There has been a considerable amount of work on the effects of Artemia enrichment on shrimp larvae. However, the effects on the subsequent growth performance have not been thoroughly investigated. From mysis I to eight day-old postlarvae (PL8), shrimp (Farfantepenaeus paulensis) were fed either newly hatched Artemia nauplii or Artemia enriched with an emulsion containing high levels of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA). Upon reaching PL8, shrimp were exposed to salinity and ammonia stress tests. Growth performance was assessed by further rearing shrimp for 40 days. Shrimp fed the enriched Artemia (named EG) had higher tolerance to both salinity and ammonia than those fed newly hatched Artemia (named CG). Weight of PL from EG was also significantly higher than in CG. Higher levels of n-3 HUFA, especially 20:5 n-3 and 22:6 n-3, were found in the enriched Artemia. In the postlarvae, higher levels of n-6 and n-3 HUFA were observed in EG, while PL from CG presented higher levels of 18:3 n-3 and 18:4 n-3. At the end of the nursery rearing, no differences in survival were observed, but weight was higher in EG (1.08 g) than in CG (0.90 g). The supplementation of n-3 HUFA during larviculture increases the tolerance of F. paulensis postlarvae to salinity and ammonia, and positively affects growth performance after a 40 days long rearing period.

Effects of shrimp confinement in a situation of high density stocking in a long term nursery on their growth performance in grow out ponds. Were analized two nurseries with a density of 2000 shrimp m-2 were stocked at two different times. The first nursery (LTN) lasted 144 days, and the SGR of the animals was 3.0% day-1. The second nursery (STN) lasted 18 days and the specific growth rate (SGR) was 19.9% day-1. On the same day, shrimps were transferred to six lined ponds at a density of 20 shrimp m-2 where they remained for 101 days. In the first biometry, the SGR in the LTN treatment, increased to 6.7% day-1 and in the STN it decreased to 5.0% day-1. At the end, shrimps of the LTN and STN treatments reached weights of 8.46 and 6.72 g and had productivities of 1287 and 1015 kg ha-1, respectively. Shrimps reared in nurseries for long periods showed growth and survival rates similar to those obtained using conventional management practices in grow out structures.

Se analizó el efecto del confinamiento de camarones en una situación de alta densidad de población en una pre-engorda, sobre su crecimiento a largo plazo en los estanques de engorde. Dos estanques de pre-engorda con densidad de 2,000 camarones m-2 fueron sembrados en dos momentos diferentes. La primera crianza de largo plazo (LTN) duró 144 días, y la tasa de crecimiento específico (SGR) de los animales fue 3,0% día-1. La segunda crianza de corto plazo (STN) duró 18 días y el SGR fue 19,9% día-1. En el mismo día, los camarones fueron trasladados a seis estanques en una densidad de 20 camarones m-2, donde permanecieron durante 101 días. En la primera biometría, la SGR en el tratamiento LTN aumentó a 6,7% día-1 y STN disminuyó a 5,0% día-1. Al final, los camarones de los tratamientos LTN y STN llegaron a 8,46 y 6,72 g con productividad de 1.287 y 1.015 kg ha-1, respectivamente. Los camarones cultivados en pre-engorda durante largos períodos presentaron crecimiento y supervivencia similares a los obtenidos mediante prácticas de manejo convencionales en los estanques de engorda.

Modelos ecológicos têm sido utilizados como ferramenta para avaliar potenciais impactos ambientais causados pela aquicultura. Neste trabalho, foi aplicado um modelo matemático para estimar a quantidade máxima de unidades de produção (cercados com 3.100 m2) do camarão-rosa Farfantepenaeus paulensis que podem ser instalados em duas baías rasas no estuário da Lagoa dos Patos (conhecidas como Coreia e Porto do Rei), sem efeitos significativos sobre a qualidade da água e viabilidade do sistema de engorda. Para calibrar o modelo, informações sobre a criação de Litopenaeus vannamei e F. paulensis, bem como dados de campo (influência de material de pano, a velocidade da corrente da água e concentração de nitrogênio) foram utilizados. Considerando um cenário ruim, velocidade da corrente da água de 0,01 m s–1 e um efeito de colmatação da malha de 40%, seria possível instalar no máximo 29 cercados na baía Coreia e 39 na baia Porto do Rei. Os resultados indicam que o modelo foi útil para determinar o número máximo de unidades de produção que podem ser instalados nestes compartimentos e, portanto, tem o potencial para se tornar uma ferramenta importante na definição de estratégias de gestão ambiental, em relação ao desenvolvimento da aquicultura.

Ecological modeling has been used as a tool to estimate potential impacts caused by aquaculture to the surrounding environment. In this work, a mathematical model was applied to estimate the maximum amount of pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus paulensis) culture units (3,100m2 pen enclosures) that could be installed at two shallow estuarine bays of Patos Lagoon (known as Coreia and Porto do Rei) with no significant effects on either water quality or viability of the culture system. To calibrate the model, information about the culture of Litopenaeus vannamei and F. paulensis as well as field data (influence of netting material, water current speed and nitrogen concentrations) were used. Under a bad scenario (water current velocity of 0.01m s–1 and a mesh clogging effect of 40%), it would be possible to install up to 29 pens at the Coreia bay, and 39 pens at the Porto do Rei bay. Results indicate that the model was useful in determining the maximum number of culture units that could be installed at these bays, and thus have the potential to become an important tool in the definition of environmental management strategies in relation to aquaculture development.

Os experimentos foram realizados para investigar os efeitos da amônia, nitrito e nitrato no consumo alimentar de juvenis de Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis. Os camarões com peso médio de 4g foram aclimatados durante 28 dias em diferentes concentrações crônicas de amônia, nitrito e nitrato. Após o período de exposição de 28 dias, 20 camarões por tratamento foram individualizados em unidades experimentais de 3 L, a fim de ser analisado o consumo de ração em função da quantidade de alimento oferecido e as sobras durante um período de 24 horas. O consumo alimentar apresentou alterações significativas (P<0,05) para os camarões expostos às concentrações de nitrito e nitrato testadas, enquanto para o tratamento com amônia, os camarões não apresentaram alterações no consumo alimentar (P>0,05). Foi verificado que o nitrito e o nitrato afetam o consumo alimentar de F. brasiliensis. Contudo, a possibilidade de que isso ocorra durante longos períodos, afetando negativamente o cultivo de espécies em cativeiro, reforçam a necessidade do manejo da qualidade de água.

The experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate on food consumption of juvenile F. brasiliensis. The juvenile shrimp were acclimated for 28 days with different cronic concentrations of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. After the acclimation period, 20 shrimps per treatment were individualized in 3 L experimental units in order to analyze their feed intake through the amount of feed offered and leftover for a period of 24 hours. The food consumption presented significant alteration (P<0.05) for the nitrite and nitrate concentrations tested, meanwhile on ammonia treatment, shrimp presented no alteration on food intake (P>0.05). According to the results obtained, nitrite and nitrate affected F. brasiliensis food consumption. However, the possibility of this to happen over long periods, can damage the species in captivity, reinforced the necessity of regular water quality management.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o uso de probióticos na produção de pós-larvas do camarão-rosa (Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis). Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com dois tratamentos - uso de probióticos (Bacillus spp.) e controle com uso de antibiótico (eritromicina) - e quatro repetições. Pós-larvas no estágio PL1 foram estocadas em cada parcela experimental (3,0 L) e cultivadas até o estágio PL10. As variáveis de qualidade de água e o desenvolvimento de bactérias do gênero Vibrio, na água de cultivo, foram monitorados ao longo do experimento. Ao final do período experimental, as pós-larvas foram avaliadas qualitativamente e quanto à sobrevivência, ao peso e ao comprimento. Nas variáveis de qualidade de água, apenas o nitrito apresentou valor significativamente maior no tratamento com antibiótico. Para as variáveis peso e comprimento final, não houve diferenças significativas entre os tratamentos. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas entre os tratamentos quanto à qualidade das pós-larvas e à concentração de Vibrio spp. na água. A utilização de antibiótico pode ser substituída pelo emprego de probióticos durante a produção de pós-larvas de F. brasiliensis.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of probiotics in the production of postlarvae of pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis). A completely randomized experimental design was used, with two treatments - use of probiotics (Bacillus spp.), and a control using antibiotic (erythromycin) -, and four replicates. Postlarvae in the PL1 stage were stocked in each experimental unit (3.0 L) and cultured until stage PL10. Water quality variables and the development of the bacteria of the genus Vibrio, in the culture water, were monitored throughout the experiment. At the end of the experimental period, postlarvae were evaluated qualitatively and for survival, weight, and length. Regarding water quality variables, only nitrite was significantly higher in the antibiotic treatment. For the variables weight and length, there were no significant differences between treatments. No significant differences between treatments were observed in postlarvae quality and in the concentration of Vibrio spp. in the water. The use of antibiotics may be replaced by probiotics during production of F. brasiliensis postlarvae.

O presente estudo comparou os métodos manual e elétrico de extrusão do espermatóforo do camarão-rosa Farfantepenaeus paulensis com o objetivo de verificar se os métodos de extrusão exercem influência na quantidade de células espermáticas e na regeneração de novos espermatóforos. Os machos foram extrusados no início (dia zero) e no final do experimento (dia 43) para verificação da eficiência dos métodos no processo de regeneração. A extrusão manual foi realizada por meio de pressão na região do quinto par de pereiópodos e o método elétrico com uso de eletrodo para transmissão de impulso elétrico de 9 volts na mesma região. Os dois métodos foram considerados eficientes, não sendo encontradas diferenças significativas entre estes (P>0,05) para o número de células espermáticas. Entretanto, foi verificada, no final do experimento, a perda de peso corporal, peso de espermatóforo e menor índice espermatossomático (IES) (P<0,05) nos animais submetidos a extrusão do espermatóforo por estímulo elétrico. Os valores médios finais (±DP) do número de espermatozóides foram 1,46 (±0,84) e 3,25 milhões (±2,12) para os tratamentos com método elétrico e manual, respectivamente. Os resultados indicam que ambos os métodos podem ser utilizados para a coleta inicial de espermatóforos e testes de qualidade de espermatozóide. Entretanto, para a reutilização dos machos após a extrusão inicial do espermatóforo, o método manual é mais indicado pela manutenção do número de células espermáticas, peso do espermatóforo, peso corporal e índice espermatossomático após a regeneração.

The present study compared manual and electrical methods to extrude the spermatophore of the pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis aiming to analyze their influence on the number of spermatic cells and spermatophore regeneration. The males were extruded in the beginning (day zero) and in the end (43rd day) of the experiment to evaluate the efficiency of these methods in the regeneration process. For the extrusion, a gentle pressure was applied manually in the fifth pair of pereiopods or electrically by a 9 volt pulse in the same area. Both methods were efficient in removing the spermatophore and no significant differences were found (P>0.05) in the number of sperm cells. Nevertheless, significant decreases (P<0.05) in the body weight, spermatophore weight and spermatosomatic index (ESI) at the end of the experimental period were observed by using the electrical stimulation. The mean values (±SD) of the number of sperm cells were 1.46 (±0.84) and 3.25 (±2.12) millions for the electrical and manual treatments, respectively. Results indicate that both methods may be applied to collect initial samples of spermatophores as well as for sperm quality testing. However, when previously spermatophore-extruded males are to be used, the manual method is indicated as the number of spermatic cells, spermatophore weight, body weight, and ESI are maintained after regeneration.

Esta revisão constitui a primeira iniciativa de reunir em um só documento os recentes desenvolvimentos/estudos sobre maturação e reprodução de Farfantepenaeus paulensis em cativeiro. O objetivo do presente estudo foi revisar informações que poderão colaborar para a produção sustentável de náuplios de F. paulensis em cativeiro. Foi dada ênfase aos estudos que vem sendo realizados na última década no Laboratório de Maricultura, Fundação Universidade Federal do Rio Grande, RS. A discussão aborda aspectos relativos ao ciclo reprodutivo, maturação ovariana, sistemas de maturação e desova, inseminação artificial, performance de reprodutores e manutenção de reprodutores em cativeiro.

This paper describes the latest developments on maturation and reproduction of Farfantepenaeus paulensis in captivity, with special reference to the studies conducted during the last decade at the Laboratory of Mariculture, University of Rio Grande in southern Brazil, aiming to improve the future outlook for a sustainable nauplii production of F. paulensis. Particular emphasis has been given on the reproductive cycle, ovarian maturation, maturation and spawning systems, artificial insemination, broodstock reproductive performance and maintenance of captive broodstock.
