Abstract Cyclodextrins (CDs) have the ability to encapsulate numerous molecules and have applicability in several industrial areas, however, their cost has made their use difficult. To seek alternatives that may enable the use of DCs, the present study evaluated the efficiency of the ultrafiltration process in a continuous system to produce CDs from the enzyme cyclomaltodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase) from recombinant Bacillus subtilis WB800. The possibility of using the crude enzyme as an alternative means of producing CDs was also evaluated. All strategies evaluated in this research proved to be promising for the production of CDs, with the production of β-CD being the most efficient (average of 15 mmol/L) using crude recombinant enzyme and a temperature of 50 °C. Therefore, the results obtained can contribute to the reduction of stages and costs of production of CDs, favoring their industrial application.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), previously known as Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is one of the most common hepatic diseases in individuals with overweight or obesity. In this context, a panel of experts from three medical societies was organized to develop an evidence-based guideline on the screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of MASLD. Material and methods: A MEDLINE search was performed to identify randomized clinical trials, meta-analyses, cohort studies, observational studies, and other relevant studies on NAFLD. In the absence of studies on a certain topic or when the quality of the study was not adequate, the opinion of experts was adopted. Classes of Recommendation and Levels of Evidence were determined using prespecified criteria. Results: Based on the literature review, 48 specific recommendations were elaborated, including 11 on screening and diagnosis, 9 on follow-up, 14 on nonpharmacologic treatment, and 14 on pharmacologic and surgical treatment. Conclusions: A literature search allowed the development of evidence-based guidelines on the screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of MASLD in individuals with overweight or obesity.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to produce and characterize biochar from sugarcane straw, as well as to investigate possible phytotoxic effects on the germination of cotton, maize, and soybean. To this end, the biochar was produced in a double-drum oven and characterized by different techniques. The germination trials were conducted in vitro, with biochar doses varying between 0 and 100 t/ha. The biochar was obtained with a yield of 40%, pH equal to 9.10, electrical conductivity of 2.22 dS/m and specific surface area of 20.3 m2/g. The elemental analysis showed H/C and O/C atomic ratios of 0.41 and 0.21, respectively. The FTIR showed the presence of C=C groups, while SEM/EDS showed a honeycomb porous structure and nutrients such as Mg, K and Ca. The germination test classified the biochar as a phytonutrient for corn and showed no phytotoxicity for soybeans. On the other hand, for cotton, the highest doses (50 and 100 t/ha) caused phytotoxicity. The results of this work meet the global demands for green techniques. Biochar made from sugarcane straw is a promising technology to improve the infertility of poor soils and manage carbon sequestration.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi produzir e caracterizar o biocarvão a partir da palha de cana-de-açúcar, bem como investigar possíveis efeitos fitotóxicos às germinações de algodão, milho e soja. Para tanto, o biocarvão foi produzido em forno de duplo tambor e caracterizado por diferentes técnicas. Os ensaios de germinação foram conduzidos in vitro, com doses de biocarvão variando entre 0 e 100 t/ha. O biocarvão foi obtido com rendimento de 40%, pH igual a 9,10, condutividade elétrica de 2,22 dS/m e área superficial específica de 20,3 m2/g. A análise elementar mostrou razões atômicas H/C e O/C de 0,41 e 0,21, respectivamente. A FTIR mostrou a presença de grupos C=C, enquanto a MEV/EDS mostrou estrutura porosa tipo favo de mel e nutrientes, como o Mg, K e Ca. O ensaio de germinação classificou o biocarvão como fitoestimulante para o milho e mostrou ausência de fitotoxicidade para soja. Por outro lado, para o algodão, as doses mais elevadas (50 e 100 t/ha) causaram fitotoxicidade. Os resultados deste trabalho vêm ao encontro das demandas globais por técnicas verdes. O biocarvão feito da palha de cana-de-açúcar é uma tecnologia promissora para melhorar a infertilidade de solos pobres e gerir o sequestro de carbono.

Abstract Polyurethanes, versatile polymers extensively explored across industries, can be augmented by incorporating complementary materials like lanthanides. This research presents a novel approach, employing a one-shot synthesis to create polyurethane-lanthanide composites using polyol, isocyanate, samarium, and holmium oxides. FTIR and Raman spectroscopy affirmed successful polyurethane matrix formation, while XRD unveiled distinct phases in lanthanide-loaded matrices versus soft, low-crystallinity polyurethane in control foam. Optical microscopy displayed morphology alterations due to samarium and holmium. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed heightened composite thermal stability compared to control foam. Looking ahead, these outcomes prompt further exploration of polyurethane-lanthanide composites, particularly in harnessing property changes for diverse applications. RESUMO Objetivo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a prevalência de comportamento suicida (ideação, plano e tentativa) nos últimos 12 meses e ao longo da vida e fatores associados entre alunos de Medicina da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Métodos Um estudo seccional foi desenvolvido em uma amostra representativa e aleatória (n = 324) de 1.217 estudantes de Medicina da UFRJ entre abril e novembro de 2019. Os dados foram coletados por cinco pesquisadores em uma entrevista presencial com 296 alunos (taxa de participação de 91,4%), usando um questionário do Estudo Multicêntrico de Intervenção no Comportamento Suicida para avaliar o comportamento suicida, o PHQ-9 (Questionário de Saúde do Paciente-9) para avaliar o episódio depressivo maior e o ASSIST (Teste de Triagem do Envolvimento com Substâncias) para aferir o uso e abuso de substâncias. Para a avaliação das associações, utilizou-se o modelo de regressão logística. Resultados As prevalências nos últimos 12 meses foram de 18,9% (IC de 95%: 14,9-23,8) para ideação, 6,1% (IC de 95%: 3,9-9,4) para plano e 1,7% (IC de 95%: 0,7-4,1) para tentativa de suicídio. As prevalências ao longo da vida foram de 27,7% (IC de 95%: 22,9-33,0) para ideação, 12,5% (IC de 95%: 9,2-16,7) para plano e 5,7% (IC de 95%: 3,6-9,0) para tentativa de suicídio. Os resultados encontrados foram maiores que os achados dos estudos nacionais. O episódio depressivo maior e o tratamento psicológico atual foram associados ao comportamento suicida na análise final. Conclusões A associação com tratamento em saúde mental e episódio depressivo maior sugere que as universidades deveriam implementar programas para a prevenção do comportamento suicida.

ABSTRACT Objective The aim of this paper is to analyze the lifetime and past 12-month prevalence rates of suicidal behavior (suicidal ideation, suicide plans and suicidal attempt) and associated factors among medical students at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Methods Sectional study was applied to a representative and random set (n = 324) of 1,217 medical students between April and November of 2019. The data were collected by five researchers through in-person interviews with 296 of 324 volunteers (participation rate of 91.4%), using the Multisite Intervention Study on Suicidal Behavior interview to assess suicidal behavior, the PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) to assess major depressive episode, and ASSIST (Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test) to assess substance use and abuse. A logistic regression model was used to calculate associations. Results The rates of past-12 month were found to be 18.9% (CI 95%: 14.9-23.8) for ideation, 6.1% (CI 95%: 3.9-9.4) for suicide plans and 1.7% (CI 95%: 0.7-4.1) for suicidal attempts. The lifetime prevalence rates were 27.7% (CI 95%: 22,9-33,0) for suicidal ideation, 12.5% (CI 95%: 9.2-16.7) for plans and 5.7% (CI 95%: 3.6-9.0) for suicidal attempts. These rates are higher than the measured results among medical students in Brazil. The factors associated in the final analysis were the major depressive episode and current psychological treatment. Conclusions The association between mental health treatment and major depressive episode suggest that the universities should implement suicidal behavior prevention programs.

Abstract Persea americana Mill., belonging to the family Lauraceae, is noteworthy for the large amount of ethnopharmacological information in its regard, attributing to it many and varied medicinal properties. The tea and alcoholic extracts made from its leaves are used in folk medicine to treat various ailments. This study was designed to analyze the cytogenotoxicity and underlying chemistry of aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts of avocado leaves, using the Allium cepa and micronucleus tests. The results obtained by applying the experimental models demonstrate that the extracts did not have a genotoxic effect at any of the concentrations analyzed, and even demonstrated a certain protective effect, possibly due to the presence of flavonoids and phenols, both of which are antioxidant substances. However, the extracts did present a cytotoxic effect. There were numerous karyorrhectic cells and those with nuclear alterations related to cell death. At the highest concentrations, it was possible to observe cytoplasmic alterations and binucleated cells. The extracts also caused a significant reduction in the number of cells undergoing division. These effects can be a response to the phytochemical agents present in the extracts. The results suggest that the extracts contain bioactive components that deserve further studies related to cancer therapies.

ABSTRACT Background and aims: Treatment of hepatitis C with direct antiviral agents (DAA) is associated with almost 95% of sustained virological response. However, some patients need retreatment. In Brazil, it should be done according to the Ministry of Health guidelines, frequently updated to include newly available drugs. This study aimed to conduct a national survey about the characteristics and outcomes of retreatment of hepatitis C in previously non-responders to DAAs. Patients and methods: Institutions from all over the country were invited to participate in a national registry for retreatment, including information about clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the patients, type and outcomes of retreatment regimens. Only patients previously treated with interferon-free regimens were included. Results: As previous treatments the distribution was: SOF/DCV (56%), SOF/SIM (22%), 3D (11%), SOF/LED (6%) and SOF/RBV (5%). For retreatment the most frequently used drugs were SOF/GP (46%), SOF/DCV (23%) and SOF/VEL (11%). From 159 patients retreated, 132/159 (83%) had complete information in the registry and among them only seven patients were non-responders (SVR of 94.6%). All retreatments were well tolerated, without any serious adverse events or interruptions. Conclusion: The retreatment of patients previously non-responders to DAAs was associated with high rate of SVR in this sample of Brazilian patients. This finding allows us to conclude that the retreatment options available in the public health system in Brazil are effective and safe and are an important component of the strategy of elimination of hepatitis C in our country.

Abstract Maintenance of snakes at Butantan Institute started in the last century, intending to produce a different antivenom serum to reduce death caused by snakebites. Through a successful campaign coordinated by Vital Brazil, farmers sent venomous snakes to Butantan Institute by the railway lines with no cost. From 1908 to 1962, the snakes were kept in an outdoor serpentarium, where venom extraction was performed every 15 days. During this period, the snake average survival was 15 days. In 1963, the snakes were transferred to an adapted building, currently called Laboratory of Herpetology (LH), to be maintained in an intensive system. Although the periodicity of venom extraction remained the same, animal average survival increased to two months. With the severe serum crisis in 1983, the Ministry of Health financed remodeling for the three public antivenom producers, and with this support, the LH could be improved. Air conditioning and exhausting systems were installed in the rooms, besides the settlement of critical hygienic-sanitary managements to increase the welfare of snakes. In the early 1990s, snake survival was ten months. Over the years to the present day, several improvements have been made in the intensive serpentarium, as the establishment of two quarantines, feeding with thawed rodents, an interval of two months between venom extraction routines, and monitoring of snake health through laboratory tests. With these new protocols, average snake survival increased significantly, being eight years for the genus Bothrops, ten years for genus Crotalus and Lachesis, and four years for the genus Micrurus. Aiming the production of venoms of good quality, respect for good management practices is essential for the maintenance of snakes in captivity. New techniques and efficient management must always be sought to improve animal welfare, the quality of the venom produced, and the safety of those working directly with the venomous snakes.

Resumo: Introdução: A pandemia provocada pela Covid-19 pode ser considerada um evento estressante grave e desencadear repercussões negativas na saúde mental dos estudantes de Medicina, como sofrimento psíquico e desenvolvimento ou agravamento de transtornos mentais, trazendo prejuízos à vida acadêmica, social e profissional desses alunos. Em consequência da interrupção das aulas e do distanciamento social preconizado pelos órgãos de saúde durante a pandemia, o Setor de Atendimento em Saúde Mental destinado aos alunos de Medicina da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) necessitou cancelar os atendimentos presenciais do Hospital Universitário Clementino Fraga Filho no início de março de 2020 e pensar em outras formas de cuidado em saúde mental para esses alunos. Relato de experiência: Trata-se de um relato de experiência acerca da implementação do teleatendimento em saúde mental destinado aos estudantes de Medicina da UFRJ durante a pandemia, para a continuidade do cuidado em saúde mental de forma remota, iniciado no final de março de 2020. O atendimento está sendo ofertado por uma equipe de cinco psiquiatras, uma psicóloga e uma assistente social, todos funcionários da universidade. Discussão: O teleatendimento tem servido como um espaço importante de escuta e acolhimento diante das demandas psicossociais desses alunos e tem como desafio ultrapassar algumas barreiras que dificultam o acesso e a disponibilidade de serviços de saúde mental no campus universitário, incluindo a preservação da relação médico-paciente, a garantia da confidencialidade e qualidade, e a oferta de um espaço de cuidado em saúde mental quando a presença física não é possível. Conclusão: Apesar das dificuldades inerentes ao rápido processo de implementação desse serviço, percebe-se o potencial da tecnologia em auxiliar a população nesse momento crítico, em especial na atenção à saúde mental de grupos específicos como os estudantes de Medicina. O teleatendimento representa um potencial de aprendizado e mudança nas formas de como o acesso ao cuidado é ofertado, com a perspectiva de trazer benefícios à saúde mental dos estudantes, mesmo após o período atual da pandemia, com a meta de expansão desses atendimentos para outros cursos da UFRJ.

Abstract: Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic can be considered a severely stressful event and trigger negative repercussions on the mental health of medical students, such as psychological distress and the development or worsening of mental disorders, harming the academic, social and professional life of these students. As a result of the interruption of classes and the social distancing measures advocated by health agencies during the pandemic, the mental health care sector for medical students at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) needed to cancel the face-to-face care at the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital in early March 2020 and think of other forms of mental health care for these students. Experience report: This is an experience report about the implementation of telemental health care for medical students at UFRJ during the pandemic, for the continuity of mental health care program using remote assistance, started in late March 2020. The service is being offered by a team of five psychiatrists, a psychologist and a social worker, all university employees. Discussion: The teleservice has served as an important space for listening and embracement in face of these students’ psychosocial demands, whose challenge consists in overcoming some barriers that hinder the availability of and access to mental health services on the university campus, including the preservation of the doctor-patient relationship, the guarantee of confidentiality and quality, and the offer of a space for mental health care when the physical presence is not possible. Conclusion: Despite the difficulties inherent in the rapid process of implementing this service, the potential of technology to help the population at this critical moment is perceived, especially regarding the attention to the mental health of specific groups, such as medical students. The telehealth represents a potential for learning and change in the ways how the access to care is offered, with the perspective of bringing benefits to the students’ mental health, even after the current period of the pandemic, with the goal of expanding these services to other courses of the UFRJ.

ABSTRACT: Companies develop strategies to describe where they want to go and how they will reach their destination. Business strategies are useful but may not be sufficiently detailed for areas of high importance, such as technology and innovation. In this paper we examined the effort of building a technology roadmap with an early growth stage company located in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Roadmaps are easy to design yet flexible tools that can allow decision makers to explore a myriad of possible strategies. However, the challenges ahead for new companies facing uncertain growth scenarios demand that framework conditions be adequately addressed, and that innovation culture and technology management tools are integrated with the technology roadmapping strategy. Based on the empirical evidence collected from the startup studied, along with the literature and interviews with key stakeholders, this paper developed a pathway to support technology and innovation plans for startups going through similar growth stages and provides directions for future research in the area, given the scarcity of evidence available of new high-tech companies' efforts in planning and developing new products

Laurus nobilis L. is a large shrub belonging to the Lauracea family. Its leaves are widely used for food seasoning as well as in folk medicine. Various studies have demonstrated the antiproliferative, antifungal and antibacterial effects of Laurus nobilis, but no studies have investigated the genotoxic effect of the aqueous extract of the plant. The objective of this study was to analyze the genotoxic potential of an aqueous extract of leaves, using the Allium cepa assay and mouse peripheral blood cell micronucleus test. The results showed that the extract did not have any genotoxic activity, but cytotoxic activity was observed in the two experimental models used. The extract had an antiproliferative effect, detected through the reduction of the mitotic index and the polychromatic/normochromatic erythrocyte (PCE/NCE) ratio. The tests also demonstrated a large number of cells undergoing apoptosis and with nuclear abnormalities related to cell death processes. These results can be explained by the presence of phenolic compounds, saponins, flavonoids and alkaloids, detected in the phytochemical analysis of the extract. Therefore, the extract from L. nobilis in the form generally used by the population does not pose risks related to its genotoxic potential, and also contains components with apoptotic and antigenotoxic potential.

Resumen El objetivo de este artículo es analizar las expresiones de la desigualdad de género en las clases de Educación Física (EF) en la escuela, teniendo como objeto de investigación un estudio realizado en dos escuelas públicas de Educación Básica del municipio de Pelotas-RS. Para la investigación, se realizó análisis de documentos y se usaron cuestionarios estructurados con preguntas abiertas y cerradas, contestados por estudiantes de tercer año de secundaria. Los resultados a los que llegamos señalan que la perspectiva hegemónica de la EF reproduce las desigualdades de la sociedad en general, profundizando la desigualdad y la opresión a la mujer.

Abstract The present article aims to analyze the expressions of gender inequality in Physical Education (PE) classes in school, with a study performed in two primary schools from Pelotas-RS as its object of investigation. The data was obtained by means of document analysis and open and closed - ended questions in questionnaires answered by 11th grade students. The results show that the hegemonic perspective of PE reproduces social inequalities in general, making inequality and women’s oppression deeper.

Resumo O objetivo desse artigo é analisar as expressões da desigualdade de gênero nas aulas de Educação Física (EF) na escola, tendo como objeto de investigação um estudo realizado em duas escolas públicas de educação básica no município de Pelotas-RS. Para a pesquisa, realizou-se análise de documentos e utilização de questionários estruturados com perguntas abertas e fechadas, respondido por estudantes do terceiro ano do Ensino Médio. Os resultados a que chegamos é de que a perspectiva hegemônica de EF reproduz as desigualdades da sociedade em geral, aprofundando a desigualdade e opressão à mulher.

Resumo Introdução Conhecer a dimensão das limitações do comportamento social em pessoas com transtornos mentais graves habitantes de serviços residenciais terapêuticos (SRT) é crucial para gestores e profissionais de saúde mental envolvidos na prestação de cuidados baseados na comunidade. Assim, realizou-se um estudo transversal em indivíduos que residem nesses serviços em uma pequena cidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Carmo). Objetivo Avaliar limitações do comportamento social dos entrevistados através da Escala de Comportamento Social (SBS). Método Os dados foram coletados em Janeiro/Fevereiro, 2017, utilizando a SBS. Resultados A amostra foi composta majoritariamente de homens, com idade média de 60,4 anos, analfabetos, com esquizofrenia e outros transtornos psicóticos, provenientes do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, sem contato com suas famílias, com um longo período de hospitalização prévia e recebendo benefícios. Aproximadamente 96% dos residentes mostraram, pelo menos, um problema de comportamento social, frequentemente relacionados à aparência pessoal/higiene, comunicação: tomando a iniciativa (a pessoas inicia as conversações?), lentidão, rir e falar sozinho, comportamento não especificado (qualquer outro comportamento ou atitude não previamente especificado, que parece estar atrasando o progresso da pessoa). Conclusão A população estudada apresentou alta frequência de limitação de problema social, podendo impedir sua reintegração, tornando-se necessário implementar programas de reabilitação social para este grupo.

Abstract Background Knowledge about the extent of social disablement among people with severe mental disorders living in therapeutic residential services is crucial for policy makers and mental health professionals involved in the delivery of community-base care. A cross-sectional study was conducted with people living in therapeutic residential services in the municipality of Carmo, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Objective Evaluate limitations of the social behavior of the interviewees through the Social Behavior Scale (SBS). Method Data were collected between January and February 2017 using the SBS. Results The sample was composed mostly of men from Rio de Janeiro state, with mean age of 60.4 years, illiterate, benefit recipients, with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders and a long period of previous hospitalization with no contact with their families. Approximately 96% of them showed at least one social behavior problem, often related to poor self-care, little spontaneous communication (Does the person start a conversation?), slowness, laughing and talking to self, and other problems (any other behavior or attitude not previously specified that seem to be delaying the progress of the person). Conclusion This population presented high frequency of social disablement that may prevent their social reintegration, evidencing the need for implementing social rehabilitation programs.
