The use of conducting polymers as coating layers for the protection of surfaces against corrosion represents an important topic for investigation, as reported in the literature. In this work, polypyrrole/Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4_NPs/PPy) hybrid nanocomposites (HN) were incorporated as anticorrosive additives in an epoxy paint to protect SAE 1010 carbon steel from corrosion. The HN particles were obtained by chemical polymerization of pyrrole in an aqueous solution in the presence of Fe3O4_NPs and were characterized by infrared absorption spectrophotometry, dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used in the analysis of the electrochemical response of the coated surface with and without HN. DLS data showed that the Fe3O4_NPs and Fe3O4_NPs/PPy obtained in solution present average diameters of (19.7 ± 9.6) nm and (63.5 ± 27.7) nm, respectively. TEM images showed Fe3O4_NPs with smaller sizes (10 nm - 30 nm), and that the HN had diameters smaller than 100 nm, consisting of Fe3O4 cores coated with polypyrrole. EIS measurements have shown that the addition of HN to the epoxy paint could improve the efficiency of the anticorrosive coating when compared to the original epoxy paint prepared without any corrosion inhibitor.

RESUMO O sulfato de magnésio (SM) e o dioctil-sulfossuccinato de sódio (DSS) são drogas laxativas frequentemente utilizadas no tratamento da compactação. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar os efeitos do SM e do DSS na hidratação e eliminação fecal, e na hidratação sistêmica de cavalos saudáveis. Cinco cavalos receberam três tratamentos, com intervalo de 21 dias. O tratamento 1 consistiu na administração de quatro litros de água morna; o tratamento 2: administração de quatro litros de água morna associada a 1g/kg de SM; e o tratamento 3: administração de quatro litros de água morna associada a 20mg/kg de DSS. Foram realizados exames físicos gerais e específicos do trato digestivo, hematócrito e proteína plasmática total, ultrassonografia abdominal e mensuração da quantidade e hidratação das fezes antes e após seis, 12, 24, 36 e 48 horas dos tratamentos. Não foram observados efeitos adversos. A administração de ambos os laxantes promoveu maior produção fecal e hidratação, sem resultar em desidratação sistêmica, entretanto não houve diferença entre os tratamentos. A ausência de efeitos adversos do DSS demonstra a segurança de seu uso como medicamento laxante na dose de 20mg/kg. São necessários estudos que comparem o efeito dos laxantes em equinos portadores de compactação de cólon.

ABSTRACT Magnesium sulphate (MS) and dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate (DSS) are laxative drugs frequently used for the treatment of impactions. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of MS and DSS in fecal hydration, output and systemic hydration in healthy horses. Five healthy horses received 3 treatments with a 21-day interval. Treatment 1 was performed with administration of 4 liters of warm water; treatment 2: administration of 4 liters of warm water associated with 1g/kg of MS; and treatment 3: administration of 4 liters of warm water associated with 20mg/kg DSS. General and specific physical examination of the digestive system were performed, alongside with packed cell volume and total plasma protein measurement, abdominal ultrasonography and quantification of the amount and hydration of feces, before and 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours after the treatments. No adverse effects were observed. The administration of laxatives promoted greater fecal output and hydration without resulting in systemic dehydration, yet no differences were observed between treatments. The absence of adverse effects of DSS demonstrates the safety of its use as a laxative drug at a dose of 20mg/kg. Studies comparing the effects of the laxative drugs in horses with large colon impaction are needed.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos da administração do psyllium (PSY) e da carboximetilcelulose (CMC) sobre a eliminação fecal de areia em equinos com sablose assintomática. Oito equinos com confirmação radiográfica de sablose assintomática foram divididos em dois grupos (grupo CMC e grupo PSY). O estudo foi realizado em duas fases, com intervalo de sete dias. Na fase 1, todos os animais receberam 8L de água; na fase 2, o grupo CMC recebeu 8L de água + 1g/kg de CMC e o grupo PSY recebeu 8L de água + 1g/kg de PSY. Antes da administração de cada solução e após seis, 12, 24, 36 e 48 horas, foram realizados exame físico e ultrassonografia abdominal. Todas as fezes eliminadas em 72 horas foram avaliadas para quantificar a eliminação de areia (g/kg de fezes). Antes da fase 1 e após 72 horas das fases 1 e 2, o exame radiográfico foi realizado para quantificar o escore de acúmulo de areia. Houve maior eliminação de areia após a administração de água em comparação com a administração de CMC, e não se observou diferença entre a CMC e o PSY. Uma redução significativa nos escores radiográficos de acúmulo de areia foi observada após a administração de água, bem como a manutenção dos escores após a administração da CMC e do PSY. Com base na produção de areia e no escore radiográfico, este estudo sugere que a remoção do ambiente arenoso, impedindo a reingestão de areia, é uma medida eficaz para a eliminação da areia do cólon de cavalos com acúmulos de areia assintomáticos.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Psyllium (PSY) and Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) administration on fecal elimination of sand in horses with asymptomatic sand accumulations. Eight horses were selected from sandy areas and randomly divided into 2 groups of four animals. The subjects were treated either with CMC or PSY. The presence of intestinal sand was confirmed through radiography and glove sedimentation test. The study was performed in two phases, with a 7-day interval. In phase I, all the animals received 8 liters of warm water; in phase II, the CMC group received 8 liters of water + 1g/kg of CMC, whereas the PSY group received 8 liters of water + 1g/kg of PSY. All administrations were performed through nasogastric intubation and fractionated in 2 equal volume administrations with an interval of two hours. General and specific physical examination of the digestive system were performed in conjunction with abdominal ultrasonography before the administrations and after 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours, aiming to evaluate intestinal motility and presence of sand. All the feces eliminated by the animals within the 72 hours following the administrations were quantified, diluted and sedimented in order to calculate the sand output (g/kg of feces). All the animals were also subjected to radiographic examination to quantify sand accumulation prior to phase I and after 72 hours of phases I and II. No adverse effects were observed after the treatments. It was possible to notice higher sand elimination in both groups during the phase I, whereas no difference was observed in sand elimination rates between the groups in phase II. The radiographic scores presented differences between the initial timepoint and 72h in phases I and II for both groups. Based on the sand elimination rates and radiographic score, this study demonstrated that sand output was greater after administration of water alone, compared to CMC and Psyllium, leading to the inference that removal of the sandy environment and prevention of sand re-ingestion are effective measures for the elimination of sand from the colon of horses with asymptomatic sand accumulations.

RESUMO: A melancia é uma das olerícolas mais importantes do Brasil, situando o país entre os maiores produtores mundiais. Os vírus se destacam como agentes de doenças prejudiciais, que podem reduzir drasticamente a produção de frutos. Plantas daninhas presentes em campos cultivados também podem interferir na produção de hortaliças, atuando como reservatórios de vírus. O presente estudo teve como objetivo determinar a ocorrência de vírus em plantas daninhas nas principais regiões produtoras de melancia do estado de Tocantins. A identificação de vírus (em geral: os potyvírus Watermelon mosaic virus - WMV, Papaya ringspot virus - type watermelon - PRSV-W, e Zucchini yellow mosaic virus - ZYMV; o cucumovírus Cucumber mosaic virus - CMV e o orthotospovírus Zucchini lethal chlorosis virus - ZLCV) foi realizada por meio de testes serológicos e confirmada por RT-PCR. Os resultados sorológicos e moleculares indicaram que as espécies Amaranthus spinosus, Nicandra physaloides, Physalis angulata e Heliotropium indicum estavam infectadas com pelo menos uma espécie viral. A maior taxa de infecção foi representada por ZYMV (52,7%), seguido por PRSV-W (22,2%), CMV, WMV e ZLCV com a mesma taxa de infecção (8,3%). A espécie Physalis angulata, na qual foram detectadas todas as cinco espécies virais, representou 50% do total de plantas infectadas. As maiores porcentagens de infecção viral em plantas daninhas, 50% e 44,4% foram encontradas em amostras coletadas em Lagoa da Confusão e Formoso do Araguaia, respectivamente. Os resultados de ocorrência e distribuição de vírus infectando plantas daninhas em áreas cultivadas com melancia no estado de Tocantins geram informações importantes sobre o papel destas plantas como reservatórios de vírus em campos cultivados com melancia, bem como contribui para o conhecimento da epidemiologia dessas doenças de modo a propiciar o manejo adequado de plantas daninhas e a disseminação secundária desses vírus por meio de insetos vetores.

ABSTRACT: Watermelon is one of the most important vegetable crops in Brazil, which is grouped among the greatest producers worldwide. Viruses stand out among the most damaging disease agents, which can drastically reduce fruit production. In this context, weeds present in the field can also interfere in crop production, acting as reservoirs for viruses. Thus, this study aimed to investigate virus occurrence in weeds at the main watermelon-growing regions in the State of Tocantins. Viruses identification (e.g. potyviruses: Watermelon mosaic virus - WMV; Papaya ring spot virus - type watermelon -PRSV-W; Zucchini yellow mosaic virus- ZYMV; the cucumovirus Cucumber mosaic virus - CMV, and the orthotospovirus Zucchini lethal chlorosis virus - ZLCV) infecting weeds was performed by serology and confirmed by RT-PCR tests. Serological and molecular test results indicate that Amaranthus spinosus, Nicandra physaloides, Physalis angulata and Heliotropium indicum were infected by at least one virus species. The highest infection rate was represented by ZYMV (52.7%), followed by PRSV-W (22.2%); CMV, WMV, and ZLCV that showed the same infection rate (8.3%) each. Plants of P. angulata were infected by all five viruses, singly or in mixed infection, and represented 50% of the total number of infected samples. The highest virus infection rates, 50% and 44.4%, occurred in weeds collected at Lagoa da Confusão and Formoso do Araguaia, respectively. The results on occurrence and distribution of viruses infecting weeds in watermelon commercial plantations in the State of Tocantins provide important information about the role of weeds as virus reservoirs contribute to the knowledge of the epidemiology of these diseases, and enable a proper weed management aiming at reducing the secondary spreading control of viruses by insect vectors.

Quarenta e três ovelhas foram distribuídas em quatro tratamentos em um delineamento de blocos casualizados. Os tratamentos consistiram no fornecimento de dietas de flushing, formuladas com farelo de soja (FFS) ou com glúten de milho e farelo de algodão (FGM+FA) por 28 dias antes da ovulação, seguido pelo fornecimento de dietas de flushing ou de uma dieta de mantença (DM) durante 28 dias após a ovulação: T1 - FFS antes e após a ovulação (n=12); T2 - FFS antes da ovulação e DM após (n=11); T3 - FGM+FA antes e após a ovulação (n=10); T4 - FGM+FA antes da ovulação e DM após (n=10). O ganho de peso e o peso final não diferiram (P>0,05) entre os animais dos tratamentos. O ECC final foi maior (P<0,05) nas ovelhas do tratamento T3 do que nas do tratamento T2. A concentração de N-ureico foi maior (P<0,05) nas ovelhas dos tratamentos T1 e T3 do que naquelas dos tratamentos T2 e T4. A taxa de gestação e a prolificidade não diferiram (P>0,05) entre os animais. As dietas de flushing antes da ovulação, seguidas pelo fornecimento destas mesmas dietas ou de uma dieta de mantença após a ovulação, não alteraram a taxa de gestação e a prolificidade.

Forty-tree ewes were assigned to four treatments in a randomized block design. The treatments consisted of two flushing diets, composed of soybean meal (SMF) or corn gluten and cottonseed meal (CG+CMF) furnished for 28 days before ovulation, and feeding with flushing diets or a maintenance diet (MD) for 28 days after ovulation: T1 - (SMF) before and after ovulation (n=12); T2 - SMF before ovulation and a MD after (n=11); T3 - CG+CMF before and after ovulation (n=10); T4 - CG+CMF before ovulation and MD after (n=10). The gain in BW and the final BW did not differ (P>0,05) between treatments. The final BC was higher (P>0,05) in ewes in T3 treatment than in those in treatment T2. The urea N concentration was higher (P<0,05) in ewes in treatments T1 and T3 than those in treatments T2 and T4. The pregnancy rate and prolificacy did not differ (P>0,05) between treatments. The flushing diets before ovulation and feeding with this same diet or a maintenance diet after ovulation did not alter the pregnancy rate and prolificacy.

RESUMO A pinta preta do tomateiro é uma das principais doenças da cultura. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar 49 subamostras de tomateiro do Banco de Germoplasma de Hortaliças da Universidade Federal de Viçosa (BGH-UFV) quanto à pinta preta. O experimento ocorreu em Viçosa, MG, entre dezembro de 2007 e abril de 2008. Utilizou-se delineamento em blocos casualizados com três repetições e as testemunhas Débora, Fanny, Santa Clara e IPA-6. Realizaram-se cinco avaliações com base na severidade da doença. Com os valores de severidade calculou-se a área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AACPD), possibilitando uma melhor visualização dos resultados. Foi realizada a análise de variância, seguido do agrupamento das médias de AACPD pelo teste de Scott-Knott, a 5% de significância. As subamostras BGH-2109, BGH-2110, BGH-2115, BGH-2122, BGH-2134, BGH-2135 e BGH-2142 apresentaram menor média de AACPD em relação às testemunhas, podendo ser utilizadas em futuros programas de melhoramento.

ABSTRACT Tomato early blight is one of the most important diseases of this crop. The aim of this study was to characterize 49 tomato sub-samples of the Vegetable Germoplasm Bank of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (BGH-UFV) for early blight. The assay was carried out in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, between December 2007 and April 2008. The experimental design consisted of a randomized block with three replications and the controls Débora, Fanny, Santa Clara and Ipa-6. There were 5 evaluationsbased on the disease severity. With the severity values, the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was calculated, enabling a better visualization of the results. Variance analysis was performed, followed by the grouping of the AUDPC averages by the Scott-Knott test at the 5% significance level. The sub-samples BGH-2109, BGH-2110, BGH-2115, BGH-2122, BGH-2134, BGH-2135 and BGH-2142 had a lower AUDPC average in relation to the controls, and could be used in future breeding programs.
