Resumo O presente artigo analisa, a partir da história das religiões, as ideias e posturas de religiosos da Convenção Batista Brasileira entre a Revolução de 30 e o proscênio do Estado Novo. Propõe-se a compreender oscilações do pensamento liberal sustentado pela denominação batista no período entre 1930 e 1937. Aborda posturas de inflexão em face dos inimigos ideológicos dos batistas, sobretudo do comunismo e do integralismo. Apresenta narrativas de anticatolicismo, da defesa da laicidade durante a promulgação da Constituição de 1934 e o clima preparatório de apoio ao golpe do Estado Novo em 1937. No centro do corpus documental deste artigo está O Jornal Batista como órgão oficial da Convenção Batista Brasileira.

Abstract The presente article analyzes, from the history of religions, the ideas and attitudes of religious of the Brazilian Baptist Convention between the Revolution of 30 and the proscenium of the Estado Novo The purposen is to understand oscillations between the liberal thought supported by the Baptist denomination in the period between 1930 and 1937. It addresses inflectional stances in the light of the ideological enemies of the Baptists, especially of communism and integralism. It presents narratives of anti-Catholicism, the defense of secularism during the promulgation of the 1934 Constitution, and the preparatory climate of support for the coup of the Estado Novo in 1937. At the center of the documentary corpus of this article is O Jornal Batista as the official body of the Brazilian Baptist Convention.

Resumo Este artigo é produto da análise de uma polêmica entre os historiadores Giovanni Levi e Robert Darnton. Três questões, entre outras, foram tratadas: a primeira se refere à indicação de que Darnton teria feito a transposição mecânica da antropologia interpretativa para o campo da história cultural; a segunda diz respeito à problemática do relativismo em razão da interpretação sempre continuada por Darnton; a terceira segue as pistas de influências hermenêuticas em Geertz e em Darnton demonstradas por Levi. Por fim, tenciona-se avaliar as implicações teóricas dos textos escritos por Levi sobre O grande massacre de gatos de Darnton.

Abstract This article is the product of the analysis of a controversy between historians Giovanni Levi and Robert Darnton. Three issues were, among others: the first refers to the indication that Darnton would have done the mechanical transposition of the interpretative anthropology for the field of cultural history; the second relates to the problem of relativism in the grounds of interpretation always continued by Darnton; the third follows the hermeneutics influences in Geertz and Darnton demonstrated by Levi. Finally, will be evaluated the implications of theoretical texts written by Levi about the Great cat massacre written by Darnton.
