Molecular biomarkers correspond to all endogenous or exogenous biomolecules, whose presence or alteration in metabolic pathways indicate the response of a biological system to a disturbance caused by internal or external factors. The search for biomarkers has allowed deepening the knowledge of complex pathophysiological mechanisms of diseases, interactions with potential drugs, and the improvement of diagnostic and therapeutic tests, establishing itself as a central point in personalized medicine. In addition, the development of the omics sciences has fostered an increasing exploration in this field of research. This review presents essential and relevant concepts in biomarker research, explores the various definitions and classifications of biomarkers according to their purpose, the critical aspects to be considered in experimental design, the primary employed study models (in vivo, in vitro, and in silico) and the factors that have hindered their ultimate implementation. Finally, important, and current clinical and pharmacological research areas in which biomarker research play a central role are presented.

Abstract Leishmaniasis is caused by protozoan parasites belonging to the genus Leishmania and includes cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral clinical forms. Drugs currently available for leishmaniasis treatment present high toxicity, and development of parasite resistance. Plants constitute an important source of compounds with leishmanicidal potential. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-Leishmania amazonensis activity of the terpenoid fraction of Eugenia pruniformis leaves (TF-EpL). TF-EpL was active against the promastigote and intracellular amastigote forms of L. amazonensis with IC50(24h) value of 43.60μg/mL and 44.77μg/mL, respectively. TF-EpL altered the cell cycle of the parasite, increasing 2.32-fold the cells in the Sub-G0/G1 phase. TF-EpL also changed the ΔΨm and increased ROS and the number of annexin-V-PI positive promastigotes, which suggests incidental death. β-sitosterol, ursolic acid, corosolic acid and asiatic acid were isolated from TF-EpL. The results showed the antileishmanial activity of E. pruniformis terpenoids and its potential for further studies as a source of new drugs for leishmaniasis.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The goal of this study was to evaluate and map the thermo-acoustic and the luminance variables inside of a commercial broiler chicken house equipped with conventional ventilation and misting system. Hybro breed broiler chickens were lodged in three regions (refuse, female and male), at a density of approximately 20 birds m-2. The productive environment was evaluated by the black-globe humidity index, relative humidity, air velocity, noise level and luminance. Spatial distribution maps of these variables were generated inside the broiler house using the kriging method. Based on the results, it was concluded that, in general, broiler chickens were subjected to inadequate environmental conditions during the hottest period of the day; however, the exploration potential for using evaporative cooling systems was verified. The spatial profile of the variables related to the productive environment provide for the attainment of more detailed information about the studied system.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the storage period postharvest and acceptability by consumer of hybrid melon 'F1 Jangada' (Cucumis melo L.), produced in hydroponic system, stored in atmosphere conditions (22 ± 2 ºC and 40 ± 5% relative humidity). The research was carried from June 21st to August 2nd, 2005. It was applied a 5 x 2 factorial scheme in a completely randomized design, with five storage periods (0; 7; 21; 28 and 42 days) and two substrata types (sand and coconut fiber) with three replications, where each repetition consisted of five melon fruits. The pH, titrable acidity, soluble solids, mass loss, sensorial analysis and purchase decision of the melons were analyzed. Effects of the substratum type and time of storage on the values of pH of the melons were verified. The titrable acidity of melon 'F1 Jangada' decreased significantly in the first seven days of storage in both substrata types. There were no effects of the substrata types and time of storage in the soluble solids of the melons during the storage. There was no difference of mass loss of the fruits produced in the two substrata, being of 7.1 ± 0.2%, during the 42 days of storage. The substratum type did not interfere in the general appearance, color, texture and flavor of the melons. On the 42nd day of storage the melons produced in the two substrata types, were acceptable by the consumer. However, the croped melons in the substratum with sand presented better acceptability and purchase decision along the storage.
