ABSTRACT Background: One of the impact indicators of priorities in health research-setting is the scientific production that refers to these priorities. EsSalud raised nine priority research topics (PRT) and 20 priority research questions (PRQ) for the 2017-2019 period. We assess the alignment to these research priorities in the scientific articles published during the 2017-2020 period by EsSalud, and we characterize those financed by this institution. Material and Methods: Analysis of the scientific articles registered in the EsSalud scientific production database for the period 2017-2020. We used a standardized methodology and in duplicate to evaluate the alignment of a scientific article to the PRT and PRQ 2017-2019 of EsSalud. The evaluation of the alignment to the PRQs is only carried out in original articles and congress summaries. We report alignment frequencies to each PRT and PRQ, and we report the frequency of alignment to at least one PRT according to the articles' characteristics. In addition, the characteristics of the articles financed by EsSalud were reported. Results: 170 out of 1283 articles were aligned to at least one PRT. Eight of the twenty PRQs went unanswered. Articles with authors who belong to or received funding from IETSI-EsSalud had the highest alignment rate. Finally, the highly cited articles financed by EsSalud were mainly observational studies, clinical practice guidelines and systematic reviews. Conclusion: The articles published by EsSalud during 2017 to 2020 have low alignment with institutional research priorities. Furthermore, it is necessary a process of implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of research priorities in the institution.

RESUMEN Introducción: Uno de los indicadores del impacto del establecimiento de prioridades en investigación en salud es la producción científica. EsSalud planteó nueve temas de investigación prioritarios (TIP) y 20 preguntas de investigación prioritarias (PIP) 2017-2019. Evaluamos el alineamiento a estas prioridades de investigación en los artículos científicos publicados con filiación de EsSalud durante 2017-2020, y caracterizamos aquellos financiados por esta institución. Material y Métodos: Análisis de los artículos científicos registrados en la base de datos de producción científica de EsSalud 2017-2020. Empleamos una metodología estandarizada y por duplicado para evaluar el alineamiento a los TIP y PIP 2017-2019 de EsSalud. La evaluación del alineamiento a las PIP sólo lo realizamos en artículos originales y resúmenes de congreso. Reportamos frecuencias de alineamiento a cada TIP y PIP, y frecuencia de alineamiento a por lo menos un TIP según características de los artículos. Además, se reportó las características de los artículos financiados por EsSalud. Resultados: Un total de 170 de 1283 artículos se alinearon a al menos un TIP. Ocho de las veinte PIP no fueron respondidas. Los artículos con autores que pertenecen o recibieron financiamiento del IETSI-EsSalud tuvieron la mayor tasa de alineación. Finalmente, los artículos financiados por EsSalud fueron principalmente estudios observacionales, guías de práctica clínica y revisiones sistemáticas. Conclusión: Los artículos científicos publicados con filiación de EsSalud durante el 2017 al 2020 tienen baja alineación con las prioridades de investigación de la institución. Por lo tanto, es necesario generar un proceso de gestión de implementación, seguimiento y evaluación de las prioridades de investigación en la institución.

Resumen Introducción: Las alteraciones secundarias a la enfermedad renal crónica (ERC), como inflamación sistémica, anemia y sobrecarga hídrica, son un sustrato importante para el desarrollo de hipertensión arterial pulmonar. Objetivo: Valorar la relación de la presión sistólica de la arteria pulmonar (PSAP) por ecocardiograma con el tiempo y el tipo de terapia de reemplazo renal (TRR) en pacientes con ERC. Método: Estudio observacional, retrospectivo, llevado a cabo en el Hospital de Especialidades del Centro Médico Nacional La Raza, en el que se analizaron medidas de tendencia central y medidas de dispersión. Para comparar porcentajes se utilizó la prueba de χ2 con el programa estadístico SPSS 25. Resultados: Se incluyeron 141 pacientes con ERC en TRR con diálisis peritoneal o hemodiálisis. Se clasificaron de acuerdo con la PSAP en normal (30 pacientes, 21.28%), leve (43 pacientes, 30.5%), moderada (16 pacientes, 12%) y grave (52 pacientes, 36.88%). El tiempo de TRR está relacionado con una PSAP mayor, con 3.53 años en caso de PSAP normal, 5.51 años en caso de PSAP leve, 6.00 años para la PSAP moderada y 6.38 años para la PSAP grave. La PSAP grave se presentó en 13 de 56 pacientes en diálisis peritoneal y en 39 de 85 en hemodiálisis (p = 0.034). Conclusiones: Se encontró que existe relación entre la PSAP con el tiempo y el tipo de sustitución renal en pacientes con ERC.

Abstract Introduction: The disorders secondary to chronic kidney disease (CKD), such as systemic inflammation, anemia, and fluid overload are an important substrate for the development of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Objective: To assess the relationship between pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) on echocardiogram and the duration and type of renal replacement therapy (RRT) in patients with CKD. Method: A retrospective observational study at Hospital de Especialidades del Centro Médico Nacional La Raza. The analysis was performed using measures of central tendency and dispersion. Chi square was used to compare percentages through the SPSS 25 statistical program. Results: A total of 141 patients with CKD on RRT with peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis were included. They were classified according to PASP as normal (30 patients, 21.28%), mild (43 patients, 30.5%), moderate (16 patients, 12%) and severe (52 patients, 36.88%). The duration of RRT is related to a higher PASP, with 3.53 years for a normal PASP, 5.51 years for mild PASP, 6.00 years for moderate PASP, and 6.38 for those with severe PASP. Severe PASP occurred in 13 of 56 patients on peritoneal dialysis and 39 of 85 patients on hemodialysis (p = 0.034). Conclusions: This study found a relationship between PASP and the duration and type of renal replacement in patients with CKD.

Abstract Background: Flowers are expensive reproductive elements that have cost/benefit balances in their characters. The diversity of the floral structures has been attributed to biotic factors such as the interactions with their floral visitors and abiotic factors such as the characteristics of the environment. Question: Is there a relationship between the floral morphology of M. geometrizans and the vegetation type? Is the community of arthropod floral visitors associated with floral morphology and/or the vegetation type? Will the floral morphology and the community of arthropod floral visitors be associated with the disturbance level of the environment? Studied species: Myrtillocactus geometrizans (Mart. ex Pfeiff.) Console Study site and dates: Tropical deciduous forest and xerophilous scrub in the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve, Puebla, and in the Barranca de Metztitlán Biosphere Reserve, Hidalgo, Mexico. March 2017. Methods: At the four sites (two days per site), during the flowering peak of M. geometrizans, the disturbance index was calculated, 30 flowers (N = 120) and the arthropods floral visitors were collected. Floral morphology and arthropods were determined. Results: Barranca de Metztitlán sites showed the highest disturbance index, the smallest flowers, and the highest production of floral structures. Flower visitors were more abundant in xerophilous scrubs, particularly in the most disturbed site, where the most relevant functional group was the pollinators. Conclusions: Significant differences were found in the floral morphology of M. geometrizans related to vegetation types and geographic location. A trade-off between the size and production of floral characters was reported.

Resumen Antecedentes: Las flores son elementos reproductivos costosos que presentan balances costo/beneficio en sus estructuras. La diversidad de éstas se ha atribuido a factores bióticos como las interacciones con sus visitadores florales y abióticos como las características del ambiente. Preguntas: ¿La morfología floral de M. geometrizans está relacionada con los tipos de vegetación? ¿La comunidad de artrópodos visitadores florales se relaciona con la morfología floral y/o el tipo de vegetación? ¿La morfología floral y la comunidad de artrópodos tendrán relación con la perturbación del ambiente? Especie de estudio: Myrtillocactus geometrizans (Mart. ex Pfeiff.) Console Sitio de estudio y fecha: Selva Baja Caducifolia y Matorral Xerófilo en las Reservas de la Biosfera: Tehuacán-Cuicatlán, Puebla y Barranca de Metztitlán, Hidalgo. México. Marzo 2017. Métodos: En los cuatro sitios (dos días por sitio), durante el pico de floración de M. geometrizans, se calculó el índice de disturbio, se recolectaron 30 flores (N = 120) y los artrópodos visitadores florales. Se determinaron la morfología floral y los artrópodos. Resultados: Los sitios de la Barranca de Metztitlán presentaron el mayor índice de disturbio, las flores más chicas y mayor número de estructuras florales. Los visitadores florales fueron más abundantes en los matorrales xerófilos, particularmente en el sitio más perturbado donde el grupo funcional más relevante fue el de los polinizadores. Conclusiones: Se encontraron diferencias significativas en la morfología floral de M. geometrizans relacionadas a los tipos de vegetación y ubicación geográfica. Se reportó una compensación entre tamaño y producción de estructuras florales.

Abstract Introduction: Clostridioides difficile causes diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis. Its diagnosis is made with glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) or toxins A and B detection and is confirmed with nucleic acid amplification tests. Objective: To define if GDH determination is redundant to that of toxins. Methods: Retrospective, observational study in diarrheal stools of patients with suspected Clostridioides difficile infection. Toxins and GDH were determined by immunochromatography. Bayesian simulation was performed with likelihood ratios; a p-value < 0.05 was regarded as significant. Results: 329 GDH and toxin A and B results were analyzed. Clostridioides difficile infection prevalence was 18.2 %. Sensitivity and specificity of the GDH test were 0.90 and 0.89, respectively. Positive likelihood ratio was 8.9, and negative was 0.11. Conclusions: A negative GDH result considerably reduces the probability of infection but does not rule it out. Clostridioides difficile toxins detection may be necessary in institutions where nucleic acid amplification is not affordable or accessible.

Resumen Introducción: Clostridioides difficile causa diarrea y colitis pseudomembranosa. Su diagnóstico se realiza con la detección de glutamato-deshidrogenasa (GDH) o las toxinas A y B y se confirma con pruebas de amplificación de ácidos nucleicos. Objetivo: Definir si la determinación de GDH es redundante a la de las toxinas. Métodos: Estudio observacional retrospectivo de muestras fecales de pacientes con sospecha de infección por Clostridioides difficile. Las toxinas y GDH se determinaron mediante inmunocromatografía. Se realizó una simulación bayesiana con los cocientes de probabilidad; se consideró significativo un valor de p < 0.05. Resultados: Se analizaron 329 resultados de GDH y toxinas A y B. Se encontró una prevalencia de infección de Clostridioides difficile de 18.2 %. La sensibilidad y especificidad de la prueba de GDH fue de 0.90 y 0.89, respectivamente. El cociente de probabilidad positivo fue de 8.9 y el negativo, de 0.11. Conclusiones: Un resultado negativo de GDH disminuye considerablemente la probabilidad de infección, pero no la descarta. La detección de toxinas de Clostridioides difficile puede ser necesaria en instituciones donde la amplificación de ácidos nucleicos no es económica o accesible.

Abstract Background: Understanding changes in local community composition along environmental gradients is essential for studying the long-term metacommunity dynamics. The metacommunity structure depends on the distribution of species along environmental gradients in terms of their coherence (continuity in their distribution range), species turnover and grouping of their range limits. A Clementsian structure would be defined by coherent ranges, significant turnover and sharp limits between local communities. All other things equal, a Gleasonian structure is distinguished by the absence of clear boundaries between local communities. Questions: The structure of a scrubland/semiarid/xeric metacommunity changes 23 years after its first characterization? Do environment and spatial variables determine the metacommunity structure? Species studied: 104 perennial-plant species. Study site and dates: Zapotitlán semi-arid valley, Puebla, in 1980 and 2003. Methods: Metacommunity structure and its relationship to environmental (edaphic) and spatial (altitude, slope and geographical location) variables were analyzed using data from the two historic surveys. Results: In 1980 a Clementsian structure was determined, which remained unchanged after 23 years. The importance of environmental filters decreased from 1980 to 2003. Conclusions: The prediction that, due to stochastic dispersion of propagules, the metacommunity would tend toward a Gleasonian structure was not fulfilled. There was no evidence for homogenization, although local tetechera communities (with dominance of the giant columnar cactus Cephalocereus tetetzo) had been invaded and transformed into shrubland communities. Local communities and the metacommunity should be monitored continuously to understand of the long-term structuration of these systems.

Resumen Antecedentes: Comprender los cambios en la composición de comunidades locales a lo largo de gradientes ambientales es esencial para estudiar la dinámica metacomunitaria a largo plazo. La estructura metacomunitaria depende de la distribución de especies en gradientes ambientales por su coherencia (continuidad del rango de distribución), recambio de especies y agrupación de límites de distribución. Una estructura Clementsiana presenta rangos coherentes, recambio significativo y límites claros entre comunidades locales. Una estructura Gleasoniana se distingue por la ausencia de límites claros entre comunidades locales. Preguntas: ¿La estructura de una metacomunidad de matorral xerófilo cambió 23 años después de su primera caracterización?; ¿Las variables ambientales y espaciales determinan la estructura de la metacomunidad? Especies de estudio: 104 especies de plantas perennes. Sitio y años de estudio: Valle semiárido de Zapotitlán, Puebla, en 1980 y 2003. Métodos: La estructura de la metacomunidad y su relación con variables ambientales (edáficas) y espaciales (altitud, pendiente y ubicación geográfica) se analizaron utilizando datos de los dos estudios históricos. Resultados: En 1980 se reconoció una estructura Clementsiana, que no cambió después de 23 años. La importancia de filtros ambientales disminuyó en ese período. Conclusiones: No se cumplió la predicción de que la dispersión estocástica de propágulos conduciría hacía una estructura Gleasoniana. No hubo evidencia de homogeneización de la vegetación, aunque las comunidades de tetechera (domina el cactus columnar gigante Cephalocereus tetetzo) habían sido invadidas y transformadas en matorral. La dinámica de la metacomunidad debe ser monitoreada continuamente para comprender la estructuración a largo plazo de estos sistemas.

Abstract Porocarcinoma is an infrequent malignant adnexal tumor derived from the intraepidermal portion of the eccrine sweat duct that represents 0.01% of all skin tumors. We present the case of a 61-year-old male patient, assessed for a lesion in the left third of the left tibia of four years of evolution, umbilicated, indurated, ulcerated and hyperpigmented, who during the approach was diagnosed with porocarcioma that required surgical resection with wide margins.

Resumen El porocarcinoma es un tumor anexial maligno infrecuente derivado de la porción intraepidérmica del conducto sudoríparo ecrino que representa el 0.01% de todos los tumores cutáneos. Presentamos el caso de un paciente de sexo masculino de 61 años de edad, valorado por lesión en tercio de tibia izquierda de cuatro años de evolución, umbilicada, indurada, ulcerada e hiperpigmentada, que durante el abordaje se diagnosticó porocarcioma que requirió de resección quirúrgica con márgenes amplios.

Background: Living above 2,500 meters in hypobaric conditions induces pulmonary arterial hypertension of the neonate (PAHN), a syndrome whose main features are: pathological remodeling of the pulmonary vessels, abnormal vascular reactivity and increased oxidative stress. Melatonin could have pulmonary antioxidant, anti-remodeling and vasodilating properties for this condition. Aim: To determine the effect of melatonin at the transcript level of prostanoid pathways in the lung of neonatal lambs gestated and born under hypobaric hypoxia. Material and Methods: Vehicle (1.4% of ethanol, n = 6) or melatonin (1 mg * kg1, n = 5) were administered from the postnatal day 4 to 21 to lambs gestated and born at 3,600 meters above sea level. After one week of treatment completion, lung tissue was obtained, the transcript and protein levels of prostanoid synthases and receptors were assessed by RT-PCR and Western Blot. Results: Melatonin induced the expression of prostacyclin synthase transcript and increased protein expression of the prostacyclin receptor. In addition, the treatment decreased the expression of transcript and protein of cyclooxygenase-2, without changes in the expression of the prostanoid vasoconstrictor (thromboxane) pathway. Conclusions: Postnatal treatment with melatonin increases the expression of the prostacyclin-vasodilator pathway without changing the vasoconstrictor thromboxane pathway. Further, the decreased COX-2 induced by melatonin could be an index of lesser oxidative stress and inflammation in the lung.

Abstract The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the quality of piquín pepper seed through the accelerated aging test in piquín pepper (Capsicum annuum var. Aviculare) collections from the state of Querétaro and Guanajuato. The collections were made in four locations El Patol, El Cuervo and Higuerillas of the municipality of Queretaro and El Tanque of the municipality of Xichu. The vigor of the seed was obtained by the accelerated aging test which consisted of submitting the seeds 24, 48, 72, 96, 120 and 144 h at a temperature of 42 °C and 100% relative humidity, after this period, the seeds are subjected to a normal germination test at 7, 14 and 21 days. The results in the analysis of variance expressed significant effect in genotypes, being the best time for the count performed at 7 days and at 24 h. At 14 days the best times for the witness were zero, 24 h, 48 h and 72 h. On the other hand, the quality of the seed was registered, which presented significant differences for dry stem weight, the highest values were for El Tanque and El Patol. In dry weight of root, weight of one hundred seeds and speed of emergency stand out the collections from El Tanque, El Patol and El Cuervo. Higuerillas presented lower values in the characters indicated above, a difference that could be attributed to environmental conditions.

Resumen El objetivo de la presente investigación fue evaluar la calidad de semilla de chile piquín a través de la prueba de envejecimiento acelerado en colectas de chile piquín (Capsicum annuum var. Aviculare) del estado de Querétaro y Guanajuato. Las colectas se realizaron en cuatro localidades El Patol, El Cuervo e Higuerillas del municipio de Querétaro y El Tanque del municipio de Xichú. El vigor de la semilla se obtuvo mediante la prueba de envejecimiento acelerado que consistió en someter las semillas 24, 48, 72, 96, 120 y 144 h a una temperatura de 42 °C y 100% de humedad relativa, después de este periodo, las semillas se someten a una prueba normal de germinación a los 7, 14 y 21 días. Los resultados en el análisis de varianza expresaron efecto significativo en genotipos, siendo el mejor tiempo para el conteo realizado a los 7 días y a las 24 h. A los 14 días los mejores tiempos fue para el testigo las cero, 24 h, 48 h y 72 h. Por otro lado, se registró la calidad de la semilla, las cuales presentaron diferencias significativas para peso seco de vástago, los valores más altos fueron para El Tanque y El Patol. En peso seco de raíz, peso de cien semillas y velocidad de emergencia destacan las colectas provenientes de El Tanque, El Patol y El Cuervo. Higuerillas presentó valores más bajos en los caracteres antes indicados, diferencia que podría atribuirse a las condiciones ambientales.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of irrigation with yeasts (Debaryomyces hansenii var. Fabry, Yarowia lipolytica YIBCS002, Yarowia lipolytica var. BCS and Candida pseudointermedia) on the final nutritional content of hydroponic green maize fodder (Zea Zea mays L.), applied at different fodder growth stages (1. seed-seedling stage, 2. seedling-plant 20 cm, 3. during all the culture). Irrespective of the fodder growth stages at which they were applied, all yeasts tested enhanced the content of raw protein, lipids, ash, moisture and energy. The percentage of electrolytes (Na, K, Cl, sulphates, Ca and Mg) showed different responses depending on the kind of yeast applied; D. hansenii exhibited the highest increment in all electrolytes, except for phosphorous. We conclude that the addition of yeasts belonging to the genera Debaryomyces, Candida and Yarowia to the irrigation solution of hydroponic systems enhances the nutrient content of green fodder. This kind of irrigation can be applied to generate high commercial value cultures in limited spaces.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar el efecto de la irrigación con las levaduras Debaryomyces hansenii var. Fabry, Yarowia lipolytica YIBCS002, Yarowia lipolytica var. BCS y Candida pseudointermedia sobre el contenido nutricional final del forraje verde hidropónico de maíz (Zea mays L. ), al ser efectuada en diferentes etapas de crecimiento de aquel (fase semilla-plántula o fase plántula-planta 20 cm), o bien durante todo el cultivo. Todas las levaduras incrementaron el contenido de proteína cruda, lípidos, cenizas, humedad y energía bruta, independientemente de la etapa de crecimiento del forraje en las que fueron aplicadas. El porcentaje de electrólitos (Na, K, Cl, sulfatos, Ca y Mg) varió en función de la levadura aplicada; D. hansenii incrementó todos los electrólitos, excepto el P. Se concluye que la adición de levaduras del género Debaryomyces, Candida y Yarowia en la solución de riego de sistemas hidropónicos mejora el contenido de nutrientes del forraje verde. Esta práctica puede contribuir a la generación de cultivos de valor comercial en espacios limitados

Dry eye is a complex multifactorial disease of the tears and ocular surface that results in symptoms of discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear film instability with potential damage to the ocular surface. It is accompanied by increased osmolarity of the tear film and inflammation of the ocular surface. Inestability of the tear film may also cause an increased osmolarity of the tear film, thus triggering epithelial osmotic lesions and inflammation. The occurrence of such changes on the eye surface results in disturbances of homeostatic neurophysiologic mechanisms which further worsen the process and vicious pathophysiological cycles occur.

El ojo seco es una compleja enfermedad multifactorial de la película lagrimal y de la superficie ocular caracterizada por síntomas de desconforto, alteraciones de la visión e inestabilidad del film lagrimal que puede provocar daño potencial sobre la superficie ocular. La inestabilidad del film producirá aumentos en la osmolaridad de la película lagrimal, lo que desencadena a su vez lesiones osmóticas epiteliales e inflamación. Al producirse estos cambios sobre la superficie ocular, los mecanismos neurofisiológicos de homeostasis se verán alterados lo que complicará aún más el proceso, con la aparición de circuitos viciosos fisiopatológicos.

ABSTRACT A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the tolerance and growth of three legume species (Clitoria ternatea, Phaseolus coccineus, and Cicer arietinum) and three grass species (Brachiaria hybrid, Brachiaria brizantha and Panicum maximum) to fuel oil-contaminated soil, and to evaluate their ability to diminish the content of total hydrocarbons from fuel oil. Seeds were sowed in non-contaminated and contaminated soil with fuel oil (50,000 mg kg-1) by an accidental spill, and collected from Fríjol Colorado, Veracruz. After 90 days, plant tolerance and growth, rhizosphere microbial population, and fuel oil-degradation were evaluated. Phaseolus coccineus was the only legume that tolerated and grew up in contaminated soil; in contrast, the three grass species were not negatively affected by the fuel-oil in soil, though Brachiaria hybrid showed higher growth. Rhizosphere bacterial and fungal populations were differentially affected by the presence of the contaminant in combination with the plant. However, highest microbial population was quantified in the P. coccineus rhizosphere at contaminated soil when compared to the other plants. Fuel oil-degradation qualitatively measured via GC-MS, was greater at the B. brizantha and P. maximum rhizo-sphere. In contrast, P. coccineus showed similar fuel oil-degradation to that observed at non-planted contaminated soil.

RESUMEN Se hizo un estudio en invernadero para evaluar la tolerancia y el crecimiento de tres especies de leguminosas (Clitoria ternatea, Phaseolus coccineus, Cicer arietinum) y tres gramíneas (Brachiaria híbrido, Brachiaria brizantha y Panicum maximum) en suelo contaminado con combustóleo, así como su capacidad de reducir el contenido de hidrocarburos provenientes del mismo. Se sembraron semillas en el suelo no contaminado y en el suelo colectado de la comunidad Frijol Colorado, Veracruz, que fue contaminada por un derrame accidental de combustóleo (50,000 mg kg-1). A los 90 días, se evaluó la tolerancia, crecimiento, la población microbiana en la rizósfera y la degradación de combustóleo. Phaseolus coccineus fue la única leguminosa con tolerancia y crecimiento en suelo contaminado; mientras que las tres gramíneas no fueron afectadas negativamente por la presencia del contaminante, aunque el híbrido de Brachiaria mostró mayor crecimiento. La población rizosférica de bacterias y hongos fue diferencialmente afectada por la presencia del contaminante en combinación con la planta. Sin embargo, la rizósfera de P coccineus presentó mayor población microbiana en el suelo contaminado en comparación con las plantas restantes. La degradación de combustóleo evaluada cualitativamente por GC-MS, fue mayor en la rizósfera de B. brizantha y P. maximum. En contraste P. coccineus presentó una degradación similar a la observada en suelo contaminado sin planta.

La gran controversia que existe respecto a los resultados de la aplicación de políticas orientadas al mercado sobre las condiciones de vida de la población, en especial sobre la desigualdad en la distribución del ingreso, ha constituido la preocupación que ha dado origen a este trabajo. Con el objetivo de testear la hipótesis de que una estructura de libre mercado promueve una mejor distribución del ingreso, hemos realizado varias cuantificaciones de índices de desigualdad en las distintas estructuras del mercado laboral en Bolivia; asi-mismo, se ha aplicado un modelo de microsimulación, para ver en que medida un cambio hacia políticas orientadas al mercado puede mejorar la distribución del ingreso y, por último, se ha realizado un ejercicio para vincular la desigualdad del ingreso con la movilidad social. Los resultados alcanzados, si bien no son lo suficientemente fuertes para validar la hipótesis, son lo suficientemente claros para mostrarnos que las políticas de libre mercado no actúan de manera negativa sobre la distribución del ingreso.

The great controversy regarding the results of the application of market-oriented policies on the population's conditions of life, especially about the inequality in the distribution of income, has constituted the concern that has given origin to this paper. With the objective to test the hypothesis that a free market structure promotes a better income distribution, we have carried out several quantifications of inequality indices in the different structures of the labor market in Bolivia; also, a microsimulation model has been applied, to see whether change toward a market-oriented structure can improve the distribution of income and, lastly, we have carried out an exercise to link income inequality with social mobility. The reached results, although they are not the sufficiently strong to validate the hypothesis, are sufficiently clear to show us that the free market policies do not act in a negative way on the income distribution.

Dadas las características de la economía boliviana: pequeña, muy abierta al comercio exterior, con un sector público muy grande y con tasas de ocupación interna muy bajas, las proyecciones de los escenarios (optimista y pesimista) para los años 2005 a 2014 requieren incorporar algunas hipótesis respecto a la inversión extranjera, la participación del gobierno en la economía, la política monetaria y cambiaría, y los precios internacionales, entre otros. El deterioro del cuadro político interno y el incremento de los conflictos sociales perjudicaron al país de dos maneras: una contracción en el financiamiento externo para cubrir el elevado déficit fiscal y una caída en el flujo de la inversión extranjera directa, recursos necesarios para el desarrollo de los sectores relacionados a la exploración de recursos naturales (hidrocarburos) que garantizarían un crecimiento sostenible y menos dependiente de shocks externos en los próximos años. Para cada escenario se proyectaron las principales variables macroeconómicas y financieras, dando como resultado importante que el PIB en el escenario favorable solamente crece 3 por ciento y en el pesimista se reduce en 2.4 por ciento.

Following the features of the Bolivian economy: small and widely open to the international markets, with a vast public sector and high unemployment rates; the forecasting of two economic scenarios (optimistic and pessimistic) for the period 2005-2014, includes specific hypotheses about the Foreign Direct Investment, Government Size, Monetary and Exchange Rate Policies and International Commodity Prices behavior. The crisis within the Bolivian political schemes and the increased social unrest episodes, constituted a hindrance to the country's economy in two ways: a narrowing of foreign financing in order to balance the public sector deficit and, a reduction of foreign direct investment; both of them are necessary sources for the development of natural resources' exploration (hydrocarbons) which will help to guarantee a sustainable growth and a self insurance against foreign economic shocks. For each scenario, there were forecasted the main macroeconomic and financial variables, and the paper findings points out to an economic growth of 3 and 2.4 per cent in the optimistic and pessimistic scenarios respectively.
