RESUMO O presente trabalho teve por objetivo estudar o volume comercial e total por hectare, distribuição de frequência e qualidade da madeira da floresta do Campo de Instrução do Exército de Santa Maria, município de Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. Foram encontradas quarenta e oito espécies, onde os maiores volumes pertencem a Nectandra megapotamica, Patagonula americana e Ficus luschnathiana. A distribuição de frequências por classe diamétrica foi ajustada a Função de Meyer, sendo obtida Constante Regulativa (q) de 1,7238, normal para este tipo florestal. A qualidade média da madeira foi considerada boa. O volume comercial com casca foi de 148,6 m3/ha, correspondente a uma área basal de 28,8 m2/ha.

ABSTRACT The present work describes the volume per hectare, frequency and diameter distribution and quality of the wood, in ‘Campo de Instrução do Exército de Santa Maria’ (Army Instruction Field, in Portuguese), in the locality of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul state. Forty-eight species were found. The species Nectandra megapotamica, Patagonula americana and Ficus luschnathiana showed the highest volumes. The distribution of frequency for diameter class was adjusted by Meyer’s function, with a regulating constant (q) of 0,7238, normal for this type of forest. The average quality of the wood was considered good. The volume with bark was 148,6 m3/ha, corresponding to a basal area of 28,8 m2/ha.

RESUMO Em um inventário de 14 unidades amostrais, de 15 x 50 m (750 m2), realizado em uma Floresta Estacional Decidual, localizada no Morro do Centro de Instrução de Santa Maria, Distrito de Boca do Monte, em Santa Maria, RS, para o estudo da estrutura fitossociológica. Para tal, foram identificados e quantificados os indivíduos com circunferência a altura do peito (CAP) maior ou igual a 30 cm. Em cada amostra foram identificadas duas sub-amostras circulares concêntricas, para análise dos indivíduos em regeneração natural. Uma de 10 m2 (raio de 1,78 m) para as classes de 0 a 15 cm e outra de 100 m2 (raio de 5,64 m) para as classes de 15,1 a 30 cm de circunferência. Identificaram-se 51 espécies vegetais, distribuídas em 45 gêneros e 26 famílias botânicas. As espécies Cupania vernalis, Trichilia clausseni, Nectandra magapotamica, Myrcianthes pungens e Mataybae laeagnoides estão entre as mais características e importantes da associação, tanto em relação a estrutura vertical como horizontal.

ABSTRACT In one inventory of fourteen sample units of 15 x 30 m (750 m2) performed in a portion of the Decidual Seasonal Forest, located on the top of the Army Instruction Center of ‘Boca do Monte’, district of Santa Maria, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, carried out a study about phytosociological structure. To do so, the individuals with circumference at breast height (CAP) bigger or equal than 30 cm were identified and quantified. In each sample, two circular and concentric subsamples were identified for an analysis of the individuals in natural regeneration process, one subsample of 10 m2 with a radius of 1,78 m for the circumference classes from 0 to 15 cm and the other one of 100 m2 with a radius of 5,64 m for the circumference classes from 15,1 to 30 cm. There are 51 vegetable species distributed in 45 classes and 26 botanical families which were identified. Cupania vernalis, Trichilia clausseni, Nectandra magapotamica, Myrcianthes pungens and Mataybae laeagnoides are among the most important and characteristic species from the association, in relation either with the vertical or the horizon structure, creating the typical physionomy of this forest.

RESUMO Estudos anteriores demonstraram uma considerável contaminação de pastagens da região carboelétrica de Candiota - RS. Neste trabalho, 21 espécies de pastagens nativas desta região foram identificadas e analisadas quanto a seus teores de flúor. A determinação deste elemento foi feita por meio da técnica de eletrodo íon-seletivo em soluções resultantes da decomposição de amostras de pastagens com mistura HNO3 + H2O2. Amostras coletadas em três pontos das vizinhanças da usina termoelétrica (UTPM) acusaram valores entre 2,17 e 15,18 ppm de F-. A concentração de flúor nas pastagens de Candiota é superior à das amostras de referência. A diferenciada capacidade de absorção e de retenção deste elemento pelas espécies estudadas fica evidenciada pela variabilidade dos níveis de concentração medidos.

ABSTRACT Previous studies showed that native pasture in the “coal energetic” region of Candiota, RS state/Brazil was considerably contaminated by fluorine. In this work 21 different species of native pasture plants were identificated and their fluorine concentrations evaluated. The determinations were performed by ion-selective electrode technique into the resulting solutions of pasture sample decomposition with a H2O2 + HNO3 mixture. Pasture samples collected at three different sites from the vicinity of the coal-fired power plant (UTPM) showed values between 2.17 and 15.18 ppm of F-. The fluorine concentrations of the pastures from Candiota were higher than the measured levels in reference samples. The different absorption and retention ability of this element by the studied species is evidenced by the variability of measured concentration levels.
