Abstract Microbial therapeutic enzymes are the protagonists in the pharmacological treatment of different human diseases. The intrinsic enzymatic characteristics, such as high affinity and specificity to the corresponding substrate, enable effective therapies, with minimal adverse effects and complete remission. However, immunogenicity, short half-life, low enzymatic yield, and low selectivity regarding available enzyme drugs are currently the main obstacles to their development and the broad adherence to therapeutic protocols. By harboring adapted and still unexplored microbial life, environments of extreme conditions, such as Antarctica, become especially important in the prospecting and development of new enzymatic compounds that present higher yields and the possibility of genetic improvement. Antarctic microorganisms have adaptation mechanisms, such as more fluid cell membranes, production of antifreeze proteins and enzymes with more malleable structures, more robust, stable, selective catalytic sites for their respective substrates, and high antioxidant capacity. In this context, this review aims to explore enzymes synthesized by bacteria and fungi from Antarctica as potential drug producers, capable of providing therapeutic efficacy, less adverse effects, and lower production costs with highlight to L-Asparaginase, collagenase, superoxide dismutase and ribonucleases. In addition, this review highlights the unique biotechnological profile of these Antarctic extremophile microorganisms.

Resumo Em ambientes aquáticos, a construção de barragens é considerada uma das principais ameaças para as espécies de peixes, atuando como filtro ambiental para determinados traços funcionais. Assim, embora exista certa previsibilidade na composição dos traços funcionais em reservatórios, é hipotetizado que os filtros ambientais impostos pelos processos evolutivos, ligados as características das bacias, são determinantes para a composição funcional dos traços nos reservatórios. Para isso realizamos uma PCoA utilizando a matriz de composição de traços funcionais dos reservatórios. Utilizamos a PERMANOVA para testar a diferença da composição funcional entre as bacias. Realizamos o mesmo processo para a matriz de composição de espécies para comparar os padrões. Foi possível observar que a bacia hidrográfica é um fator determinante para a estruturação funcional da assembleia de peixe em reservatórios. Quando comparadas, a estrutura funcional e taxonômica, ambas seguem o mesmo padrão, embora funcionalmente os ambientes tendem a ser mais semelhantes. Esses resultados reforçam a ideia de que reservatórios atuam como filtros para determinados traços funcionais (e.g., relacionados à reprodução, alimentação e uso de habitat), embora exista uma grande influência dos processos evolutivos ligados a característica da bacia e da origem da província ictiofaunística.

Abstract In aquatic environments, dams are considered one of the main threats to fish species, acting as an environmental filter for certain functional traits. Although there is some predictability in the composition of the functional traits in reservoirs, it is hypothesized that the environmental filters imposed by evolutionary processes, linked to the characteristics of the basins, are determinant for the functional composition of the traits in reservoirs. For this we performed a PCoA using the functional traits composition matrix of the reservoirs. We used PERMANOVA to test the difference in functional composition between basins. We performed the same process for the species composition matrix to compare the patterns. In this study, there were taxonomic and functional differences among reservoirs inserted in different basins. It was observed that the basin is a determining factor for the functional structure of fish assemblage in reservoirs. When compared, functional and taxonomic structures follow the same pattern, although functionally the reservoir tends to be more similar. These results reinforce the idea that reservoirs act as filters for functional traits (e.g., related with reproduction, feeding and habitat use), although there is a great influence of evolutionary processes related to the basin’s characteristics and origin of the ichthyofaunistic province.

Resumo As atividades de mineração têm impactado significativamente a ictiofauna de água doce Neotropical, a mais diversa do mundo. Porém, nenhum estudo sistematizou o conhecimento sobre o assunto. Nesta revisão, reunimos informações sobre os principais impactos da mineração de petróleo, ouro, ferro, cobre, e bauxita sobre os ecossistemas aquáticos, com ênfase nos peixes de água doce Neotropicais. As informações obtidas mostram que as atividades de mineração geram diferentes distúrbios, principalmente por meio de petróleo bruto, metais e outros poluentes, erosão e assoreamento, desmatamento e construção de estradas. A mineração resultou em perda direta e indireta de diversidade de peixes de vários corpos d’água Neotropicais. Os impactos negativos sobre a ictiofauna podem alterar a estrutura das comunidades, comprometer cadeias alimentares inteiras, bem como degradar os serviços ecossistêmicos fornecidos pelos peixes de água doce. Particularmente importante é que as atividades de mineração (legais e ilegais) são generalizadas na região Neotropical, e frequentemente estão localizadas dentro ou perto de áreas protegidas. Ações de prevenção e mitigação de impactos, como planos de fiscalização, monitoramento, manejo e restauração, têm sido precárias ou ausentes. Além disso, há forte pressão política para expandir a mineração; se – ou quando – isso acontecer, aumentará o potencial da atividade em diminuir ainda mais a diversidade de peixes de água doce Neotropicais.

Abstract Mining activities have significantly affected the Neotropical freshwater ichthyofauna, the most diverse in the world. However, no study has systematized knowledge on the subject. In this review, we assembled information on the main impacts of mining of crude oil, gold, iron, copper, and bauxite on aquatic ecosystems, emphasizing Neotropical freshwater fishes. The information obtained shows that mining activities generate several different disturbances, mainly via input of crude oil, metals and other pollutants, erosion and siltation, deforestation, and road construction. Mining has resulted in direct and indirect losses of fish diversity in several Neotropical waterbodies. The negative impacts on the ichthyofauna may change the structure of communities, compromise entire food chains, and erode ecosystem services provided by freshwater fishes. Particularly noteworthy is that mining activities (legal and illegal) are widespread in the Neotropics, and often located within or near protected areas. Actions to prevent and mitigate impacts, such as inspection, monitoring, management, and restoration plans, have been cursory or absent. In addition, there is strong political pressure to expand mining; if – or when – this happens, it will increase the potential of the activity to further diminish the diversity of Neotropical freshwater fishes.

Resumo A introdução de predadores não-nativos tem gerado grande preocupação, mas seus impactos sobre a geração de funções ecossistêmicas permanecem pouco investigados. O presente estudo investigou como mudanças na diversidade de peixes, associadas com a invasão de Cichla kelberi, afetaram funções ecossistêmicas geradas por populações de peixes. As assembleias de peixes foram amostradas em bancos de macrófitas em um grande reservatório Neotropical durante um período de cinco anos, antes e depois da introdução do predador. Um conjunto de funções ecossistêmicas (26 trait-states) foi atribuído a cada espécie de peixe, e examinamos como as funções se comportaram depois da invasão. Foram coletados 577 peixes pertencentes a 25 espécies. Registramos declínio significativo da riqueza de espécies, biomassa total e biomassa das principais espécies ao longo dos períodos. A biomassa das funções ecossistêmicas mudou significativamente ao longo do tempo, e a maioria dos trait-states declinou. Poucos trait-states foram perdidos, mas todas as funções tiveram pelo menos um trait-state reduzido em mais de 85%. Uma análise de modelos nulos mostrou que as mudanças nas funções não foram impulsionadas pela identidade das espécies, enquanto que a riqueza de espécies correlacionou positivamente com a biomassa total e com a maioria das funções, sugerindo que a perda de espécies e biomassa impulsionou as mudanças observadas nas funções ecossistêmicas. Nosso estudo apresenta evidências de que a desestruturação da comunidade, associada com a invasão de C. kelberi, se traduziu no declínio de várias funções ecossistêmicas, afetando a mobilização e transferência de energia.

Abstract The introduction of non-native predators is a matter of great concern, but their impacts on ecosystem functions remain poorly understood. We investigated how changes in fish diversity following the invasion of Cichla kelberi affected ecosystem functions generated by fish populations. Fish assemblages were sampled in macrophyte patches in a Neotropical impoundment over a 5-year period, before and after the introduction of the predator. We assigned seven ecosystem functions (26 trait-states) to each fish species, and examined how these functions behaved after the invasion. We collected 577 fish belonging to 25 species. Species richness, fish biomass and main species declined significantly over periods. The biomass of ecosystem functions changed significantly over time, and most trait-states declined. Few trait-states were lost, but all functions had at least one trait-state reduced by more than 85%. A null model analysis showed that changes in functions were not driven by species identities, while species richness correlated positively with total biomass and with most functions, suggesting that the loss of taxa and biomass drove observed changes in ecosystem functions. Our study provided evidence that community disassembly associated with the invasion of C. kelberi translated to the decline of several ecosystem functions, affecting energy mobilization and transference.

Resumo Relações genéticas e filogenéticas de sete espécies de piranhas dos gêneros Serrasalmus e Pygocentrus das bacias hidrográficas Paraná-Paraguai, São Francisco e Tocantins foram avaliadas com base em sequências parciais dos genes mitocondriais Citocromo b e Citocromo c Oxidase I. Foram realizadas análises filogenéticas de Máxima Verossimilhança e de inferência Bayesiana. Os resultados indicaram, em geral, maior similaridade genética entre as duas espécies de Pygocentrus (P. nattereri e P. piraya), entre Serrasalmus rhombeus e S. marginatus e entre S. maculatus, S. brandtii e S. eigenmanni. Pygocentrus nattereri, S. rhombeus e S. maculatus revelaram ter alta variabilidade genética intraespecífica. Essas espécies têm, cada uma, pelo menos duas linhagens mitocondriais que, atualmente, ocorrem em simpatria (S. rhombeus) ou alopatria (P. nattereri e S. maculatus). Análises de delimitação de espécies e os altos valores de distância genética observados entre as populações de S. rhombeus e de S. maculatus indicam que cada espécie pode, na verdade, corresponder a um complexo de espécies crípticas. A condição não-monofilética de S. rhombeus e S. maculatus reforça essa hipótese. A distribuição geográfica e o padrão de diferenciação genética observados para as espécies de piranhas analisadas são discutidos com relação aos eventos geológicos e hidrológicos que ocorreram nas bacias hidrográficas.

Abstract Genetic and phylogenetic relationships among seven piranha species of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus from the Paraná-Paraguay, São Francisco and Tocantins River basins were evaluated in the present study by partial sequences of two mitochondrial genes, Cytochrome b and Cytochrome c Oxidase I. Phylogenetic analysis of Maximum-Likelihood and Bayesian inference were performed. Results indicated, in general, greater genetic similarity between the two species of Pygocentrus (P. nattereri and P. piraya), between Serrasalmus rhombeus and S. marginatus and between S. maculatus, S. brandtii and S. eigenmanni. Pygocentrus nattereri, S. rhombeus and S. maculatus showed high intraspecific genetic variability. These species have each one, at least two different mitochondrial lineages that, currently, occur in sympatry (S. rhombeus) or in allopatry (P. nattereri and S. maculatus). Species delimitation analysis and the high values of genetic distances observed between populations of S. rhombeus and of S. maculatus indicated that each species may corresponds to a complex of cryptic species. The non-monophyletic condition of S. rhombeus and S. maculatus reinforces the hypothesis. The geographic distribution and the genetic differentiation pattern observed for the piranha species analyzed herein are discussed regarding the geological and hydrological events that occurred in the hydrographic basins.

RESUMO A região semiárida do nordeste brasileiro é marcada por elevadas incertezas quanto à ocorrência de chuvas intensas, bem como por anos sequenciados de secas. Esses fenômenos naturais, somados à reduzida utilização de práticas conservacionistas, podem gerar degradação dos solos. Nesse contexto, o presente estudo objetivou avaliar a importância do uso de cobertura morta e espécies de oleaginosas não convencionais perenes (Moringa oleifera Lam. e Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) no controle da erosão do solo em parcelas de erosão, em condições de chuvas naturais. O estudo realizou-se durante os anos de 2016 e 2017 na bacia representativa do Mimoso, localizada no município de Pesqueira (PE), Brasil. Na área de estudo, instalaram-se três parcelas de erosão, cada uma com área igual a 40 m2 (2 × 20 m), que foram intensamente monitoradas no tocante à intensidade de precipitação, à umidade e à temperatura do solo, ao escoamento superficial e à produção de sedimentos. Para cada parcela experimental, adotaram-se os seguintes tratamentos: oleaginosas; oleaginosas + cobertura morta; solo descoberto. A cobertura do solo com oleaginosas e cobertura morta resultou em maior retenção de umidade do solo e menores valores de escoamento superficial e perdas de solo. O desenvolvimento da estrutura das oleaginosas diminuiu o impacto direto das gotas de chuva no solo, reduzindo as perdas de solo quando comparadas ao descoberto.

ABSTRACT The semiarid region of the Brazilian Northeast is marked by strong uncertainties regarding the occurrence of extreme rainfall, as well as the occurrence of sequenced year droughts. These natural phenomena, together with limited use of soil and water conservation practices, can generate soil degradation. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the importance of the use of mulch and non-conventional perennial oleaginous species (Moringa oleifera Lam. and Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) in soil erosion plots under natural rainfall. The study was conducted during the years of 2016 and 2017 in the representative basin of Mimoso, located in the municipality of Pesqueira, Pernambuco, Brazil. Three erosion plots each with an area of 40 m2 (2 m × 20 m), were installed in the study area, which were intensively monitored for rainfall intensity, soil moisture and temperature, runoff and sediment production. For each experimental plot, the following treatments were adopted: Oleaginous; Oleaginous + mulch; Bare soil. Soil cover with oleaginous species and mulch resulted in higher soil moisture and lower amounts of runoff and soil loss. The development of the tree structure of the oleaginous reduced the direct impact of raindrops on the soil surface, reducing the soil losses when compared to the bare soil.

ABSTRACT This work aimed to evaluate the elemental composition of different biomass components of the forest species Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth and Ateleia glazioviana Baill, at their first, third and fifth year after planting, aiming at bioenergetic use. The biomass elemental composition was determined by quantifying the levels of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen. The three ages, the four species, and the four compartments differ in relation to the elementary constituents. The use of trees at any age allows for energy use. The fifth year presents the best carbon and hydrogen values, being the best age for using the biomass energy of the different species. A. mearnsii presents the highest carbon values for the leaf and A. glazioviana presents the highest hydrogen values for all compartments. The leaf is the best compartment for energetic use.

ABSTRACT In this paper, we present an approach and investigation on the evolution of the icosahedral and decagonal phases of quasicrystalline alloys Al62.2C25.3Fe12.5 E Al65Ni15Co20, the oxidation behavior in them. The quantification of the quasicrystalline and crystalline phases present in the quasicrystals provides important information in the mass transport by diffusion, as well as the phase transformations that occurred. For this purpose, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld Method Quantification, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) / Dispersive Energy Spectroscopy (EDS), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetric Analysis). The results showed structural aspects of the two compositions of quasicrystals, these were elaborated and obtained in an arc induction furnace. The oxidation of the alloy Al62.2Cu25.3Fe12.5 showed intermetallic phases with associations of the elements of the alloy and above 735 °C was observed that the crystalline phase is stable in the icosahedral phase. The quasicrystals Al65Ni15Co20, with the interaction of oxygen, happens in the surface of symmetry 10 times plane perpendicular vector. The formation of a thin film of the aluminum oxide with a well ordered hexagonal shape structure, with a domain opposite the decagonal phase with lateral size at about 35 Å.

RESUMO As plantas invasoras podem modificar profundamente as características físicas e biológicas de seus novos ambientes, especialmente quando esses habitats já estão fragmentados e reduzidos pela pressão antropogênica, como a Mata Atlântica do Brasil. Aqui, nós hipotetizamos que as palmeiras exóticas se estabelecem com sucesso entre as populações naturais de Euterpe edulis através de entrada contínua de propágulos pela avifauna, altas taxas de germinação e rápido crescimento. Como resultado, a palmeira nativa está sofrendo declínio e pode estar ameaçada de extinção. A partir de 2007, realizamos um inventário florestal contínuo (FCI) a cada três anos nos fragmentos florestais primários e secundários de Viçosa, Minas Gerais. Usamos uma matriz de Markov para projetar futuras distribuições de palmeiras. A floresta secundária continha três espécies de palmeiras exóticas: Archontophoenix alexandrae, Livistona chinensis e Arenga caudata. A primeira palmeira é um sério risco para as populações naturais de E. edulis na Mata Atlântica, devido às interações freqüentes com as aves, à rápida germinação e à colonização agressiva nos estratos verticais inferior e médio da floresta. Atualmente, as populações naturais de E. edulis são viáveis e sustentáveis, capazes de regeneração, crescimento e frutificação, pois suas comunidades mantêm o fluxo gênico contínuo, dominando os estratos verticais da floresta em comparação com as palmeiras exóticas. No entanto, palmeiras exóticas devem ser monitoradas e medidas de controle devem ser analisadas, especialmente em áreas com populações de A. alexandrae.

ABSTRACT Invasive plants can profoundly modify physical and biological characteristics of their new environments, especially when such habitats are already fragmented and reduced by anthropogenic pressure, such as the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Here, we hypothesized that exotic palms successfully establish among the natural Euterpe edulis populations through a continuous propagule input by avifauna, high germination rates, and rapid growth. As a result, the native palm is experiencing decline and may be threatened with extinction. Beginning in 2007, we conducted a continuous forest inventory (FCI) every three years in the primary and secondary forest fragments of Viçosa, Minas Gerais. We use a Markov matrix to project future distributions of palm trees. The secondary forest contained three exotic palm species: Archontophoenix alexandrae, Livistona chinensis, and Arenga caudata. The first palm is a serious risk to natural E. edulis populations in the Atlantic because of frequent interactions with birds, rapid germination, and aggressive colonization in the lower to medium vertical forest strata. Currently, natural E. edulis populations are viable and sustainable, capable of regeneration, growth, and fruiting, their communities maintain continuous gene flow, dominating vertical forest strata compared with exotic palms. However, exotic palms should be monitored and control measures should be analyzed, especially in areas with A. alexandrae populations.

RESUMO As populações apresentam flutuações espaço-temporais em abundância devido a processos aleatórios e auto-regulatórios. Nesse trabalho avaliamos efeitos de vários fatores sobre a abundância da curimba, Prochilodus lineatus, em cinco ambientes da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná, Brasil, durante 19 anos. A análise de dados em painel foi utilizada por examinar variações espaço-temporais na abundância considerando processos auto-regressivos e variâncias espacialmente heterogêneas, que por vezes dificultam a identificação das relações. Como fontes de variação na abundância da curimba foram consideradas: predação, competição, variáveis abióticas selecionadas, construção da barragem de Porto Primavera, nível da água do rio Paraná e intensidade de cheia no período reprodutivo. Foi identificado que predação e competição não foram significativamente associadas às abundâncias da curimba; condutividade específica foi indicadora espacial da abundância; intensidade das cheias foi determinante de variações interanuais na abundância; barragem de Porto Primavera influenciou, negativamente, a abundância em corpos d’água diretamente afetados. A análise de dados em painel mostrou ser uma poderosa ferramenta preditiva, que possibilitou identificar a necessidade de cheias intensas para manutenção de elevadas abundâncias de curimba no alto rio Paraná. Acreditamos que o mesmo seja válido espécies de peixes que apresentam estratégia de vida similar.

ABSTRACT Populations show spatial-temporal fluctuations in abundance, partly due to random processes and partly due to self-regulatory processes. We evaluated the effects of various external factors on the population numerical abundance of curimba Prochilodus lineatus in the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil, over a 19-year period. Panel data analysis was applied to examine the structure of temporal and spatial abundance while controlling auto-regressive processes and spatial non-homogeneity variances that often obscure relationships. As sources of population variation, we considered predation, competition, selected abiotic variables, construction of a dam upstream of the study area, water level and flood intensity during the spawning period. We found that biological interactions (predation and competition) were not significantly related to variations in curimba abundance; specific conductance was a space indicator of abundance, apparently linked to the biology of the species; intensity of floods determined inter-annual variation in abundances; Porto Primavera Dam negatively impacted the abundances at sites in the floodplain directly affected by discharges from the dam. Panel data analysis was a powerful tool that identified the need for intense flooding to maintain high abundances of curimba in the upper Paraná River. We believe our results apply to other species with similar life strategy.

RESUMO Teorias sobre nicho ecológico afirmam que divergência em traços funcionais entre espécies nativas e introduzidas são essenciais ao estabelecimento da espécie introduzida, pois estas devem ocupar um nicho não utilizado pelas espécies residentes. Por outro lado, a teoria de filtros ambientais afirma a convergência entre espécies introduzidas e nativas, pois ambas possuem traços funcionais que fazem com que essas espécies estejam mais adaptadas as variáveis ambientais. Foram avaliadas a morfologia, ocorrência espacial, dieta, seletividade alimentar, sobreposição e largura de nicho em Erythrinidae para detectar possíveis mecanismos atuando na coexistência de espécies nativas e não nativas. Espécies nativas (Hoplias sp. B e Hoplias cf. malabaricus) e não nativas (Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus e Hoplias mbigua) apresentaram diferenças em todos os atributos testados. Os mecanismos mediando a coexistência de espécies nativas e não nativas parecem variar de acordo com a espécie considerada. A ausência de sobreposição espacial e na dieta sugere que a espécie não nativa H. unitaeniatus ocupa um nicho distinto que as espécies nativas, favorecendo seu estabelecimento sem eliminar as espécies nativas, apontando para segregação de nicho. Por outro lado, morfologias similares, porém com diferentes dietas foram observadas para as espécies de Hoplias, sugerindo que as espécies coexistem devido à filtros ambientais, assim, neste caso, a espécie não nativa H. mbigua é capaz de se estabelecer no novo ambiente devido à similaridades em traços funcionais.

ABSTRACT The limiting similarity theory predicts that divergence in the functional traits of native and introduced species is an essential component in species establishment, as introduced species must occupy a niche that is unoccupied by resident species. On the other hand, the environmental filtering hypothesis predicts convergence between introduced and native species, as both possess traits that make them adapted to the local abiotic environment. Morphology, spatial co-occurrence, diet, feeding selectivity, and niche breadth and overlap of Erythrinidae were evaluated to detect possible mechanisms acting in the coexistence between non-native and native species. Native (Hoplias sp. B and Hoplias cf. malabaricus) and non-native (Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus and Hoplias mbigua) species presented differences in morphological traits, spatial co-occurrence, diet, selectivity, and niche breadth and overlap. The mechanisms mediating species coexistence seem to vary according to species. The absence of spatial and feeding overlap suggests that non-native species H. unitaeniatus occupy a different niche than native species, supporting its successful establishment without eliminating the native species. However, low feeding overlap and similar morphologies between non-native and native species of Hoplias point to environmental filters; in this case, the non-native H. mbigua is able to establish due to similarities in functional traits.

RESUMO A implantação de barragens tem perturbado e fragmentado os ecossistemas fluviais da América do Sul, afetando a migração dos peixes e dinâmicas de dispersão. Sistemas de transposição de peixes (STPs) têm sido instalados na tentativa de atenuar esses impactos. No entanto, pouco se sabe sobre a distribuição geográfica desses dispositivos, bem como o esforço de pesquisa aplicado para entender seu funcionamento e limitações. Nosso trabalho reuniu a literatura disponível com a finalidade de fornecer um panorama sobre os mecanismos investigados na América do Sul, bem como revelar o esforço e perfil das pesquisas. Encontramos 80 estudos que investigaram 25 STPs, a maioria escadas instaladas nos trechos superiores de grandes rios, particularmente na bacia do rio Paraná. Um resultado interessante é que a maior parte dos STPs está desconectada de trechos a montante e jusante devido à presença de outras barragens sem STPs. Embora o número de estudos tenha aumentado na última década, não registramos tendência consistente de incremento ao longo dos anos. No geral, os estudos abordam aspectos do próprio STP, especificamente a passagem ascendente, ignorando temas mais abrangentes (i.e. distribuição de habitats, dinâmica populacional). Além disso, o foco da pesquisa se direciona especialmente às questões de eficiência da passagem e raramente ao contexto da conservação e sucesso do manejo. Nossa avaliação, portanto, indicou que os estudos pretéritos são tecnicamente limitados, revelando importantes lacunas sobre o conhecimento dos STPs como medida de manejo.

ABSTRACT River regulation has fragmented fluvial ecosystems in South America, affecting fish migration and dispersion dynamics. In response, authorities have installed fish passage facilities (FPF) to mitigate impacts. However, little is known about the geographical distribution of these facilities, and no synthesis of the research effort applied to understanding their functioning and limitations exists. To address this issue, our study gathered the available scientific literature about fishways in South America to provide an overview of studied FPF and associated research effort. We found 80 studies that investigated 25 FPF, mostly ladders installed in the upper reaches of large rivers, particularly in the Paraná River Basin. One important finding is that most facilities do not lead to upstream and/or downstream sites due to the presence of other dams with no FPF. Though the number of studies has increased over the past 10 years, there is no consistent trend towards increased research effort. Overall, studies have focused on the fishway itself (i.e. upstream passage), and rarely evaluated broader issues (i.e. habitat distribution, population dynamics, conservation and management success). Our research therefore identified technical limitations of past studies, and revealed important gaps in the knowledge of FPF as a management tool.

ABSTRACT Objective Vertebral fracture is the most common osteoporotic fracture, affecting quality of life and increasing mortality. Epidemiological data on incidence of vertebral fracture are scarce in Brazil and throughout Latin America. Our aim was to determine vertebral fracture incidence and risk factors in a female Brazilian population. Subjects and methods Postmenopausal women with low bone mass were studied from the Brazilian placebo group of Arzoxifene Generations Trial (n = 974), followed for up to 5 years. The primary endpoint was new vertebral fractures, detected by X-Ray. Experimental design defined two strata: A. Osteoporosis or previous vertebral fracture with osteopenia; B. Osteopenia without previous fracture. Previous fracture, T-score, ionized calcium, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine and glucose were analyzed at baseline. Crude and adjusted incidence rates of vertebral fractures were estimated and Poisson regression model was used. Results Incidence rate was 7.7 (95% CI of 5.4 to 10.9) per 1,000 person-years (PY), increasing as a function of age. Women with new vertebral fractures had higher prevalence of previous nonvertebral fracture after menopause, were older and had lower lumbar spine (LS) T-score. Fracture risk increased by 46% for each unit reduction in LS T-score. Variables correlated with new vertebral fracture were age (p = 0.034), LS T-score, stratum A (p = 0.001 for both) and previous nonvertebral fracture after menopause (p = 0.019). In the final model, LS T-score was the strongest predictor. Conclusions Incidence rate of vertebral fracture of 7.7 per 1,000 PY. Age and previous fractures were associated with new vertebral fracture, but LS T-score was the most important predictor.

Resumo: Os quelônios são importantes como fonte alimentar e econômica para as comunidades da região amazônica. Sendo assim, a caça, a pesca e a procura por ovos destes animais tem ocorrido frequentemente. Podocnemis expansa (Tartaruga da Amazônia) é o maior quelônio de água doce da América do Sul. É uma espécie largamente distribuída, porém, nota-se que aspectos anatômicos da espécie são insuficientemente descritos. O objetivo desse estudo foi descrever a cavidade orofaríngea desses quelônios. Foram utilizadas 12 cabeças de P. expansa adultas, de ambos os sexos, com idade entre 3 a 8 anos, com peso corpóreo de 5 a 22kg (média de 7,5kg). P. expansa conta com a presença de rafontecas afiadas e bem desenvolvidas que, associadas à musculatura potente da mandíbula e à língua volumosa e bem distribuída no assoalho da orofaringe, atuam na apreensão e deglutição do alimento, garantindo uma maior adaptação em diversos ambientes.

Abstract: Turtles are important as food and economic resources for the Amazon communities and there is a large demand on its meat and eggs. Podocnemis expansa (Giant South American turtle) is the largest freshwater chelonian of South America. This turtle is a widely distributed specie, however its anatomical features are poorly described. The objective of this study was to describe the oropharyngeal cavity of the turtle. Twelve heads of 3 to 8-year-old female and male P. expansa turtles with an average body weight of 7.5kg were used. P. expansa has a sharp and well developed rhamphotheca, which together with a powerful jaw muscles and a large tongue uniformly distributed on the oropharynx floor works for the apprehension and swallowing of food, what ensures good adaptation in different environments.

O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a associação entre alelos HLA, loci DQA1, DQB1 e DRB1, polimorfismos -168A/G e +1614G/C no gene CIITA, e suscetibilidade à esclerose múltipla (EM) em uma amostra de Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Além disso, buscou-se determinar se alguma dessas associações pode ser gênero-dependente. Foram analisadas amostras de DNA de 52 pacientes com EM reincidente-remitente (EMRR) e 126 controles saudáveis pareados por sexo e idade. Foi identificada associação significativa HLA-DRB1*15:01-EMRR, que foi específica para o gênero feminino (Odds Ratio (OR) = 4,78, p = 0,001). Além disso, observou-se que o polimorfismo +1614 G/C, em combinação com o alelo HLA-DRB1*15:01 provoca o aumento da susceptibilidade à EM em pacientes do sexo feminino (OR = 4,55, p = 0,01). Juntos, estes resultados destacam a natureza poligênica da EM.

The objective of this study was to investigate the association between the HLA alleles at the DQA1, DQB1 and DRB1 loci, the CIITA genetic polymorphisms -168A/G and +1614G/C, and susceptibility to multiple sclerosis (MS) in a sample from Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Furthermore, we wished to determine whether any of these associations might be more significant in women compared with men. DNA samples from 52 relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) patients and 126 healthy controls matched for sex and age were analyzed. We identified a significant HLA-DRB1*15:01-MS association that was female-specific (Odds Ratio (OR) = 4.78; p = 0.001). Furthermore, we observed that the +1614G/C mutation in combination with the HLA-DRB1*15:01 allele increased susceptibility to MS in females (OR = 4.55; p = 0.01). Together, these findings highlight the polygenic nature of MS.
