Resumo O presente estudo comparou os efeitos do uso de exercício aeróbio contínuo e intervalado durante o treinamento concorrente nas adaptações cardiorrespiratórias de mulheres. Trinta e duas participantes foram randomizadas em três grupos de treinamento: corrida contínua + treinamento resistido (C-RUN, n = 10), corrida intervalada + treinamento resistido (I-RUN, n = 11), e apenas treinamento resistido (RT, n = 11). Cada grupo treinou 2 vezes por semana ao longo de 11 semanas. Foi avaliado o consumo de oxigênio correspondente ao primeiro (VO2VT1) e segundo (VO2VT2) limiar ventilatório, bem como o consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2max) antes e depois dos treinamentos. Foram encontrados aumentos significativos no VO2VT1, VO2VT2 e VO2max ao final do período de treinamento nos três grupos. Ainda, foi encontrada interação tempo*grupo nas variáveis VO2VT2 e VO2max , sugerindo que a magnitude de alteração foi dependente do tipo de treinamento realizado (VO2VT2: C-Run = 6,6%, I-Run = 15,7%, RT = 1,7%; VO2max: C-Run = 7,2%, I-Run = 14,3%, RT = 2,7%). Da mesma forma, diferentes tamanhos de efeito foram observados ao final do treinamento, de acordo com a intervenção realizada (C-RUN versus RT d = 0,566 para o VO2VT2 e d = 0,442 para o VO2max; I-RUN versus RT d = 0,949 para o VO2VT2 e d = 1,189 para o VO2max). Embora o uso de exercício aeróbio contínuo e intervalado durante o treinamento concorrente tenha sido efetivo em promover adaptações cardiorrespiratórias em mulheres, os ganhos obtidos foram maiores quando o exercício intervalado foi associado ao exercício resistido.

Abstract This study compared the effects of using continuous and interval aerobic exercise during concurrent training on cardiorespiratory adaptations in women. Thirty-two participants were randomly assigned into one of the following groups: continuous running and resistance training (C-RUN, n = 10), interval running and resistance training (I-RUN, n = 11), or control group that performed resistance training only (RT, n = 11). Each group trained twice a week during 11 weeks. Oxygen uptake corresponding to the first ventilatory threshold (VO2VT1), second ventilatory threshold (VO2VT2) and maximal effort (VO2max) was measured in a maximal incremental test performed before and after training. Significant increases in VO2VT1, VO2VT2 and VO2max were observed in all training groups. VO2VT2 and VO2max presented time-group interactions, indicating that the magnitude of the increase in these variables was dependent on the training group (VO2VT2: C-Run = 6.6%, I-Run = 15.7%, RT = 1.7%; VO2max: C-Run = 7.2%, I-Run = 14.3%, RT = 2.7%). The effect size observed for post-training values comparing C-RUN and RT groups was d = 0.566 for VO2VT2 and d = 0.442 for VO2max. On the other hand, values of d = 0.949 for VO2VT2 and d = 1.189 for VO2max were verified between I-RUN and RT groups. In conclusion, the use of continuous and interval aerobic exercise during concurrent training improved different cardiorespiratory parameters in women, but in a greater magnitude when interval aerobic exercise was performed simultaneously to resistance training.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the acute effects of a session of water-based aerobic exercise on the blood lipid levels of women with dyslipidemia and to compare these results according to their training status. METHOD: Fourteen premenopausal women with dyslipidemia, aged 40–50 years, participated in two water-based aerobic exercise sessions, the first when they were generally sedentary and the second after they were trained with a water-based aerobic training program for 12 weeks. Both experimental sessions were performed using the same protocol, lasted 45 min, and incorporated an interval method, alternating 3 min at a rating of perceived exertion (RPE) of 13 and 2 min at an RPE of 9. Total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and lipoprotein lipase enzyme (LPL) were obtained through venous blood collection before and immediately after each session. A generalized estimating equation method and Bonferroni tests were conducted (with time and training status as factors) for statistical analyses. RESULTS: At enrollment, the mean age of the participants was 46.57 years (95% confidence interval [CI] 44.81−48.34). The statistical analyses showed a significant time effect for all variables (TC: p=0.008; TG: p=0.012; HDL: p<0.001; LPL: p<0.001) except for LDL (p=0.307). However, the training status effect was not significant for any variable (TC: p=0.527; TG: p=0.899; HDL: p=0.938; LDL: p=0.522; LPL: p=0.737). These results indicate that the TC and TG levels reduced and the HDL and LPL concentrations increased from pre- to post-session in similar magnitudes in both sedentary and trained women. CONCLUSIONS: A single water-based aerobic exercise session is sufficient and effective to beneficially modify the lipid profile of women with dyslipidemia, regardless of their training status.

Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar o equilíbrio dinâmico em praticantes experientes e iniciantes de Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) e grupo controle. A amostra do presente estudo foi composta por 34 participantes, com idades entre 20 e 42 anos, divididos em três grupos: 10 praticantes de BJJ Experientes, 12 praticantes de BJJ Iniciantes e 12 não praticantes de BJJ que compuseram o grupo controle. A tarefa do protocolo consistiu na busca do equilíbrio sobre um estabilômetro, com o objetivo de manter a plataforma o mais perto possível da posição horizontal (ângulo de 0 a 3º de desvio máximo) durante cada tentativa de 90 segundos. Os resultados demonstram diferenças significativas entre os grupos [F(2,31) = 30,24; p < 0,001]. Através dos testes de "post-hoc" foram detectadas diferenças entre o grupo Experientes (46 ± 14 s) e os outros dois grupos, Iniciantes (25 ± 6 s, p < 0,001) e Grupo Controle (19 ± 4 s, p < 0,001). Todavia, não foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre os Grupo Controle e Iniciantes (p = 0,421). Os resultados sugerem que o tempo de prática de BJJ pode influenciar no desempenho do controle do equilíbrio.

Abstract The aim of the present study was to analyze the dynamic balance in experienced and beginners practitioners of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and control group. The sample was composed by 34 participants with ages ranging between 20 and 42 years old, divided into three groups: 10 experienced BJJ practitioners, 12 beginners BJJ practitioners and 12 non-practitioners of BJJ that composed the control group. The task of the protocol consisted on the search for balance over a stabilometer, aiming at keeping the platform as close as possible of the horizontal position during each attempt. The results show significant differences among the groups [F(2.31) = 30,24; p < 0.001]. The post-hoc test revealed differences among the experienced BJJ group (46 ± 14 s) and the other groups (Beginners BJJ: 25 ± 6 s, p < 0.001; Control group: 19 ± 4 s, p < 0.001). However, no significant differences were found between control and beginners BJJ groups (p = 0.421). The results suggest that the time of BJJ practice may influence on the balance control performance.

Os exercícios aquáticos proporcionam inúmeros benefícios à saúde de seus praticantes. Para assegurar esses benefícios, é indispensável uma prescrição adequada às necessidades de cada indivíduo e, para isso, faz-se importante estudar as diferentes respostas cardiorrespiratórias das atividades desenvolvidas nesse meio. Deste modo, o objetivo do estudo foi comparar as respostas cardiorrespiratórias no limiar anaeróbio (LAn) entre o teste máximo de corrida em piscina funda (CPF) e da corrida em esteira terrestre (CET). Além disso, comparar dois métodos de determinação do LAn (ponto de deflexão da frequência cardíaca [PDFC] e método ventilatório [MV]) entre os protocolos máximos. Doze mulheres jovens participaram do estudo. Foi utilizada ANOVA de dois fatores para medidas repetidas com post-hoc de Bonferroni (α<0,05). Foram encontrados valores significativamente maiores de frequência cardíaca máxima (CET: 190±5; CPF: 174±9 bpm) e de consumo de oxigênio máximo (CET: 33,7±3,9; CPF: 22.5±4.1 ml.kg-1.min-1) na CET em comparação à CPF. Além disso, não foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre os métodos de determinação do LAn (CET: MT: 28.1±5.3; PDFC: 26.6±5.5 ml.kg-1.min-1; CPF: MV: 18.7±4.8, PDFC: 17.8±4.8 ml.kg-1.min-1). Os resultados indicam a importância da realização de um teste máximo especifico da modalidade treinada e o PDFC parece ser uma alternativa simples e prática para a determinação do LAn

Aquatic exercises provide numerous benefits to the health of their practitioners. To secure these benefits, it is essential to have proper prescriptions to the needs of each individual and, therefore, it is important to study the cardiorespiratory responses of different activities in this environment. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the cardiorespiratory responses at the anaerobic threshold (AT) between maximal deep-water running (DWR) and maximal treadmill running (TMR). In addition, two methods of determining the AT (the heart rate deflection point [HRDP] and ventilatory method [VM]) are compared in the two evaluated protocols. Twelve young women performed the two maximal protocols. Two-factor ANOVA for repeated measures with a post-hoc Bonferroni test was used (α < 0.05). Significantly higher values of maximal heart rate (TMR: 33.7 ± 3.9; DWR: 22.5 ± 4.1 ml.kg−1.min−1) and maximal oxygen uptake (TMR: 33.7 ± 3.9; DWR: 22.5 ± 4.1 ml.kg−1.min−1) in TMR compared to the DWR were found. Furthermore, no significant differences were found between the methods for determining the AT (TMR: VM: 28.1 ± 5.3, HRDP: 26.6 ± 5.5 ml.kg−1.min−1; DWR: VM: 18.7 ± 4.8, HRDP: 17.8 ± 4.8 ml.kg−1.min−1). The results indicate that a specific maximal test for the trained modality should be conducted and the HRDP can be used as a simple and practical method of determining the AT, based on which the training intensity can be determined

O objetivo do estudo foi correlacionar o consumo de oxigênio (VO2) e o percentual do VO2 máximo (%VO2máx) com o índice de esforço percebido (IEP) e comparar essas variáveis entre exercícios de hidroginástica executados no meio aquático em diferentes ritmos de execução. Seis mulheres realizaram quatro sessões de testes, uma no meio terrestre (teste de esforço máximo) e três no meio aquático, cada uma com a execução de um exercício de hidroginástica: corrida estacionária, deslize lateral e chute frontal até 45°. Cada exercício aquático foi realizado em três ritmos de execução, 80, 100 e 120bpm, durante 6 min (intervalo de 30 min). Para todas as variáveis, não foram observadas diferenças significativas entre os três exercícios, todavia, as mesmas apresentaram diferenças significativas entre os ritmos, indicando que com o aumento do ritmo, o esforço para executar os exercícios foi intensificado. Correlações significativas foram observadas entre VO2 e IEP e entre %VO2máx e IEP. Logo, baseado nessas associações, sugere-se que a prescrição da intensidade dos exercícios analisados possa ser feita através do IEP durante aulas de hidroginástica.

The purpose of the study was to correlate the oxygen consumption (VO2) and the percentage of maximal VO2 (%VO2max) with the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and to compare these variable between water aerobic exercises performed in aquatic environment at different rhythms. Six women performed four test sessions, one on dry land environment (maximal effort test) and three in aquatic environment, each one with the performance of a water aerobic exercise: stationary running, jumping jacks and frontal kick up to 45°. Each aquatic exercise was performed at three rhythms of execution, 80, 100 and 120 bpm, during 6 min (interval of 30 min). For all variables, no significant differences were observed between three exercises, however, significant differences were found between rhythms of execution for all of them, indicating that with the increase of the rhythm, the effort to perform the exercises was intensified. Significant correlations were observed between VO2 and RPE, and between %VO2max and RPE. Therefore, based on this association it is suggested that the prescription of intensity of the exercises analyzed can be done by RPE during water aerobics classes.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi comparar o índice de esforço percebido (IEP) e o consumo de oxigênio (VO2) durante o exercício aquático e terrestre, na intensidade do primeiro limiar ventilatório entre gestantes e não-gestantes. Sete gestantes (idade gestacional entre 27ª e 30ª semanas) e sete não-gestantes realizaram dois testes contínuos em cicloergômetro (água e terra) na intensidade do primeiro limiar ventilatório. Durante os testes, os gases respiratórios foram coletados com um analisador de gases portátil KB1-C da marca Aerosport. A frequência cardíaca (FC) foi obtida através de um Polar modelo F1. Os dados foram coletados a cada 20s. O IEP era indicado ao término do exercício através da escala RPE de Borg (6-20). Utilizou-se ANOVA para medidas repetidas de 1 FATOR, com post hoc de Bonferroni (p < 0,05). Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas para o VO2 e para o IEP comparando os exercícios aquático e terrestre. Além disso, não foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre gestantes e não-gestantes. Concluímos que o IEP pode ser usado para prescrição do exercício aquático e terrestre e para gestantes e não-gestantes, quando este for realizado na intensidade do primeiro limiar ventilatório e em cicloergômetro.

The purpose of the present study was to assess the differences in ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) and oxygen uptake (VO2) behavior during water and land-based exercise, performed in the exercise intensity of the first ventilatory threshold between pregnant and non-pregnant women. Seven pregnant (gestational ages between the 27th and 30th week) and seven non-pregnant women performed two continuous cycle ergometer tests (water and land-based) at the first ventilatory threshold intensity. During all sessions, respiratory gases were collected with a portable AEROSPORT KB1-C mixing box gas analyzer. A pneumotach was used with a neoprene mask. Heart rate (HR) measurements were obtained with a POLAR F1. Data were collected every 20s. RPE on Borg scale from 6 to 20 was derived at the end of the exercise. One-way ANOVA was applied for repeated measures using the post-hoc Bonferroni test (p<0.05). No significant differences were found in VO2 or RPE when comparing water with land-based exercise. In the same way, no significant difference was found between pregnant and non-pregnant subjects. We suggest that RPE can be used for water and land-based exercise prescription on cycle ergometer at the intensity of first ventilatory threshold, for both pregnant and non-pregnant women.

O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a força isométrica máxima (FIM) e a atividade elétrica dos músculos vasto medial (VM), vasto lateral (VL), reto femoral (RF), glúteo máximo (GM) e bíceps femoral (BF) entre contrações isométricas voluntárias máximas (CIVM) executadas em diferentes posições articulares e identificar as mais adequadas para normalizar o sinal de eletromiografia (EMG) de cada um dos músculos referidos, quando estes são ativados em condições dinâmicas. A amostra foi constituída de 10 indivíduos do sexo masculino, com idades entre 20 e 30 anos, familiarizados com treinamento de força. Foram realizadas CIVMs em diferentes ângulos articulares para os grupos extensores e flexores do joelho (0°, 60°, 90°) e extensores (-30°, 0°, 60°) e flexores do quadril (90°, 120°). Sobre a FIM foram encontrados valores significativamente diferentes entre as posições em 60° para flexão de joelhos e para extensão de joelhos em 60° e 90° (p<0,01) e não houve diferenças significativas entre as posições na flexão e extensão do quadril (p>0,05). Em relação ao sinal EMG, foram encontrados valores significativamente diferentes entre os ângulos para a extensão de joelhos somente no RF em 90° (p<0,01). Para a flexão de joelhos, flexão e extensão de quadril não foram encontradas diferenças siginificativas entre os músculos nos diferentes ângulos avaliados (p>0,05). Estes resultados sugerem que a posição de 60° é a mais adequada para avaliação dos flexores e extensores do joelho e que todas posições testadas neste estudo apresentam-se como adequadas para a avaliação da flexão e extensão de quadril.

The aim of this study was to compare maximal isometric force (MIF) and the electrical activity of the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, gluteus maximus and biceps femoris long head muscles between maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) performed at different joint angles, and to identify the most suitable positions to normalize the electromyography (EMG) signals from each of these muscles when they are activated under dynamic conditions. Ten men ranging in age from 20 to 30 years, who were familiar with strength training exercise, were studied. MVC at different joint angles of the knee extensors and flexors (0°, 60°, 90°) and hip extensors (-30°, 0°, 60°) and flexors (90°, 120°) were tested. The MIF values differed significantly between the 60° knee flexion and 60° and 90° knee extension positions (p<0.01). The same was not observed for hip flexion or extension (p>0.05). Significantly higher EMG values were only observed for the rectus femoris muscle at 90° knee extension (p<0.01). No differences between muscles were found for knee flexion, hip flexion or hip extension at the joint angles tested (p>0.05). These results suggest that the 60° knee joint flexion position is the most suitable for assessment of knee extension and flexion MIF, and that all positions tested in this study are suitable for the assessment of hip flexion and extension.

OBJETIVO: comparar as respostas da pressão arterial e do consumo de oxigênio (VO2) no exercício em bicicleta ergométrica, realizado na terra e na água, por gestantes e não gestantes. MÉTODOS: dez gestantes (entre 27 e 29 semanas) e dez não gestantes realizaram dois testes em cicloergômetro (um na água e um na terra), na frequência cardíaca correspondente ao primeiro limiar ventilatório (O2LV), com duração de 30 minutos cada. A pressão arterial foi aferida a cada cinco minutos durante o exercício e a frequência cardíaca e o VO2 a cada 20 segundos. Foi utilizada a análise de variância two-way e α=0,05 (SPSS 17.0). RESULTADOS: não houve diferença nas respostas cardiovasculares entre gestantes e não gestantes durante o exercício. O Grupo Gestante apresentou valores significativamente mais baixos de pressão arterial sistólica (131,6±8,2; 142,6±11,3 mmHg), diastólica (64,8±5,9; 74,5±5,3 mmHg) e média estimada (87,0±4,1; 97,2±5,7 mmHg), no exercício aquático comparado ao terrestre, respectivamente. O Grupo Não gestante também apresentou valores de pressão arterial sistólica (130,5±8,4; 135,9±8,7 mmHg), diastólica (67,4±5,7; 69,0±10,1 mmHg) e média (88,4±4,8; 91,3±7,8 mmHg) mais baixos no exercício na água do que na terra, respectivamente. Os valores de VO2 absoluto não apresentaram diferenças significativas, durante o exercício entre gestantes e não gestantes, como também nos meios aquáticos e terrestres. Após cinco minutos de repouso pós-exercício, tanto a pressão arterial quanto o VO2 já apresentavam valores semelhantes aos de repouso pré-exercício. CONCLUSÕES: para gestantes entre 27 e 29 semanas de gestação, a escolha pelo exercício aquático realizado na frequência cardíaca correspondente ao O2LV é fisiologicamente adequada. Essas mulheres também apresentam um comportamento de pressão arterial mais baixo na água comparado ao meio terrestre.

PURPOSE: to compare the blood pressure and oxygen consumption (VO2) responses between pregnant and non-pregnant women, during cycle ergometer exercise on land and in water. METHODS: ten pregnant (27 to 29 weeks of gestation) and ten non-pregnant women were enrolled. Two cardiopulmonary tests were performed on a cycle ergometer (water and land) at the heart rate corresponding to VO2, over a period of 30 minutes each. Exercise measurements consisted of recording blood pressure every five minutes, and heart rate and VO2 every 20 seconds. Two-way ANOVA was used and α=0.05 (SPSS 17.0). RESULTS: there was no difference in cardiovascular responses between pregnant and non-pregnant women during the exercise. The Pregnant Group demonstrated significant differences in systolic (131.6±8.2; 142.6±11.3 mmHg), diastolic (64.8±5.9; 74.5±5.3 mmHg), and mean blood pressure (87.0±4.1; 97.2±5.7 mmHg), during water and land exercise, respectively. The Non-pregnant women Group also had a significantly lower systolic (130.5±8.4; 135.9±8.7 mmHg), diastolic (67.4±5.7; 69.0±10.1 mmHg), and mean blood pressure (88.4±4.8; 91.3±7.8 mmHg) during water exercise compared to the land one. There were no significant differences in VO2 values between water and land exercises or between pregnant and non-pregnant women. After the first five-minute recovery period, both blood pressure and VO2 were similar to pre-exercise values. CONCLUSIONS: for pregnant women with 27 to 29 weeks of gestation, water exercise at the heart rate corresponding to VO2 is physiologically appropriate. These women also present a lower blood pressure response to exercise in water than on land.

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar as respostas cardiorrespiratórias e o índice de esforço percebido (IEP) durante a corrida em piscina funda realizada em diferentes cadências (cad) e movimentos de membros superiores (MMS). A amostra foi composta por doze mulheres saudáveis (22,3±1 anos; 56,3±5,7 kg; 164,2±5,2 cm) que realizaram o procedimento experimental em três sessões. Na primeira sessão foram realizadas as medidas corporais e o teste de esforço máximo. Nas demais sessões foram realizados os testes submáximos aquáticos com as medidas de freqüência cardíaca (FC), consumo de oxigênio (VO2), ventilação (VE), gasto energético (GE) e IEP. Cada sessão aquática (intervalo de 48 horas) foi randomicamente realizada em uma das diferentes cadências, 60 ou 80 bpm, com três testes randomizados de corrida em piscina funda (intervalo de 20 minutos), cada um realizado com um MMS específico: resistivo (RES), propulsivo (PRO) e neutro (NEU). Utilizou-se ANOVA de dois fatores, com p< 0,05 (SPSS v 11.0). Verificaram-se diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre as cadências para todas as variáveis (FC, VO2, VE, GE e IEP: p<0,001), com os maiores valores para 80 bpm. Diferenças estatisticamente significativas foram observadas entre os MMS, com valores mais elevados para o movimento PRO (FC: p=0,031; VO2: p=0,009; VE: p=0,004; GE: p=0,017; SSE: p=0,004). Não houve interação entre cadência e MMS para nenhuma das variáveis. Logo, pode-se concluir que a utilização de diferentes MMS exerce influência nas respostas cardiorrespiratórias e no IEP, assim como a utilização de diferentes ritmos de execução.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the cardiorespiratory responses and the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) during deep water running performed in different cadences (cad) and upper limbs movements (ULM). The sample comprised 12 healthy women (22.3±1 years; 56.3±5.7 kg; 164.2±5.2 cm) that performed the experimental procedure in three sessions. In the first session the corporal measures and maximal effort test were accomplished. In the other sessions aquatic submaximal tests were achieved with the measures of heart rate (HR), oxygen uptake (VO2), ventilation (VE), energetic expenditure (EE) and RPE. Each aquatic session (interval of 48 hours) was randomly performed in one of the different cadences, 60 or 80 bpm, with three randomized tests in deep water running (interval of 20 minutes), each one performed with a specific ULM: resistant (RES), propulsive (PRO) and neutral (NEU). ANOVA two-way was used, with p<0.05 (SPSS v 11.0). It was verified statistically significant difference between the cadences for all variables (HR, VO2, VE, EE and RPE: p<0.001), with the highest values for 80 bpm. Statistically significant differences were observed among ULM, with the highest values for the PRO movement (HR: p=0.031; VO2: p=0.009; VE: p=0.004, EE: p=0.017 and RPE: p=0.004). There was not significant interaction between cadence and ULM for the analyzed variables. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of different ULM in deep water running exerts influence in the cardiorespiratory responses and RPE, as well as the use of different rhythms of execution.

O objetivo do estudo foi comparar as respostas cardiorrespiratórias de um exercício de hidroginástica (corrida estacionária) realizado com e sem deslocamento horizontal no meio terrestre (MT), em piscina funda (PF) e em piscina rasa (PR). Seis mulheres jovens realizaram os exercícios durante 4 min numa cadência de 80 bpm. O exercício consistia em flexão e extensão de quadril com os braços simulando um movimento de corrida. A frequência cardíaca (FC) e o consumo de oxigênio (VO2 ) foram coletados no último minuto de exercício e a percepção de esforço (PE) foi coletada ao término do exercício. Para a comparação das variáveis utilizou-se ANOVA two-way para medidas repetidas com fatores meio e forma de execução (p < 0,05). Para todas as variáveis analisadas foram encontrados valores menores no exercício em PR comparado ao exercício no MT. Porém, nenhuma diferença foi observada entre o exercício no MT e em PF, exceto para a FC, que foi menor no exercício em PF. Em relação à forma de execução, para a FC, foram encontrados valores maiores no exercício com deslocamento quando comparado ao exercício sem deslocamento somente na PF. Estes achados sugerem a possibilidade de executar o exercício analisado em PF com gasto energético (GE) similar e FC menor quando comparado ao mesmo exercício no MT. Fato de grande relevância para populações que querem obter um GE semelhante ao exercício no MT, mas que necessitam de uma menor sobrecarga cardiovascular.

The aim of the study was to compare the cardiorespiratory responses during an hydrogymnastics exercise performed with and without horizontal movement on land environment (LE) and in a deep (DS) and in a shallow swimming pool (SS). Six YOUNG women performed the exercise during four minutes in each environment (LE, DS and SS) and situation (with and without horizontal movement) in a cadence of 80 bpm. The exercise consisted in a hip flexion/extension while the arms simulating a running movement. The heart rate (HR) and oxygen uptake (VO2 ) were veriefied during the last minute in each exercise and the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) was collected in the ending of the exercise. To variables comparisons was used ANOVA two-way for repeated measures with factors environment and situation (p < 0,05). For all cardiorespiratory variables analyzed, SS exercise were lower than that found on LE. Although, no difference was observed in the exercise performed on LE or in DS, except for the HR, that was lower during DS. Acording to the different situations, higher HR value was found during the exercise with horizontal movement when compared with the exercise without horizontal movement in the DS. These findings suggest the possibility to perform the exercise analyzed with similar energy expenditure and lower FC in DS when compared with exercise in LE. It is very important for people that need similar energy expenditure and lower cardiovascular overload during aquatic exercise.

INTRODUÇÃO: Muitos estudos têm analisado a máxima pronação subtalar sem preocupações na escolha do modelo de determinação dessa variável. OBJETIVO: Comparar a máxima pronação subtalar e o seu momento de ocorrência durante a fase de suporte, determinados a partir de dois modelos matemáticos compostos de dois e quatro pontos de referência, respectivamente. METODOLOGIA: Dezesseis corredores participaram de dois testes de economia de corrida em esteira rolante, nas velocidades de 16 e 17 km.h-1. RESULTADOS: Houveram diferenças significativas no consumo de oxigênio entre as velocidades adotadas, contrário aos valores de máxima pronação subtalar e de seus momentos de ocorrência que não apresentaram diferenças significativas entre as velocidades, independente do modelo matemático adotado. Comparando-se os dois modelos matemáticos, os valores de máxima pronação subtalar apresentaram diferenças significativas, independentemente da velocidade. Em contrapartida, os momentos de ocorrências da máxima pronação subtalar não apresentaram diferenças significativas. CONCLUSÃO: A medida da máxima pronação subtalar é influenciada pelo modelo matemático adotado. Entretanto, o momento de ocorrência da máxima pronação subtalar ao longo da fase de suporte independe do modelo.

INTRODUCTION: Many studies have analyzed the maximum subtalar pronation without any concern over the choice of model for determining this variable. OBJECTIVE: To compare the maximum subtalar pronation and its moment of occurrence during the stance phase, determined based on two mathematical models consisting of two and four reference points, respectively. METHOD: Sixteen runners participated in two running economy tests on a treadmill at speeds of 16 and 17 km.h-1. RESULT: The study showed significant differences in oxygen consumption between the speeds adopted, contrary to the values of maximum subtalar pronation and their moments of occurrence, which did not show any significant differences between the speeds, regardless of the mathematical model adopted. Comparing the two mathematical models, the values of maximum subtalar pronation showed significant differences, regardless of speed. However, the moments of occurrence of maximum subtalar pronation showed no significant differences. CONCLUSION: The measure of maximum subtalar pronation is influenced by the mathematical model adopted. However, the moment of occurrence of maximum subtalar pronation during the stance phase is independent of the model.

Diversos benefícios nos componentes da aptidão física podem ser adquiridos com a prática de exercícios aquáticos. Além disso, a água proporciona um ambiente para a prática de exercícios com reduzido impacto nos membros inferiores e maior ou menor sobrecarga cardiorrespiratória, de acordo com os movimentos realizados. Porém, tais exercícios podem produzir respostas fisiológicas diferentes daquelas ao ar livre, visto que ocorrem alterações fisiológicas importantes durante a imersão, sendo importante a compreensão das mesmas em repouso para melhor prescrição nesse meio. O presente estudo tem como objetivo revisar estudos sobre o comportamento da frequência cardíaca e do consumo de oxigênio durante a imersão em repouso e compreender os fatores que influenciam nesse comportamento. Várias pesquisas indicam que a frequência cardíaca de repouso é reduzida com a imersão em meio aquático, porém, é importante salientar que fatores tais como temperatura da água, posição corporal, profundidade de imersão e frequência cardíaca inicial podem minimizar ou maximizar tais respostas. Os estudos que abordaram as respostas de consumo de oxigênio não são conclusivos; entretanto, ao contrário da frequência cardíaca, os mesmos indicam semelhante ou maior resposta durante a imersão em repouso. Assim, pode-se concluir que, devido às alterações cardiorrespiratórias verificadas com a imersão em ambiente aquático, a prescrição de exercícios nesse meio deve ser diferenciada daquela para exercícios em ambiente terrestre.

Several benefits in the physical fitness components can be acquired with the practice of aquatic exercises. Moreover, water provides an environment for the practice of exercises with reduced impact on lower limbs and major or minor cardiorespiratory overload, depending on the movements performed. However, such exercises can produce physiological responses different from those on dry land, since important physiological alterations occur during immersion, being important to understand them at rest for better prescription in this environment. The present study has the purpose to review studies about the heart rate behavior and the oxygen uptake during immersion at rest and to understand the factors that influence in this behavior. Several investigations indicate that heart rate at rest is reduced with immersion in aquatic environment; however, it is important to highlight that factors such as water temperature, body position, immersion depth and initial heart rate may minimize or maximize such responses. The studies which approached the oxygen uptake responses are not conclusive; however, contrary to heart rate, the same ones indicate similar or greater response during immersion at rest. Thus, it can be concluded that, due to the verified cardiorespiratory alterations with immersion in aquatic environment, the prescription of exercises in this environment must be differentiated from exercises on dry land.

As aulas de hidroginástica estão cada vez mais diversificadas com o uso de materiais apropriados ao meio aquático. Entretanto, poucos estudos verificaram a influência da utilização de tais materiais nas respostas cardiorrespiratórias. O objetivo foi analisar as respostas de freqüência cardíaca, consumo de oxigênio e sensação subjetiva ao esforço em mulheres durante a execução de um exercício de hidroginástica em diferentes situações com e sem o equipamento resistivo Aquafins®. Onze mulheres realizaram o exercício deslize frontal com a flexão e extensão horizontal de ombros em quatro situações: sem equipamento resistivo (S-FINS), com Aquafins nos membros inferiores (FINS-MIs), com Aquafins nos membros superiores (FINS-MSs) e com Aquafins nos membros superiores e inferiores (FINS-MIs/MSs). Em todas as situações foi verificado a FC, o VO2 e a SSE. Utilizou-se ANOVA para medidas repetidas, com post-hoc de Bonferroni (p < 0,05). A FC foi significativamente mais elevada nas situações FINS-MIs/MSs (159 ± 12bpm) e FINS-MIs (147 ± 18bpm), comparando-as com as demais situações. No entanto, a situação FINS-MIs apresentou FC similar à FINS-MSs (148 ± 16 bpm). Por sua vez, as três situações com o Aquafins foram diferentes da situação S-FINS (131 ± 14bpm). Para o VO2 houve diferença significativa entre a situação FINS-MIs/MSs (22,77 ± 3,58ml.kg-1.min-1), comparando-a com as demais. As situações FINS-MSs (19,67 ± 4,29ml.kg-1.min-1) e FINS-MIs (20,38 ± 3,99ml.kg-1.min-1) apresentaram VO2 significativamente maior que S-FINS (15,18 ± 4,67ml.kg-1.min-1). A SSE foi significativamente maior na situação FINS-MIs/MSs (16 ± 1,55), comparando-a com FINS-MIs (14 ± 0,9) e S-FINS (13 ± 1,29), entretanto, não foi diferente da FINS-MSs (14 ± 1,57). Portanto, a utilização de equipamentos que promovam resistência ao movimento na hidroginástica é indicada para melhorias no sistema cardiorrespiratório.

Aquatic exercise sessions are becoming increasingly diversified due to the use of apparatus appropriate to aquatic environment. However, few studies analyzed the influence of the use of such apparatus in the cardiorespiratory responses. The purpose was to analyze the heart rate, oxygen consumption and the rating of perceived exertion of effort in women during an aquatic exercise performed in different situations with and without resistive equipment, AquafinsTM. Eleven women performed the cross country skiing exercise with horizontal shoulder flexion and extension in four situations: without resistive equipment (NO-FINS), with Aquafins on the lower limbs (FINS-LLs), with Aquafins on the upper limbs (FINS-ULs) and with Aquafins on the lower and upper limbs (FINS-LLs/ULs). In each situation HR, VO2 and SSE were verified. For data analysis, ANOVA for repeated measures were used, with the Bonferroni post-hoc test (p < 0.05). When compared to the other situations, HR was significantly higher with the FINS-LLs/ULs (159 ± 12 bpm) and FINS-LLs (147 ± 18 bpm). However, the FINS-LLs situation exhibited a similar HR to that of FINS-ULs (148 ± 16 bpm). In turn, the three situations with Aquafins were different from the NO-FINS (131 ± 14 bpm) situation. In the case of VO2, there was a significant difference between the FINS-LLs/ULs (22.77 ± 3.58 ml.kg-1.min-1) situation and the other situations. The FINS-ULs (19.67 ± 4.29 ml.kg-1.min-1) and FINS-LLs (20.38 ± 3.99 ml.kg-1.min-1) situations exhibited significantly higher VO2 levels than NO-FINS (15.18 ± 4.67 ml.kg-1.min-1). The RPE was significantly greater in the FINS-LLs/ULs (16 ± 1.55) situation when compared to FINS-LLs (14 ± 0.9) and NO-FINS (13±1.29), though there was no difference from the FINS-ULs (14 ± 1.57) situation. Therefore, the use of equipments that promote resistence to the movement in aquatic exercise is recommended to improvement in the cardiorespiratory system.

OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o comportamento da freqüência cardíaca (FC) ao longo da gestação, antes, durante e após as aulas de hidroginástica, e o da pressão arterial (PA) antes e após o mesmo exercício. MÉTODOS: A amostra foi composta por sete gestantes. A leitura da FC foi realizada em três momentos: 1) na artéria radial, em 15 segundos, antes do exercício, na posição sentada; 2) após 20 a 30 minutos do início do exercício, que foi realizada entre 13 e 14 na escala de percepção subjetiva de esforço (escala de Borg 6-20) na posição em pé, com água na altura do apêndice xifóide; 3) após, aproximadamente, 20 minutos do término da aula, na posição sentada. A medida de PA foi verificada antes e após o exercício nas condições descritas anteriormente. As medidas foram realizadas uma vez por semana no decorrer da gestação. Utilizou-se estatística descritiva, ANOVA para medidas repetidas e teste post-hoc de Bonferroni com p < 0,05 (SPSS versão 11.0). RESULTADOS: Não encontramos diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os finais dos trimestres gestacionais e entre as condições de medida nas variáveis avaliadas. CONCLUSÕES: Nosso estudo concluiu que a FC e PA apresentam comportamento constante ao longo dos três trimestres gestacionais.

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the behavior of heart rate (HR) throughout gestation, before, during, and after the exercise in water, as well as the behavior of blood pressure (BP) before and after the same exercise. METHODS: The sample was composed of seven pregnant women. The HR was measured in three moments: 1) in radial artery, in 15 seconds, with the women sitting; 2) after 20 to 30 minutes the beginning of exercise, which was performed varying from 13 to 14 based on the subject's perceived exertion (Borg's 6-20 scale), with women standing in a pool, with water at the level of their xiphoid process; 3) approximately 20 minutes after the end of the session, with women sitting. The measurement of BP was performed before and after exercise in the same conditions described above. Measurements were taken once a week throughout the gestational period. Descriptive statistics, ANOVA for repeated measures and the Bonferroni test were used, with p < 0.05 (SPSS version 11.0). RESULTS: No statistically significant differences were found between the end of gestational trimesters and measurement conditions of variables evaluated. CONCLUSION: We conclude that pregnants that practice water exercises presented a constant behavior of HR and BP during the gestational period. That can probably evidence a water training effect in this population.

OBJETIVO: El objetivo de este estudio ha sido el de evaluar el comportamiento de la Frecuencia Cardiaca (FC) a lo largo de la gestación, antes, durante y después de las clases de hidrogimnasia, y el de la Presión Arterial (PA) antes y después del mismo ejercicio. MÉTODOS: La muestra fue compuesta por siete gestantes. La lectura de FC fue realizada en tres momentos: 1) en la arteria radial, 15 segundos antes del ejercicio, en posición sentada; 2) después de 20 a 30 minutos de iniciado el ejercicio, realizada entre 13-14 en la escala de percepción subjetiva de esfuerzo (Escala de Borg 6-20) de pie, con agua hasta la altura del apéndice xifoide; 3) después, aproximadamente, de 20 minutos de acabada la clase, en posición sentada. La medición de PA fue verificada antes y después del ejercicio en las condiciones descritas anteriormente. Las medidas fueron realizadas una vez por semana durante el transcurso de la gestación. Se utilizó la estadística descriptiva, ANOVA para medidas repetidas y test post hoc de Bonferroni con p < 0,05 (SPSS versión 11.0). RESULTADOS: No encontramos diferencias estadísticas significativas entre los finales de los trimestres de gestación y entre las condiciones de medición en las variables evaluadas. CONCLUSIONES: Nuestro estudio concluyó que la FC y PA presenta comportamiento constante a lo largo de los tres trimestres de gestación.

OBJETIVO: identificar as respostas de freqüência cardíaca (FC), pressão arterial (PA) e peso hidrostático (PH)em grávidas imersas em diversos pontos anatômicos até o processo xifóide. MÉTODOS: onze gestantes foram submetidas ao seguinte procedimento experimental: 10 minutos em decúbito dorsal, para avaliação da FC e PA no repouso; 2 minutos em pé, para avaliação das medidos iniciais de FC, PA e massa; e um minuto para cada profundidade de imersão. Foram medidos a FC, PA e PH após imersão no nível do tornozelo, joelho, quadril, cicatriz umbilical e processo xifóide. Utilizaram-se estatística descritiva, testes de normalidade de Shapiro-Wilks e homogeneidade de Levene, ANOVA one-way e teste de Bonferroni, com p<0,05 (SPSS versão 8.0). RESULTADOS: encontramos diferenças significativas (p<0,05) para FC, PA diastólica e PA média a partir do processo xifóide (79,1±5,1 bpm; 53,3±6,7 mmHg e 63,9±6,2 mmHg, respectivamente) e para PA sistólica a partir da cicatriz umbilical (92,7±11,1 mmHg). Diferenças significativas (p<0,05) foram observadas em todas as medidas de percentual de redução do PH, dados esses semelhantes a estudos prévios com não-gestantes. CONCLUSÕES: os resultados obtidos mostram diminuição da FC e da PA em imersão aquática comparado ao ambiente terrestre, assim como redução do PH, diminuições essas proporcionais à profundidade de imersão. A diminuição do PH influenciará na redução da carga mecânica imposta às articulações de membros inferiores, uma vez que a carga mecânica depende da força vertical (peso hidrostático) e da aceleração com que o corpo toca o solo. Com esses resultados, podemos inferir que o ambiente aquático é salutar a essa população e pode ser adequado para a prática de atividades físicas.

PURPOSE: to identify the responses of heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and hydrostatic weight (HW) in pregnant women immersed up to different anatomic points as far as the xiphoid process. METHODS: eleven pregnant women underwent the following experimental procedure: 10 minutes in recumbent position for evaluation of HR and BP at rest; 2 minutes in standing position for evaluation of initial measures of HR, BP and mass, and one minute for each immersion depth. HR, BP and HW were measured after immersion up to the level of the ankle, knee, hip, navel, and xiphoid process, respectively. Descriptive statistics, test of normality (Shapiro-Wilks), homogeneity of variance test (Levene), one-way ANOVA and the Bonferroni test (SPSS version 8.0) were used, with significance at p<0.05. RESULTS: significant differences were found for HR, diastolic BP and mean BP starting from the xiphoid process (79.1±5.1 bpm; 53.3±6.7 mmHg and 63.9±6.2 mmHg, respectively) and for the systolic BP starting from the navel (92.7±11.1 mmHg). Significant differences were seen in all measurements of percent HW reduction, as in previous studies carried out with non-pregnant women. CONCLUSION: the obtained results showed a decrease in HR and BP on water immersion when compared non-immersion, as well as decreases in HW, which were proportional to the depth of immersion. The decrease in HW was found to influence the decrease in mechanical load imposed on the lower limb joints, since the mechanical load depends on both the vertical force (hydrostatic weight) and on the acceleration with which the body touches the ground. As a result, it is concluded that water is a healthy environment for the population under study, and may be adequate for the practice of physical activities.
