Abstract Meliponines are important pollinators of wild and cultivated plants in Latin America. In addition, these bees have the characteristics of a bioindicator, information necessary to develop conservation and sustainable management strategies for species of cultural, ecological, and economic importance. The objective of this work is to determine the species of meliponines that pollinate agroecosystems in Latin America and their use as bioindicators, which will serve as the basis for implementing strategies for the conservation and sustainable management of these bees. This research used sources of information related to the meliponines present in Latin America, crops they pollinate and the use of these stingless bees as bioindicators. Forty-six crops pollinated by meliponines in eight countries were recorded, where 17 genera and 54 species were recorded, with Brazil being the country with the highest record with 33 crops. Meliponines contribute directly to the pollination of agroecosystems, improving yield and quality, therefore it is important to establish strategies for conservation of these bees, such as maintaining flower patches that serve as food throughout the year. The protection of stingless bees is necessary because of the importance they have in the pollination service; however, it is also needed to conduct more research on their biology and their use in greenhouses, in addition to their usefulness as bioindicators.

Resumen Los meliponinos son importantes polinizadores de plantas silvestres y cultivadas en América Latina. Además, estas abejas tienen características de un bioindicador, información necesaria para desarrollar estrategias de conservación y manejo sostenible para las especies de importancia cultural, ecológica y económica. El objetivo de este trabajo es determinar las especies de meliponinos que polinizan los agroecosistemas en América Latina y su uso como bioindicadores, lo cual servirá para implementar estrategias en la conservación y manejo sostenible de estas abejas. En esta investigación se emplearon fuentes de información relacionados con los meliponinos presentes en América Latina, cultivos que polinizan y la utilización de estas abejas sin aguijón como bioindicadores. Se registraron 46 cultivos polinizados por meliponinos en ocho países, en donde se registraron 17 géneros y 54 especies, resultando Brasil donde se tiene mayor registro con 33 cultivos. Los meliponinos contribuyen directamente con la polinización de los agroecosistemas, mejorando el rendimiento y la calidad, por lo cual es importante establecer estrategias de conservación de estas abejas, tales como mantener parches florales que sirvan de alimento durante todo el año. Es necesaria la protección de las abejas sin aguijón por la importancia que tienen en el servicio de polinización; sin embargo, también es necesario realizar investigación sobre su biología y sobre su utilización en invernaderos, además de su utilidad como bioindicadores.

Abstract Individuals with malignancies and COVID-19 have a lower survival compared with the general population. However, the information about the impact of COVID-19 on the whole hematological population is scarce. We aimed to describe the 30th day overall survival (OS) after COVID-19 infection in pa tients with a hematological disease in Argentina. A completely anonymous survey from the Argentine Society of Hematology was delivered to all the hematologists in Argentina; it started in April 2020. A cut-off to analyze the data was performed in December 2020 and, finally, 419 patients were reported and suitable for the analysis (average age: 58 years, 90% with malignant diseases). After the COVID-19 diagnosis, the 30-day OS for the whole population was 80.2%. From the entire group (419), 101 (24.1%) individuals required intensive care unit admission, where the 30-day OS was 46.6%. Among allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients, the 30-day OS was 70.3%. Factors associated with a low OS were two or more comorbidities, an active hematological disease and history of chemotherapy. In individuals with the three factors, the 30-day OS was 49.6% while the 30-day OS in those without those factors was 100%. Patients with hematological diseases have a higher mortality than the general population. This group represents a challenge and requires careful decision-making of the treatment in order not to compromise the chances of cure.

Resumen El presente estudio tuvo por objetivo primario conocer la mortalidad de pacientes con enfermedad hematológica que presentaron infección por COVID-19 en Argentina. Para ello se difundió una encuesta desde la Sociedad Argentina de Hematología (SAH) entre los hematológos para informar sobre los pacientes con enfermedades hematológicas y diagnóstico de infección por SARS- CoV-2, entre el 19/4/2020, y el 7/12/2020. Se incluyeron individuos de todas las edades con diagnóstico de enfermedad hematológica benigna o maligna e infección por SARS-CoV-2 confirmada por técnica de RT-PCR. Se analizaron 419 pacientes (mediana 58 años; 90% enfermedades malignas). La supervivencia al día 30 fue de 80.2%. La supervivencia fue menor en aquellos que requirieron internación (74.2%), cuidados intensivos (46.6%) y asistencia respiratoria mecánica (36.8%). Entre los trasplantados alogénicos la supervivencia fue 70.3%. Los factores vinculados a la supervivencia global fueron las comorbilidades, el estado de la enfermedad al momento de la infección y el antecedente de quimioterapia. Se pudo establecer un score en el que aquellos que tuvieron un puntaje de 4 alcanzaron una supervivencia del 49.6% al día 30, mientras que la de los pacientes con score 0 fue del 100% a 30 días. En comparación con la población general, los pacientes con enfermedades hematológicas presentan una mayor mortalidad vinculada al COVID-19, motivo por el cual es primordial definir pautas destinadas a disminuir la exposición de los mismos sin comprometer las posibilidades de beneficiarse del tratamiento de la enfermedad de base.

Abstract Background and Aims: Within the polygonal of the Cañón del Río Blanco National Park (PNCRB), very few floristic studies have been carried out, hence, the aim of this research is to contribute to the floristic knowledge of the disturbed tropical montane cloud forest and its ecotones with tropical rain forest and oak forest, located in the Altas Montañas region in Veracruz, Mexico. Methods: The collection of botanical specimens was realized during two periods, the first one from 2012 to 2014 and the second one in 2016, supplementing the list by consulting the collections deposited in the CORU herbarium “Dr. Jerzy Rzedowski Rotter” of the Biological and Agropecuarian Sciences Faculty of the University of Veracruz, those mentioned in the Flora of Veracruz fascicles, and records from the National Herbarium of Mexico MEXU, checked on the Open Data Webpage of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Key results: 1742 records were obtained, including 136 botanical families, 414 genera and 663 species. The most represented botanical families were Orchidaceae, Asteraceae, Bromeliaceae, Fabaceae, Solanaceae, and Malvaceae. Conclusions: Although this area has a high anthropogenic disturbance, the fragments of the cloud forest and its ecotones in the PNCRB have a great richness of vascular plant species, showing the highest value ever reported in Veracruz state. The floristic list here presented will help to make decisions for conservation of natural resources and/or restoration of the study area.

Resumen Antecedentes y Objetivos: Dentro de la poligonal del Parque Nacional Cañón del Río Blanco (PNCRB), se han llevado a cabo escasos estudios florísticos, por lo que el objetivo del presente trabajo es contribuir al conocimiento florístico del bosque mesófilo de montaña (BMM) perturbado y sus ecotonos con la selva mediana subperennifolia y el bosque de Quercus, ubicado en la región de las Altas Montañas del estado de Veracruz, México. Métodos: Se realizaron colectas de material botánico en dos períodos, el primero entre 2012-2014 y el segundo en 2016; se complementó el listado consultando las colectas depositadas en el herbario CORU “Dr. Jerzy Rzedowski Rotter” de la Facultad de Ciencias Biológicas y Agropecuarias de la Universidad Veracruzana, así como las mencionadas en los fascículos de la Flora de Veracruz para el área de estudio y lo reportado en el Herbario Nacional de México MEXU, en el Portal de Datos Abiertos de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Resultados clave: Se obtuvieron 1742 registros, en donde se incluyen 136 familias botánicas, 414 géneros y 663 especies. Las familias con mayor riqueza fueron Orchidaceae, Asteraceae, Bromeliaceae, Fabaceae, Solanaceae y Malvaceae. Conclusiones: Aunque es una zona con alta perturbación antropogénica, los fragmentos del BMM en el PNCRB y sus ecotonos presentan una gran riqueza de plantas vasculares, teniendo uno de los valores más altos que se han reportado en el estado de Veracruz. La lista florística que aquí se presenta ayudará para tomar decisiones de conservación sobre los recursos naturales y/o restauración del área de estudio.

Abstract Background and Aims: The Bromeliaceae family in Mexico is made up of 422 species, of which 96(22.7%) are found in Veracruz. Ten of these species are endemic to the state. The objective of this study was to identify and report the bromeliad species that had not been recorded in the entity. Methods: Botanical expeditions were carried out in different regions of the state of Veracruz as part of the research of two doctoral theses. Additionally, collections of Bromeliaceae in the herbaria CORU and XAL were revised. Key results: We documented new state records for Veracruz of two species of the genus Tillandsia (T. bourgaei y T. roseoscapa) and one species of Pitcairnia (P. xanthocalyx). Another species (Tillandsia prodigiosa) represents a rediscovery for the state´s flora. Finally, information regarding distribution and habitat, as well as photographs of each species, are presented. Conclusions: The results obtained, together with other new previously reported records, confirm that the central zone of Veracruz state, especially the Córdoba-Orizaba-Zongolica zone, had remained, until recently, poorly studied from the floristic point of view, highlighting the importance of xerophytic vegetation present in the area, where species occur that are shared with the flora of Tehuacán-Cuicatlán valley. The same applies to the northern portion of the state, in the Totonacapan region, which has received little attention from Mexican botanists.

Resumen Antecedentes y Objetivos: La familia Bromeliaceae en México está integrada por 422 especies, de las cuales en Veracruz se encuentran 96(22.7%); diez de ellas son endémicas al estado. El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar y reportar las especies de bromeliáceas que no se habían registrado previamente para la entidad. Métodos: Se realizaron exploraciones botánicas en diferentes regiones del estado de Veracruz como parte de la investigación de dos tesis doctorales. Adicionalmente se revisaron las colecciones de Bromeliaceae en los herbarios CORU y XAL. Resultados clave: Se documentan nuevos registros para el estado de Veracruz de dos especies del género Tillandsia (T. bourgaei y T. roseoscapa) y de una especie del género Pitcairnia (P. xanthocalyx). Una especie más (Tillandsia prodigiosa) representa un redescubrimiento para la flora estatal. Finalmente, se presenta información sobre la distribución y el hábitat, así como fotografías de cada una las especies. Conclusiones: Los resultados obtenidos, en conjunto con otros nuevos registros reportados previamente, confirman que la zona centro del estado de Veracruz, especialmente la zona Córdoba-Orizaba-Zongolica había permanecido, hasta hace poco, pobremente estudiada desde el punto de vista florístico. Resalta la importancia de la vegetación xerófila presente en el área, en la cual habitan especies que se comparten con la flora del Valle de Tehuacán-Cuicatlán. Lo mismo aplica para la porción norte del estado, en la región del Totonacapan, la cual también ha recibido escasa atención de los botánicos mexicanos.

Abstract: Background and Aims: In the central area of the state of Veracruz there is a semi-arid region, located mainly in the municipalities Acultzingo and Maltrata, within the Cañón del Río Blanco National Park. This region had remained unexplored from the botanical point of view and had therefore not been recorded by botanical literature. The aim of this research is to contribute to the knowledge of flora and vegetation of this region, through a floristic analisis and a description of its plant communities. Methods: Periodic collections of plants from August 2012 to July 2014 were undertaken. Additionally, the CORU and MEXU herbaria were reviewed, as well as the Flora of Veracruz series, to obtain historical records in the study area. In order to determine the taxa shared between this semiarid region and the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley, a presence-absence matrix and a table summarizing the shared taxa were elaborated. Key results: Six hundred and four voucher specimens were collected, 45 records from CORU, 280 from MEXU and 80 from the review of the Flora of Veracruz series were obtained, resulting in a total of 1009 records. These data corresponded to 87 families, 247 genera and 390 taxa. The best-represented families are Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Apocynaceae, Cactaceae, Asparagaceae, Boraginaceae, Bromeliaceae, Orchidaceae and Verbenaceae. Thirty-three species were considered as new records for the state of Veracruz and 43 have a threat status in terms of national and international laws. Three different vegetal associations conforming the xerophytic scrub are extensively described. Conclusions: There are 63 species shared between the study area and the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán valley, thereby confirming the floristic relationships between these two large semi-arid regions; hence, we propose the name “Acultzingo-Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley”, covering the states of Veracruz, Puebla and Oaxaca.

Resumen: Antecedentes y Objetivos: En la porción central del estado de Veracruz existe una región semiárida, en los municipios Acultzingo y Maltrata, que forma parte del Parque Nacional Cañón del Río Blanco. Esa zona había permanecido inexplorada desde el punto de vista botánico, por lo que no estaba registrada en la literatura contemporánea. El objetivo de esta investigación es contribuir al conocimiento de la flora y vegetación de esta región, a través de un análisis florístico y una descripción de las comunidades vegetales. Métodos: Se realizaron colectas periódicas de la flora entre agosto 2012 y julio 2014. Se revisaron los herbarios CORU y MEXU, así como la serie Flora de Veracruz para obtener los registros históricos en el área de estudio. Para determinar los taxones compartidos entre esta región semiárida y el Valle de Tehuacán-Cuicatlán, se realizó una matriz de presencia-ausencia y se elaboró un cuadro que los resume. Resultados clave: En total se colectaron 604 especímenes de herbario, se obtuvieron 45 registros de la revisión de CORU, 280 de MEXU y 80 de la revisión de la serie Flora de Veracruz, para un total de 1009 registros. Estos registros comprenden 87 familias, 248 géneros y 390 taxones; las familias mejor representadas son Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Apocynaceae, Cactaceae, Asparagaceae, Boraginaceae, Bromeliaceae, Orchidaceae y Verbenaceae. Se reportan 33 especies como nuevos registros para Veracruz y 43 especies incluidas en categorías de riesgo según normas nacionales e internacionales. Se describen tres asociaciones vegetales que integran al matorral xerófilo de esta área. Conclusiones: Existen 63 especies compartidas entre la región semiárida de Acultzingo-Maltrata y el Valle de Tehuacán-Cuicatlán, confirmándose así las relaciones florísticas entre estas dos grandes regiones, por lo que se propone se denomine “Valle de Acultzingo-Tehuacán-Cuicatlán”, abarcando los estados de Veracruz, Puebla y Oaxaca.

Abstract: Background and Aims: With only a few explorations since the 19th century and isolated plant vouchers, the Cañón del Río Blanco National Park has been little explored from the floristic point of view; however, new records for the flora of the state of Veracruz, Mexico, have been documented in the polygonal covered by this Natural Protected Area. The aim of this study is to present the novelties that this site contributes to this flora. Methods: Botanical expeditions were carried out in two different periods: the first between 2012 and 2014 and the second in 2016. Specimens were collected and photographed, and taxonomic determination with specialized literature was executed. Finally, the specimens were deposited in the Mexican herbaria CORU, MEXU and XAL. Key results: Manfreda verhoekiae (Asparagaceae), Cypripedium molle (Orchidaceae), Goodyera brachyceras (Orchidaceae), Krameria pauciflora (Krameriaceae) and Crusea psyllioides (Rubiaceae) are reported as new records for the flora of Veracruz, whereas Dioscorea orizabensis (Dioscoreaceae) and Nectouxia formosa (Solanaceae) are rediscoveries for the same flora. Conclusions: The theory regarding floristic affinity of vegetation of this semiarid region of Veracruz with the flora of the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley is reinforced. It is suggested to continue botanical explorations within this Natural Protected Area.

Resumen: Antecedentes y Objetivos: Con algunas pocas exploraciones desde el siglo XIX y colectas aisladas, el Parque Nacional Cañón del Río Blanco ha sido poco estudiado desde el punto de vista florístico; sin embargo, se han documentado nuevos registros para la flora del estado de Veracruz, México, en la poligonal abarcada por esta Área Natural Protegida. El objetivo de este estudio fue dar a conocer las novedades que este sitio aporta para dicha flora. Métodos: Se llevaron a cabo exploraciones botánicas en dos periodos diferentes: el primero entre 2012 y 2014 y el segundo en 2016. Se hicieron colectas botánicas y los especímenes fueron fotografiados en su hábitat para posteriormente ser determinados taxonómicamente con ayuda de literatura especializada. Finalmente, los especímenes fueron depositados en los herbarios nacionales CORU, MEXU y XAL. Resultados clave: Se reporta Manfreda verhoekiae (Asparagaceae), Cypripedium molle (Orchidaceae), Goodyera brachyceras (Orchidaceae), Krameria pauciflora (Krameriaceae) y Crusea psyllioides (Rubiaceae) como nuevos registros para la flora de Veracruz, mientras que Dioscorea orizabensis (Dioscoreaceae) y Nectouxia formosa (Solanaceae) se presentan como redescubrimientos para la misma flora. Conclusiones: Se refuerza la teoría sobre la afinidad florística de la vegetación de esta región semiárida veracruzana con la flora del Valle de Tehuacán-Cuicatlán. Se sugiere continuar con la exploración botánica dentro de esta Área Natural Protegida.

We report 17 new records of angiosperms belonging to 11 families and 13 genera for Acultzingo and Maltrata municipalities in the state of Veracruz, in addition to two more species representing rediscoveries for the state. Furthermore, data on species habitat, distribution, and endemism are also provided. We confirm the inclusion of this area as part of the Tehuacan-Cuicatlan Floristic Province.

Se presentan 17 nuevos registros pertenecientes a 11 familias y 13 géneros de angiospermas para los municipios de Acultzingo y Maltrata, en el estado de Veracruz, además de dos especies que son redescubiertas para la entidad. Se aportan datos sobre el hábitat, distribución y endemismo de las especies y se confirma que esta zona forma parte de la provincia florística de Tehuacán-Cuicatlán.

The House Wren (Troglodytes aedon) is distributed throughout the American Continent consisting of five subspecies groups; one of them is the musculus group that distributes in Mexico from southeastern Veracruz and northeastern Oaxaca to the Yucatan Peninsula, through the Gulf of Mexico. We report observations of this subspecies group in 10 municipalities of Veracruz from 2008 to 2014. These data increase the known distribution of this group in Mexico to date. According to plumage traits, distribution and body measurements, the specimens belong to the subspecies T. a. intermedius. We also report breeding activity in four of the localities suggesting these populations are resident. Most of the observation sites show evidence of human disturbance mainly by agricultural activities, suggesting that populations have increased due to human activities which provide suitable habitat for the species.

El chivirín saltapared (Troglodytes aedon) se distribuye en todo el Continente Americano y se clasifica dentro de cinco grupos de subespecies, uno de ellos es el grupo musculus, cuya distribución en México ha sido descrita desde el sureste de Veracruz y noreste de Oaxaca, a través del Golfo de México, hasta la Península de Yucatán. En esta investigación presentamos datos de observaciones que abarcan diez municipios de la región de las Altas Montañas del Estado de Veracruz y cubren el periodo de 2008 a 2014, aumentando con ello la distribución conocida de este grupo de subespecies en México. De acuerdo con sus características de plumaje y distribución, las aves que registramos pertenecen a la subespecie T. aedon intermedius. Las poblaciones de esta subespecie son residentes reproductivas en la región, ya que pudimos constatar su reproducción en cuatro de las localidades que monitoreamos. Observamos perturbación humana en los sitios de avistamientos, principalmente por actividades agrícolas, por lo que consideramos que la población y distribución de esta especie han aumentado al haberse asociado con sitios con estas características.

The indirect immunoperoxidase method was evaluated in 265 biopsies with the purpose of increasing the sensitivity of the diagnostic histopathology of tegumentary lesions caused by subspecies of the Leishmania braziliensis complex. A diagnosis of leishmaniasis was established by parasitological methods (181) or clinical criteria (12) in 193 patients (72.8%). In the latter group of confirmed cases standard histochemstry and immunoperoxidase were compared with direct examination of tissue scraping and culture of lesion aspirates. The detection and localization of amastigotes was more efficient using the immunoperoxidase method (61.3%) than conventional histopathology with hematoxilin and eosin (34.6%) or direct examination of tissue scraping (43.9%). Howerver, culture of lesion aspirates was the most sensitive procedure (89.8%). The efficiency of the immunoperoxidase method was greater in recent lesions, being positive in 75% of cases with less than 3 months evolution, while 55.6%, 37.5% and 21.1% of cases with lesion evolution of 3-5.9, 6-11, and 12 months or greater, respectively, were positive. The combined use of the direct examination of lesion scraping and immunoperoxidase applied to histological sections of the biopsy from the lesion border allowed an etiologic diagnosis of 72% of confirmed cases. Cross-reactivity was observed with Paracoccidioides braziliensis but not with Mycobacterium leprae, Sporothrix schenckii, or Histoplasma capsulatum.

Con el objeto de aumentar la sensibilidad del diagnóstico histopatológico de lesiones cutáneas y mucocutáneas causada por subespecies del complejo Leismania braziliensis y para lograr una mejor visualización de los parásitos en las lesiones, se evaluó el método de la inmunoperoxidas indirecta para localizar en forma rápida y específica los amastigotas en biopsia de tejido afectado. Los cortes de tejido se fijaron en formol y se incluyeron en parafina; después se evaluaron por inmunohistoquímica usando un antisuero policlonal producido en conejo, como reactivo primario, Se examinaron 265 biopsias de pacientes con lesiones sospechosas de leishmaniasis de la costa Pacífica y región suroriental colombiana. a 1983 (72.8%) pacientes se les estableció el diagnóstico por métodos clínicos y/o poarasitológicos. Los resultados obtenidos por la inmunoperoxidasa en el grupo de pacientes a los cuales se les confirmó la leishmaniasis se compararn con la histopatología convencional, el examen directo de frotis y el aislamiento del parásito por cultivo del aspirado de la lesión. La localización inmunoenzimática de las amastigotas fue más efectivas (61.3%) que la histopatología com hematoxilina y eosina (34.6%), y que el frotis (43,9%). En cambio, el cultivo de aspirado fue más sensible (89.8%). La eficiencia del método de inmunoperoxidasa fue mayor en las lesiones recientes (72.5%) positivos en los casos con menos de tres meses de evolución) que en las lesiones más antiguas (55.6, 37.5 y 21.1% para 3-5.9, 6-11 meses y mayores o iguales a 12 mese, respectivamente). La combinación de frotis e inmunoperoxidasa incrementó el porcentaje de caso diagnosticados a 72.0%, lo que indica la importancia de combinar métodos para obtener una mayor eficiencia de diagnóstico. La especificidad fue de 100% en controles sanos y 92.9% en pacientes con lesiones causadas por agentes etiológicos distintos a leishmania.
