The suitability of Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), Aulacorthum solani (Kaltenbach) and Acyrthosiphon kondoi Shinji (Hemiptera: Aphididae) as hosts for the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi Haliday was evaluated by assessing host size, host preference, and host quality. Tests were carried out in an environmental chamber at 22 ± 1ºC, 70 ± 10% RH and 12h photophase. Replicates (11) consisted of one 24h-old mated female of A. ervi without a previous oviposition experience. Female was released into a Petri dish (5 cm) with 20 2nd and 3rd instars of one of each aphid species tested on a leaf disc of the host plant onto a 1% water-agar layer. Parasitoid emergency was lower in A. kondoi (78.7%) compared to M. euphorbiae (92.2%) and A. solani (91.7%). Acyrthosiphon kondoi (0.36 mm) was the smallest host. The parasitoid showed preference (74.0% parasitism) for M. euphorbiae, the largest host (hind tibia length = 0.73 mm), which in turn yielded larger A. ervi females (0.75 mm).

A temperatura é o fator abiótico chave influenciando o desenvolvimento e a reprodução dos afídeos. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes temperaturas na reprodução, assim como determinar a tabela de vida de fertilidade de Aulacorthum solani (Kaltenbach), Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) e Uroleucon ambrosiae (Thomas) (Aphididae, Macrosiphini). Ninfas foram mantidas em placas de Petri (15 cm de diâmetro), sobre disco foliar de alface, suportado por uma camada de solução ágar/água a 1%, em câmaras climatizadas nas temperaturas de 16, 19, 22, 25 e 28±1ºC; UR de 70±10% e fotofase de 12 h, até atingirem o estágio adulto. Esses adultos foram avaliados nas mesmas temperaturas a cada 24 h sob microscópio estereoscópico quanto aos parâmetros reprodutivos e longevidade. O período reprodutivo de A. solani e M. euphorbiae foi decrescente com o aumento da temperatura. U. ambrosiae apresentou período reprodutivo estável de 19 a 25ºC. A produção total de ninfas das três espécies de pulgões foi decrescente com o aumento da temperatura. A longevidade de A. solani e M. euphorbiae foi decrescente com o aumento da temperatura. As maiores taxas de sobrevivência (lx) e fertilidade específica (mx) foram observadas entre 16 e 22ºC para as três espécies de pulgões. A temperatura mais favorável para a reprodução e crescimento populacional de A. solani, M. euphorbiae e U. ambrosiae foi 22ºC, como demonstrado pelo conjunto dos valores de l x e m x, altos valores da taxa reprodutiva e taxa intrínseca de aumento, e curtos intervalos entre gerações e tempo de duplicação da população.

Temperature is a key abiotic factor influencing the development and reproduction of aphids. The effect of temperature on the reproduction of three aphid species Aulacorthum solani (Kaltenbach), Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) and Uroleucon ambrosiae (Thomas) (Aphididae, Macrosiphini) has been investigated and fertility life tables were determined. Nymphs were reared in climatic chambers at temperatures of 16, 19, 22, 25, and 28 ± 1ºC, RH 70 ± 10% and 12 h photophase. Female adult aphids developed at these temperatures were then used in experiments in which pre-reproductive and reproductive periods were evaluated every 24 h. In addition, the number of nymphs produced and longevity were determined at each temperature. The reproduction period of A. solani and M. euphorbiae decreased with increasing temperature, whereas that of U. ambrosiae was maintained between 19 and 25ºC. The total number of nymphs produced by the aphids decreased as the temperature increased. The longevities of A. solani and M. euphorbiae decreased with increasing temperature but remained stable for U. ambrosiae between 19 and 25ºC. The largest survival rate (l x) and specific fertility (m x) values were found at 16 and 22ºC for all three species. The most favourable temperature for reproduction of A. solani, M. euphorbiae and U. ambrosiae was 22ºC, as demonstrated by the l x and m x profiles, the high values of net reproductive rates and intrinsic rates of increase, and the short intervals between generation and doubling times.

O endoparasitóide solitário Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) tem uma ampla faixa de afídeos hospedeiros e a qualidade desses afídeos pode interferir nos parâmetros biológicos do mesmo. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a qualidade de três Macrosiphini, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach) e Myzus persicae (Sulzer), e três Aphidini, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) e Aphis gossypii Glover, como hospedeiros de L. testaceipes e determinar a possível relação da preferência do parasitóide com o tamanho e a qualidade do hospedeiro. Os testes foram conduzidos em câmara climática a 25 ± 1°C, 70 ± 10% UR e 12h fotofase. O parasitóide não ovipositou em B. brassicae e L. erysimi e as demais espécies foram adequadas nutricionalmente ao parasitóide. L. testaceipes apresentou preferência por pulgões da tribo Aphidini e esses hospedeiros apresentaram maior qualidade para o parasitóide quando comparados aos Macrosiphini. Foi encontrada relação entre tamanho, preferência e qualidade entre os Aphidini. O parasitóide apresentou preferência (76,7% de parasitismo) por R. maidis, o maior hospedeiro (tíbia posterior de 0,281 mm), e este proporcionou maior tamanho (tíbia posterior de 0,49 mm) e emergência (95,6%) ao parasitóide quando comparado a A. gossypii (55,7% de parasitismo), hospedeiro menor (0,266 mm) e que proporcionou menor tamanho (0,45 mm) e maior mortalidade ao parasitóide (72,1% de emergência). Contudo, o desenvolvimento de ovo a múmia foi menor e a longevidade foi maior em A. gossypii (6,3 e 5,4 dias respectivamente) do que em R. maidis (6,7 e 3,8 dias respectivamente), não estando relacionados ao tamanho do hospedeiro.

Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) has a broad aphid host range; however the quality of these preys may interfere in its biological feature. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of three Macrosiphini, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach) and Myzus persicae (Sulzer), and three Aphidini Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) and Aphis gossypii Glover as hosts to L. testaceipes and to determine the relation possible of host preference, of size and quality of the host. The tests were carried out in climatic chamber at 25 ± 1°C, RH 70 ± 10% and 12h photophase. The parasitoid did not oviposite in B. brassicae and L. erysimi, while the other species were nutritionally suitable to the parasitoid. L. testaceipes showed preference for aphids from tribe Aphidini and these hosts presented better quality to the parasitoid when compared to Macrosiphini. Interactions among size, preference and quality between the Aphidini were found. L testaceipes showed preference (parasitism rate 76.7%) for R. maidis, the bigger host (hind tibia with 0.281 mm). This host provided bigger size (hind tibia with 0.49 mm) and higher emergence rate (95.6%) to the parasitoid when compared to A. gossypii (parasitism rate of 55.7%). Also the smaller host A. gossypii (0.266 mm) provided smaller size hind tibia (0.45 mm) and higher mortality of the parasitoid (emergence rate 72.1%). However, the development time was shorter and the longevity was higher in A. gossypii (6.3 and 5.4 days, respectively) when compared to the host R. maidis (6.7 and 3.8 days, respectively), and not been related to host size.

A taxa intrínseca de crescimento populacional de um parasitóide relacionada ao hospedeiro tem papel importante em programas de controle biológico. Este trabalho avaliou a fertilidade de Aphidius colemani Viereck sobre Aphis gossypii Glover, por meio de tabela de vida de fertilidade. Na avaliação da mortalidade de imaturos, desenvolvimento e razão sexual de A. colemani foram utilizadas 12 fêmeas, acasaladas, com 24h de idade e 240 ninfas de A. gossypii (com três dias de idade). Na avaliação da fertilidade foram utilizadas 15 fêmeas. O número de ninfas do pulgão oferecidas durante o ciclo de vida do parasitóide foram oferecidas: 300 ninfas no 1° dia, 250 ninfas no 2°, 200 ninfas no 3°, 150 ninfas no 4°, 100 ninfas no 5° dia, e 50 ninfas nos dias subseqüentes. A mortalidade de imaturos de A. colemani foi de 22,1%. O desenvolvimento de machos e fêmeas foi de 12,0 e 11,8 dias, respectivamente e a razão sexual de 0,6. As fêmeas de A. colemani depositaram 420 ovos e tiveram longevidade de 5,9 dias. A taxa líquida de reprodução (Ro) foi de 194,81 fêmeas, a taxa intrínseca de crescimento populacional (r m) de 0,384 fêmeas/fêmea/dia, a razão finita de aumento (lambda) de 1,48 fêmeas/dia, tempo médio entre gerações (T) de 13,74 dias e o tempo de duplicação da população (TD) de 12,60 dias. A. colemani apresenta alto potencial de crescimento populacional, tendo como hospedeiro A. gossypii, podendo ser um agente efetivo de controle biológico deste afídeo.

The intrinsic rate of increase of a parasitoid related to its hosts play an important role in biological control programs. In this work, fertility of the parasitoid Aphidius colemani Viereck was evaluated on Aphis gossypii Glover by means of a fertility life table. To determine the immature mortality, the development time and the sex ratio, 12 mated females of A. colemani (24h old), and 240 nymphs of A. gossypii (3 days old) were used. To evaluate fertility 15 mated females (24h old) were used. For each parasitoid female, 300 nymphs were offered in the 1st day, 250 nymphs in the 2nd day, 200 nymphs in the 3rd day, 150 nymphs in the 4th day, 100 nymphs in the 5th day and 50 nymphs in the other days. Immature mortality of A. colemani was 22.1%, development time of males and females were 12.0 and 11.8 days, respectively, and sex ratio was 0.6. The females of A. colemani laid 420 eggs and had longevity of 5.9 days. The net reproduction rate (Ro) was 194.81 females and the intrinsic rate of increase (r m) was 0.384 females/females/day. The finite rate of increase (lambda) was 1.48 females/day, the mean length of a generation (T) was 13.74 days and the time to duplication the population (TD) was 12.60 days. The parasitoid A. colemani had a great potential of population growth on A. gossypii as a host and could be an effective biological control agent of this aphid.

Aphidius colemani Viereck está entre os principais inimigos naturais utilizados no controle biológico de Aphis gossypii Glover. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar o desenvolvimento de A. colemani e as alterações causadas pelo parasitismo no hospedeiro A. gossypii em diferentes temperaturas e estimar as exigências térmicas do parasitóide. O experimento foi conduzido em câmaras climatizadas a 16, 19, 22, 25, 28 e 31 ± 1°C, com 70 ± 10% U.R. e fotofase de 12h. Ninfas de 2º instar de A. gossypii foram parasitadas uma vez e individualizadas em tubos de vidro (2,5 cm x 8,5 cm), contendo disco foliar de pepino (2 cm) e solução agar/água a 1%. O período da oviposição à formação da múmia (11,9; 9,8; 7,7; 6,4 e 6,4 dias) e o da oviposição ao adulto de A. colemani (19,4; 16,2; 12,6; 10,5 e 10,7 dias) diminuíram com o aumento da temperatura no intervalo de 16ºC e 25ºC. A porcentagem de múmias formadas e a de emergência do parasitóide, assim como a longevidade diminuíram com o incremento da temperatura. Não houve formação de múmias a 31°C. O parasitóide A. colemani apresentou temperatura base inferior de desenvolvimento de 5,94°C e constante térmica de 200 GD. As alterações ocasionadas no hospedeiro A. gossypii pelo parasitismo foram minimizadas na temperatura de 31°C, sendo que 98% dos hospedeiros não apresentaram sintomas de parasitismo e produziram ninfas. A temperatura de 22°C foi a mais adequada para o desenvolvimento de A. colemani.

Aphidius colemani Viereck is among the main natural enemies used for biological control of Aphis gossypii Glover. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the development of A. colemani and the alterations caused by the parasitism in the host A. gossypii in different temperatures and to estimate the thermal requirements of the parasitoid. The experiments were carried out in controlled environmental chambers at 16, 19, 22, 25, 28 and 31 ± 1ºC, 70 ± 10% RH, and 12h photophase. Second-instar nymphs of A. gossypii were parasitized once and kept individually in glass tubes (2.5 cm x 8.5 cm), containing leaf disc of cucumber (2 cm) and 1% water/agar solution. The development time of A. colemani, from oviposition to mummies (11.9, 9.8, 7.7, 6.4 and 6.4 days) and from oviposition to adult (19.4, 16.2, 12.6, 10.5 and 10.7 days) decreased with the increase of the temperature from 16ºC to 25ºC. The rates of mummies and the emergence of the parasitoid, and its longevity also decreased with the increase of the temperature. Mummies were not produced at 31ºC. The lower temperature threshold of A. colemani was 5.94ºC and its thermal constant was 200 degrees-day. The alterations caused by the parasitoid in the A. gossypii host were minimized at 31ºC, where 98% of the host did not show symptoms of parasitism and produced nymphs. The temperature of 22ºC was optimal for the development time of A. colemani.

Os parasitóides Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) e Aphidius colemani Viereck desempenham importante papel na regulação das populações de afídeos que atacam crisântemo em ambientes protegidos. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a interação controle biológico e resistência de plantas, por meio do desenvolvimento e parasitismo de L. testaceipes e A. colemani no pulgão Aphis gossypii Glover mantido nas cultivares comerciais de crisântemo suscetível Yellow Snowdon (YS) e resistente White Reagan (WR). O experimento foi conduzido em câmara climática à temperatura de 22 ± 1°C, UR de 70 ± 10% e fotofase de 12h, utilizando ninfas de 2º e 3º ínstares de A. gossypii atacadas apenas uma vez pelos parasitóides. O desenvolvimento foi de 15,0 e 12,9 dias, para L. testaceipes e de 17,0 e 16,3 dias para A. colemani em A. gossypii nas cvs. YS e WR, respectivamente. O parasitismo por L. testaceipes foi maior em A. gossypii na cv. YS (68,4%), quando comparado com WR (50,0%), sendo que para A. colemani não houve diferença significativa (46,8 e 35,0% para YS e WR, respectivamente). As porcentagens de emergência de L. testaceipes e A. colemani em A. gossypii mantido em YS e WR foram, respectivamente 91,6% e 85,3% e 78,1% e 100,0%. A longevidade de A. colemani e a taxa de parasitismo de L. testaceipes foram influenciadas negativamente pela cultivar WR. Os resultados indicam uma interação positiva entre controle biológico com parasitóides e a cultivar resistente WR no controle de A. gossypii em crisântemo em sistema protegido.

The parasitoids Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) and Aphidius colemani Viereck play an important role on the regulation of aphid populations on chrysanthemum grown in greenhouses. This study evaluated the interaction of biological control and plant resistance by the development and the parasitism of L. testaceipes and A. colemani on Aphis gossypii Glover. The aphid host was kept on commercial cultivars of chrysanthemum susceptible Yellow Snowdon (YS) and resistant White Reagan (WR). The experiment was carried out in climatic chamber at 22 ± 1ºC, 70 ± 10% RH, and photophase 12h. Nymphs of 2nd and 3rd instars of A. gossypii attacked only once by the parasitoids were used in the experiment. The development time was 15.0 and 12.9 days for L. testaceipes and 17.0 and 16.3 days for A. colemani kept on A gossypii on cvs. YS and WR, respectively. The parasitoid L. testaceipes showed greater parasitism rate (68.4%) on A. gossypii on cv. YS than on WR (50%), and for A. colemani was not found significative difference on parasitism (46.8 and 35% to YS and WR, respectively). The emergence rates of L. testaceipes and A. colemani were 91.6% and 85.3% on A gossypii reared on YS, and 78.1% and 100% on WR, respectively. The longevity of A colemani and the parasitism rate of L. testaceipes were affected in a negative way by the cv. WR. The results indicated a positive interaction of biological control with parasitoids and the resistant cv. WR on A. gossypii control in protected cultivation.

Estudou-se a interação tritrófica: trigo, pulgão-verde Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) e seus inimigos naturais-chave Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) e Aphidius colemani Viereck, em plantas com ou sem adubação de silício. Os tratamentos consistiram em: 1) aplicação de silício via foliar; 2) aplicação de silício no solo e 3) testemunha (sem aplicação). As avaliações consistiram: a) teste de preferência do pulgão com chance de escolha em laboratório e b) aspectos biológicos das fases imaturas do predador C. externa, alimentado com pulgões criados em plantas dos diferentes tratamentos. Para a realização dos bioensaios com A. colemani foram realizados dois tratamentos: 1) aplicação de silício no solo e 2) testemunha (sem aplicação). As características biológicas avaliadas foram: duração da fase imatura, longevidade, razão sexual, ciclo total e porcentagem de parasitismo. Verificou-se que a aplicação de silício aumentou o grau de resistência das plantas de trigo diminuindo a preferência do pulgão-verde em relação à testemunha. Esse resultado pode estar relacionado à barreira mecânica proporcionada pela deposição de sílica na parede celular, o que dificultaria a penetração do estilete no tecido da planta, como também ao aumento na síntese de compostos de defesa da planta. Entretanto, não foi observado nenhum efeito indireto da aplicação de silício nas características biológicas tanto do predador como do parasitóide.

We studied the tritrophic interaction: wheat, greenbug Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) and its key natural enemies, Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) and Aphidius colemani Viereck, in plants with or without silicon fertilization. Treatments consisted of: 1) silicon application via the leaves; 2) silicon application in the soil 3) control (no application). The evaluations consisted of: a) free-choice aphid preference test in the laboratory, from the 35th day after plant emergence, and b) biological aspects of the immature stages of predator C. externa, feeding on aphids reared on plants from the different treatments. Two treatments were tried in the bioassays involving A. colemani: 1) silicon application in the soil, and 2) control (no application). The biological traits evaluated were: duration of the immature stage, longevity, sex ratio, total developmental time, and percentage parasitism. Silicon application increased the degree of resistance in wheat plants, decreasing greenbug preference in relation to the control. This result could be related to the mechanical barrier provided by silica deposition in the cell wall, which would make it difficult for the stylet to penetrate the plant tissue, as well as an increase in the synthesis of plant defense compounds. However, no indirect effect of silicon application was observed on the biological traits of either the predator or the parasitoid.

A temperatura está entre os fatores abióticos que influenciam o desenvolvimento e o comportamento dos insetos. A adaptabilidade às condições climáticas é um dos pontos chaves para o sucesso da multiplicação e estabelecimento de parasitóides em programas de controle biológico. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o desenvolvimento e o parasitismo de Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) em diferentes temperaturas, tendo como hospedeiro Aphis gossypii Glover. Os testes foram conduzidos em câmaras climáticas nas temperaturas de 15, 20, 25 e 30 ± 1°C, 60 ± 10% UR e fotofase de 10h. Cada ninfa hospedeira parasitada foi individualizada em placa de Petri (6 cm de diâmetro), contendo uma camada de agar-água e um disco foliar (2 cm de diâmetro) de crisântemo (Dendranthema grandiflorum Tzvelev) cultivar 'Yellow Snowdon'. O período de desenvolvimento de L. testaceipes foi de 26,9; 14,8; 11,3 e 12,2 dias nas temperaturas de 15, 20, 25 e 30ºC, respectivamente, e a porcentagem de emergência foi de 80, 61, 62 e 14% nas mesmas temperaturas. A taxa de parasitismo foi de 76, 68, 65 e 40% nas temperaturas de 15, 20, 25 e 30°C, respectivamente. A combinação do menor período de desenvolvimento e da porcentagem de parasitismo e de emergência maiores que 60%, encontrados a 25ºC, indicam que essa temperatura é a mais indicada para multiplicação e estabelecimento de L. testaceipes como agente de controle biológico de A. gossypii em ambientes protegidos.

The temperature is among the abiotic factors that directly affect the developmental time and behavior of insects. The adaptability to climatic conditions is a key point for the success of mass-rearing and establishment of parasitoids in biological control programs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the developmental time and parasitism of Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) on Aphis gossypii Glover as host in different temperatures. The tests were carried out in climatic chambers at 15, 20, 25 and 30 ± 1°C, 60 ± 10% RH and 10h photophase. Parasitized nymphs of A. gossypii were kept individualized in petri dishes (6 cm of diameter) on a leaf disk (2 cm diameter) of chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum Tzvelev) 'Yellow Snowdon' cultivar on a layer of agar. The developmental time of L. testaceipes was 26.9, 14.8, 11.3 and 12.2 days at 15, 20, 25 and 30ºC, respectively. Parasitism rates were 76, 68, 65 and 40% at 15, 20, 25 and 30°C, and emergence rates were 80, 61, 62 and 14% at these temperatures. The combination of a low developmental time (11.3 days) and parasitism and emergency higher than 60% occurred at 25ºC, indicating that this temperature could be the most adequate for reproduction and establishment of L. testaceipes as a biological control agent of A. gossypii in protected cultivation.

Specimens of the aphid parasitoid, Binodoxys brevicornis (Haliday, 1833), were reared from the mummies of Cavariella aegopodii (Scopoli, 1763) collected on Foeniculum vulgare (Apiaceae) at the Campus of the Universidade Federal de Lavras, in the city of Lavras, Minas Gerais State on September/2002. This is the first record of B. brevicornis in Brazil.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo determinar a adequabilidade de Aphis gossypii Glover e Myzus persicae (Sulzer) como hospedeiros de Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson). Cada espécie de hospedeiro foi oferecida separadamente ao parasitóide. Foram utilizados recipientes com uma folha de pimentão contendo 30 ninfas de afídeos de 2º e 3º ínstares. Uma fêmea de L. testaceipes foi liberada dentro do recipiente e retirada após 2h. Os pulgões foram transferidos para placas de Petri (5 cm), contendo solução de 1% agar/água e um disco foliar de pimentão ou algodão, para M. persicae e A. gossypii, respectivamente. As múmias foram transferidas para tubos de vidro (100 mm x 8 mm) para a avaliação da emergência e da longevidade do parasitóide. O parasitismo foi maior em A. gossypii (44,2%) do que em M. persicae (6,7%). Não houve diferença significativa na emergência (100% para M. persicae e 92,6% para A. gossypii) e no período de desenvolvimento de L. testaceipes nas duas espécies de hospedeiro (9,0 e 8,8 dias para M. persicae e A. gossypii, respectivamente). A longevidade de L. testaceipes foi maior quando se desenvolveu sobre o hospedeiro A. gossypii (5,5 dias) do que sobre M. persicae (3,9 dias). Ambas as espécies hospedeiras foram adequadas ao desenvolvimento do parasitóide, entretanto A. gossypii foi mais adequado do que M. persicae como hospedeiro para L. testaceipes.

This research aimed to evaluate the suitability of Aphis gossypii Glover and Myzus persicae (Sulzer) as hosts for Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson). The species of aphid were offered to the parasitoid separately. Small cages with a sweet pepper leaf and thirty 2nd- and 3rd-instar nymphs were used. One female of L. testaceipes was released into the cage and removed after 2h. The aphids were transferred to petri dishes (5 cm) containing a 1% solution of water/agar and a leaf disc of either sweet pepper or cotton for M. persicae and A. gossypii respectively. The mummies were transferred to glass tubes (100 mm x 8 mm) to evaluate adult emergence and longevity. Parasitism was higher in A. gossypii (44.2%) than in M. persicae (6.7%). There were no differences in adult emergence (100% in M. persicae and 92.6% in A. gossypii) and in development time of the parasitoid in the two host species (9.0 and 8.8 days for M. persicae and A. gossypii, respectively). Longevity of L. testaceipes was higher when developed in A. gossypii (5.5 days) than in M. persicae (3.9 days). Both aphid species were adequate for the development of the parasitoid, but A. gossypii was more suitable than M. persicae as a host for L. testaceipes.

Fecundity and longevity of Aphis gossypii Glover, 1877 (Hemiptera, Aphididae) at different temperatures and commercial chrysanthemum cultivars (Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev). The aphid A. gossypii is one of the main pests in a number of crops both under field and protected conditions. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the fecundity and longevity of A. gossypii under different temperatures and commercial chrysanthemum cultivars (Yellow Snowdon, White Reagan and Dark Splendid Reagan) with different trichomes densities (11.3; 16.6 and 21.6 trichome/mm² of the leaf, respectively) The trials were carried out in climatic chambers, at four temperatures (15, 20, 25 and 30 ±1 °C), 70 ± 10% RH and photophase 10h. The reproductive period significantly decreased with increase of temperature in the three cultivars. In Yellow Snowdon cultivar average duration of the reproductive period was 14.3 days at 25 °C. The maximum fecundity was obtained at the temperature of 25 ºC with 3,1; 2,8 and 3,6 nymphs/female/day in the Yellow Snowdon, White Reagan and Dark S. Reagan cultivars, respectively. The total fecundity was reduced by extreme temperatures (15 and 30 °C), and was obtained at 25 °C with 35,9 nymphs/female. Females maintained in Yellow Snowdon cultivar significantly showed superiority (30,7 nymphs/female) in total fecundity in relation to White Reagan (22,1 nymphs/female) and Dark S. Reagan (22,9 nymphs/female). The Yellow Snowdon cultivar (with a lower trichome density) had a significant influence in daily and total capacity of nymphs production, showing a higher fecundity of A. gossypii females. The aphid's longevity was affected by cultivars and temperature, and this longevity decreased whit increase of temperature. The results showed that there was an interaction between the temperature and host plant on reproductive parameters of A. gossypii.

O pulgão Aphis gossypii Glover está associado a culturas de grande importância econômica em cultivos protegidos, especialmente o crisântemo. Neste trabalho, avaliou-se o efeito de diferentes temperaturas e cultivares comerciais de crisântemo (Yellow Snowdon, White Reagan e Dark Spendid Reagan) sobre o desenvolvimento e a viabilidade de ninfas de A. gossypii. O experimento foi conduzido sob temperaturas constantes de 15, 20, 25 e 30°C, UR de 70±10% e fotofase de 10h. Ninfas de A. gossypii foram mantidas individualizadas em discos foliares (2 cm de diâmetro) das cultivares de crisântemo, em placas de Petri, contendo 10 ml de solução estéril de agar/água a 1%. O incremento da temperatura de 15°C para 30°C reduziu significativamente a duração dos ínstares, sendo o 1º ínstar o mais afetado. A sobrevivência das ninfas de 1º e 2º ínstar foi afetada pelas cultivares de crisântemo Yellow Snowdon, White Reagan e Dark Spendid Reagan as quais apresentaram diferentes densidades de tricomas/mm² na folha (11,3; 16,6 e 21,6 tricomas, respectivamente). Foi obtida maior sobrevivência para ninfas mantidas na Yellow Snowdon (88,5 e 96,6% para o 1º e o 2º instares, respectivamente). O período ninfal decresceu de 13,5 a 15°C para 5,0 dias a 30°C. A temperatura e as cultivares de crisântemo afetaram o tempo de desenvolvimento e a sobrevivência dos instares iniciais de A. gossypii, sendo isso um importante parâmetro para a adoção de táticas de manejo desse pulgão em condições de ambientes protegidos.

The aphid Aphis gossypii Glover is associated with several vegetable and ornamental greenhouse crops, especially chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev). The effect of different temperatures and chrysanthemum cultivars (Yellow Snowdon, White Reagan and Dark Splendid Reagan) on developmental time and survival of A gossypii were evaluated. The trials were carried out at environmental chambers, at constant temperatures: 15, 20, 25 and 30°C, 70±10% RH and photophase 10h. Nymphs of A. gossypii were kept individually on chrysanthemum leaf discs (2 cm diameter) of different cultivars in glass petri dishes, with 10ml of sterile solution of agar/water 1%. The increase of temperature from 15°C to 30°C, caused a significant reduction in the developmental time of the instars, and the first instar was the most affected. The survival of the nymphs of 1st and 2nd instars was affected by all chrysanthemum cultivars evaluated. These cultivars presented different densities of trichomes/mm² on the leaf (11.3, 16.6 and 21.6 trichomes, respectively), which provided higher survival to nymphs maintained on Yellow Snowdon cultivars (88.5 and 96.6% for the 1st and 2nd instars, respectively). The nymphal period decreased from 13.5 days at 15°C to 5.0 days at 30°C. Temperature and chrysanthemum cultivars affected the developmental time and the survival of the initial instars of A. gossypii, and this information is important for A. gossypii management in greenhouse crops.

A preferência de Aphidius colemani Viereck por ninfas de 2º e 3º ínstares de Myzus persicae (Sulzer) e Aphis gossypii Glover foi avaliada através de dois métodos. No primeiro, a preferência foi medida através da porcentagem de parasitismo, em teste sem chance de escolha, utilizando-se 20 ninfas de pulgão por tratamento. No segundo através de observações do comportamento de busca em testes sem e com chance de escolha, foram avaliados o número de encontros entre o parasitóide e os hospedeiros, o número de hospedeiros atacados pelo parasitóide, o número total de larvas do parasitóide encontradas nos hospedeiros e a porcentagem de hospedeiros com larva do parasitóide. As observações foram feitas utilizando-se microscópio estereoscópico e densidade de 16 pulgões acondicionados sobre disco foliar de pimentão (45 mm) em placa de Petri (50 mm). No teste sem chance de escolha, o parasitismo foi de 52 e 75% para M. persicae e A. gossypii, respectivamente. Não houve diferença na porcentagem de emergência (85.95% em A. gossypii e 80.99% em M. persicae), assim como no tempo da primeira visita e no número de encontros entre o parasitóide e as duas espécies de pulgões em testes sem e com chance de escolha. Pode-se concluir que A. colemani prefere A. gossypii quando comparado com M. persicae pelo maior número de ninfas de A. gossypii atacadas pelo parasitóide e pelo maior número de larvas do parasitóide encontradas nessa espécie de pulgão em ambos os testes. A correlação entre o número de oviposições por hospedeiro e o número de larvas do parasitóide encontradas nos hospedeiros foi positiva e significativa (R= 0,92 e P= 0,0001). Apenas uma larva do parasitóide foi encontrada viva por hospedeiro quando em superparasitismo e nenhum hospedeiro parasitado apresentava embriões em formação em seu interior.

The host preference of Aphidius colemani Viereck for 2nd and 3rd instar nymphs of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Aphis gossypii Glover was analyzed by two methods. Firstly, we measured the percentage of parasitized hosts in non-choice tests in a density of 20 aphids per sweet-pepper leaf. Secondly, the searching behavior in choice and non-choice tests was evaluated by determining the number of encountered hosts and attacked hosts, the total number of larvae encountered and the percentage of hosts with parasitoid larvae inside. The observations were made under a stereomicroscope in a sweet-pepper leaf disc (43 mm) with 16 aphids in a Petri dish (50 mm). In the non-choice test, parasitism was 52 and 75% for M. persicae and A gossypii, respectively. There was no difference in the percentage of emergence (86% in A. gossypii and 81% in M. persicae), as well as in the duration of the first visit and in the number of encounters between the parasitoid and the two species of aphids in choice and non-choice tests. That A. colemani prefers A. gossypii above M. persicae can be concluded from the higher number of attacked A. gossypii by the parasitoid and the higher number of parasitoid larvae found in this aphid in both tests. The correlation between the number of stings of the ovipositor per host and the number of parasitoid larvae found in the host was positive and significant (R = 0.92 and P = 0.0001). Concerning superparasitism, always only one larva of A. colemani was found alive in a host and none of the parasitized hosts presented embryo nymphs inside them.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo determinar a resposta funcional do parasitóide Aphidius colemani Viereck, através da determinação do número de múmias de Myzus persicae (Sulzer) formadas e da sua razão sexual, nas densidades de 20, 40, 60 e 80 ninfas sobre folhas de pimentão, à temperatura de 21±1ºC. Também foi avaliada sua resposta funcional através do número de ataques do parasitóide sobre os hospedeiros e pelo seu comportamento de busca, à temperatura de 23±1ºC, nas densidades de zero, quatro, oito, 16 e 32 M. persicae sobre discos foliares de pimentão (43mm) em placas de Petri (50 mm). A resposta funcional de A. colemani foi do tipo II, tanto para o número de múmias formadas (12,4; 22,7; 33,0 e 31,6), quanto para o número de ataques do parasitóide (0; 4,1; 6,8; 13,2 e 19,2), obtendo-se aumento gradativo do número de hospedeiros aceitos com o aumento da densidade do hospedeiro, até estabilizar-se. A razão sexual foi 0,57 em média, não sofrendo influência significativa da densidade do hospedeiro (P<0,05). O número de toques com a antena do parasitóide nos hospedeiros (encontros) aumentou gradativamente com o aumento da densidade do hospedeiro, sofrendo um aumento brusco na densidade mais alta (32 hospedeiros), indicando um aumento no comportamento de busca do parasitóide. O tempo da primeira visita de A. colemani não variou com a densidade. Quando os hospedeiros estavam presentes, foi de 1526,9 a 1638,0 segundos, porém, na ausência de hospedeiros, o parasitóide permaneceu no disco foliar por tempo menor (340,1 segundos).

This research aimed to determine the functional response of parasitoid Aphidius colemani Viereck, by determining the number of mummies of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) formed and its sexual ratio at densities of 20, 40, 60 and 80 2nd - and 3rd - instar nymphs on sweet-pepper leaves, at temperature of 21±1ºC. The functional response was also evaluated by calculating the number of attacks of the parasitoid on the host and its search behaviour on leaf discs of sweet-pepper leaves (43mm) in a Petri dish (50mm). The temperature of 23±1ºC and the densities of zero, four, eight, 16 and 32 nymphs of M. persicae were used. A. colemani's functional response was of type II, not only for number of mummies formed (12.4; 22.7; 33.0 and 31.6) but also for number of attacks (0; 4.1; 6.8; 13.2; and 19.2), with a gradual increase in the number of host density and reaching a plateau. The average sexual ratio was 0.57 and showed no significant influence in host density (P<0.05). The number of contacts made by parasitoid's antennae onto their hosts (encounters) increased gradually with higher host densities, with an abrupt increase in the highest density (32 hosts), indicating an increase in searching behaviour of the parasitoid. The time of the first visit of A. colemani has not varied with the host density. In the presence of hosts it lasted from 1526.9 to 1638.0 seconds; in the absence of host, the parasitoid stayed on the leaf disc for a short time (340.1 seconds).
