A dispersão eficiente, a longevidade e a capacidade das sementes de permanecer em estado latente a espera de condições adequadas de germinação no banco de sementes do solo da floresta garantem a presença de espécies arbóreas pioneiras nas áreas perturbadas. As variações estacionais e espaciais na densidade e na composição florística do banco de sementes em Florestas Tropicais Úmidas são assuntos ainda pouco compreendidos. Este trabalho verificou a existência de modificações espaço-temporais do banco de sementes presente em áreas de Floresta Tropical úmida localizadas próximas a Manaus, AM. Em cada uma das seis áreas estudadas, foram coletadas 40 amostras circulares de solo superficial (10 cm de diâmetro e 2 cm de profundidade) ao acaso. Essas amostras foram coletadas a cada dois meses, entre agosto/2004 e junho/2005,. As amostras de solo foram distribuídas em bandejas em casa de vegetação e a emergência das sementes presentes no solo foi acompanhada por 4 meses. Houve uma redução significativa (H: 14,09, p < 0,05) na densidade média de sementes no solo em junho (início da estação seca) em relação a fevereiro (meio da estação chuvosa). Houve também diferença significativa (H: 188,72, p < 0,05) na densidade média de sementes do solo presente nas diferentes áreas amostradas. Assim como para outras áreas de florestas tropicais, o banco de sementes permanente da floresta foi dominado por espécies pioneiras, principalmente da família Melastomataceae, enquanto as espécies típicas da Floresta Tropical madura foram raras no solo florestal.

The dispersion efficiency, longevity and the ability of seeds to remain latent waiting for suitable conditions for germination in the forest soil seed bank ensures the presence of pioneer tree species in disturbed areas. The seasonal and spatial variations in the density and floristic composition of the seed bank in tropical rainforests is a subject still little understood. This work verified the existence of spatio-temporal changes of the seed bank present in areas of humid tropical rain forest located near Manaus, Amazonas. In each of the six study areas, 40 circular samples of topsoil (10 cm in diameter and 2 cm deep) were randomly collected every two months, from August 2004 to June/2005. Inside a greenhouse, the collected soil samples were distributed in trays and the emergence of seeds present in the soil was accompanied during four months. There was a significant reduction (H: 14.09112, p <0.05) in the mean density of seeds presents in the soil in June (early dry season) compared to February (middle of the rainy season). There was also a significant difference (H: 188.7245, p <0.05) in the mean density of soil seeds present in the different samples areas. Similar to other tropical forest areas, the permanent seed bank in the forest was dominated by pioneer species, mainly from the family Melastomataceae, while typical tropical forest species were rare in the forest soil.

A exploração de petróleo na Amazônia, em geral, implica na abertura de clareiras. No plantio tradicional de mudas de espécies arbóreas nessas áreas remotas degradadas, usam-se os transportes aéreo e fluvial de máquinas e insumos, o que encarece o processo de restauração. Objetivando o desenvolvimento de técnicas de nucleação de baixo custo baseadas na aplicação de elementos naturais disponíveis localmente, o que permite a regeneração natural de espécies pioneiras arbóreas, na região de Urucu, AM, foram testados cinco tratamentos com cinco repetições, distribuídos em quadrado latino de 25 x 25 m: T0 (controle), T1 (aplicação de "topsoil" sobre canteiros de solo escarificado manualmente, adubado e com laterais protegidas por troncos de Cecropia spp.), T2 (aplicação de "topsoil" sobre canteiros adubados e sem proteção lateral), T3 (aplicação de "topsoil" diretamente sobre a superfície adubada da área degradada) e T4 (aplicação de "topsoil" por hidrossemeadura sobre canteiros). Foram avaliados os efeitos sobre a densidade aparente e a fertilidade do solo e a densidade de plântulas emergidas e seu crescimento. Após 18 meses, os tratamentos T1, T2 e T3 apresentaram, respectivamente, o estabelecimento de 3, 1, 1 ind. m-2, com altura similar, provenientes do "topsoil". Os tratamentos T0 e T4 não apresentaram emergência de plântulas. A densidade do solo foi mais elevada nos tratamentos (>1,3 g cm-3) que na floresta (0,95 cm-3), enquanto a aplicação de fertilizante e calcário promoveu aumento na fertilidade do solo nos tratamentos, exceto de N e matéria orgânica, com teores mais elevados na floresta.

Oil exploration in the Amazon generally results in the creation of clearings. The traditional planting of tree seedlings in these remote degraded areas uses air and river transport of machinery and supplies resulting in a very expensive restoration process. To develop low cost nucleation techniques based on the application of locally available natural elements, allowing the natural regeneration of pioneer tree species, 5 treatments with 5 replicates, distributed in a 25 x 25 m Latin square, were tested, in the region of Urucú, Amazonas: T0 (control), T1 (application of topsoil on fertilized seedbeds of manually scarified soil with sides protected using Cecropia logs), T2 (application of topsoil on fertilized seedbeds without lateral protection), T3 (application of topsoil directly on the fertilized surface of the degraded area) and T4 (application of topsoil by hydroseeding on seedbed). The effects on apparent density and soil fertility, as well as on the density and growth of emerged seedlings, were evaluated. After 18 months, the T1, T2 and T3 treatments resulted in the establishment of 3, 1 and 1 individuals m-2, respectively, with similar heights, originating from the topsoil. The T0 and T4 treatments had no seedling emergence. The soil density was higher in treatments (>1.3 g cm-3) compared to the forest (0.95 cm-3). While the application of fertilizer and limestone promoted an increase in the soil fertility in the treatments, the levels of nitrogen and organic matter were higher in the forest.

TEMA: medidas da dinâmica respiratória são freqüentemente utilizadas na clínica fonoaudiológica, mas poucos são os dados científicos destas na população infantil. OBJETIVO: estudar a dinâmica respiratória entre crianças que respiram pelo modo nasal. MÉTODO: o estudo foi realizado com uma amostra aleatória estratificada de 106 crianças respiradoras nasais de escolas da cidade de Marília / SP, entre quatro e dez anos de ambos os sexos. Foram realizadas as medidas de capacidade vital (CV), nas posições em pé e sentada, com e sem oclusão nasal; de tempo máximo de fonação (TMF) de vogais e consoantes sustentadas, além de fala em seqüência com a contagem de números. RESULTADOS: a medida média da CV na posição em pé com e sem oclusão nasal foi 1515,56 ml e 1538,67 ml respectivamente e na posição sentada, 1524 ml e 1539,15 ml respectivamente; o TMF das vogais em segundos foi: /a/ = 8,32 , /i/ = 8,61 e /u/ 8,42; o de consoantes foi: /s/ = 6,64 e /z/ = 7,65 e o de seqüência de números foi de 7,76 segundos. Resultados: observou-se que o tempo médio destas medidas aumentou progressivamente conforme as faixas etárias. Tanto para o TMF das vogais como, para o das consoantes, houve diferença estatística significante (p < 0,05) nas idades mais distantes, ou seja, entre quatro e dez anos, quatro e nove, e quatro e oito anos. Em faixas etárias consecutivas não houve diferença estatística significante nos valores de CV. Houve forte associação entre a CV e o crescimento físico da criança. CONCLUSÃO: esse estudo mostrou medidas de dinâmica respiratória em crianças que podem ser úteis no diagnóstico e terapia fonoaudiológica. Outras pesquisas deveriam ser desenvolvidas para adicionais informações sobre o assunto.

BACKGROUND: respiratory dynamics measurements are frequently used in the speech-language pathology practice, but few are the scientific data for children. AIM: to study the respiratory dynamics in children with nasal breathing. METHOD: the study was performed with a stratified random sample of 106 nasal breathing children, male and female, from schools of the city of Marília-SP, with ages between four and ten years. The following measurements were obtained: vital capacity (VC) in both standing and sitting positions, with and without nasal occlusion; maximum phonation time (MPT) of sustained vowels and consonants and also of speech when counting numbers. RESULTS: the mean values for VC in the standing position with and without nasal occlusion were of 1515.56ml and 1538.67ml respectively and for the sitting position of 1524ml and 1539.15ml respectively. MPT of vowels in seconds were: /a/ = 8.32, /i/ = 8.61 and /u/ = 8.42; of consonants: /s/ = 6.64 and /z/ = 7.65; and when counting numbers: 7.76. It was observed that the mean values of these measurements progressively increased according to age. There was a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) not only for the MPT of vowels but also for the MPT of consonants in older children, i.e. between 4 and 10 year olds, 4 and 9 year olds and 4 and 8 year olds. There was no significant statistical difference for the VC values in consecutive age groups. There was a strong association between VC and the child's physical development. CONCLUSION: this study presented respiratory dynamics measurements in children that can be used for the speech-language diagnosis and therapy. Other studies should be developed in order to bring additional information on the subject.
