Abstract The iAtlantic Project has established an international collaborative strategy to improve mapping and characterization of deep and open ocean ecosystems in understudied regions of the Atlantic and evaluate their health. In December 2022, the first iAtlantic expedition in the South Atlantic set off to map and explore seafloor ecosystems in the Santos Basin slope (200-1,000 m depths) in collaboration with the Petrobras ‘Santos Basin - Regional Characterization Project.’ The 17-day ‘iAtlantic_BR10-Petrobras’ cruise was conducted on board the research vessel NPqHOc Vital de Oliveira (Brazilian Navy) and performed (a) water column structure characterization, (b) seafloor morphology mapping, (c) description of benthic habitats and communities by seafloor imagery and biological/ geological sampling, and (d) ex-situ experiments to assess the functioning of sedimentary ecosystems and their responses to climate-related environmental changes. This study describes the rationale behind the iAtlantic_BR10-Petrobras cruise science plan, reports its sampling strategy and methods, and summarizes its collected data and preliminary results.

Abstract Background: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is an effective treatment for patients with heart failure. Objective: To evaluate the response of CRT in maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), peak expiratory flow (PEF), and exercise tolerance as determined by the six-minute walk test (6MWT) in patients with HF. Methods: This study used the 6MWT and Manovacuometer to assess functional capacity in relation to activities of daily living, in which fatigue and dyspnea are common. Results: After six months of CRT, this study identified improvements in the 6MWT, p<0.05; MIP, p=0.01; and PEF, p=0.03. Conclusion: After CRT, this study showed a significant improvement in MIP, PEF, and exercise tolerance. However, further studies are warranted to demonstrate the relevance of these findings.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Telomere length (TL) is a biomarker of cellular proliferative history. In healthy individuals, leukocyte TL shortens with age and associates with the lifespan of men and women. However, most of studies had used linear regression models to address the association of the TL attrition, aging and sex. Methods: We evaluated the association between the TL, aging and sex in a cohort of 180 healthy subjects by quantile regression. The TL of nucleated blood cells was measured by fluorescent in situ hypridization (flow-FISH) in a cohort of 89 men, 81 women, and 10 umbilical cord samples. The results were validated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and compared to a linear regression analysis. Results: By quantile regression, telomere dynamics slightly differed between sexes with aging: women had longer telomeres at birth and slower attrition rate than men until the sixth decade of life; after that, TL eroded faster and became shorter than that in men. These differences were not observed by linear regression analysis, as the overall telomere attrition rates in women and men were similar (42 pb per year, p < 0.0001 vs. 45 pb kb per year, p < 0.0001). Also, qPCR did not recapitulate flow-FISH findings, as the telomere dynamics by qPCR followed a linear model. Conclusion: The quantile regression analysis accurately reproduced a third-orderpolynomial TL attrition rate in both women and men, but it depended on the technique applied to measure TL. The Flow-FISH reproduced the expected telomere dynamics through life and, differently from the qPCR, was able to detect the subtle TL variations associated with sex and aging.

RESUMO: Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum e Sarcocystis spp. são parasitas detectados em tecidos de animais domésticos e selvagens. As aves são relevantes no ciclo de vida e epidemiologia dos protozoários devido à grande variedade de espécies de aves, hábitos alimentares e migratórios. O objetivo deste estudo foi a detecção molecular de T. gondii, N. caninum e Sarcocystis spp. em diversas espécies de aves naturalmente infectadas. Portanto, amostras de tecido de cérebro e coração foram coletados de aves recebidas e necropsiadas no Laboratório Central de Diagnóstico de Patologias Aviárias (LCDPA), sendo submetidas a extração de DNA e amplificação pela reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) do gene 18S rRNA para Sarcocystis spp., gene NC5 para N. caninum e gene repetitivo 529 pares de bases para T. gondii. N. caninum foi detectado em duas aves (02/65; 3,07%), em amostra de cérebro de Rupornis magnisrostris (número acesso: ON182081, 267pb) e em amostras de cérebro e coração de Dendrocygna bicolor (número acesso: ON211312, 267pb). DNA do genero Sarcocystis spp. foi detectado em três aves (03/65; 4,62%), sendo que no sequenciamento genético foram identificados Sarcocystis spp. (número acesso: MW463929) em cérebro de Nymphicus hollandicus e Sarcocystis speeri (número acesso: MW464125) em cérebro e coração de Amazona aestiva. A análise filogenética revelou que Sarcocystis spp. formou um clado com Sarcocystis spp. que utilizam gambá (Didelphis aurita) como hospedeiro definitivo e S. falcatula que utilizam Lóris-molucano (Trichoglossus moluccanus) como hospedeiro intermediário. S. speeri formou um clado com S. speeri que utilizou Mus musculus como hospedeiro intermediário experimental e formou um clado com Sarcocystis columbae, Sarcocystis corvusi, Sarcocystis halieti e Sarcocystis sp. que afetam espécies de aves. O DNA de T. gondii não foi detectado em nenhum tecido. Este é o primeiro relato de detecção de DNA de N. caninum, Sarcocystis spp. e S. speeri em amostras de tecido para essas espécies de aves estendendo a lista de hospedeiros intermediários.

ABSTRACT: Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum and Sarcocystis spp. are parasites detected in tissues of domestic and wild animals. Birds are relevant in the life cycle and epidemiology of protozoa due to the wide variety of bird species, feeding and migratory habits. The aim of this study was the molecular detection of T. gondii, N. caninum and Sarcocystis spp. in several species of naturally infected birds. Therefore, samples of brain and heart tissue were collected from birds received and necropsied at the Central Laboratory for the Diagnosis of Avian Pathologies (LCDPA), undergoing DNA extraction and amplification by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the 18S rRNA gene to Sarcocystis spp., NC5 gene for N. caninum and repetitive gene 529 base pairs for T. gondii. N. caninum was detected in two birds (02/65, 3.07%), in a brain sample of Rupornis magnisrostris (accession number: ON182081, 267pb) and in a brain and heart sample of Dendrocygna bicolor (accession number: ON211312, 267pb). DNA of the genus Sarcocystis was detected in three birds (03/65, 4.62%), and in the genetic sequencing Sarcocystis spp. (accession number: MW463929) in brain of Nymphicus hollandicus and Sarcocystis speeri (accession number: MW464125) in brain and heart of Amazona aestiva. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Sarcocystis spp. formed a clade with Sarcocystis spp. that use skunk (Didelphis aurita) as definitive host and Sarcocystis falcatula that use Moluccan loris (Trichoglossus moluccanus) as intermediate host. S. speeri formed a clade with S. speeri that used Mus musculus as an experimental intermediate host and formed a clade with Sarcocystis columbae, Sarcocystis corvusi, Sarcocystis halieti and Sarcocystis sp. that affect bird species. T. gondii DNA was not detected in any tissue. This is the first report of DNA detection of N. caninum, Sarcocystis spp. and S. speeri in tissue samples for these bird species extending the list of intermediate hosts.

Abstract Samanea tubulosa Benth. it has been widely used in traditional medicine to treat inflammatory processes. The present study aimed to investigate the antinociceptive effect and mechanism of action of the fractions obtained from the Samanea tubulosa pods in mice. The antinociceptive activity was evaluated in formalin, capsaicin and glutamate tests and the. The possible mechanisms of action involved in the antinociceptive effect of the hexane and ethyl acetate fraction in the opioid system, also the the K + ATP channels and the L-arigine pathways of nitric oxide were evaluated. The chemical characterization analysis revealed in the hexane fraction the presence of triterpenes such as lupenone and lupeol. In the glutamate test, the hexane and ethyl acetate fractions showed antinociceptive activity at the dose of 12.5 and 25 mg kg-1. The antinociception produced by the hexane and ethyl acetate fractions was significantly reversed by naloxone, indicating that the fractions act through the opioid pathway. Antinociceptive response of the ethyl acetate fraction was blocked by glibenclamide, indicating that this fraction acts via the K + ATP channels activation. It is concluded that the fractions under study exert antinociceptive activity possibly related to the opioid route and through K+ ATP channels activation.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar doses adequadas de nitrogênio para alcançar produtividade, qualidade das frutas e teor de nutrientes satisfatórios em cladódios de três espécies de pitaia. O delineamento experimental foi feito em blocos ao acaso, com arranjo fatorial 3×4. Os tratamentos consistiram das seguintes espécies de pitaia e doses de N: Selenicereus megalanthus, Hylocereus undatus e Hylocereus polyrhizus; e 0, 50, 100 e 200 g de N por planta, no primeiro ciclo de produção (safra 2016/2017) e 50, 100, 200 e 300 g de N por planta, no segundo e terceiro ciclos de produção (safras 2017/2018 e 2018/2019). A fertilização com N aumentou a produtividade, a qualidade das frutas e o teor de nutrientes nos cladódios das espécies. No terceiro ciclo de produção, a produtividade foi de 1,18 Mg ha-1 para S. megalanthus, 10,87 Mg ha-1 para H. undatus e 10,4 Mg ha-1 para H. polyrhizus em polinização aberta. A maior produtividade é obtida com 300 g de N por planta para S. megalanthus. Para H. polyrhizus e H. undatus, as doses são de 170 a 190 g de N por planta, complementadas com P e K.

Abstract The objective of this work was to determine adequate rates of nitrogen to reach satisfactory yield, fruit quality, and cladode nutrient content in three species of pitaya. The experimental design was carried out in randomized complete blocks, with a 3×4 factorial arrangement. The treatments consisted of the following pitaya species and N rates: Selenicereus megalanthus, Hylocereus undatus, and Hylocereus polyrhizus; and 0, 50, 100, and 200 g N per plant, in the first production cycle (2016/2017 crop season) and 50, 100, 200, and 300 g N per plant, in the second and third production cycles (2017/2018 and 2018/2019 crop seasons). Nitrogen fertilization increased the yield, fruit quality, and cladode nutrient content of the species. In the third production cycle, yield was 1.18 Mg ha-1 for S. megalanthus, 10.87 Mg ha-1 for H. undatus, and 10.4 Mg ha-1 for H. polyrhizus in open pollination. The highest yield is obtained with 300 g N per plant for S. megalanthus. For H. polyrhizus and H. undatus the rates are from 170 to 190 g N per plant, supplemented with P and K.

Hospital infections (HI) are a serious public health problem in many countries. Several studies have identified strains correlating to surgical site infections, many with multi-resistance. The goals of this study was to quantify, to identify and to verify the resistance profile of microorganisms collected at two hospitals settings, and to alert health professionals how environmental contamination can influence hospital infection rates. For air sampling in operating rooms, intensive care unit and materials sterilization center, the impaction method (Spin Air, IUL®) and passive sedimentation were used. For the isolation of bacteria on surfaces and uniforms contact plates (RODAC®) were used. Identification of the microorganisms was performed using Vitek® 2 Systems. The antibiograms were conducted according to the disk diffusion method recommended by CLSI. The surgical center of hospital B presented more than 500 CFU/m3 in aerial microbial load. In the aerial microbiota of the sampled areas of both hospitals, M. luteus, S. haemolyticus and S. hominis spp hominis were the prevalent microorganisms, with a percentage greater than 30%. On the surfaces and uniforms there was a prevalence of M. luteus (40%) and S. hominis spp hominis (20%) among others, and some of the resistant strains were isolated from environments with microbial load within the recommended limits.

RESUMEN El propósito de este artículo es ayudar a los dentistas clínicos a identificar la neurofibromatosis tipo 1 y sus variantes. Presentamos un caso raro de un hombre de 68 años, afectado desde la infancia por la presencia de nódulos generalizados en todo el cuerpo, provocando deformaciones estéticas. Curiosamente, el impacto en la cavidad oral no fue significativo, con nódulos solo en la encía, un área de manifestación raro. La radiografía panorámica mostró un ligero agrandamiento del canal mandibular. Tras un año de seguimiento, el paciente falleció por complicaciones cardiovasculares provocadas por el síndrome.

RESUMO: A giardíase é uma zoonose importante e prevalente em cães e humanos, sendo causada por Giardia spp. A estreita relação entre animais de estimação e seres humanos traz benefícios físicos, emocionais e sociais. Os cães têm um papel importante no ciclo e transmissão de Giardia duodenalis. Este estudo teve como objetivo verificar a ocorrência do parasita em cães da Região Central, em Santa Maria, RS, Brasil, de abril a outubro de 2018. As fezes de cães (230) foram submetidas a técnica coproparasitológica de Faust e análises moleculares. As amostras positivas no nested-PCR (gene β-giardin) foram enviadas para sequenciamento de DNA e posterior análise filogenética (Neighbor-Joining). A ocorrência de G. duodenalis foi de 5,6% (13/230) e 4,3% (10/230) detectados pela técnica coproparasitológica e nested-PCR, respectivamente. Não houve diferença na sensibilidade dos testes utilizados. Das amostras fecais analisadas, não houve diferenças entre as variáveis: técnicas de diagnóstico, local, sexo e idade dos animais (p>0,05). Somente na metodologia de exame de fezes observou-se diferença entre as idades (p<0,05). As assemblages de G. duodenalis encontradas foram C e D, frequentemente relatadas em cães. A estreita relação entre cães e pessoas pode permitir co-infecções de parasitas circulantes na população, incluindo Giardia spp. e aumentando o risco de transmissão de agentes zoonóticos.

ABSTRACT: Giardiasis is an important and prevalent zoonosis in dogs and humans caused by Giardia spp. The close relationship between pets and humans has physical, emotional and social benefits. The dogs have an important role in Giardia duodenalis cycle and transmission. This study aimed to verify the occurrence of the parasite in dogs from Central Region, in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, from April to October 2018. Dog feces (230) were submitted to Faust coproparasitological and molecular analyses. The positive samples in the nested-PCR (β-giardin gene) were sent for DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analyses (Neighbor-Joining). The occurrence of G. duodenalis, was 5.6% (13/230) and 4.3% (10/230) detected by coproparasitological technique and nested-PCR, respectively. There was no difference in the sensitivity of the tests used. From the faecal samples analyzed, there were no differences among the variables: diagnostic techniques, local, sex, and age of the animals (p>0.05). Only in the stool examination methodology a difference was observed between the ages (p<0.05). G. duodenalis assemblages were C and D, frequently reported in dogs. The close relationship between dogs and people may allow co-infections of circulating parasites in the population, including Giardia spp. and increasing the risk of transmission of zoonotic agents.

RESUMO A produtividade de mandioca no Brasil, em 2019, foi de 18 t ha-1, muito aquém do seu potencial. O fósforo é um nutriente determinante da produtividade e encontra-se em níveis muito baixos em solos tropicais. Assim, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar doses de fósforo na produtividade e qualidade de raízes tuberosas de cultivares de mandioca na savana amazônica. O experimento foi instalado no delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, com 4 repetições. Nas parcelas foram aleatorizadas cinco doses de fósforo (0, 45, 90, 180 e 360 kg ha-1 de P2O5) e nas subparcelas duas cultivares de mandioca (Aciolina e Amazonas). Aos 12 meses de cultivo, as raízes tuberosas foram colhidas e avaliadas. O teor de ácido cianídrico não foi influenciado pelos fatores em estudo. O índice de colheita foi dependente, apenas, das cultivares, sendo superior na cv. Amazonas. A cv. Amazonas foi mais produtiva (86 t ha-1), porém, menos eficiente na utilização do P. A produtividade das cultivares Aciolina e Amazonas foram incrementadas em 125 e 82%, até as doses de máxima eficiência técnica de 192 e 208 kg ha-1 de P2O5, respectivamente. Portanto, a adubação fosfatada é uma boa opção para o cultivo da mandioca.

ABSTRACT In 2019, cassava productivity in Brazil was 18 t ha-1, well below its potential. Phosphorus is a nutrient that determines productivity and is found at very low levels in tropical soils. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate phosphorus doses in the yield and quality of tuberous roots of cassava cultivars in the Amazonian savanna. The experiment was installed in a randomized block design, in a split-plot scheme, with 4 replications. In the plots, five doses of phosphorus were randomized: 0, 45, 90, 180 and 360 kg ha-1 de P2O5 and in the subplots two cultivars (Aciolina and Amazonas). At 12 months the plants were harvested and the effect of treatments was evaluated. The HCN content was not influenced by the factors under study. The CI was dependent only on the cultivars, being higher in cv. Amazonas. The cv. Amazonas was more productive (86 t ha-1), but less efficient in the use of P. The productivity of the cultivars Aciolina and Amazonas were increased by 125 and 82%, up to the doses of maximum technical efficiency of 192 and 208 kg ha-1 de P2O5, respectively. Therefore, phosphate fertilization is a good option for the cultivation of cassava.

Maytenus distichophylla is a medicinal species used in Northeast of Brazil. The hexane (HE), chloroform (CE), ethyl acetate (EAE) and methanol (ME) extracts and compounds from its roots were evaluated for their protective activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The cytotoxicity for chronic myeloid leukemia (K562), acute monocytic leukemia (THP-1), and peripheral blood mononuclear cells of normal individuals (PBMC) cells was established by MTT method using etoposide as standard. The in vivo toxicity of samples was determined using Caenorhabditis elegans model. From HE and CE were isolated: friedelan-3-one (1), b-sitosterol (2), 3-oxo-olean-9(11),12-diene (3), a mixture of pristimerin (4) and 11a-hydroxylup-20(29)-en-3-one (5), 30-hydroxylup-20(29)-en-3-one (6), friedelane-3,7-dione (7), tingenone (8) and triacylglycerol (9). The structures of 1-9 were confirmed by spectral data. All samples reduced the viability of S. aureus and present no effect against C. albicans. The HE, CE, mixture of 4/5 and 8 reduced 75% of S. aureus viability. Cytotoxic effect for K562 and THP-1 cells was caused by compounds 1, 2 and 8. All samples displayed selectivity for leukemic cells and low toxicity to PBMC cells, suggesting their potential as anticancer agents. Extracts and compounds were non-toxic to L1 larvae of C. elegans. However, most of them reduced significantly young adult worm’s survival, being considered as potential nematicides.

Salacia crassifolia traditionally known as “Bacupari-do-Cerrado” is used to treat kidney problems, and as a healing agent for coughs and malaria. The phytochemical study of the S. crassifolia roots led to the isolation of thirteen compounds: abruslactone-A (1), urs-12-ene-3β,25,30-triol (2), carioprystimerin (3), β-sitosterol (4), pristimerin (5), dispermoquinone (6), netzahualcoyonol (7), 20-hydroxy-20-epi-tingenone (8), 6-oxo-pristimerol (9), 9β,10β-epoxi-3β-hydroxy-1βH,4βH,5βH,7βH,11αH-guaian-12,8β-olide (10), 3-O-b-D-glucosyl-b-sitosterol (11), 4`-O-methylepigalocatechin (12) and cerebroside (13). The chemical structures of 1-13 were determined by IR, 1D/2D NMR together with X-ray diffractometry. Compounds 2 and 10 are herein described for the first time. Extracts of S. crassifolia and compounds 3, 5, 8 and 9 were evaluated on acetylcholinesterase inhibition, in vitro cytotoxic activity and in vivo toxicity tests using Caenorhabditis elegans model. All tested compounds inhibited acetylcholinesterase, and compounds 3, 8 and 9 demonstrated a greater potential when compared to the standard eserine. The tested compounds showed low cytotoxicity against the THP-1, K562 and MDA-MB-231 cancer cell lines. None of the tested compounds and extracts were toxic against C. elegans since the larvae survival rate in L1 stage was higher than 90%.

RESUMO: A indução do parto visa concentrar os nascimentos para melhor acompanhamento das parturientes e primeiros cuidados aos neonatos. Contudo, mesmo que a técnica de indução de parto, com administração de dexametasona, tenha sido descrita com sucesso desde o final da década de 70, existem estudos escassos que relatam a influência desta técnica sobre o parto em ovinos da raça Santa Inês. Dessa forma, o objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a eficácia da dexametasona em duas doses (8 e 16mg), para a indução do parto de ovelhas Santa Inês com 145 dias de gestação e avaliar os seus efeitos nas características de desencadeamento e finalização do parto. Para este estudo foram utilizadas 58 ovelhas, criadas em sistema extensivo nas fazendas experimentais da UFBA, com prenhez confirmada após inseminação artificial em tempo fixo ou monta controlada. Essas fêmeas foram separadas em três grupos, de acordo com a dose de dexametasona administrada (G1 = 0mg, G2 = 8mg e G3 = 16mg). Destes partos nasceram 79 cordeiros. Foram avaliados o período em horas da indução do parto aos nascimentos, a apresentação fetal ao nascimento, assim como o peso da placenta e o período para o delivramento. Os dados foram analisados pelo pacote estatístico Statistical Analysis System (SAS v.9.0®, 2002) sendo considerado para todas as análises o nível de significância de 5%. Os nascimentos dos grupos induzidos ocorreram em média com 48,4±22,1 horas após a indução, enquanto que as fêmeas com parto não induzido pariram em média 131,96±41,9 horas após aplicação do placebo (P<0,05), confirmando a eficácia de ambas as doses para indução do parto. O período da indução até o parto não diferiu (P>0,05) entre as doses utilizadas. Não ocorreram diferenças no parto em relação à estática fetal, tempo para o delivramento e peso da placenta nos diferentes grupos. Com este estudo, conclui-se que a indução de parto em ovelhas aos 145 dias de gestação com oito e 16 mg de dexametasona é uma técnica eficaz e que não altera o trabalho de parto nas ovelhas da raça Santa Inês.

ABSTRACT: The induction of labor aims to concentrate births to follow up better the parturient and the first care to the neonates. However, even if the labor induction technique with dexamethasone administration has been successfully described since the late 1970s, few studies report the technique of birth development and neonatal vitality in Santa Inês sheep. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of dexamethasone use in two doses (8 and 16mg) in labor induction of Santa Inês ewes at 145 days of gestation and to evaluate its effects on the birth characteristics. In this study, 58 ewes were used, raised in an extensive system in the experimental farms of UFBA, with confirmation pregnancy after fixed-time artificial insemination or controlled breeding. These female ewes were separated into three groups according to the dose of dexamethasone administered (G1 = 0mg, G2 = 8mg, and G3 = 16mg). From these births, 79 lambs were born. This study analyzed the period from induction of labor to birth, fetal presentation at birth, the weight of the placenta, and the period for placenta expulsion. The data were analyzed by the Statistical Analysis System (SAS v.9.1.3®, 2002), and the significance level considered for all analyzes was 5%. Births of induced groups occurred on average at 48.4±22.17 hours after induction, while the females with non-induced labor gave birth 131.96±41.9 hours on average after the placebo application (P<0.05), confirming the efficiency of both doses for induction of labor. The period from induction to birth did not differ (P>0.05) between the doses used. There were no differences in delivery about the fetal static relation, time to placental attachment, and weight. With this study, it can be concluded that the induction at 145 days of gestation with eight or 16mg of dexamethasone is a useful technique and does not alter the labor in Santa Inês sheep.

ABSTRACT Amblyomma Koch, 1844 is distributed worldwide, with ca. 130 species currently recognized. These ticks are vectors of pathogens to animals and humans, including the causative agent of the New World Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Species of the Amblyomma parasitize a wide range of organisms, especially medium and large terrestrial mammals. Here we report for the first time the association of Myotis lavali Moratelli, Peracchi, Dias & Oliveira, 2011, Noctilio albiventris Desmarest, 1818 and Noctilio leporinus (Linnaeus, 1758) as hosts for Amblyomma sculptum Berlese, 1888. The ticks were originally identified as Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius, 1787), in 2011. However, a later taxonomic review indicated that the species of the A. cajennense complex occurring in the Caatinga is A. sculptum. We also discuss the ecoepidemiological implications of this association.

Abstract Physiological levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important for intracellular and extracellular redox regulation in signaling and defense processes. Strenuous exercise can also contribute to this imbalance, and the muscle fatigue, evidenced by impaired strength or power generation, can be caused by various reasons, including oxidative stress. Antioxidants can prevent the formation of ROS by intercepting free radicals. Twenty judo athletes were included in this randomized, double-blind clinical trial into grape juice and placebo groups, and they consumed grape juice or placebo daily for 14 days in a crossover model. The outcomes were analyzed before and after combat simulations. The upper limb strength was higher in the grape juice group than in the placebo (p [group] = 0.003). The lipid damage levels were 10% higher in the placebo group (p [interaction] = 0.048). During the pre-exercise, the placebo group showed 19% more DNA damage than the grape juice group. The superoxide dismutase activity was 80% lower in the grape juice group (p [interaction] < 0.001). The consumption of grape juice can improve parameters of oxidative stress by reducing the lipid and DNA damage.
