Resumo Os metais e agroquímicos estão entre os principais contaminantes aquáticos, podendo desencadear estresse oxidativo em organismos expostos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar uma possível correlação entre o nível de biomarcadores de estresse oxidativo em Aegla (Crustacea, Anomura) com (i) o conjunto de metais presentes no sedimento e (ii) com os usos da terra, em três bacias hidrográficas distintas. O estudo foi realizado em riachos (≤ 2ª ordem) de bacias hidrográficas do Sul do Brasil (Bacias do Rio Suzana, do Rio Ligeirinho-Leãozinho e do Rio Dourado), as quais foram caracterizadas em função do percentual de usos da terra e do nível de Cu, Cr, Cd, Fe, Mn e Zn no sedimento. As enzimas Catalase (CAT) e Glutationa Redutase (GR), bem como o nível de peroxidação lipídica das membranas (TBARS), foram analisadas em fêmeas adultas. Uma análise de PCA mostrou que a distribuição de metais foi distinta entre as bacias. Cd, Cr e Fe no sedimento correlacionaram positivamente com a CAT e negativamente com TBARS e GR. Entretanto, a bacia do Dourado apresentou os menores níveis destes três metais e os maiores níveis de TBARS, o que pode ser justificado pelo predomínio da agricultura nesta bacia, já que o TBARS correlacionou positivamente com o percentual de uso agrícola. Nesta bacia, a atividade da GR foi mais alta do que nas outras, indicando uma resposta compensatória em relação a inibição da CAT. As bacias do rio Suzana e rio Ligeirinho-Leãozinho apresentaram valores menores de TBARS, o que pode decorrer da indução da CAT em função dos metais acumulados no sedimento. Em síntese, este trabalho indica que nas bacias com maior concentração de metais tóxicos ocorre uma resposta adaptativa de indução da CAT, o que reduz os níveis de TBARS em Aegla. Por outro lado, na bacia com menor contaminação metálica os níveis de TBARS foram primariamente influenciados pelo uso agrícola.

Abstract Metals and agrochemicals are among the main aquatic contaminants, being able to trigger oxidative stress in exposed organisms. The objective of this work was to evaluate the correlation between the level of oxidative stress biomarkers in Aegla crabs (Crustacea, Anomura) with (i) the set of metals present in the streams sediment and (ii) with land uses of three hydrographic basins. The study was carried out in streams (≤ 2nd order) of hydrographic basins in southern Brazil (Basins of Rio Suzana, Rio Ligeirinho-Leãozinho and Rio Dourado). In these streams were quantified the land uses and Cu, Cr, Cd, Fe, Mn and Zn concentrations in the sediment. The enzymes Catalase (CAT) and Glutathione Reductase (GR), as well as the level of membrane lipid peroxidation (TBARS), were analyzed in adult females. The PCA analysis showed that the distribution of metals was different between the basins. Cd, Cr and Fe were correlated positively with CAT and negatively with TBARS and GR. The Dourado basin had the lowest concentrations of these three metals and the highest levels of TBARS. However, in Dourado basin there is predominance of agriculture land use, and TBARS was positively correlated with agricultural land use. Besides in Dourado basin, GR activity was higher than in the others basins, indicating a compensatory response in relation to CAT inhibition. The basins of Suzana and Ligeirinho-Leãozinho rivers had lower TBARS values, which may be due to the induction of CAT in response to metals accumulated in sediment. In summary, this work indicates that in the basins with a higher concentration of toxic metals there is an adaptive response of CAT induction, which reduces TBARS in Aegla. On the other hand, in the basin with lower metallic contamination, TBARS occurrence was primarily influenced by agricultural land use.

Na Lagoa Imboassica, localizada em Macaé, RJ, Brasil (22º24'S e 42º42'W), foram identificadas duas espécies de macroalgas do gênero Chara (C. angolensis e C. fibrosa), apresentando ampla distribuição. A lagoa recebe vários impactos antrópicos, e o lançamento de esgoto não tratado é um dos mais importantes. A biomassa variou entre 172 e 510 gDW.m-2 em diferentes áreas da lagoa. A concentração de nutrientes apresentou ampla variação, com os valores de carbono entre 325 e 392 mg.g-1DW, nitrogênio entre 14 e 27 mg.g-1DW e fósforo entre 0,45 e 0,85 mg.g-1DW, assim as taxas C:N:P apresentaram variação de 387:24:1 a 872:47:1. Os valores mínimo e máximo de energia na biomassa foram, respectivamente, 9,54 e 12,34 kJ.g-1DW. Há tendência de as menores taxas C:N:P ocorrerem em áreas mais eutrofizadas. Considerando os valores de biomassa e a concentração de nutrientes na biomassa, os maiores estoques de nutrientes estão associados aos bancos de Carófitas em áreas mais oligotróficas. A correlação de Spearman entre a concentração de nutrientes na coluna de água e a biomassa foi r s = 0,45 (p < 0,05) para o nitrogênio e r s = 0,50 (p < 0,01) para o fósforo (n = 30). A grande biomassa associada à concentração de nutrientes e os valores energéticos indicam que as carófitas são um importante compartimento biológico na estrutura e metabolismo da lagoa.

In the Imboassica Lagoon (22º24'S and 42º42'W) (Macaé, RJ, Brazil), two species of macroalgae of the genus Chara (C. angolensis and C. fibrosa) registered in large areas were identified. The lagoon is subject to several relevant anthropic impacts, of which untreated sewage is one of the most important. Results of the biomass distribution as analyzed in different areas of the lagoon showed values ranging from 172 to 510 gDW.m-2. As for the nutrient concentration, the results presented large fluctuations, with carbon values ranging from 325 to 392 mg.g-1DW, those of nitrogen, from 14 to 27 mg.g-1DW, and of phosphorus from 0.45 to 0.85 mg.g-1DW. This led to large fluctuations of the C:N:P ratio (from 387:24:1 to 872:47:1). The minimum and maximum energetic values of the biomass were 9.54 e 12.34 kJ.g-1DW. Smaller C:N:P ratios tended to occur in more eutrophic areas. The association between biomass and nutrient concentration showed that the highest quantities in the beds are found in oligotrophic areas. The Spearman correlation between nutrient concentration in the water column and biomass was r s = 0.45 (p < 0.05) for nitrogen and r s = 0.50 (p < 0.01) for phosphorus (n = 30). The large total biomass associated with nutrient concentration and energy content indicates that Charophytes are an important biological compartment in the structure and metabolism of the lagoon.

A região norte do estado do Rio de Janeiro abriga uma série de lagoas costeiras, localizadas, em sua maioria, na região da restinga que se estende do município de Macaé ao município de Quissamã. Durante 1995 e 1996 foram realizadas coletas com o objetivo de verificar a diversidade e densidade de larvas de Natantia nas lagoas Imboassica, Cabiúnas e Comprida. As coletas mensais foram realizadas com rede de 500 µ em arrastos horizontais com barco. Na lagoa Comprida não foram encontradas larvas de nenhuma família destes crustáceos. Na lagoa Cabiúnas, o outono foi a estação do ano com maior abundância relativa, sendo as larvas pertencentes a um único gênero: Macrobrachium. Na lagoa Imboassica foram realizadas coletas em duas situações em relação à variação do nível d'água e contato com o mar: arrastos horizontais de barco com a barra (faixa de areia que separa a lagoa do mar) fechada, sendo encontradas larvas de Macrobrachium sp, não se encontrando diferença em relação à estação do ano, e arrastos horizontais manuais, com barra fechada e aberta, na região próxima à barra da lagoa. Com a barra aberta, foram coletadas larvas e pós-larvas de Penaeus paulensis e P. brasiliensis, sendo as maiores abundâncias registradas nos meses de abril/96 e maio/95.

The northern part of the state of Rio de Janeiro shelters many coastal lagoons, located, mostly, in the "restinga" strip that stretches from the municipality of Macaé to the municipality of Quissamã. During 1995 and 1996 samplings were made aiming to verify the diversity and density of Natantia larvae in the Imboassica, Cabiúnas and Comprida lagoons. The monthly samples were taken with a 500 µ net, in horizontal drags from a boat. In Comprida lagoon no larvae of any family of these crustaceans were found. In Cabiúnas lagoon, the autumn was the season of the year with greatest relative abundance, the larvae belonging to only one genus: Macrobrachium. In Imboassica Lagoon samples were taken in two situations related to the variation of the water level and contact with sea water: horizontal boat dragging when the sandbar (the strip of sand that separates the lagoon from the sea) was closed, larvae of Macrobrachium sp. being found, and no seasonal variation being detected, and horizontal manual dragging with open and closed sandbar conditions, in a region close to the sandbar. With the sandbar open, larvae and post-larvae of Penaeus paulensis and P. brasiliensis were found, the greatest abundances being found in the months of April/96 and May/95.
