RESUMO No setor florestal, os modelos de crescimento e incremento são utilizados para predizer o crescimento de uma árvore, de um povoamento ou de uma floresta. Nas florestas heterogêneas e de várias idades do Rio Grande do Sul, modelos de árvores individuais são apropriados. O presente trabalho foi estabelecido para contribuir para a formulação de um modelo de incremento de uma espécie da Floresta Estacional Decidual do Rio Grande do Sul: a Nectandra megapotamica. A coleta de dados foi realizada no distrito de Vale Vêneto, próximo a Santa Maria, nos anos de 1994 e 1997. A vegetação foi classificada em diferentes estágios sucessionais e nesses estágios, instaladas unidades amostrais permanentes (uap). Em cada uap, todas as árvores com DAP ≥ 5 cm foram identificadas, numeradas e medidas. Adicionalmente, a posição sociológica e variáveis do sítio foram estimadas. Em cada uap, calcularam-se a área basal individual, área basal por ha e área basal das árvores maiores que a concorrida (BAL). Em seguida, estabeleceram-se funções de crescimento utilizando o procedimento stepwise. A fórmula geral do modelo é: Incremento (g/ano) = f (Dimensões, Concorrência, Sítio). O melhor modelo para Nectandra megapotamica é: ICA = 0,002084 + 0,000001039 x DAP² - 0,0003498 x Degradação - 0,000375 x P.S. - 0,00000904 x Pedregosidade - 0,0000103 x BAL.

ABSTRACT Sustainable forest management requires knowledge of forest stock and future growth of forests. In the forest sector growth models are used to predict the growth of trees, stands or forests. In heterogeneous unevenaged forests of Rio Grande do Sul, models on an individual tree basis are appropriate. The present work was established to contribute to the formulation of growth models for one species of the seasonal deciduous forests of Rio Grande do Sul: Nectandra megapotamica. Sampling was realized in the district of Vale Vêneto, near Santa Maria in the years of 1994 and 1997. Vegetation was classified into different successional stages and within these permanent sample plots (uap) were installed. In every sample plot the trees with diameter at breast height above 5 cm were identified, numerated and measured. Additionally, the sociological position and site parameters were estimated. In every uap individual basal area increment, basal area per ha and basal area larger (BAL), as competition indexes, were calculated. Then growth equations were established by using the ‘stepwise’ procedure. The general formulation of the model is: Increment (g/year) = f (dimension, competition, site). The best model for Nectandra megapotamica is: ICA = 0,002084 + 0,000001039 x DBH² - 0,0003498 x Degradation - 0,000375 x Sociological position - 0,00000904 x Soil stonyty - 0,0000103 x BAL.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivos estudar o crescimento em altura dominante para Pinus elliottii e Pinus taeda, mediante comparações entre as curvas de índice de sítio construídas para algumas regiões do estado do Rio Grande do Sul e outros Estados da Federação. Essas comparações indicaram que as curvas feitas por Tonini (2000) para as regiões da Serra do Sudeste e Litoral no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, não apresentaram o mesmo desenvolvimento em relação às curvas feitas por Scolforo e Machado (1988), para os estados do Paraná e Santa Catarina; Brasil (1989a), para a região de Passo Fundo RS, Marcolin (1990), para o Segundo Planalto Paranaense e Selle (1993), para a região de Cambará do Sul. No entanto, o comportamento em relação às curvas de índice de sítio feitas por Brasil (1989b), para a região de São Francisco de Paula mostraram-se semelhantes, havendo somente uma diferença de nível entre estas.

ABSTRACT This research had as main objective to study the dominant height growth of Pinus elliottii and Pinus taeda through site index curves comparisons in some regions of Rio Grande do Sul State and other states of the country. These comparisons showed that the site index curves made by Tonini (2000), for the southeastern mountain and coast land in Rio Grande do Sul State did not show the same pattern of those by Scolforo e Machado (1988), for Paraná and Santa Catarina, Brazil (1989a) for Passo Fundo RS, Marcolin (1990), for the Parana’s Second Upland and Selle (1993) for Cambará do Sul RS. However, the same growth pattern was observed for curves by Brasil (1989b) for São Francisco de Paula which only level differences were observed.

RESUMO Realizou-se um estudo do crescimento em altura dominante de Pinus elliottii em povoamentos com idades entre 18 e 21 anos, localizados em três Unidades de Mapeamento de Solo, em quatro municípios, nas unidades de relevo Serra do Sudeste e Planície Gaúcha, no estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Os pares de dados altura e idade, oriundos de análise de tronco, foram ajustados pelo modelo de Richards. A construção de curvas de índice de sítio para cada local, indicou que a tendência de crescimento entre os locais estudados foi semelhante, o que permitiu o seu agrupamento e a geração de um ú nico conjunto de 9 curvas monomórficas para os índices de sítio de 6 a 30 m, tendo como idade de referência 18 anos.

ABSTRACT Dominant height growth of Pinus elliottii was analized in four stands at ages between 18 and 21 years old on three mapping soil units in the southeastern mountain region and coastal plains of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Dominant height and age data were fitted using the Richards function. The site index curves, which were established for each locality, indicated that there was no difference in growth between the localities. This allowed to group all the curves to a unique system of 9 monomorphic curves for the site index between 6 and 30 m at the reference age of 18 years old.

RESUMO Com uma abordagem retrospectiva, foi estudado o crescimento da caúna-da-serra (Ilex brevicuspis Reissek.), cocão (Erythroxilum deciduum), tarumã-de-espinho (Cytharexylum montevidense Sprenger) e capororoca (Rapanea ferruginea (Ruiz & Pavon) Mez), nativas da Floresta Estacional Decidual/Floresta Ombrófila Mista de Santa Maria - RS. Foi feita a análise de tronco e a medição de anéis anuais de cada espécie estudada. Com esses dados foi avaliada a tendência de crescimento em volume comercial, o incremento do volume comercial em porcentagem e o fator de forma comercial em função do diâmetro à altura de 1,3 m (DAP). Para o ajuste dos dados obtidos, foram testados cinco modelos diferentes. Revelou-se que, com todas espécies, um polinômio de segundo grau mostrou o melhor ajuste no caso do volume comercial e do fator de forma comercial. O incremento em volume comercial anual percentual foi melhor ajustado por um modelo exponencial, também para cada espécie analisada. Observou-se uma acumulação significativamente diferente do volume sobre o diâmetro das espécies. O tarumã e o cocão mostram uma acumulação rápida em volume, enquanto que a caúna e a capororoca crescem menos rapidamente. Isso é correlacionado com os fatores de forma, nos troncos mais cilíndricos, no caso do tarumã e do cocão. O incremento em volume comercial anual percentual varia entre a faixa de mais de 100% no início do processo de crescimento e abaixo de 10% no final do crescimento estudado.

ABSTRACT The tree species caúna-da-serra (Ilex brevicuspis Reissek.), cocão (Erythroxilum deciduum), tarumã-de-espinho (Cytharexylum montevidense Sprenger) e capororoca (Rapanea ferruginea (Ruiz & Pavon) Mez), native in the deciduous seasonal forest / dense tropical forest of Santa Maria were studied using a retrospective analysis. A stem analysis was performed of each species, measuring annual growth rings. Volume growth, commercial form factor and the annual percentual increment of commercial volume were analyzed according to growth at diameter at breast height. For modelling purposes 5 different equations were tested. It could be shown that a polynome of second degree was best adjusted to the growth of commercial volume and commercial form factor while annual percentual increment of commercial volume showed best fit with an exponential function. A significantly different accumulation of volume could be found concerning the different species which were studied. While tarumã and cocão show a rapid accumulation in growth, caúna and capororoca grow more slowly. This is correlated with more cylindric stems in the case of tarumã and cocão. The annual percentual increment of commercial volume moves between the range of more than 100% at the beginning of the growth process and below 10% at the end of the studied growth period.

Com base em um inventário, foram calculados três critérios econômicos (Taxa Interna de Retorno, Valor Presente Líquido e Relação Benefício Custo) para avaliar os resultados econômicos de plantações de acácia-negra, Pinus sp e de uma cobertura de grama para áreas degradadas na Mina de Recreio (COPELMI Mineração S.A.), em Butiá, RS. Como variante, economicamente ótima, foi encontrada a plantação com acácia-negra com uma idade de rotação de 5 anos.

On the base of an inventory three economical criteria (Internal Rate of Return, Net Present Value and Benefit Cost Ratio) were calculated to analyze the economic results of plantations of Acacia mearnsii and Pinus sp and a grass cover on degraded areas in Mina de Recreio (COPELMI Mineração S.A), in Butiá, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The plantation of Acacia mearnsii with a rotation age of 5 years was found as the economically optimal variant.

Este trabalho teve como objetivos estudar as tendências de crescimento em altura dominante de árvores localizadas dentro de uma mesma unidade de mapeamento de solo e estudar a viabilidade de se utilizar a posição do relevo como indicador de sítio para árvores de Pinus elliottii, localizadas em Piratini, na região denominada Serra do Sudeste, no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Foram coletadas 16 árvores dominantes em diferentes posições do relevo, sendo os dados de altura e idade ajustados através da função de RICHARDS (1959), com três coeficientes. A análise das tendências de crescimento feita através da utilização da análise de covariância e análise gráfica, indicaram que a posição do relevo não foi um bom indicador de sítio, pois houve cruzamentos entre as tendências de crescimento para árvores localizadas na mesma posição de relevo. No entanto, a análise das curvas de crescimento, construídas individualmente para os grupos formados por árvores de mesma tendência de crescimento, indicou que estes cruzamentos, por ocorrerem nas menores idades, não justificariam a construção de mais de um sistema de curvas de índice de sítio para este local e unidade de mapeamento de solo.

The objective of this work was to study the height growht of Pinus elliottii situated in the Piratini region (southeastern mountain range) in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It was collected 16 dominant trees in different relief positions. The height/age data were adjusted using the function of RICHARDS (1959) with three coefficients and the growth trends were studied by covariance and graphycal analysis. The results showed that relief was not a good site indicator, because there were intersections of height curves of trees which grew at the same relief position. However, the site index curves were established individually for each group, wihch was formed by tree with the same growth trend,the results showed that these intersections only occur at younger ages and thus do not justify the establishment of another system of site index curves in the region.

RESUMO No presente trabalho, foram elaboradas tabelas de produção de madeira e casca verde para Acacia mearnsii. Com dados originados de parcelas temporárias e permanentes instaladas em diferentes espaçamentos, distribuídas sobre toda a área de plantio desta espécie, foram ajustadas equações de regressão que apresentaram um coeficiente de determinação ajustado superior a 0,98 e um baixo erro padrão da estimativa em percentagem. Do estudo, resultaram cinco tabelas de produção por índice de sítio, estratificadas por espaçamento inicial que contêm o crescimento de altura dominante, diâmetro médio, altura média, área basal, volume com e sem-casca por hectare, peso de casca verde por hectare e incremento médio anual em volume com casca.

ABSTRACT In the present study table yields for the production of wood and green bark of Acacia mearnsii were established. The data were obtained from permanent and temporary sample plots with different spacings distributed over the whole planting area of this species. The regression equations adjusted to this data showed an adjusted coefficient of determination superior to 0,98 and a low mean standard error. The results of the study are five yield tables classified by site index and initial spacing containing growth of dominant height, mean diameter, mean height, basal area, volume with or without bark per hectare, weight of green bark per hectare and mean annual volume increment with bark.

RESUMO Um breve histórico mostra o desenvolvimento geral da silvicultura alemã e menciona o desenvolvimento acessório da silvicultura seminatural (seminatural silviculture, naturally-oriented silviculture). As motivações, para a silvicultura seminatural são discutidas com referência a seus aspectos ecológicos e econômicos. Os elementos da silvicultura seminatural do estado de BadenWürttemberg são apresentados. O conceito em si não é uma estratégia de preservação, mas visa também à produção de madeira. Alguns aspectos de florestas jardinadas, como o bem-conhecido “Plenterwald”, com sua longa tradição na Floresta Negra, são discutidos. Como ainda há muitos povoamentos puros no sudoeste da Alemanha, estratégias de conversão desses povoamentos em povoamentos mistos inequiâneos são mostrados, utilizando alguns exemplos. Critérios e indicadores de silvicultura seminatural, que são desenvolvidos por regiões ou sítios, podem ser utilizados para estabelecer um processo de certificação de madeira de florestas. A silvicultura seminatural é considerada como sistema adequado e racional para cumprir necessidades futuras das florestas num mundo que muda rapidamente.

ABSTRACT A brief historical overview shows the mainstream development pattern in German silviculture and outlines the adjacent role of seminatural (naturally-oriented) silviculture. The rationale for seminatural silviculture is discussed with reference to its ecological and economical aspects. Elements of seminatural silviculture of the Baden-Württemberg-concept are introduced. This concept is not purely a preservation strategy, but recognizes the importance of timber production. Some aspects of selection forest, which is a special case of uneven-aged forest with a long tradition in Southwest Germany, are discussed. As there are still a lot of even-aged (pure) forests in Southwest Germany, transformation strategies towards uneven-aged mixed forests are shown with the aid of some examples. Criteria and indicators for seminatural silviculture which have to be developed on a regional or local scale, can be used as a basis for establishing a certification process for Southwest German forests. Seminatural silviculture is suited as a rational and intergrating silvicultural system to fulfill future requirements on forests in a dynamically changing world.

No presente estudo, a relação altura-diâmetro de Acacia mearnsii foi analisada em três diferentes regiões do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, em povoamentos com idades de oito, nove e dez anos, plantados com espaçamentos de 3 x 1,33m. Entre os modelos de regressão utilizados, foi selecionado o modelo de PRODAN, que apresentou um coeficiente de determinação (R²) de 0,98 e um erro padrão da média (Sxy%) menor que 9%. Foi aplicada a análise de covariância para testar o paralelismo das curvas de altura-diâmetro dos diferentes povoamentos, nas respectivas regiões. As relações das curvas de altura-diâmetro mostraram mesma inclinação nos diferentes povoamentos para toda a região, permitindo o uso de uma curva única para reestimar o coeficiente de intercepto para cada novo ponto de observação na respectiva região.

In the present study the height-diameter relationship of Acacia mearnsii was analyzed for three different regions of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, using reforestations with age of eight, nine and ten years, planted with a spacing of 3 x 1.33m. Among the regression models applied was selected PRODAN’s model with a determination coefficient (R²) of 0.98 and a mean standard error (Sxy%) of less than 9%. Analisis of covariance was applied to test parallelism of height-diameter curves of the different stands in the respective regions. The height-diameter relationships showed equal inclination for the different stands of every region which allowed the use of a unique curve to re-estimate the coefficient of intercept for each new observational plot in the respective region.

RESUMO Foi estudado o efeito de diferentes programas de desbaste (desbaste leve, médio e pesado) em povoamentos de Pinus elliottii sobre a rentabilidade calculada por meio da taxa interna de retorno. Os povoamentos amostrados foram plantados no ano 1976 em espaçamento de 2 X 2 m. A determinação da intensidade de desbaste foi feita mediante o índice de densidade de Reinecke (SDI). O volume desbastado foi avaliado conforme os sortimentos de Pinus elliottii segundo a tabela de produção de SCHNEIDER & OESTEN (1991) e os custos/preços do ano 1998 fornecidos pela AGEFLOR, Porto Alegre. A maior taxa interna de retorno obteve-se em desbaste leve com 15 anos de rotação e uma densidade inicial de 2.500 árvores por hectare. A menor taxa interna de retorno também ocorreu com desbaste leve, mas em 45 anos e com uma densidade no plantio de 1.500 árvores. No geral, a taxa interna de retorno diminuiu com o aumento do período de rotação. Uma análise de sensibilidade mostrou que o preço obtido pela madeira é a variável mais sensível por influenciar a rentabilidade.

ABSTRACT The effect of different thinning programs (light thinning, medium and heavy thinning) on the internal rate of return was studied in stands of Pinus elliottii. The sampled stands were planted in 1976 with an inicial spacing of 2 x 2 m. Thinning intensity was expressed by the stand density index of Reinecke (SDI). Thinned volume was determined using the assortment tables of SCHNEIDER & OESTEN (1991) and costs/prices of the year 1998 of the Association of Forest Enterprises of Rio Grande do Sul (AGEFLOR). The highest internal rate of return was obtained with a light thinning with a rotation length of 15 years and an initial density of 2500 trees. The lowest internal rate of return resulted from a light thinning, but in 45 years and with an initial density of 1500 trees. In general, the internal rate of return diminished with increasing rotation length. A sensitivity analysis showed that timber price was the most sensitive variable to influence profitability.

RESUMO Foram estudadas as relações entre variáveis climáticas e o incremento em diâmetro do tronco de cinco árvores de Ocotea pulchella localizadas às margens de uma barragem no município de Itaára, RS. Os dados de crescimento, em diâmetro, foram obtidos mediante análise de tronco, utilizando-se seções transversais retiradas na altura de 1,3 m (DAP), sendo os incrementos radiais determinados por meio da média de quatro raios, diametralmente, opostos. As seqüências médias dos incrementos foram estandartizadas para salientar a variação a curto prazo. Os dados climáticos são oriundos da estação meteorológica do município de Santa Maria, RS. Foram calculadas grandezas climáticas compostas, como a evapotranspiração e o balanço hídrico, para melhor descrever as condições hídricas de crescimento das árvores. Foram determinados anéis de crescimento característicos e sensitividades das seqüências de crescimento. Possíveis mudanças no estado de competição das árvores e seu efeito no crescimento foram estudados. Além disso, foram relacionados o incremento radial e as variáveis climáticas selecionadas por intermédio de análise de correlação. Não foi possível identificar nenhuma variável climática que, coerentemente, tenha influenciado no incremento durante o período observado. Os resultados mostram que o excesso de água influencia no crescimento diamétrico das árvores.

ABSTRACT The relationship between climatic variables and stem diameter increment of five Ocotea pulchella trees was studied on a water-influenced site in Itaára, RS. Growth data was obtained by stem analysis. On the stem disks taken at breast height diameter (1.3 m), radial increment was measured on four perpendicular radii. The mean growth sequences were standardized to highlighten short-term variation. Climatic data is originated from the meteorological station of Santa Maria, RS. Compound climatic quantities like evapotranspiration and water balance were calculated for better describing hydric conditions of tree growth. Pointer years and sensitivities of growth sequencies were calculated. Possible liberation of trees and its effect on radial growth was studied. Variation of increment and climatic variation was compared by using correlation analysis. No climatic pattern could be found which coherently influenced diameter increment during the observation period. However, excess of water seems to influence the variation of diameter increment on the studied site.

RESUMO No presente trabalho, foram apresentados os métodos para avaliar os benefícios indiretos da floresta. Após exposições sobre a definição, as diferenças entre os conceitos e as características dos benefícios indiretos, foram descritos os problemas fundamentais da avaliação e as vantagens e desvantagens dos diferentes métodos. A última parte do estudo trata dos incentivos atuais e problemas a contexto, adotados na Alemanha, na produção florestal.

SUMMARY In the present work the methods for evaluating the social benefits of the forest are introduced. After discussions about the definition, the differences between the nations and the characteristics of the social benefits, the fundamental problems of evaluation and the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods are described. The last part deals with the present subsidies and context problems, adopted in Germany, in forest production.
