ABSTRACT: This research evaluated the agronomic performance through mixed models, and determined the genetic divergence between black oat genotypes. The experiment was carried out at Federal University of Santa Maria, Frederico Westphalen/RS. Fourteen black oat genotypes were evaluated, being 11 lines developed by Breeding Program of University, and three commercial cultivars (IAPAR 61, UPFA 21 - Moreninha and, IPR Cabocla). We evaluated quantitative traits associated to plant height, cycle, dry mass yield and seeds yield; and 19 qualitative traits, being these morphological descriptors. The results showed that lines UFSMFW 2-05 and UFSMFW 2-07 stand out with characteristics such as early cycle, higher dry mass and grain yield. Divergence analysis revealed the formation of three distinct groups, indicating the presence of variability. These results suggested the potential for the development of new cultivars of black oat, presenting early cycle and good grain yield. RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho agronômico por meio de modelos mistos e determinar a divergência genética entre genótipos de aveia preta. O experimento foi conduzido na Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, campus de Frederico Westphalen/RS. Catorze genótipos de aveia preta foram avaliados, sendo 11 linhagens desenvolvidas pelo Programa de Melhoramento da Universidade e três cultivares comercias (IAPAR 61, UPFA 21 - Moreninha e IPR Cabocla). Foram avaliadas características agronômicas quantitativas relacionadas ao porte, ciclo e produtividade de massa seca e de sementes; e 19 características qualitativas, sendo estes descritores morfológicos. Os resultados mostraram que as linhagens UFSMFW 2-05 e UFSMFW 2-07 se destacam com características como ciclo precoce, elevada produtividade de massa seca e de sementes. Abstract The objective of this work was to identify the most adapted and stable genotypes for dry mass and seed yield using the genotype plus environment interaction (GGE) biplot technique. The experiment was conducted in the municipality of Frederico Westphalen, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, using five lines and two cultivars of black oat, in a randomized complete block experimental design, with three replicates. The adaptability and stability of the genotypes, as well as their behavior in the environments, were evaluated using the GGE biplot. The seed yield of black oat genotypes is highly influenced by the environmental conditions over the four studied cultivation years. The UFSMFW 2-07 genotype stands out, but shows instability. The UFSMFW 2-07 and 'UPFA 21-Moreninha' genotypes show adaptability in specific years. Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar os genótipos mais adaptados e estáveis para massa seca e produtividade de sementes, com uso da técnica genótipo + interação genótipo-ambinete (GGE) biplot. O experimento foi conduzido no município de Frederico Westphalen, no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, em 2018, 2019, 2020 e 2021, tendo-se utilizado cinco linhagens e duas cultivares de aveia-preta, em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições. A adaptabilidade e a estabilidade dos genótipos, bem como seu comportamento nos ambientes, foram avaliados pelo GGE biplot. ABSTRACT Considering the expressive number of commercial soybean cultivars available for cultivation in Brazil and the constant search for improvements in the production system, the objective was to evaluate the productive components and grain yield and to estimate the correlation between them in soybean cultivars sown in the northwest region of Rio Grande do Sul, during the 2019/20 harvest. Sixteen commercial soybean cultivars were sown under their respective plant density recommendations, in a randomized block design with three replications. At the end of the cultivation cycle, the following variables were evaluated: plant height; height of insertion of the first pod; number of nodes; number of pods with one, two, three and four grains; pods per plant; grains per plant; weight of thousand grains, and; grain yield. The cultivars BMX ZEUS IPRO, NS 5445 IPRO and NS 5700 IPRO presented the highest grain yields, mainly due to the high relationship between the number of pods and grains per plant and the weight of a thousand grains. ABSTRACT The use of corn hybrids adapted to the soil and climate conditions of the cultivation region under adequate optimum plant density is a determining factor for the maximization of grain yield. In this sense, the objective was to evaluate the productivity of corn hybrids under two sowing densities during the 2020/21 crop season in the medium-high Uruguay region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The corn hybrids AS1555 PRO3, B2401 PWU, B2418 VYHR, B2612 PWU, BG7061 YHR, DKB235 PRO3, NS45 VIP3, NS73 VIP3, NS80 VIP3, P2501, P3016 VYHR, P3565 PWU and 30F53 VYHR were submitted to densities of 66,667 and 88,889 plants ha-1, in a randomized block design with ten replications. Corn hybrids showed superior grain yield when subjected to the density of 88,889 plants ha-1 in the medium-high Uruguay region of Rio Grande do Sul, surpassing in most cases the state and national average yield of harvest 2020/21. Most of the corn hybrids used present potential for cultivation at higher sowing density than their respective recommendations. ABSTRACT Investigation of multicollinearity allows parameters in multivariate analysis to be estimated with higher precision and with biological interpretation. In order to generate reliable estimates of the degree of multicollinearity, it is necessary to use appropriate sample size. Thus, the objectives of this study were to determine the sample size (number of plants) necessary to estimate the indicators of the degree of multicollinearity - condition number (CN), correlation matrix determinant (DET), and variance inflation factor (VIF) - in morphological traits of rye and to verify the variability of the sample size between the indicators. Five and three uniformity trials were conducted with the cultivars BRS Progresso and Temprano, respectively. Eight morphological traits were evaluated in 780 plants in eight trials. For each trial, 22 cases were selected among the 28 formed by the combination of eight traits, taken six by six, totaling 176 cases. In each case, 197 sample sizes were planned (20, 25, 30, ..., 1,000 plants) and in each size 2,000 resampling procedures with replacement were performed, CN, DET, and VIF were determined and the average among 2,000 estimates was calculated. RESUMO A investigação da multicolinearidade permite que parâmetros em análises multivariadas sejam estimados com maior precisão e com interpretação biológica. Para ter confiabilidade nas estimativas do grau de multicolinearidade, é necessário utilizar adequado tamanho de amostra. Assim, os objetivos deste trabalho foram determinar o tamanho de amostra (número de plantas) necessário para a estimação dos indicadores do grau de multicolinearidade - número de condição (NC), determinante da matriz de correlação (DET) e fator de inflação da variância (FIV) -em caracteres morfológicos de centeio e verificar a variabilidade do tamanho de amostra entre os indicadores. Foram conduzidos cinco e três ensaios de uniformidade com as cultivares BRS Progresso e Temprano, respectivamente. Foram avaliados oito caracteres morfológicos em 780 plantas em oito ensaios. Abstract The objective of this work was to select black oat genotypes using the MGIDI for simultaneous selection, comparing it with the Smith-Hazel index. The experiment was carried out in Frederico Westphalen/RS and Pato Branco/PR, in a randomized block design, with three replications, with 9 genotypes tested. RESUMO: Os objetivos deste estudo foram analisar a interferência do tamanho amostral no teste de não aditividade de Tukey e encontrar o tamanho de amostra para otimizar o teste para a produtividade de grãos em soja. Seis experimentos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso foram conduzidos com 20 ou 30 cultivares de soja em três repetições de cada tratamento. A produtividade de grãos foi definida por planta, totalizando 9.000 plantas amostradas. A seguir, foram simulados cenários amostrais de até 100 plantas, estimando a estatística F para um grau de liberdade do erro em cada cenário. Após, foi definido o tamanho amostral ótimo via modelos de potência e pontos de máxima curvatura. Os resultados mostram que o número de plantas amostradas por unidade experimental influencia as estimativas do teste de não aditividade de Tukey. Além disso, a amostragem de 14 a 19 plantas por unidade experimental possibilita manter a acurácia do teste.

ABSTRACT: This study analyzed the interference of sample size on Tukey’s test for non-additivity and found the sample size to optimize the test for soybean grain yield. Six experiments were conducted in a completely randomized block design with either 20 or 30 cultivars and three repetitions of each treatment. Grain yield was determined per plant, totaling 9,000 sampled plants. Next, sample scenarios up to 100 plants were simulated, estimating F statistic for a degree of freedom of the error in each scenario. After that, the optimal sample size was defined via power models and maximum curvature point. Results showed the number of sampled plants per experimental unit influences the estimates of Tukey’s test for non-additivity. Also, the sampling of 14 to 19 plants per experimental unit allows for maintaining the accuracy of the test.

Foram conduzidos seis experimentos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso com 20 ou 30 cultivares e três repetições. A produtividade de grãos foi definida por planta, totalizando 9.000 plantas amostradas. Logo, foram simulados cenários amostrais de 1, 2, ..., 100 plantas e definido o tamanho amostral ótimo via pontos de máxima curvatura. O aumento de plantas amostradas por unidade experimental favorece a precisão do teste de Bartlett. Além disso, a amostragem de 17 a 20 plantas por unidade experimental é suficiente para manter a acurácia do teste.

ABSTRACT: This study analyzed the response of the Bartlett test as a function of sample size and to define the optimal sample size for the test with soybean grain yield data. Six experiments were conducted in a randomized block design with 20 or 30 cultivars and three repetitions. Grain yield was determined per plant, totaling 9,000 sampled plants. RESUMO: Este estudo verificou se o tamanho de amostra afetaria a precisão da análise de variância em experimentos com mudas de couve-flor. Um experimento foi conduzido onde o número de folhas, comprimento de parte aérea, raiz e total foram mensurados. Para cada variável, reamostragens com reposição foram realizadas em cenários amostrais de 1, 2, ..., 100 mudas por unidade experimental e o tamanho de amostra foi definido para os componentes de variância por meio de modelos de Schumacher e pontos de máxima curvatura. Os quadrados médios da análise de variância sofrem interferência direta do número de mudas amostradas. A amostragem de 16 mudas por unidade experimental é suficiente para estimar a análise de variância de forma confiável, promovendo satisfatórios ganhos de precisão ao comparar-se com a amostragem de apenas uma muda por unidade experimental.

ABSTRACT: This study verified whether sample size would affect the precision of the analysis of variance in experiments with cauliflower seedlings. An experiment was carried out where the number of leaves and shoot, root and total length were measured. For each variable, resamplings with repositions were performed in sample scenarios of 1, 2, …, 100 seedlings per experimental unit, and the sample size was defined for the variance components through Schumacher models and maximum curvature points. The mean squares of the analysis of variance suffer direct interference from the number of sampled seedlings. The sampling of 16 seedlings per experimental unit is enough to estimate the analysis of variance reliably, promoting satisfactory precision gains compared to the sampling of only one seedling per experimental unit.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to assess yield components and grain yield of soybean cultivars in response to sowing densities. For this, two soybean cultivars and five sowing densities were tested, in a two-factor scheme. The following yield components were measured by the end of the cycle: plant height; insertion height of the first pod; number of nodes per plant; number of pods with one, two, three and four grains; number of pods per plant; number of grains per plant; weight of a thousand grains; humidity and grain yield. Sowing densities did not cause significant variations of grain yield (bags ha-1) for any cultivar, however, higher populational densities promoted a reduction in the number of pods with two and three grains, as well as a reduction in the total number of pods and grains per plant for both cultivars. Cultivar NS 5700 IPRO was the most productive, with a higher number of pods with two and three grains and number of pods and grains per plant.

ABSTRACT The canonical correlation analysis has been successfully used in many areas aiming to extract important information from a pair of data sets. Thus, the objective of this work was to determine the sample size (number of plants) required to estimate the canonical correlations in corn characteristics. Six characteristics were measured in 361, 373, and 416 plants, respectively, of the single, three-way and double cross hybrids of the 2008/2009 crop year and in 1,777, 1,693, and 1,720 plants, respectively, of the single, three-way, and double cross hybrids (2009/2010 crop) (six cases). The canonical correlation analyses were carried out between characteristics group of the plant architecture (plant height at harvest and ear insertion height) versus grain production (hundred grains mass and grains mass per plant) (scenario 1), and dimensions of ear (ear length and ear diameter) versus grain production (hundred grains mass and grains mass per plant) (scenario 2). The sample size (number of plants) for the estimation of canonical correlations was determined by resampling with replacement and application of the model linear response with plateau. Measuring 270 plants is sufficient to estimate the canonical correlation between groups with two characteristics in each group for corn. This sample size can be used as reference for reliable canonical correlation analysis.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o tamanho ótimo de parcela e o número de repetições para avaliação da massa de matéria fresca de azevém semeado em filas. Setenta ensaios de uniformidade foram realizados com azevém 'Barjumbo', em 16 unidades experimentais básicas (UEBs) de 0, 51 m 2 cada uma. A massa de matéria fresca do azevém nas UEBs de 18, 18, 6, 6 e 22 ensaios de uniformidade foi determinada, respectivamente, aos 130, 131, 133, 134 e 137 dias após a semeadura. O tamanho ótimo de parcela foi determinado pelo método da máxima curvatura do coeficiente de variação. O número de repetições foi determinado em cenários formados por combinações de número de tratamentos e de diferenças entre médias a serem detectadas como significativas pelo teste de Tukey, a 5% de probabilidade. O tamanho ótimo de parcela oscilou de 1,73 a 3,18 m2, e o coeficiente de variação no tamanho ótimo de parcela de 7,58 a 13,96%. O número de repetições oscilou de 3,95 (~4) a 32,27 (~33), conforme o delineamento, o número de tratamentos e a diferença mínima adotada. O tamanho ótimo de parcela é de 2,29 m2 e, em experimentos com até 50 tratamentos, são necessárias oito repetições para identificar como significativas as diferenças entre médias de tratamentos de 20,24%.

Abstract The objective of this work was to determine the optimal plot size and the number of replicates for the evaluation of the fresh weight of ryegrass sowed in rows. Seventy uniformity trials were performed with 'Barjumbo' ryegrass, in 16 basic experimental units (BEUs) of 0.51 m2 each. The fresh weight of ryegrass in the BEUs of 18, 18, 6, 6, and 22 uniformity trials was determined, respectively, at 130, 131, 133, 134, and 137 days after sowing. The optimal plot size was determined through the method of the maximum curvature of the coefficient of variation. The number of replicates was determined in scenarios formed by combinations of treatments and differences between means to be detected as significant by Tukey’s test, at 5% probabilit y. The optimal plot size ranged from 1.73 to 3.18 m2, and the variation coefficient in the optimal plot size from 7.58 to 13.96%. The number of replicates varied from 3.95 (~4) to 32.27 (~33), depending on the experimental design, the number of treatments, and the adopted minimum difference. The optimal plot size is 2.29 m2, and, in experiments with up to 50 treatments, eight replicates are required to identify as significant the differences between treatment means of 20.24%.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi definir o tamanho ótimo de parcela e o número de repetições para a avaliação da massa de matéria fresca de híbridos de sorgo (Sorghum bicolor). Trinta e dois ensaios de uniformidade foram realizados com dois híbridos, em duas datas de semeadura e quatro períodos de avaliação. Cada ensaio foi dividido em 48 unidades experimentais básicas (UEBs) de 0,5 m2, e a massa de matéria fresca foi determinada para cada UEB. Calcularam-se a média, a variância, o coeficiente de variação, o coeficiente de autocorrelação espacial de primeira ordem, o tamanho ótimo de parcela e o coeficiente de variação do tamanho ótimo de parcela. O número de repetições foi determinado com base no maior tamanho de parcela, por meio de um processo iterativo, para as combinações de número de tratamentos e de diferenças entre médias a serem detectadas como significativas pelo teste de Tukey, a 5% de probabilidade. O tamanho ótimo de parcela oscilou entre 1,79 e 2,58 m2, e o número de repetições entre 2,6 (~3) e 49,2 (~50). Abstract The objective of this work was to define the optimal plot size and number of replicates for the evaluation of the fresh weight of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) hybrids. Thirty-two uniformity trials were carried out with two hybrids, in two sowing dates and four evaluation periods. Each trial was divided into 48 basic experimental units (BEUs) of 0.5 m2, and fresh weight was determined for each BEU. The mean, variance, coefficient of variation, first-order spatial autocorrelation coefficient, optimal plot size, and coefficient of variation of the optimal plot size were calculated. The number of replicates was determined on the basis of the largest calculated plot size, through an iterative process, for the combinations of number of treatments and differences among means to be detected as significant by Tukey’s test, at 5% probability. The optimal plot size ranged from 1.79 to 2.58 m2, and the number of replicates from 2.6 (~3) to 49.2 (~50). The optimal plot size is 2.58 m2, and five replicates are sufficient to identify as significant the differences between treatment means of 35%.

RESUMO: O girassol produz aquênios e óleo de qualidade, além de servir para produção de silagem, forragem e biodiesel. A modelagem de crescimento permite conhecer o padrão de crescimento da cultura e otimizar o manejo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar o crescimento da cultivar de girassol Rhino por meio dos modelos Logístico e Gompertz e fazer considerações a respeito do manejo com base em pontos críticos. Os dados utilizados são oriundos de três ensaios de uniformidade com a cultivar de girassol confeiteiro Rhino, conduzidos na área experimental da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Campus Frederico Westphalen, na safra 2019/2020. Foram realizadas 14, 12 e 10 avaliações semanais de altura em 10 plantas, respectivamente, no primeiro, segundo e terceiro ensaio. Os dados foram ajustados em função da soma térmica acumulada. Os parâmetros foram estimados por meio do método dos mínimos quadrados ordinários, usando o algoritmo de Gauss-Newton. A qualidade de ajuste dos modelos aos dados foi medida pelo coeficiente de determinação ajustado, critério de determinação de Akaike, critério bayesiano de informação, e por meio da não linearidade intrínseca e paramétrica. Foram determinados os pontos de inflexão (IP), máxima aceleração (MAP), máxima desaceleração (MDP) e desaceleração assintótica (ADP). As análises estatísticas foram realizadas com Microsoft Office Excel® e o software R. Os modelos descreveram de forma satisfatória a curva de crescimento da altura do girassol, fornecendo parâmetros com interpretações práticas. O modelo Logístico apresenta melhor qualidade de ajuste, sendo o mais adequado para caracterização da curva de crescimento. Os pontos críticos estimados fornecem informações importantes para o manejo da cultura. As plantas daninhas devem ser controladas até o MAP. As aplicações de fertilizantes em cobertura devem ser realizadas entre MAP e IP. O ADP é um indicador de maturidade, após atingir este ponto, as plantas podem ser colhidas para a produção de silagem sem perda de volume e qualidade.

ABSTRACT: Sunflower produces achenes and oil of good quality, besides serving for production of silage, forage and biodiesel. Growth modeling allows knowing the growth pattern of the crop and optimizing the management. The research characterized the growth of the Rhino sunflower cultivar using the Logistic and Gompertz models and to make considerations regarding management based on critical points. The data used come from three uniformity trials with the Rhino confectionery sunflower cultivar carried out in the experimental area of the Federal University of Santa Maria - Campus Frederico Westphalen in the 2019/2020 agricultural harvest. In the first, second and third trials 14, 12 and 10 weekly height evaluations were performed on 10 plants, respectively. The data were adjusted for the thermal time accumulated. The parameters were estimated by ordinary least square’s method using the Gauss-Newton algorithm. The fitting quality of the models to the data was measured by the adjusted coefficient of determination, Akaike information criterion, Bayesian information criterion, and through intrinsic and parametric nonlinearity. The inflection points (IP), maximum acceleration (MAP), maximum deceleration (MDP) and asymptotic deceleration (ADP) were determined. Statistical analyses were performed with Microsoft Office Excel® and R software. The models satisfactorily described the height growth curve of sunflower, providing parameters with practical interpretations. The Logistics model has the best fitting quality, being the most suitable for characterizing the growth curve. The estimated critical points provide important information for crop management. Weeds must be controlled until the MAP. Covered fertilizer applications must be carried out between the MAP and IP range. ADP is an indicator of maturity, after reaching this point, the plants can be harvested for the production of silage without loss of volume and quality.

RESUMO: Este estudo comparou quatro métodos para definir o tamanho amostral ideal por unidade experimental para estimar a média experimental geral para o comprimento total, comprimento de parte aérea, comprimento de raiz e número de folhas de mudas de couve-flor. Um experimento foi conduzido no qual foram medidos o número de folhas, o comprimento total, de parte aérea e de radícula, e foram testados os métodos: geral, de distâncias perpendiculares, resposta linear platô e spline. Enquanto o método geral pode sub ou superestimar o tamanho amostral e a amostragem de 10 mudas sugerida pelo método spline ainda se encontra muito distante do ponto de estabilização da curva, os métodos de distâncias perpendiculares e resposta linear platô são recomendados por obterem resultados que corresponderam a amplitudes de intervalos de confiança menores. Portanto, de acordo com o método de distâncias perpendiculares, pelo menos 15 mudas por unidade experimental são necessárias para estimar a média experimental geral de mudas de couve-flor confiavelmente para as variáveis aqui mensuradas.

ABSTRACT: This study compared four methods for defining the ideal sample size per experimental unit to estimate the overall experimental mean for the total length, shoot length, root length, and the number of leaves of cauliflower seedlings. An experiment was carried out where the number of leaves, shoot, root, and total length were measured, and the general, perpendicular distance, linear response plateau, and spline methods were tested. While the general method may under or overestimate sample size and the sampling of 10 seedlings suggested by the spline method is still too far from the stabilization point of the curve, the perpendicular distance and linear plateau response methods are recommended to obtain results corresponding to narrower confidence interval widths. Therefore, according to the perpendicular distance method, at least 15 seedlings per experimental unit are required to estimate the overall experimental mean of cauliflower seedlings reliably for the traits here measured.
