Abstract Callithrix kuhlii is present in forest mosaics, edge habitats, and abandoned fields in the Atlantic Forest. In Bahia and Minas Gerais. This study aimed to identify helminths from C. kuhlii and relate them to the clinical data, weights, and indices of the liver and gonads. Necropsies were performed on 13 adult marmosets that were run over on the BA-001 highway. A principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted to describe the relationships between the variables investigated. Fifty-one helminths were collected from 30.77% (4/13) of the marmosets analyzed. Helminths were classified based on their morphological and morphometric characteristics. Primasubulura jacchi (Marcel, 1857), Platynosomum illiciens (Dougherty, 1946), and Prosthenorchis confusus (Dougherty, 1946) were the species identified, with prevalence rates of 7.69%, 7.69%, and 15.38%, respectively. In addition, this is a new host record of P. confusus. The two main axes of the PCA explained a high variability (PCA=67.7%), indicating reduced weight and indices of the organs of parasitized animals. Resumo Callithrix kuhlli é encontrado em mosaicos florestais, habitats de borda e campos abandonados da Mata Atlântica. Na Bahia e Minas Gerais. Resumen Introducción: La reintroducción es un procedimiento utilizado para restablecer las poblaciones de animales silvestres. Objetivo: Evaluar el éxito de la reintroducción de Amazona aestiva e investigar si los factores abióticos (temperatura, humedad y luminosidad) interfieren en la búsqueda de la complementación alimenticia en los comederos instalados en el área de liberación. Métodos: Se iniciaron evaluaciones previas a la liberación con 59 Amazonas spp. Se realizaron pruebas de parasitología en heces, leucocitos, capacidad de vuelo y nivel de interacción animal-humano. En total, 33 animales fueron seleccionados y enviados al área de liberación, que es una región de ecotono entre los biomas de la Mata Atlántica y la Caatinga. Después de la liberación, se monitorearon durante un año las visitas a los comederos y la supervivencia en el área. En estos períodos también se registraron factores abióticos. Resultados: Las pruebas parasitológicas de huevos y parásitos en heces revelaron la presencia de Heterakis spp. y Eimeira spp. Los parámetros leucocitarios estuvieron dentro de los valores de referencia para la especie. Al menos el 50 % de los animales liberados sobrevivieron después de un año, con registros de eventos reproductivos. Los factores abióticos no interfirieron con las visitas de los animales al comedero. Sin embargo, la variable humedad explicó mejor las visitas por la mañana, mientras que las variables temperatura y luminosidad influyeron en la mayoría de las visitas por la tarde. Conclusión: La reintroducción está en el umbral de ser clasificada como exitosa. Los comederos y nidos artificiales instalados provocaron que los animales permanecieran en el área para ser monitoreados. Los factores abióticos pueden influir en la toma de decisiones de comportamiento diario relacionadas con el uso de alimentación complementaria en loros reintroducidos.

Abstract Introduction: Reintroduction is a procedure used to reestablish wild animal populations. Objective: To evaluate the success of reintroducing Amazona aestiva and investigate whether abiotic factors (temperature, humidity, and luminosity) interfere with the search for food supplementation in feeders installed in the release area. Methods: Pre-release evaluations were initiated with 59 Amazonas spp. Tests were run to stool parasitological tests, leukocytes, flight capacity, and level of animal-human interaction. In all, 33 animals were selected and sent to the release area, which is an ecotone between the Atlantic Forest and the Caatinga biomes. After release, visits to the feeders and survival in the area were monitored for a year. Abiotic factors were also recorded in these periods. Results: The stool parasitological tests revealed the presence of Heterakis spp. and Eimeira spp. The leukocyte parameters were within the reference values for the species. At least 50 % of the released animals survived after one year, with recordings of reproductive events. Abiotic factors did not interfere with the animal visits to the feeder. However, the variable humidity best explained visits in the morning, while the variables temperature and luminosity most influenced visits in the afternoon. Conclusion: The reintroduction observed and presented here is on the threshold of being classified as successful. The installed feeders and artificial nests caused the animals to stay in the area for monitoring. Abiotic factors may influence daily behavioral decision-making related to the use of supplementary feeding in reintroduced parrots.

Resumen: este estudio tiene el propósito de explicitar lo que la arqueóloga Niède Guidon representa para el Parque Nacional Serra da Capivara, desde la perspectiva de los guías de visitantes. Mediante entrevistas semiestructuradas, el estudio cualitativo focal contó con la participación de cincuenta guías de visitantes que actúan en el parque. Se concluye que cuarenta de ellos, es decir, el 80 % del total de guías de visitantes entrevistados, reconocen su importancia en la creación del parque y en el desarrollo de la región y su entorno como área protegida. Los relatos evidencian los impactos sociales, científicos y económicos del Parque Nacional Serra da Capivara en la población de la región, además de cuestionamientos educativos relativos al aprendizaje, la conciencia ambiental y la gestión de los residuos sólidos. De igual forma, los resultados del estudio demuestran el notable simbolismo que tiene la arqueóloga Niède Guidon y el importante legado que deja para el parque. En especial, destacan los cursos sistematizados, organizados desde 1993, de formación continua de guías de visitantes y la participación de la población del entorno en contrapartida por la implantación del área protegida. Asimismo, el análisis revela al Parque Nacional Serra da Capivara como modelo de gestión en el territorio brasileño que atiende a los objetivos del ecoturismo y del turismo arqueológico, y que adopta los principios del concepto de geoparque, en el que el autosostenimiento es el fundamento primordial desde su fundación. El modelo estructural, administrativo y organizacional de gestión del parque, reconocido nacional e internacionalmente, se mantiene hasta hoy debido al esfuerzo de la Dra. Niède Guidon. Esta es la primera investigación desarrollada sobre este tema, luego de los veintiséis años que han transcurrido desde la primera capacitación de guías de visitantes en el Parque Nacional Serra da Capivara.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to clarify what archaeologist Dr. Niède Guidon represents for the Serra da Capivara National Park based on the perspective of the park’s guides, fifty of whom participated in the highly specific qualitative focal study through semi-structured interviews. We found that 40 (80 %) of the guides interviewed recognize Dr Guidon’s importance in the implementation of Serra da Capivara National Park and in the development of the region surrounding the protected area. The accounts reveal the positive social, scientific, and economic impacts of the Serra da Capivara National Park on the region's population, as well as that of the implementation of educational programs focusing on environmental awareness and solid waste management, among others. Particularly noteworthy is the implementation in 1993, of systematized courses as part of a continuing education initiative for the park guides and the participation of the surrounding population in exchanges concerning the establishment of the protected area. The analysis also identifies the Serra da Capivara National Park as a Brazilian management model -maintained to this day as a result of Dr. Niède Guidon's efforts- that meets the ecotourism and archaeological tourism goals, and that adopts the principles of the geopark concept, in which self-sustainability has been the primary foundation. Twenty-six years after the first training of park guides in the Serra da Capivara National Park, this is the first study developed on this topic.

Resumo: o objetivo do estudo foi explicitar o que a arqueóloga Dra. Niède Guidon representa para o Parque Nacional Serra da Capivara sob a ótica dos condutores de visitantes. Por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas, participaram do estudo qualitativo focal centrado na especificidade 50 condutores de visitantes que atuam no parque. Concluiu-se que 40 (80 %) condutores de visitantes entrevistados reconhecem sua importância na implantação do parque e no desenvolvimento da região do entorno da área protegida. Os relatos evidenciam os impactos sociais, científicos e econômicos do Parque Nacional Serra da Capivara na população do entorno, além de questões educacionais relativas à aprendizagem, à consciência ambiental e ao manejo dos resíduos sólidos. As evidências revelam o notório simbolismo e o importante legado da arqueóloga Dra. Niède Guidon ao parque, destacando-se os cursos sistematizados, organizados desde 1993, de formação continuada de condutores de visitantes e a necessidade da participação da população do entorno como contrapartida à implantação da área protegida. Além disso, o estudo aponta o Parque Nacional Serra da Capivara como modelo de gestão no território brasileiro que atende aos objetivos do ecoturismo e do turismo arqueológico, bem como já adota princípios do conceito de geoparque no qual a autossustentação é o fundamento primordial desde o início de sua fundação. Esse modelo estrutural, administrativo e organizacional de gestão do parque, reconhecido nacional e internacionalmente, se mantém até hoje em razão do empenho da Dra. Niède. Esta é a primeira pesquisa desenvolvida com esse tema depois de decorridos 26 anos do primeiro curso de capacitação de condutores de visitantes ministrado no Parque Nacional Serra da Capivara.

The objective of this study was to identify the effects of climate change on the natural resources used by the tourist routes of Porto Seguro, Bahia - Brazil. The methodology of the Brazilian Tourism Inventory, the theory of the Quadruple Botton Line and the norms of the Davos Declaration, are used for collecting and interpreting data, resulting in the elaboration of a conceptual framework. This table identified 9 parameters: name; theme; itinerary; ecosystem; Frequency; number of visitors; legal instrument of protection; factors of climate change and risks, which were replicated in the districts of the municipality. The tables were completed in two stages, the first exploratory and the second through interviews with semi-structured routes carried out in travel agencies, tourism operators and association of municipal tourism guides. For this, natural and cultural routes were formatted and marketed at the destination. The most used ecosystem is terrestrial. Of the attractions that compose the itineraries, 98% do not have a study of carrying capacity and are concentrated in environmentally fragile areas. All areas have a federal, state and / or municipal protection instrument. Nature road maps are vulnerable to the factors of climate change (rising sea levels, rising temperatures and changes in the rainfall regime), impacting greatly on the reception of company revenues. The risks range from cultural to habitat loss and species in addition tourism entrepreneurs have not adopted sustainable practices to reduce identified risks.

El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar los efectos del cambio climático sobre los recursos naturales utilizados en los itinerarios turísticos de Porto Seguro (Bahia - Brasil). Para la recolección e interpretación de los datos se utilizó la metodología del Inventario del Turismo Brasileño, las bases teóricas del Cuádruple Botton Line y de la Declaración de Davos, resultando en la elaboración de un cuadro conceptual. El mismo identificó 9 parámetros: nombre, tema, itinerario, ecosistema, periodicidad, número de visitantes, instrumento jurídico de protección, factores del cambio climático y riesgos, los cuales fueron replicados en los distritos del municipio. Los cuadros fueron completados en dos etapas, la primera exploratoria y la segunda a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas realizadas en agencias de viaje, transportadoras de turismo y asociaciones de guías de turismo municipales. Para esto se obtuvieron itinerarios naturales y culturales creados y comercializados en el destino. El ecosistema terrestre es el más utilizado. De los atractivos que componen los itinerarios, el 98% no posee un estudio de capacidad de carga y están concentrados en áreas ambientalmente frágiles. Todas las áreas poseen un instrumento de protección federal, estadual y/o municipal. Los itinerarios de naturaleza están vulnerables a los factores del cambio climático (aumento del nivel del mar, aumento de la temperatura y cambio en el régimen de lluvias), impactando en los ingresos de las empresas. Los riesgos varían desde los culturales hasta la pérdida de hábitats y especies, pero los empresarios no adoptan prácticas sustentables para reducir los riesgos identificados.

Resumo: Animais silvestres, domésticos e seus subprodutos são ingredientes importantes na preparação de medicamentos tradicionalmente utilizados na medicina popular, presentes em várias culturas humanas desde a antiguidade. No entanto, a diminuição do número de espécies nas regiões neotropicais, por meio da caça para diversas finalidades, como uso alimentar, medicinal e mágico-religioso tem colocado espécies em risco de extinção, especialmente as endêmicas. Nesse contexto, o presente estudo objetivou identificar as espécies de vertebrados silvestres utilizadas na medicina popular em cinco comunidades na região do entorno do Parque Estadual Serra do Conduru (PESC), Bahia, Brasil. Foram entrevistados 45 caçadores-agricultores que citaram 23 espécies os quais são extraídas 17 matérias-primas para prevenção e/ou tratamento de 19 enfermidades. Os mamíferos foi o táxon com maior número de citações, seguido pelas aves e répteis. Dentre as espécies citadas a Cuniculus paca é a mais utilizada para fins zooterápicos, seguido por Salvator merianae e Sphiggurus insidiosus. As comunidades apresentaram uma dissimilaridade em relação a diversidade de espécies de uso zooterápicos. Foram classificadas 10 categorias dos sistemas corporais para os quais os recursos terapêuticos são recomendados. Transtornos relacionados ao ouvido médio e interno foram os mais citados. Algumas espécies citadas encontram-se ameaçadas de extinção, como a Bradypus torquatus e Lachesis muta. A pesquisa mostrou que a zooterapia é uma prática tradicional inserida nas comunidades. Estudos adicionais são necessários para ampliar o conhecimento sobre demais espécies que possivelmente desempenham importante valor cultural às famílias, bem como avaliar em um contexto ecológico às implicações que pode acarretar com o uso descontrolado dessas espécies na medicina tradicional, uma vez que a prática da zooterapia pode causar pressão sobre populações animais críticas e ameaçar a biodiversidade.

Abstract: Wild and domestic animals and their by-products are important ingredients in the preparation of medicines traditionally used in folk medicine, present in various human cultures since antiquity. However, the decline in the number of species in neotropical regions as a result of hunting for various purposes, including food, medicine and magico-religious use, has placed some species - especially endemic species - at risk of extinction. In this context, the present study aimed to identify the wild vertebrate species used in folk medicine in five communities in the region surrounding the Serra do Conduru State Park (PESC), Bahia, Brazil. Forty-five hunter-farmers were interviewed, citing 23 species, from which 17 raw materials are extracted for prevention and/or treatment of 19 illnesses. Mammals were the most cited taxon followed by birds and reptiles. Among the species mentioned, Cuniculus paca is the most used for zootherapy purposes, followed by Salvator merianae and Sphiggurus insidiosus. There was dissimilarity between the communities in relation to the diversity of species used for zootherapy. Ten categories of body systems were classified for which the therapeutic resources are recommended. Disorders related to the middle and inner ear were the most cited. Some of the species mentioned are endangered, such as Bradypus torquatus and Lachesis muta. This research demonstrated that zootherapy is a traditional practice embedded in these communities. Further studies are needed to broaden knowledge of other species that may have important cultural value for these families, as well as to evaluate the potential implications of the uncontrolled use of these species in traditional medicine in an ecological context, since the practice of zootherapy can excerpt pressure on critical animal populations and threaten biodiversity.

Resumo O artigo tem o objetivo de analisar a aplicabilidade do ordenamento jurídico pátrio no que se refere à legitimidade, tendo como foco a participação popular, para a criação e gestão da Reserva Extrativista de Canavieiras. A motivação deste estudo encontra-se alicerçada na política mundial para a conservação do bioma costeiro/marinho, que consiste principalmente na instituição de Áreas Marinhas Protegidas (AMPs). A Carta Magna de 1988 impôs, no art. 225, § 1°, III, a responsabilidade de criação dessas Áreas Protegidas ao poder público, com a finalidade da proteção da biodiversidade costeiro/marinha, desde que cumpra os critérios relacionados à legalidade e à legitimidade, por se estar em um Estado Democrático de Direito. Faz-se uma pesquisa no âmbito do Direito Ambiental e dos Direitos Humanos, com o objetivo de verificar inicialmente quais as exigências normativas e se estas foram cumpridas quanto à participação popular das populações diretamente atingidas na criação e na gestão da Unidade de Conservação referida. Portanto, os resultados obtidos demonstram que, apesar da descentralização das normas existentes, estas estabelecem os critérios que devem ser observados para o fortalecimento e desenvolvimento adequado da AMP, cumprindo os princípios da legalidade e da legitimidade, para que esta se torne uma política ambiental legal e legítima. Assim, faz-se um percurso de análise dos referidos princípios a partir da perspectiva da Reserva Extrativista de Canavieiras que, por ser mais recente, e apesar de ter atingido grandes interesses econômicos na área, cumpriu os requisitos no que tange à legalidade e à legitimidade, apesar de passar por vários questionamentos quanto à sua criação. O método utilizado inicialmente foi a pesquisa qualitativa, com coleta de informações de dados secundários, utilizando-se inicialmente da pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, visando traçar os requisitos legais necessários no que tange à participação popular para a criação e gestão de uma Unidade de Conservação Marinha. Já no que tange à verificação da participação popular quando da criação e gestão da AMP de Canavieiras, além da utilização do método de entrevista semiestruturada com a gestora da Unidade do período de 2015, com o fito de verificar o cumprimento dos requisitos referentes à participação popular, também foram analisados documentos institucionais, como atas do Conselho da Unidade.

Abstract The article aims to analyze the applicability of the Brazilian legal system, with regard to legitimacy, focusing on popular participation, for the creation and management of the Extractive Reserve of Canavieiras, a /marine Protected Area (MPA). The motivation for this study is based on the global policy for the coastal/marine biome conservation, which mainly consists on the establishment of Marine Protected Areas. The magna carta of 1988 imposed, in art. 225, § 1°, III, the responsibility of creating these Protected areas to the Government, with the purpose of coastal/marine biodiversity protection, as long as it complies the criteria related to legality and legitimacy, for being in a Democratic state of Law. a research on Environmental law and Human Rights was made, with the aim of checking initially which regulatory demands and if these were fulfilled, as the popular participation of the populations directly affected in the creation and management of the conservation unit. therefore, the results obtained shows that in spite of decentralisation of the existing rules, these set out the criteria that must be observed for the strengthening and adequate development of MPA, complying with the principles of legality and legitimacy, so it can become a legal and legitimate environmental policy. thus, a review was made of those principles from the perspective of Canavieiras Extractive Reserve for being the latest and despite having achieved major economic interests in the area, it has fulfilled the requirements regarding the legality and legitimacy, although it has been going through several questions about the regard of your creation. The first method applied was qualitative research, with collected information of secondary data, using initially of bibliographic and documentary research in order to draw the necessary legal requirements, with regard to popular participation, for the creation and management of a Marine conservation unit. For the verification of the popular participation when setting up and managing the MPA of canavieiras, in addition to the use of the method of semi-structured interview with the manager of the area for the period of 2015, with the purpose of verifying compliance with the requirements regarding popular participation, institutional documents such as minutes of the Council of Unit were also examined.

Resumo: O uso turístico de recifes de corais tem aumentado fortemente em todo o mundo, e com ele o fornecimento de alimento aos peixes por humanos. Porém, estudos indicam essa atividade como causa de distúrbios nos padrões de distribuição, abundância, estrutura da comunidade e comportamento de peixes marinhos. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar o efeito da presença humana e da alimentação artificial no comportamento dos peixes recifais, através de experimentos in situ realizados em piscinas de maré de uma Área Marinha Protegida no limite Norte do Banco dos Abrolhos, Atlântico Sul. Para isso foram realizadas 8 sessões (160 min) de filmagem remota do experimento de alimentação artificial. Cada sessão de filmagem registrou quatro tratamentos, os quais alternavam momentos de presença e ausência humana, e de alimentação dos peixes.Os resultados encontrados indicam que a alimentação artificial tem provocado alterações comportamentais nos peixes como a habituação à presença humana, condicionamento à oferta de alimento, aumento da agressividade, ataques a humanos e alterações na distribuição das espécies em curto prazo. A permanência da atividade de alimentação artificial, ao longo do tempo, pode provocar o aumento das populações que consomem o alimento oferecido e consequentemente, desencadear alterações na estrutura da comunidade.

Abstract: Coral reef-based tourism has risen sharply across the globe, coupled with an increase in fish feeding by visitors. Studies indicate that fish feeding is one of the leading causes of changes in distribution patterns, abundance, the structure of marine fish communities, and fish behavior. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of human presence and fish feeding on the behavior of reef fish by conducting in situ experiments in tide pools in a Marine Protected Area located at the northern limit of the Abrolhos Bank in the South Atlantic Ocean. Eight feeding sessions were conducted and filmed, resulting in a total of 160 minutes of video footage. Each filming session recorded four different experimental conditions alternating between human presence, human absence, and fish feeding. Our findings suggest that fish feeding may cause changes in fish behavior, such as habituation to human presence, conditioning to fish feeding, increased aggressiveness, attacks on humans, and short-term changes in species distribution. The continuation of fish feeding over time can cause an increase in the size of the populations of species that consume food provided during feeding and consequently trigger changes in the structure of communities.

ABSTRACT Boat engines increase the noise levels of the oceans, alter the acoustic environment of cetaceans and diminish their efficiency to echolocate. This study aims to determine if Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) are influenced by boat approaches. A land-based survey was conducted to record behavioral responses and count surfacing events of Guiana dolphins during 293 observation sessions from February to November 2014 in Pontal Bay, Ilhéus, Brazil. Ninety-eight behavioral responses to boat approaches of 93 dolphin groups were classified as negative (interruption or alteration of activity) or neutral (no response). The dolphins presented a neutral response to 90% of boats without engine approaches, 48% negative responses to inboard motorboat approaches, and 76% negative responses to outboard motor boat approach. Resting groups demonstrated 14 negatives and four neutral responses. Groups engaged in forage-feed activity presented ten negative and seven neutral responses while traveling groups exhibited 14 negative and 36 neutral responses. The average rate of surfacing events was significantly superior (P < 0.001) in the absence of boats (1.83 ± 0.90 surfacing events ind-1 min-1) than in their presence (1.34 ± 0.92 surfacing events/individual/minute). Guiana dolphins are exposed to an increasing number of anthropic perturbations and the evaluation of its behavioral responses to approaching boats is the first step to comprehend the real impact of boat encounters. Our results may contribute to the development of management strategies in estuarine areas to increase the conservation of the Guiana dolphins.

Brazil has the most extensive and richest areas of coral reefs in the South Atlantic Ocean, with its fauna characterized by high endemism and adaptations related to its growth and morphology, to its coral building fauna and to the depositional environment that differ from other coral reefs around the world. In spite of the effects from changes in the global environmental, the main stress factors for Brazilian reefs are local level threats, such as pollution and overfishing. The effects from these threats reduce biodiversity and result in decreasing stocks at different trophic levels. The trend that currently exists, regarding marine resource use, implies that reassessing the conservation strategies is urgently necessary if the degradation of these environments is to be reversed. It is necessary that the practices used in adjacent watersheds be improved, combined with actions to protect and recover native vegetation, along with planning for developing coastal areas, which will ensure that sedimentation rates be controlled and pollution sources are drastically reduced. Brazil should have to adopt a multidisciplinary approach to lead an evolution from traditional threat management in individual portions of ecosystems to large-scale management strategies in complex socio-economic and natural systems.

O método para identificação de Espécie-Chave Cultural (ECC) tem sido utilizado para definir espécies importantes culturalmente. Nesse sentido, para identificar e caracterizar ECC de vertebrados em comunidades do entorno da Área de Proteção Ambiental da Chapada do Araripe, e definir prioridades de conservação, utilizou-se formulário semiestruturado e listagem livre. Foram entrevistadas 246 pessoas; identificaram-se 53 espécies que foram incluídas nas categorias de uso: alimentar, medicinal, artesanal e simbólico. Identificou-se preferência alimentar para Mazama gouazoubira, Penelope superciliaris, Dasyprocta prymnolopha e Dasypus novencimctus. Como recurso medicinal Salvator merianae e M. gouazoubira representaram 51.85% das indicações de tratamento. No uso artesanal, destaca-se M. gouazoubira, que também foi a única espécie registrada para o uso simbólico. Os valores de uso (VU) encontrados variaram entre 0.03 e 1.34, sendo M. gouazoubira com o VU mais alto (1.34) e 0.74 de saliência. Em relação è importância cultural, M. gouazoubira foi a espécie que apresentou maior VU, saliência e indicada como ECC, para receber prioridades em ações e estudos para conservação.

The Cultural Keystone Species (CKS) method of identification has been used to define culturally important species. The objective of this study was to identify and characterize CKS vertebrates in the communities surrounding the Environmental Protection Area of Chapada do Araripe and define conservation priorities using semi-structured interviews and free listings. Interviews were conducted with 246 people; 53 species were identified and then included in categories of use: food, medicinal, handicraft and symbolic. Food preference was identified for Mazama gouazoubira, Penelope superciliaris, Dasyprocta prymnolopha and Dasypus novencimctus. As medicinal resources, Salvator merianae and M. gouazoubira represented 51.85% of treatment recommendations. For use in handicrafts, M. gouazoubira, which is also the only species recorded for symbolic use, stands out. Use values (UV) varied from 0.03 to 1.34, and M. gouazoubira had the highest UV (1.34) and a 0.74 projection. Regarding cultural importance, M. gouazoubira was the species with the highest UV and projection, and was indicated as a CKS to be prioritized in research and conservation studies.

This study provides an analysis of the occurrence and the spatial and temporal distribution of marine turtle strandings found in the south of the State of Bahia. Data was collected between January 2006 and June 2008. This study covers an area of 220 km of the southern coast of Bahia State (northeastern Brazil), and spatial analyses were made considering data collected in three bases suported by Petrobras-Petróleo Brasileiro S/A distributed in the area. The records were sorted according to month and year, species, age group and sex. A total of 260 stranding were reported: 183 of Chelonia mydas (74.1%), the most frequent species. The highest number of strandings was recorded in Gamboa do Morro Base. Juveniles presented the highest densities, but no differences between adults and small juveniles were detected. Males were more frequently stranded in Gamboa do Morro Base, while females were more frequent in Ilhéus Base. An increase in the number of stranding between 2006 and 2008 was noted; moreover, the months with more records were January, February, March, October and December. The number of stranding events was discontinuously distributed in the study area. This study also demonstrated the usefulness of implement different strategies of recording marine turtle strandings: direct monitoring efforts (patrol) in remote beaches and educational campaigns applied on beaches frequented by tourists. This study demonstrated that, despite spatial nearby, the three bases attend independent biological systems and show different stranding dynamics, thus different conservancy actions should be implemented in order to improve the knowledge on natural history of sea-turtles in the southern coast of Bahia State.

Se analiza de la incidencia y distribución espacio-temporal de los varamientos de tortugas marinas en el sur del Estado de Bahía, nordeste de Brasil. Los datos fueron obtenidos entre enero de 2006 y junio de 2008. Este estudio cubrió un área de 220 km de la costa sur del Estado de Bahía (noreste de Brasil) y el análisis espacial se realizó considerando las tres bases financiadas por la empresa Petrobras-Petróleo Brasileiro S/A. Los registros fueron ordenados según mes y año, especie, grupo etario y sexo. Se registró un total de 260 varamientos: 183 de Chelonia mydas (74,1%), la especie más frecuente. La mayor frecuencia de varamientos se observó en la base Gamboa do Morro. Los juveniles presentaron las mayores densidades, pero no se detectaron diferencias entre adultos y crías. Los machos vararon con mayor frecuencia en la base Gamboa do Morro, mientras que las hembras fueron más frecuentes en la base Ilhéus. Se observó un aumento en el número de varamientos entre 2006 y 2008 y además, los meses con más registros fueron enero, febrero, marzo, octubre y diciembre. El número de eventos de varamiento fue distribuido de forma discontinua en el área de estudio. Este estudio también demostró la utilidad de aplicar diferentes estrategias de registro de varamientos de tortugas marinas: esfuerzos de monitoreo directo (patrulla) en playas remotas y campañas educativas aplicadas en playas frecuentadas por turistas. Este estudio demostró que, a pesar de encontrarse próximas espacialmente, las tres bases atendieron sistemas biológicos que funcionan en forma independiente y muestran diferentes dinámicas de varamiento, por lo tanto se deben implementar diferentes acciones de conservación para mejorar el conocimiento de la historia natural de las tortugas marinas en la costa sur del Estado de Bahía.

Na região sul do Estado da Bahia (Brasil), a pesca marinha artesanal é praticada em todos os seus municípios costeiros, sendo responsável pelo sustentáculo econômico e cultural das famílias locais. Utilizando a pesquisa-ação como forma de investigação e considerando o conhecimento tradicional dos atores da região como peça indispensável no levantamento das informações, o presente trabalho objetivou identificar os principais conflitos socioambientais existentes em uma comunidade de pescadores artesanais localizada no sul da Bahia, Brasil. Através da pesquisa-ação, os autores puderam realizar ações de extensão as quais englobam realização de diagnósticos, ações de capacitações, estruturação produtiva, introdução de novas fontes de renda e busca de mercado para os produtos dos pescadores, e concomitantemente, realizar pesquisas socioeconômicas e ambientais no seio da comunidade. Dessa forma, foi possível verificar que o ambiente pesqueiro local é considerado, pelos pescadores locais e de outras regiões, como um dos principais pesqueiros da região sul da Bahia. Essa característica acaba sendo dicotômica, pois de um lado é interessante para os pescadores artesanais da comunidade, por outro, acaba atraindo pescadores de diversas regiões do país para captura do pescado, gerando situações conflituosas com os pescadores artesanais locais. A pesquisa-ação possibilitou verificar seis tipos de conflitos: i) conflito com pescadores amadores; (ii) pesca de arrasto na praia; (iii) uso da redinha para captura do marisco; (iv) captura do marisco no período da andada; (v) resistência para utilizar equipamentos de segurança; (vi) período de defeso do robalo. Com destaque maior para o primeiro conflito.

Artisanal marine fishing is practiced throughout all the coastal cities in the southern region of the State of Bahia (Brazil); it provides an economic and cultural base of support for local families. Using action-research as an investigatory method while treating traditional knowledge from the actors in the region as an indispensable information source, this study aimed to identify the main socio-environmental conflicts that exist in an artisanal fishing community located in the south of Bahia, Brazil. The research methods used in this article, starting with the action-research that allows the researcher to have access to the community with a view to jointly look for solutions to specific problems, following a cycle where there is systematic oscillation between actions in the field of practice and its investigation. In this way, it was possible for the authors to provide educational assistance which included performing diagnostics, training initiatives, productive structuring, introducing new income sources and searching for markets for the fishermen’s products, and at the same time, undertaking socioeconomic and environmental research at the heart of the community. Thus, the authors were able to verify that the local fishing environment is considered, by local fishermen and those from other regions, as one of the major fishing areas in southern Bahia. This characteristic means that the situation is dichotomous, because on the one side it is a matter of interest for artisanal fishermen in the local community, on the other hand, other fishermen from different regions of the country end up being attracted in order to catch fish, thereby generating conflict among local artisanal fishermen. The action-research method made it possible to verify six types of conflict: i) conflict with recreational amateur anglers; (ii) trawl fishing on the beach; (iii) using the net method for catching shellfish; (iv) picking up shellfish while they walk on the surface; (v) reluctance to using safety equipment; (vi) closed season for snook fishing. When focusing on the relationship with amateur fishermen it is possible to see, according to native fishermen, that these individuals can contribute to the local stock depletion due to the practices adopted by these fishermen; which therefore makes this conflict of primary importance among all the others that were analyzed. It was noticed that supervision and law enforcement by competent bodies is a rare thing in this analyzed fishing environment and thus, the fishermen seek partnerships through their association with various regional actors in order to find solutions to conflicts and to encourage community development.

Este estudo investiga os tipos de manejo e o perfil socioeconômico relacionado a estes, nas propriedades rurais do Refúgio de Vida Silvestre de Una. Tem-se como pressuposto de que as agroflorestas sucessionais são as mais favoráveis para conservação do bioma Mata Atlântica, inclusive na escala de paisagem. Portanto, objetiva-se conhecer os aspectos socioeconômicos associados à adoção de um tipo de manejo e sua inserção na paisagem. Para tanto, foram realizadas entrevistas em 73 propriedades, entre janeiro e maio de 2011. Os dados sobre os agrossistemas foram classificados em tipos de manejo: convencional, tradicional, orgânico e agroflorestal. Os resultados apontaram a predominância do tipo de manejo tradicional entre as propriedades. O perfil socioeconômico encontrado é compatível com as características do tipo de manejo predominante, o tradicional. Observaram-se no manejo tradicional: maior contribuição da mão de obra familiar e menor ocorrência de fonte de renda proveniente de trabalho rural para terceiros. A capacitação para atividade agrícola foi a única característica socioeconômica que apresentou maior importância para o manejo agroflorestal. Na paisagem, os resultados apontaram para a necessidade de adequação das práticas utilizadas nos agroecossistemas tradicionais aos objetivos da conservação do bioma, pois 39% das propriedades estão a uma distância de 350 m dos fragmentos, considerada máxima para que ocorra a conectividade estrutural, e possuem esse tipo de manejo.

This study investigates the types of management and socioeconomic profiles related to those, in the rural properties of the Una’s Wildlife Refuge. It has been assumed that the successional agroforestry are the most favorable for the conservation of the Atlantic Rainforest biome, including the landscape scale. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the socio-economic aspects associated with the adoption of a type of management and its integration into the landscape. Several interviews were performed in 73 properties between January and May 2011. Data on agricultural systems were classified into types of management: conventional, traditional, organic and agroforestry. The results indicate the predominance of the traditional type of management in the properties of Una’s Wildlife Refuge. The socioeconomic profile found is consistent with the characteristics of the predominant type of management, the traditional. In the traditional management, we observed a greater contribution of family labor and a fewer source of income from rural labor to others. Training for agriculture was the only socioeconomic variable that indicated greater importance for agroforestry. In the landscape, the results pointed the need for adaptation of the practices used in traditional agroecosystems to the biome’s conservation goals, because 39% of the properties are within the distance of 350 m from the nearest fragment (considered the maximum to occur structural connectivity) and have this type of management.

Interactions with boats can cause several behavioural changes in cetaceans. The purpose of this research is to analyse if Guiana dolphins, Sotalia guianensis, change their surfacing patterns in the presence of different boat categories, and their contact distances to boats at Port of Malhado, Ilheus, Bahia, Brazil. Data were collected from a fixed point from September 2008 to August 2009 and totalled 362.6 h of sampling effort and 213.22 h of effective effort. The number of dolphin breathing events was recorded during one minute periods, every time a boat passed nearby, and the same measurements were performed during periods of boat absence (control). Dolphin group composition was classified into groups with calves and groups without calves. Boat types were classified as inboard motor (IM), outboard motor (OM), ships (S) and without a motor (WM). Distances between the dolphins and passing boats were classified as near, intermediate and far. In total, 365 samples of one minute observations in absence of boats, and 379 observations in their presence were collected. Inboard motorboats had the highest occurrence in the study area (n = 478) and in interactions with Guiana dolphins (n = 260). However, outboard motorboats were mainly responsible for the reduction in surface patterns with an average of 1.82 and median of 2.2. In groups with calves, the number of breaths decreased significantly with an average of 2.13 per minute. There were no significant variations concerning the distances in the breathing pattern for any of the boat categories. The variation in the S. guianensis breathing pattern in the presence of boats may be a strategy of boat avoidance or a response to the difficulty of communication between animals.

Las interacciones con embarcaciones pueden causar cambios de comportamiento en los cetáceos. El propósito de esta investigación es analizar si los delfines costeros, Sotalia guianensis, modifican su patrón de afloramiento para respirar, en presencia de diferentes categorías de embarcaciones y de la distancia de contacto con las mismas en el puerto de Malhado, Ilhéus, Bahía, Brasil. Los datos se obtuvieron desde un punto fijo, de septiembre 2008 a agosto 2009, totalizando 362,6 h de esfuerzo de muestreo y 213,2 h de esfuerzo efectivo de observación. El número de salidas a la superficie fue contabilizado durante períodos de un minuto, cada vez que pasaba una embarcación, y también durante la ausencia de embarcaciones. La composición de los grupos de delfines se clasificaron como: grupos con crías y grupos sin crías. Los tipos de embarcaciones fueron clasificadas como: con motor central (CM), con motor fuera de borda (OM), barcos (S) y sin motor (WM). Las distancias entre los defines y las embarcaciones que pasaban se clasificaron como: cerca, intermedia y lejana. En total se efectuaron 365 observaciones de un minuto en ausencia de embarcaciones y 379 en su presencia. Los barcos de motor central fueron los más frecuentes (n = 478) en el área de estudio y en interacción con los delfines (n = 260). Sin embargo, las embarcaciones con motor fuera de borda eran las principales responsables de la disminución de los patrones superficiales con un promedio de 1,82 y una mediana de 2,2. En los grupos con crías, el número de subidas a la superficie se redujo significativamente con un promedio de 2,13 por minuto. No hubo variaciones significativas con respecto a las distancias en el patrón de subida a la superficie con ningún tipo de embarcación. La variación de este comportamiento de S. guianensis en presencia de embarcaciones puede ser una estrategia de evasión de embarcaciones o una respuesta a la dificultad de comunicación entre los animales.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo identificar e analisar as discussões ocorridas no âmbito do conselho deliberativo da Reserva Extrativista de Canavieiras, que influenciaram e/ou influenciam as decisões relativas às atividades de pesca, num processo de tomada de decisão participativa. A Reserva Extrativista de Canavieiras (Decreto s/n°, em 05/06/06) está localizada ao sul do Estado da Bahia, Brasil, e possui conselho deliberativo instituído que visa regular processos, mecanismos e organizações através dos quais os atores da sociedade exercem suas funções, reforçando o Princípio da Participação Popular, exigível principalmente quando se trata de Unidade de Conservação de Uso Sustentável. Nesse sentido, a identificação e análise das discussões do conselho deliberativo, prioritariamente, em relação às atividades de pesca, gestão ambiental e aos princípios da boa governança, possibilitaram compreender as relações de responsabilidade e responsabilização, aspectos vinculados a governança ambiental em áreas protegidas. Em relação aos procedimentos metodológicos, este estudo estruturou-se com base na pesquisa qualitativa, com coleta de informações de dados secundários a partir de documentos institucionais e legislações específicas. Foram analisadas dezenove atas, de 2009 a 2012. Verificou-se a identificação, discussão e sugestão aos problemas relativos à pesca, de forma direta ou indireta e até mesmo dos instrumentos de gestão, entretanto, em registros das atas, não ficou evidenciado o cumprimento ou a adoção de tais ações e medidas estabelecidas. Os principais temas discutidos no período, foram: conselho deliberativo, licenciamento ambiental, autorizações diretas, contrato de concessão do Direito Real de Uso e plano de manejo. Em relação aos princípios da boa governança, constatou-se a predominância dos princípios da Legitimidade e Voz e de Direção em relação aos princípios da Execução, da Responsabilidade e da Justiça.

This study had as its objective to identify and analyze the discussions that occurred under the deliberative council of Extractive reserve of Canavieiras which influenced and/or influence the decisions regarding the fishing activities, in a process of participatory decision making. The Extractive Reserve of Canavieiras (Decree s/no 06/05/06) is located in the south of the State of Bahia, Brazil, and has deliberative council established to regulate processes, mechanisms and organizations by means of which the actors of the society exercise their functions, by reinforcing the Principle of Popular Participation, due mainly when it comes to the Conservation Unit for Sustainable Use. In this sense, the identification and analysis of the discussion of the deliberative council, in order of priority, in relation to fishing activities and environmental management as well as the principles of good governance, enabled the understanding of the relationship of responsibility and accountability, aspects linked to environmental governance in protected areas. In relation to methodological procedures, this study is structured on the basis of qualitative research, with the gathering of information of secondary data from institutional documents and specific legislation. From 2009 to 2012, nineteen records were analyzed. It was checked the identification, discussion and suggestion to issues related to fisheries, either directly or indirectly, and including management tools, however, in records it was not evidenced the compliance or the adoption of such actions and established measures. The major topics discussed, at the time, were; deliberative council, environmental licensing, direct authorizations, concession of the Real Right to Use the Management Plan. In relation to the principles of good governance, it was observed the predominance of the principles of Legitimacy and Voice and of Direction in relation to the principles of Execution, of Responsibility and of Justice.
