Abstract Renal abscesses are a rare complication of urinary tract infections and may be associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Most cases occur in patients with predisposing factors such as immunosuppression. Diagnosis requires high clinical suspicion and its treat ment consists in the use of parenteral antibiotics and antifungals associated or not with surgical interventions such as nephrostomy and nephrectomy. Few cases have been published in the medical literature of multifocal bilateral renal abscesses and even fewer due to Candida albicans. We present the case of a 20-year-old woman with type 1 diabetes mellitus, diagnosed at age 8, multiple hospitalizations for diabetic ketoacidosis, and recent hospitalization for candidemia (Candida albicans) treated with fluconazole for 23 days. Eighteen days after her discharge, she consulted for dull flank pain and gen eral symptoms. Contrast enhanced abdominal tomography showed bilateral multifocal abscesses and Candida albicans was isolated in one of the samples obtained from lesions. She received fluconazole 400 mg, 6 weeks i.v. and 2 weeks via enteral route, evolving favorably with clinical and imag ing improvement, continuing outpatient clinical monitoring. This report highlights the importance of diagnosis and treatment of this rare complication in complex diseases such as diabetes mellitus.

Resumen Los abscesos renales son una complicación poco frecuente de las infecciones del tracto urinario y suelen asociarse con un aumento de la morbi-mortalidad. La mayoría de los casos ocurre en pacientes con factores predisponentes como la inmunosupresión. El diagnóstico requiere de una elevada sospecha clínica y el trata miento consiste en el uso de antibióticos y antifúngicos parenterales asociados o no a intervenciones quirúrgicas como nefrostomía y nefrectomía. Son pocos los casos publicados en la literatura médi ca de abscesos renales bilaterales multifocales y menos aún por Candida albicans. Se presenta el caso de una mujer de 20 años de edad con diabetes mellitus tipo 1 diagnosticada a los 8 años, múltiples internaciones por cetoacidosis diabética y reciente internación por can didemia (Candida albicans) completando tratamiento con fluconazol por 23 días. A los 18 días de su externación, consulta por dolor en flancos de tipo sordo y síntomas ge nerales; se realizó tomografía de abdomen con contraste que mostró abscesos multifocales bilaterales. Aislándose Candida albicans en una de las muestras obtenidas de las lesiones; recibió tratamiento con fluconazol 400 mg por 6 semanas endovenoso y 2 semanas vía enteral, evolu cionando favorablemente con mejoría clínica e image nológica continuando seguimiento clínico ambulatorio. Este reporte resalta la importancia del diagnóstico y tratamiento de esta complicación infrecuente en enfer medades complejas como la diabetes.

Darwiniana, nueva serie 11(1): 337-346. In the framework of a phytoplankton and biotoxin monitoring program implemented since 2008 in marine coastal waters of the Buenos Aires Province (Argentina), the strain LPCc022 of a nanoplanktonic, thin-walled woloszynskioid dinoflagellate, has been isolated. LSU rDNA-based phylogeny showed that the isolated strain belonged to a molecular clade corresponding with of Biecheleria brevisulcata. B. brevisulcata can be differentiated by light microscopy from the species B. baltica, B. halophila, B. cincta and B. tirezensis based on the location of the nucleus in the cell, the size range of the cells, and the environments they inhabit. This is the first report of the genus Biecheleria and the species B. brevisulcata in Argentina and overall South-western Atlantic waters.

Darwiniana, nueva serie 11(1): 337-346. En el marco de un programa de monitoreo de fitoplancton y biotoxinas implementado desde 2008 en aguas marinas costeras de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (Argentina), ha sido aislada la cepa LPCc022 de un dinoflagelado woloszynskioide, nanoplanctónico, de paredes delgadas. La filogenia basada en LSU rDNA mostró que la cepa aislada pertenecía a un clado molecular correspondiente a Biecheleria brevisulcata. B. brevisulcata puede ser diferenciada mediante microscopía óptica de las especies B. baltica, B. halophila, B. cincta y B. tirezensis sobre la base de la ubicación del núcleo en la célula, el rango de tamaño de las células y los ambientes que habitan. Este es el primer reporte del género Biecheleria y la especie B. brevisulcata en Argentina y en general en aguas del Atlántico sudoccidental.

The worldwide emergence of viral diseases such as Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya, West Nile and Yellow Fever urge the search for solutions to eliminate their common vector, the Aedes aegypti mosquito. This paper describes the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) and docking studies of a series of nine 3-(3-aryl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)propionic acids (AOPA), 1-9, previously published by our group. Additionally, three new 1,2,4-oxadiazoles, 10-12, have also been synthesized, characterized and studied. The QSAR and docking studies of all compounds, 1-12, clearly indicate that larger hydrophobic substituents such as biphenyl groups attached on position 3 in 1,2,4-oxadiazoles improve the larvicidal activity. It is worthwhile to mention that nanocapsulation of compounds 10-12 were necessary to help their dissolution in water and these three new 1,2,4-oxadiazoles also exhibited approximately equal or higher larvicidal activities compared to the former prototypes at stage L4.

Abstract Purpose This study aims to examine the dimensions of organisational failure in the Brazilian sugarcane and ethanol refineries, as reported in judicial recovery plans. Design/methodology/approach This paper follows a qualitative, inductive approach that uses content analysis to examine the details of recovery plans. Besides, a cause-and-effect relationship diagram is proposed, making it possible to identify the interconnections between the identified variables. Findings There is evidence that organisational failures are not a linear outcome. Organisational failures are complex and occur because of several factors, often interdependent and operating at different levels. Research limitations/implications Organisational failures basically have three interrelated levels: the macro-level (external environment), the meso-level (organisational environment) and the micro-level (associated with the decision-maker). The relationship between these levels is not trivial and involves coordinated research efforts. Practical implications Organisations must consider all types of failure levels when developing business reorganisation plans. Reorganisation plans are more than a formal document to achieve judicial recovery, as they should incorporate strategic factors. Social implications Organisational failures are regularity in organisations’ day-to-day. Understanding failure’s sources is vital to design firms’ strategies and public policies. Originality/value The study of organisational failure involves the analysis of complex and multidimensional phenomena. Judicial recovery plans are the means for companies to get a second chance. To that end, this paper addresses the sources of organisational failures through the lens of judicial plans.

ABSTRACT Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcomes of patients with trichiasis treated with a modified interlamellar oral mucosa graft surgery technique using fibrin glue. Methods: A prospective study was conducted at the Oculoplastic Department of Ouro Verde Hospital Complex. Patients with recurrent trichiasis without entropion who did not respond to conventional therapy, underwent intermarginal lamellar splitting of the eyelid and oral mucous graft insertion with fibrin glue replacing sutures. They were then evaluated at 1-day, 1-week, 1-month, 6-month, and 4-year follow-ups. Graft adherence, symptom resolution, esthetic satisfaction, overall patient satisfaction, and trichiasis recurrence were assessed at 6-month and 4-year follow-ups. Results: Fifteen patients (a total of 19 eyes) were included, of whom 10 (66.7%) were female and 5 (33.3%) were male. The mean age was 75.4 ± 10.5 years (range, 54-98 years). Acquired trichiasis was the main cause. Of the patients with acquired trichiasis, 12 (86.7%) had chronic blepharitis, 2 (13.3%) had an undetermined cause, and one (6.7%) had trachomatous trichiasis. Most cases involved only one eyelid segment (89.4%) and =5 lashes (84.2%; minor trichiasis). No adverse reactions from the fibrin glue were reported and no sutures were required after graft placement. At 6 months, no graft failures occurred, 17 eyes of 13 patients (89.4%) showed good graft adherence, 2 eyes of 2 patients (10.5%) showed partial graft adherence, and 2 eyes of 1 patient (10.5%) had trichiasis recurrence. At 4-year follow-up, no graft failure occurred, 3 patients (3 eyes) were lost to follow-up, and 2 eyes of 2 patients (14.2%) had trichiasis recurrence. The 4-year cumulative success rate was 78.9%. Conclusions: The modified interlamellar surgery with fibrin glue showed a good long-term success rate. This technique reduces surgical time, facilitates smaller graft insertion, and therefore, should be considered for recalcitrant minor trichiasis without entropion.>

RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os resultados a longo prazo da técnica cirúrgica modificada de enxerto interlamelar de mucosa oral usando cola de fibrina para o tratamento de triquíase. Métodos: Um estudo prospectivo foi realizado no Departamento de Óculo-plástica do Complexo Hospital Ouro Verde. Pacientes com triquíase recorrente sem entrópio, que não responderam à terapia convencional, foram submetidos à cirurgia com separação intermarginal das lamelas das pálpebras e inserção de enxerto de mucosa oral usando cola de fibrina, substituindo a sutura. Pacientes foram avaliados 1 dia, 7 dias, 1 mês, 6 meses e 4 anos após a cirurgia. A aderência do enxerto, resolução dos sintomas, satisfação estética, satisfação geral do paciente e recorrência de triquíase foram avaliados aos 6 meses e aos 4 anos. Resultados: Quinze pacientes (total de 19 olhos) foram incluídos, dos quais 10 (66.7%) eram do sexo feminino e 5 (33.3%) do sexo masculino. A média de idade foi 75.4 ± 10.5 anos (intervalo 54-98 anos). Triquíase adquirida foi a principal causa, da qual 12 pacientes apresentaram blefarite crônica (86.7%), 2 pacientes com causa indeterminada (13.3%) e 1 paciente com triquíase tracomatosa (6.7%). A maioria dos casos envolveu apenas um segmento da pálpebra (89.4%) e com =5 cílios (84.2%; triquíase menor). Nenhuma reação adversa foi reportada com o uso da cola de fibrina e nenhum caso necessitou de sutura após inserção do enxerto. Aos 6 meses, não houve nenhuma falha de enxerto, 17 olhos de 13 pacientes (89.4%) apresentaram boa aderência de enxerto, 2 olhos de 2 pacientes (10.5%) mostraram aderência parcial do enxerto e 2 olhos de 1 paciente (10.5%) apresentaram recorrência da triquíase. Aos 4 anos, não houve nenhuma falha de enxerto, 3 olhos de 3 pacientes tiveram perda de seguimento e 2 olhos de 2 pacientes (14.2%) apresentaram recorrência da triquíase. A taxa de sucesso acumulativa após 4 anos foi de 78.9%. Conclusão: A cirurgia modificada de enxerto interlamelar de mucosa oral usando cola de fibrina mostrou uma boa taxa de sucesso a longo prazo. Esta técnica reduz o tempo cirúrgico, facilita a inserção de enxertos menores e, portanto, deve ser considerada em triquíase menor sem entrópio resistente ao tratamento convencional.

The use of conducting polymers as coating layers for the protection of surfaces against corrosion represents an important topic for investigation, as reported in the literature. In this work, polypyrrole/Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4_NPs/PPy) hybrid nanocomposites (HN) were incorporated as anticorrosive additives in an epoxy paint to protect SAE 1010 carbon steel from corrosion. The HN particles were obtained by chemical polymerization of pyrrole in an aqueous solution in the presence of Fe3O4_NPs and were characterized by infrared absorption spectrophotometry, dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used in the analysis of the electrochemical response of the coated surface with and without HN. DLS data showed that the Fe3O4_NPs and Fe3O4_NPs/PPy obtained in solution present average diameters of (19.7 ± 9.6) nm and (63.5 ± 27.7) nm, respectively. TEM images showed Fe3O4_NPs with smaller sizes (10 nm - 30 nm), and that the HN had diameters smaller than 100 nm, consisting of Fe3O4 cores coated with polypyrrole. EIS measurements have shown that the addition of HN to the epoxy paint could improve the efficiency of the anticorrosive coating when compared to the original epoxy paint prepared without any corrosion inhibitor.

The production of conductive and organic devices from a 3D printer represents a promising strategy for several areas. In particular, the synthesis of polypyrrole-coated acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) composites can be considered an important step to produce conductive supports for 3D printing. Herein, it is reported the production of ABS samples through the additive manufacturing process (3D printing) accordingly to the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) method. The hydrophilic behavior was controlled by the surface treatment using air plasma for the following step of coating with polypyrrole (PPy) via an in situ polymerization, using two different oxidants: ferric chloride (FeCl3.6H2O) and ammonium persulfate (APS). The chemical, optical, surface, and electrical properties of these materials were characterized through Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), contact angle measurements, cyclic voltammetry, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), 4-probe electrical measurement, and mechanical tensile testing. The ABS/PPy (FeCl3) composite exhibited a low electrical contact resistance and better performance for applications that require electrodes with a good conductance level.

First molecular description of autochthonous urban cases of canine visceral leishmaniasis in the city of Belém, Pará, Brazil

Abstract Leishmaniasis is an anthropozoonosis transmitted by vectors, with dogs being the main domestic reservoirs. Brazil is one of the countries most affected by this disease, and it has been described in humans and dogs in every region in the country. In the northern region leishmaniasis cases in humans have been described in more than 100 municipalities in the State, including the capital, Belém. This study involves two cases of canine visceral leishmaniasis in which the animals developed clinical signs compatible with the disease in urban areas in Belém, the Pará state capital. The diagnosis was confirmed via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect SSUr-rDNA and kDNA of Leishmania sp. and Leishmania infantum, respectively. In one of the cases the animal died and in the other the animal underwent treatment with medicines prescribed for dogs. Through this treatment, parasitemia in the second animal has been kept under control and is being monitored through molecular tests. Previously, no canine cases had been notified from urban neighborhoods in the city of Belém, but only on the island of Cotijuba, at a distance of 29 kilometers from the city. Cases of canine and human leishmaniasis have been recorded close to the capital, Belém, which has areas of conserved vegetation and where the presence of disease vectors has been described. Thus, as has been done in several other Brazilian cities, this study uses clinical and laboratory findings to confirm the presence of autochthonous cases of canine visceral leishmaniasis in the city of Belém.

Resumo A leishmaniose é uma antropozoonose transmitida por vetores, sendo os cães os principais reservatórios domésticos. O Brasil é um dos países mais acometidos por esta doença, sendo descrita em humanos e cães em todas as regiões do país. Na região norte casos de leishmaniose em humanos foram descritos em mais de 100 municípios do Estado, incluindo a capital, Belém. Este estudo envolve dois casos de leishmaniose visceral canina em que os animais desenvolveram sinais clínicos compatíveis com a doença em áreas urbanas de Belém, capital do estado do Pará. O diagnóstico foi confirmado pela reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) para detectar o SSUr-rDNA e kDNA de Leishmania sp e Leishmania infantum, respectivamente. Em um dos casos o animal veio a óbito e no outro o animal foi submetido a tratamento com medicamentos prescritos para cães. Por meio desse tratamento, a parasitemia no segundo animal foi mantida sob controle e está sendo monitorada por meio de testes moleculares. Anteriormente, nenhum caso canino havia sido notificado em bairros urbanos da cidade de Belém, apenas na ilha de Cotijuba, distante 29 quilômetros da cidade. Casos de leishmaniose canina e humana foram registrados próximo à capital, Belém, que possui áreas de vegetação conservada e onde foi descrita a presença de vetores de doenças. Abstract Ticks parasitizing 102 wild animals in the states of Mato Grosso and Goiás, Brazil were collected between 2015 and 2018. A total of 2338 ticks (865 males, 541 females, 823 nymphs, and 109 larvae) belonging to four genera (Amblyomma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis, and Rhipicephalus) and at least 21 species were identified. DNA extraction and a molecular survey for rickettsial agents were performed on 650 ticks. The results revealed parasitism by the following species: Rickettsia amblyommatis in Amblyomma cajennense s.s., A. cajennense s.l., Amblyomma coelebs, Amblyomma humerale, Amblyomma longirostre, Amblyomma nodosum, Amblyomma scalpturatum, Amblyomma sculptum, and Amblyomma romitii; Rickettsia parkeri in Amblyomma nodosum, Amblyomma ovale, Amblyomma scalpturatum, and Amblyomma triste; Rickettsia rhipicephali in Haemaphysalis juxtakochi; Rickettsia sp. in A. cajennense s.s., A. nodosum, and A. sculptum, and lastly, ‘Candidatus Rickettsia andeanae’ in Amblyomma parvum and Rhipicephalus microplus. This study expands the body of knowledge about tick parasitism among wild animals, including new data concerning tick-host associations, and provides information about the epidemiology of tick-borne pathogens in the Center-West region of Brazil.

Resumo Foram coletados carrapatos parasitando 102 animais silvestres nos estados de Mato Grosso e Goiás, Brasil, entre 2015 e 2018. Um total de 2338 carrapatos (865 machos, 541 fêmeas, 823 ninfas e 109 larvas) pertencentes a quatro gêneros (Amblyomma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis e Rhipicephalus) e pelo menos 21 espécies foram identificadas. A extração de DNA e pesquisa molecular para agentes riquétsiais foram realizadas em 650 carrapatos. Os resultados revelaram parasitismo pelas seguintes espécies: Rickettsia amblyommatis em Amblyomma cajennense s.s., A. cajennense s.l., Amblyomma coelebs, Amblyomma humerale, Amblyomma longirostre, Amblyomma nodosum, Amblyomma scalpturatum, Amblyomma sculptum e Amblyomma romitii; Rickettsia parkeri em Amblyomma nodosum, Amblyomma ovale, Amblyomma scalpturatum e Amblyomma triste; Rickettsia rhipicephali em Haemaphysalis juxtakochi; Rickettsia sp. em A. cajennense s.s., A. nodosum e A. sculptum e, por último, ‘Candidatus Rickettsia andeanae’ em Amblyomma parvum e Rhipicephalus microplus. Este estudo amplia o conhecimento sobre o parasitismo de carrapatos em animais silvestres, incluindo-se novos dados sobre associações carrapato-hospedeiro. ABSTRACT Astrocaryum aculeatum Mart. Moreover, Astrocaryum acaule Mart. are palm trees with ecological and extractive importance in the Amazon. These are hearty species that have been associated with archaeological sites and thrive in the presence of humans in certain areas. This work aimed to verify the effect of global climate change on the potential geographic distribution of A. acaule and A. aculeatum in the current period and future climate scenarios using ecological niche modeling in Brazilian phytogeographic domains. The modeling was based on 19 bioclimatic variables obtained from the Worldclim website and four algorithms (Climate space model, Envelope Score, Niche Mosaic, and Environmental Distance). Additionally, the Environmental Distance algorithm showed greater similarity regarding species distribution with potential occurrence in the five Brazilian domains (Amazon, Pantanal, Caatinga, Cerrado, and Atlantic Forest). The dispersion patterns were very similar between the two Astrocaryum palms though A. aculeatum was more sensitive to climatic variations. A. acaule may be more resilient to changes, as demonstrated by being able to recolonize in the southern portion of the Amazon in future scenarios in the year 2070. The modeling helped to delimit potential areas for A. aculeatum and A. acaule, indicating the need for the conservation of the species in more sensitive regions.

RESUMO Astrocaryum aculeatum Mart. e Astrocaryum acaule Mart. são palmeiras que apresentam importância ecológica e para o extrativismo na Amazônia. São espécies rústicas e que foram associadas a sítios arqueológicos e à presença de humanos em determinadas áreas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar o efeito das mudanças climáticas globais na distribuição geográfica potencial de A. acaule e A. aculeatum, no período atual e em cenários climáticos futuros, utilizando a modelagem de nicho ecológico nos domínios fitogeográficos brasileiros. As modelagens foram baseadas em 19 variáveis bioclimáticas, obtidas no site do Worldclim, e quatro algoritmos (Climate space model, Envelope Score, Niche Mosaic e Enviromental Distance), dos quais o algoritmo Environmental Distance apresentou maior similaridade quanto à distribuição das espécies com ocorrência potencial nos cinco domínios brasileiros (Amazônia, Pantanal, Caatinga, Cerrado e Mata Atlântica). Os padrões de dispersão foram muito similares entre as duas palmeiras de Astrocaryum, porém A. aculeatum é mais sensível às variações climáticas. A. acaule tem potencial para ser mais resiliente às mudanças, podendo recolonizar a porção sul da Amazônia em cenários futuros, no ano de 2070. A modelagem auxiliou a delimitar as áreas potenciais de A. aculeatum e A. acaule, indicando a necessidade de conservação das espécies em regiões mais sensíveis.

In this work, an iron/biochar composite was evaluated as a catalyst for 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid (dicamba) herbicide degradation by heterogeneous Fenton-like process. The biochar was produced from pyrolysis of coffee husks. After FeII adsorption by biochar, the material was submitted to chemical reduction, via borohydride, producing zero-valent iron nanoparticles (BIO-Fe0). The material was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Raman scattering spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis, among other techniques. The BIO-Fe0 is a heterogeneous material, and the main constituent elements are carbon (C), oxygen (O), silicon (Si), sulfur (S) and iron (Fe). The dicamba degradation was monitored by high-performance liquid chromatography and biological assays using beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) as indicator species. The commercial dicamba (500 mL; 250 mg L 1) was submitted to Fenton-like process (initial pH 3.20; BIO-Fe0: 3 or 5 g; 1.00 mL H2O2 at 3.00 mmol L 1; 1.00 mL Al2(SO4)3 at 1.00 mol L 1; 25 ºC and 5 h of reaction), presenting ca. 100% of degradation. These treated solutions were used in a biological assay. The intoxication levels were less 30%. These results show that BIO-Fe0 has the potential to be used in the dicamba degradation by Fenton-like processes.

ABSTRACT Despite the great economic importance of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.), information about clonal plantations and planting conditions of this tree is still scarce. Thus, we evaluated initial field establishment of five clonal yerba mate cultivars, planted at three seasons of the year (summer, autumn, and spring) in a shaded environment, and in the autumn, we also established blocks in a full sunlight environment, to compare both cultivation environments. We evaluated plants at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after planting, counting the surviving plants, shoots number, and measuring height and canopy diameter. At 12 months we also analyzed the caffeoylquinic acids (CQA) contents in mature leaves from different environments. Plant survival and growth were not affected by planting seasons. Cultivars Aupaba and BRS 409 had the highest survival rates in all seasons evaluated. The shaded environment provided greater survival and growth than full sunlight, also showing higher CQA levels in the leaves. Clonal cultivars Aupaba, BRS 408, and BRS 409 presented higher growth in both environments. The severe drought in the first year may have affected survival; however, growth was considered satisfactory and plants’ initial establishment was better in the shaded environment.

Abstract Scientific diving (SD) is defined as any diving activity that applies scientific procedures to produce subsidies for studies and technical works in underwater environments. The first report of an underwater scientific study in Brazil dates to the 19th century, in the Abrolhos reefs. Currently, in Brazil, scientific diving has been performed in various areas, from shallow coastal regions to remote and sometimes hard-to-reach places, such as oceanic islands, flooded caves, and icy areas like Antarctica. However, the regulation of SD in Brazil still lacks more concrete actions towards an effective and efficient self-regulation that offers physical safety to practitioners and institutional safeguards for organizations that use it in their research projects. Thus, this article aims to contribute to a better understanding of this critical issue in Brazil and to serve as a reference and incentive for the training of professionals and the development of these activities in the country. It includes: 1) a historical review of SD; 2) a diagnosis of the training and application of SD in Brazil; 3) the evolution of marine sciences in Brazil from the perspective of SD; 4) a review of the use of environmental assessment and underwater conservation techniques in oceans and internal waters; 5) an analysis of the evolution of scientific diver training in Brazil, including a diagnosis on training; 6) the history and updates of the rules, regulations, and safety of SD. Given all the potential of diving combined with specific techniques for research, monitoring, and marine and limnic science in Brazil, we aim to understand the evolution of scientific diving teaching and to outline perspectives in the country, as it is crucial for the training of qualified scientists capable of performing these underwater tasks. Finally, we present future plans for the development of this activity in Brazil from the point of view of research and the labor market.

Resumo Considerado o motor econômico de muitos países, a cultura do café representa um importante componente da cadeia agrícola no Brasil. Os crescentes valores de comercialização, das áreas de plantio e da produtividade da cultura requerem aquisição de mudas de qualidade, que devem receber adequado aporte nutricional através do uso eficiente de fertilizantes. Fertilizantes de liberação lenta e controlada, a exemplo dos organominerais, ganham destaque quando se trata de aumento da eficiência no uso do fósforo, assim como as bactérias promotoras de crescimento de plantas (BPCP) com características solubilizadoras de fosfato. Esse estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de diferentes fontes de fertilizantes mineral e organomineral, inoculados e não inoculados com BPCP, sobre parâmetros de qualidade de mudas de café. De forma geral, as fontes de P utilizadas no experimento interferiram positivamente no desenvolvimento das mudas de café. Isso comprova que existe a necessidade de complementação nutricional para um bom desenvolvimento das mudas. Dentre as fontes utilizadas, o organomineral na forma granulada apresentou melhor desempenho nos parâmetros de crescimento e fisiológicos das mudas de café, mostrando ser uma alternativa viável aos fertilizantes comumente utilizados. Abstract Considered the economic engine of many countries, the coffee culture represents an important component of the agricultural chain in Brazil. The growing values of commercialization, planting areas, and crop productivity require the acquisition of quality seedlings, which must receive adequate nutritional support through efficient fertilizers. Slow and controlled-release fertilizers, such as organominerals, gain prominence when it comes to increasing efficiency in the use of phosphorus, as well as plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) with phosphate solubilizing characteristics. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different sources of mineral and organomineral fertilizers, inoculated and non-inoculated with PGPB on the quality parameters of coffee seedlings. In general, the P sources used in the experiment positively interfered with the development of coffee seedlings. This proves that there is a need for nutritional supplementation for the good development of the seedlings. Among the sources used, the organomineral in granulated form showed better performance in coffee seedlings' growth and physiological parameters, proving to be a viable alternative to commonly used fertilizers. Abstract Introduction: Different COVID-19 vaccines were developed in a short time after the beginning of pandemics, reducing mortality, especially in high risk population. This was demonstrated in several studies, mostly retrospective or based in mathematical models. The objective was to compare mortality in inpatients with COVID-19 related to vaccination. Methods: Longitudinal, prospective, comparative, observational study. Inpatients with COVID-19 diagnosis were included between 17/12/2021 and 23/02/22, in Hospital Nacional Prof. A Posadas and Hospital Interzonal General de Agudos Eva Perón. Results: Inpatients (245) were analyzed, finding an overall mortality of 25.3%, 16.8% in fully vaccinated patients (two or more doses with less than 150 days since the last dose until the COVID-19 test) and 31.9% in those with incomplete vaccination (unvaccinated, one dose or two or more doses with more than 150 days since the last dose) (p = 0.007), OR 2.31 (IC95; 1.25-4.28) for incomplete vaccination. Mortality was 32.2% in patients who developed pneumonia, 22.2% for fully vaccinated and 38% for incompletely vaccinated (p = 0.048), OR 2.15(IC95; 1.01-4.58). Mortality was associated with older age (70 vs. 59 years; p < 0.001), female sex (54.8% vs. 37.7%; p < 0.02) and oncologic disease (27.4 vs. 14.8%; p = 0.02). PESI score was higher in incompletely vaccinated (102.5 vs. 93, p = 0.05) and SOFA score was lower (2 vs. 3, p = 0.01). The necessary number to treat (NNT) to prevent one death was 7 patients for the overall sample (IC95;4-22) and 6 (IC95;3-106) for pneumonia. Discussion: This study constitutes a starting point for develop ing other investigations and raising awareness of medical community and people about the beneficial effects of vaccination.

Resumen Introducción: Luego del inicio de la pandemia por COVID-19, se desarrollaron diferentes vacunas, disminuyendo la mortalidad según estudios retrospectivos o con modelos de cálculo. El objetivo fue comparar la mortalidad de pacientes internados con diagnóstico de COVID-19 según su vacunación. Métodos: Es tudio comparativo observacional longitudinal. Se incluyeron pacientes internados con COVID-19 del 17/12/21 al 23/02/2022 en el Hospital Nacional Prof. A Posadas y en el Hospital Interzonal General de Agudos Eva Perón. Resultados: Se analizaron 245 pacientes hallando una mortalidad total del 25.3%, 16.8% en aquellos con vacu nación completa (2 dosis o más y menos de 150 días desde la última) y 31.9% con vacunación incompleta (no vacunados, 1 o 2 dosis y más de 150 días desde la última) (p = 0.007), OR 2.31(IC95; 1.25-4.28). En aquellos con neumonía, la mortalidad fue del 32.2%, 22.2% con vacunación completa y 38% con vacunación incompleta (p = 0.048), OR 2.15(IC95; 1.01-4.58. La mortalidad se asoció a mayor edad (70 vs. 59 años; p < 0.001), sexo femenino (54.8% vs. 37.7%; p < 0.02) y enfermedad oncológica (27.4 vs. 14.8%; p = 0.02). El PESI score fue mayor en aquellos con vacunación incompleta (102.5 vs. 93, p = 0.05) y el SOFA score fue menor (2 vs. 3, p = 0.01). El número necesario a tratar (NNT) para evitar una muerte fue de 7 pacientes para el total de la muestra (IC95; 4-22) y 6 (IC95;3-106) para aquellos con neumonía. Discusión: Este trabajo constituye un punto de partida de nuevas investigaciones, contribuyendo a la concientización acerca de los efectos beneficiosos de la vacunación en profesionales y pacientes.
