ABSTRACT Amazonian soils have been suffering severe changes resulting from human activities in the region, causing significant changes in soil attributes that can contribute to greater susceptibility to erosion processes. Therefore, the present work aimed to estimate the erodibility in natural and anthropic environments in the southern region of the Amazon. Eight areas in the region were selected, including areas of native forest, savannah, cerradão, pasture and reforestation, delimiting 32 sampling points per area, with collections at a depth of 0.00-0.20 m, totaling 256 samples. Next, texture analysis and quantification of soil organic carbon were performed, and then erodibility was estimated by indirect prediction methods, Tukey’s test, Pearson’s correlation and factorial analysis of principal components. According to the results obtained, it was observed that the evaluated areas of native forest 1 and 2, cerradão and pasture present high susceptibility to erosion in relation to the cerrado, reforestation with genipap, teak and mixed areas. Therefore, it was noted that the high level of erodibility is associated with a greater predominance of sand fraction, K factor, Ki Kr and low clay content, as well as with the management employed in the areas.

Abstract Purpose This paper aims to analyze and examine how an organization from the financial sector prioritizes its business processes and what criteria are adopted to select the most appropriate process for improvement projects. Design/methodology/approach This descriptive research is based on an exploratory approach. Qualitative methodology was applied to a case study through on-site observation, documentation analysis and semi-structured interviews. Findings The results confirm criteria mentioned in the literature, such as financial aspects and strategic impacts, but also raised a new critical issue: automation potential of manual processes, reflecting the current movement of process automation. Research limitations/implications As a limitation of this study, it is worth mentioning the application in only one organization in the financial market and the small number of respondents, even though they occupy leadership positions in the organization. Practical implications As a practical implication, the present work offers a direction for managers of the financial sector in structuring and applying models for prioritizing processes aimed at organizational efficiency. Social implications Automation solutions for process improvement need careful study to minimize impacts in human resources reduction. In this sense, the eligibility of a process for automation must be carefully considered. Originality/value This paper presents the evolution of the process prioritization model adopted by a large institution in the financial market, which has a significant presence in the Brazilian and international markets as a commercial and wholesale bank.

Abstract Oil pollution has significantly contributed to coral reef decline in the last five decades and a major oil spill reached Brazilian tropical coast in August 2019. Here, we report the first evidence of direct crude oil contact from that spill on reef coral species, and evaluate the effects of this disaster on coral vitality and benthic assemblage structure on the largest coastal marine protected area (MPA Costa dos Corais) in Brazil. We compared benthic cover in reefs with and without oil and monitored Siderastrea stellata colonies 90 days after oil contact. Oil stains between 0.5 and 150 cm were found in two of the 17 reef sites investigated. Multivariate analyses did not detect significant differences between oiled and non-oiled reefs and there was no evidence of S. stellata health deterioration. These results indicate minimal acute effects on coral vitality and intertidal reef benthic assemblage structure. Future studies should investigate oil effects on specific aspects of coral biology as growth, reproduction, bleaching susceptibility and metagenomics which can deteriorate over longer time frames, and we recommend long-term coral reef monitoring to support a robust assessment and mitigation of chronic oil impacts.

RESUMO O déficit hídrico é o principal promotor de estresse abiótico ao qual as plantas estão suscetíveis, sejam as cultivadas ou aquelas subexploradas, como as fisális. A busca por ferramentas que contribuam para a gestão do déficit hídrico em plantas é fundamental para a manutenção da agricultura, sobretudo em zonas áridas e semiáridas ao redor do mundo. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do priming químico com prolina e nitroprussiato de sódio como promotores do aumento da tolerância ao déficit hídrico em plantas de Physalis peruviana. Assim, plantas cultivadas em condições bem hidratadas (FC de 70±5%) foram pulverizadas com prolina (10 e 20 mM) ou nitroprussiato de sódio (25 e 50 µM) e avaliadas após a exposição ao déficit hídrico (FC de 20±5%). Plantas cultivadas sob déficit hídrico sem pré-tratamento apresentaram reduções para as variáveis de relações hídricas, trocas gasosas e de crescimento. O uso de prolina e nitroprussiato de sódio foram eficazes na manutenção do potencial hídrico menos negativo, contribuindo para melhorias nas trocas gasosas, como assimilação de CO2, condutância estomática e transpiração. Dessa forma, foi possível mensurar maior tolerância ao déficit hídrico nas plantas pré-tratadas e, consequentemente, maior acúmulo de biomassa. O uso de prolina e nitroprussiato de sódio em pré-tratamento podem ter efeito priming contra o déficit hídrico em plantas de P. peruviana.

ABSTRACT Water deficit is the main cause of abiotic stress to which plants are susceptible, whether cultivated or those that are underexploited, such as Physalis peruviana L. Searching for tools that contribute to the management of water deficit in plants is fundamental for the maintenance of agriculture, especially in arid and semi-arid areas around the world. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of chemical priming with proline and sodium nitroprusside as promoters of increased tolerance to water deficit in P. peruviana plants. Plants grown under well hydrated conditions (FC of 70±5%) were sprayed with proline (10 and 20 mM) or sodium nitroprusside (25 and 50 μM) and evaluated after exposure to water deficit (FC of 20±5%). Plants cultivated under water deficit without pretreatment showed reductions in the variables of water relations, gas exchange and growth. Proline and sodium nitroprusside were effective in maintaining less negative water potential, contributing to improvements in gas exchange, such as CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance and transpiration. Thus, it was possible to measure greater tolerance to water deficit in pretreated plants and, consequently, greater biomass accumulation. It appeard that pretreatment of proline and sodium nitroprusside can have a priming effect against water deficit in P. peruviana plants.

ABSTRACT Concrete is the most used construction material and thus, being the cement a significant part of this material, it is also widely used around the world. Cement production is responsible for more than 5% of global CO2 emissions, which has been continuously increasing. A solution to reduce the cement content in concretes without loss of performance is thorough the particle packing optimization. This work uses practical numerical simulations through linear programming and the modified Andreasen & Andersen model to reduce the void content of aggregate mixtures and produce concretes with superior and intermediate packing levels. A broad range of distribution modulus “q” values were tested. Deviations between the particle size distribution (PSD) curves were calculated in each step of the process. In this study, mixtures with the smallest deviations – experimental PSD curves closer to the mathematical packing model – did not present the lowest void contents. The distribution modulus “q” directly affects the fine aggregate content in the mixtures: lower q values favors higher fine aggregate contents. For concrete granular skeletons composed by sand and gravel, there is a q value below which sand is the top deviation contributor and above which gravel is the top deviation contributor. Moreover, there is a limit to the distribution modulus after which the void content of aggregate skeletons tends to increase. In this study, that was 0.30. Concretes with superior packing (S concrete) and with the lowest distribution factor (q = 0.25) showed better performance in relation to the other studied concretes, with a higher compressive strength at 91 days and with a binder intensity around 6 at 28 days and below 5 at 91 days.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar o perfil clínico-epidemiológico de crianças e adolescentes hospitalizadas na clínica médica de um hospital pediátrico, referente aos períodos não pandêmico e pandêmico por COVID-19. Método Trata-se de estudo comparativo de natureza quantitativa, com delineamento transversal. A coleta de dados foi realizada em 219 prontuários do Serviço de Arquivo Médico e Estatística de um complexo pediátrico, no município de João Pessoa-PB. Quanto à análise dos dados, utilizou-se a estatística descritiva e testes estatísticos para comparar os grupos. Resultados O perfil das crianças e dos adolescentes hospitalizados teve predominância do sexo masculino, e de lactentes para o período não pandêmico e pandêmico, igualmente. A mãe foi a principal responsável e acompanhante da criança. As variáveis, natureza do benefício social, diagnóstico segundo especialidade médica e tempo de internação apresentaram diferenças estatísticas significativas entre os períodos não pandêmico e pandêmico por COVID-19. Conclusão Os dados encontrados apontam que não ocorreram mudanças expressivas no perfil sociodemográfico de crianças internadas. A pandemia por COVID-19 resultou em maior mudança no perfil clínico das internações. Implicações para a prática: Conhecer o perfil das crianças e adolescentes em processo de hospitalização, em um período pandêmico por COVID-19, auxiliará na elaboração de fluxos assistenciais e estratégias que atendam às reais demandas com propriedade.

ABSTRACT Objective Analyzing the epidemiological clinical profile of children and adolescents hospitalized in the medical clinic of a pediatric hospital in a non-pandemic and pandemic period by COVID-19. Method This is a comparative study of quantitative nature with cross-sectional design. Data collection was performed in 219 medical records of the Medical Archives and Statistics Service of a pediatric complex in the municipality of João Pessoa-PB. For data analysis, descriptive statistics and statistical tests were used to compare the groups. Results The profile of hospitalized children and adolescents was predominantly male and infant for the non-pandemic and pandemic period, equally. The mother was the main caregiver and companion of the child. The variables, nature of the social benefit, diagnosis according to medical specialty and length of stay showed a statistically significant difference between the non-pandemic and pandemic periods by COVID-19. Conclusion The data found indicate that there were no significant changes in the sociodemographic profile of hospitalized children. The pandemic due to COVID-19 resulted in greater change in the clinical profile of hospitalizations. Implications for the practice: Knowing the profile of children and adolescents in the hospitalization process in a pandemic period for COVID-19 can help in the development of care flows and strategies that can meet the real demands properly.

RESUMEN Objetivo Analizar el perfil clínico epidemiológico de niños y adolescentes hospitalizados en la clínica médica de un hospital pediátrico en un período no pandémico y pandémico por COVID-19. Método Se trata de un estudio comparativo de naturaleza cuantitativa, con delineamento transversal. La colecta de datos fue realizada a través de 219 historias clínicas del Servicio de Archivo Médico y Estadística de un complejo pediátrico en el municipio de João Pessoa-PB. Para análisis de los datos, se utilizó la estadística descriptiva y tests estadísticos para comparar los grupos. Resultados El perfil de los niños y de los adolescentes hospitalizados tuvo predominancia, de igual forma, del sexo masculino y de lactantes para el período no pandémico y pandémico. La madre fue la principal responsable y acompañante del niño. Las variables, naturaleza del beneficio social, diagnóstico según especialidad médica y tiempo de internación, presentaron diferencia estadística significativa entre el período no pandémico y pandémico por COVID-19. Conclusión Los datos encontrados apuntan que no ocurrieron cambios significativos en el perfil sociodemográfico de niños internados. La pandemia por COVID-19 resultó en un mayor cambio en el perfil clínico de las internaciones. Implicaciones para la práctica: conocer el perfil de los niños y adolescentes en proceso de hospitalización en un período pandémico por COVID-19 podrá ayudar en la elaboración de flujos asistenciales y estrategias que puedan atender las reales demandas con propiedad.

RESUMO Na indústria da construção civil, buscam-se atualmente medidas mitigadoras dos impactos causados ao meio ambiente. Uma alternativa que vem ganhando espaço nos últimos anos diz respeito à utilização das fibras vegetais, que dentre os seus diversos tipos pode-se destacar as provindas do sisal, que apresentam forte relevância socioeconômica ao semiárido nordestino. Tendo em vista essa importância, o presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar os efeitos nas propriedades físicas e mecânicas que o beneficiamento a partir de resíduos provindos da produção de fibras de sisal promove em argamassa. Trata-se de um estudo experimental e quantitativo, sendo a pesquisa dividida em três etapas: levantamento teórico e conceitual; caracterização dos resíduos da fibra de sisal, agregado e aglomerante; e experimentação destrutiva e não destrutiva do composto cimentício. No que concerne a consistência da argamassa com adição de fibra, pode-se perceber que o filamento acaba atuando como uma rede que retém as partículas de agregados de maior granulometria, segregando assim uma pasta formada basicamente por cimento e água. Com relação à resistência à compressão e módulo de elasticidade, os corpos de prova acrescido de resíduos de fibras apresentaram uma redução quando comparados com os isentos da mesma, tendo como provável causa uma falha na compactação em decorrência da presença da fibra. Em contrapartida observou-se um ganho de 60% na resistência à tração aos 28 dias quando adicionada a fibra, pois esta atua distribuindo as tensões ao longo da peça, retardando o processo de fissuração e consequentemente o rompimento da estrutura.

ABSTRACT In the civil construction industry, current alternatives are sought to mitigate the impacts caused to the environment. An alternative that is taking place in recent years concerns the use of vegetable fibers, which among the various types it is possible to highlight those from sisal, which have a strong socioeconomic relevance to the Northeastern semiarid. Given this importance, the present study aimed to analyze the effects on the physical and mechanical properties that the processing from wastes arising from the sisal fibers production promotes in mortar. It is an experimental and quantitative study, divided into three stages: theoretical and conceptual survey; characterization of sisal fiber, aggregate and binder; and destructive and non-destructive experimentation of the cementitious compound. About to the mortar consistency with addition of fiber, it can be seen that the filament ends up acting as a network that retains the particles of aggregates of greater granulometry, thus segregating a paste basically formed by cement and water. Regarding the compressive strength and elasticy modulus, the specimens plus fiber residues showed a reduction when compared to those exempt from it, with a probable cause of a failure in compaction due to the presence of the fiber. In counterpart, there was a 60% gain in tensile strength was observed at 28 days when the fiber was added, as it acts by distributing the stress throughout the part, delaying the cracking process and consequently breaking the structure.

RESUMO Os impactos negativos causados pela construção civil ao meio ambiente são motivados principalmente pela demanda de recursos naturais. A indústria do cimento se destaca por ser responsável por cerca de 5% das emissões mundiais de CO2. Estratégias vêm sendo utilizadas para reduzir essas emissões, como o aumento no desempenho do ligante a partir da redução do teor deste na produção de concreto, através de métodos de dosagem com o empacotamento de partículas. Nesse sentido, o objetivo do estudo consistiu em avaliar o comportamento do concreto com baixo teor de cimento, e adição de Cinza de Biomassa Vegetal (CBV), exposto a sulfato de sódio. Foi realizado um estudo experimental caracterizando os materiais envolvidos, uma avaliação das alterações dimensionais de corpos de provas de argamassa e análise da fissuração das peças, testes físicos e mecânicos em concreto, submetidos a dois processos de cura (solução de sulfato de sódio ou em cura convencional). O traço foi desenvolvido com o auxílio do software de empacotamento EMMA e planilha presente na literatura, onde reduziu-se o teor de cimento em 10, 15 e 20% em massa, substituindo por CBV. O material de referência apresentou significativa redução na expansão ao ser exposto à solução de sulfato quando comparado às amostras submetidas à cura convencional. Quanto às misturas acrescidas de CBV, essas apresentaram uma redução de resistência para cura convencional e melhor comportamento quando expostas ao meio agressivo de sulfato, tanto em resistência como em expansão para os traços de 10 e 15% de redução do cimento, sendo esta última considerada eficiente para meios agressivos.

ABSTRACT The negative impacts caused by civil construction to the environment are motivated mainly by the demand for natural resources. The cement industry stands out for being responsible for about 5% of global CO2 emissions. Strategies have been used to reduce these emissions, such as increasing the performance of the binder by reducing its content in the production of concrete, through dosing methods with the particle packing. In this sense, the objective of the study was to evaluate the behavior of low-cement concrete, and addition of Plant Biomass Ash (PBA), exposed to sodium sulfate. An experimental study was carried out characterizing the materials used, an evaluation of the dimensional changes of mortar specimens and analysis of the cracking of the pieces, physical and mechanical tests on concrete submitted to two curing processes (sodium sulfate solution or conventional curing). The mix was developed with the aid of the EMMA packaging software and spreadsheet available in the literature, in which the cement content was reduced by 10, 15 and 20% by weight, replacing with PBA. The reference material showed a significant reduction in expansion when exposed to sulfate solution compared to samples submitted to conventional curing. As for mixtures added with PBA, they showed a reduction in strength when exposed for conventional curing and better behavior when exposed to the aggressive sulfate medium, both in strength and in expansion for the mixes with 10 and 15% cement reduction, the latter being considered efficient for aggressive environments.

Resumen El género Inga Mill. pertenece al clado mimosoide (Fabaceae, Caesalpinioideae) con 131 especies en Brasil. Es el género más importante de las Fabáceas. En este sentido, el objetivo de este estudio fue realizar un análisis bibliométrico de Inga en el Estado de Santa Catarina. Se condujo un estudio de la literatura publicada utilizando las bases de datos electrónicas de la Web of Science, Scopus y SciELO con los nombres aceptados de las especies Inga y sus sinónimos. Los trabajos se distribuyeron en cuatro categorías temáticas: C1 (ecológico), C2 (morfología, anatomía, taxonomía, histología, fisiología y genética), C3 (producción y uso) y C4 (propiedades bioquímicas y nutricionales). Se registraron 232 trabajos para 13 especies de Inga, donde se exhibió un notable incremento de publicaciones. C1 fue la categoría temática más estudiada, principalmente en temas tales como: suministro de nutrientes, sombra y capacidad de fijación de nitrógeno. Inga edulis, I. vera e I. marginata fueron las especies más registradas en nuestro estudio. Nuestros resultados mostraron un aumento en el número de artículos sobre Inga con el tiempo, especialmente en los últimos 13 años. Sin embargo, es necesario abordar algunos vacíos importantes como el número relativamente pequeño y/o la falta de estudios realizados para algunas especies.

Abstract The genus Inga Mill. belongs to the mimosoid clade (Fabaceae, Caesalpinioideae) that includes 131 species in Brazil. It is the most important genus of Fabaceae. In this sense, this study aimed to perform a bibliometric analysis on Inga from Santa Catarina state. A survey of the published literature was conducted using the electronic databases of the Web of Science, Scopus and Scielo with the accepted names of Inga species and its synonyms. Papers were distributed in four subject categories: C1 (Ecological), C2 (morphology, anatomy, taxonomy, histology, physiology and genetics), C3 (production and use) and C4 (biochemical and nutritional properties). We registered 232 papers for 13 species of Inga. C1 was the most studied subject category, mainly in topics such as nutrient supply, shade and nitrogen fixing capacity. We also noticed that the subjects diversified over the years, with registered papers in all categories. Inga edulis, I. vera and I. marginata were the most registered species in our survey. Our results showed an increase in the number of articles on Inga over time, especially in the last 13 years. However, some important gaps need to be addressed, such as the relatively small number and/or lack of studies conducted for some species.

This study examines the relationship between climate and species richness and distribution of palms (Arecaceae) in the Brazilian State of Santa Catarina. We use data from the Floristic and Forest Inventory of Santa Catarina and WorldClim - Global Climate Data. We hypothesized that low temperature and precipitation limit palm species richness and distribution in Santa Catarina. For modeling palm species richness, we used a generalized linear model for zero inflated data and to assess reasons behind differences in palm species abundance and species richness across the state, we used a canonical analysis of principal coordinates (CAP). We found that only the distribution of Euterpe edulis Mart. and Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman showed significant effects of climate, largely because they were the most abundant and frequent species found in sampled plots. Modelling results pinpointed minimum temperature of the coldest month as the strongest predictor of palm species richness and distribution in Santa Catarina. Our results contribute to knowledge about the occurrence of native palms of the Atlantic Forest and their environmental limitations.

Este estudo examina a relação entre o clima e a riqueza de espécies e composição de palmeiras (Arecaceae) no estado brasileiro de Santa Catarina. Utilizamos dados do Inventário Florístico Florestal de Santa Catarina e do WorldClim - Global Climate Data. Nossa hipótese é de que a baixa temperatura e a precipitação limitam a riqueza e distribuição de espécies de palmeira em Santa Catarina. Para modelar a riqueza de espécies de palmeiras utilizamos um modelo linear generalizado para dados inflados de zero, e para avaliar as razões por trás das diferenças na abundância e composição de espécies de palmeiras em todo o estado, utilizamos uma análise canônica de coordenadas principais (CAP). Descobrimos que apenas a distribuição de Euterpe edulis Mart. e Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman apresentaram efeitos significativos do clima, principalmente por serem as espécies mais abundantes e frequentes encontradas nas parcelas amostradas. Os resultados de modelagem apontaram a temperatura mínima do mês mais frio como o mais forte preditor da riqueza e composição de espécies de palmeiras em Santa Catarina. Nossos resultados contribuíram para o conhecimento sobre a ocorrência de palmeiras nativas da Mata Atlântica e suas limitações ambientais.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to improve our understanding of the structure and composition of native palm communities in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. This study was carried out at “Parque Estadual da Serra Furada” (PAESF), a protected area located in southern state of Santa Catarina. A palm community survey was carried out in Dense Ombrophilous Forest in five 20 m × 100 m sampling units, totaling 1ha. All palm individuals were measured, totaling 11,183 plants, belonging to four genera and five species: Bactris setosa Mart., Euterpe edulis Mart., Geonoma gamiova Barb.Rodr., Geonoma schottiana Mart. and Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman. Euterpe edulis was the most common species, contributing the most to all phytosociological parameters; however, relatively few large individuals were found. Our study demonstrates the limitations of traditional forest surveys that ignore smaller diameter palm species and highlights the importance of the role of this group in the floristic diversity, ecosystem function, environmental services and carbon dynamics.

RESUMO As palmeiras (Arecaceae) são elementos-chave que contribuem para a biodiversidade florestal do Estado de Santa Catarina. No entanto, a Lista Oficial de Espécies da Flora Ameaçadas para o Estado de Santa Catarina é incompleta, incluindo apenas duas espécies desta família (Butia catarinensis Noblick & Lorenzi e B. eriospatha (Mart. Ex Drude) Becc.). Neste contexto, o presente estudo propõe uma revisão desta lista para a família Arecaceae, com base nas avaliações do status de conservação realizadas para cada um dos táxons nativos do Estado. Para isso foram utilizadas importantes fontes de dados sobre a distribuição das espécies, incluindo o Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), uma compilação de pesquisas publicadas, dados de coleta dos herbários do Estado, observações e dados do Inventário Florístico Florestal de Santa Catarina (IFFSC). As informações para cada espécie foram importadas para o software GeoCAT (Geospatial Conservation Assessment Tool). Foram avaliadas todas as 11 espécies de palmeiras nativas. Dez espécies foram consideradas em risco de extinção, pelas categorias e critérios da Lista Vermelha da IUCN. O grande número de espécies de palmeiras em risco de extinção chama atenção para a necessidade urgente de atualizações da lista oficial de espécies ameaçadas do Estado.

ABSTRACT Palms (Arecaceae) are key elements that contribute to the forest biodiversity of the State of Santa Catarina. However, the official List of Endangered Flora Species of that State is incomplete, including only two Arecaceae species (Butia catarinensis Noblick & Lorenzi and B. eriospatha (Mart. Ex Drude) Becc.). Within this context, this study proposes a revision of the Official List of Arecaceae for Santa Catarina, based on the assessment of the conservation status made for each of the State’s native palm species. To assess the conservation status of the palm species in Santa Catarina, important sources on species distribution were used, including the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), a compilation of previously published, herbarium information, field observations, and data from the Floristic and Forest Inventory of Santa Catarina (IFFSC). Information for each species was imported into GeoCAT software (Geospatial Conservation Assessment Tool). All 11 native palm species of Santa Catarina were evaluated. Ten species were considered at risk of extinction according to the IUCN Red List categories and criteria. This large number of palm species at risk of extinction calls attention to the urgent need for updates of the Official List of Endangered Species in the State.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the extraction process of palm species (Arecaceae) and their different forms of use by the population in the surroundings of the “Parque Estadual da Serra Furada” (PAESF), located in the south region of Santa Catarina state, as well as understand the perception of the interviewees about the park. The data were obtained through interviews with long-time residents of the area. The results were analyzed by content analysis. Four palm species were cited by the interviewees: Bactris setosa Mart., Euterpe edulis Mart., Geonoma gamiova Barb.Rodr., and Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman. The most widespread uses of these palm species were for food and in construction. The leaves were the main part of the plant used, with emphasis to E. edulis. In general, the PAESF and its palms are important resources for the interviewees; however, today, knowledge remains mostly only in the memory of the residents.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo realizar levantamento florístico e estrutural em um fragmento florestal urbano no Parque Ecológico Municipal José Milanese, no município de Criciúma, Santa Catarina, sul do Brasil, enfatizando a importância deste fragmento para a conservação de espécies ameaçadas. O levantamento consistiu na instalação de 100 parcelas contíguas de 10 × 10 m em Floresta Ombrófila Densa Submontana, sendo amostradas todas as espécies arborescentes com diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) ≥ 5 cm. Foram registradas 137 espécies, sendo Myrtaceae a família mais rica. Cryptocarya moschata Nees & Mart. apresentou o maior valor de importância, principalmente pelo maior diâmetro de seus caules, seguida por Psychotria vellosiana Benth., Myrcia pubipetala Miq. e Guatteria australis A.St.-Hil., evidenciando a possibilidade de suas utilizações em programas de restauração ecológica em fragmentos florestais da região. Conclui-se que o fragmento estudado apresenta elevada riqueza específica, quando comparado com outros na região, tornando-o uma importante fonte de propágulos para áreas adjacentes. Além disso, o conhecimento produzido a partir deste estudo poderá fornecer alternativas de uso e manejo em áreas similares, ou mesmo, ambientes florestais alterados, de forma geral.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to carry out a floristic and structural survey of an urban forest fragment at ‘Parque Ecológico Municipal José Milanese’, in the municipality of Criciúma, Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil, emphasizing the importance of this fragment for the conservation of endangered species. Survey consisted in the installation of 100 contiguous plots of 10 × 10 m in Submontane Dense Ombrophilous Forest, all tree species with a diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 5 cm were sampled. One hundred and thirty-seven (137) species were recorded, being Myrtaceae the richest family. Cryptocarya moschata Nees & Mart. presented the highest value of importance, mainly due to the larger diameter of its stems, followed by Psychotria vellosiana Benth., Myrcia pubipetala Miq. and Guatteria australis A.St.-Hil., evidencing the possibility of their use in ecological restoration programs in forest fragments of the region. We concluded that the fragment studied has a high specific richness when compared to others in the region, making it an important source of propagules for adjacent areas. In addition, the knowledge produced from this study may provide alternatives for use and management in similar areas, or even altered forest environments, in general.

Resumo Neste estudo foram analisadas a distribuição e o status de conservação das palmeiras arbustivas no estado brasileiro de Santa Catarina utilizando os dados coletados pelo Inventário Florístico Florestal de Santa Catarina (IFFSC). As palmeiras arbustivas foram amostradas sistematicamente em Unidades Amostrais (UA) distribuídas sobre o estado em parcelas de 10 × 10 km. Dentre todas as 206 UA levantadas pelo IFFSC na Floresta Pluvial e Litorânea, 86% (n= 177 UA) tiveram a presença de palmeiras arbustivas, totalizando 1738 indivíduos das seguintes espécies: Bactris setosa, Geonoma elegans, G. gamiova e G. schottiana. Para investigar o status de conservação das palmeiras arbustivas de Santa Catarina foi sobreposto o mapa das áreas prioritárias para conservação com os dados de distribuição das palmeiras arbustivas coletados pelas equipes do IFFSC. Os níveis de prioridade de conservação definidos pelo Ministério do Meio Ambiente (MMA) foram classificados como Extremamente Alto, Muito Alto, Alto e Insuficientemente Conhecido. Noventa e quatro por cento das UA contendo palmeiras arbustivas sobrepuseram áreas prioritárias para conservação, destacando a importância das palmeiras arbustivas na conservação da biodiversidade. Apesar da ampla distribuição das comunidades de palmeiras arbustivas em Santa Catarina, são necessárias pesquisas minuciosas nos remanescentes florestais tendo em vista a sensibilidade à perturbação ambiental, de forma a garantir a manutenção das populações de palmeiras arbustivas e seus serviços ecossistêmicos.

Abstract In this study, we examined the distribution and conservation status of understory palms in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina using data collected by the Floristic and Forest Inventory of Santa Catarina (IFFSC). Understory palms were systematically sampled within sampling units (SU) distributed over a state-wide 10 × 10 km grid. Among the 206 total SU monitored by IFFSC within Pluvial and Coastal Forest, 86% (n=177 SU) contained understory palms, comprising 1738 individuals from the following species: Bactris setosa, Geonoma elegans, G. gamiova, and G. schottiana. To explore the conservation status of understory palm populations in Santa Catarina, we overlaid a map of federal priority conservation areas on top of IFFSC distribution data for understory palms. Conservation priority levels defined by the Brazilian Environmental Agency (MMA) are rated Extremely High, Very High, High and Insufficiently Known. Ninety-four percent of the SU containing understory palms overlapped priority conservation areas, highlighting the centrality of understory palms in biodiversity conservation. Despite the wide distribution of understory palm communities in Santa Catarina, intense scrutiny of forest remnants is necessary in view of sensitivity to environmental disturbance, so as to guarantee the maintenance of understory palm populations and their ecosystem services.
