ABSTRACT Purpose To identify the prevalence of vestibular complaints in the psychiatric population of a mental health center in a city of the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. Methods The data were collected in the institution by a questionnaire, which contained a brief anamnesis and the “Dizziness Handicap Inventory - Brazilian Version”. Results The major part of the sample was composed by young adults (55.9%) and female (76.5%). The presence of dizziness at some period of day (always or sometimes) affects 67.7% of the subjects interviewed. Most of them use psychiatric pharmaceuticals (94.1%). Conclusion It was possible to conclude that there is a high prevalence of dizziness in the researched psychiatric population, the major impact being in subjects who use bipolar and mania pharmacal and subjects diagnosed with depressive disorder. As to association between vestibular complaints and psychiatric disorders, a significant association between dizziness and depressive disorders (p=0.033) and the absence of dizziness complaints and depressive episodes (p=0.031) was found. RESUMO Objetivo Identificar a prevalência das queixas vestibulares na população psiquiátrica de um centro de saúde mental de uma cidade da Região Metropolitana de Porto Alegre. Métodos Os dados foram coletados na instituição, por meio de um formulário composto por uma breve anamnese, e pelo Dizziness Handicap Inventory - Brazilian Version. Resultados A maior parte da amostra foi composta por adultos jovens (55,9%) e do gênero feminino (76,5%). Resumo Introdução O Timed Up and Go (TUG) é um teste bastante utilizado para avaliar o risco de quedas em idosos. Embora seja uma tarefa complexa, apenas o tempo total do TUG (TTUGT) tem sido utilizado para avaliação. A propagação dos smartphones proporcionou o surgimento de aplicativos para monitoramento de procedimentos diagnósticos. Objetivo Analisar a capacidade de predição de quedas futuras em idosos através das fases do TUG utilizando o teste sTUG Doctor. Métodos Estudo de coorte (1 ano) com 42 participantes utilizando o sTUG Doctor. O evento de queda durante um ano de seguimento foi monitorado por meio de contato telefônico. O número de dias entre a avaliação e a primeira queda ou último contato foi calculado para a análise de sobrevida avaliada por modelos não ajustados e ajustados através de modelos de regressão de risco de Cox. Testes com p < 5% foram considerados estatisticamente significantes e entre 5 e 10% indicati-vos de significância (Epi-InfoTM 7.2). Resultados As quedas foram observadas em 22 (52,38%) participantes (caidores). Os resultados indicaram que nível cognitivo, sintomas depressivos, mulheres e participantes com medo de cair (FES-I) são mais propensos a cair. Caidores tiveram pior desempenho em todas as fases do sTUG Doctor. As razões de chance para previsão de queda foram significativas para TTUGT (1,35; p = 0,029) e número total de passos (1,52; p = 0,057). O TTUGT permaneceu significativo ajustando-se ao sexo, faixa etária, FES-I e nível depressivo. Conclusão O sTUG Doctor foi uma ferramenta importante para prever quedas em idosos da comunidade.

Abstract Introduction The Timed Up and Go (TUG) is a test widely used to assess the risk of falls in older adults. Although it is a complex task, only the total TUG time has been used for evaluation. The widespread use of smartphones has provided the development of applications for monitoring diagnostic procedures. Objective To analyze the ability to predict future falls in older adults. Methods A cohort study (1 year) of 42 participants using the sTUG Doctor. Fall events during 1-year follow-up were monitored by telephone. The number of days between assessment and first fall or last contact was calculated for survival analysis, assessed by unadjusted and adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression models. Tests with p <5 % were considered statistically significant and between 5% and 10% were indicative of significance (Epi-Info™ 7.2). Results Falls were observed in 22 (52.38%) participants (fallers). The results indicated that cognitive impairment, depressive symptoms, women, and participants with fear of falling (FES-I) were more likely to fall. Fallers performed worse on all sTUG Doctor phases. Hazard ratios for predicting falls were significant for total TUG time (1.35; p = 0.029) and total number of steps (1.52; p = 0.057). Total TUG time remained significant when adjusted for sex, age group, FES-I, and depression level. Conclusion The sTUG Doctor was an important tool to predict falls in community-dwelling older adults.

Resumo Introdução: O ato de ouvir envolve uma complexa interação entre os sistemas auditivo periférico e central. O transtorno do processamento auditivo central pode ser descrito como qualquer alteração em uma ou mais habilidades auditivas. A literatura refere que questionários e checklists comportamentais podem ser aplicados para triagem de indivíduos em risco para o transtorno do processamento auditivo central. Objetivo: Identificar na literatura nacional e analisar questionários e checklists para triagem do processamento auditivo central disponíveis no Brasil para a língua portuguesa. Método: Pesquisa realizada em bases de dados eletrônicas e "literatura cinza". A estratégia de busca foi a seguinte: questionnaires OR surveys and questionnaires AND auditory OR hearing tests OR auditory perception AND Brazil. A pesquisa foi realizada de junho a agosto de 2017. A seleção dos estudos seguiu critérios de inclusão e exclusão. Os critérios adotados compreenderam estudos brasileiros, sem restrição de data e delineamento, que tenham sido elaborados, traduzidos, adaptados e/ou validados para o português brasileiro ou europeu, questionários e checklists como instrumentos para triagem do processamento auditivo central. Foram excluídos estudos internacionais não adaptados à língua portuguesa, bem como aqueles não disponíveis na íntegra. Resultados: Foram encontradas 3.664 publicações e sete trabalhos foram selecionados para esta revisão sistemática, conforme os critérios estabelecidos. Conclusões: Há escassa literatura nacional para triagem do processamento auditivo central e o único instrumento validado para o português brasileiro, publicado em formato de monografia, é o Auditory Processing Domains Questionnaire. Sugere-se que novos trabalhos com maior rigor metodológico nos processos de adaptação e validação dos instrumentos sejam desenvolvidos e publicados nas bases científicas usuais, com vistas à maior difusão e aplicabilidade clínica.

Abstract Introduction: The action of listening involves a complex interaction between the peripheral and central auditory systems. Central auditory processing disorder can be described as any problem in one or more auditory abilities. Literature reports that behavioral questionnaires and checklists can be applied to screen individuals at risk for central auditory processing disorder. Objective: To identify and analyze in the national literature questionnaires and checklists for the screening of central auditory processing available in Brazil for the Portuguese language. Methods: The research was carried out in electronic databases and "gray literature". The search strategy was: "questionnaires OR surveys and questionnaires AND auditory OR hearing tests OR auditory perception AND Brazil". The research was carried out between June and August of 2017. Study selection followed inclusion and exclusion criteria. The criteria adopted included Brazilian studies, without date and design restriction, that were carried out, translated, adapted and/or validated to Brazilian Portuguese or European Portuguese, as tools for central auditory processing screening. International studies that were not adapted to the Portuguese language were excluded, as well as the ones that were not available in full. Results: A total of 3664 publications were found and seven articles were selected for this systematic review, according to the established criteria. Conclusions: There is scarce national literature for central auditory processing screening and the only tool validated to Brazilian Portuguese, published as a monograph, is the auditory processing domains questionnaire. It is suggested that new studies with greater methodological stringency related to the processes of tool adaptation and validation be developed and published in the usual scientific databases, aiming at greater diffusion and clinical applicability.

Abstract Introduction Dizziness is a symptom that can lead to falls, which, in turn, undermine oné s independence and autonomy, leading to several comorbidities. The practice of physical exercise, however, can help prevent falls. Objective The objective of this study is to confirm the association between physical exercise, dizziness, probability of falling, and depressive symptoms in a group of middleaged adults and seniors. Methods The authors evaluated subjects based on history, the Geriatric Depression Scale, and functional reach test. Results The sample consisted of 90 individuals with a mean age of 69.3 6.8 years. The authors found that 37.8% had been practicing exercise, 33.7% had depressive symptoms, and their probability of falling was above average in the functional reach test. Conclusion The results of this study indicated an association between dizziness, exercise practice and depressive symptoms, indicating that physical activity is a beneficial factor for the aging population.

OBJETIVOS: verificar os achados da triagem imitanciométrica e dos testes da avaliação simplificada de processamento auditivo em escolares. MÉTODO: participaram da pesquisa alunos de 1ª a 4ª séries, de sete a dez anos de idade, de uma escola de ensino público de Porto Alegre. Foram avaliados 130 escolares na triagem imitanciométrica, que foi constituída por timpanometria e pesquisa do reflexo acústico ipsilateral e avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo, incluindo testes de localização sonora, memória sequencial para sons verbais e memória sequencial para sons não verbais. RESULTADOS: na triagem imitanciométrica 43,08% dos escolares passaram, tendo a curva tipo A como mais frequente. O reflexo acústico em 4000 Hz teve percentual de presença inferior comparado com os demais. Passaram nos testes da avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo 76,15% das crianças. Além disso, foi observado que o teste no qual os escolares obtiveram pior desempenho foi o de memória sequencial para sons verbais. Falharam na triagem imitanciométrica e na avaliação simplificada de processamento auditivo 12,3% dos escolares. CONCLUSÃO: a curva timpanométrica tipo A foi a mais frequente na população estudada. Na avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo a maioria dos sujeitos passou, tendo maior frequência de acertos no teste de localização sonora. Não houve associação estatística entre o resultado da triagem imitanciométrica e o resultado da avaliação simplificada de processamento auditivo.

PURPOSE: to check acoustic immittance screening findings and results of the simplified evaluation of auditory processing in school children. METHOD: the subjects under this study were students from the 1st to the 4th grade, with ages ranging from seven to ten year-old, from a public school in Porto Alegre. 130 students were evaluated in the immitance screening, which consisted of a tympanometry and an ipsilateral acoustic reflex, and a simplified evaluation of auditory processing. This has also involved the tests of sonorous localization, and verbal and non-verbal sequential memory. RESULTS: in the screening immittance, 43.08% of the students passed and the type A curve was the most frequent. The acoustic reflex at 4000 Hz had a lower percentage of appearance when compared with the others. In the tests for simplified evaluation of auditory processing, 76.15% of the children passed. Moreover, it was observed that the worst performance of the evaluated students was found in the verbal sequential memory test. CONCLUSION: the type A tympanometric curve was the most frequent in this population. In the simplified evaluation of auditory processing, most subjects passed, obtaining higher frequency of correct answers in the sonorous localization test. No statistical association between the results of the immittance screening and the simplified evaluation of auditory processing was found.

OBJETIVO: Analisar, em uma amostra de idosos de Porto Alegre, RS, os fatores intrínsecos e extrínsecos que predispõem ao risco de queda e fraturas. MÉTODOS: O estudo contou com uma amostra aleatória de 267 idosos, aos quais foram aplicados dois testes de equilíbrio: o Teste do Alcance Funcional (TAF) e o Timed Up and Go Test (TUG). Os idosos também responderam a um questionário (13 questões divididas em quatro categorias) sobre fatores sociodemográficos e sobre a saúde. RESULTADOS: Participaram idosos de ambos os sexos (76,8% mulheres) com idades entre 60 e 90 anos (média = 70,22 anos; DP = ± 7,30 anos). Foram encontradas relações estatisticamente significativas (p < 0,05) entre faixa etária, autopercepção de visão, tipo de moradia, última renda mensal e o TAF e entre faixa etária, autopercepção de saúde (p < 0,001) e o TUG. CONCLUSÃO: Foi identificado que, na amostra de idosos residentes em Porto Alegre/RS, os fatores intrínsecos que predispõem ao risco de quedas e fraturas são: faixa etária mais elevada; autopercepção ruim da visão e autopercepção ruim da saúde; já os fatores extrínsecos são o tipo de moradia (residir em casa) e a renda mensal igual ou inferior a um salário-mínimo.

OBJECTIVE: In a sample of elderly individuals from Porto Alegre - RS, Brazil, to analyze the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that predispose them to the risk of falls and fractures. METHODS: The study included a random sample of 267 elderly individuals, to whom two balance tests were applied: the Functional Reach Test (FRT) and the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG). The elderly also answered a questionnaire (13 questions divided into four categories) on sociodemographic and health factors. RESULTS: Elderly individuals from both genders (76.8% women), aged between 60 and 90 years (mean = 70.22 years, SD = ± 7.30 years) participated in the study. A statistically significant association (p < 0.05) was found between age, self-perception of eyesight, type of dwelling, last monthly income, and the FRT; the same was found between age range, self-rated health (p < 0.001) and the TUG. CONCLUSION: It was identified that, in the sample of elderly individuals living in Porto Alegre - RS, Brazil, the intrinsic factors that predispose to the risk of falls and fractures are older age, poor self-perception of eyesight, and poor selfrated health; the extrinsic factors are type of dwelling (living in a house) and a monthly income < one minimum wage.

Fatores cognitivos e emocionais podem afetar o equilíbrio, portanto, condições psiquiátricas são comuns em pacientes otoneurológicos. O tratamento dado ao sujeito vertiginoso pode ser mais influenciado pelo sofrimento e comportamento da doença do que pela gravidade da patologia orgânica. OBJETIVO: Este estudo teve como objetivo verificar a associação entre os resultados do exame vestibular e queixa psicológica autorrelatada, em indivíduos atendidos no ano de 2009, no serviço de audiologia de um hospital em Porto Alegre. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Foi realizado um estudo retrospectivo, descritivo-exploratório, consultando-se a base de dados dos softwares VecWin® e VecWin® 2 da marca Neurograff®. Foram investigados os resultados do exame vestibular, as queixas referentes aos sintomas psicológicos relatados espontaneamente e idade, sexo e queixa de vertigem e/ou tontura. O trabalho foi realizado em três etapas: agrupamento, exclusão/inclusão e quantificação. CONCLUSÃO: A faixa etária da amostra, o sexo e a presença ou ausência de vertigem e/ou tontura não foram variáveis de influência sobre o resultado do exame vestibular. Houve associação significativa entre a presença de queixa psicológica autorrelatada e o resultado normal do exame vestibular. Assim, é fundamental que os profissionais deem atenção às questões psicológicas relatadas pelo indivíduo na ocasião da anamnese vestibular.

Cognitive and emotional factors may affect balance; psychiatric conditions are a common component in patient dizziness. The treatment of patients with vertigo may be affected to a greater degree by the suffering due to this disease than by the severity of organic changes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate associations between vestibular test results and self-reported psychological complaints in patients evaluated during 2009 in an audiology unit at a hospital in Porto Alegre. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, descriptive-exploratory study of data taken from a database of the software VecWin® and VecWin® 2, developed by Neurograff®. We investigated vestibular test results, reports of psychological symptoms reported spontaneously, and information such as age, sex and the presence of vertigo and/or dizziness. This study consisted of three steps: clustering, exclusion/inclusion and quantification. CONCLUSION: Age and gender and the presence or absence of vertigo and/or dizziness were not variables that influenced the outcomes of vestibular testing. There was a significant association between the presence of self-reported psychological complaints and normal vestibular test results. Thus, it is crucial that professionals pay attention to psychological issues reported by patients when the vestibular history is taken.

INTRODUÇÃO: Os questionários de autoavaliação são úteis para quantificar as consequências emocionais e sociais/situacionais percebidas em função da perda de audição, podendo ser utilizados em diversas situações na rotina clínica, como a triagem auditiva. OBJETIVO: Verificar a sensibilidade e a especificidade dos questionários HHIA-S e HHIE-S na detecção de perda auditiva e suas aplicabilidades em triagens auditivas e analisar a capacidade desses questionários em detectar diferentes graus de comprometimento auditivo na população estudada. MÉTODO: Estudo retrospectivo, 51 indivíduos, entre 18 e 88 anos, responderam aos questionários Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults Screening Version - HHIA-S e Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly Screening Version - HHIE-S em sala de espera de um ambulatório de otorrinolaringologia do SUS. RESULTADOS: Os instrumentos revelaram baixa sensibilidade (47%), não identificando indivíduos com perda auditiva; porém, apresentaram alta especificidade (75%), identificando, corretamente, indivíduos que não apresentavam problemas de audição. Ainda, não existiu associação significativa entre o grau da perda auditiva e o grau de restrição de participação. CONCLUSÃO: Os referidos questionários apresentaram baixa sensibilidade e alta especificidade, não sendo eficazes para triagens auditivas em um grupo com queixas auditivas prévias, e também não foram capazes de detectar diferentes tipos e graus de comprometimento auditivo.

INTRODUCTION: The self-assessment questionnaires are useful to measure the emotional and social/transient consequences resulting from hearing loss, and they can be used in a wide range of situations in the clinical routine, such as auditory screening. OBJECTIVE: Check the sensitivity and specificities of HHIA-S and HHIE-S questionnaires to identify a hearing loss and their usages in auditory screenings, as well as analyze the ability of these questionnaires to detect different degrees of hearing impairments in the studied people. METHOD: Retrospective study with 51 individuals aged between 18 and 88, who filled out the Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults Screening Version - HHIA-S and Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly Screening Version - HHIE-S questionnaires at the waiting room of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS)'s otorhinolaryngology infirmary. RESULTS: The instruments showed a low sensitivity (47%), not identifying individuals with a hearing loss; however, they showed a high specificity (75%), accurately identifying individuals with no hearing disorder. Moreover, no significant association between the degree of hearing loss and the constraint degree for participation was found. CONCLUSION: the aforementioned questionnaires revealed a low sensitivity and a high specificity, proving to be ineffective for auditory screenings in a group with previous hearing complaints in addition to being unable to detect different types and degrees of hearing impairment.

INTRODUÇÃO: A perda auditiva provoca dificuldades na compreensão da fala, o que origina afastamento do meio familiar e social. Este isolamento pode estar associado a quadros depressivos. Tipo de estudo: clínico prospectivo. OBJETIVO: Verificar a associação entre perda auditiva e depressão em um grupo de idosos não institucionalizados. MÉTODO: A amostra foi composta por indivíduos com idade igual ou superior a 60 anos, submetidos à avaliação audiológica completa e rastreio de sintomatologia depressiva com a escala de depressão geriátrica (GDS). RESULTADOS: Foram avaliados 54 idosos, sendo 26 (48,1%) do sexo feminino e 28 (51,9%) do sexo masculino. Constatou-se que 39 (72,2%) apresentaram limiares auditivos alterados, sendo 17 (31,5%) com perda auditiva leve e 22 (40,7%) com perda auditiva moderada. Foram evidenciados sinais de depressão em 25 idosos (46,3%), sendo que 22 (40,7%) apresentavam perda auditiva. A análise dos dados evidenciou associação entre a presença de perda auditiva e depressão (p=0,016). Apesar de não significativa (p=0,18), a associação entre o grau de perda auditiva foi positiva em relação à gravidade dos sinais de depressão. CONCLUSÃO: Nos idosos pesquisados, ocorreu forte associação entre a perda auditiva e os sinais de depressão e tendência a existir associação entre o grau de perda auditiva e a gravidade dos sinais de depressão.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss causes difficulties in speech understanding, which leads away from the family and social environment. This isolation may be associated with depressive disorders. Type of study: clinical prospective. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between hearing loss and depression in a group of non-institutionalized elderly. METHOD: The sample consisted of individuals aged over 60 years, undergoing complete audiological evaluation and screening for depressive symptoms with the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). RESULTS: We evaluated 54 elderly, 26 (48.1%) were female and 28 (51.9%) males. It was found that 39 (72.2%) had hearing thresholds change, and 17 (31.5%) with mild hearing loss and 22 (40.7%) with moderate hearing loss. Were evident signs of depression in 25 elderly (46.3%), and 22 (40.7%) had hearing loss. Data analysis showed an association between hearing loss and depression (p = 0.016). Although not significant (p = 0.18), the association between the degree of hearing loss was positive in relation to the severity of the signs of depression. CONCLUSION: In elderly people surveyed, there was a strong association between hearing loss and signs of depression and tendency to be an association between the degree of hearing loss and the severity of the signs of depression.
