Abstract This study evaluates seven flat slabs made with reinforced concrete. There are three reference slabs, one of them doesn’t present any shear reinforcement. Four slabs have a new model of shear reinforcement of stud type, internally anchored to the flexural reinforcements. That reinforcement has an additional element, called on this study by the name: anti-cracking pins. The main objective of the research is to find the ideal spacing between these pins to achieve a failure mode and a failure load similar to the reference slabs that have conventional studs. For that, are evaluated: vertical displacements, rotation, shear reinforcement deformation, load capacity and failure mode. The slabs with the new stud have a load gain of 40% to 106% compared to the slab without studs LRef. The slab L-5-13 presented a load and a failure mode similar to the slab of reference, LRef-AC.

Resumo Esse estudo avalia sete lajes lisas de concreto armado. São três lajes de referência, dessas uma não apresenta armadura de cisalhamento, e quatro com uma novo modelo de armadura de cisalhamento do tipo stud, ancorado internamente às armaduras de flexão. Essa armadura possui um elemento adicional, denominado nessa pesquisa de pinos anti-fissuração. O objetivo principal da pesquisa é encontrar o espaçamento ideal entre esses pinos para atingir um modo e carga de ruptura semelhante às lajes de referência com studs convencionais. Para tanto são avaliados deslocamentos verticais, rotação, deformação das armaduras de cisalhamento, capacidade de carga e modo de ruptura. As lajes com o novo stud apresentam ganho de carga de 40% a 106% com relação à laje sem studs LRef. A laje L-5-13 apresentou carga e modo de ruptura similar à sua laje de referência LRef-AC.

resumo: Investigações experimentais têm sido comumente usadas para melhorar o conhecimento existente sobre o projeto estrutural, apresentando conclusões precisas sobre o comportamento da estrutura. No entanto, considerando as limitações dos estudos experimentais, como quantidade restrita de extensômetros, patologias inesperadas, dificuldades de previsão do correto posicionamento das fissuras ou simples economia de custos, o uso da análise numérica pode apresentar algumas abordagens inovadoras para a compreensão do processo de falha em elementos de concreto, apresentando resultados mais fáceis onde programas experimentais dificilmente podem relatar. Este estudo apresenta a análise numérica de oito vigas experimentadas por Sherwood [26], com dois tamanhos diferentes e agregados de tamanhos variados, buscando-se entender a influência do tamanho do agregado na resistência ao cisalhamento de vigas sem estribos. A abordagem numérica foi usada para avaliar a influência de cada mecanismo de cisalhamento interno e para identificar a quantidade específica de força de pino, transferência de cisalhamento na zona de compressão não fissurada e a parcela de intertravamento de agregados. Os resultados mostraram que resultados razoáveis podem ser obtidos por abordagens de fissuras distribuídas 2D, permitindo a identificação da maior porção de intertravamento do agregado em vigas com maiores tamanhos de agregado graúdo. A comparação do efeito de escala em vigas permitiu concluir que uma maior contribuição do intertravamento de agregados pode ser obtida em vigas grandes, com quase 64% da contribuição total, enquanto as vigas menores tiveram apenas 43%. Os resultados de Sherwood [26] foram comparados com as normas Model Code [23], CSA-A.23.3 [24], NBR 6118 [38] e ACI 318 [39] para avaliar a precisão das normas estudadas. Com relação a previsão da ruptura dos elementos por meio dos mecanismos internos do concreto, as instruções normativas Model Code [23] e CSA A.23.3 [24] resultaram valores mais precisos.

abstract: Experimental investigations have been commonly used to improve the existing knowledge about structural design, presenting accurate conclusions regarding structure behavior. However, considering the limitations of experimental studies, such as restricted amount of strain gauges, unexpected pathologies, difficulties to foresee the correct position of cracks, or simply saving in costs, the use of numerical analysis can present some innovative approaches to understand the process of failure in concrete elements, presenting easier results where experimental programs can hardly report. This study presents the numerical analysis of eight beams experimented by Sherwood [26], with two different sizes and variable aggregate sizes, seeking to understand the influence of coarse aggregate size in shear strength of beams without stirrups. The numerical approach was used to derive the influence of each internal shear mechanism and to identify the specific amount of dowel force, shear transfer by uncracked compression zone and aggregate interlock portion. The results showed that fair results can be obtained by 2D smeared crack approaches, enabling the identification of major aggregate interlock portion in beams with bigger coarse aggregate sizes. Comparing the size effect in beams allowed us to conclude that a higher contribution of aggregate interlock contribution can be obtained in large beams, with almost 64% of the total contribution, whereas smaller beams had only 43%. To evaluate the accuracy of the studied mechanisms, the results of Sherwood [26] were compared with the standards Model Code [23], CSA-A.23.3 [24], NBR 6118 [38], and ACI 318 [39]. Regarding the prediction of element rupture by concrete internal mechanisms, the normative instructions Model Code [23] and CSA A.23.3 [24] were the closest to the experimental results.

resumo: Este trabalho propõe uma função para estimar a capacidade de carga com ruptura na punção de lajes lisas de concreto sem armadura de cisalhamento de acordo com a norma brasileira. A função considera a influência do teor de fibra de aço na adição do concreto. Foram utilizados dados de 68 lajes de concreto armado com fibras de aço, simulando a ligação de lajes lisas com pilares de seção quadrada. Essas lajes foram obtidas a partir de um estudo realizado por 14 pesquisadores diferentes. Os parâmetros utilizados para a função foram o teor de fibras e a resistência à compressão do concreto. A função foi obtida por ajuste de curva. O resultado da função ajustada mostra uma relação da ordem de 1,3 entre a carga de ruptura experimental e a carga calculada, valor próximo ao já obtido pelo texto normativo quando o cálculo é para concreto convencional. Isso mostra que a proposta aqui apresentada mantém o mesmo nível de segurança com um índice de confiança de 96% em comparação com os modelos de outros autores apresentados neste estudo.

abstract: This paper proposes an adjusted function for estimating the punching shear load-carrying capacity of concrete flat slabs without shear reinforcement according to the Brazilian standard code. The Adjusted function considers the influence of the steel fiber content. Data from 68 steel fiber reinforced concrete slabs (SFRC slabs) were used, simulating the connection of flat slabs with square section columns. These slabs were obtained from a study conducted by 14 different researchers. The parameters used for the adjusted function were the fiber content and the compressive strength of the concrete. The adjusted function was obtained by curve-fitting. The result from the adjusted function shows a relation in the order of 1.3 between the experimental rupture load and the calculated load, a value close to that already obtained by the normative text when the calculation is for conventional concrete. This shows that the proposal presented here keeps the same level of security with a confidence index of 96% in comparison with other authors’ models presented in this study.

Resumo Pesquisas com ênfase em análises comparativas entre modelos experimentais versus modelos numéricos em blocos sobre estacas tendem a apresentar discrepâncias nas rigidezes entre os modelos. O presente trabalho analisa numericamente blocos apoiados sobre duas estacas, enfatizando parâmetros que influenciam diretamente as respostas dos modelos simulados, principalmente no quesito da rigidez. Dentre os parâmetros avaliados nesse trabalho, destacam-se: as condições de contorno aplicadas na base das estacas, a utilização de elementos de interface na simulação do contato entre materiais e a influência da largura do bloco. Os resultados analisados são relativos à carga de ruptura, aos deslocamentos, às curvas carga versus deslocamento, aos fluxos de tensões e aos panoramas de fissuração. Os resultados encontrados demonstram que os parâmetros aqui analisados influenciam diretamente os resultados dos modelos numéricos quando comparados a resultados experimentais.

Abstract Research with emphasis on comparative analysis between experimental models versus numerical models in pile caps tend to present discrepancies in stiffness between models. The present paper numerically analyzes pile caps on two piles, emphasizing parameters that have direct influence on the responses of the simulated models, especially in terms of stiffness. Among the parameters evaluated in this paper, we note the following: boundary conditions applied to the base of the piles; the use of interface elements in the simulation of contact between materials; and the influence of pile cap width. The analyzed results are related to failure load, displacements, load versus displacement curves, stress flows, and cracking panoramas. The findings demonstrate that the parameters analyzed here have direct influence on the results of the numerical models when compared with the experimental results.

resumo: Com o aumento da utilização de lajes lisas e a necessidade da presença de aberturas para a passage de instalações hidráulicas e elétricas, que reduzem de forma acentuada a capacidade resistente à punção, o entendimento da influência de aberturas nesse tipo de estrutura se torna extremamente necessária. A influência no comportamento estrutural de lajes lisas com aberturas em diferentes distâncias do pilar foi investigada por meio de cinco lajes quadradas (1.800 mm x 1.800 mm x 130 mm), apoiadas sobre pilares quadrados (150 mm x 150 mm) e testadas até a ruptura. Os resultados obtidos experimentalmente foram comparados com resultados disponíveis na literatura, bem como com respostas previstas por meio de instruções normativas. Os experimentos mostram concentração elevada de tensões na região critica entre o pilar e a abertura e que a partir de 3d a abertura passa a não ter mais influência na carga de ruptura da laje.

abstract: The increase in the use of flat slabs and the need of the openings for the passage of installations, such as hydraulic and electrical, which significantly reduces the punching shear resistance capacity of the slab, makes the understanding of the influence of openings in this type of structure extremely necessary. The influence in the structural behaviour of flat slabs with openings at different distances from the column was investigated through five square slabs (1,800 mm x 1,800 mm x 130 mm) supported on square columns (150 mm x 150 mm) tested until failure. The results obtained experimentally were compared with results available in the literature, as well as with responses predicted from the normative instructions. The results confirm high stresses concentration in the region between the column and the opening and that opening situated at 3d from the column have no influence on the failure load for the tested slabs.

Resumo O presente trabalho simula e analisa numericamente duas paredes de uma direção (UD) com abertura não prevista, as quais foram testadas previamente de forma experimental. Os modelos se baseiam no Método de Elementos Finitos e consideram o comportamento não linear do concreto, como o endurecimento/amolecimento e fratura. O primeiro modelo de parede foi analisado sem reforço estrutural, enquanto o segundo foi reforçado com PRFC colado externamente envolvendo a abertura. O processo de modelagem do reforço é discutido através de três diferentes abordagens que são adequadas a tecidos unidirecionais de PRFC. Os resultados de carga são apresentados em gráficos carga-deslocamento e carga-deformação que evidenciam o comportamento a flexão desses elementos. O padrão de fissuração e modo de ruptura observado mostra boa concordância com o reportado na literatura. O reforço com PRFC apresentou uma pequena influência na capacidade de carga para a maior abertura.

Abstract The present work simulates and analyzes numerically two one-way walls (OW) with a central unforeseen cut-out-opening, which were previously tested experimentally. The models are based in the Finite Element Method and consider nonlinear behavior of the concrete material, such as hardening/softening and fracture. The first wall model was analyzed without any type of strengthening whereas the second one was strengthened using externally bonded CFRP along the opening edges. The strengthening modeling process was discussed through three different approaches suitable for unidirectional CFRP wrap. Load results were presented with load-displacement and load-strain curves that evidenced the flexural behavior of these structures. The crack pattern and failure mode observed showed good agreement with reported literature. The CFRP strengthening presented a small influence in the load capacity for big opening size.

Abstract Fiber-reinforced polymers are materials used to recover/strengthen reinforced concrete structures load capacity. This material exhibits good mechanical properties with low self-weight. This work performed a series of nonlinear finite element analyses in one-way (OW) wall panels with a central cut-out opening, strengthened using carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). The experimental tests conducted by Mohammed et al. (2013) were used as a benchmark. The numerical simulations were carried out in the commercial code ATENA, in which the material and geometrical nonlinearities were accounted. As a result, the numerical models reasonably predicted the ultimate load of the walls, and all models presented a crack pattern similar to the experimental tests, verifying that the CFRP addition caused a more distributed crack pattern. The results obtained in this work revealed that CFRP strengthening caused 24-50% enhancement of the ultimate load. Additional models were carried out to extend the numerical results and proposed a new equation that can be used to predict the ultimate load of OW walls with and without CFRP strengthening.

Resumo Nos últimos anos, pesquisas demonstram o concreto reforçado com fibras de aço como um compósito promissor que pode substituir parte das armaduras convencionais como estribos em vigas, uma vez que as fibras de aço aumentam a resistência ao cisalhamento e tenacidade, o que reduz a possibilidade de ruptura súbita. Neste trabalho foi desenvolvida uma pesquisa experimental para avaliar a influência da adição da fibra de aço na resistência ao cisalhamento e modo de ruptura de vigas de concreto armado sem armadura transversal com a variação da taxa de armadura longitudinal, teor de fibras de aço e resistência do concreto à compressão. Um total de doze vigas foi ensaiado à flexão em quatro pontos. Os resultados experimentais encontrados indicaram que o uso de fibras de aço com ganchos nas extremidades aumentam a resistência ao cisalhamento em vigas e alteram o padrão de fissuração com a formação de pelo menos duas fissuras diagonais e maior número de fissuras de flexão, que proporcionam uma ruptura mais avisada.

Abstract During the last few years, researchers have demonstrated steel fiber reinforced concrete as a promising composite. This composite can replace part of the conventional reinforcement such as like stirrups in beams once the steel fiber increases the shear strength and stiffness, reducing the possibility of sudden rupture. An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the influence of the addition of steel fiber in the nominal shear strength and failure mode of reinforced concrete beams without transverse reinforcement to the variation of longitudinal reinforcement ratio, steel fiber content and concrete compressive strength. A total of twelve beams were tested using a four point bending test. The experimental results indicated that the use of hooked steel fiber increase the shear strength of beams and alter the pattern of cracks with the formation of at least two diagonal cracks and a greater number of bending cracks providing a warning of the impending beam failure.

Abstract A series of nonlinear FE analyses was conducted in this paper to model the punching shear failure of RC flat slabs. The analyses were carried out in the software DIANA using three-dimensional continuum elements. These analyses involve the test of different modeling choices in order to evaluate their influences on punching shear failure modeling. The parameters examined are the size of the FE mesh, the convergence methods and the concrete material input parameters. These parameters were investigated by comparing the results of load carrying capacity, load-deflection response and crack patterns from the FE analyses with a reliable experimental test. From the results obtained, it could be concluded that the numerical model was able to reproduce accurately the behavior of the tested slab and capture the punching shear failure.

Abstract Punching shear is a possible type of failure that occurs in reinforced concrete flat slabs, which can develop with an ultimate load below flexural capacity. Several researchers have studied the punching resistance of flat slabs over recent years. Although they have made great advances, there are codes that show different approaches to a singular design. Some codes show that there exist contradictions, even in the simplest situations, such as concentric loads. Most codes prescribe empirical expressions based in a theoretical model to analyze punching strength, but for flat slabs with holes around the column and shear reinforcement there are divergences between codes, justifying research in this area. This paper presents an experimental analysis of nine square reinforced concrete flat slabs under concentric loading (width: 1800 mm; thickness: 130 mm). The main variables used in the tests were: a) two square openings (150 mm) adjacent to the smallest side of the column and b) the use of shear reinforcement containing 3 layers, with 6 or 8 elements in each layer and radially distributed around the column. The research concludes that openings adjacent to the column affect punching shear strength, while the correct use of the shear reinforcement can minimize and even compensate this loss.
