ABSTRACT Introduction: Phenolic compounds are a large group of molecules present in plants with a diversity of chemical structures and biological activity. The objective of this study was to quantify the intake of phenolic compounds of the Spanish population. Material and Methods: The most consumed foods from vegetal origin in Spain were selected. These were picked up in the National Survey of Spanish Dietary Intake (ENIDE) of 2011, edited by AESAN (Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition) as a basis for quantifying the intake of phenolic compounds of Spaniards using the Phenol-Explorer database. Results: This database has allowed to estimate the average intake of polyphenols per day of Spaniards, which is 1365.1mg. Conclusions: The average intake of total polyphenols of Spaniards could have a protective effect against the mortality rate and exercise a preventive function on some chronic diseases along with other healthy lifestyle habits.

RESUMEN Introducción: Los compuestos fenólicos son un amplio grupo de moléculas presentes en los vegetales con diversidad de estructuras químicas y actividad biológica. El objetivo de este estudio fue cuantificar la ingesta de compuestos fenólicos de los españoles. Material y Métodos: Se seleccionaron los alimentos de origen vegetal más consumidos en España, recogidos en la Encuesta Nacional de Ingesta Dietética Española (ENIDE) del año 2011, editada por AESAN (Agencia Española de Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutrición) como base para cuantificar la ingesta de compuestos fenólicos de los españoles usando la base de datos Phenol-Explorer. Resultados: Esta base de datos ha permitido estimar la ingesta media de polifenoles por día de los españoles que es de 1365,1mg. Conclusiones: La ingesta media de polifenoles totales de los españoles podría tener un efecto protector frente a la tasa de mortalidad y ejercer una función preventiva sobre algunas enfermedades crónicas junto con otros hábitos de vida saludable.

To have a better understanding on the role of the press in the communication of gender and health issues, the content of the five most spread newspapers in Spain was studied (El País, ABC, El Mundo, La Vanguardia and El Periódico de Catalunya) for five years (1997-2001) and the electronic version of The New York Times of the period 1990-1999. An unequal distribution was observed in the responsibility as for the information related to three aspects: positions of responsibility in the newspapers (out of 71 main posts, 67 were men and 4 women); the authors of the articles on health issues (61.2% men and 38,8% women, among the articles that include the author) and the mentioned information sources (81.43% men and 17.77% women). Among the 120 health issues that were covered during the period of the study, only 20 explicitly mentioned a woman (16.67%). Those subjects that included more frequently explicit references were: ablation, iatrogenics, sterilization, sexual and reproductive health, incontinence, beauty and domestic violence. The analysis of the approach to these subjects helped to identify the stereotypes of gender inequality, in the language as well as in the approach.

Para alcanzar una mayor comprensión del papel de la prensa en la transmisión de las cuestiones de género y salud se estudió el contenido de los 5 diarios de mayor difusión en el territorio español (El País, ABC, El Mundo, La Vanguardia y El Periódico de Catalunya) durante 5 años (1997-2001) y de la versión electrónica de The New York Times correspondiente al período 1900-1999. Se observó que existe una distribución desigual en la responsabilidad sobre la información en 3 aspectos: la distribución de los cargos de responsabilidad de los diarios (de los 71 principales cargos, 67 eran hombres y 4 mujeres); los autores de los textos periodísticos sobre cuestiones de salud (el 61,2%, hombres y el 38,8%, mujeres, entre los textos que explicitaban la autoría) y las fuentes de información mencionadas (el 81,43%, hombres y el 17,77%, mujeres). Entre los 120 temas sanitarios que fueron cubiertos durante el período de estudio, sólo 20 mencionaron explícitamente a la mujer (16,67%). Los que incluyeron con mayor frecuencia referencias explícitas fueron: ablación, iatrogenia, esterilización, salud sexual y reproductiva, incontinencia, belleza y violencia doméstica. El análisis del tratamiento dado a estos temas permitió reconocer estereotipos de desigualdad de género, tanto en el lenguaje como en el enfoque utilizados.
