Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

To preserve human health, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and current-use pesticides (CUPs) should be monitored in fatty tissues, including breast milk. Therefore, this study aimed to optimize sample preparation conditions using a 32 factorial design for the determination of POPs and CUPs by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry with negative chemical ionization (GC-NCI-MS). The method was validated for 57 POP and CUP compounds using hexane:acetone for extraction and clean-up by dispersive solid phase extraction (d-SPE) with Florisil®. The matrix effect was compensated by extracted analytical calibration. Method validation showed satisfactory results with limits of detection of 3 to 13 ng g-1 of fat. The method presented adequate accuracy (recoveries from 72 to 117%) and precision (relative standard deviation (RSD) ≤ 18%) and was applied to breast milk samples from Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil, wherein all samples contained at least one compound. With principal component analysis, it was possible to associate the pesticides detected with the city of origin of the samples and the number of pregnancies of nursing mothers. Additionally, the analytical method was effective for the determination of trace levels of POPs and CUPs in breast milk and can be applied in biomonitoring studies.

ABSTRACT One of the basic processes in any entity to guarantee its economic sustainability is the maintenance process. The objective of this article was to analyze the different tools applied for the diagnosis of maintenance management through a bibliographic review carried out in this field. For the study, the analysis and synthesis method as well as the cluster examination method were used. A total of 25 tools were investigated, showing the characteristics of each tool in the form of tables, applying descriptive statistical analysis. The bibliographic review provides researchers with the benefits and insufficiencies for the selection of tools that are best contextualized to their field of work, within maintenance, thus enhancing decision-making in function of the presented problems. In addition, a maintenance concept is proposed in close relation to its function and objective.

RESUMEN Uno de los procesos básicos en cualquier entidad para garantizar la sostenibilidad económica de la misma es el proceso de mantenimiento. El objetivo de este artículo fue analizar las diferentes herramientas aplicadas para el diagnóstico de la gestión del mantenimiento a través de una revisión bibliográfica realizada en este campo. Para el análisis se empleó el método de análisis y síntesis; así como el método de análisis de conglomerados. Se analizaron un total de 25 herramientas mostrándose las características de cada herramienta en forma de tablas aplicándose análisis de estadística descriptivas. El estudio bibliográfico proporciona a los investigadores los beneficios e insuficiencias para la selección de herramientas que mejor se contextualicen a su campo de trabajo, dentro del mantenimiento, potenciando así, la toma de decisiones ante los problemas presentados. Además, se propone un concepto de mantenimiento en estrecha relación con su función y objetivo.

ABSTRACT This essay works on the intertwining of time using the notions of experience, memory and disturbance from a socio-anthropological perspective to discuss the chronicity of living with HIV/Aids in childhood, adolescence and youth. Following the essay definitions, we propose a conceptual craftwork that offers another way of looking at stigma, precariousness, vulnerability, and chronicity. We invested in a perspective that faces the barriers of living produced by stigma, discussing to what extent chronicity can accentuate the precariousness that constitutes humans, although for many, due to their social location, it can mean greater precariousness and vulnerability; considering that, when one is a child, adolescent, and youth, this precariousness can lead to an impossibility in the flow of affections, in the fundamental daily exchanges within groups, and to a constant feeling of inadequacy.

RESUMO O presente ensaio trabalha nas dobras do tempo, acionando as noções de experiência, memória e perturbação, a partir da perspectiva socioantropológica, para discorrer acerca da cronicidade do viver com HIV/Aids na infância, adolescência e juventude. Seguindo as definições de ensaio, propôs-se um artesanato conceitual que ofereça outro arranjo de olhar sobre estigma, precariedade, vulnerabilidade e cronicidade. Apostou-se em um olhar que enfrente as barreiras do viver produzidas pelo estigma, discutindo em que medida a cronicidade pode acentuar a precariedade que constitui os humanos, mas que, para muitos, em virtude de sua localização social, pode significar maior precarização e vulnerabilização; considerando que, quando se é criança, adolescente e jovem, essa precarização pode levar a uma impossibilidade na circulação dos afetos, nas trocas cotidianas fundamentais dentro dos grupos, e a uma sensação constante de inadequação.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial activity of kefir fermented fruit by-products against strains of Alicyclobacillus spp., and determine their chemical characterization and antioxidant activity. According to the results, extracts fermented for a longer period (72 h) showed greater inhibition, and the extract of acerola by-product fermented for 72 h achieved the best results. For all strains, the Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was 0.78%, except for A. acidocaldarius subsp. rittmannii, (1.56%). The same applies to the Minimal Bactericidal Concentration (MBC), in which 1.56% of the extract was capable of inactivating A. cycloheptanicus and A. acidocaldarius. In addition, damages to the structure of the microorganisms caused by the extracts were detected by Scanning Electron Microscopy. Metabolite identification through liquid chromatography (UHPLC-Qtof-MS) showed that the fermented extracts had a greater number of compounds compared to the non-fermented ones, such as glucuronic, succinic and glutaric acids. In conclusion, the extracts of fruit by-products showed to have bioactive properties, such as antibacterial potential and antioxidant activity against the Alicyclobacillus strains tested in this study, not to mention the value added by the use of a food by-product.

Resumen Introducción: El distanciamiento social y la cuarentena han probado tener efectos negativos en la salud mental de las poblaciones, a saber: miedo, ansiedad, depresión y sintomatología de estrés postraumático. La resiliencia emerge como variable amortiguadora del impacto. El objetivo del estudio fue comparar el impacto psicológico del COVID-19 en varios países latinoamericanos. Método: se obtuvo una muestra de 1184 participantes de México, Cuba, Chile, Colombia y Guatemala; cuya edad osciló entre 18 y 83 años (M = 38.78, DT = 13.81). Se aplicó una encuesta sobre síntomas médicos asociados al COVID-19 con tres instrumentos para evaluar: (1) síntomas de depresión, ansiedad y estrés, (2) impacto del evento y (3) resiliencia. Resultados: Las personas más jóvenes, con mayor cantidad de síntomas médicos y con mayores puntajes de impacto del evento tienden a presentar mayor sintomatología depresiva, ansiosa y estrés, siendo el impacto del evento el predictor más determinante. La resiliencia fue el predictor protector contra la depresión, ansiedad y estrés. Conclusiones: Los resultados muestran las diferencias en la respuesta psicológica ante la pandemia del COVID-19 en cada país, y sugieren la necesidad del desarrollo de políticas públicas enfocadas en la prevención y la promoción de la salud integral ante emergencias sanitarias.

Abstract Introduction: Social distancing and quarantine have proven to have negative effects on the mental health of populations, namely fear, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress symptoms. Resilience emerges as a buffering variable for such impact. The objective of this study was to compare the psychological impact of COVID-19 in several Latin American countries. Method: A sample of 1184 participants from Mexico, Cuba, Chile, Colombia and Guatemala was obtained; whose age ranged from 18 to 83 years old (M = 38.78, SD = 13.81). A survey on medical symptoms associated with COVID-19 and three instruments to evaluate: (1) depression, anxiety and stress, (2) impact of the event and (3) resilience were administered. Results: Younger people, with more symptoms associated with COVID-19 and those who reported higher scores of impact of event tended to present greater depressive, anxious and stress symptomatology. The impact of the event was the most determinant predictor. Resilience was protective against the impact of event, depression, anxiety and stress. Conclusions: The results show the differences in the psychological response to COVID-19 in each country and suggesting the need to develop public policies focused on prevention and promotion of integral health when facing sanitary emergencies.

Abstract: Objective: To estimate the willingness to vaccinate against Covid-19 (acceptance) in the Mexican population and to identify socioeconomic factors associated with vaccine hesitancy and refusal. Materials and methods: We estimated the acceptance, refusal and hesitancy proportions using data from the Covid-19 National Health and Nutrition Survey conducted from August to November 2020. Factors associated with refusal and hesitancy were explored using multinomial logistic regression. Results: Covid-19 vaccination acceptance was 62.3%, refusal 28.2% and hesitancy 9.5%. Refusal and hesitancy were associated with being female, having older age, lower educational level, lower socioeconomic status and working in the informal sector. Conclusion: National campaigns to incentivize vaccine acceptance need to consider specific subgroups were the likelihood of hesitancy and refusal is high. In Mexico, refusal and hesitancy were higher in vulnerable groups, and people at a higher risk of Covid-19 complications and death.

Resumen: Objetivo: Estimar la aceptabilidad de la vacunación contra Covid-19 en la población mexicana e identificar factores socioeconómicos asociados con el rechazo o la duda. Material y métodos: Se estimó la proporción de aceptabilidad, rechazo y duda utilizando los datos de la Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición 2020 sobre Covid-19 levantada durante agosto y noviembre de 2020. Se exploraron los factores asociados con rechazo y duda mediante un modelo de regresión multinomial. Resultados: La aceptabilidad de la vacunación contra Covid-19 fue de 62.3%, el rechazo de 28.2% y la duda de 9.5%. El rechazo y la duda se asociaron con ser mujer, tener mayor edad, menor nivel de educación, menor nivel socioeconómico y trabajar en el sector informal. Conclusión: Las campañas para incentivar la aceptabilidad de la vacuna necesitan considerar los subgrupos específicos con una alta proporción de rechazo y duda. En México observamos un mayor rechazo y duda en grupos con mayor riesgo de complicaciones y muerte por Covid-19.

ABSTRACT Introduction: the nurse who works in the primary health care consultations assumes the responsibility of providing comprehensive care to the relative who takes care of oncological patients. Objective: to design a proposal of upgrading to improve the performance of the nurse in the comprehensive care to the family with an oncological patient. Materials and methods: a development research was conducted in the Faculty of Medical Sciences Dr. Juan Guiteras Gener, of Matanzas, during the school year 2018-2019. The sample was 23 nurses from the primary health care offices of the municipality of Matanzas. The documents that support their professional performance were analyzed. A survey was designed to identify learning needs and also an observation guide to characterize the performance of the nursing professional. Interviews were conducted with supervisors and managers. Results: the analysis of the surveys applied to the chosen sample and the observations made to the activities carried out at home, made it possible to determine the learning needs for the improvement of the comprehensive care to the families with oncological patients. Interviews with supervisors and managers confirmed the necessity of the proposal. Conclusions: a postgraduate course was designed for the improvement of nursing professionals’ performance, aimed to the comprehensive care to families with oncological patients in the primary health care.

RESUMEN Introducción: la enfermera que se desempeña en los consultorios de la Atención Primaria de Salud, asume la responsabilidad de propiciar una atención integral al familiar encargado del cuidado del enfermo oncológico. Objetivo: diseñar una propuesta de superación para el perfeccionamiento de la actuación de la enfermera en la atención integral a la familia con enfermo oncológico. Materiales y métodos: se efectuó una investigación de desarrollo en la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas de Matanzas Dr. Juan Guiteras Gener, durante el curso 2018-2019. Se utilizó una muestra de 23 enfermeras de los consultorios de la atención primaria del municipio de Matanzas. Se analizaron los documentos que avalan su desempeño profesional. Se diseñó una encuesta dirigida a la identificación de las necesidades de aprendizaje y una guía de observación para caracterizar el modo de actuación del profesional de Enfermería. Se aplicaron entrevistas a supervisoras y directivos. Resultados: el análisis de las encuestas aplicadas a la muestra seleccionada y las observaciones realizadas a las actividades en el hogar, permitieron detectar las necesidades de aprendizaje para el perfeccionamiento de la atención integral a la familia con enfermo oncológico. Las entrevistas realizadas a supervisoras y directivos corroboraron la necesidad de la propuesta. Conclusiones: se diseñó un curso de posgrado para el perfeccionamiento de la actuación de los profesionales de la Enfermería, relacionado con el cuidado integral a la familia con enfermos oncológicos en la Atención Primaria de Salud.

Objective: To analyze aspects related to positivity for schistosomiasis in an area of low prevalence in Brazil. Methods: Cross-sectional study, carried out in the first half of 2020, where proportion of positivity was analyzed according to the number of Kato-Katz slides, the diagnostic performance of the test and the creation of a positivity estimation factor from the data of the Information from the Schistosomiasis Surveillance and Control Program (SISPCE). Results: 2,088 slides from 348 individuals were analyzed, with proportion of positivity of 11.8%, 26.7% and 31.0% for 1, 4 and 6 slides analyzed, respectively. There was excellent agreement (Kappa = 0.91) between the reading of 4 and 6 slides. An underreporting of 2.1 times was estimated in the SISPCE data. Conclusion: Increasing the number of blades increased the positivity of Kato-Katz, which can contribute to maximize the control of the disease as a public health problem.

Objetivo: Analisar aspectos relacionados com a positividade para esquistossomose em área de baixa prevalência, no Brasil. Métodos: Estudo transversal, realizado no primeiro semestre de 2020, quando foram analisadas a proporção de positividade, em função do número de lâminas de Kato-Katz, o desempenho diagnóstico do teste e a estimação da positividade a partir dos dados do Sistema de Informação do Programa de Vigilância e Controle da Esquistossomose (SISPCE). Resultados: Foram analisadas 2.088 lâminas de 348 indivíduos, sendo a proporção de positividade de 11,8%, 26,7% e 31,0% para 1, 4 e 6 lâminas analisadas, respectivamente. Houve concordância excelente (índice Kappa = 0,91) na comparação entre as leituras de 4 e 6 lâminas. Foi estimada subnotificação de 2,1 vezes nos dados do SISPCE. Conclusão: Ampliar o número de lâminas aumentou a positividade do Kato-Katz, o que pode contribuir para maximizar o controle da doença enquanto problema de Saúde Pública.

Resumo Objetivo: Analisar aspectos relacionados com a positividade para esquistossomose em área de baixa prevalência, no Brasil. Métodos: Estudo transversal, realizado no primeiro semestre de 2020, quando foram analisadas a proporção de positividade, em função do número de lâminas de Kato-Katz, o desempenho diagnóstico do teste e a estimação da positividade a partir dos dados do Sistema de Informação do Programa de Vigilância e Controle da Esquistossomose (SISPCE). Resultados: Foram analisadas 2.088 lâminas de 348 indivíduos, sendo a proporção de positividade de 11,8%, 26,7% e 31,0% para 1, 4 e 6 lâminas analisadas, respectivamente. Houve concordância excelente (índice Kappa = 0,91) na comparação entre as leituras de 4 e 6 lâminas. Foi estimada subnotificação de 2,1 vezes nos dados do SISPCE. Conclusão: Ampliar o número de lâminas aumentou a positividade do Kato-Katz, o que pode contribuir para maximizar o controle da doença enquanto problema de Saúde Pública.

Abstract Objective: To analyze aspects related to schistosomiasis positivity in an area of low prevalence in Brazil. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, carried out in the first half of 2020, where we analyzed the proportion of positivity, according to the number of Kato-Katz slides, the diagnostic performance of the test and positivity estimates based on data from the Schistosomiasis Surveillance and Control Program Information System (SISPCE). Results: 2,088 slides from 348 individuals were analyzed, with proportion of positivity of 11.8%, 26.7% and 31.0% for 1, 4 and 6 slides analyzed, respectively. There was excellent agreement (Kappa = 0.91) between the readings of 4 and 6 slides. The SISPCE data was estimated to be underreported by up to 2.1 times. Conclusion: Increasing the number of slides increased Kato-Katz positivity, which can contribute to maximizing the control of the disease as a Public Health problem.

Resumen Objetivo: Analizar aspectos relacionados con la positividad para esquistosomiasis en área de baja prevalencia en Brasil. Métodos: Estudio transversal, realizado en el primer semestre de 2020, donde se analizó la proporción de positividad según el número de portaobjetos de Kato-Katz, el rendimiento diagnóstico de la prueba y la creación de un factor de estimación de positividad a partir de los datos del Sistema de Información del Programa de Vigilancia y Control de la Esquistosomiasis (SISPCE). Resultados: Se analizaron 2.088 láminas de 348 individuos, con proporción de positividad del 11,8%, 26,7% y 31,0% para 1, 4 y 6 láminas analizadas, respectivamente. Hubo una excelente concordancia (Kappa = 0,91) en la comparación entre la lectura de 4 y 6 láminas. Se estimó un subregistro de 2,1 veces en los datos del SISPCE. Conclusión: Aumentar el número de muestras aumentó la positividad de Kato-Katz, lo que puede contribuir a maximizar el control de la enfermedad como problema de Salud Pública.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Schistosomiasis, caused by infection from Schistosoma mansoni, is a disease that represents an important public health problem for Brazil, especially for states in the Northeast region. Thus, the aim of this study is to present a new epidemiological profile for the disease in a municipality with low prevalence in the state of Alagoas, Brazil. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted through a coproparasitological and malacological survey. A structured questionnaire was applied to the study participants to survey possible risk factors and a spatial analysis (kernel density) was used to measure the risk of infection. RESULTS: Of the 347 participants, 106 (30.5%) were infected by Schistosoma mansoni, most of them from the urban area of the municipality (68.9%; 73/106). A 3-fold risk of infection was found for individuals living in the urban area and a risk of 2.15 times for self-declared farmers. Biomphalaria glabrata and B. straminea were the species found in the municipality, but no animals were diagnosed as infected by the parasite. Spatial analysis showed a random distribution of vectors and human cases of the disease, and the formation of two clusters of human cases in the urban area was seen. CONCLUSIONS: A new epidemiological profile for schistosomiasis from S. mansoni infection was presented in a municipality of low endemicity: a high proportion of positive individuals in the urban area; presence of snails without positive diagnosis for S. mansoni infection; random distribution of vectors and human cases; and absence of association between classical risk factors and human infection.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da carga microbiana inicial, temperatura e tempo de contato na formação de biofilme de Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris em aço inoxidável e borracha natural de qualidade alimentar utilizando suco de laranja como meio de cultura. A baixa carga inicial de A. acidoterrestris (2 log UFC/mL) levou à formação de biofilme na superfície do aço inoxidável após 48 h de contato a 28 ºC e após 24 h a 45 ºC, e na superfície natural de borracha de qualidade alimentar após 48 h de contato nas duas temperaturas. A alta carga microbiana inicial (5 log UFC/mL) levou à formação de biofilme em aço inoxidável após 4 h de contato a 28 °C e 45 °C, enquanto o biofilme foi formado em borracha natural de qualidade alimentar após 8 h de contato a 28 °C e 4 h a 45 °C. A carga microbiana também afetou a presença de esporos no biofilme, o que foi observado em ambas as superfícies apenas com altas cargas iniciais de A. acidoterrestris.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the initial microbial load, temperature and contact time on the biofilm formation of Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris on stainless steel and natural food-grade rubber using orange juice as culture medium. The low initial load of A. acidoterrestris (2 log CFU/mL) led to biofilm formation on the stainless steel surface after 48 h of contact at 28 ºC and after 24 h at 45 ºC, and on natural food-grade rubber surface after 48 h of contact at both temperatures. The high initial microbial load (5 log CFU/mL) led to biofilm formation on stainless steel after 4 h of contact at 28 °C and 45 °C, while biofilm was formed on natural food-grade rubber after 8 h of contact at 28 °C and 4 h at 45 °C. The microbial load also affected the presence of spores in biofilm, which was observed on both surfaces only at high initial loads of A. acidoterrestris.
