RESUMO Objetivo: verificar o gênero, a idade, a localização do zumbido, a presença ou ausência de perda auditiva e seu grau, assim como as medidas psicoacústicas (pitch, loudness, nível mínimo de mascaramento e inibição residual) de pacientes com zumbido crônico e as suas relações. Métodos: o estudo incluiu sujeitos de ambos os gêneros, com idades entre 25 e 85 anos, com queixa de zumbido crônico e que realizassem acompanhamento em ambulatório especializado do Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre. Foram submetidos a anamnese, avaliação audiológica básica, pesquisa de pitch, loudness, inibição residual (IR) e nível mínimo de mascaramento (NMM). Foram utilizados os seguintes testes estatísticos: Teste Qui-Quadrado, Teste Exato de Fisher, Teste U de Wilcoxon - Mann-Whitney, Teste Kruskal Wallis e Coeficiente de Correlação de Spearman. O nível de significância utilizado foi de 5% (p≤0,05). Resultados: houve associação entre a variável tipo de zumbido e presença ou ausência de perda auditiva (PA), grau de PA, NMM e loudness, assim como, entre idade e presença ou ausência de PA e seu grau. A loudness e o NMM apresentaram fraca correlação diretamente proporcional, ao passo que as correlações entre pitch e loudness, pitch e NMM e IR versus NMM apresentaram-se fracas e inversamente proporcionais. Conclusão: houve heterogeneidade entre as características do zumbido e dos indivíduos acometidos. Conclui-se, de acordo com os resultados expostos, que existe influência de algumas variáveis entre si, da mesma maneira que ocorre entre as medidas psicoacústicas.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to verify the sex, age, tinnitus location, presence or absence of hearing loss, its degree, and the psychoacoustic measurements (pitch, loudness, minimum masking level [MML], and residual inhibition [RI]) of patients with chronic tinnitus and their relationships. Methods: the study included subjects of both sexes, aged 25 to 85 years, with complaints of chronic tinnitus, followed up at the health service where the research was conducted. They were submitted to medical history survey, basic audiological assessment, and pitch, loudness, RI, and MML research. The following statistical tests were used: chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Spearman’s correlation coefficient. The significance level was set at 5% (p≤0.05). Results: the type of tinnitus was associated with the presence or absence of hearing loss (HL), degree of HL, MML, and loudness; age was associated with the presence or absence of HL and its degree. There was a directly weak proportional correlation between loudness and MML, whereas the correlations between pitch and loudness, pitch and MML, and RI and MML were weak and inversely proportional. Conclusion: both the affected subjects and their tinnitus characteristics were heterogeneous. The results indicate that some variables influence one another, which also happens between psychoacoustic measurements.

Resumo Introdução: O comprometimento da audição, ou perda auditiva, pode ser ocasionado por diversos fatores e as implicações variam de acordo com o tipo, grau, causa e idade de acometimento. A triagem auditiva deveria ser um procedimento usual que possibilitasse a identificação pré-clínica e os encaminhamentos necessários, evitaria as consequências da privação desse sentido. Aplicativos móveis mostram-se uma boa opção. Objetivo: Desenvolver um aplicativo e verificar seu desempenho na identificação de perda auditiva comparado com outro instrumento de rastreio validado. Método: O aplicativo, chamado Ouviu, foi criado com o conhecimento audiológico e as ferramentas disponíveis na plataforma iOS. Avaliamos 185 pessoas, entre 6 e 96 anos, distribuídas em 5 grupos, fizemos audiometria e rastreio auditivo por meio de dois instrumentos: HearCheck e aplicativo. Resultados: Ficou evidenciado que a sensibilidade do aplicativo para identificar perda auditiva foi aproximadamente 97%, enquanto a do HearCheck foi 79%. O valor preditivo positivo do aplicativo mostrou que a probabilidade de uma pessoa ser identificada com esse instrumento e realmente ter perda auditiva foi 94%, o HearCheck foi de 96%. Os falsos negativos, que deixaram de identificar perda auditiva, foram menores no aplicativo (3%) que no HearCheck (21%). Conclusão: O aplicativo desenvolvido mostrou-se eficaz como uma ferramenta de rastreio auditivo. É melhor do que HearCheck na identificação de perda auditiva leve. Além de ser portátil, de fácil aplicação, baixo custo e rápida execução, o aplicativo tem a vantagem de avaliar o ruído ambiental para fazer o exame e também a não necessidade de quaisquer hardwares para acoplar ao dispositivo móvel.

Abstract Introduction: Hearing impairment, or hearing loss, can be caused by several factors and the implications vary according to the type, degree, cause and age of occurrence. Hearing screening should be a common procedure, allowing the pre-clinical identification and necessary referrals, avoiding the consequences of auditory deprivation. Mobile apps have shown to be a good alternative for hearing assessment. Objective: The objective was to develop an app and assess its performance in identifying hearing loss by comparing it with another validated screening tool. Methods: The application, called Ouviu, was created using audiological knowledge and tools available on the iOS platform. We evaluated 185 people, aged between 6 and 96 years, distributed into 5 age groups, performing audiometry and hearing screening using two tools: HearCheck and the application. Results: The results showed that the sensitivity of the application in identifying hearing loss was approximately 97%, while that of HearCheck was 79%. The positive predictive value of the application showed that the probability of a person being identified with this tool and actually having a hearing loss was 94%, while for HearCheck it was 96%. False negatives, which failed hearing loss identification, were fewer in the app (3%) than in HearCheck (21%). Conclusion: Consequently, the developed application was shown to be effective as a hearing screening tool, surpassing HearCheck in identifying mild hearing loss. In addition to being portable, easy to apply, low cost and rapidly performed, the application has the advantage of assessing environmental noise to perform the exam, as well as the fact that it is not necessary to attach any hardware to the mobile device.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar o uso e os motivos para o não uso do Sistema de Frequência Modulada (FM) por crianças e adolescentes com perda auditiva e usuários de aparelhos de amplificação sonora individual (AASI) e/ou com implante coclear (IC). Métodos Foi aplicado um questionário em forma de entrevista, por meio de contato telefônico. As questões foram retiradas do questionário FM Listening Evaluation for Children, traduzido e adaptado para a língua portuguesa por Jacob et al. (2010) e denominado Avaliação do Sistema FM, bem como outras três perguntas elaboradas pelos pesquisadores. Resultados Foram entrevistados 87 pais/responsáveis, verificando-se que o sistema FM era utilizadopor menos da metade da amostra. Quanto à mediana de uso de horas diárias do sistema, observou-se diferença nos pacientes com FM no IC, que usavam o dispositivo por maior número de horas diárias, do que os usuários de AASI. Igualmente apresentou diferença estatística o principal motivo para onão uso, relacionado ao fato de os pacientes terem recebido novos AASI e/ou IC incompatíveis com a tecnologia obtida anteriormente. Ainda, os entrevistados gostariam que lhes fossem fornecidas melhores orientações. Conclusão a maior parte dos pacientes não utiliza o sistema FM, sendo o principal motivo o uso de novos AASI e/ou IC. Os pacientes com IC usam o FM de forma mais efetiva (diariamente).

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze de use and reasons for not using of FM systems by children and adolescents with hearing loss and users of hearing aids (HA) and or cochlear implant (CI). Methods A questionnaire applied in the form of an a interview through telephone contact was used. The questions were removed from the questionnaire “FM Listening Evaluation for children”, translated and adapted for Portuguese language by Jacob et al. (2010) and named “Avaliação do Sistema FM”, and three other questions prepared by the researchers. Results 87 parents/guardians were interviewed, and it was verified that less than half of the sample used the FM system. As for the median use of the FM systems daily hours, there was a statistical difference in patients with FM in CI, Who used the device for a greater number of daily hours than hearing AID users. The main reason for non-use also presented statistical difference to the fact that patients have received new hearing aids and/or CI incompatible with previously obtained. Also, respondents would like the guidance provided improved. Conclusion Most patients did not use the FM system, the main reason being the usage of new hearing aids and/or CI. Patients with CI use FM more effectively (daily).

RESUMO Objetivo: avaliar o programa de triagem auditiva neonatal universal por meio de indicadores de qualidade. Métodos: foram analisados os registros de recém-nascidos que realizaram triagem auditiva neonatal em 2018, comparando-se os dados aos cinco primeiros indicadores de qualidade definidos pela diretriz nacional de atenção à triagem auditiva neonatal: 1°) índice de cobertura de triagem (≥95%); 2°) idade em meses na realização da triagem (até o 1° mês de vida); 3°) índice de encaminhados para diagnóstico (2% a 4%); 4°) índice de comparecimento ao diagnóstico (≥90%) e 5°) idade na conclusão do diagnóstico (até o 3° mês de vida). Os dados foram analisados de forma estatística quantitativa descritiva. Resultados: indicadores de cobertura; idade na realização da triagem e número de encaminhamentos para diagnóstico ficaram dentro do estabelecido pela diretriz nacional. Índice de comparecimento ao diagnóstico ficou abaixo do esperado e a idade na conclusão do diagnóstico foi registrada para 70% dos casos. Conclusão: o uso de indicadores de qualidade forneceu dados importantes sobre a efetividade do programa de triagem auditiva neonatal, assim como identificou oportunidades de melhoria no serviço, as quais podem contribuir na identificação precoce da deficiência auditiva.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to assess the universal neonatal hearing screening program using quality indicators. Methods: the records of newborns who were submitted to the neonatal hearing screening in 2018 were analyzed, comparing the data with the first five quality indicators established by the national guideline for neonatal hearing screening attention: 1) rate of screening coverage (≥95%); 2) age at the screening in months (up to the first month of life); 3) rate of referrals for diagnosis (2% to 4%); 4) rate of attendance to diagnostic examination (≥90%); 5) age at confirmed diagnosis (up to the third month of life). The data were submitted to quantitative and descriptive statistical analysis. Results: the rate of coverage, age at screening, and the number of referrals for diagnosis met the indicators established by the national guideline. The rate of attendance to diagnostic examination fell short of the expected, and the age at confirmed diagnosis was verified in 70% of the cases. Conclusion: using the quality indicators furnished important data on the effectiveness of the neonatal hearing screening program and identified opportunities to improve the service, which can help identify hearing loss, early.

Resumo Introdução: As evidências de prováveis efeitos de otite média com efusão precoce no proces-samento auditivo central, ressaltam a necessidade de se considerar tais efeitos também em sujeitos com otite média crônica. Objetivo: Investigar e analisar o impacto da otite média crônica não colesteatomatosa no processamento auditivo central em adolescentes. Método: Estudo para o qual foram recrutados 68 adolescentes, 34 com diagnóstico de otite média crônica não colesteatomatosa (grupo de estudo) e 34 sem história otológica (grupo controle). A avaliação dos indivíduos consistiu de: anamnese, audiometria do limiar auditivo para tons puros, audiometria vocal e bateria de testes comportamentais para avaliação do processamento auditivo central. Resultados: Foi encontrada uma diferença estatisticamente significante entre as médias observadas nos grupos de estudo e controle em todos os testes. Foi encontrada uma associação entre o grupo controle e os subgrupos do grupo de estudo com alterações unilaterais em todos os testes. Houve associação entre os resultados dos grupos controle e de estudo para a renda familiar, com maior impacto nos indivíduos com menor renda. Conclusões: A otite média crônica não colesteatomatosa afeta o processamento auditivo central em adolescentes, a audição monoaural de baixa redundância é o mecanismo auditivo mais afetado. Alterações condutivas unilaterais causam mais danos do que as bilaterais e a menor renda familiar parece conduzir a mais alterações no processamento auditivo central de indivíduos com otite média crônica não colesteatomatosa.

Abstract Introduction: Evidences of possible effects of early age otitis media with effusion in the central auditory processing, emphasize the need to consider such effects also in subjects with chronic otitis media. Aim: To investigate and analyze the impact of non-cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media on central auditory processing in teenagers. Methods: This is a study in which 68 teenagers were recruited, 34 with a diagnosis of non-cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media (study group) and 34 without otological disease history (control group). The evaluation of the subjects consisted of: anamnesis, pure-tone threshold audiometry, speech audiometry and a behavioral test battery for assessment of central auditory processing. Results: A statistically significant difference was found between the means observed in the study and control groups in all tests performed. An association was found between the control group and subgroups of the study group with unilateral alterations in all tests. An association was shown between the results for the control group and study group for family income, with a greater impact on subjects with a lower income. Conclusions: Non-cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media affects the central auditory processing in teenagers suffering from the disorder, and monaural low-redundancy hearing is the most affected auditory mechanism. Unilateral conductive changes cause more damage than bilateral ones, and lower family income seems to lead to more changes to the central auditory processing of subjects with non-cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar benefícios do uso de próteses auditivas na autopercepção do zumbido em adultos e idosos sem experiência prévia de amplificação. Métodos O estudo incluiu indivíduos de ambos os sexos, com queixa de zumbido, acompanhados em hospital público. Aplicaram-se os seguintes exames e instrumentos para mensurar o zumbido e determinar o seu incômodo: pesquisa do pitch e loudness, Escala Visual Analógica (EVA), pesquisa do nível mínimo de mascaramento, inibição residual e Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI). As avaliações foram realizadas em duas etapas: antes da adaptação das próteses auditivas e após um mês de uso dos aparelhos. Resultados Dos 20 indivíduos participantes, 60% eram idosos. Verificou-se diferença na autopercepção do zumbido pré e pós-protetização, medido pelas escalas THI e EVA. Também se observaram diferenças nas medidas psicoacústicas, com exceção do pitch, antes e após a amplificação. Além disso, houve correlação entre o tempo de zumbido e a idade com os escores finais do THI. Conclusão O uso de próteses auditivas reduziu o incômodo provocado pelo zumbido, com alteração nas medidas psicoaústicas e no impacto na qualidade de vida.

ABSTRACT Purpose To verify the benefits of using hearing aids in self-perception of tinnitus in adults and elderly without previous experience of amplification. Methods The study included individuals of both gender, with tinnitus complaint, accompanied in public hospital. The following tests and instruments were used to measure tinnitus and determine its discomfort: pitch and loudness, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), minimum masking level, residual inhibition and Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI). The evaluations were performed in two stages: before the adaptation of the hearing aids and after one month of use of the devices. Results Of the 20 participants, 60% were elderly. There was a difference in self-perception of tinnitus before and after hearing aid fitting, as measured by THI and VAS. Differences in psychoacoustic measures were also observed, with the exception of pitch, before and after amplification. In addition, there was a correlation between tinnitus time and age with final THI scores. Conclusion The use of hearing aids was determined to reduce the annoyance caused by tinnitus, with changes in psycho-acoustic measures and impact on quality of life.

RESUMO As quedas são consideradas um problema de saúde pública e a atividade física é uma estratégia eficaz para preveni-la. O objetivo foi avaliar o efeito de um programa de atividade física na aptidão física, medo de cair e qualidade de vida em grupos de idosos com e sem quedas. Estudo realizado com participantes de um programa multicomponente de atividade física em uma universidade do Brasil, divididos em: caidores (n = 25) e não caidores (n = 133). Foram avaliados através do Senior Fitness Test, Falls Efficacy Scale-International Brasil e do The Medical Outcomes Study 36. A média, o desvio padrão, o teste t de Student e o tamanho do efeito foram realizados. Houve diferença entre os indivíduos caidores e não caidores na FLEXMI (p=0,05), FMS (p=0,04), RA (p=0,03), FES (p=0,00), SF36 (p=0,00). O grupo não caidor melhorou a aptidão física. O pré teste do grupo caidor mostrou aumento do medo de cair em comparação com o grupo não caidor. O programa de atividade física não influenciou o medo de cair em nenhum dos grupos. A qualidade de vida apresentou melhores resultados no grupo não caidor, com variação em alguns aspectos entre os grupos e ao longo do tempo. Idosos com história prévia de quedas necessitam de um programa físico diferenciado.

ABSTRACT Falls are considered a public health problem and physical activity is an effective strategy to prevent fall. The goal of this study was to assess the effect of a physical activity program on physical fitness, fear of falling and quality of life in groups of faller and non-faller older adults. Study was conducted with participants of a multicomponent program of physical activity at a university in Brazil. The participants were assigned to: faller (n=25) and non-faller (n=133) groups. Participants were assessed using the Senior Fitness Test, Falls Efficacy Scale-International Brasil and The Medical Outcomes Study 36. Mean, standard deviation, Student “t” test and effect size were conducted. There was a difference between faller and non-faller individuals at LLFLEX (p=0,05), LLS (p=0,04), BA (p=0,03), FES (p=0,00), SF36 (p=0,00). The group of non-faller elderly people improved physical fitness. The pre test of the faller group showed increased fear of falling in comparison to the non-faller group. The physical activity program did not influence fear of falling in any of the groups. The quality of life showed better results in the non-faller group, with variation in some aspects between groups and over time. Elderly people with a previous history of falls need a differentiated physical program.

RESUMO Objetivos Analisar as publicações científicas sobre audição em indivíduos com osteogênese imperfeita. Estratégias de pesquisa Trata-se de revisão sistemática de literatura. Foram selecionados os descritores Hearing OR Hearing Loss AND Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Duas revisoras consultaram as bases de dados Cochrane Library, PubMed, LILACS, Scopus e Embase. Critérios de seleção utilizaram-se os Descritores em Ciências da Saúde, não sendo delimitado período de publicação dos estudos. Foram critérios de inclusão estudos de coorte, seguimento, transversais, casos controle e em idioma inglês. Foram critérios de exclusão artigos editoriais, relatos/séries de casos, resumos de eventos e estudos conduzidos em animais. Os estudos selecionados foram analisados pela Iniciativa STROBE e pelo Sistema GRADE. Resultados Dos 652 estudos obtidos, foram selecionados 16. A perda auditiva do tipo condutiva foi o tipo mais comum na população com osteogênese imperfeita (OI) e seu início ocorre por volta da segunda década de vida. A definição e a classificação para aferição de perda auditiva, nas publicações com a população com osteogênese imperfeita, apresentaram discordância entre os estudos. Conclusão Esta revisão respondeu às perguntas a que se propôs, constatando que as alterações audiológicas encontradas em pacientes com OI são do tipo condutivo, neurossensorial e misto. Alterações condutivas são mais comuns em pacientes mais jovens e alterações neurossensoriais, em pacientes mais velhos. A Iniciativa STROBE apontou itens descritos de forma parcial e o Sistema GRADE concluiu que os estudos apresentaram alguma falha metodológica.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze scientific publications on the hearing issue of patients with osteogenesis imperfecta. Reserch strategy This study is a systematic literature review. The following descriptors were selected “Hearing” OR “Hearing Loss” AND “Osteogenesis Imperfecta”. Two reviewers searched the Cochrane Library, Pubmed, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, Scopus and Embase databases. Selection criteria Descriptors in Health Sciences were used and the publication period of studies was not limited. Inclusion criteria were cohort, follow-up, cross-sectional, and control studies in English language. Exclusion criteria were editorial articles, case reports, case summaries, and animal studies. Selected studies were analyzed by the STROBE Initiative and the GRADE System. Results Of the 652 studies, 16 were selected. Conductive hearing loss is the most common type in the osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) population and its onset is around the second decade of life. Definition and classification for hearing loss measurement in publications with the osteogenesis imperfecta population present disparities among studies. Conclusion This review met the objectives proposed, concluding that audiological alterations found in OI patients are of conductive, sensorineural and mixed types; conductive alterations are more common in younger patients and sensorineural alterations in older ones. The STROBE initiative partially pointed out described items and the GRADE system concluded that studies present some methodological failure.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar os motivos e o tempo médio de reposição de próteses auditivas em usuários atendidos no sistema de alta complexidade em saúde auditiva, em um hospital no Sul do Brasil. Métodos Realizou-se consulta aos prontuários dos pacientes (crianças, adultos e idosos) que receberam próteses auditivas por meio do programa de saúde auditiva, no período de janeiro de 2010 a julho de 2017. Foi verificado o motivo da reposição, o número de reposições e o tempo de reposição para cada uma das orelhas. Os dados foram analisados de forma quantitativa, utilizando-se os testes qui-quadrado de Pearson ou exato de Fisher, com nível de significância de 0,05. Resultados Foram analisados 1.256 prontuários de crianças, adultos e idosos. O principal motivo de reposição foi por falha técnica. Nas crianças, o tempo médio da primeira reposição foi menor do que nos adultos e nos idosos. Adultos e idosos formaram o grupo que mais buscou o serviço para realização da primeira reposição de seus dispositivos. As crianças formaram o grupo que mais precisou da segunda e da terceira reposições. Conclusão Trezentos e quarenta e dois pacientes necessitaram repor, no mínimo uma vez, seus dispositivos, tendo como principal motivo a falha técnica. O tempo médio entre a adaptação e a primeira reposição foi de aproximadamente quatro anos.

ABSTRACT Purpose To verify the causes and the average time of hearing aids replacement of patients of a high complexity system in hearing health in a hospital in the south of Brazil. Methods Electronic charts of patients (children, adults and elders), who received hearing aids through the hearing health program from 2010 to 2017, were analyzed. It was verified the causes, the number, and the average time of replacement, in each of patients’ ears. Data were analyzed quantitatively using Pearson's chi-square test or Fisher's exact test, with a significance level at 0.05. Results 1.256 charts of children, adults and elders were analyzed. The main cause of replacement was due to technical failure. In children the average time of replacement was shorter than in adults and the elders. Adults and elders were the groups that needed more replacements. Children’s group was the group that needed more than one replacement. Conclusion Technical failure was the main reason why users seek the service to perform a replacement of their devices, and the average time between adaptation and the first replacement was of approximately four years.

Resumo A privação auditiva associada à otite média precoce com efusão tem sido considerada um fator de risco para o processamento auditivo central (CAP), bem como para o desenvolvimento de diversas funções cognitivas. Objetivo: Estudar as funções neuropsicológicas da atenção, memória de trabalho e função executiva em adolescentes com e sem otite média crônica não-colesteatomatosa (NCCOM) e analisar suas inter-relações com a avaliação comportamental da PAC. Métodos: Sessenta e oito adolescentes foram recrutados, 34 foram diagnosticados com NCCOM (grupo de estudo - GE) e 34 não tinham história otológica (grupo controle - GC). Utilizou-se o Instrumento de Avaliação Neuropsicológica Breve de Neupsilin. O CAP foi avaliado por: Diferença de Nível de Mascaramento, Identificação de Frase Sintética, Teste de Detecção de Intervalo Aleatório, Teste de Sequência de Padrão de Duração e Teste de Dígitos Dicóticos. Resultados: Os resultados de Neupsilin mostraram menores escores no grupo de estudo quando comparados ao grupo controle nos seguintes testes: repetição de sequência de dígitos, ordenação de dígitos ascendentes, extensão de sentenças auditivas e fluência verbal fonêmica. Foi encontrada uma associação entre os testes do processamento auditivo central e os subtestes de Neupsilin. Conclusão: Os efeitos do NCCOM na atenção, memória e função executiva relacionados ao transtorno do processamento auditivo central em adolescentes parecem ser potencializados pela gravidade da doença.

Abstract Auditory deprivation associated with early otitis media with effusion has been considered a risk factor for central auditory processing (CAP), as well as for the development of a number of cognitive functions. Objective: To study the neuropsychological functions of attention, working memory and executive function in adolescents with and without non-cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media (NCCOM) and analyze their interrelationships with the behavioral evaluation of CAP. Methods: Sixty-eight adolescents were recruited, 34 were diagnosed with NCCOM (study group - SG), and 34 had no otological history (control group - CG). The Neupsilin Brief Neuropsychological Assessment Instrument was used. CAP was assessed by: Masking Level Difference, Synthetic Sentence Identification, Random Gap Detection Test, Duration Pattern Sequence Test and Dichotic Digits Test. Results: The results of Neupsilin showed lower scores in the study group when compared to the control group on the following tests: digit sequence repetition, ascending digit ordering, auditory sentence span, and phonemic verbal fluency. An association was found between central auditory processing tests and Neupsilin subtests. Conclusion: The effects of NCCOM on attention, memory and executive function related to central auditory processing disorder in adolescents seem to be enhanced by the severity of the disease.

RESUMO Introdução Aparelhos portáteis realizam triagem que identifica possíveis alterações auditivas, permitindo maior número de beneficiados. Além disso, questionários de autoavaliação podem oferecer panorama da percepção que o idoso tem do seu problema. Objetivo Verificar se os resultados da triagem auditiva em idosos se relacionam com a percepção da restrição de participação social e se existe influência da idade, gênero e escolaridade, nas variáveis. Métodos Estudo transversal realizado com idosos em dois centros de convivência. Foi realizada uma anamnese, em que constavam dados de identificação, idade e escolaridade. Foi realizada a inspeção visual do meato acústico externo e, em seguida, a triagem auditiva, utilizando equipamento portátil. Em forma de entrevista, aplicou-se o questionário Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly – Screening Version (HHIE-S), constituído de 10 questões e dividido em duas escalas, a social e a emocional, cada uma composta de cinco questões. Os dados foram tabulados e analisados estatisticamente. Resultados Foram avaliados 64 idosos, de ambos os gêneros, com média de idade de 70 anos e 8 meses. Destes, 48 (75%) apresentaram-se sem percepção de restrição, 12 (18,75%), com percepção leve a moderada e quatro (6,25%), com percepção significante, segundo classificação do questionário. Os resultados da triagem e do questionário não foram influenciados pelo gênero e pela escolaridade. A idade também não influenciou a pontuação do questionário, porém, houve associação da idade com a triagem e também houve associação entre a triagem auditiva e o questionário. Conclusão Idosos que “falharam” na triagem auditiva apresentaram maior pontuação no questionário e idosos mais velhos apresentaram piores resultados na triagem auditiva.

ABSTRACT Introduction Portable equipment can now perform screenings that identify possible hearing loss, allowing a greater number of people to be evaluated. Self-assessment questionnaires may also provide an overview of the elderly’s perception of their problem. Purpose To examine if the hearing-screening results in the elderly are related to their perceived restriction in social participation, and whether they are influenced by age, gender and schooling. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out with elderly people of two cohabitation centers. Medical history and participant details were collected, including name, age, and schooling data. Visual inspection of the external auditory meatus and hearing screening using portable equipment were then performed. The Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly – Screening Version (HHIE-S) questionnaire was then administered in the form of an interview. The HHIE-S consists of ten questions divided into two scales—social and emotional - each composed of five questions. The data were then statistically analyzed. Results Sixty-four elderly people, comprising men and women, with a mean age of 70 years and 8 months, were evaluated. Of these, 48 (75%) were classified as without perceived restriction, 12 (18.75%) with mild to moderate perceived restriction, and four (6.25%) with significant perceived restriction, according to the questionnaire criteria. The screening and questionnaire results were not influenced by gender and schooling. Age did not influence the questionnaire score, but was associated with the hearing-screening outcome. There was a relationship between hearing screening and scores on the questionnaire. Conclusion Elderly patients who “failed” the hearing screening had higher scores in the questionnaire and older adults had worse hearing-screening results.

Resumo Introdução: A audição é essencial para o processamento de eventos acústicos e emissão e compreensão dos sinais de fala. A perda auditiva pode estar associada ao declínio cognitivo, à depressão e à redução da funcionalidade. Objetivo: Analisar a prevalência de queixa auditiva em idosos do Rio Grande do Sul e descrever o perfil dos participantes com e sem queixa auditiva. Método: Participaram do estudo 7.315 idosos entrevistados em suas residências, em 59 cidades gaúchas. Os critérios de inclusão adotados foram ter 60 anos ou mais e terem respondido à questão sobre autopercepção auditiva. Para fins estatísticos foi realizado o teste Qui-quadrado e regressão logística para avaliar as correlações entre as variáveis. Resultados: Foram excluídos 139 idosos sem resposta à autopercepção auditiva e nove por autorreferirem surdez (7.167 participantes). A frequência de queixa de perda auditiva foi de 28% (2011) dos idosos, apresentou diferença entre gêneros, etnia, renda, participação social. A média de idade dos idosos sem queixa auditiva foi de 69,44 (± 6,91) e com queixa 72,8 (± 7,75) anos. Os idosos sem queixa auditiva apresentaram 5,10 (± 3,78) anos de estudo comparados com 4,48 (± 3,49) anos dos com queixa. A regressão logística múltipla observou que foram fatores protetores para a queixa auditiva maior escolaridade, contribuir na renda familiar e ter recebido atendimento de saúde nos últimos seis meses. Fatores de risco para a queixa auditiva foram idade mais avançada, sexo masculino, apresentar dificuldade de sair de casa e realizar atividades sociais. Conclusões Na população idosa do Rio Grande do Sul a prevalência de queixa auditiva atingiu 28%. A queixa está mais presente em idosos homens, sem participação na renda familiar, não receberam atendimento de saúde, tinham atividade social e comunitária, com menor escolaridade e maior idade.

Abstract Introduction: Hearing is essential for the processing of acoustic information and the understanding of speech signals. Hearing loss may be associated with cognitive decline, depression and reduced functionality. Objective: To analyze the prevalence of hearing complaints in elderly individuals from Rio Grande do Sul and describe the profile of the study participants with and without hearing complaints. Methods: 7315 elderly individuals interviewed in their homes, in 59 cities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, participated in the study. Inclusion criteria were age 60 years or older and answering the question on auditory self-perception. For statistical purposes, the chi-square test and logistic regression were performed to assess the correlations between variables. Results: 139 elderly individuals who did not answer the question on auditory self-perception and 9 who self-reported hearing loss were excluded, totaling 7167 elderly participants. Hearing loss complaint rate was 28% (2011) among the elderly, showing differences between genders, ethnicity, income, and social participation. The mean age of the elderly without hearing complaints was 69.44 (±6.91) and among those with complaint, 72.8 (±7.75) years. Elderly individuals without hearing complaints had 5.10 (±3.78) years of formal education compared to 4.48 (±3.49) years among those who had complaints. Multiple logistic regression observed that protective factors for hearing complaints were: higher level of schooling, contributing to the family income and having received health care in the last six months. Risk factors for hearing complaints were: older age, male gender, experiencing difficulty in leaving home and carrying out social activities. Conclusions: Among the elderly population of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the prevalence of hearing complaints reached 28%. The complaint is more often present in elderly men who did not participate in the generation of family income, who did not receive health care, performed social and community activities, had a lower level of schooling and were older.

Abstract Introduction Tinnitus is a symptom that affects mainly the elderly and can negatively influence their quality of life. Objective The objective of our study is to evaluate the existence of a relationship between the quality of life and the impact caused by tinnitus in elderly individuals, considering the age and gender variables. Method We conducted a cross-sectional study in elderly people of both genders who participate in the extension activities at the university. The evaluation was composed of anamnesis and WHOQOL-OLD instruments, to evaluate the quality of life, and Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) for the evaluation of the tinnitus impact. Result We evaluated 36 elderly individuals with an average age of 68.6 ± 6.8 years old, 72.2 % of them were women. We verified that most of the subjects classified their tinnitus as weak (44.4%) ormedium (36.1%). The score average in the THI was 20 points, with predominant classification of tinnitus impact as negligible (41.7%) or mild (30.6%). In the WHOQOL-OLD, the average score was 15.6 ± 1.6 points (total score). The negative correlation between the THI score and the WHOQOL-OLD score was found in the sensory domain operation and total score. Conclusion The results obtained in the study prove that the quality of life of the elderly individuals evaluated is related to a discomfort caused by the tinnitus.

RESUMO O objetivo do estudo foi analisar os efeitos de um programa físico de equilíbrio em variáveis associadas às quedas em idosos. Participaram do programa 17 indivíduos com média de idade de 75,73 anos. Foram utilizados os testes de apoio unipodal (AU), TimedUpand Go (TUG), alcance funcional (AF), força (FMI), flexibilidade de membros inferiores (FLEXMI) e o questionário FES-I. Para a análise dos dados utilizou-se o teste de Wilcoxon (p≤0,05) para comparação entre os dois momentos de avaliação. Para a análise da classificação dos testes de equilíbrio utilizou-se cálculos de distribuição (frequência e percentual) dos períodos pré e pós-treinamento. Os resultados apontaram mudança estatística significante entre o período pré e pós-treinamento nas variáveis AU, TUG e FLEXMI. A classificação dos resultados indicou melhora no pós-teste, havendo assim uma tendência na melhora do equilíbrio após o treinamento, auxiliando na prevenção de quedas.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of a balanced program for preventing falls in the elderly. The sample consisted of 17 subjects (age: 75.73 ± 8.57). The tests used were one foot (AU), Timed Up and Go (TUG), functional reach (AF), strength (IMF) and flexibility of the lower limbs (FLEXMI) of Rikli and 19 Jones (1999) protocol, FES-I questionnaire. For data analysis we used the comparative statistics with the Wilcoxon test (p = 0.05) between pre and post-test. For the analysis of the classification of balance tests we used distribution calculations (frequency and percentage). There was no statistically significant change between the pre and post-training in the variables AU, TUG and FLEXMI. The classification of the results showed improved post-test, showing a tendency to improve balance after training and helping to prevent falls

RESUMO Introdução A integração social é dificultada pela perda auditiva. Objetivo Verificar o benefício, a satisfação e a percepção da restrição de participação social, em função da perda auditiva, em adultos e idosos usuários de aparelho de amplificação sonora individual (AASI), bem como averiguar a correlação entre essas medidas. Métodos O estudo incluiu indivíduos de ambos os sexos, acompanhados em hospital público. Solicitou-se aos participantes que atribuíssem uma nota de 1 a 10 para sua audição, antes e após adaptação de AASI. Aplicaram-se os seguintes instrumentos para mensuração da restrição de participação social e da satisfação com o uso de AASI: International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids (IOI-HA) e Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults (HHIA), nos adultos, e Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly Screening Version (HHIE-S), nos idosos. O nível de significância estatística adotado foi de 5%. Resultados Dos 42 indivíduos participantes, 64,3% eram idosos. As pontuações dos instrumentos IOI-HA total, seus fatores 1 e 2 e o HHIE-S apresentaram correlação com a Escala de Classificação Numérica (ECN), antes da amplificação. Houve correlação entre o instrumento IOI-HA total e seu fator 2 com o HHIE-S, HHIA total e domínios emocional e social. Conclusão Adultos e idosos demonstraram satisfação com seus AASI e não houve diferença entre os grupos. Quanto mais acentuado o grau da perda auditiva, melhor foi a autopercepção da audição pós-adaptação de AASI. Quanto menor a restrição de participação, mais os benefícios do uso de AASI foram percebidos pelos usuários.

ABSTRACT Introduction Social integration is hampered by hearing loss. Purpose To identify the benefit and assess the satisfaction with the use of hearing aids and perception of limited social participation caused by hearing loss in adult and elderly hearing aids users. Another aim is to check whether there is a correlation between such measures. Methods The study included both male and female individuals who were assisted in a public hospital. The participants were asked to assign a score between 1 and 10 to their hearing level before and after starting to use hearing aids. They answered instruments that measure social participation restriction and satisfaction with use of hearing aids: the International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids (IOI-HA), the Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults (HHIA) or the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly Screening Version (HHIE-S). Statistical analysis was performed. The level of statistical significance was 5%. Results Of the 42 individuals, 64.3% were elderly. IOI-HA total instrument scores, its factors 1 and 2 and HHIE-S presented a correlation with the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) before amplification. There was correlation between the total IOI-HA instrument and its factor 2 with HHIE-S, total HHIA emotional and social domains. Conclusion Adults and elderly are satisfied with their hearing aid, and there was no difference between both groups. There is a directly inverse relationship between hearing loss levels and self-perception of hearing loss after hearing aid fitting. Also, the less restricted social participation is, the more benefits of using hearing aids are perceived by users.
