Abstract A new species of Rhyacoglanis from the upper rio Tocantins basin is described based on morphological and molecular data. The new species differs from the congeners by its color pattern, caudal fin shape, hypural bones fusion pattern, pectoral-fin spine shape, and barcode sequence of cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI). In this study, two putative monophyletic groups of Rhyacoglanis are proposed based on morphology, one consisting of species with a short post-cleithral process and caudal fin with rounded lobes, Rhyacoglanis epiblepsis and R. rapppydanielae, and the other with a longer post-cleithral process and caudal fin with pointed lobes, R. annulatus, R. paranensis, R. pulcher, R. seminiger, and the new species described herein.

Resumo Uma nova espécie de Rhyacoglanis da bacia do alto rio Tocantins é descrita com base em dados morfológicos e moleculares. A nova espécie difere das congêneres por seu padrão de colorido, forma da nadadeira caudal, padrão de fusão dos ossos hipurais, forma do espinho da nadadeira peitoral e sequência de código de barras do citocromo oxidase subunidade I (COI). Neste estudo, dois possíveis grupos monofiléticos de Rhyacoglanis são propostos com base na morfologia, constituídos por espécies com o processo pós-cleithral curto e nadadeira caudal com lóbulos arredondados, Rhyacoglanis epiblepsis e R. rapppydanielae, e o outro com o processo pós-cleithral mais alongado e nadadeira caudal com lóbulos pontiagudos, R. annulatus, R. paranensis, R. pulcher, R. seminiger, e a nova espécie aqui descrita.

Abstract In this study, a new species of Rhyacoglanis is described from the Jamanxim River basin, Tapajós River basin. The new species differs from congeners based on the combination of the following diagnostic characters: two oblique dark bands formed by an agglomerate of melanophores on the predorsal region; dorsal confluence between the dark subdorsal and subadipose bands in large juveniles and adults; ventral confluence between the dark subadipose and caudal peduncle bands; body without conspicuous dark brown spots; complete dark band on caudal peduncle; body with three dark bands; a thin dark caudal-fin band; pectoral-fin spine with anterior serrae distributed along the entire margin; the posterior tip of the post-cleithral process reaching vertical through the base of the dorsal-fin spine; and hypural 5 free of hypural 3 and 4 and pointed caudal-fin lobes. Additionally, our molecular phylogenetic results using ultraconserved elements (UCEs) corroborate the new species as Rhyacoglanis and sister to an undescribed species of Rhyacoglanis from the Xingu River basin. Moreover, as pointed out in previous studies, we confirm Cruciglanis as a sister group to Pseudopimelodus plus Rhyacoglanis.

Resumo Neste estudo, uma nova espécie de Rhyacoglanis é descrita para a bacia do rio Jamanxim, bacia do rio Tapajós. A nova espécie difere de congêneres com base na combinação dos seguintes caracteres diagnósticos: duas faixas escuras oblíquas formadas por um aglomerado de melanóforos na região predorsal, confluência dorsal entre as faixas subdorsais escuras e subadiposas em adultos grandes, confluência ventral entre as faixas subadiposas escuras e do pedúnculo caudal em adultos grandes, corpo sem manchas escuras proeminentes de cor marrom, faixa escura completa no pedúnculo caudal, corpo com três faixas escuras e uma fina faixa escura na nadadeira caudal, espinho da nadadeira peitoral com serrilhas anteriores distribuídas ao longo de toda a margem, extremidade posterior do processo pós-cleitral atingindo verticalmente a base do espinho da nadadeira dorsal, hipural 5 livre dos hipurais 3 e 4 e lobos da nadadeira caudal pontiagudos. Adicionalmente, nossos resultados filogenéticos moleculares utilizando elementos ultraconservados (UCEs) corroboram a nova espécie como Rhyacoglanis é irmã de uma espécie não descrita de Rhyacoglanis da bacia do rio Xingu. Além disso, como apontado em estudos anteriores, confirmamos que Cruciglanis é um grupo irmão de Pseudopimelodus mais Rhyacoglanis.

Resumo Uma nova espécie de Rhyacoglanis é descrita das corredeiras de Jatobal, estado do Pará, Brasil. Essa espécie difere das congêneres pela fusão dos hipurais 3, 4 e 5 (vs. hipural 5 livre). Também difere das demais espécies, exceto de Rhyacoglanis epiblepsis, pelo padrão de colorido com inúmeras pintas escuras no corpo, processo pós-cleitral curto, nadadeiras peitoral e caudal arredondadas, e linha lateral incompleta. Essa espécie é conhecida apenas da localidade tipo, que atualmente se encontra inundada pelo reservatório de Tucuruí.

Abstract A new species of Rhyacoglanis is described from the rapids of Jatobal, Pará State, Brazil. This species differs from the congeners by fusing hypurals 3, 4, and 5 (vs. hypural 5 free). It also differs from the other species, except for Rhyacoglanis epiblepsis, by the color pattern with numerous dark spots on the body, short post-cleithral process, rounded pectoral and caudal fins, and incomplete lateral line. This species is known only from the type locality, which is currently flooded by the Tucuruí reservoir.

Resumo Lophiosilurus é um gênero monotípico representado por L. alexandri, uma espécie endêmica da bacia do rio São Francisco, Brasil. Em análises filogenéticas anteriores, o gênero foi recuperado como grupo irmão de Cephalosilurus. No entanto, poucas espécies de Cephalosilurus ou poucos caracteres foram incluídos nesses estudos. Assim, este estudo tem como objetivo testar a hipótese de monofilia dos gêneros Lophiosilurus e Cephalosilurus, com uma análise filogenética mais abrangente, incluindo todas as espécies de Cephalosilurus e um número representativo de caracteres. As análises filogenéticas de 18 táxons terminais (15 do grupo interno e três grupos externos) foram realizadas com base em uma matriz combinada de 75 caracteres, incluindo 70 caracteres morfológicos discretos de osteologia e neuroanatomia, quatro caracteres contínuos e um de morfometria geométrica da cabeça. A monofilia da família Pseudopimelodidae foi altamente apoiada e Cephalosilurus foi sinonimizado como Lophiosilurus. A filogenia recuperada do gênero foi (L. albomarginatus (L. nigricaudus (L. apurensis (L. fowleri, L. alexandri))).

Abstract Lophiosilurus is a monotypic genus represented by L. alexandri, a species endemic to the São Francisco river basin, Brazil. In previous phylogenetic analyses, the genus has been recovered as the sister group of Cephalosilurus. However, few species of Cephalosilurus or few characters were included in those studies. Thus, the current study aims to test the monophyletic hypothesis of the genera Lophiosilurus and Cephalosilurus with a more comprehensive phylogenetic analysis, including all Cephalosilurus species and a representative number of characters. Phylogenetic analyses of 18 terminal taxa (15 ingroups and three outgroups) were conducted based on a combined 75 character matrix, including 70 discrete morphological characters concerning osteology and neuroanatomy, four continuous characters, and the geometric morphometry of the head. The monophyly of the family Pseudopimelodidae was highly supported, and Cephalosilurus is synonymized with Lophiosilurus. The recovered phylogeny of the genus was (L. albomarginatus (L. nigricaudus (L. apurensis (L. fowleri, L. alexandri)))).

Abstract The wide distribution of the Neotropical freshwater catfish Rhamdia offers an excellent opportunity to investigate the historical processes responsible for modeling South America’s hydrogeological structure. We used sequences from cis-Andean and Mesoamerican Rhamdia species to reconstruct and estimate divergence times among cis-Andean lineages, correlating the results with known geological events. Species delimitation methods based on distance (DNA barcoding and BIN) and coalescence (GMYC) approaches identified nine well-supported lineages from the cis-Andean region from sequences available in the BOLD dataset. The cis-Andean Rhamdia lineages diversification process began in Eocene and represented the split between cis-Andean and Mesoamerican clades. The cis-Andean clade contains two principal groups: Northwest clade (MOTUs from Amazon, Essequibo, Paraguay, and Itapecuru basins) and Southeast clade (Eastern Brazilian shield basins (Paraná, Uruguay, Iguaçu, and São Francisco) plus eastern coastal basins). The diversification of the cis-Andean Rhamdia lineages results from vicariance and geodispersion events, which played a key role in the current intricate distribution pattern of the Rhamdia lineages. The wide geographical distribution and large size of the specimens make it attractive to cultivate in different countries of the Neotropical region. The lineages delimitation minimizes identification mistakes, unintentional crossings by aquaculture, and reduces natural stocks contamination.

Resumo Catorze novos loci microsatélites são descritos e caracterizados em duas espécies de poraquês, Electrophorus varii e E. voltai de planícies alagadas e rios da floresta amazônica. Esses loci são polimórficos, altamente informativos e têm a capacidade de detectar níveis confiáveis de diversidade genética. Da mesma forma, o alto valor de exclusão de paternidade combinado com a baixa probabilidade de identidade genética demonstra que o novo conjunto de loci exibe adequação para estudos de paternidade em poraquês. Além disso, a amplificação cruzada de espécies de peixes elétricos implica que também pode ser útil no estudo da espécie intimamente relacionada E. electricus, e de outras espécies de peixes elétricos neotropicais (Gymnotiformes).

Abstract Fourteen novel microsatellite loci are described and characterized in two species of electric eels, Electrophorus variiand E. voltaifrom floodplains and rivers of the Amazon rainforest. These loci are polymorphic, highly informative, and have the capacity to detect reliable levels of genetic diversity. Likewise, the high combined probability of paternity exclusion value and low combined probability of genetic identity value obtained demonstrate that the new set of loci displays suitability for paternity studies on electric eels. In addition, the cross-amplification of electric eel species implies that it may also be useful in the study of the closely related E. electricus, and to other Neotropical electric fishes (Gymnotiformes) species as tested herein.

Resumo: Este é o levantamento mais abrangente de peixes do rio Laranjinha, um afluente do rio das Cinzas, bacia do rio Paranapanema. Ao longo de sua rota, existe apenas uma pequena barragem com um sistema de transposição localizado 98 km de sua nascente. A amostragem foi realizada em nove locais, desde a nascente até a foz, com seis incursões de campo em cada local, com o auxílio de diferentes artes de pesca. Foram coletados 11.924 indivíduos, distribuídos em sete ordens, 27 famílias e 100 espécies. A ordem mais representativa foi Siluriformes, seguida por Characiformes. Quanto às famílias, Loricariidae compôs 21% e Characidae 14% da riqueza de espécies. Phalloceros harpagos foi a espécie com maior abundância absoluta, representando 11,3% do total, seguida por Hypostomus ancistroides, com 9,8%. No entanto, considerando a abundância média e a frequência de ocorrência, Hypostomus ancistroides foi a espécie mais abundante, seguida por Hypostomus cf. paulinus, Psalidodon aff. paranae e Phalloceros harpagos. Entre as espécies coletadas, Apteronotus acidops, Brycon orbygnianus, Brycon nattereri, Crenicichla jupiaensis e Rhinelepis aspera estão listadas em categorias de ameaça na Lista Vermelha da IUCN mais recente. Além disso, do total de indivíduos amostrados, 9,8% são considerados espécies não nativas. Entre as espécies nativas registradas, 10 espécies são migratórias de grande porte, o que indica que o rio Laranjinha é uma rota de desova e manutenção da diversidade de espécies no médio rio Paranapanema. Portanto, o rio Laranjinha é um patrimônio da diversidade de peixes e merece atenção especial em sua preservação.

Abstract: This work is the most comprehensive survey of the Laranjinha River´s fishes, a tributary of the Cinzas River, Paranapanema River basin. Throughout its course, there is only a low-height dam, including a transposition system located 98 km from its mouth. The sampling was carried out in nine locations, from the source to the mouth, with six field incursions in each location, using different fishing gear. A total of 11,924 fish were collected, distributed in seven orders, 27 families, and 100 species. The most representative order in the number of species was Siluriformes, followed by Characiformes. As for the families, Loricariidae comprised 21% and Characidae 14% of species richness. Phalloceros harpagos was the species with the highest absolute abundance, representing 11.3% of the total, followed by Hypostomus ancistroides with 9.8%. However, considering the average abundance and frequency of occurrence, Hypostomus ancistroides was the most abundant species, followed by Hypostomus cf. paulinus, Psalidodon aff. paranae and Phalloceros harpagos. Among the collected species, the Apteronotus acidops, Brycon orbygnianus, Brycon nattereri, Crenicichla jupiaensis, and Rhinelepis aspera were classified as endangered on the most recent IUCN Red List. Also, from the total sampled fish, 9.8% are considered non-native species. Among the native species recorded, 10 species are large migratory species, which indicates that the Laranjinha River is a route for spawning and maintenance of species diversity in the middle Paranapanema River. Therefore, the Laranjinha River is a heritage of fish diversity and deserves special attention in its preservation.

Abstract: Environmental heterogeneity is a factor which can help explain the higher local species richness. The objective of this study was to test if richness and composition of anurans species are related to available microhabitats and landscape type of sampled sites. We assume that a higher number of microhabitats increase environmental heterogeneity and this, in turn, affects species richness of amphibians. We performed the study in the Mesophytic Semideciduous Forest, a vegetation type within Atlantic Forest Domain. Between October 2010 and February 2011, we sampled 23 water bodies located in the agricultural, forest, and urban landscapes. The species richness was determined using survey at breeding sites methodology, and the availability of microhabitats was estimated visually. Thirty-four anuran species belonging to 12 families were recorded. The species richness in water bodies ranged from two to 13 species. The highest species richness was recorded in environments with a higher number of microhabitats, while the species composition in water bodies was partially grouped according to the predominant landscape type that is agricultural, forest, forest edge or urban. Our results suggest that species use specific environments (e.g. landscapes, habitat and microhabitat) for their reproductive activities.

Abstract The brain gross morphology of Rhamdia quelen is described and compared with seven species of six genera of Heptapteridae. Interspecific variation in shape, size, and position of brain subdivisions was observed in all examined species. The posterior position of the hypophysis on the hypothalamus and presence of a lateral subdivision on the lobus facialis are shared by all examined heptapterids. Rhamdia quelen and Pimelodella gracilis, currently considered closely related within the family Heptapteridae, exhibit the anterior and posterior area of the telencephalon with equivalent widths, and the lateral line lobe reaching the anterior area of the lobus vagi. Members of the so called Nemuroglanis sub-clade (Cetopsorhamdia iheringi, Heptapterus mustelinus, Imparfinis mirini, and Phenacorhamdia tenebrosa) share the lobus vagi proportional smaller than the lobus facialis; the lateral line lobe reaching the half length of the lobus facialis; the tectum mesencephali in contact with the telencephalon, and thinner anterior area of the telencephalon. The results reveal several features that are phylogenetically informative among the heptapterids examined, and corroborate previous hypotheses based on other non-neural anatomical characters.

RESUMO Bryconamericus é o gênero de Stevardiinae mais diverso, com 64 espécies válidas distribuídas nas bacias Cis- e Trans-Andinas, do Panamá na América Central à região norte da Argentina na América do Sul. Dessas espécies, três são conhecidas da bacia do alto rio Paraná: B. exodon, B. iheringii e B. turiuba. Neste trabalho descrevemos uma espécie nova de Bryconamericus da bacia do alto rio Paraná, habitando tributários das bacias dos rios Ivaí, Piquiri e Tibagi, Estado do Paraná, Brasil. A espécie nova difere dos seus congêneres pela presença de dentes desalinhados na fileira externa de dentes do pré-maxilar; uma única mancha umeral vertical, expandida e arredondada dorsalmente; 36-39 escamas perfuradas na série longitudinal; altura do corpo 31,6-37,9% CP; base da nadadeira anal 24,8-30,1% CP; 19-22 raios ramificados na nadadeira anal e ganchos ósseos nas nadadeiras pélvica e anal de machos sexualmente dimórficos. A espécie nova é sintópica com outros Stervadiinae na bacia do alto rio Paraná, como B. iheringii, B. turiuba, Piabarchus stramineus e Piabina argentea.

ABSTRACT Bryconamericus is the most diverse genus within Stevardiinae, comprising 61 valid species distributed in Cis- and Trans-Andean basins from Panama in Central America to northern Argentina in South America. Three species are known from the upper rio Paraná basin: B. exodon, B. iheringii, and B. turiuba. Herein we describe a new species of Bryconamericus from the upper rio Paraná basin inhabiting tributaries of Ivaí, Piquiri, and Tibagi basins, Paraná State, Brazil. The new species differs from its congeners by the presence of unaligned teeth in the outer tooth row of the premaxilla; a single, vertical, dorsally expanded and rounded humeral spot; 36-39 pored scales in the longitudinal series; body depth 31.6-37.9% SL; anal-fin base length 24.8-30.1% SL; number of branched anal-fin rays 19-22, and bony hooks on pelvic- and anal-fin rays of sexually dimorphic males. The new species is syntopic with other Stervadiinae in the upper rio Paraná basin such as B. iheringii, B. turiuba, Piabarchus stramineus, and Piabina argentea.

RESUMO O DNA barcoding é uma ferramenta molecular precisa para a identificação de espécies e resoluções taxonômicas. Até recentemente, Rhamdia voulezi e Rhamdia branneri eram consideradas sinônimas de Rhamdia quelen, contudo caracteres morfológicos e citogenéticos têm apontado à validade de ambas. Devido à escassez de informações sobre a taxonomia molecular de R. voulezi e R. branneri, o objetivo do presente estudo foi testar a validade das mesmas através do método de DNA barcoding tradicional e GMYC (General Mixed Yule Coalescent), por meio da análise do gene COI em 19 espécimes do rio Iguaçu. Em ambos os métodos, três MOTUs (Unidades Taxonômicas Operacionais Moleculares) foram identificadas com base no ótimo threshold (OT = 0,77). A média inter-MOTU (NJ, K2P) entre R. branneri e R. voulezi foi 1,4%, com valores de 0% intra-MOTUs em ambas espécies. As duas espécies identificadas como R. voulezi e R. branneri apresentaram correspondência com a identificação taxonômica e morfológica dos respectivos vouchers. No que se refere a R. quelen, os resultados intra-MOTU foram superiores ao OT (2,7%), evidenciando a possibilidade de existirem diferentes MOTUs denominadas como R. quelen. Sugerimos que estudos moleculares e taxonômicos sejam empregados em R. quelen, para evitar a contaminação de espécies selvagens por hibridizações.

ABSTRACT DNA barcoding is a widely utilized molecular-based identification of species and taxonomic resolutions. Until recently, Rhamdia voulezi and Rhamdia branneri were considered species synonyms of Rhamdia quelen; however, morphological and cytogenetic analyses have suggested the validity of distinct species. Due to the absence of molecular taxonomy of R. voulezi and R. branneri, the objective of this study was to test its validity through traditional DNA barcoding and the GMYC (General Mixed Yule Coalescent) COI-based analyses in 19 specimens from the Iguaçu River Basin. In both methodologies, three MOTUs (Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units) were identified based on the estimated optimum threshold (OT = 0.77). The average inter-MOTU distance (NJ, K2P) between R. branneri and R. voulezi was 1.4%, and 0% intra-MOTU distance in both species. The two species identified as R. branneri and R. voulezi showed correspondence with taxonomic and morphological identifications. With regard to R. quelen, the average intra-MOTU distance was greater than OT (2.7%), indicating that this species can be formed by different MOTUs. We suggest that molecular and taxonomic studies should be employed concurrently in R. quelen, to prevent contamination of wild species by hybridizations.

RESUMO Rhyacoglanis, um novo gênero de bagre da América do Sul da família Pseudopimelodidae é descrito da porção cisandina do continente. Rhyacoglanis é distinto de Pseudopimelodus e outros gêneros da família por três sinapomorfias: uma mancha clara na região lateral da cabeça, a faixa escura da nadadeira caudal confluente ao meio da mancha escura do pedúnculo caudal, e 30-35 vértebras totais. As espécies de Rhyacoglanis são reofílicas com uma forte preferência por corredeiras e outras águas rápidas. Uma análise filogenética com base em 41 caracteres morfológicos produziu uma hipótese de monofilia da família e de Rhyacoglanis. Pimelodus pulcher Boulenger, 1887 é designada a espécie-tipo do gênero novo e redescrita. Quatro espécies novas são descritas: Rhyacoglanis annulatus, da bacia do río Orinoco, com a banda escura do pedúnculo caudal aproximadamente circular, e uma maior distância entre o ânus e a origem da nadadeira anal; R. epiblepsis, da bacia do rio Madeira, com o corpo pintalgado e lobos da nadadeira caudal arredondados; R. paranensis, da bacia do alto rio Paraná, com três bandas escuras distintas no corpo, e 31-33 vértebras totais; e R. seminiger, da bacia do rio Juruena, com uma banda escura larga no tronco composta pelas bandas subdorsal e subadiposa fundidas anteroposteriormente, e uma banda escura separada no pedúnculo caudal.

ABSTRACT Rhyacoglanis, a new genus of the South American freshwater catfish family Pseudopimelodidae is described from cis-Andean portions of the continent. Rhyacoglanis is distinguished from other genera of the family by three synapomorphies: presence of a light blotch on the cheek; a connection between the middle of the dark caudal-fin stripe and the dark caudal-peduncle pigmentation; and 30-35 total vertebrae. Species of Rhyacoglanis are rheophilic and strongly associated with rapids and other swift-flowing waters. A phylogenetic analysis based on 41 morphological characters yields a hypothesis of monophyly of the Pseudopimelodidae and Rhyacoglanis. Pimelodus pulcher Boulenger, 1887, from the western Amazon basin is designated as type-species of the new genus and redescribed. Four new species are described: Rhyacoglanis annulatus, from the río Orinoco basin, with a nearly ringed dark band on the caudal peduncle, and a larger distance between anus and anal-fin origin; R. epiblepsis, from the rio Madeira basin, with numerous dark spots scattered on the body, and rounded caudal-fin lobes; R. paranensis, from the upper rio Paraná basin, with three distinct dark bands on the body, and 31-33 total vertebrae; and R. seminiger, from the rio Juruena basin, with subdorsal and subadipose dark bands fused anteroposteriorly, and a separate dark band on the caudal peduncle.

RESUMO Uma nova espécie de Microglanis da bacia do alto rio Paraguai é descrita. A espécie difere das congêneres pela seguinte combinação de caracteres: nadadeira caudal profundamente furcada com lobos pontiagudos, serra bifurcada entre as serras antrorsas e retrorsas da margem anterior do espinho da nadadeira peitoral, linha lateral relativamente longa, ultrapassando a vertical que passa pelo final da base da nadadeira dorsal, mas não atingindo a nadadeira adiposa, padrão de colorido da região dorsal castanho escuro com uma estreita área clara restrita entre a narina anterior e o olho, faixa clara larga na região supraoccipital.

ABSTRACT A new species of Microglanis from upper rio Paraguay basin is described. The species differs from congeners by the following combination of characters: deeply forked caudal fin with pointed lobes, bifurcated hook between antrorse and retrorse hooks on anterior margin of pectoral-fin spine, lateral line relatively long, surpassing the vertical through end of dorsal fin but not reaching adipose fin, color pattern of dorsal region of head dark brown with a restrict thin light area between anterior nostril and eye, broad light stripe on supraoccipital region.

RESUMO A espécie Rhamdia branneri Haseman, 1911 e sua subespécie Rhamdia branneri voulezi Haseman, 1911 são atualmente consideradas sinônimos de Rhamdia quelen (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824). Recentemente, estudos de cariótipos e de ecomorfologia distinguiram R. branneri e R. voulezi em espécies distintas. Exame de populações de Rhamdia do rio Iguaçu, incluindo espécimes-tipo, em conjunto com outras congêneres do rio Tibagi, permitiu reexaminar apropriadamente a situação destas espécies de Haseman e das referências dadas ao gênero Rhamdia para a bacia do rio Iguaçu. Rhamdia branneri e R. voulezi diferem de outras espécies de Rhamdia do rio Iguaçu por possuírem ambas as bordas do raio indiviso peitoral fortemente serrada com unidades rombudas, diferentemente da delicada serra do espinho peitoral de R. quelen ; combinam o perfil dorsal em suave curva regular, levemente convexo entre o supraoccipital e a nadadeira dorsal e o padrão de colorido marrom escuro ou cinza claro dorsal com abdome pálido, sem qualquer vestígio de colorido densamente pintalgado de negro, comum em outras espécies de Rhamdia da bacia do alto Paraná e ao material tipo de R. quelen . Adicionalmente, as seguintes características discriminam estas espécies: Rhamdia voulezi , nadadeira adiposa alongada; menor distância entre as nadadeiras dorsal e adiposa; menor comprimento entre a nadadeira adiposa e a base da nadadeira caudal e menor distância entre a margem posterior da órbita e a margem do opérculo. Rhamdia branneri , maior distância da nadadeira dorsal à adiposa; maior altura do pedúnculo caudal; maior altura do tronco na vertical que passa pela nadadeira adiposa e entre as nadadeiras ventral e anal; maior largura da cintura escapular; menor comprimento do barbilhão maxilar; menor comprimento do barbilhão mentoniano externo; menor distância interorbital; menor comprimento da base da nadadeira dorsal e menor comprimento da base da adiposa. Uma análise de componentes principais realizada entre as populações de Rhamdia do rio Iguaçu e uma população do rio Tibagi, bacia do alto rio Paraná, distinguiu a população do Tibagi com base na distância entre a nadadeira dorsal e a adiposa, comprimento do raio indiviso dorsal, comprimento do barbilhão maxilar, diâmetro orbital e comprimento do raio indiviso peitoral. O estudo morfométrico aliado às diferenças de cariótipo conhecidas sugerem R. branneri e R. voulezi como espécies válidas. A complexa situação de R. quelen , que possui ampla distribuição e com o neótipo recém designado para o rio Samiria, recomenda a realização de novos estudos com base em genética molecular e a manutenção dos nomes R. branneri e R. voulezi para o rio Iguaçu.

ABSTRACT The species Rhamdia branneri Haseman, 1911 and the subspecies Rhamdia branneri voulezi Haseman, 1911 from rio Iguaçu are currently recognized as synonyms of Rhamdia quelen (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824). However, recent karyotype and ecomorphology studies distinguish R. branneri and R. voulezi as different species. Examination of Rhamdia populations from rio Iguaçu, including type specimens, together with other congeners from rio Tibagi, allowed to properly reexamine the situation of these Haseman's taxa and references given to Rhamdia in the Iguaçu. The species R. branneri and R. voulezi have strong serrae with large basis on both margins of the pectoral-fin spine, uncommon in the remaining species of Rhamdia and different from the fine serrate margins of the pectoral spine of R. quelen ; a regular dorsal profile, slightly curved between supraoccipital and dorsal fin; with dorsal dark-brown or light-gray coloration along body, abdomen pale, without profuse small black spots, common in populations of the upper Paraná species and the type-material of R. quelen . Also the following morphometric characters discriminate these species: Rhamdia voulezi , adipose fin elongate; smaller distance between dorsal and adipose fin; smaller length between adipose fin to base of caudal fin and smaller distance from posterior margin of eye to opercular border. Rhamdia branneri , larger distance from dorsal and adipose fins; deeper caudal peduncle; higher trunk depth in the vertical distance through adipose, between pelvic and anal fins; larger scapular bridge; shorter maxillary barbel; shorter external mental barbel; shorter interorbital distance; shorter length of dorsal fin basis and shorter adipose-fin base length. A PCA between the populations of Rhamdia from Iguaçu and a population from rio Tibagi, upper Paraná basin, discriminates the population from Tibagi on basis of dorsal to adipose fin distance, dorsal-fin spine length, maxillary barbel length, eye diameter, and pectoral-fin spine length. This morphometric study allied to the karyotype known differences suggest R. branneri and R. voulezi as valid species. The complex state of R. quelen with the neotype recently designated from rio Samiria recommend new studies on basis of molecular genetics and provision of the names R. branneri and R. voulezi in the Iguaçu basin.

A morfologia externa do encéfalo de Pseudopimelodus bufonius é descrita e comparada com seus congêneres. As análises foram feitas no cérebro removido após a eliminação dos ossos do topo da cabeça e secção dos nervos cranianos e cordão espinhal. Nove caracteres morfométricos foram obtidos das principais subdivisões do encéfalo, dos quais em sete ocorreram diferenças significativas entre as espécies. Em todas as espécies examinadas do gênero o corpus cerebelli é a maior estrutura do encéfalo. O comportamento das espécies de Pseudopimelodus ainda é desconhecido, mas em outros teleósteos esta característica é normalmente correlacionada com uma boa coordenação motora. Além disso, as proporções relativas do tectum opticum, eminentia granularis, lobus facialis e lobus vagi podem ser relacionadas a hábitos carnívoros e boa capacidade de selecionar alimentos.

The gross morphology of the brain of the pseudopimelodid Pseudopimelodus bufonius is described and compared with congeners. Observations were made on removed brains after elimination of bones from the top of the skull and severing of the cranial nerves and the spinal cord. Nine morphometric characters associated with the major subdivisions of the brain were identified, seven of which revealed significant differences among the species examined. The corpus cerebelli in all examined species of the genus is the largest structure of the brain. The behavior of the species of Pseudopimelodus is still unknown, but in other teleosts that condition is typically correlated with a higher degree of motor coordination. Relative size proportions of the tectum opticum, eminentia granularis, lobus facialis and lobus vagi, might be related to carnivory and an enhanced capacity for food selection.
