RESUMEN: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar los aspectos morfológicos craneofaciales de los pacientes con síndrome de Sheehan (SHS). Se realizó un estudio observacional con 19 mujeres diagnosticadas con SHS y 19 controles asociados por edad y sexo. Se obtuvieron radiografías cefalométricas laterales y se analizaron 30 medidas lineales y angulares mediante el software Radiocef Studio 2. La edad media de los pacientes fue de 65,47 ± 10,19 años. Los principales hallazgos fueron proposición maxilar (52,63 %) y mandíbula (52,63 %) con respecto a la base del cráneo, prognatismo mandibular en 73,68 %, patrón de crecimiento profundo en 42,1 %, aumento del plano mandibular en 36,84 % y reducción de la altura facial anterior. El grupo SHS mostró diferencias estadísticamente significativas en SNB (p=0,026), N-Me (p=0,006), longitud del paladar blando (p=0,011) y Ena-Me (p<0,001) en comparación con los controles. El análisis de la puntuación de la desviación estándar reveló valores alterados en relación con las longitudes maxilares y mandibulares totales. El SHS mostró una morfología craneofacial alterada, caracterizada por prognatismo maxilomandibular, tipo braquifacial, aumento del plano mandibular y reducción de la longitud del velo del paladar. Este estudio informa hallazgos novedosos en SHS.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to assess the craniofacial morphologic aspects of Sheehan’s syndrome (SHS) patients.An observational study was performed with 19 women diagnosed with SHS and 19 controls matched by age and sex. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained, and 30 linear and angular measurements were analyzed using the Radiocef Studio 2 software. The mean age of patients was 65.47 ± 10.19 years. The main findings were propositioned maxilla (52.63 %) and mandible (52.63 %) relative to the cranial base, mandibular prognathism in 73.68 %, deep growth pattern in 42.1 %, increased mandibular plane in 36.84 %, and reduction in anterior facial height. The SHS group showed statistically significant differences in SNB (p=0.026), N-Me (p=0.006), soft palate length (p=0.011), and Ena-Me (p<0.001) in comparison with controls. The standard deviation score analysis revealed altered values in relation to total maxillary and mandibular lengths. SHS showed altered craniofacial morphology, characterized by maxillo- mandibular prognathism, brachyfacial type, increased mandibular plane, and reduction in soft palate length. This study reports novel findings in SHS.

Abstract Dermoid cysts (DCs) and epidermoid cysts (ECs) are uncommon developmental cysts affecting the oral cavity. This study aims to evaluate patients with oral DCs and ECs and their demographic and clinicopathologic features. A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was performed. A total of 105,077 biopsy records of oral and maxillofacial lesions from seven Brazilian oral pathology centers were analyzed. All cases diagnosed as oral DCs and ECs were reviewed, and clinical, demographic, and histopathological data were collected. The series comprised 32 DCs (31.4%) and 70 ECs (68.6%). Most of the DCs occurred on the floor of the mouth (n = 14; 45.2%) of women (n = 17; 53.1%) with a mean age of 34.6 ± 21.6 years. All DCs were lined partially or entirely by stratified squamous epithelium (100%). Chronic inflammatory cells, melanin pigmentation, multinucleated giant cell reaction, and cholesterol clefts were observed in the fibrous capsule . Most of the ECs affected the labial mucosa (n = 20; 31.7%) of men (n = 39; 56.5%) with a mean age of 48.0±19.8 years. Microscopically, most ECs (n = 68; 97.1%) were lined entirely by stratified squamous epithelium. Two cysts (2.9%) showed areas of respiratory metaplasia. Chronic inflammatory cells, melanin pigmentation, multinucleated giant cell reaction, and cholesterol clefts were also observed in the fibrous capsule. Conservative surgical excision was the treatment of choice in all cases. Oral DCs and ECs are uncommon and often clinically misdiagnosed lesions. Clinicians should consider DCs and ECs in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue lesions in the oral cavity, mainly located on the floor of the mouth and labial mucosa.

Abstract Introduction and objectives: Although lidocaine is widely used to prevent cardiovascular changes resulting from laryngoscopy and orotracheal intubation, it is still unclear whether there are more efficacious drugs. This study aimed to compare the beta-blocker esmolol with lidocaine regarding the effects on hemodynamic response after orotracheal intubation. Methods: The study has a prospective, randomized, double-blind, superiority design, and assessed 69 participants between 18 and 70 years of age, ASA I-II, scheduled for elective or emergency surgery under general anesthesia with orotracheal intubation. Participants were randomly allocated to receive 1.5 mg.kg-1 esmolol bolus followed by 0.1 mg.kg-1.min-1 esmolol infusion (n = 34) or 1.5 mg.kg-1 lidocaine bolus followed by 1.5 mg.kg-1.h-1 lidocaine infusion (n = 35). We recorded changes in heart rate, arterial blood pressure and incidence of adverse events. Results: Post-intubation tachycardia episodes were significantly less frequent in the esmolol group (5.9% vs. 34.3%; Relative Risk (RR) 0.17; 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI) 0.04-0.71; Number Needed to Treat (NNT) 3.5; p = 0.015. After orotracheal intubation, mean heart rate was significantly lower in the esmolol group (74.5 vs. 84.5, p = 0.006). Similar results were observed in the subsequent 3 and 6 minutes (75.9 vs. 83.9, p = 0.023 and 74.6 vs. 83.0, p = 0.013, respectively). Conclusion: Esmolol was a safe and more effective intervention to reduce incidence of tachycardia and control heart rate immediately after tracheal intubation when compared to lidocaine.

RESUMO: Os efeitos da utilização de acetato como um agente alcalinizante em soluções eletrolíticas enterais de manutenção administradas por sonda nasogástrica em fluxo contínuo não foram descritos em potros desmamados. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos de soluções eletrolíticas enterais contendo diferentes concentrações de acetato sobre o equilíbrio ácido base, concentrações plasmáticas de glicose e lactato, e pH urinário de potros desmamados. Este trabalho foi um estudo controlado em um delineamento cross-over (6X2) utilizando seis potros com idade média de 7.3 ± 1.4 meses. Após 12h de restrição hídrica e alimentar, cada animal recebeu os dois tratamentos por via nasogástrica em fluxo contínuo de 15 ml/kg/h durante 12h: HighAcetate (52 mmol/l) e LowAcetate (22.6 mmol/l). O grupo HighAcetate foi eficaz em gerar um pequeno aumento no pH sanguíneo, concentração de bicarbonato sanguíneo, excesso de base e pH urinário.

ABSTRACT: The effects of acetate as an alkalinizing agent in maintenance enteral electrolyte solutions administered by nasogastric route in a continuous flow have not been previously described in weaned foals. This is the second part of a study that evaluated the effects of two electrolyte solutions of enteral therapy fluid in weaned foals. In this part, will be considered the effects of enteral electrolyte solutions containing different acetate concentrations on acid-base balance, blood glucose, lactate and urine pH of weaned foals. This was a controlled trial in a cross-over design performed in six foals with a mean age of 7.3 ± 1.4 months. After 12 h of water and food deprivation, each animal received the following two treatments by nasogastric route in a continuous flow of 15 ml/kg/h during 12 h: HighAcetate (acetate 52 mmol/l) and LowAcetate (acetate 22.6 mmol/l). The HighAcetate treatment was effective in generating a slight increase in blood pH, blood bicarbonate concentration, base excess and urinary pH.

RESUMO O feijão-caupi sofre perdas de produção significativas quando submetido ao estresse salino, porém esta ocorrência é variável entre os genótipos. Com isso, objetivou-se avaliar a fenologia e a produção de sementes crioulas de feijão-caupi irrigadas com água salina. A pesquisa foi conduzida em duas etapas, a primeira aconteceu em casa de vegetação para avaliar a fenologia e a produção dos genótipos de feijão-caupi. A segunda foi realizada em laboratório para avaliar a viabilidade e o vigor das sementes produzidas na primeira etapa. Os tratamentos constaram da combinação de dois níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação (0,5 e 4,5 dS m-1) e 14 variedades crioulas de feijão-caupi (Boquinha, Ceará, Costela-de-vaca, Lisão, Canário, Pingo-de-ouro, Roxão, Branco, Canapum-branco, Canapum-miúdo, Baêta, Coruja, Paulistinha e Sempre-verde) adquiridas junto aos agricultores tradicionais da região Oeste do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil. As variedades Canário, Baêta e Coruja resultaram com maior número de flores por planta e floração mais precoce. A salinidade diminuiu o número de flores por planta, aumentou o seu abortamento em todas as variedades crioulas e reduziu a produção para as precoces Branco, Canapum-miúdo, Baêta e Coruja. O cultivo irrigado com água salina não afetou a viabilidade das sementes da segunda geração do feijão-caupi, mas diminuiu o vigor das sementes das variedades Lisão, Pingo-de-ouro, Roxão, Branco, Canapum-branco, Canapum-miúdo, Baêta e Coruja. As variedades crioulas Boquinha, Ceará, Costela-de-vaca, Canário, Paulistinha e Sempre-verde foram indicadas para a produção de sementes de feijão-caupi irrigado com água salina.

ABSTRACT Cowpea suffers significant production losses when subjected to salt stress, but the response varies among genotypes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the phenology and production of traditional cowpea seeds under saline water irrigation. The experiment was conducted in two stages, the first one in a greenhouse to evaluate the phenology and production of cowpea genotypes and the second one in the laboratory to assess the viability and vigor of the seeds produced in the first stage. The treatments resulted from the combination of two salinity levels of the irrigation water (0.5 and 4.5 dS m-1) and 14 traditional cowpea varieties (Boquinha, Ceará, Costela-de-vaca, Lisão, Canário, Pingo-de-ouro, Roxão, Branco, Canapum-branco, Canapum-miúdo, Baêta, Coruja, Paulistinha, and Sempre-verde) acquired from traditional farmers in the western region of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Canário, Baêta, and Coruja varieties have a higher number of flowers per plant and earlier flowering. Salinity reduced the number of flowers per plant, increased abortion in all traditional varieties and reduced production in the early varieties Branco, Canapum-miúdo, Baêta, and Coruja. Cultivation under saline water irrigation did not affect the viability of the seeds from the second generation of cowpea, but reduced the vigor of the seeds of the varieties Lisão, Pingo-de-ouro, Roxão, Branco, Canapum-branco, Canapum-miúdo, Baêta and Coruja. The traditional varieties Boquinha, Ceará, Costela-de-vaca, Canário, Paulistinha and Sempre-verde are indicated for the production of cowpea seeds under irrigation with saline water.

RESUMEN Juntas, Conyza bonariensis, C. canadensis y C. sumatrensis presentan 105 casos reportados de biotipos resistentes a herbicidas tales como glifosato, paraquat y los inhibidores de la acetolactato sintasa (ALS). Se cree que la aplicación de herbicidas pre-emergentes en mezclas con desecantes es efectiva para controlar Conyza spp. en el manejo pre-siembra de la soya. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la eficacia de sulfentrazona/ diuron, imazetapir/flumioxazin y diclosulam, en mezcla con diquat, paraquat o glufosinato, en el control de Conyza spp. Se realizaron dos experimentos de campo en diseño de bloques al azar con cuatro repeticiones. Los tratamientos consistieron en la aplicación de herbicidas pre-emergentes en mezclas con desecantes, además del tratamiento control (sin aplicación), para un total de 10 tratamientos. El control de Conyza spp. se evaluó a los 7, 14, 21, 28 y 35 d después de la aplicación del herbicida, y se evaluaron los síntomas de daño en las plantas de soya a los 14, 21, 28 y 35 d después de la aplicación del herbicida. Los herbicidas sulfentrazona/diuron, imazetapir/flumioxazin y diclosulam en mezclas con diquat, paraquat o glufosinato, fueron efectivos para controlar Conyza spp. en la pre-siembra de la soya, destacando buenas opciones para la rotación de herbicidas antes y después de la emergencia. Las mezclas con diclosulam mostraron un mayor potencial de daño a las plantas de soya que sulfentrazona/diuron y imazetapir/flumioxazin.

ABSTRACT Together, Conyza bonariensis, C. canadensis and C. sumatrensis show 105 reported cases of biotypes resistant to herbicides like glyphosate, paraquat, and acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors . The application of pre-emergent herbicides combined with burndown herbicides is believed to be effective in controlling Conyza spp. during soybean pre-sowing management. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of sulfen-trazone/diuron, imazethapyr/flumioxazin, and diclosulam in mixtures with diquat, paraquat, or glufosinate on the control of Conyza spp. Two field experiments were conducted in a randomized block design with four replicates. Treatments consisted of the application of pre-emergent plus burndown herbicides, besides the weedy control treatment (without application), for a total of 10 treatments. The control of Conyza spp. was evaluated at 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 d after herbicide application, and symptoms of injury in soybean plants were evaluated at 14, 21, 28, and 35 d after herbicide application. The herbicides sulfentrazone/diuron, imazethapyr/flumioxazin, and diclosulam in combination with burndown herbicides diquat, paraquat, or glufosinate were effective in controlling Conyza spp. in the pre-sowing management of soybean, highlighting good options for pre- and post-emergent herbicide rotations. Mixtures with diclosulam showed a higher potential for injury to soybean plants than sulfentrazone/diuron and imazethapyr/flumioxazin.

Resumo Introdução A tuberculose, caracterizada pela Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) como emergência sanitária mundial, é uma doença de impacto global. Objetivo Realizar série histórica de casos de tuberculose em um período de 17 anos em Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, considerando a histórica relação da doença com a mineração. Método Dados foram obtidos em sistema próprio de registros do município, por busca ativa em prontuários médicos e comparados à quantidade de casos notificados no Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN). Para análises de tendência, foram utilizados modelos de regressão polinomial para séries históricas. Resultados Idade média dos casos foi 40,3 ± 16,4 anos. Homens apresentaram 2,23 vezes mais casos e chance 2,07 vezes maior para desfechos negativos. A forma mais observada foi pulmonar (84%), e sorologia para HIV foi realizada em apenas 16,3% dos registros. Principal desfecho observado foi cura (70%), e desfechos negativos totalizaram 20,2% dos registros. Taxa de incidência média foi 29,76 e 16,23 casos/100 mil habitantes na área municipal e distrital, respectivamente. Conclusão Apesar da relação histórica entre mineração e tuberculose no município, observa-se que este ainda apresenta preocupantes vulnerabilidades em relação à vigilância da doença. Análise de série temporal sugeriu declínio na proporção de casos curados entre 2009 e 2015.

Abstract Background Tuberculosis, characterized by the World Health Organization as a global health emergency, is a disease of global impact. Objective To investigate a series of tuberculosis cases during 17 years in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil, considering the historic relationship between mining and the disease. Method Data was obtained through the city's system of tuberculosis notifications, plus active search through medical records, and compared to the amount of notified cases present in the System of Information of Notifications Complications. For trend analysis, polynomial regression models were used for the historic series. Results The average age was 40.3 ± 16.4 years old. Men showed 2.23 times more cases and chances (odds ratio) of 2.07 times higher for negative outcomes. The most observed form was lung (85%) and HIV serology was performed in only 16.3% of the logs. The main observed outcome was a cure (70%) and negative outcomes accounted for 20.2% of the logs. The average incidence rate was 29.76 and 16.23 cases/100 thousand inhabitants in the city and district zones, respectively. Conclusion Despite the historical relationship between mining and tuberculosis in the municipality, it is observed that the same still presents worrying vulnerabilities about disease surveillance, temporal series analysis suggested a decline in the proportion of cases cured between 2009 and 2015.

ABSTRACT In recent years, the number of cases with severe Plasmodium vivax malaria has shown an increasing trend. It is, therefore, important to identify routine laboratory markers that best characterize the acute disease phase and can serve as a tool for clinical follow-up of patients. In a cohort study, we followed 87 patients with acute P. vivax monoinfection acquired in an endemic region of the Brazilian Amazon. Forty-two different biochemical and hematological parameters frequently tested in clinical routine were evaluated at the acute phase and the convalescent phase. A total of 42 laboratory tests were performed: biochemical parameters measured were serum lipids levels, aminotransferases, bilirubin, amylase, glucose, urea, creatinine, albumin, globulin, uric acid, C-reactive protein, and alpha-1-acid glycoprotein. Hematological parameters included total and differential white blood cell and platelet counts, hemoglobin concentration, mean platelet volume, platelet width distribution, and plateletcrit. Our results show that several biochemical and hematological parameters were associated with acute phase P. vivax malaria and these parameters reverted to normal values in the convalescent phase. The use of these parameters during diagnosis and follow-up of the infection is a useful clinical tool to evaluate the clinical course and therapeutic response of patients with uncomplicated vivax malaria.

ABSTRACT. In this work, lacunarity analysis is performed on soil pores segmented by the pure voxel extraction method from soil tomography images. The conversion of forest to sugarcane plantation was found to result in higher sugarcane soil pore lacunarity than that of native forest soil, while the porosity was found to be lower. More precisely, this study shows that native forest has more porous soil with a more uniform spatial distribution of pores, while sugarcane soil has lower porosity and a more heterogeneous pore distribution. Moreover, validation through multivariate statistics demonstrates that lacunarity can be considered a relevant index of clustering and can explain the variability among soils under different land use systems. While porosity by itself represents a fundamental concept for quantification of the impact of land use change, the current findings demonstrate that the spatial distribution of pores also plays an important role and that pore lacunarity can be adopted as a complementary tool in studies directed at quantifying the effect of human intervention on soils.

RESUMO: Seis vacas holandesas adultas foram utilizadas neste estudo de hidratação. Todos os animais foram submetidos previamente a 24 horas de jejum hídrico e alimentar e submetidos a ambos os tratamentos de hidratação por oito horas, em delineamento transversal 6x2. Foram realizados dois tratamentos com soluções hipotônicas balanceadas (190 mOsm/L) com diferentes concentrações de cloretos. Foram realizadas avaliações físicas, bioquímicas, hemogasometria e avaliação urinária em cinco diferentes tempos experimentais (T-24h, T0h, T4h, T8h e T24h). O período de hidratação causou expansão de volume plamático. Foi observado aumento da umidade das fezes e da excreção de Na+ e Cl- na urina, redução do volume globular, osmolaridade, pH sangüíneo e pH urinário. Ambas as soluções podem ser usadas para hidratação de bovinos adultos, sendo a solução que contém cloreto de cálcio (SECaCl) a mais indicada para o uso em animais com hipocloremia.

ABSTRACT: Six adult Holstein cows were used in this fluid therapy study. All animals were previously submitted to 24 hours of water and food abstaining period and submitted to both hydration treatments for eight hours in a crossover design 6x2. Two treatments with hypotonic solutions (190 mOsm/L) with low strong ion difference and different chloride concentrations solutions were executed. Physical, biochemical, blood gas analysis and urinary evaluation were executed in five different experimental times (T-24h, T0h, T4h, T8h e T24h). The hydration period caused plasmatic volume expansion. An increase in faeces humidity, excretion of Na+ and Cl- in urine, reduction of PCV, osmolarity, blood and urinary pH was observed. Both solutions can be used for fluid therapy for adult cattle and solution containing calcium chloride (SECaCl) was the most suitable for use in animals with hypochloraemia.

RESUMO: Mudanças adaptativas no metabolismo podem ocorrer em condições fisiológicas específicas, sendo necessário o conhecimento dos constituintes bioquímicos que possam sofrer variações durante os sessenta dias antes do parto, até os primeiros sessenta dias de lactação. O presente estudo teve como objetivo identificar e avaliar o perfil bioquímico de éguas Mangalarga Marchador no terço final da gestação, parto e lactação. Para isso, foram utilizadas 48 éguas, que formaram um grupo em manutenção (GM), composto por éguas não prenhes e um grupo experimental, chamado de grupo de transição (GT), formado por éguas gestantes. As coletas de sangue foram realizadas nos seguintes tempos: GM foi avaliada em um único tempo (início de todas as coletas); GT foi avaliado em sete tempos [T-60, T-30, T-15 (dias antes do parto), T0 (primeiras seis horas após o parto), T15, T30, T60 (dias após o parto)]. Todos animais foram submetidos as análises bioquímicas, em que foram mensuradas as concentrações de cálcio total, sódio, potássio, cloreto, fósforo, magnésio, ácido úrico, creatinina e ureia. Os dois grupos diferiram significativamente (P<0,05) nas concentrações de cálcio total, magnésio, sódio, potássio, creatinina, ácido úrico e ureia. Variações entre tempos também foram observadas nesses componentes. Entretanto, cloreto e fósforo não diferiram entre GM e GT. Conclui-se que o terço final da gestação, parto e lactação exerce forte influência sobre os constituintes bioquímicos do sangue por meio de ajustes para manter a homeostase nas éguas.

ABSTRACT: Adaptive changes in metabolism may occur under specific physiological conditions, being necessary the knowledge of the biochemical constituents that can undergo variations during the sixty days before foaling, until the first sixty days of lactation. The present study aimed to identify and evaluate the biochemical profile of Mangalarga Marchador mares during the last third of pregnancy, foaling and lactation. For this, 48 mares were used, which formed a maintenance group (MG), composed of non-pregnant mares and an experimental group, called the transition group (TG), formed by pregnant mares. Blood samples were collected at the following times: MG was evaluated in a single time (beginning of all collections); TG was evaluated in seven times [T-60, T-30, T-15 (days before foaling), T0 (first six hours after foaling), T15, T30, T60 (days after foaling)]. All animals were submitted to biochemical analysis, in which the concentrations of total calcium, chloride, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, uric acid, creatinine, and urea were measured. The two groups differed significantly (P<0.05) in calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, creatinine, uric acid and urea concentration. Variation between times was also observed for these compounds. However, chloride and phosphorus did not differ between MG and TG. It was concluded that the last third of pregnancy, foaling and lactation exerts major influence on the biochemical constituents of blood through adjustments to maintain homeostasis in mares.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do período de periparto sobre os parâmetros clínicos e hematológicos de cabras adultas. Utilizou-se animais da raça Saanen e Parda Alpina, sendo 24 nos tempos: T-15 (quinze dias antes do parto), T0 (imediatamente após o parto), T2 (dois dias após o parto), T5 (cinco dias após o parto), T10 (dez dias após o parto), T15 (quinze dias após o parto) e T30 (trinta dias após o parto) e 10 animais como grupo controle (Mesma raça, não gestantes e não lactantes). Como principais achados físicos, observou-se que a frequência cardíaca (FC) dos animais é normalmente mais elevada no pré-parto e parto, caindo ao longo do tempo de lactação. A frequência respiratória (FR) dos animais avaliados é mais elevada em relação aos animais controle, com o pico acontecendo no T-15. Na avaliação das principais observações no hemograma, observam-se valores mais baixos para hemoglobina no T-15 em relação ao grupo controle, e uma redução da toda série vermelha no T15. Houve uma elevação do número de leucócitos por neutrofilia com linfopenia em T0 e a leucocitose com neutrofilia se manteve ao longo da fase observacional. Valores de proteínas mais baixos foram observados em T-15 e T0, aumentando posteriormente. A variável fibrinogênio apresentou o maior valor em T0. Conclui-se que os parâmetros físicos e hematimétricos são úteis para detecção das variações que ocorrem no periparto. Tais achados, associados ao leucograma de estresse e aumento da taxa metabólica basal, encontrado nesta mesma fase, corroboram com o momento de fragilidade fisiológica na qual a cabra se encontra. Assim, cuidados no manejo relacionados ao conforto térmico e atendimento às exigências nutricionais são fundamentais a fim de se evitar mais desequilíbrios orgânicos decorrentes de fatores externos que podem vir a comprometer a saúde do caprino e posterior desempenho produtivo.

Abstract The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of the peripartum period in the clinical and hematological parameters of adult goats. The research used animals of Saanen and Alpine Brown breed at the following times: T-15 (fifteen days before partum), T0 (immediately after partum), T2 (two days after partum), T5 (five days after partum), T10 (ten days after partum), T15 (fifteen days after partum) and T30 (thirty days after partum). A group of 10 adult goats, of the same breed, non-pregnant and non-lactating comprised the control group. The main physical find was higher heart rate (HR) at pre-parturition and at delivery time, with a decrease of the values through the time. The respiratory (RR) rate of the evaluated group was higher than that of the control group, with the pic at T-15. The main alteration revealed in the complete blood count was lower values of hemoglobin at T-15, when compared to the control group. It was observed a leukocytosis by neutrophil increasing with lymphopenia at T0 and leukocytosis with neutrophil increasing in the early lactation period. The protein values were lower at T-15 and T0, but they were increased by the lactation time. The fibrinogen presented higher values in T0. As conclusion of this assay, the physical and hematological parameters were useful to detect the variation that occurs in the periparturition period of dairy goats. Those findings, associated to the stress leucogram and the increase in the metabolic basal rate in this period, confirm the physiological susceptibility of the goats in early lactation. Management of temperature and of nutritional needs is imperative to keep these animals without organic unbalance, and to avoid health problems and productive failures.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos de três soluções eletrolíticas enterais de manutenção com diferentes fontes de energia administradas em bovinos adultos por via nasorruminal em fluxo contínuo sobre parâmetros fisiológicos e hematológicos. Foram utilizadas seis novilhas holandesas em um delineamento crossover. Os animais foram submetidos a três tratamentos: Solução contendo Propionato de cálcio - 4g de NaCl, 0,5g de KCl, 0,3g de MgCl2 e 10g de propionato de cálcio para cada 1000mL (Osmolaridade mensurada: 299mOsm/L); Solução contendo Glicerol - 4g de NaCl, 0,5g de KCl, 0,3g de MgCl2, 1g de acetato de cálcio e 10mL de glicerol para cada 1000mL (Osmolaridade mensurada: 287mOsm/L); Solução contendo Propilenoglicol - 4g de NaCl, 0,5g de KCl, 0,3g de MgCl2, 1g de acetato de cálcio e 15mL de propilenoglicol para cada 1.000mL (Osmolaridade mensurada: 378mOsm/L). Foi realizado exame físico e colheita de sangue para os hemogramas imediatamente antes do início da hidratação e a cada três horas durante 12h de tratamento e mais uma colheita 12h após o final do período experimental, perfazendo seis colheitas ao total. Todas soluções promoveram ao longo das 12 horas de tratamento hemodiluição com redução nos valores de hemácias, concentração de hemoglobina e volume globular, sem, contudo, alterar o leucograma. A hidratação enteral em fluxo contínuo via nasorruminal, mostrou-se uma técnica bem tolerada pelos animais, como mínimos efeitos sobre o bem-estar, mesmo quando administrada por 12 horas, sendo, portanto, uma técnica indicada como uma opção à hidratação parenteral na terapia de manutenção de fluidos. As três soluções eletrolíticas aqui propostas são capazes de expandir significativamente a volemia.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of three enteral electrolyte solutions, each with different energy sources, administrated as continuous flow on the physiological parameters and blood count of healthy Holstein heifers. Six Holstein heifers were used in a crossover design. All animals received all three treatments: solution with calcium propionate, 4g of NaCl, 0.5g of KCl, 0.3g of MgCl2, and 10g of calcium propionate diluted in 1000mL of water (measured osmolarity: 299mOsm/L); solution with glycerol, 4g of NaCl, 0.5g of KCl, 0.3g of MgCl2, 1g of calcium acetate, and 10mL of glycerol in 1000mL of water (measured osmolarity: 287mOsm/L); solution with propylene glycol, 4g of NaCl, 0.5g of KCl, 0.3g of MgCl2, 1g of calcium acetate, and 15mL of propylene glycol in 1000mL of water (measured osmolarity: 378mOsm/L). Physical evaluations and blood samples were collected immediately before the initiation of fluid therapy, at 3-hour intervals over the 12-hour period of fluid therapy, and 12 hours after the end of fluid therapy. Animals presented no signs of stress or discomfort. All solutions resulted in a significant decrease in erythrocyte concentration, hemoglobin concentration, and hematocrit, without affecting the leukogram. Enteral fluid therapy administered as continuous flow via the naso-ruminal route was well-tolerated by animals with minimal effects on animal welfare, even when administered for 12 hours. This technique is indicated as an alternative route for parenteral maintenance fluid therapy. Electrolyte solutions proposed here were able to significantly expand blood volume.
