Abstract The objective of the article is to present a discussion about the methodological difficulties faced in carrying out research on the identification of criminal suspects in Brazil - a practice known as “founded suspicion”, provided for in art. 244 of the Criminal Procedure Code - especially studies aimed at understanding such identification as racially discriminatory. Comparing how this debate emerged in the United States, we question the reasons why this topic faced impasses in forming a research agenda in the country, in addition to pointing out the strategies used by Brazilian researchers to address such issues. BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is characterised as a chronic inflammatory disease of the axial skeleton. The force platform is an option for performing the postural assessment of these individuals OBJECTIVES: To review and evaluate the behaviour of the centre of pressure (CoP) variables during the postural control examination in patients with AS compared to a control group METHOD: A systematic review, registered in PROSPERO, that followed the PRISMA Statement. A search was carried out in the following databases: Medline, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and Scielo, from 1945 to 2023. Studies were selected that aimed to understand the use of the force platform for the assessment of postural control. The risk of bias assessment was performed using the AXIS tool RESULTS: Five studies were included, with a total of 247 participants. The assessment of risk of bias presented high scores in the AXIS tool. Patients with a diagnosis of AS presented increased thoracic kyphosis in most of the studies, as well as large displacements in the anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) directions, and altered total mean velocity (TMV) and frequency, indicating worse postural stability. Abstract In this paper, the application of AI and machine learning (ML) to the study of wireless propagation channels is investigated in two parts: first, an artificial neural network model is used to improve path loss prediction, and then, a pattern recognition model using multilayer perceptron (MLP) networks is used to identify and remove impulsive noise in power delay profiles (PDP). These studies were conducted based on field measurements in the 2400 MHz band in a public square with vegetation. The results are analyzed and compared with ordinary least squares (OLS) nonlinear regression results and results from similar studies. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values between the experimental results of mean path loss and those provided by each propagation model are presented. The adjustment performed by OLS nonlinear regression and ANN significantly reduced the RMSE. The best results are those presented by artificial neural networks, with RMSE of 0.39 when using four neurons in the hidden layer of the ANN. Abstract Objectives To perform a systematic review of the literature on the anatomy of the medial meniscotibial ligaments (MTLs), and to present the most accepted findings, as well as the evolution of the anatomical knowledge on this structure. Materials and Methods An electronic search was conducted in the MEDLINE/PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE and Cochrane library databases with no date restrictions. The following index terms were used in the search: anatomy AND meniscotibial AND ligament AND medial. The review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. We included anatomical studies of the knee were included, such as cadaver dissections, histological and/or biological investigations, and/or imaging of the medial MTL anatomy. Results Eight articles that met the inclusion criteria were selected. The first article was published in 1984 and the last, in 2020. The total sample in the 8 articles was of 96 patients. ABSTRACT The fitting of volume models by the traditional method (data obtained by means of scaling several trees), is the most used way to obtain volume equations. This method requires a lot of effort and is quite costly, therefore some alternatives have been developed to decrease the sampling of the number of trees and obtain results of estimates similar to that obtained by the traditional method, highlighting the mixed modeling applied to calibrate equations. In this work, the general objective of the research was to calibrate the Schumacher-Hall volume model by predicting random effects at the stand level and comparing it with the equations obtained using the traditional approach. The database is made up of 670 trees with ages varying from 1 to 10.75 years. The calibrations tested in the mixed model were using: (i) the largest tree of variable d for each stand; (ii) the two largest trees of variable d for each stand; (iii) the three largest trees in d for each stand; (iv) the four largest trees in d for each stand; (v) the five largest trees in d for each stand; (vi) the median tree for variable d in each stand; vii) one random tree in each stand; viii) three trees, being the smallest tree, the mean tree and the largest tree for the variable d for each stand; ix) three trees, being the mean tree, the mean tree minus two standard deviations and the mean tree plus two standard deviations for the variable d in each stand. RESUMO O ajuste dos modelos de volume pelo método tradicional (dados obtidos por meio de cubagem de várias árvores) é a maneira mais utilizada para obter equações de volume. Este método demanda muito esforço e é bastante oneroso, portanto algumas alternativas têm sido desenvolvidas para diminuir a amostragem do número de árvores e obter resultados de estimativas semelhantes ao obtido pelo método tradicional, destacando-se a modelagem mista aplicada para calibrar equações. Neste trabalho, o objetivo da pesquisa foi calibrar o modelo de volume de Schumacher-Hall por meio da predição de efeitos aleatórios em nível de povoamento e compará-lo com as equações obtidas pela abordagem tradicional. Resumen El objetivo del estudio fue investigar los efectos de la implementación de cuotas raciales en la representación de los negros en el sector legal, a partir del racismo estructural como práctica esclavista de discriminación racial. Se adoptó una metodología cualitativa, con entrevistas semiestructuradas y análisis documental de avisos públicos y resultados de concursos públicos que prevén cuotas raciales para carreras de derecho en el estado de Río de Janeiro en los últimos diez años. Se seleccionaron once titulares de cargos directivos en carreras jurídicas ‒fiscal, juez, procurador fiscal y defensor‒ autodeclarados negros. Con base en la percepción de los entrevistados, se realizó un análisis de la aplicación de la política de cuotas en las licitaciones públicas de las carreras de derecho. Los resultados indican evidencias de fallas en la implementación de esta política, tanto con base en disposiciones legales y análisis de documentos, como en la percepción de los encuestados. Abstract This study investigates the effects of the implementation of racial quotas on the representation of black people in the legal sector, based on structural racism as a slave-holding practice of racial discrimination. A qualitative methodology was adopted, with semi-structured interviews and documental analysis of public notices and results of public tenders, with a prediction of racial quotas for legal careers in the state of Rio de Janeiro in the last ten years. Eleven holders of leadership positions in legal careers were selected - prosecutor, judge, attorney, and defender - self-declared black. Based on the interviewees’ perception’, an analysis was made of applying the quota policy in public tenders for legal careers. The results point to evidence of failures in the implementation of this policy, both based on legal provisions and document analysis, and on the respondents’ perceptions. Resumo O objetivo do estudo foi investigar os efeitos da implementação das cotas raciais na representatividade de negros no setor jurídico, tendo por base o racismo estrutural como prática escravocrata de discriminação racial. Para tanto, adotou-se uma abordagem qualitativa, com a realização de entrevistas semiestruturadas e análise documental dos editais e resultados dos concursos públicos com previsão de cotas raciais para as carreiras jurídicas do estado do Rio de Janeiro nos últimos dez anos. Foram selecionados 11 ocupantes de posições de liderança nas carreiras jurídicas - promotor, juiz, procurador e defensor - autodeclarados negros. ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the association between obesity and hospitalization in mild COVID-19 adult outpatients in Brazil. Subjects and methods: Adults with signs and symptoms suggestive of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection who sought treatment in two hospital (public and private) emergency departments were prospectively enrolled. Patients with confirmed COVID-19 at inclusion were followed by phone calls at days D7, D14 and D28. Multivariable logistic regression models were employed to explore the association between obesity and other potential predictors for hospitalization. Results: A total of 1,050 participants were screened, and 297 completed the 28-day follow-up and were diagnosed with COVID-19 by RT-PCR. The median age was 37.2 (IQR 29.7-44.6) years, and 179 (60.0%) were female. The duration of symptoms was 3.0 (IQR 2.0-5.0) days, and 10.0 (IQR 8.0-12.0) was the median number of symptoms at inclusion. Ninety-five (32.0%) individuals had obesity, and 233 (78.5%) had no previous medical conditions. Twenty-three participants (7.7%) required hospitalization during the follow-up period. After adjusting, obesity (BMI ≥ 30.0 kg/m2) (OR = 2.69, 95% CI 1.63-4.83, P < 0.001) and older age (OR = 1.05, 95% CI 1.01-1.09, P < 0.001) were significantly associated with higher risks of hospitalization. Conclusion: Obesity, followed by aging, was the main factor associated with hospital admission for COVID-19 in a young population in a low-middle income country. Our findings highlighted the need to promote additional protection for individuals with obesity, such as vaccination, and to encourage lifestyle changes.

Abstract Objective: to evaluate the accuracy of an antibody point-of-care lateral flow immunoassay (LFI -Wondfo Biotech Co., Guangzhou, China) in a pediatric population. Methods: children and adolescents (2 months to 18 years) with signs and symptoms suggestive of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection were prospectively investigated with nasopharyngeal RT-PCR and LFI at the emergency room. RT-PCR was performed at baseline, and LFI at the same time or scheduled for those with less than 7 days of the clinical picture. Overall accuracy, sensitivity and specificity were assessed, as well as according to the onset of symptoms (7-13 or ≥14 days) at the time of the LFI test. Results: In 175 children included, RT-PCR and LFI were positive in 51 (29.14%) and 36 (20.57%), respectively. The overall sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value was 70.6% (95%CI 56.2-82.5), 96.8% (95%CI 91.9-99.1), 90.0% (95%CI 77.2-96.0), and 88.9% (95%CI 83.9-92.5), respectively. At 7-13 and ≥14 days after the onset of symptoms, sensitivity was 60.0% (95%CI 26.2-87.8) and 73.2% (95%CI 57.1-85.8) and specificity was 97.9% (95%CI 88.7-99.9) and 96.1% (95%CI 89.0-99.2), respectively. Conclusion: Despite its high specificity, in the present study the sensitivity of LFI in children was lower (around 70%) than most reports in adults. Although a positive result is informative, a negative LFI test cannot rule out COVID-19 in children.

Resumo: O objetivo deste artigo é discutir como ocorre a mediação do literário no curso de Letras de uma universidade do sul do Brasil da rede da Associação Catarinense das Fundações Educacionais (Acafe) e o impacto dessa mediação na formação do(a) futuro(a) docente. É uma pesquisa qualitativa de natureza exploratória. O instrumento de coleta utilizado consistiu em entrevista por meio de grupo focal com oito acadêmicos do curso de Letras, na disciplina de Estudos Literários. A professora de Literatura não foi entrevistada, mas é considerada sujeito de pesquisa porque, mediante os depoimentos dos acadêmicos, identificamos as percepções sobre a atuação dela em sala de aula, suas escolhas metodológicas e teóricas. A análise dos dados ocorreu de acordo com a análise de conteúdo segundo Franco (2008). O estudo fundamentou-se em Barthes (2015, 1992), Duarte Júnior (2010, 2012), Mirian Martins (2005, 2014), Neitzel et al. (2017), Todorov (2020), entre outros. Os resultados indicam que: a mediação da leitura do literário ocorreu a partir da concepção da professora de que mediar implica uma postura de valorização do outro; a mediação deu-se por meio de objetos e espaços propositores - livros, pinturas, músicas, cartões-postais, trechos de filmes, entre outros -, os quais a professora explorou para oportunizar aos(às) acadêmicos(as) a apreciação do texto literário como objeto estético e artístico; os espaços propositores, como corredores, escadas, bibliotecas, espaços ao ar livre e a própria sala de aula, foram experimentados para ampliar as percepções dos(as) acadêmicos(as) sobre a obra e por ela serem afetados(as). As experiências reverberaram e há indícios de que contribuíram para a educação estética dos(as) futuros(as) docentes.

Abstract: This paper aims to discuss how literary mediation occurs in a Language and Literature course at a university in the Southern of Brazil, which is part of Santa Catarina’s Association of Educational Foundations (Acafe) and its impact on the education of future teachers. This is an exploratory qualitative research. Data was collected through an interview with an eight-student focus group taking the Literary Studies subject. Though not an interviewee, the literature teacher was considered a research participant because, through the academics' testimonies, student’s perceptions were identified about her performance in the classroom, and her methodological and theoretical choices. The data analysis followed the content analysis based on Franco (2008). The study was drawn from Barthes (2015, 1992), Duarte Júnior (2010, 2012), Martins (2005, 2014), Neitzel et al. (2017), Todorov (2020), among others. Results indicate: the mediation of the literary reading occurred from the professor’s conception that to mediate implies an attitude of valuing the other; mediation took place by the proposition of objects and spaces - books, paintings, music, postcards, excerpts from films, among others -, which the professor explored to give the students the opportunity to appreciate the literary text as an aesthetic and artistic object; the proposition spaces, such as corridors, stairs, libraries, outdoor spaces and the classroom, were experimented to broaden the students’ perceptions of the book and to be affected by it. The experiences rippled and there are indications that they contributed to the aesthetic education of the future teachers.

Resumen: El objetivo de este artículo es discutir cómo ocurre la mediación de lo literario en la carrera de Letras de una Universidad del sur de Brasil de la red 'Associação Catarinense das Fundações Educacionais (Acafe)' y su impacto en la formación del(la) futuro(a) docente. Es una investigación cualitativa de naturaleza exploratoria. El instrumento de recolección de datos consistió en una entrevista a través de un Focus Group de 8 (ocho) estudiantes del grado de Letras, en la asignatura de Estudios Literarios. La profesora de literatura no fue entrevistada, pero se la considera sujeto de investigación porque, a través de los testimonios de los estudiantes universitarios, identificamos sus percepciones sobre su desempeño en el aula, sus elecciones metodológicas y teóricas. El análisis de los datos fue de acuerdo con el contenido, según Franco (2008). El estudio se fundamentó en Barthes (2015, 1992), Duarte Júnior (2010, 2012) Martins (2005, 2014), Neitzel et al. (2017), Todorov (2020), entre otros. Los resultados indican: la mediación de la lectura de lo literario ocurrió a partir de la concepción de la profesora de que mediar implica una postura de valoración del otro; la mediación se dio por medio de objetos y espacios propulsores - libros, pinturas, música, tarjetas postales, extractos de películas, y otros-, que la docente exploró con el fin de posibilitar a los(as) estudiantes universitarios(as) la apreciación del texto literario como objeto estético y artístico; los espacios propulsores, como pasillos, escaleras, bibliotecas, espacios al aire libre y el proprio aula en sí, fueron experimentados a fin de ampliar las percepciones de los estudiantes del grado sobre la obra y analizar como ella les afectó. Las experiencias repercutieron y hay indicios de que contribuyeron a la educación estética de los(las) futuros(as) docentes.

Materiais e Métodos Foi realizado um estudo clínico randomizado, aberto e prospectivo, que incluiu pacientes com esqueleto imaturo que foram submetidos à cirurgia para fraturas da parte distal do rádio e a ulna. Os participantes foram randomizados em dois grupos, um com fixação apenas da fratura do rádio e outro com fixação das fraturas do rádio e da ulna, e foram acompanhados clínica e radiologicamente por até 12 semanas de pós-operatório. Resultados Dezesseis crianças foram selecionadas. No intraoperatório, a fluoroscopia foi ativada por mais tempo na fixação da ulna (p = 0,011) e o tempo cirúrgico foi maior nesse grupo (p = 0,014). Nas avaliações pós-operatórias, o grupo cuja cirurgia envolveu a fixação de ambos os ossos teve escore de dor menor depois da cirurgia (p < 0,001) e menos tempo de afastamento da escola (p < 0,001). Conclusões Neste estudo, a dor pós-operatória e o afastamento da escola foram menores quando se realizou fixação do rádio e da ulna. Nível de Evidência II; Estudo randomizado controlado.

ABSTRACT Introduction Fractures of the distal third of the forearm are common in the pediatric population. Conservative treatment of an ipsilateral fracture of the distal ulna metaphysis is one of the risk factors for loss of reduction. Percutaneous fixation of the fracture with K-wires is recommended. This study aims to evaluate the outcome of percutaneous fixation of both bones performed as the primary treatment. Materials and Methods A randomized, open, prospective, clinical trial was conducted, including skeletally immature patients who underwent surgery for fractures of the distal radius and ulna. They were randomized into two groups, one with fixation only of the radius fracture and the other with fixation of both the radius and the ulna fractures, and they were followed clinically and radiologically for up to 12 weeks postoperatively. Results Sixteen children were selected. In the intraoperative period, fluoroscopy was activated for a longer time when fixing the ulna (p = 0.011) and the surgical time was longer in this group (p = 0.014). In the postoperative evaluations, the group whose surgery involved the fixation of both bones had a lower postoperative pain score (p <0.001) and less time away from school (p <0.001). Conclusions In this study, postoperative pain and absence from school were both less when fixation of the radius and ulna was performed. Evidence Level II; Randomized Controlled Study.

Resumo A Curcuma longa L., planta conhecida popularmente como açafrão, tem sido amplamente estudada por suas diversas propriedades terapêuticas, incluindo a ação antineoplásica. O extrato etanólico da planta contém diversos compostos fenólicos, com destaque para a curcumina. O osteossarcoma é um tumor ósseo predominante em cães e humanos, caracterizado por apresentar alto potencial metastático e prognóstico desfavorável. Procurou-se investigar os efeitos de diferentes concentrações de curcumina do extrato etanólico de açafrão sobre células de osteossarcoma canino de cultura estabelecida. As células foram cultivadas e submetidas ao tratamento com extrato com diferentes concentrações de curcumina (0, 10 μM, 20 μM, 50 μM, 100 μM e 1000 μM) e tempos de exposição (24h, 48h e 72h) pelo EEA. Inicialmente, foram realizados: técnica de redução do tetrazólio (MTT) e cálculo da IC50. Posteriormente, após o tratamento com o extrato, realizou-se o ensaio de imunocitoquímica para verificar a expressão de p53 mutada e estudar o potencial proliferativo das células malignas; Bcl-2, com intuito de averiguar o estímulo de via antiapoptótica; e o marcador Ki-67, que sinaliza aumento no grau de malignidade. O extrato promoveu proliferação de células de osteossarcoma canino, com incremento de até 3819,74% na concentração de 50μM de curcumina. O composto também alterou a expressão das proteínas p53 mutante e Ki-67 significativamente, mas não alterou a expressão de Bcl-2, mostrando que não induziu a via antiapoptótica mediada por esta. Estes resultados demonstram que o extrato etanólico do açafrão apresenta potencial proliferativo sobre células de osteossarcoma canino, sugerindo a necessidade de conscientização e conhecimento dos reais efeitos de determinados compostos naturais, considerados seguros ao serem utilizados como tratamento de diversas enfermidades.

Abstract Curcuma longa L., also known as turmeric, has been widely studied for its various therapeutic properties, including antineoplastic action. The ethanolic extract of the plant contains several phenolic compounds, especially curcumin. Osteosarcoma is a predominant bone tumor in dogs and humans, characterized by high metastatic potential and an unfavorable prognosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of turmeric ethanol extract on canine osteosarcoma cells from established culture. The cells were cultured and treated with different curcumin concentrations (0, 10 μM, 20 μM, 50 μM, 100 μM, and 1000 μM) and exposure times (24h, 48h, and 72h). We first performed tetrazolium reduction technique (MTT) assay and calculated IC50. An immunocytochemistry assay was performed after extract treatment to verify the expression of mutated p53 and therefore study the proliferative potential of malignant cells; Bcl-2 and Ki-67 were used to assess apoptosis and the degree of malignancy, respectively. The extract enhanced the proliferation of canine osteosarcoma cells, reaching 3,819.74% at 50 μM of curcumin. The extract also significantly altered the expression of mutated p53 and Ki-67 proteins but not that of Bcl-2, suggesting that it did not induce this antiapoptotic pathway. Overall, these results are prerequisite to better understanding how natural compounds such as turmeric ethanolic extract affect cell proliferation and could be used to treat various diseases.

ABSTRACT Determination of the chromosome base number of a taxon is fundamental to understanding karyotypic variation and its implications for the evolution of that group. This usually requires careful evaluation of cytological literature and robust phylogenetic support. The base number for the family Rutaceae (x = 9 or x = 18) has long been the subject of debate. Here, we analyzed the banding pattern, rDNA sites, and genome size of Dictyoloma vandellianum, subfamily Cneoroideae, the sister group of the remaining Rutaceae, and revised critical points about the chromosome base number of the family. We found that this species has n = 9, which differs from the n = 18 possessed by other cytologically known Cneoroideae species. Thus, n = 9 occurs in the main clades of Rutaceae and is the most probable base number of the family. The hypothesis of x = 18 as the base number is no longer sustainable, although n = 18 is very common in Rutaceae. Moreover, the fluorescent banding pattern and the relatively large genome size (1C = 1.3 pg) of D. vandellianum suggest that its chromosomal organization is highly divergent from Aurantieae, the only large Rutaceae clade where species with n = 9 are greatly dominant.
