ABSTRACT The identification of pod- and seed-related traits of soybean genotypes and their interaction with water uptake can be applied in breeding programs with a view to establishing cultivars developed for the production and maintenance of high-quality seeds. The objective was to evaluate the water uptake of pods and seeds of soybean cultivars with different lignin contents after different soaking periods. The experimental was arranged in a completely randomized, 7×10 factorial design, with four replications. The factors consisted of seven soybean cultivars and 10 soaking periods (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 24, 48 hours). The pods and seeds were grown in a greenhouse and harvested at the phenological growth stage R8 (at full maturation, when 95% of the pods had mature color). The following traits were evaluated: lignin content in pod and seed coat, moisture content, and rate of water uptake of pods and seeds. Soybean cultivars with pods with high lignin contents have a lower rate of water uptake. The lignin contents of the seed coats, within the chosen limits, did not affect the seed water uptake.

ABSTRACT. Seed coat characteristics may be related to seed quality and longevity, attracting the interest of breeding programs. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the water absorption parameters and storage tolerance of soybean seeds with contrasting seed coat characteristics. For this purpose, seeds of five soybean cultivars with different seed coat colors and lignin contents were used. Before storage, the seed coat lignin content, moisture content, water absorption rate in 11 hydration periods (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 24, 32, and 48 hours), hydration speed index, germination, viability, and seed vigor were determined. After six months of storage in a dry and cold chamber (at 11ºC and 54% relative humidity [RH]) and uncontrolled environment (at 25ºC and 71% RH), the seeds were evaluated for germination, viability, and vigor to quantify changes in their physiological quality during storage and relate them to the seeds water absorption parameters for the different cultivars. The seed coat lignin content is negatively correlated with the seeds water absorption parameters. Soybean cultivars have different storage tolerance levels. Seeds that absorb larger amounts of water have lower tolerance to deterioration related to temperature and relative humidity fluctuations that occur in storage under uncontrolled conditions, negatively affecting the physiological potential of seeds.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar estruturalmente as vagens e os tegumentos de cultivares de soja (Glycine max), bem com determinar a qualidade das sementes quando submetidas à deterioração por umidade em pré-colheita. Utilizou-se arranjo fatorial 7×3 – sete cultivares e três volumes de precipitações pluviais simuladas (0, 54 e 162 mm). A exposição à chuva foi simulada no estádio fenológico R8. Em seguida, as plantas foram levadas à casa de vegetação, onde foram mantidas até a coleta das vagens e das sementes. Após a coleta, realizaram-se as seguintes avaliações: teste de tetrazólio, teor de lignina nas vagens e nos tegumentos, e análise estrutural de vagens (espessura do exocarpo, do mesocarpo e do endocarpo) e tegumentos (espessura da epiderme, da hipoderme e das células parenquimatosas). Precipitações de 54 e 162 mm em pré-colheita reduzem a qualidade das sementes de soja; entretanto, a resposta à deterioração por umidade difere de acordo com a cultivar. A tolerância a todas as precipitações pluviais simuladas foi maior para BRSMT Pintado, BRS Jiripoca e M8210IPRO e menor para BRS 1010IPRO. Vagens com maior espessura do exocarpo, do mesocarpo e do endocarpo e elevados teores de lignina apresentam maior tolerância à deterioração por umidade e sementes com maior vigor e viabilidade. A espessura da hipoderme da testa de tegumentos está relacionada à tolerância à deterioração por umidade e à obtenção de sementes de elevada qualidade.

Abstract The objective of this work was to analyze structurally the pods and seed coats of soybean (Glycine max) cultivars, as well as to determine the quality of seeds when subjected to deterioration by weathering in pre-harvest. A 7×3 factorial arrangement was used – seven cultivars and three volumes of simulated rainfall (0, 54, and 162 mm). Exposure to rainfall was simulated in the R8 phenological stage. Then, the plants were taken to a greenhouse, where they were kept until the time of collection of pods and seeds. After collection, the following evaluations were carried out: tetrazolium test, lignin content in pods and seed coats, and structural analysis of pods (exocarp, mesocarp, and endocarp thickness) and seed coats (epidermis, hypodermis, and parenchymal-cell thickness). Pre-harvest rainfall of 54 and 162 mm reduces the quality of soybean seeds; however, the response to deterioration by weathering differs according to the cultivar. The tolerance to all simulated rainfall was greater for BRSMT Pintado, BRS Jiripoca, and M8210IPRO and lower for BRS 1010IPRO. Pods with a greater thickness of the exocarp, mesocarp, and endocarp and a high lignin content show greater resistance to weathering deterioration and seeds with greater vigor and viability. The thickness of the hypodermis of the testa is related to resistance to weathering deterioration and to the obtainment of high-quality seeds.

Resumo: Sementes de soja podem apresentar respostas diferenciadas à deterioração por umidade, em função das características intrínsecas do material genético e da intensidade e duração do período de precipitação pluvial. O objetivo foi avaliar o efeito da deterioração por umidade em pré-colheita sobre a qualidade e composição química de sementes de soja com diferentes teores de lignina na vagem e no tegumento. Foram avaliados a porcentagem de danos por umidade pelo teste de tetrazólio, teste de raios-X, teor de lignina na vagem e no tegumento, germinação, envelhecimento acelerado, emergência de plântulas, análise sanitária, teores de óleo, proteína e de clorofila. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 7×3 (sete cultivares e três volumes de precipitações pluviais: 0, 54 e 162 mm; simuladas quando 95% das vagens apresentavam coloração madura). A qualidade fisiológica e sanitária das sementes reduz com o aumento das precipitações pluviais em pré-colheita. Sementes oriundas de cultivares com maiores teores de lignina na vagem apresentam maior tolerância à deterioração por umidade em pré-colheita e proporcionam sementes de melhor qualidade fisiológica. O teor de óleo e proteína das sementes é reduzido conforme se aumenta as precipitações pluviais, em algumas cultivares. Plantas com maiores teores de lignina nas vagens produzem sementes com menor incidência do fungo Cercospora kikuchii e menor teor de clorofila quando associado a precipitações pluviais em pré-colheita.

Abstract: Soybean seeds may show different responses to weathering deterioration depending on the intrinsic characteristics of the genetic material and the intensity and duration of the rainfall period. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pre-harvest weathering deterioration on the quality and chemical composition of soybean seeds with different lignin contents in the pod and seed coat. The percentage of weathering damage was evaluated by the tetrazolium test, X-ray test, lignin content in the pod and seed coat, germination, accelerated aging, seedling emergence, seed health test, and oil, protein, and chlorophyll contents. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 7×3 factorial scheme, that is, seven cultivars and three rainfall volumes (0, 54, and 162 mm), simulated when 95% of the pods had a mature color. The physiological and sanitary quality of soybean seeds reduces with an increase in pre-harvest rainfall. Soybean seeds from cultivars with higher lignin contents in the pod present a higher tolerance to pre-harvest weathering deterioration and provide seeds of better physiological quality. Seed oil and protein content is reduced in some cultivars as rainfall increases. Plants with higher lignin contents in the pods produce seeds with a lower incidence of the fungus Cercospora kikuchii and lower chlorophyll content when associated with pre-harvest rainfall.

ABSTRACT Differences in seed storage tolerance between soybean cultivars have been frequently observed. Thus, identifying compounds found in them that may be related to these differences is necessary to support the selection of cultivars with seeds with better storage potential. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate changes in viability and vigor of soybean seeds during storage in two environments, relating them to antioxidant activity, production of reactive oxygen species, and metabolites of the phenylpropanoid pathway. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 4 × 5 factorial scheme (storage periods × cultivars). Cultivars with contrasting characteristics of lignin content, seed coat color, and isoflavone content in the seed were used, stored for six months in a cold and dry chamber and an uncontrolled environment. Every two months, viability and vigor, enzymatic activity (superoxide dismutase and catalase), and hydrogen peroxide content were evaluated. Storage in a cold and dry chamber maintains seed viability of cultivars A, C, and D; it is reduced in all cultivars in an uncontrolled environment. Seed vigor is reduced during storage. There is no association between the seeds’ physiological quality and the superoxide dismutase and catalase activities. The increase in the hydrogen peroxide content in the seed coat is an indicator of the reduction in the seed physiological quality when stored in an uncontrolled environment. The difference in deterioration tolerance during storage is associated with the lignin content in the seed coat.

RESUMO O tratamento de sementes com fungos do gênero Trichoderma spp. proporciona diversos benefícios, incluindo promoção de crescimento das plantas, tolerância a estresses e controle de fungos patogênicos. Entretanto, para evitar o uso de doses inadequadas e custos desnecessários, é fundamental a utilização destes na quantidade correta, todavia não há estudos que avaliem a sua aplicabilidade em sementes de trigo. Objetivou-se encontrar a dose mais eficiente de produtos a base de Trichoderma no tratamento de sementes para melhorar a qualidade fisiológica e sanitária das cultivares de trigo TBIO 'Toruk' e TBIO 'Sossego', além de comparar o desempenho de agentes biológicos e químicos. Os tratamentos biológicos utilizados foram: Trichoderma asperellum SF 04 e Trichoderma harzianum IBLF006, aplicados nas doses de zero (testemunha); 5x1011; 1x1012; 1,5x1012 e 2x1012 UFC (unidades formadoras de colônias) 100 kg-1 de sementes, e os químicos foram: carboxina + tiram e piraclostrobina + tiofanato metílico + fipronil. Em laboratório, conduziu-se testes de germinação, comprimento e massa de matéria seca de plântulas, blotter test e, em casa de vegetação, emergência, comprimento e massa de matéria seca da parte aérea de plântulas. Os tratamentos biológicos T. asperellum SF 04 e T. harzianum IBLF006 apresentam melhor eficiência para aplicação no tratamento de sementes de trigo na dose 2x1012 UFC 100 kg-1 de sementes. Comparando os produtos biológicos com os químicos, os dados indicam que ambas as opções têm potencial para serem utilizadas no manejo de doenças do trigo, além de promoverem o crescimento de plântulas, por meio do tratamento de sementes.

ABSTRACT Seed treatment with fungi of the genus Trichoderma spp. provides several benefits, including plant growth promotion, stress tolerance, and pathogenic fungi control. Moreover, to avoid inadequate doses and unnecessary costs, these treatments must be applied in proper amounts. However, no study has evaluated their applicability in wheat seeds. This study aimed to determine the most efficient dose of Trichoderma-based products applied as a seed treatment for improving the physiological and sanitary quality of the wheat cultivars TBIO ‘Toruk’ and TBIO ‘Sossego’, besides comparing the performance of biological and chemical agents. Two biological treatments (Trichoderma asperellum SF 04 and Trichoderma harzianum IBLF006) were applied at 0 (control), 5 × 10 11 , 1 × 10 12 , 1.5 × 10 12 , and 2 × 10 12 colony-forming units (CFU) 100 kg–1 seed. Two chemical treatments (carboxin + thiram and pyraclostrobin + thiophanate-methyl + fipronil) were applied at the manufacturers’ recommended doses. Seed germination, shoot and root lengths, seedling dry matter, and sanitary quality were analyzed under laboratory conditions, while seedling emergence, shoot length, and shoot dry matter were analyzed under greenhouse conditions. The optimal dose for wheat seed treatment with T. asperellum SF 04 and T. harzianum IBLF006 was 2 × 10 12 CFU 100 kg–1 seed. When comparing biological and chemical products, our findings indicate that both options are adequate for managing wheat diseases and providing seedling growth via seed treatment.

Resumo: O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as alterações na qualidade fisiológica de sementes de soja ao longo do período de armazenamento em dois ambientes e sua relação com metabólitos da rota dos fenilpropanóides. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4 x 8 (períodos de armazenamento x cultivares), com quatro repetições. Foram utilizadas sementes de cultivares com características contrastantes de teor de lignina, cor e presença de antocianina no tegumento e teor de isoflavona na semente, armazenadas durante seis meses em câmara fria e seca e em ambiente não controlado. Periodicamente, a cada dois meses, as sementes foram avaliadas quanto à germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, emergência de plântulas e tetrazólio. A qualidade fisiológica das sementes é reduzida ao longo do armazenamento, com maiores taxas de decréscimo no ambiente não controlado. Os metabólitos da rota dos fenilpropanóides estudados, especialmente a lignina, interferem no potencial de armazenamento das sementes. Cultivares com maiores teores de lignina apresentam maior potencial de armazenamento, principalmente em ambiente não controlado.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the physiological quality of soybean seeds throughout a storage period in two environments, and to evaluate how these changes are related to metabolites of the phenylpropanoid pathway. A completely randomized experimental design was used in a 4 × 8 factorial arrangement (storage periods × cultivars) with four replications. We used seeds from cultivars with contrasts in lignin content, color, and presence of anthocyanin in the seed coat, and isoflavone content in the seed. The seeds were kept for six months under cold and dry storage and in a non-controlled environment. Germination, first germination count, seedling emergence, and tetrazolium testing were performed on the seeds every two months. The physiological quality of the seeds declines during the storage period, with higher rates of decrease in the non-controlled environment. The metabolites of the phenylpropanoid pathway that were studied, especially lignin, affect seed storage potential. Cultivars with higher lignin content show greater storage potential, especially in a non-controlled environment.

Resumo: O aumento dos volumes de calda no tratamento industrial de sementes pode aumentar a deterioração e reduzir o potencial fisiológico das sementes, principalmente quando armazenadas em ambientes desfavoráveis. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de volumes de calda, obtidos pela combinação de diferentes produtos químicos, via tratamento industrial, sobre o potencial fisiológico de sementes de soja ao longo do armazenamento em diferentes ambientes. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 5 x 3, com quatro repetições. Os fatores foram cinco volumes de calda (0, 600, 1200, 1800 e 2400 mL.100 kg-1 de sementes), obtidos a partir da combinação de diferentes produtos comercialmente utilizados, e três períodos de armazenamento (0, 60 e 120 dias), avaliados separadamente em dois ambientes (armazém não controlado e câmara fria). As variáveis avaliadas foram: germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, emergência de plântulas em areia, índice de velocidade de emergência, comprimento de plântula (total, parte aérea e raiz) e massa seca (parte aérea e raiz). O potencial fisiológico de sementes de soja é reduzido com o aumento do volume de calda utilizado no tratamento industrial e com o prolongamento do período de armazenamento, no entanto, esse efeito é mitigado pelo armazenamento em condições controladas de câmara fria.

Abstract: The increase in spray volumes in industrial seed treatments may increase the deterioration and reduce the physiological potential of seeds, especially when stored in unfavorable environments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of spray volumes obtained by the combination of different chemical products, via industrial treatment, on the physiological potential of soybean seeds during storage in different environments. A completely randomized experimental design was used in a 5 × 3 factorial arrangement, with four replications. The factors were five spray volumes (0, 600, 1200, 1800 and 2400 mL.100 kg-1 of seeds), obtained from the combination of different products in commercial use, and three storage periods (0, 60 and 120 days), evaluated separately in two environments (storage without climate control and cold storage). The following variables were evaluated: germination, first germination count, seedling emergence in sand, emergence speed index, seedling length (total, shoot, and root) and dry matter (shoot and root). The physiological potential of soybean seeds is reduced by increasing the spray volume used in the industrial treatment and by prolonging the storage period. However, this effect is mitigated by the controlled conditions of cold storage.

RESUMO Na cultura do trigo, frequentemente, observa-se que o estabelecimento do número de plantas por área é inferior ao de sementes viáveis utilizadas, o que pode estar relacionado tanto a condições do ambiente quanto ao vigor de sementes. O objetivo foi avaliar o efeito do nível de vigor de sementes, em diferentes densidades de semeadura, sobre o crescimento, o desenvolvimento e o rendimento de grãos em cultivares de trigo. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em Londrina e Ponta Grossa, PR, Brasil, sob o delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 2 x 2 x 3, com quatro repetições. Foram avaliados dois níveis de vigor de sementes (alto e baixo), duas densidades de semeadura (200 e 400 sementes viáveis por m2) e três cultivares de trigo (BRS Sabiá, BRS Gaivota e BRS Gralha Azul). Para avaliação do crescimento e desenvolvimento foram realizadas coletas de plantas nos estádios fenológicos de desenvolvimento da plântula, alongamento do colmo, emborrachamento e emergência da inflorescência. As avaliações efetuadas foram: emergência de plântulas, altura e massa seca da parte aérea de plantas e produtividade de grãos. A densidade de semeadura de 200 sementes por m2 acarreta maior produção de massa seca da parte aérea por planta nos estádios de emborrachamento e emergência da inflorescência. Em Londrina, a cultivar BRS Sabiá e, em Ponta Grossa, a BRS Sabiá e a BRS Gralha Azul apresentam maiores produtividades de grãos. Sementes de alto vigor favorecem o estabelecimento do estande, o crescimento e o desenvolvimento das plantas nos estádios fenológicos iniciais e a produtividade de grãos de trigo.

ABSTRACT In wheat crops, it is often observed that the number of plants per area is lower than that of viable seeds used, which may be related to both environmental conditions and seed vigor. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of seed vigor level at different sowing densities on growth, development, and grain yield in wheat cultivars. The experiments were conducted in Londrina and Ponta Grossa, PR, Brazil, under a randomized block design in a 2 × 2 × 3 factorial scheme, with four replications. Two seed vigor levels (high and low), two sowing densities (200 and 400 viable seeds per m2), and three wheat cultivars (BRS Sabiá, BRS Gaivota, and BRS Gralha Azul) were assessed. In order to assess growth and development, plant samples were collected at the phenological stages of seedling growth, stem elongation, booting, and ear emergence. We assessed the emergence of seedlings, height and dry matter of plant shoot, and grain yield. The sowing density of 200 seeds per m2 led to a higher shoot dry matter production per plant at the stages booting and ear emergence. The cultivar BRS Sabiá presented the highest grain yield in Londrina, while BRS Sabiá and BRS Gralha Azul presented the highest grain yield in Ponta Grossa. High vigor seeds favor stand establishment, growth and development of plants at early phenological stages, and grain yield of wheat.

Resumo: Na cultura da soja, o tratamento industrial de sementes é amplamente realizado e tem propiciado o desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias, como a utilização de pó secante. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do tratamento industrial de sementes, com e sem a aplicação de pó secante, sobre o potencial fisiológico de sementes de soja. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4x2, com quatro repetições, sendo avaliados quatro tratamentos químicos de sementes: 1) testemunha, 2) carbendazim + thiram + tiametoxam, 3) carbendazim + thiram, 4) tiametoxam; todos na ausência e na presença de pó secante. As cultivares utilizadas foram a BRS 360 RR e a BRS 284, que foram analisadas separadamente. O potencial fisiológico das sementes foi determinado por meio das seguintes avaliações: germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, emergência de plântulas em areia, e comprimentos total, da parte aérea e da raiz das plântulas. As cultivares de soja respondem de forma diferenciada aos tratamentos químicos de sementes, quanto aos efeitos no potencial fisiológico. O pó secante resulta em problemas na velocidade de germinação das sementes da cultivar BRS 284. Na cultivar BRS 360 RR, o uso de pó secante associado ao tratamento com tiametoxam reduz o potencial fisiológico das sementes.

Abstract: In soybean crops, industrial seed treatment is widely adopted, and it has allowed the development of new technologies, such as the use of dry powders. This work aimed to evaluate the effect of the industrial treatment, with and without the additional application of dry powder, on the physiological potential of soybean seeds. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 4×2 factorial scheme, with four replications. Four chemical treatments were evaluated: 1) control, 2) carbendazim + thiram + thiamethoxam, 3) carbendazim + thiram, 4) thiamethoxam. Each trial was divided into one group that was treated and the other that remained untreated with the dry powder. The cultivars BRS 360 RR and BRS 284 were used and analyzed separately. The physiological potential of the seeds was determined by the following assessments: germination, first germination count, seedling emergence in sand, seedling total length, shoot length, and root length. Soybean cultivars respond differently to seed chemical treatments, regarding the effects on physiological potential. Using the dry powder results in problems in seed germination speed in the cultivar BRS 284. In the cultivar BRS 360 RR, the use of dry powder associated with thiamethoxam treatment reduces the physiological potential of the seeds.

Resumo: O objetivo foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes volumes de calda, via tratamento industrial, sobre a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de soja com diferentes níveis de vigor. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 2x5, com quatro repetições. Os fatores foram constituídos por sementes com dois níveis de vigor (alto e baixo) e cinco volumes de calda (0, 600, 1200, 1800 e 2400 mL. 100kg-1). Os produtos utilizados para a obtenção dos volumes foram: fungicida (carbendazin + thiram); inseticida (imidacloprido + tiodicarbe); nematicida (abamectina); micronutriente (cobalto, molibdênio e zinco); polímero (peridiam); bioestimulante (cinetina + ácido giberélico) e inoculante (Bradyrhizobium japonicum). As cultivares utilizadas foram BRS 360 RR e BRS 1010 IPRO. A qualidade fisiológica das sementes foi determinada pelas seguintes avaliações: germinação, primeira contagem do teste de germinação, emergência de plântulas em areia, índice de velocidade de emergência, comprimento total, de parte aérea e raiz de plântulas. Nos diferentes volumes de calda, as sementes de soja de alto vigor apresentam maior qualidade fisiológica em relação às sementes de baixo vigor. O aumento do volume de calda no tratamento de sementes reduz a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de soja de baixo vigor.

Abstract: The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of different spray volumes, via industrial treatment, on the physiological quality of soybean seeds with different levels of vigor. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2x5 factor scheme, with four replications. Factors consisted in two levels of seed vigor (high and low) and five spray volumes (0, 600, 1200, 1800 and 2400 mL. 100 kg-1). Products used to obtain the volumes were: fungicide (carbendazin + thiram); insecticide (imidacloprid + thiodicarb); nematicide (abamectin); micronutrients (cobalt, molybdenum and zinc); polymer (peridiam); biostimulants (kinetin + gibberellic acid) and inoculum (Bradyrhizobium japonicum). The used cultivars were BRS 360 RR and BRS 1010 IPRO. The physiological seed quality was determined by the following evaluations: germination, first count of the germination test, seedling emergence in sand, emergency speed index, total length of shoot and root of the seedlings. In the different spray volumes, high vigor soybean seeds have higher physiological quality than low vigor seeds. The increased spray volumes in seed treatments reduce the physiological quality of low vigor soybean seeds.

Resumo: A utilização de sementes de alta qualidade, adequadas práticas de manejo e escolha de genótipos promissores são estratégias para explorar o potencial de rendimento do trigo. O objetivo neste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do nível de vigor de sementes de trigo, submetidas a diferentes densidades de semeadura, sobre a emergência de plântulas, o perfilhamento e o desempenho produtivo da cultura. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em Londrina-PR e Ponta Grossa-PR, sob o delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 2x2x2, com quatro repetições. Foram avaliados dois níveis de vigor de sementes (alto e baixo), duas densidades de semeadura (200 e 400 sementes viáveis por m2) e duas cultivares de trigo (BRS Sabiá e CD 150). As avaliações efetuadas foram: emergência de plântulas, número de perfilhos, componentes do rendimento, produtividade de grãos e índice de colheita aparente. A utilização de sementes de alto vigor favorece o estabelecimento do estande de plantas e o desempenho produtivo do trigo, em ambos os locais. A densidade de semeadura de 400 sementes por m2 resulta em menor número de perfilhos por planta, em ambos os locais. A cultivar BRS Sabiá, em Ponta Grossa, apresenta maior produtividade de grãos.

Abstract: The use of high quality seeds, the appropriate management practices and the selection of promising genotypes are strategies to exploit the wheat yield potential. Thus, the goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of the vigor level of wheat seeds submitted to different sowing densities on seedling emergence, tillering and yield performance culture. The experiments were conducted in Londrina and Ponta Grossa, Paraná state, Brazil, with a completely randomized block design, in a 2x2x2 factorial scheme, with four replications. Two levels of seed vigor (high and low), two sowing densities (200 and 400 viable seeds per m2) and two wheat cultivars (BRS Sabiá and CD 150) were evaluated. The conducted tests were: seedling emergence, number of tillers, yield components, grain yield and apparent harvest index. The use of high vigor seeds helps the establishment of the plant stand and yield performance in both locations. The 400 seeds per m2 seedling density results in a lower number of tillers per plant in both locations. BRS Sabiá, in Ponta Grossa, has the highest grain yield.

RESUMO A alface é cultivada em todas as regiões brasileiras, porém há restrições ao seu cultivo em virtude de sua sensibilidade às condições adversas de temperatura, umidade do ar e disponibilidade de água. Diante disto, objetivou-se, com este experimento, avaliar a produção de quatro cultivares de alface americana, sob dois sistemas de cultivo. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas. As parcelas foram constituídas por dois sistemas de cultivo (túnel baixo de polietileno e campo aberto), e, as subparcelas por quatro cultivares de alface americana (Angelina, Rubette, Grandes Lagos 659 e Tainá), com quatro repetições. As características avaliadas foram: altura de plantas, diâmetro total da planta, diâmetro transversal da cabeça, comprimento de caule, diâmetro de caule, massa de matéria fresca de caule, número de folhas comerciais e não comerciais, massa de matéria fresca comercial e não comercial. Foi realizada análise de variância e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey. O túnel baixo favorece o crescimento e a produção de cultivares de alface americana, em relação ao campo aberto. O cultivar Rubette mostra crescimento e produção superiores aos demais cultivares avaliados, nos dois sistemas de cultivo.

ABSTRACT The lettuce is grown in all regions of Brazil, however, there are restrictions on its cultivation, due to its sensitivity to the adverse conditions of temperature, humidity and water availability. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the production of four lettuce cultivars under two cropping systems. The experimental design was randomized blocks in a split-plot scheme. The plots consisted of two cropping systems (low polyethylene tunnel and open field), and the sub plots of four lettuce cultivars (Angelina, Rubette, Grandes Lagos 659 and Tainá) with four replications. The characteristics evaluated were: plant height, overall diameter of the plant, transverse head diameter, stem length, stem diameter, stem fresh weight, number of commercial and non-commercial leaves, commercial and non-commercial fresh weight. Analysis of variance was performed and means were compared by Tukey test. The low tunnel favors the growth and production of lettuce cultivars in relation to open field. Cultivar Rubette shows growth and production superior to the other cultivars in both cropping systems.

Resumo Objetivou-se nesse estudo realizar a descrição de frutos e sementes e do processo de germinação de rosa do deserto, a partir de dois anos de observações. Os frutos e as sementes foram caracterizados com base no comprimento, diâmetro e número de sementes por fruto; também, descreveu-se a estrutura interna das sementes e o processo de germinação. Realizaram-se testes de germinação às temperaturas de 25 e 30 ºC, determinando-se a porcentagem e índice de velocidade de germinação. As sementes colhidas em 2013 foram armazenadas por 12 meses e submetidas a novo teste de germinação. Paralelo a esses testes determinou-se a curva de embebição das sementes em substrato sobre e entre papel às temperaturas de 15, 20, 25 e 30 ºC. Os frutos e as sementes apresentaram comprimentos e diâmetros semelhantes nos dois anos de observações. As sementes podem ser armazenadas por até 12 meses sem perdas na viabilidade e as temperaturas de 25 e 30 ºC são adequadas para realizar o teste de germinação dessa espécie. A curva de absorção de água das sementes de rosa do deserto segue um padrão trifásico de embebição.

This study has aimed to carry out the description of fruits and seeds and germination process of desert rose, from two years of observations. The fruits and seeds were characterized based on length, diameter and number of seeds per fruit. The seeds internal structure and germinating process were also described. Germination test was performed at 25 and 30 °C temperatures, determining the germination percentage and germination speed index. Seeds harvested in 2013 were stored for 12 months and submitted to a new germination test. Parallel to these tests, the seeds imbibition curve was determined in substrates over and between sheets of paper at 15, 20, 25 and 30 °C temperatures. The fruits and seeds had similar lengths and diameters in both years of observations. The seeds can be stored for up to 12 months without loss in viability and temperatures of 25 and 30 °C are suitable for performing the germination test of this species. The water absorption curve of desert rose seeds follows a triphasic pattern of soaking.

<title>RESUMO</title><p>Objetivou-se no trabalho avaliar a qualidade fisiológica de lotes de sementes de cultivares de feijão do tipo carioca ao longo do armazenamento em diferentes ambientes. O ensaio foi desenvolvido na Universidade Estadual de Londrina sob delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições, em esquema fatorial 3 x 2 x 4 sendo três lotes de cultivares de feijão carioca (lote 1: Carioca Precoce, lote 2: IAC Carioca Tibatã e lote 3: IAC Carioca), dois ambientes de armazenamento (ambiente natural e câmara seca) e quatro épocas de armazenamento (0, 6, 12 e 18 meses). A qualidade das sementes foi avaliada pelos seguintes testes: teor de água, primeira contagem do teste de germinação, germinação, envelhecimento acelerado, condutividade elétrica e emergência de plântulas em campo. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância, comparação de médias pelo teste de Tukey a 0,05 de probabilidade e análise de regressão. Sementes de feijão do lote 1 (cultivar Carioca Precoce) e lote 3 (IAC Carioca) apresentam melhor qualidade fisiológica em relação ao lote 2 (IAC Carioca Tibatã). A qualidade fisiológica das sementes de feijão carioca é reduzida durante o armazenamento para todos os lotes, porém com taxas mais acentuadas sob condições não controladas de temperatura e umidade.</p>

<title>ABSTRACT</title><p>The aim of the study was to evaluate the physiologic quality of lots of seeds of bean cultivars of carioca during storage in different environments. The study was conducted at the State University of Londrina, in a completely randomized design with four replications in a 3 x 2 x 4 factorial design, with three lots of cultivars of common bean (lot 1: Carioca Prococe, lot 2: IAC Carioca Tibatã and lot 3: IAC Carioca), two storage environment (natural environment and dry chamber) and four storage times (0, 6, 12, and 18 months). Seed quality was evaluated by the following tests: water content, first count of germination, germination, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity and seedling emergence in the field test. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and comparisons of means by Tukey test at 0.05 probability and regression analysis. Seeds of beans of the lot 1 (Carioca Precoce) and lot 3 (IAC Carioca) had better physiologic quality against lot 2 (IAC Carioca Tibatã). The physiologic quality of seeds of beans is reduced during storage in all lots, but with steeper rates under uncontrolled temperature and humidity conditions.</p>
