RESUMEN Como medida de control contra las malezas, el uso de herbicidas es una alternativa efectiva y asequible. Sin embargo, no hay productos recomendados para el cultivo de frijol caupí en Brasil, por lo que es necesario buscar soluciones alternativas. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de herbicidas aplicados en pre- y post-emergencia sobre la nodulación y productividad del frijol caupí bajo las condiciones de la sabana amazónica. Se realizaron dos experimentos en bloques al azar con cuatro repeticiones, utilizando el cultivar de frijol caupí BRS Aracê sometido a los herbicidas pre-emergentes: Metribuzina, Sulfentrazona, S-metolaclor, Pendimetalina, Oxadiazón, Alaclor, Metribuzina + Pendimetalina, Metribuzina + Alaclor y Quizalofop-p-etil, Bentazona, Fomesafen, Imazetapir, Imazamox + Bentazona, Quizalofop-p-etil + Imazetapir, Quizalofop-p-etil + Imazamox y Quizalofop-p-etil + Bentazona, y herbicidas post-emergentes: Quizalofop-p-etil, Bentazona, Fomesafen, Imazetapir, Imazamox + Bentazona, Quizalofop-p-etil + Imazetapir, Quizalofop-p-etil + Imazamox, Quizalofop-p-etil + Bentazona. Se evaluaron el número de nódulos por planta, la masa seca de nódulos, la masa seca de raíces y el rendimiento de grano. Según los resultados obtenidos en este estudio, el manejo de malezas en pre o post-emer-gencia de acuerdo con el herbicida utilizado afecta la nodulación y el rendimiento de grano de frijol caupí bajo condiciones de la sabana amazónica. Los herbicidas Metribuzina en pre-emergen-cia, y Fomesafen y la mezcla de Quizalofop-p-etil + Imazetapir en post-emergencia no se recomiendan para el control de malezas en frijol caupí. La aplicación de Oxadiazón, Alaclor y Pendimetalina en la pre-emergencia puede considerarse interesante porque no inhiben el desarrollo del sistema radicular o la nodulación de frijol caupí lo que proporciona un mayor rendimiento de grano. En lo relacionado con las estrategias de control de malezas posteriores a la emergencia, la aplicación del herbicida Imazetapir y la combinación de los herbicidas Quizalofop-p-etil + Imazamox, Quizalofop-p-etil + Bentazona e Imazamox + Bentazona permiten niveles satisfactorios de rendimiento de grano, desarrollo del sistema de raíces y nodulación de frijol caupí.

Abstract As a control measure against weeds, the use of herbicides is an effective and inexpensive alternative. However, there are no products recommended for the cultivation of cowpea in Brazil, making it necessary to search for alternative solutions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of herbicides applied in the pre- and post-emergence on cowpea nodulation and production under conditions of the Amazonian savannah. Two experiments were carried out in a randomized block design with four replicates, using the cowpea cultivar BRS Aracê subjected to the pre-emergence herbicides: Metribuzin, Sulfentrazone, S-metolachlor, Pendimethalin, Oxadiazon, Alachlor, Metribuzin + Pendimethalin, Metribuzin + Alachlor and Quizalofop-p-ethyl, Bentazon, Fomesafen, Imazethapyr, Imazamox + Bentazon, Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Imazethapyr, Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Ima-zamox and Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Bentazon, and post-emergence herbicides: Quizalofop-p-ethyl, Bentazon, Fomesafen, Imazetha-pyr, Imazamox + Bentazon, Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Imazethapyr, Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Imazamox, and Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Bentazon. The number of nodules in each plant, the dry matter of nodules, dry matter of roots and the grain yield were evaluated. According to the results obtained, the management of weeds in pre- or post-emergence according to the herbicide used affects the nodulation and productivity of cowpea under the conditions of the Amazonian savannah. The herbicides Metribuzin in pre-emergence, and Fomesafen and the mixture of Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Imazethapyr in post-emergence are not recommended for weed control in cowpea. The application of Oxadiazon, Alachlor, and Pendimethalin in pre-emergence can be considered interesting because they do not inhibit the development of the root system or the nodulation of cowpea which provides a greater grain yield. Regarding weed control strategies at post-emergence, the application of the herbicide Imazethapyr and the combination of the herbicides quizalofop-p-ethyl + imazamox, Quizalofop-p-ethyl + Bentazon and Imazamox + Bentazon allow satisfactory levels of grain yield, root system development and nodulation of cowpea.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of toxic levels of aluminum (Al) on the growth and external morphology of root tips in two maize genotypes with differential Al tolerance. The maize genotypes UFVM-100 (Al-sensitive) and UFVM-200 (Al-tolerant) were treated with 0 and 50 mM Al in a 0.5 mM CaCl2 solution at pH 4.5; root elongation, Al content and the external morphology of the root tips were evaluated. Chemical analysis, hematoxylin staining and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) showed greater Al accumulation in the root tips of the UFVM-200 genotype. The inhibition of root elongation in the UFVM-100 genotype, however, was much stronger than in the UFVM-200 genotype. Both maize genotypes exhibited visible and intense alterations in external micromorphology of the root tip, especially the Al-sensitive UFVM-100 genotype. Scanning electron micrographs showed intense cell disorganization and transverse ruptures of the protodermic and outer cortex layers of the cells in both genotypes. The ruptures were deeper and wider and reached the inner cortex layers in the UFVM-100 genotype. The EDS analysis showed that, in addition to Al accumulation, there was a proportional increase in the P concentration in the root tips of the UFVM-200 genotype. This is indicative of possible precipitation and/or immobilization of Al in the root tip apoplast of this genotype, which contributes to symplastic detoxification.

O objetivo neste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos de doses de nitrogênio associadas às doses do redutor de crescimento trinexapac-etil na cultura do trigo. O experimento, conduzido em Viçosa-MG, seguiu um esquema fatorial 5×4, no delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram 30, 60, 90, 120 e 150kg ha-1 de N, combinados com 0, 62,5, 125 e 187,5g ha-1 de trinexapac-etil. Trinexapac-etil promove redução da massa seca da parte aérea e do rendimento de grãos nas menores doses de N, mas sob doses elevadas de N o trinexapac-etil promove aumento dessas características. A combinação entre doses de N e trinexapac-etil que promove maior massa seca da parte aérea é de 150kg ha-1 e 187g ha-1, mas a que promove maior produção de grãos é de 100kg ha-1 e 120g ha-1, respectivamente.

The objective in this study was to evaluate the effects of nitrogen rates in association with rates of the growth retardant trinexapac-ethyl on wheat. The experiment was conducted in Viçosa, MG and arranged in a 5×4 factorial, randomized block design, with four repetitions. A combination of five nitrogen rates (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150kg ha-1) with four rates of trinexapac-ethyl (0, 62.5, 125 and 187.5g ha-1) were tested. Trinexapac-ethyl promotes reduction of soot dry mass and grain yield at the lowest N rates, but at the highest N rates there is increase in these characteristics. The combination between N and trinexapac-ethyl rates that promotes higher shoot dry mass is 150kg ha-1 and 187g ha-1 but that promotes higher grain yield is 100kg ha-1 and 120g ha-1, respectively.

Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de doses e formas de aplicação de nitrogênio sobre o desempenho e produção de duas cultivares de trigo. O experimento, conduzido em Viçosa-MG, de maio a setembro de 2005, foi instalado segundo um esquema fatorial 2x2x5 no delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos avaliados consistiram da combinação das cultivares de trigo, BRS 210 e Pioneiro, duas formas de aplicação de adubo nitrogenado (dose total aplicada por ocasião da semeadura ou 20 kg ha-1 na semeadura e o restante em cobertura no início da fase de perfilhamento) e cinco doses de nitrogênio (40, 60, 80, 100 e 120 kg ha-1) tendo como fonte o sulfato de amônio. A cultivar Pioneiro apresentou maior potencial produtivo que a cultivar BRS 210, mas foi menos resistente ao acamamento. O parcelamento da adubação nitrogenada proporcionou maior acamamento e não trouxe benefícios à produtividade dos grãos. As doses de N promoveram resposta quadrática da produtividade dos grãos, com ponto de máxima estimado na dose de 96,8 kg ha-1 e, aumento linear do acamamento de plantas da cultivar Pioneiro.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of doses and methods of nitrogen application on the development and yield of two wheat cultivars. The experiment was conducted in Viçosa-MG, from May to September 2005, and it was arranged in a 2x2x5 factorial, randomized block design with four repetitions. The treatments consisted of the combination of the two wheat cultivars, BRS 210 and Pioneiro, two nitrogen application methods (total dose applied at seed sowing or 20 kg ha-1 at sowing and the remaining as topdressing in the beginning of tillage) and five N doses (40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 kg ha-1) with ammonium sulfate as N source. Cultivar Pioneiro showed higher yield potential than cultivar BRS 210, but it was less resistance to lodging. Splitting nitrogen fertilization increased lodging and brought no benefit to grain yield. Grain yield response to N doses was quadratic, reaching maximum at 96.8 kg ha-1, and linear increase in lodging of cultivar Pioneiro plants.

O acamamento de plantas na cultura do trigo tem sido controlado com o uso de redutores de crescimento. No entanto, há carência de informações sobre o efeito desses produtos na qualidade fisiológica de sementes. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de trigo obtidas sob efeito de doses e épocas de aplicação de três redutores de crescimento. O experimento, conduzido em Viçosa, Minas Gerais, entre maio e setembro de 2005, foi instalado com tratamentos em esquema fatorial e hierárquico com uma testemunha, no delineamento em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram 500, 1000 e 1500g ha-1 de clormequat; 40, 80 e 120g ha-1 de paclobutrazol e 62,5, 125 e 187,5g ha-1 de trinexapac-etil aplicados no estádio 6 ou 8 da escala Feeks e Large, mais uma testemunha sem aplicação de redutor. A aplicação foliar dos redutores de crescimento clormequat, paclobutrazol e trinexapac-etil não afeta a germinação e o vigor das sementes de trigo.

Plant lodging in wheat has been controlled through growth retardants. However, there is lack of information on the effect of these products on the physiological quality of seeds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of wheat seeds obtained under different rates and application times of three growth retardants. The trial was carried out in Viçosa-MG, from May to September 2005, in a factorial and hierarchical scheme, in randomized block design with four replications and a control treatment. The treatments consisted of 500, 1000 and 1500g ha-1 of chlormequat; 40, 80 and 120g ha-1 of paclobutrazol and 62.5, 125 and 187.5g ha-1 of trinexapac-ethyl applied at the 6 or 8 growth stage based on the scale of Feeks and Large, and a control treatment without growth retardant application. Leaf application of growth retardants as chlormequat, paclobutrazol and trinexapac-ethyl did not affect the germination and vigor of wheat seeds.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o efeito de doses e épocas de aplicação de três reguladores de crescimento na elongação do colmo de plantas de trigo. O experimento, conduzido em Viçosa, Estado de Minas Gerais, de maio a setembro de 2005, foi instalado com tratamentos em esquema fatorial e hierárquico com uma testemunha, no delineamento em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram 500; 1.000 e 1.500 g ha-1 de clormequat; 62,5; 125,0 e 187,5 g ha-1 de trinexapac-etil e 40; 80 e 120 g ha-1 de paclobutrazol, aplicados no estádio 6 ou 8 da escala Feeks e Large, e uma testemunha. O comprimento do colmo com trinexapac-etil foi menor do que com o clormequat, que, por sua vez, foi menor do que com o paclobutrazol. A aplicação de reguladores na época 1 promoveu maior redução dos entrenós basais, enquanto a aplicação na época 2 proporcionou maior influência no pedúnculo. O aumento das doses de clormequat e trinexapac-etil promoveu redução do comprimento do colmo e das partes que o formam. O aumento das doses de paclobutrazol promoveu respostas pouco expressivas no colmo e seus componentes.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of doses and times of application of three growth regulators on wheat stem elongation. The experiments were conducted in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, from May to September 2005, in a factorial and hierarchical randomized block design with four repetitions and a control treatment. Treatments consisted of 500, 1000 and 1500 g ha-1 of chlormequat; 62.5, 125.0 and 187.5 g ha-1 of trinexapac-ethyl and 40, 80 and 120 g ha-1 of paclobutrazol, applied either at the 6 or 8 stage of the Feeks and Large scale, with a control. Stem length with trinexapac-ethyl was smaller than with chlormequat, which was in its turn smaller than with paclobutrazol. Application of growth regulators at stage 1 produced shorter basal internodes, whereas the stage 2 application caused greater reduction in the peduncle. The increase in chlormequat and trinexapac-ethyl doses reduced length of stem and its parts. The increase in paclobutrazol doses had very small effects on wheat growth and its parts.
