Abstract Pre-emergent herbicides can contribute to the control of weed competition in direct seeding restoration, however it is necessary to evaluate their effects on seeds of native tropical forest species. The aim of the study was to assess the potential impact of the herbicide indaziflam on the germination of 17 forest species. For this, a dosage of 180 mL of the product in 200L of water was compared to the control without herbicide. The degree of sensitivity of each species was calculated by a ratio between the percentage of germination with herbicide (GH) and the control without herbicide (GC) classifying them as: extremely sensitive (ES= (GH/GC) <0.25), sensitive (S=0.25< (GH/GC) <0.50), low sensitivity (LS=0.50< (GH/GC) <0.75), indifferent (I=0.75< (GH/GC) <1.0) and potentiated (P= (GH/GC) >1). The herbicide promoted a significant reduction in mean germination in 35% (n=6) of the species and 59% (n = 10) were sensitive or extremely sensitive to indaziflam, and only three did not germinate. On the other hand, 29.4% (n=5) showed low sensitivity or indifference to the herbicide, while seed germination was slightly increased by indaziflam to 11.7% (n=2). Pre-emergent indaziflam can be recommended in direct seeding restoration, as only 17.6% (n=3) of the species were inhibited by pre-emergent. However, the effect of indaziflam varies by species and requires further studies to support large-scale use in direct seeding.

Resumo Herbicidas pré-emergentes podem contribuir para o controle da competição de plantas daninhas em restauração por semeadura direta, porém é necessário entender seus efeitos em sementes de florestais nativas. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o potencial impacto do herbicida indaziflam na germinação de 17 espécies nativas de florestas tropicais. Para isso, uma dosagem ligeiramente acima da recomendada (180 mL do produto em 200 L de água) foi comparada com a testemunha sem herbicida. O grau de sensibilidade de cada espécie, foi calculado pela razão entre a porcentagem de germinação com herbicida (GH) e a testemunha sem herbicida (GC) e classificando-as como: extremamente sensível (ES= (GH/GC) <0,25), sensível (S=0,25< (GH/GC) <0,50), baixa sensibilidade (LS=0,50< (GH/GC) <0,75), indiferente - I=0,75< (GH/GC) <1,0) e potencializado (P= (GH/GC) >1). O herbicida promoveu redução significativa na média de germinação em mais de 35% (n=6) das espécies avaliadas e 59% (n=10) foram sensíveis ou extremamente sensíveis ao indaziflam e apenas três espécies não germinaram. Por outro lado, 29,4% (n=5) apresentaram baixa sensibilidade ou indiferença ao herbicida, enquanto a germinação das sementes foi levemente aumentada pelo indaziflam para 11,7% (n=2). O indaziflam pré-emergente pode ser recomendado na restauração de semeadura direta pois apenas 17,6% (n=3). The formation of a stable and adherent oxide layer on the Ti-6Al-4V alloy can improve the mechanical and corrosion resistance of this material. This work studied the creep behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy after two different thermal oxidation conditions: at 650 °C for 12 h and at 800 °C for 2 h. In the XRD analysis of the oxidized samples, it was possible to observe the formation of rutile (TiO2) and a displacement of the peaks of α and β phases caused by the dissolution of oxygen. In the creep test at 550 °C, the material oxidized at 800 °C for 2 h showed a greater creep life at 125 MPa, the crack took longer to brake probably due to the greater thickness of the layer. At 550°C and 187.5 MPa the material oxidized at 650 °C for 12h has a better creep life, probably due to the layer more adhered.

Abstract Due to the complex nature of pain and the participation of physical, cognitive, psychological and behavioral aspects, pain management has several approaches. The use of medicinal plants in developing countries is quite expressive. Seeking new options for the treatment of emerging or debilitating diseases. Therefore, the present study seeks to elucidate the effects of the monoterpene, citronellal, differentiating its activity by isomers (R)-(+) and (S)-(-) citronellal. The study used several methods to evaluate the effects of citronellal isomers on motor coordination, nociceptive response, and the involvement of opioid, glutamatergic, and transient receptor pathways. The methods included rota-rod, hot-plate, and formalin tests, as well as the use of specific inhibitors and agonists. Data were analyzed using inferential statistics with a 95% confidence level. Both isomers did not significantly affect the motor coordination of the studied animals. The isomer (S)-(-) citronellal showed better results in relation to its structural counterpart, managing to have an antinociceptive effect in the formalin and hot plate tests with a lower concentration (100 mg/kg) and presenting fewer side effects, however, the this study was not able to elucidate the mechanism of action of this isomer despite having activity in studies with substances that act on specific targets such as glutamate and capsaicin, its activity was not reversed with the use of antagonists for pathways related to nociception. While the (R)-(+) citronellal isomer, despite showing total activity only at a concentration of 150 mg/kg, was able to determine its mechanism of action related to the opioid pathway by reversing its activity by the antagonist naloxone, being this is a pathway already correlated with nociception control treatments, however, it is also related to some unwanted side effects. In this way, new studies are sought to elucidate the mechanism related to the isomer (S)-(-) citronellal and a possibility of use in other areas related to the treatment of pain or inflammation.

Resumo Devido à natureza complexa da dor e a sua participação de aspectos físicos, cognitivos, psicológicos e comportamentais, o manejo da dor possui diversas abordagens. O uso de plantas medicinais em países em desenvolvimento é bastante expressivo. Buscando novas opções para o tratamento de denças emergentes ou debilitantes. Portanto, o presente estudo busca elucidar os efeitos do monoterpeno, citronelal, diferenciando sua atividade pelos isômeros (R)-(+) e (S)-(-) citronelal. O estudo utilizou diversos métodos para avaliar os efeitos dos isômeros de citronelal na coordenação motora, resposta nociceptiva e o envolvimento de vias opioides, glutamatérgicas e de receptores transitórios. Os métodos incluíram testes de rota-rod, placa quente e formalina, além do uso de inibidores e agonistas específicos. Os dados foram analisados estatisticamente com um intervalo de confiança de 95%. Ambos os isomeros não afetaram significativamente a coordenação motora dos animais em estudo. O isômero (S)-(-) citronelal apresentou melhores resultados em relação ao seu homólogo estrutural, conseguindo ter um efeito antinociceptivo nos testes de formalina e placa quente com menor concentração (100 mg/kg) e apresentando menos efeitos colaterais, entretanto, o presente estudo não foi capaz de elucidar o mecanismo de ação deste isomero apesar de ter atividadade em estudos com substancias que agem em alvos específicos como glutamato e capsaicina, sua atividade não foi revertida com a utilização de antagonistas para as vias relacionadas à nocicepção. Enquanto o isômero (R)-(+) citronelal, apesar de apresentar de apresentar total atividade somente na concentração de 150 mg/kg, foi capaz de determinar seu mecanismo de ação relacionado à via opióide pela reversão da sua atividade pelo antagonista naloxona, sendo esta uma via já correlacionada com os tratamentos de controle da a nocicepção, no entanto, também está relacionada a alguns efeitos colaterais indesejados. Desta forma busca-se novos estudos para elucidação do mecanismo relacionados ao isomero (S)-(-) citronellal e uma possibilidade de utilização em outras areas relacionadas ao tratamento da dor ou inflamação.

Abstract Low density sugarcane plantation (LDSP) has been implemented by some sugarcane producers in Brazil, aiming to save seeds and operational costs. The study was carried out in the municipality of Areia, Paraíba, Brazil. Five planting densities were used, varying from 5 to 25 m-2 of buds arranged in randomized blocks, with four replications. Data were measured annually over three cultivation cycles (2017 to 2020), during which the field was fertilized with NPK and the harvests were carried out manually without prior burning. The lower planting density presents higher productivity only in the cane plant (101.03 t ha-1) due to the higher plant height (2.37 m) and the higher number of stalks (11 stalks m-2), suggesting that these variables are due to the greater availability of light, water and photosynthate. However, there is a drastic reduction in sugarcane yield for this lower population in the 2nd ratoon by up to 65.62%, which is correlated with number of stalks per meter. We demonstrate the agronomic viability of LDSP in the population of 10 buds m-2 in relation to conventional planting of sugarcane until the 2nd ratoon. Data are important for future studies to present additional considerations for other production factors, such as the effects of mechanized harvesting and the management of nutrients and water, assessing the sustainability of this large-scale planting system.

Resumo O método de plantio de cana-de-açúcar de baixa densidade (LDSP) vem sendo implementado por alguns produtores de cana-de-açúcar no Brasil, visando economia de sementes e custos operacionais. O estudo foi realizado no município de Areia, Paraíba, Brasil. Utilizou-se cinco densidades de plantio, variando de 5 a 25 m-2 de gemas dispostas em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os dados foram medidos anualmente ao longo de três ciclos de cultivo (2017 a 2020). Menor densidade de plantio mostrou maior produtividade (101,03 t ha-1) devido à maior altura de planta (2,37 m) e ao maior número de hastes (NS) (11 hastes m-2), sugerindo que essas variáveis são devido à maior disponibilidade de luz, água e fotoassimilados. No entanto, houve redução drástica na produtividade da cana-de-açúcar para esta população menor na 2ª soca em 65,62%, estando correlacionado com o número de colmos por metro. Demonstramos a viabilidade agronômica do LDSP em uma população de 10 gemas m-2 em relação ao plantio convencional de cana-de-açúcar até a 2ª soca. Os dados são importantes para que estudos futuros apresentem considerações adicionais sobre outros fatores de produção, como os efeitos da colheita mecanizada e do manejo de nutrientes e água, avaliando a sustentabilidade desse sistema de plantio em larga escala.

Abstract Ateleia glazioveana Baill. is a pioneer, rustic and can be used for forest recovery. This work aimed to study the process of physiological maturation of this species. The research was carried out in the city of Alegre - ES, the trees were identified in the floral anthesis and accompanied during the filling of the fruits and development of the seeds until the complete maturation. The fruits were harvested at the following stages 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 days after anthesis, and characterized according to: morphometry, moisture, fresh and dry mass of fruits and seeds, germination, germination speed index, shoot and root length and dry mass of seedlings. The regression equations were adjusted for the main characteristics analyzed as a function of the harvest period. The point of physiological maturity of timbó occurred at 42 days after anthesis.

Resumo A Ateleia glazioveana Baill. é pioneira, rústica e pode ser utilizada para recuperação florestal. Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar o processo de maturação fisiológica desta espécie. A pesquisa foi realizada na cidade de Alegre - ES, as árvores foram identificadas na antese floral e acompanhadas durante o enchimento dos frutos e desenvolvimento das sementes até a completa maturação. Os frutos foram colhidos nos seguintes estágios 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 e 42 dias após a antese, e caracterizados quanto à: morfometria, umidade, massa fresca e seca dos frutos e sementes, germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, comprimento da parte aérea e da raiz e massa seca das plântulas. As equações de regressão foram ajustadas para as principais características analisadas em função do período de colheita. O ponto de maturidade fisiológica do timbó ocorreu aos 42 dias após a antese.

Abstract Light and water availability can impact plant survival and growth, making ecophysiological studies crucial for understanding their tolerance and to single and combined stresses. The aimed of this study was to investigate the physiological and growth responses of Inga vera Willd. plants induced by different water regimes and light intensities. Three water regimes were implemented based on substrate water retention capacity (WRC) - 50%, 75%, and 100%, along with shading levels (SH) - 0% (full sun), 30%, and 70%. Evaluations were conducted at 25 and 50 days after applying the water regimes, and during a recovery period of 30 days when all treatments were maintained at 75% of WRC. Photochemical efficiency, gas exchange, chlorophylls indices, growth, quality of the seedlings and content proline amino acid were assessed. Overall, I. vera plants showed greater sensitivity to increased exposure to light than to low water availability. The interaction of SH + WRC was beneficial for the gas exchange and chlorophylls indices characteristics under SH 70% + WRC 75-100% at 25 and 50 days, with higher results, greater plant growth and higher proline contents for leaves and roots under SH 30% and 70% + WRC 50%, 75% and 100% at 25 and 50 days. There was no recovery effect for seedlings grown in full sun. The plants grown under shade during the recovery period maintained their values for most of the characteristics evaluated. SH 30% + WRC 75% contributed to an increase in photosynthetic metabolism and, as a result, to the quality of the seedlings.

Resumo A disponibilidade de luz e água pode afetar a sobrevivência e o crescimento das plantas, tornando os estudos ecofisiológicos cruciais para a compreensão de sua tolerância a estresses individuais e combinados. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar as respostas fisiológicas e de crescimento das plantas de Inga vera Willd. induzidas por diferentes regimes hídricos e de intensidades de luz. Foram implementados três regimes hídricos com base nos níveis de capacidade de retenção de água do substrato (CRA) - 50%, 75% e 100%, juntamente com níveis de sombreamento (SH) - 0% (pleno sol), 30% e 70%. As avaliações foram realizadas aos 25 e 50 dias após a aplicação dos regimes hídricos e durante um período de recuperação (REC) de 30 dias, quando todos os tratamentos foram mantidos em 75% da CRA. Foram avaliados a eficiência fotoquímica, as trocas gasosas, os índices de clorofila, o crescimento, a qualidade das mudas e o conteúdo do aminoácido prolina. De modo geral, as plantas de I. vera mostraram maior sensibilidade à exposição aumentada à luz do que à baixa disponibilidade de água. A interação de SH + WRC foi benéfica para as características de trocas gasosas e índices de clorofila sob SH 70% + WRC 75-100% aos 25 e 50 dias, com resultados mais altos, maior crescimento da planta e maiores teores de prolina para folhas e raízes sob SH 30% e 70% + WRC 50%, 75% e 100% aos 25 e 50 dias. Não houve efeito de recuperação para as mudas cultivadas a pleno sol. As plantas cultivadas sob sombra durante o período de recuperação mantiveram seus valores para a maioria das características avaliadas. O SH 30% + WRC 75% contribuiu para o aumento do metabolismo fotossintético, como resultado, melhor qualidade das mudas.

Resumo Vários estudos enfatizam o uso de pelotas de coruja em inventários de pequenos mamíferos em áreas naturais com elevada riqueza de espécies raras, mas poucas localidades da Mata Atlântica brasileira têm sido inventariadas por esse método. O presente estudo documenta a composição de espécies e abundância de pequenos mamíferos na dieta de Tyto furcata em uma área urbana do município de Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, discutindo a relevância de um novo registro de um raro marsupial do gênero Cryptonanus na Mata Atlântica. Foram analisadas 265 pelotas regurgitadas por um casal de T. furcata entre novembro de 2016 e setembro de 2017, encontradas abaixo de uma caixa de nidificação. A análise das amostras permitiu encontrar o total de 596 indivíduos de quatro espécies pequenas de mamíferos. O roedor exótico Mus musculus foi predominante entre os itens alimentares (98,3%), enquanto os roedores nativos Necromys lasiurus (1,3%) e Holochilus brasiliensis (0,17%) foram bem mais raros. Um único espécime de Cryptonanus sp. foi identificado entre os itens com base em caracteres dentários. A identificação desse gênero no presente estudo representa o segundo registro no estado do Rio de Janeiro e o sexto no bioma Mata Atlântica, sugerindo que este marsupial ocupa uma ampla faixa ecológica e biogeográfica. O presente estudo destaca a relevância dos pellets de coruja para pesquisas com pequenos mamíferos, mesmo em áreas urbanas e altamente perturbadas.

Abstract Several studies emphasize the use of owl pellets in small mammal inventories in natural areas harboring high richness of rare species, but few Brazilian Atlantic forest localities have been surveyed by this method. The present study documents the species composition and abundance of small mammals in the diet of Tyto furcata in an urban area of the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, remarking on a new record of the dwarf mouse opossum genus Cryptonanus in the Atlantic forest. We analyzed 265 pellets regurgitated by a pair of T. furcata from November 2016 to September 2017 found in a nesting box. Analysis of the samples enabled finding a total of 596 individuals of four small mammal species. Mus musculus was predominant among the prey items (98.3%), while the native rodents Necromys lasiurus (1.3%) and Holochilus brasiliensis (0,17%) were much rarer. A single specimen of Cryptonanus sp. was identified among the diet items based on distinctive dental characters. The identification of this genus in the present study represents the second record in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and the sixth in the Atlantic Forest biome, suggesting that this marsupial occupies a wider ecological and biogeographic range. The present study underscores the relevance of owl pellets for small mammal surveys, even in urban and highly disturbed areas.

Resumo Hymenaea martiana é uma espécie popularmente conhecida no Nordeste do Brasil como “jatobá” e usada na medicina popular para tratar a dor e a inflamação. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a atividade antinociceptiva e anti-inflamatória de H. martiana. No presente estudo, foram avaliados os efeitos do extrato etanólico bruto (Hm-EtOH) e da fração acetato de etila (Hm-AcOEt) em modelos de nocicepção e inflamação em camundongos. Foram utilizados estímulos químicos (contorções abdominais induzidas por ácido acético e teste da formalina) e estímulo térmico (teste da placa quente) para avaliação da atividade antinociceptiva, enquanto no perfil anti-inflamatório foi utilizado o teste do edema de pata induzido por carragenina e migração de leucócitos para a cavidade peritoneal. A presença do flavonoide astilbina nas amostras foi caracterizada através de análise por CLAE-DAD-EM. Hm-EtOH e o Hm-AcOEt (100, 200 e 400 mg.kg-1, i.p.) reduziram significativamente o número de contorções abdominais e diminuíram o tempo de lambida da pata no teste da formalina. No teste da placa quente, houve aumento do tempo de latência dos animais. Hm-EtOH e Hm-AcOEt inibiram significativamente o aumento do edema após a administração de carragenina, bem como inibiram a migração de leucócitos no teste de peritonite. A análise por CLAE-DAD-EM de Hm-EtOH e Hm-AcOEt revelou a presença do flavonoide astilbina nas amostras. De acordo com os resultados deste estudo, tanto Hm-EtOH quanto o Hm-AcOEt possuem atividades antinociceptiva e anti-inflamatória, o que pode estar relacionado à presença do flavonoide. Os resultados reforçam o uso popular desta planta.

Abstract Hymenaea martiana is a species popularly known in Northeastern Brazil as “jatobá” and used in folk medicine to treat pain and inflammation. The aim of this work was to evaluate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activity of H. martiana. In the present study, we carried out an investigation about the effects of the crude ethanolic extract (Hm-EtOH) and the ethyl acetate fraction (Hm-AcOEt) in models of nociception and inflammation in mice. Chemical (acetic acid-induced writhing and formalin) and thermal stimuli (hot plate) were used for the evaluation of antinociceptive activity, while for the anti-inflammatory profile paw edema induced by carrageenan was used, along with leukocyte migration to the peritoneal cavity. The presence of the flavonoid astilbin in the samples was characterized through HPLC-DAD-MS analysis. Hm-EtOH and Hm-AcOEt (100, 200 and 400 mg.kg-1, i.p.) significantly reduced the number of abdominal contortions and decreased the paw licking time in the formalin test. In the hot plate, the extract increased the latency time of animals. Hm-EtOH and Hm-AcOEt inhibited significantly the increase in the edema after the administration of carrageenan. Hm-EtOH and Hm-AcOEt inhibited leukocyte migration in the peritonitis test. HPLC-DAD-MS analysis of Hm-EtOH and Hm-AcOEt revealed the presence of the flavonoid astilbin in the samples. According to the results of this study, both Hm-EtOH and Hm-AcOEt have antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities, which could be related with the presence of flavonoid in the extracts. The results reinforce the popular use of this plant.

Resumo Caryocar brasiliense Camb. (Malpighiales: Caryocaraceae) é, amplamente, distribuída no cerrado brasileiro e seus frutos são utilizados para alimentação humana, produção de cosméticos, lubrificantes e na indústria farmacêutica, no entanto, é danificada por insetos galhadores. O número de insetos galhadores e seus parasitoides foram avaliados, em campo (galhas) e em laboratório (emergência de adultos das galhas), em três alturas do dossel de C. brasiliense, durante três anos. Os números de adultos Eurytoma sp. (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae), inseto galhador (galhas novas) e de Sycophila sp. (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae), parasitoide de Eurytoma sp., foram maiores na parte apical do dossel da copa de árvores de C. brasiliense. A quantidade de galhas globoides de Eurytoma sp., isoladas ou em grupo (galhas velhas), foi maior na parte mediana e basal da copa. Os números de adultos do galhador Eurytoma sp. e de seus parasitoides, que os seguem, foram maiores na parte apical da copa de árvores de C. brasiliense.

Abstract Caryocar brasiliense Camb. (Malpighiales: Caryocaraceae) is widely distributed in the Brazilian savanna and its fruits are used by humans for food, production of cosmetics, lubricants, and in the pharmaceutical industry. This plant is damaged by galling insects. Number of these galling insects and their parasitoids was recorded, in the field (galls) and in the laboratory (adults emerged from the galls), from three C. brasiliense crown heights, during three years. Numbers of adults of Eurytoma sp. (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae), galling insect (younger attack) and Sycophila sp. (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) (a parasitoid of Eurytoma sp.), were greater on the apical parts of C. brasiliense tree crowns. Numbers and groups of Eurytoma sp. globoid galls (older attack) were higher in the median and basal crown parts. The numbers of Eurytoma sp. galls were higher on apical part of C. brasiliense tree crown and also of their parasitoids.

Resumo A busca por compostos com efeitos anticâncer é de suma importância nos dias atuais devido à alta incidência desta doença. A família Euphorbiaceae é conhecida por possuir compostos com propriedades terapêuticas, sendo um de seus gêneros o Croton. Este possui diversas espécies, que contêm compostos já conhecidos por suas atividades biológicas, apresentando propriedades anti-inflamatórias, antimicrobianas e anticancerígenas. Assim, a citotoxicidade/atividade antiproliferativa de frações semipurificadas e compostos isolados de Croton echioides em células tumorais hepáticas de Rattus norvegicus (HTC) foi avaliada pelo teste MTT. As frações semipurificadas apresentaram citotoxicidade em concentrações acima de 200 µg/mL, em 24, 48 e 72 horas, atingindo viabilidade celular de 24,78% [400 µg/mL] em 24 horas, 12,79% [500 µg/mL] em 48 horas e 10,57% [300 µg/mL] às 72 horas. Para os compostos isolados, o lupeol teve efeito citotóxico em todas as concentrações (1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, 60, 80 e 100 µg/mL) e tempos testados (24, 48 e 72 horas), atingindo a viabilidade mínima de 4,37% [100 µg/mL], em 72 horas. Os diterpenos clerodan CEH-1 e CEH-4 também apresentaram atividade antiproliferativa, com viabilidade mínima de 36,19% [100 µg/mL] em 72 horas e 21,33% [100 µg/mL] em 48 horas, respectivamente. No entanto, os diterpenos clerodanos CEH-2 e CEH-3 não apresentaram efeito citotóxico para células HTC. Assim, existe um potencial citotóxico/antiproliferativo de C. echioides contra células tumorais, com enzimas direcionadas a enzimas mitocondriais, associadas à proliferação celular, indicando que esta espécie merece destaque na busca de novas moléculas para o tratamento do câncer.

Abstract The search for compounds with anticancer effects is of paramount importance today due to the high incidence of the disease. The Euphorbiaceae family is known for having compounds with therapeutic properties, one of its genera being Croton. It has several species, which contain compounds already known for their biological activities, presenting anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer properties. Thus, the cytotoxicity/antiproliferative activity of semi-purified fractions and compounds isolated from Croton echioides in liver tumor cells of Rattus norvegicus (HTC) was evaluated by the MTT test. The semi-purified fractions showed cytotoxicity at concentrations above 200 µg/mL, at 24, 48 and 72 hours, reaching cell viability of 24.78% [400 µg/mL] at 24 hours, 12.79% [500 µg/mL] at 48 hours and 10.57% [300 µg/mL] at 72 hours. For the isolated compounds, lupeol had a cytotoxic effect in all concentrations (1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 µg/mL) and tested times (24, 48 and 72 hours), reaching minimum viability of 4.37% [100 µg/mL], within 72 hours. The clerodan diterpenes CEH-1 and CEH-4 also showed antiproliferative activity, with minimum viability of 36.19% [100 µg/mL] over 72 hours and 21.33% [100 µg/mL] over 48 hours, respectively. However, the clerodan diterpenes CEH-2 and CEH-3 did not shows a cytotoxic effect for HTC cells. Thus, there is a cytotoxic/antiproliferative potential of C. echioides against tumor cells, with targeted to mitochondrial enzymes, associated with cell proliferation, indicating that this species deserves prominence in the search for new molecules for the treatment of cancer.

Abstract Diaphorina citri detected in Ecuador for the first time in 2013, is an insect pest of global relevance. It is the main vector of the phloem-limited bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, the causal agent of Huanglongbing (HLB), a devastating disease of citrus trees. During the period from April 2016 - July 2017, population fluctuation studies and a search for natural enemies of D. citri were conducted on young shoots of orange jessamine, Murraya paniculata, and Citrus spp. The natural enemies of D. citri were collected in the Provinces of Guayas and Santa Elena, Ecuador. A total of 1660 specimens of predators belonging to five species were collected, consisting of three coccinellids, Cheilomenes sexmaculata, the most abundant species (39.9%, P <0.05), followed by Cycloneda sanguinea (15.8%), and Paraneda pallidula guticollis (4.1%) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), an assassin bug, Zelus sp. (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) (17.8%), and the lacewing Ceraeochrysa sp. (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) (22.4%). The parasitoid wasp Tamarixia radiata also was found, reaching a parasitization rate of 90% of the psyllid nymphs. This study represents the first report of P. pallidula guticollis feeding on D. citri. The diversity of natural enemies and the high level of parasitism detected suggest the importance of natural enemies as biological control agents of this important phytophagous insect pest. The natural control by these beneficial insects would make unnecessary the applications of chemical insecticides that are carried out in Ecuador for the control of this insect, especially at this moment when the HLB causing bacterium has not been reported in Ecuador.

Resumen Diaphorina citri, especie detectada en Ecuador por primera vez en 2013, es una plaga de relevancia mundial debido a que es el principal vector de la bacteria Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, agente causal del Huanglongbing (HLB), una devastadora enfermedad de los cítricos. Durante el período abril 2016 – julio 2017, se realizaron estudios de fluctuación poblacional e inventario de enemigos naturales de D. citri en brotes jóvenes de azahar de la India, Murraya paniculata y citricos, Citrus spp. Los enemigos naturales fueron colectados en las provincias de Guayas y Santa Elena, Ecuador. Se colectaron un total de 1660 especímenes pertenecientes a cinco especies, entre estos, tres coccinélidos, Cheilomenes sexmaculata, la especie más abundante (39,9%, P<0,05), seguido por Cycloneda sanguinea (15,8%) y Paraneda pallidula guticollis 4,1% (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), una chinche depredadora, Zelus sp. (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) (17,8%) y la crisopa Ceraeochrysa sp. (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) (22,4%). La avispita parasítica Tamarixia radiata también fue encontrada, alcanzando un porcentaje de parasitismo del 90% en las ninfas de psílido. Este estudio representa el primer reporte de P. pallidula guticollis alimentándose de D. citri. La diversidad de enemigos naturales y el alto nivel de parasitismo detectado sugieren la importancia de los enemigos naturales como agentes de control biológico de esta importante plaga. El control natural existente haría innecesarias las aplicaciones de insecticidas químicos que se llevan a cabo en el Ecuador para el control de este insecto, especialmente en este momento que el HLB no se ha encontrado en Ecuador.

An automated microsystem for sulfite determination in beverages was developed. It presents higher sampling throughput, lower chemical consumption and less waste generation than previous flow methods, while using the same p-rosaniline-formaldehyde-sulfite reaction. The sampling rate, limit of detection (LOD), and relative standard deviation (RSD) were estimated at 130 h-1, 80.0 µg L–1, and < 1.3% (n = 5), respectively. Recoveries ranged from 96.8 to 102.6%.

Resumo Foram analisados os nematóides em Iguana iguana, um grande lagarto Iguanidae que possui ampla distribuição pelas Américas. Os objetivos do estudo foram investigar os helmintos associados ao lagarto I. iguana e seus índices parasitológicos (prevalência e intensidade média de infecção). Foram examinados 18 espécimes (oito machos e 10 fêmeas). A prevalência total foi de 66,6% (12/18), nos machos foi de 75% (6/8) e nas fêmeas 60% (6/10). Iguana iguana foi identificado como um novo hospedeiro para Physaloptera sp., Atractis sp., Piratuba sp., e Subulura sp. Este registro contribui para o conhecimento da diversidade de helmintos associados a este hospedeiro.

Abstract Nematodes were analyzed in Iguana iguana, a large lizard Iguanidae that is widely distributed throughout the Americas. The aims of the study were investigate the helminths associated with the lizard, I. iguana in semi-arid areas of northeastern Brazil and analyze the parasitological indices (prevalence, and mean intensity of infection). A total of 18 specimens of I. iguana were examined (8 males and 10 females). The overall prevalence of infection was 66.6% (12/18), while in males, it was 75% (6/8) and in females, 60% (6/10). Iguana iguana was identified as a new host for Physaloptera sp., Atractis sp., Piratuba sp. and Subulura sp. This registered contributes to the knowledge of helminth diversity associated with this host.
