RESUMO O objetivo desta investigação foi comparar o nível de desempenho físico dos militares do 3º Batalhão de Polícia do Exército antes e durante a pandemia COVID-19. Os participantes foram 82 militares (76 homens) que foram submetidos ao Teste de Avaliação Física (TAF) em novembro de 2019 e setembro de 2020. Os testes de 12 minutos e VO2máx foram selecionados para avaliação cardiorrespiratória e flexão de braço e abdominais para avaliar a resistência muscular localizada. Os resultados mostraram uma diminuição no desempenho desses militares, tanto nas variáveis cardiorrespiratórias quanto na resistência muscular localizada (p ≤ 0,05). A pandemia pode ter influenciado negativamente o desempenho físico dos militares.

ABSTRACT This investigation aimed to compare the level of physical performance of the military of the 3rd Military Police Battalion before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants were 82 military personnel (76 men) who were submitted to the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) in November 2019 and repeated it in September 2020. The 12-minute and VO2max tests were selected for cardiorespiratory evaluation and push-ups and sit-up tests to assess localized muscle resistance. The results showed a decrease in the performance of these soldiers, both in cardiorespiratory variables and in localized muscular resistance (p ≤ 0.05). The pandemic may have negatively influenced the physical performance of the military.

RESUMEN El propósito de esta investigación fue comparar el nivel de desempeño físico de los soldados del 3er Batallón de Policía del Ejército antes y durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Los participantes fueron 82 militares (76 hombres) que se sometieron a la Prueba de Evaluación Física (PEF) en noviembre de 2019 y septiembre de 2020. Se seleccionaron las pruebas de 12 minutos y VO2max para evaluación cardiorrespiratoria y flexión de brazo y abdomen para evaluar la resistencia muscular localizada. Los resultados mostraron una disminución en el desempeño de estos soldados, tanto en las variables cardiorrespiratorias como en la resistencia muscular localizada (p ≤ 0.05). La pandemia puede haber influido negativamente en el desempeño físico de los militares.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Snakebites represent a serious global public health problem, especially in tropical countries. In Brazil, the incidence of snakebites ranges from 19 to 22 thousand cases per 100000 persons annually. The state of Rondônia, in particular, has had an increasing incidence of snakebites. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study on snakebites was conducted from January 2007 to December 2018. Brazil’s Information System for Notifiable Diseases was queried for all snakebites reported in Porto Velho, Ariquemes, Cacoal, and Vilhena. Data on land surface temperatures during the day and night, precipitation, and humidity were obtained using the Google Earth Engine. A Bayesian time series model was constructed to describe the pattern of snakebites and their relationship with climate data. RESULTS: In total, 6326 snakebites were reported in Rondônia. Accidents were commonly caused by Bothrops sp. (n=2171, 81.80%). Snakebites most frequently occurred in rural areas (n=2271, 85.5%). Men, with a median age of 34 years (n=2101, 79.1%), were the most frequent bitten. Moderate clinical manifestation was the most common outcome of an accident (n=1101, 41.50%). There were clear seasonal patterns with respect to rainfall, humidity, and temperature. Rainfall and land surface temperature during the day or night did not increase the risk of snakebites in any city; however, changes in humidity increased the risk of snakebites in all cities. CONCLUSION: This study identified the population exposed to snakes and the influence of anthropic and climatic factors on the incidence of snakebites. According to climate data, changes in humidity increased the risk of snakebites.

Abstract OBJECTIVE To describe the thermoregulation protocol implementation for newborns (NB). METHODS An experimental report, conducted at a neonatal unit in Salvador, Bahia, from January 2016 to January 2017. The Plan, Do, Check, Action cycle guided the construction, implementation and applicability of the protocol. RESULTS Implementation of the protocol that allowed the reduction of adverse events due to thermal instability during surgical procedures and introduction of new technologies. CONCLUSION The protocol could improve and strengthen the care practices related to safe surgery in newborns.

Resumen OBJETIVO Describir la implementación del protocolo de termorregulación para procedimientos quirúrgicos en recién nacido (RN). MÉTODOS Relato de experiencia, realizado en una unidad neonatal en Salvador-BA, en el período de enero de 2016 a enero de 2017. El ciclo Plan, Do, Check, Action orientó la construcción, la implementación y la aplicabilidad del protocolo. RESULTADOS Se pudo implementar el protocolo que permitió reducir eventos adversos por inestabilidad térmica durante procedimientos quirúrgicos y se introdujo nuevas tecnologías. CONCLUSIÓN El protocolo permitió una mejora y un fortalecimiento de las prácticas asistenciales, relacionadas con la cirugía segura en RN.

ABSTRACT Toxoplasma gondii can cross the placental barrier, causing fetal infection with potentially severe sequelae. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the serological screening for toxoplasmosis should be included in the basic neonatal heel prick test in order to establish criteria for the confirmation and/or exclusion of the diagnosis of congenital infection in newborns treated at three public health units in the metropolitan region of Goiania, Goias State, Brazil. Blood samples were collected on filter paper from newborns and later, peripheral blood samples from the mothers and their respective children were obtained to confirm or exclude the diagnosis of suspected congenital infection, by means of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (IgM and IgG) and a polymerase chain reaction assay. From a total of 1,159 blood samples collected on filter paper, 43.92% were reactive to IgG and 0.17% to anti-T. gondii IgM and IgG. One hundred and twenty-seven paired samples (mother and child) were collected following consensual protocols for peripheral blood collection. Results obtained from the filter paper and peripheral blood of the newborns were 90.55% concordant. A comparison of the mother and child blood test results showed agreement regarding the detection of IgG in 90.48% of the samples. The parasite DNA was detected in the peripheral blood of one child. In view of the results obtained in this study, the inclusion of the serological screening for toxoplasmosis in the newborn heel prick test proved to be effective for the early detection of congenital T. gondii infection.

Abstract The authors report the first case of fatal septic shock, a rare clinical presentation of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis S1. We also provide an immunological evaluation of the patient. Severe clinical signs such as organ dysfunction and digital gangrene occurred in this case. The patient presented a remarkable cell activation profile and diminished percentage of peripheral blood T regulatory cells. A decrease in anti-inflammatory IL-1RA plasma level showed the potential for endothelium damage, probably contributing to a vasculitis process. Together with P. lutzii, P. brasiliensis appears to be involved in severe cases of PCM.

ABSTRACT Toxoplasmosis is caused by Toxoplasma gondii and the probability of this infection occurring in the first months of life is usually low because its transmission is related to eating habits. A 6-month-old nursing infant was diagnosed with acute toxoplasmosis, which was identified through anti- T. gondii IgA, IgM and low-avidity IgG serologic assays, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and mouse bioassay test although its mother was seronegative. This serological divergence between mother and child led us to interview the mother regarding epidemiological factors. During this interview, she reported that she had given her 2-month-old baby a piece of undercooked beef to suck on. After some time, the baby presented fever and cervical lymphadenitis. This report emphasizes the importance of serological surveys of toxoplasmosis in nursing infants presenting with fever and lymphadenitis, in view of the possible acquisition of toxoplasmosis in the first months of life.

Objetivou-se verificar a divergência genética entre linhagens de codornas de corte e seus cruzamentos para as características de desempenho através da análise multivariada. Foram utilizadas quatro linhagens de codornas de corte em um sistema de cruzamentos dialélicos completos, proporcionando a formação de 16 grupos de progênies, sendo quatro parentais puros: L1, L2, L3 e L4; seis grupos genéticos mestiços F1: G12, G13, G14, G23, G24 e G34; e seis grupos genéticos mestiços F1 recíprocos. Foram avaliadas as seguintes variáveis: peso corporal médio ao nascimento, aos 28, aos 35 e aos 42 dias de idade; o consumo médio de dieta do nascimento aos 35 e aos 42 dias de idade; a conversão alimentar do nascimento aos 35 e aos 42 dias de idade; e o ganho em peso do nascimento aos 35 e aos 42 dias de idade. O desempenho dos grupos genéticos foi avaliado por meio da análise de variância multivariada e a primeira variável canônica, usando os testes do maior autovalor de Roy e da união-interseção de Roy para as comparações múltiplas. O estudo da divergência genética foi feito por meio da análise por variáveis canônicas e pelo método de otimização de Tocher. As três primeiras variáveis canônicas explicaram 88,82% da variação entre os grupos genéticos. A divergência genética entre os grupos genéticos avaliados permitiu a formação de quatro grupos: 1 - L1, G12, G23, G21 e G41; 2 - G13 e G31; 3 - L4 e G43; 4 - G32; 5 - G14 e G24; 6 - G42 e 7 - L2, L3 e G34, identificando a L4 como a linhagem que mais influiu na formação de novo grupos.

The objective was to evaluate the genetic divergence between lineages of quail and their crosses to the performance characteristics through multivariate analysis. Four lines of quails were used in a complete diallel system, provided training to 16 groups of progenies, four parental pure: L1, L2, L3 and L4; six genetic groups crossbred F1: G12, G13, G14, G23, G24 and G34; and six reciprocal F1 crossbred genetic groups. The variables were evaluated: mean body weight at birth, at 28, at 35 and 42 days of age; the average consumption of diet from birth to 35 and 42 days of age; feed conversion birth at 35 and 42 days of age; and the weight gain from birth to 35 and 42 days of age. The performance of genetic groups was assessed by multivariate analysis of variance and the first canonical variable, using the tests of the largest eigenvalue of Roy and Roy union-intersection for multiple comparisons. The study of genetic diversity was done by canonical variate analysis and by the optimization method of Tocher. The first three canonical variables explained 88.82% of the genetic variation between groups. The genetic divergence between the analyzed genetic groups allowed the formation of four groups: 1 - L1, G12, G23, G21 and G41; 2 - G13 and G31; 3 - L4 and G43; 4 - G32; 5 - G14 and G24; 6 - G42 and 7 - L2, L3, identifing L4 G34 as the lineage that most influenced the formation of new groups.
