Abstract In Brazil, there has been an uncontrolled increase in incarceration of women, and this situation is not interrupted during periods of pregnancy or lactation. A scoping review was carried out to systematically map and synthesize evidence published since 2000 on the practice of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) among imprisoned people in Brazil. Intersectionality and penal abolitionism were the theoretical-methodological approaches used to analyze the studies. A total of 25 studies were selected, 90% of which were published from 2010 to 2020. In the context of maternal and child health, they mainly exposed the difficulties of maintaining EBF in prison, including the lack of definition of a minimum period of stay for the baby, the lack of professional guidance for the practice of EBF, and the inadequate structure of prison units. In the area of law, the studies reported tensions between the disciplinary order and children’s irreducible human right to food. The studies focused the investigation on the mothers’ experiences, but did not question the practical and historical forms of imprisonment, especially regarding Black, female, and poor bodies. Critical and propositional approaches are necessary to produce evidence toward the guarantee of rights to health and food.

Resumo No Brasil, houve crescimento descontrolado do encarceramento feminino, sendo que não se interrompe essa situação em períodos de gravidez ou lactação. Foi realizada uma revisão de escopo com objetivo de mapear e sintetizar sistematicamente evidências, publicadas a partir do ano 2000, sobre a prática de aleitamento materno exclusivo (AME) entre pessoas em situação de cárcere no Brasil. A interseccionalidade e o abolicionismo penal foram as abordagens teórico-metodológicas utilizadas para análise dos artigos. Ao todo, 25 estudos foram selecionados, sendo 90% publicados entre 2010 e 2020. No âmbito de saúde materno-infantil, eles expuseram principalmente as dificuldades de manter o AME no cárcere, incluindo a indefinição de um período mínimo de estadia do bebê, a falta de orientação profissional à prática de AME e a estrutura inadequada das unidades prisionais. Na área do direito, os estudos relataram tensões entre a ordem disciplinar e o irredutível direito humano das crianças à alimentação. Os estudos focalizaram a investigação na vivência das mães, porém não questionaram as formas práticas e históricas do aprisionamento, em especial sobre corpos negros, femininos e pobres. Abordagens críticas e propositivas são necessárias à produção de evidências para a garantia de direitos à saúde e à alimentação.

Abstract This study evaluated the construct validity of the instrument Oral Health Literacy among diabetics. A probabilistic random sample of 239 diabetics from an infinite population answered the 10 items of the questionnaire. The structural validity was assessed by confirmatory factor analysis and goodness of fit, chi-square per degrees of freedom ratio (X2/df), comparative fit index (CFI), goodness-of-fit index (GFI), and root-mean-square error of approximation (RMSEA). Internal consistency was estimated by the average variance extracted (AVE) and composite reliability (CR). The scores were dichotomized with the upper limit of the 95% confidence interval as the cutoff point. The three-dimensional model presented good quality parameters (X2 /df = 2.459; CFI = 0.988; TLI = 0.981) and poor RMSEA (0.078). Internal consistency was adequate; AVE for the Access, Understand/appraise, and Apply subscales were 0.831, 0.981, and 0.954 and the CR for these subscales were 0.893, 0.962, and 0.822, respectively. Inadequate literacy ranged from 41.8 to 48.1%. The three-dimensional model identified (access, understand/appraise, and apply) showed structural validity, good internal consistency, and understandability.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), previously known as Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is one of the most common hepatic diseases in individuals with overweight or obesity. In this context, a panel of experts from three medical societies was organized to develop an evidence-based guideline on the screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of MASLD. Material and methods: A MEDLINE search was performed to identify randomized clinical trials, meta-analyses, cohort studies, observational studies, and other relevant studies on NAFLD. In the absence of studies on a certain topic or when the quality of the study was not adequate, the opinion of experts was adopted. Classes of Recommendation and Levels of Evidence were determined using prespecified criteria. Results: Based on the literature review, 48 specific recommendations were elaborated, including 11 on screening and diagnosis, 9 on follow-up, 14 on nonpharmacologic treatment, and 14 on pharmacologic and surgical treatment. Conclusions: A literature search allowed the development of evidence-based guidelines on the screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of MASLD in individuals with overweight or obesity.

Abstract Many studies about fasciolosis control have been carried out, whether acting on the adult parasite or in Pseudosuccinea columella, compromising the development of the larval stages. The present study aimed to evaluate, under laboratory conditions, the susceptibility of P. columella to Heterorhabditis bacteriophora HP88, during for 24 and 48 hours of exposure. The snails were evaluated for 21 days for accumulated mortality; number of eggs laid; hatchability rate; biochemical changes; and histopathological analysis. We found that exposure induced a reduction in glucose and glycogen levels, characterizing a negative energy balance, due to the depletion of energy reserves as a result of the direct competition established by the nematode/endosymbiont bacteria complex in such substrates. A mortality rate of 48.25% and 65.52% was observed in the group exposed for 24 h and 48 h, respectively, along with significant impairment of reproductive biology in both exposed groups in relation to the respective controls. The results presented here show that P. columella is susceptible to the nematode H. bacteriophora, with the potential to be used as an alternative bioagent in the control of this mollusk, especially in areas considered endemic for fascioliasis, in line with the position expressed by the World Health Organization Health.

Resumo Muitos estudos têm sido realizados sobre o controle da fasciolose, seja atuando no parasito adulto, seja em Pseudosuccinea columella, comprometendo o desenvolvimento das fases larvais. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar, em condições laboratoriais, a suscetibilidade de P. columela à Heterorhabditis bacteriophora HP88, durante 24 e 48 horas de exposição. Os moluscos foram avaliados por 21 dias para mortalidade acumulada; número de ovos postos; taxa de eclodibilidade; alterações bioquímicas; e análise histopatológica. Constatou-se que a exposição induziu a redução nos níveis de glicose e glicogênio, caracterizando um balanço energético negativo, devido ao esgotamento das reservas energéticas, decorrentes da competição direta estabelecida pelo complexo nematoide/bactéria endossimbionte nesses substratos. Foi observada uma taxa de mortalidade de 48,25% e65,52% no grupo exposto por 24 h 48 h, respectivamente, juntamente com comprometimento significativo da biologia reprodutiva em ambos os grupos expostos em relação aos respectivos controles. Os resultados aqui apresentados, mostram que P. columela é suscetível ao nematódeo H. bacteriophora, com potencial para ser utilizada como um bioagente alternativo no controle dess molusco, especialmente em áreas consideradas endêmicas para fasciolose, em linha com a posição expressa pela Organização Mundial da Saúde.

For Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), evaluation processes are transformative, as they present arguments to trigger this movement. Since self-evaluation is the starting point for the evaluation process in the context of higher education, this work aims to propose a prototype of a meta-evaluation instrument for use in evaluating the process and results of institutional self-evaluation in Brazilian HEIs. To achieve this objective, three stages of the research were carried out, which, together, sought to identify attributes, criteria and indicators to compose the aforementioned instrument. The steps were: bibliographic research, document analysis of institutional self-evaluation reports and survey applied with members of the Own Assessment Commissions of the HEIs of the State of Santa Catarina, through a questionnaire. From the analysis of the collected data, it was possible to define the most relevant elements for the development of the prototype of a meta-evaluation instrument applicable to institutional self-evaluation presented as a result of this study, in order to continually seek to qualify this process aimed at improving quality of Brazilian higher education. As this is a prototype, it is recommended to continue the research with the application of the meta-assessment instrument by the CPAs of Brazilian HEIs, as a way of testing and opening for new future discussions on the subject.

Para as Instituições de Ensino Superior (IES), os processos avaliativos são transformadores, na medida que apresentam argumentos para desencadear esse movimento. Sendo a autoavaliação o ponto de partida para o processo avaliativo no âmbito da educação superior, este trabalho tem como objetivo propor um protótipo de instrumento de meta-avaliação para utilização na avaliação do processo e dos resultados da autoavaliação institucional de IES brasileiras. Para atender a este objetivo foram realizadas três etapas da pesquisa as quais, em conjunto, buscaram identificar atributos, critérios e indicadores para compor o referido instrumento. As etapas foram: pesquisa bibliográfica, análise documental dos relatórios de autoavaliação institucional e levantamento (Survey) aplicado com os membros das Comissões Próprias de Avaliação (CPA) das IES do Estado de Santa Catarina, por meio de questionário. A partir da análise dos dados coletados, foi possível definir os elementos mais relevantes para a elaboração do protótipo de instrumento de meta-avaliação aplicável à autoavaliação institucional apresentado como resultado deste estudo, a fim de buscar qualificar continuamente este processo que visa a melhoria da educação superior brasileira. Por tratar-se de um protótipo, recomenda-se a continuidade da pesquisa com a aplicação do instrumento de meta-avaliação pelas CPAs das IES brasileiras, como forma de testagem e abertura para novas discussões sobre o assunto.

Resumo Introdução Crianças submetidas a amigdalectomias apresentam dor intensa no pós-operatório. Uma das opções farmacológicas de analgesia são os opioides, como a morfina. No entanto, os riscos de efeitos adversos, como aumento do tempo de recuperação da anestesia e depressão respiratória, podem limitar o seu uso. Objetivos Avaliar o uso de morfina endovenosa intraoperatória na redução da dor pós-operatória imediata de crianças submetidas a amigdalectomia. Método Neste estudo cego randomizado, crianças de 3 a 10 anos foram submetidas a amigdalectomia, com ou sem adenoidectomia, e divididas em dois grupos. As crianças do grupo M receberam 0,1 mg.kg-1 de morfina endovenosa na indução anestésica, enquanto as do grupo controle receberam anestesia convencional sem morfina. As percepções de dor no pós-operatório foram avaliadas aos 30, 60, 120, 180 e 240 min após a recuperação da anestesia, pelas próprias crianças e também pelos seus pais ou responsáveis, com uma escala de dor pela face. Resultados Foram incluídas 57 crianças, 30 no grupo com morfina e 27 no grupo sem morfina. De acordo com as próprias crianças, a dor pós-operatória foi menor durante as avaliações feitas aos 30 minutos após o despertar da anestesia (p = 0,023), enquanto segundo seus pais/responsáveis a dor foi menos intensa nas avaliações feitas aos 30 (p = 0,002), 60 (p = 0,006) e 180 minutos (p = 0,007) após o despertar. Além disto, analgésicos no pós-operatório foram menos solicitados pelas crianças do grupo da morfina. Não foram observados efeitos colaterais associados ao uso da morfina. Conclusão Uma dose única de morfina endovenosa durante a indução anestésica reduziu a intensidade da dor pós-operatória imediata de crianças submetidas a amigdalectomia, sem aumento do tempo de despertar da anestesia e com menor consumo de analgésicos de resgate.

Abstract Introduction Children undergoing tonsillectomy have severe pain in the postoperative period. One of the pharmacological options for analgesia is opioids, such as morphine. However, the risks of adverse effects, such as increased recovery time from anesthesia and respiratory depression, can limit its use. Objectives To evaluate the use of intraoperative intravenous morphine to reduce immediate postoperative pain in children undergoing tonsillectomy. Methods In this double-blind randomized study, children aged 3-10 years were submitted to tonsillectomy, with or without adenoidectomy, and divided into two groups. Children in group M received 0.1 mg/kg of intravenous morphine during anesthetic induction, while those in the control group received conventional anesthesia without morphine. Postoperative pain perceptions were assessed at 30, 60, 120, 180 and 240 min after recovery from anesthesia, by the children themselves and also by their parents or guardians, using a facial pain scale. Results A total of 57 children were included, 30 in the group with morphine and 27 in the group without morphine. According to the children themselves, the postoperative pain was less at the evaluations performed at 30 min after awakening from anesthesia (p= 0.023), while according to their parents/guardians, the pain was less intense in the evaluations performed at 30 (p= 0.002), 60 (p= 0.006) and 180 min (p= 0.007) after awakening. Moreover, postoperative analgesics were less requested by children in the morphine group. No observed side effects were associated with the use of morphine. Conclusion A single dose of intravenous morphine during anesthetic induction reduced the intensity of immediate postoperative pain in children undergoing tonsillectomy, without increasing the time of awakening from anesthesia and with lower consumption of rescue analgesics.

RESUMO Objetivo: analisar a contribuição do cuidado de enfermagem, com ênfase na comunicação, para o paciente sob cuidados paliativos na fase terminal e seus familiares. Método: estudo qualitativo, realizado em um Hospital Filantrópico da cidade de João Pessoa-PB, Brasil, em 2019, desenvolvido com 15 familiares de pacientes em cuidados paliativos, por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de conteúdo, proposta por Bardin, à luz da Teoria do Final de Vida Pacífico. Resultados: emergiram duas categorias: ‘A comunicação dos profissionais de enfermagem como estratégia para promover conforto, paz, dignidade e respeito para pacientes e familiares em cuidados paliativos’; ‘A presença e o diálogo de pessoas importantes para o paciente sob cuidados paliativos são fundamentais para um final de vida pacífico.’ Conclusão: espera-se que, através desse estudo, seja possível aprimorar a assistência à família acerca da comunicação nos cuidados paliativos.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the contribution of nursing care, with emphasis on communication, for the patient under palliative care in the terminal phase and their families. Method: qualitative study, conducted in a Philanthropic Hospital in the city of João Pessoa-PB, Brazil, in 2019, developed with 15 family members of patients in palliative care, through semi-structured interviews. The data were submitted to content analysis, proposed by Bardin, in the light of the Pacific End of Life Theory. Results: two categories emerged: ‘Communication by nursing professionals as a strategy to promote comfort, peace, dignity and respect for patients and families in palliative care’; ‘The presence and dialogue of people important to the patient under palliative care are fundamental for a peaceful end of life.’ Conclusion: it is hoped that, through this study, it will be possible to improve assistance to the family about communication in palliative care.

RESUMEN Objetivo: analizar la contribución de los cuidados de enfermería, con énfasis en la comunicación, para el paciente en cuidados paliativos en fase terminal y sus familias. Método: estudio cualitativo, realizado en un Hospital Filantrópico de la ciudad de João Pessoa-PB, Brasil, en 2019, desarrollado con 15 familiares de pacientes en cuidados paliativos, a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas. Los datos fueron sometidos a un análisis de contenido, propuesto por Bardin, a la luz de la Teoría del Final Tranquilo de la Vida. Resultados: surgieron dos categorías: “La comunicación de los profesionales de enfermería como estrategia para promover el confort, la paz, la dignidad y el respeto a los pacientes y familiares en los cuidados paliativos”; “La presencia y el diálogo de las personas importantes para el paciente en los cuidados paliativos son fundamentales para un final de vida tranquilo”. Conclusión: se espera que, a través de este estudio, sea posible mejorar la asistencia a la familia sobre la comunicación en los cuidados paliativos.

Resumo Objetivo: Investigar a correlação entre a extensão do envolvimento ósseo, o volume esplênico e a qualidade de vida em pacientes com doença de Gaucher. Materiais e Métodos: Estudo descritivo, prospectivo e transversal de 18 pacientes com doença de Gaucher submetidos a ressonância magnética de 3-T de ambos os fêmures e da coluna lombar. Análise semiquantitativa foi feita utilizando o escore bone marrow burden (BMB). Correlação linear foi estudada para as variáveis volume esplênico, qualidade de vida e escore BMB. Resultados: Uma correlação linear entre os escores BMB e volume esplênico foi demonstrada. Em relação ao índice de qualidade de vida, não foi observada correlação estatisticamente significante nem com o volume esplênico e nem com o escore BMB. Conclusão: Nosso estudo demonstrou uma correlação linear entre o escore BMB e o volume esplênico, correspondendo a maior extensão de doença óssea em indivíduos com maior esplenomegalia. Nenhuma correlação foi encontrada entre o escore BMB e a qualidade de vida, indicando a natureza insidiosa e a progressão silenciosa da doença de Gaucher.

Abstract Objective: To investigate the correlations among the extent of bone involvement, splenic volume, and quality of life in patients with Gaucher disease. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive, prospective cross-sectional study of 18 patients with Gaucher disease who underwent 3-T magnetic resonance imaging of both femurs and the lumbar spine. Semiquantitative analyses were performed on the basis of the bone marrow burden (BMB) score. We looked for linear relationships among the variables splenic volume, quality of life score, and BMB score. Results: We identified a linear relationship between the BMB scores and splenic volume. The quality of life score showed no statistically significant relationship with splenic volume or the BMB score. Conclusion: The linear relationship between the BMB score and the splenic volume indicates that the extent of bone disease is greater in individuals with splenomegaly. No correlation was found between the BMB and quality of life scores, illustrating the insidious and silent progression of Gaucher disease.

Abstract Introduction Adenotonsillectomy is the first-line treatment for obstructive sleep apnea secondary to adenotonsillar hypertrophy in children. The physical benefits of this surgery are well known as well as its impact on the quality of life (QoL), mainly according to short-term evaluations. However, the long-term effects of this surgery are still unclear. Objective To evaluate the long-term impact of adenotonsillectomy on the QoL of children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). Method This was a prospective non-controlled study. Children between 3 and 13 years of age with symptoms of SDB for whom adenotonsillectomy had been indicated were included. Children with comorbities were excluded. Quality of life was evaluated using the obstructive sleep apnea questionnaire (OSA-18), which was completed prior to, 10 days, 6 months, 12 months and, at least, 18 months after the procedure. For statistical analysis, p-values lower than 0.05 were defined as statistically significant. Results A total of 31 patients were enrolled in the study. The average age was 5.2 years, and 16 patients were male. The OSA-18 scores improved after the procedure in all domains, and this result was maintained until the last evaluation, done 22 ± 3 months after the procedure. Improvement in each domain was not superior to achieved in other domains. No correlation was found between tonsil or adenoid size and OSA-18 scores. Conclusion This is the largest prospective study that evaluated the long-term effects of the surgery on the QoL of children with SDB using the OSA-18. Our results show adenotonsillectomy has a positive impact in children's QoL.

Resumo Stomoxys calcitrans é um díptero hematófago. Vários agentes são usados no controle biológico, incluindo nematoides entomopatogênicos (NEPs). O bioensaio I objetivou avaliar o efeito de Heterorhabditis bacteriophora HP88 e Heterorhabditis baujardi LPP7 sobre larvas de S. calcitrans em diferentes períodos de exposição. Grupos de 10 larvas foram colocados em placas de Petri, adicionou-se 200 NEPs/larva, e foram divididos de acordo com tempos de exposição de 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 e 48 horas. O objetivo do Bioensaio II foi avaliar a eficácia dos NEPs na infecção de larvas de S. calcitrans, quando esses foram isolados de larvas da mosca oriundos do Bioensaio I. Os grupos de 10 larvas foram colocados em placas de Petri e 200 NEPs/larva foram adicionados. No bioensaio I, H. bacteriophora causou taxas de mortalidade de 51,7%, 83,3% e 91,7% em 12, 24 e 48 horas, respectivamente, enquanto H. baujardi causou taxas de mortalidade de 9,3% (12h), 35% (24h) e 35% (48h). No Bioensaio II, H. bacteriophora e H. baujardi resultaram em taxas de mortalidade de 35% e 25%, respectivamente. Concluiu-se que os maiores tempos de exposição apresentaram as maiores mortalidades larvais e que NEPs isolados de S. calcitrans não são eficientes no controle das larvas mosca.

Abstract Stomoxys calcitrans is a hematophagous dipteran. Several agents are used in biological control, including entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs). Bioassay I involved an evaluation of the effect of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora HP88 and Heterorhabditis baujardi LPP7 on S. calcitrans larvae in different periods of exposure. Groups of 10 larvae were placed in Petri dishes and 200 EPNs/larva were added, which were divided into groups according to the exposure times of 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours. The purpose of Bioassay II was to evaluate the efficacy of the EPNs in infecting S. calcitrans larvae when they were isolated from stable fly larvae in Bioassay I. Groups of 10 larvae were placed in Petri dishes and 200 EPNs/larva were added. In bioassay I, H. bacteriophora caused mortality rates of 51.7, 83.3 and 91.7% in 12, 24 and 48 hours, respectively, while H. baujardi caused mortality rates of 9.3 (12h), 35 (24h) and 35% (48h). In Bioassay II, H. bacteriophora and H. baujardi resulted in mortality rates of 35% and 25%, respectively. It was concluded that the longest exposure times presented the highest larval mortality and that EPNs isolated from S. calcitrans are not efficient in controlling the larvae fly.

RESUMO: As características climáticas dos locais de produção de suínos influenciam na produtividade do sistema, sendo as fêmeas em reprodução uma categoria extremamente sensível a elevadas temperaturas, principalmente, quando é atingida sua temperatura critica superior. Por meio desta revisão, avaliou-se os efeitos do sistema de resfriamento evaporativo sobre parâmetros ambientais, fisiológicos e de desempenho em fêmeas suínas em reprodução. Uma pesquisa bibliográfica foi realizada utilizando as palavras-chave: sow; swine; gilt e pig combinadas individualmente com a expressão ‘evaporative cooling’. Um total de 11 artigos atendeu aos pré-requisitos determinados para compor a revisão sistemática, sendo que os estudos envolveram fêmeas gestantes e lactantes mantidas em ambientes que apresentaram temperaturas entre 21,5 e 34,8 °C, e umidade relativa entre 32,2 e 84,2%. O sistema de resfriamento evaporativo foi usado de forma a resfriar o macro ou micro ambiente. Pode-se concluir que o uso do sistema de resfriamento evaporativo promove aumento do consumo de ração para porcas em lactação, diminuição da perda de peso na lactação, aumento do peso dos leitões ao desmame, redução da temperatura dos galpões e diminuição da frequência respiratória das porcas. Para porcas gestantes, não foram encontradas alterações no desempenho reprodutivo.

ABSTRACT: Climatic characteristics of the production sites of pigs influence the yield of the system, with breeding sows being a category extremely sensitive to high temperatures, especially when their upper critical temperature is reached. This review evaluated the effects of the evaporative cooling system on environmental, physiological and performance parameters in breeding sows. By means of this review, a bibliographic search was performed using the following keywords: sow; swine; gilt and pig combined individually with the expression ‘evaporative cooling’. A total of 11 papers met the prerequisites determined to compose the systematic review and the studies involved gestating and lactating sows maintained in environments that presented ambient temperatures between 21.5 and 34.8 °C and relative humidity between 32.2 and 84.2%. The evaporative cooling system was used in order to cool the macro or micro environment. It can be concluded that the use of evaporative cooling system promotes increase in feed intake per lactating sow, decrease in weight loss in lactation, increase of weight of piglets at weaning, temperature reduction of the barns and decrease of the respiratory rate of the sows. For gestating sows, no changes in reproductive performance were reported.

Abstract Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx is the sixth most common type of cancer in the world. During tumorigenesis, gene promoter hypermethylation is considered an important mechanism of transcription silencing of tumor suppressor genes, such as DAPK, MGMT and RUNX3. These genes participate in signaling pathways related to apoptosis, DNA repair and proliferation whose loss of expression is possibly associated with cancer development and progression. In order to investigate associations between hypermethylation and clinicopathological and prognostic parameters, promoter methylation was evaluated in 72 HPV negative oral and oropharyngeal tumors using methylation-specific PCR. Hypermethylation frequencies found for DAPK, MGMT and RUNX3 were 38.88%, 19.44% and 1.38% respectively. Patients with MGMT hypermethylation had a better 2-year overall survival compared to patients without methylation. Being MGMT a repair gene for alkylating agents, it could be a biomarker of treatment response for patients who are candidates for cisplatin chemotherapy, predicting drug resistance. In view of the considerable levels of hypermethylation in cancer cells and, for MGMT, its prognostic relevance, DAPK and MGMT show potential as epigenetic markers, in a way that additional studies may test its viability and efficacy in clinical management.

Abstract: Introduction: The Covid-19 pandemic has had a direct impact on medical student training, through the sudden change from face-to-face to remote learning and the stress and anxiety caused. Students need coping strategies for the sake of their mental health and to deal with situations of extreme anxiety. Experience Report: during the pandemic the ELAM (Study of Literature and Art in Medicine) group has sought to help students in lockdown deal with their mental struggles by promoting discussions on literature through texts it has produced, debates on social media and, primarily, through art activities such as watercolor painting and visual arts. Twenty-four watercolor paintings, videos, collages, chronicles and poems were produced. The main themes addressed were: love (N=2), ageing (N=2), sin and religion (N=4), life cycle (N=6), cancer, chaos, wisdom, mortality (N=3), time, looking and seeing (N=2) and regionalism (N=2). Discussion: Essential measures to tackle Covid-19 include social isolation, physical distancing and restrictions on people’s movements to prevent the rapid spread of the virus. When youngsters lack the mechanisms to cope with the resulting stressful situation, a series of mental disorders can be triggered, such as depression, anxiety and mood swings. Reflecting a broader trend in medical training, medical schools are increasingly investing in curricular content involving arts, and at this particular moment in time this represents an important coping strategy for students trying to deal with the pandemic. Conclusion: Getting through this difficult period of the Covid-19 pandemic has demanded a coping strategy to help students experience and vent their fears, where art has been the best form of expression, and the ELAM group has achieved such a strategy.

Resumo: Introdução: O momento da pandemia por Covid-19 tem um impacto direto na formação dos estudantes de Medicina, tanto pela modificação repentina na metodologia presencial para remota quanto pelo estresse e pela ansiedade gerados. A saúde mental dos estudantes necessita de estratégias de coping para que eles possam lidar com situações de extrema ansiedade. Relato de experiência: O grupo Estudo de Literatura e Arte na Medicina (Elam) criou, durante o período da pandemia, momentos de discussão de literatura por meio de produção textual e discussões em mídia social, e principalmente por meio de atividades artísticas com pintura em aquarela e artes plásticas, para lidar com os conflitos apresentados pelos alunos na quarentena. Foram 24 telas de aquarela, vídeos, telas de colagem em artes plásticas e textos de crônicas e poesias. Os temas abordados nos textos foram principalmente: amor (N = 2), envelhecer (N = 2), pecado e religiosidade (N = 4), ciclo da vida (N = 6), câncer, caos, sabedoria, mortalidade (N = 3), tempo, olhar e ver (N = 2) e regionalismo (N = 2). Discussão: O enfrentamento da Covid-19 impõe o isolamento social, o distanciamento físico e a restrição à mobilidade das pessoas como medidas fundamentais para evitar a rápida disseminação do vírus. Quando o jovem não dispõe de mecanismos para lidar com a situação estressante propiciada pela situação, pode haver o desencadeamento de uma série de psicopatologias, como depressão, ansiedade e distúrbios do humor. É uma tendência mais ampla na educação médica: cada vez mais, as escolas de Medicina estão investindo em currículo e programação em torno das artes, e, no momento atual, essa estratégia de coping se torna importante no enfrentamento da pandemia pelo estudante de Medicina. Conclusão: Atravessar esse momento de pandemia pela Covid-19 exigiu uma estratégia de coping para ajudar os alunos a vivenciar e extravasar seus medos, sendo a arte a melhor forma de expressão, o que foi atingido pelo grupo Elam.
