ABSTRACT Large amounts of nitrogen (N) fertilizers applied to maize cropping systems support high yields but cause adverse environmental impacts. The development of cultivars with higher N use efficiency is essential to maintain sustainable production. Thus, the present study aimed to select popcorn inbred lines efficient and responsive to N fertilization expressing high popping expansion. Fifty-one popcorn inbred lines from different origins were evaluated in the field under low and high N availability, arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The two main traits of economic interest in the crop were evaluated: grain yield (GY) and popping expansion (PE). A joint analysis of variance was performed and a scatter plot was generated to classify the inbred lines regarding the response to the N use, focusing on GY. For PE, a Scott-Knott grouping of means was conducted. Within the panel of evaluated popcorn inbred lines, it was possible to identify sources of favorable alleles for nitrogen use efficiency and popcorn expansion, highlighting the inbred lines L205, L206, L217, and L395. These genotypes emerge as potential parents to be included in mating blocks for the development of hybrids and/or breeding populations with high nitrogen use efficiency and popping expansion. RESUMO: A expressão potencial da produtividade das culturas constitui um desafio constante aos criadores de plantas frente às oscilações das variáveis ambientais, dificultando a seleção e onerando os custos operacionais e metodológicos na obtenção da cultivar ideal para determinada região. O objetivo do trabalho foi investigar os efeitos da interação genótipos x ambientes na seleção de linhagens de feijão-caupi com alta produtividade de grãos, adaptabilidade e estabilidade genotípica simultaneamente, em ambientes da região Noroeste do estado do Rio de Janeiro, usando modelos mistos (Máximo Verosimilhança Restrita - REML/Melhor Predição Linear não Viesado - BLUP). Avaliou-se 27 genótipos de feijão-caupi em seis ambientes pela combinação de local (Cambuci-RJ e Bom Jesus do Itabapoana-RJ) e ano (2016, 2017 e 2018). Foi utilizado o delineamento em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Os parâmetros genéticos foram estimados via procedimento REML/BLUP, e a seleção baseou-se no método da média harmônica do desempenho relativo dos valores genéticos (HMRPGV). Observou-se diferença significativa para ambiente e interação genótipo x ambiente. A variância residual e a variância da interação genótipo x ambiente formaram as maiores frações da variância fenotípica. As linhagens 4 (Bico-de-ouro 1-5-24), 6 (Pingo-de-ouro 1-5-4), 5 (Pingo-de-ouro 1-5-26) e 9 (Pingo-de-ouro 1-5-8) foram classificadas como superiores quanto a estabilidade e adaptabilidade e rendimento de grãos pelo critério da HMRPGV. As cultivares comerciais 13 (BRS-Tumucumaque) e 26 (BRS-Itaim) reuniram elevada produtividade de grãos, adaptabilidade e estabilidade específica nas condições edafoclimáticas avaliadas.

ABSTRACT: The potential expression of crop productivity is a constant challenge for plant breeders in the face of oscillations in environmental variables, making selection difficult and increasing the operational and methodological costs in obtaining the ideal cultivar for a determined region. The objective of the research was to investigate the effects of genotype x environment interaction in the selection of cowpea lines with high grain yield, adaptability, and genotypic stability simultaneously, in environments of the Northwest region of Rio de Janeiro State, using mixed models (Maximum Restricted Likelihood - REML/Best Linear Unbiased Prediction - BLUP). 27 cowpea genotypes were evaluated in six environments by combining location (Cambuci-RJ and Bom Jesus do Itabapoana-RJ) and year (2016, 2017 and 2018). A randomized block design with four replications was performed. The genetic parameters were estimated via the REML/BLUP procedure, and the selection was based on the harmonic mean method of the relative performance of the genetic values (HMRPGV). A meaningful difference was observed for environment and genotype x environment interaction. The residual variance and the variance of the genotype x environment interaction formed the most significant fractions of the phenotypic variance. Lines 4 (Bico-de-ouro 1-5-24), 6 (Pingo-de-Ouro 1-5-4), 5 (Pingo-de-Ouro 1-5-26), and 9 (Pingo-de-Ouro 1-5-8), stood out as superior in terms of stability and adaptability and grain yield by HMRPGV. Commercial cultivars 13 (BRS-Tumucumaque) and 26 (BRS-Itaim) had high grain yield, adaptability, and specific stability in the evaluated edaphoclimatic conditions.

Abstract The UENF WS01 is a hybrid that has an early cycle and high grain yield capacity under low water and nitrogen availability. It maintains popping expansion even under abiotic stress, thus being recommended for cultivation in the North and Northwest of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a eficiência da seleção simultânea quanto à produtividade, à estabilidade e à adaptabilidade, em genótipos de feijão dos grupos carioca e preto. Na safra 2016, dois experimentos foram realizados no Estado de Pernambuco: um do grupo carioca, com 20 genótipos, em Caruaru, Arcoverde e Belém de São Francisco; e outro do grupo preto, com 12 genótipos, em Caruaru e Arcoverde. Os parâmetros foram estimados por modelos mistos, e a seleção foi realizada pelo método da média harmônica do desempenho relativo dos valores genéticos, tendo-se adotado três estratégias: seleção com base no valor genético predito, sem interação; seleção com base no valor genético predito, tendo-se considerado cada local; e seleção simultânea quanto à produtividade, à estabilidade e à adaptabilidade de grãos. Os ambientes influenciaram a expressão fenotípica dos genótipos de feijão carioca, o que indica adaptação específica. A herdabilidade média quanto à produtividade de grãos apresentou valores de elevada magnitude para os genótipos de feijão preto, o que é condição favorável à seleção, e valores baixos para os de feijão carioca. Os genótipos de feijão preto CNFP 15684, 'BRS Esteio', CNFP 15678, CNFP 15697, CNFP 15695 e 'IPR Uirapuru' apresentam os melhores desempenhos nos ambientes testados, ao se considerarem simultaneamente o rendimento de produtividade de grãos, a adaptabilidade e a estabilidade.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine the efficiency of a simultaneous selection for yield, stability, and adaptability of bean genotypes of the carioca and black groups. In the 2016 harvest, two experiments were carried out in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil: one for the carioca group, with 20 genotypes, in the municipalities of Caruaru, Arcoverde, and Belém de São Francisco; and the other for the black group, with 12 genotypes, in the municipalities of Caruaru and Arcoverde. The parameters were estimated by mixed models, and selection was performed by the harmonic mean of the relative performance of genetic values, using three strategies: selection based on the predicted genetic value, without interaction; selection based on the predicted genetic value, considering each location; and simultaneous selection for grain yield, stability, and adaptability. The environments affected the phenotypic expression of the carioca bean genotypes, indicating specific adaptation. The average heritability for grain yield showed high values for black bean genotypes, which is a favorable condition for selection, and low values for carioca bean genotypes. The black bean genotypes CNFP 15684, 'BRS Esteio', CNFP 15678, CNFP 15697, CNFP 15695, and 'IPR Uirapuru' show the best performances in the studied environments, simultaneously considering grain yield, adaptability, and stability.

RESUMO: O uso de genótipos adaptados a diferentes regiões é uma das principais formas de aumentar a produtividade brasileira de feijão. O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar o desempenho genotípico de feijão carioca via modelos mistos. Foram avaliados 14 genótipos de feijão carioca em quatro locais do estado de Pernambuco (Arcoverde, Caruaru, Belém de São Francisco e São João) no ano de 2015. Os experimentos foram instalados em delineamento de blocos ao acaso com três repetições. Os parâmetros genéticos foram estimados pela metodologia REML/BLUP, e a seleção baseou-se no método da média harmônica da performance relativa dos valores genéticos (MHPRVG). A herdabilidade média dos genótipos apresentou magnitude moderada, aliada a alta acurácia seletiva, o que possibilita a seleção de indivíduos agronomicamente superiores. Os genótipos ‘BRS Notável’, CNFC 15480 e ‘IPR 139’ apresentaram boa adaptabilidade e estabilidade produtiva de grãos. Houve concordância entre as estatísticas μ ̂ + g ̂..., estabilidade de valores genéticos (MHVG), adaptabilidade de valores genéticos (PRVG) e estabilidade e adaptabilidade de valores genéticos (MHPRVG) na discriminação dos genótipos mais produtivos e com alta adaptabilidade e estabilidade, indicando que elas podem fazer parte de critérios seletivos na rotina dos programas de melhoramento do feijão.

ABSTRACT: Using genotypes adapted to different regions is one of the main ways to increase Brazilian bean yield. The aim of the present study was to assess the genotypic performance of Carioca beans through mixed models. Fourteen Carioca bean genotypes were assessed in four locations in Pernambuco State (Arcoverde, Caruaru, Belém de São Francisco and São João counties) in 2015. The experiments followed a completely randomized block design, with three repetitions. Genetic parameters were estimated according to the REML/BLUP methodology, whereas genotype selection was based on the harmonic mean of relative performance of genetic values method (MHPRVG). The mean genotype heritability had moderate magnitude, high selective accuracy, besides allowing selection of agronomically superior individuals. Genotypes ‘BRS Notável’, CNFC 15480 and ‘IPR 139’ showed good adaptability and grain yield stability. There was agreement among the statistics μ ̂ + g ̂…, stability (MHVG), adaptability (PRVG), and stability and adaptability of genetic values (MHPRVG) in the discrimination of the most productive genotypes, which presented high adaptability and stability. This outcome indicated that these genotypes can be part of the selection criteria regularly used in bean breeding programs.
