Neste trabalho, apresentamos a resenha do livro O fim das certezas – tempo, caos e as leis da natureza de Ilya Prigogine, publicado em 1996. Prigogine é ganhador do prêmio Nobel de química de 1977 por suas contribuições ao estudo dos sistemas fora do equilíbrio. Não é exagero dizer que esse livro aborda suas principais conclusões sobre esse tema ao longo de um vida dedicada ao assunto. Embora o autor seja muito claro e didático, o tema é extremamente complexo. Alguns capítulos exigirão maior concentração e talvez uma (ou duas) releitura. O esforço é mais do que compensador. O autor nos levará pelas questões mais polêmicas e ainda em aberto na física. Ele não se acanha em discordar dos maiores pensadores da história e faz isso com sobriedade e argumentos sólidos. Podemos resumir a questão central da obra em: passado e futuro são distintos? Já adiantamos que a ingenuidade dessa questão é apenas aparente. A tentativa de responder essa questão faz com que o autor proponha mudanças radicais na visão de mundo apresentada pela física desde Newton. Tais mudanças incluem uma extensão da mecânica clássica e uma formulação unificada da mecânica quântica. Com essa resenha, esperamos auxiliar a leitura dos interessados nessa obra rica, profunda, prazerosa e empolgante.

In this work, we present a book review of The end of certainties – time, chaos and the new laws of nature by Ilya Prigogine, published in 1996. For his contributions to the study of out-of-equilibrium systems, Prigogine was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1977. Without exaggeration, we can state that this book contains the main conclusions on the subject obtained throughout the author’s life. The author’s presentation of the subject is clear, yet the issue is quite complex. Some chapters will require extra attention and probably one (or two) re-readings. Regardless, the effort is worthwhile. The author leads us to the most controversial questions still open in physics. Prigogine is not afraid to disagree with history’s greatest minds and does so with sobriety and solid arguments. Is there a difference between the past and the future? This is the core question of the work and it is certainly not a naive question. The author argues fundamental changes in the world view offered by physics since Newton in an attempt to answer this question. An extension of classical mechanics and a unified definition of quantum mechanics are among the changes. We hope this review helps those interested in reading this rich, deep, pleasurable, and exciting work.

Neste trabalho apresentamos a resenha do livro O que é vida? de Erwin Schrödinger, escrito há quase 80 anos. Sua leitura nos permite uma experiência única de apreciar como um dos maiores físicos do século XX levantava suas questões e como buscava soluções das mesmas. A interdisciplinaridade é uma característica da obra. O leitor será apresentado a conteúdos de física, química, biologia, filosofia, religião, entre outros. Os temas abordados na obra foram, e continuam sendo, de grande importância para o desenvolvimento da ciência. Esse é mais um dos motivos para considerar sua leitura extremamente atual. Com esta resenha, esperamos auxiliar a leitura dessa obra atemporal.

In this work we present a review of What is life? by Erwin Schrödinger, written almost 80 years ago. Reading this book allows us a unique experience to appreciate as one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century raised his questions and how he searched for solutions to them. Interdisciplinarity is a characteristic of this book. The reader will be introduced to contents of physics, chemistry, biology, philosophy, religion, among others. The themes covered in the book were, and still being, of major significance for the development of science. This is one more reason to consider it reading extremely current. With this review, we hope to help reading of this timeless book.

Quase todos os problemas relevantes na física envolvem equações diferenciais. Dentre esses, uma classe especial e muito importante de problemas envolvem equações diferenciais parciais de segunda ordem. Um bom exemplo é a equação de Laplace que é fundamental em eletrostática, dinâmica de fluidos e termodinâmica, por exemplo. Em geral, a solução da equação de Laplace não é tarefa fácil e muitos são os métodos desenvolvidos para resolvê-la. Separação de variáveis e método das imagens são bons exemplos desses métodos. Nesse trabalho, apresentaremos as transformações conformes como uma ferramenta muito útil na solução da equação de Laplace. Esse método é pouco utilizado por não ser apresentado aos estudantes em um curso regular de exatas, tal omissão é ainda mais acentuada nos cursos de licenciatura. Nosso objetivo é ajudar a sanar essa lacuna apresentando um texto didático, introdutório e de fácil compreensão ao público interessado.

Most of the relevant physics problems involve differential equations. A special class of problems is those that involve second-order partial differential equations. The Laplace equation, for example, is fundamental in electrostatics, fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics. In many cases, obtaining the solution to the Laplace equation is difficult with the frequently used methods, namely: separation of variables and the method of images. In this work, we will present the conformal transformations as an additional tool that, in certain cases, is much simpler to use. As this tool is often overlooked in regular exact courses, our goal is to help fill this gap by presenting a didactic, introductory, and an easily understood text to the interested public.

Resumo Os tiros de comemoração referem-se aos tiros dados para o alto por ocasião de celebrações festivas. Este é um hábito em países como o Afeganistão, Paquistão e algumas regiões da América Latina. Neste artigo, resolvemos o problema de projéteis com velocidade subsônica atirados para alto, considerando a resistência do ar. Com fins didáticos, traçamos um paralelo entre esse caso e aquele em que a resistência do ar é desprezada. Concluímos que mesmo projéteis de pequeno calibre podem ser letais na queda, apesar da diminuição da velocidade e da energia cinética.

Abstract Celebratory gunfire is the shooting of a firearm into the air in celebration. This is common in countries as Afghanistan, Pakistan and regions of Latin American. In this article, we have solved the problem of a projectile with subsonic speed shooted upward, considering the air resistance. For didactic purposes, we draw a parallel between the case with and without air resistance. We conclude that even small-caliber projectile can be lethal when falling, a despite the decrease in speed and kinetics energy.
