento de zero, duas, quatro e seis horas após o corte, em pleno sol. A gramínea foi colhida com aproximadamente 90 dias de rebrota e permaneceu ensilada por 40 dias em silos experimentais de canos de PVC. Determinaram-se os valores de pH, poder tampão (PT) e os teores de MS, PB, FDN, FDA e nitrogênio amoniacal (N-NH3). Pelas características analisadas, pôde-se concluir que o capim-marandu ensilado após emurchecimento de 1,32 a 3,02 horas pode ser satisfatoriamente armazenado na forma de silagem, conciliando vantagens operacionais e de qualidade da forragem.

The experiment was conducted with the objective to evaluate some characteristics of the silage of marandu grass (Brachiaria brizantha Stapf cv. Marandu) submitted to different wilting times. The completely randomized design with four treatments and four replicates was used. The treatments were wilting time of zero, two, four and six hours after the cut, in broad sunligth. The grass was harvested after 90 days of sprouting and stored for 40 days in experimental silos of PVC tube. pH values, buffer power (BC) and contents of DM, CP, NDF, ADF and ammonium nitrogen (N-NH3) were determined. The analyzed characteristics allowed to conclude that marandu grass stored after wilting of 1,32 at 3,02 hours, could be preserved satisfactorily in the form of silage, conciliating operationals advantages and forage quality.
