Abstract Background: The bioactive peptides derived from snake venoms of the Viperidae family species have been promising as therapeutic candidates for neuroprotection due to their ability to prevent neuronal cell loss, injury, and death. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the cytoprotective effects of a synthetic proline-rich oligopeptide 7a (PRO-7a; <EDGPIPP) from Bothrops jararaca snake, on oxidative stress-induced toxicity in neuronal PC12 cells and astrocyte-like C6 cells. Methods: Both cells were pre-treated for four hours with different concentrations of PRO-7a, submitted to H2O2-induced damage for 20 h, and then the oxidative stress markers were analyzed. Also, two independent neuroprotective mechanisms were investigated: a) L-arginine metabolite generation via argininosuccinate synthetase (AsS) activity regulation to produce agmatine or polyamines with neuroprotective properties; b) M1 mAChR receptor subtype activation pathway to reduce oxidative stress and neuron injury. Results: PRO-7a was not cytoprotective in C6 cells, but potentiated the H2O2-induced damage to cell integrity at a concentration lower than 0.38 μM. However, PRO-7a at 1.56 µM, on the other hand, modified H2O2-induced toxicity in PC12 cells by restoring cell integrity, mitochondrial metabolism, ROS generation, and arginase indirect activity. The α-Methyl-DL-aspartic acid (MDLA) and L-NΩ-Nitroarginine methyl ester (L-Name), specific inhibitors of AsS and nitric oxide synthase (NOS), which catalyzes the synthesis of polyamines and NO from L-arginine, did not suppress PRO-7a-mediated cytoprotection against oxidative stress. It suggested that its mechanism is independent of the production of L-arginine metabolites with neuroprotective properties by increased AsS activity. On the other hand, the neuroprotective effect of PRO-7a was blocked in the presence of dicyclomine hydrochloride (DCH), an M1 mAChR antagonist. Conclusions: For the first time, this work provides evidence that PRO-7a-induced neuroprotection seems to be mediated through M1 mAChR activation in PC12 cells, which reduces oxidative stress independently of AsS activity and L-arginine bioavailability. Resumo Discute-se neste artigo o papel desempenhado pela Gaceta Médica de México no processo de institucionalização e profissionalização da medicina científica no país entre 1860 e 1890. A partir da noção de tecnologia literária utilizada por Steven Shapin e Simon Schaffer e da análise qualitativa de relatórios médicos com enunciados típicos, examina-se o modo como os membros da Academia Nacional de Medicina, instituição responsável pelo periódico, e da Escola Nacional de Medicina coletivizaram suas experiências e prescreveram formas de ser e agir por meio de suas publicações. Busca-se demonstrar o caráter de “manual não sistematizado” da publicação, importante instrumento de normatização e regulação dos saberes médicos no México nesse período.

Abstract This article discusses the role played by the Gaceta Médica de México in the process of institutionalizing and professionalizing scientific medicine in Mexico from 1860 to 1890. From the notion of literary technology utilized by Steven Shapin and Simon Schaffer and qualitative analysis of medical reports containing typical discourse, we examine how members of the Mexican National Academy of Medicine (the institution responsible for this journal) and the National School of Medicine collected their experiences and prescribed ways of being and acting through their publications. The aim is to demonstrate how this periodical acted as an unsystematized manual, an important instrument for normalizing and regulating medical knowledge in Mexico during this period.

RESUMO A couve (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) é geralmente produzida por agricultores urbanos no Brasil, mas existem poucos estudos sobre a diversidade e manejo das doenças para produção sustentável em cultivos urbanos. Neste estudo, foi verificada a ocorrência de doenças na couve em cultivos urbanos de duas regiões do Brasil, representando as condições climáticas de Cwa (Lavras MG) e Aw (Campina Grande PB) pela classificação de Köppen Geiger e os fatores que contribuem para a ocorrência das enfermidades. Os produtores foram visitados semanalmente em cada região por oito meses e foi realizado o levantamento das doenças, bem como as principais táticas de manejo aplicadas pelos agricultores de cada município. Em ambas as regiões, o oídio (Erysiphe polygoni) e a podridão negra (Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris) foram as doenças predominantes. A umidade relativa e alta temperatura foram os fatores ambientais que contribuíram para o aumento das doenças. O manejo com cobertura vegetal contribuiu para diminuir o oídio e para manter a podridão negra. Consequentemente, o cultivo intensivo de couve proporcionou um aumento da severidade da podridão negra. Esses resultados mostram a importância de recomendações adequadas de táticas de manejo utilizadas na agricultura urbana visando o controle de doenças da couve de acordo com as condições climáticas da área.

ABSTRACT Kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) is mostly produced by urban growers in Brazil, but little is known about the diversity and the management of diseases for sustainable urban agriculture. The present study investigated the occurrence of diseases in the urban cultivation of kale in two regions of Brazil, representing the climate conditions Cwa (Lavras - MG) and Aw (Campina Grande - PB) according to Köppen Geiger classification, as well as the factors that contribute to such occurrence. Growers in each region were visited every week during eight months while a survey was carried out on the diseases and the major crop management practices. In both regions, powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni) and black rot (Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris) were the prevalent diseases. Relative humidity and high temperature were the environmental factors that contributed to increase the diseases. Management using straw mulch favored powdery mildew reduction and black rot maintenance. Consequently, kale intensive production resulted in higher black rot severity. These results demonstrated the importance of proper recommendations on management practices for urban agriculture with the aim of controlling kale diseases according to the climate conditions in the region.

Resumo Este artigo investiga relações entre a incidência de câncer de colo de útero (ICC) e os componentes e indicadores de qualidade da água nos municípios do Mato Grosso do Sul, entre 2014 e 2017, por correlação estatística (Determinante de Pearson) e espacial (agrupamentos por k-médias). Houve maior resposta estatística de ICC em relação à tarifa média dos serviços de abastecimento praticado (-36,28%) e de água (-34,15%); à quantidade de suas interrupções sistemáticas (28,3%) e paralizações (22,28%); ao consumo médio per capita de água (20,74%) e à quantidade de serviços executados (-17,98%), todas as respostas sob p-valor ≤ 0,001. Em Costa Rica, cidade sob maior ICC média, os agrupamentos espaciais identificaram maior efeito daquelas interrupções (z-valor = 8,741) e das paralizações (z = 7,6097); enquanto em Rochedo, também sob alta ICC, houve maior efeito à incidência de análises com resultados fora do padrão para coliformes totais (z = 8,6803) e turbidez (z = 5,7427), sob correlação estatística de 12,05% (p-valor = 0,032) e 15,18% (p-valor = 0,007), respectivamente. Dados do SISAGUA revelaram a presença de coliformes e de altos níveis de turbidez, por exemplo, em Antônio João e Tacuru, cidades sob altas ICC médias. Recomenda-se maiores investigações sobre as relações aqui apresentadas entre ICC e água.

We recommend further investigation into the relationships presented here between CCI and water.

Resumo O objetivo desta revisão é discutir o planejamento digital e o uso da tecnologia guiada em Endodontia. A complexidade e variabilidade da anatomia dos canais radiculares, em conjunto com o desafio no processo de sanificação e controle de micro-organismos representam fatores de risco ao fracasso após o tratamento dos canais radiculares infectados. O aprimoramento técnico-científico e os avanços tecnológicos tem possibilitado uma melhor previsibilidade de resultados nos procedimentos terapêuticos. O desenvolvimento de ferramentas de trabalho eficientes e modernas proporcionou tratamentos endodônticos seguros, com menor tempo clínico operacional e maior conforto ao paciente. A endodontia digital incorporou diferentes ferramentas e desenvolveu suas próprias, avançando ainda mais na resolução de casos complexos. A cópia fiel da anatomia interna proporcionada pelo avanço dos aparelhos e softwares de TCFC, associada aos recursos digitais de planejamento e impressão 3D possibilitaram o surgimento da endodontia guiada. Esta técnica é utilizada em diferentes etapas do tratamento endodôntico, com indicações específicas e maior previsibilidade de resultados. Este estudo revisou criticamente o potencial de aplicação clínica da técnica de acesso guiado, e os passos operatórios para sua realização de forma segura no manejo de casos endodônticos complexos. As principais indicações da Endodontia Guiada incluem o acesso a canais radiculares calcificados; as cirurgias parendodônticas em áreas de difícil acesso; a remoção de pinos de fibra de vidro; e o acesso a dentes com anomalias de desenvolvimento. Em síntese, a endodontia guiada é uma técnica precisa, eficaz e de fácil aplicação clínica. Esta técnica representa a incorporação dos recursos tecnológicos e planejamentos digitais do Endodontista, dando maior previsibilidade aos casos em que é aplicada na prática clínica.

Abstract The aim of this review is to discuss the digital planning and the use of guided technology in Endodontics. The complexity of the root canals anatomy and the challenges in the microorganism’s control represent risk factors for failure after the infected root canal’s treatment. Scientific improvements associated with technological advances have enabled better predictability of therapeutic procedures results. The development of efficient and modern devices provided safer root canal treatments, with shorter clinical visits and greater patient comfort. Digital endodontics incorporated different tools and developed its own, advancing even further in resolving complex cases. The faithful copy of the internal anatomy provided by the advancement of CBCT devices and software’s, associated with the digital resources of 3D planning and printing, enabled the advent of guided endodontics. This technique is used at different stages of endodontic treatment, with specific indications and greater result predictability. Therefore, this study critically reviewed the potential clinical application of this guided access technique, and the operative steps for its safe performance in managing complex endodontic cases. The main indications are accessing calcified root canals, performing endodontic surgeries in difficult access areas, removing fiberglass posts, and accessing teeth with developmental anomalies. In summary, guided endodontics has been a precise strategy, effective, safe, and clinically applicable. This procedure represents incorporating technological resources and digital planning in the Endodontist clinical practice, increasing predictability to complex cases.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: A surgery is essential for the management of early endometrial carcinoma. Due to the comorbidities associated with the disease, the complications of surgery are common. Laparoscopic surgery may reduce surgical complications but also have oncological risks. We aimed to compare recurrence and overall survival (OS) associated with laparoscopy and laparotomy for early endometrial cancer. METHODS: We included women treated for presumed early endometrial carcinoma at the Clinics Hospital of Ribeirão Preto Medical School from January 1998 to December 2017. We designed a 1:2 propensity score-matched case-control and compared the patients’ characteristics, short-term outcomes, recurrence, and OS. RESULTS: A total of 252 women were included in this study, 168 underwent laparotomy, and 84 underwent laparoscopy. The two groups were well balanced according to most of the variables, and obesity was a characteristic of patients in both groups. Laparoscopy was associated with increased surgical time (194.7 min vesus 165.6 min; p<0.001) and reduced rate of surgical complications (6.5% versus 0; p=0.038). Laparoscopic surgery was not associated with the risk of tumor recurrence (HR: 0.41, 95%CI 0.14-1.19, p=0.100) or all-cause mortality (HR: 0.49, 95%CI 0.18-1.35, p=0.170). CONCLUSION: Laparoscopy was safe in terms of oncological outcomes and was associated with a lower rate of surgical complications. Our data support the use of minimally invasive surgery as the preferential approach in the management of early endometrial carcinoma.

Nesse artigo, utilizou-se o Módulo Python Uncertainties no desenvolvimento dos códigos para efetuar os cálculos de incertezas experimentais, tanto para a diferença de potencial, quanto para as correntes elétricas. Para esse fim, foi desenvolvido um protótipo experimental que demonstra o efeito fotovoltaico a partir da utilização de materiais de baixo custo e, por conseguinte, com o objetivo de observar e quantificar as referidas grandezas físicas envolvidas. Além disso, foi realizada uma análise qualitativa e quantitativa do efeito fotovoltaico, assim como da Primeira Lei de Ohm. Nessa perspectiva, o protótipo foi associado a um multímetro, que permitiu a aferição direta da diferença de potencial, cujo o valor principal foi de (0,4582 ± 0,0004) V, quando incidido um feixe laser em um fotodiodo presente em um transistor 2N3055, mas também os valores das correntes elétricas, sendo os valores principais de (81,7100 ± 0,1118) μA e (1,9990 ± 0,0320) μA, quando se utilizou dos resistores ôhmicos de 1,0 kΩ e 220,0 kΩ, respectivamente. Por fim, é importante salientar que essa proposta de artigo objetiva a anexação da computação física no cotidiano escolar, assim como promover o despertar científico na confecção de instrumentações específicas para o ensino-aprendizagem de física.

In this article, the Python Uncertainties Module was used in the development of the codes to perform the calculations of experimental uncertainties, both for the potential difference and for the electric currents. For this purpose, an experimental prototype was developed that demonstrates the photovoltaic effect from the use of low-cost materials and, therefore, with the objective of observing and quantifying the referred physical quantities involved. In addition, a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the photovoltaic effect was carried out, as well as of Ohm’s First Law. In this perspective, the prototype was associated with a multimeter, that allowed direct measurement of the potential difference, whose main value was (0,4558 ± 0,0004) V, when a laser beam was focused on a photodiode present in a 2N3055 transistor, but also the values of the electric currents, the main values being (81,7100 ± 0,1118) μA and (1,9990 ± 0,0320) μA, when the ohmic resistors of 1,0 kΩ and 220,0 kΩ were used, respectively. Finally, it is important to note that this article proposal aims at the annexation of physical computing in school routine, as well as promoting scientific awakening in the manufacture of specific instruments for teaching and learning physics.

RESUMO: A geração de efluentes nos abatedouros de aves aumentou consideravelmente nos últimos anos devido à crescente demanda por carne de frango. Esse fato, combinado com a atual necessidade de desenvolvimento de novas formas de energia renovável a partir da biomassa e a falta de instalações de descarte para isso, motivou este estudo. O objetivo foi determinar a viabilidade técnica da produção de carvão para churrasco, usando briquetes produzidos com diferentes misturas contendo lodo de abatedouro de aves e maravalha de Pinus spp. Para determinar a viabilidade técnica, misturou-se os dois resíduos adicionando gradualmente 10-90 % de lodo nas misturas, o que resultou em nove tratamentos contendo lodo e um contendo apenas maravalha. Depois disso, quatro briquetes de cada tratamento foram produzidos e carbonizados. Após a carbonização, os carvões foram submetidos às análises de teor de umidade (MC), densidade a granel (BD), resistência à compressão (CS), poder calorífico superior (GCV) e análise imediata (PA). O Rendimento Gravimétrico (GY) e a Densidade Energética (DE) de cada tratamento foram calculados usando os resultados das outras análises. A resistência à compressão (CR), o poder calorífico superior (GCV), o teor de voláteis (VM) e o teor de carbono fixo (FC) do carvão diminuiu com o aumento da proporção de lodo nas misturas. A densidade aparente (BD), o teor de cinzas (AC) e a densidade energética (ED) aumentaram com o acréscimo de lodo na mistura. A melhor mistura para a produção de carvão de briquetes para uso doméstico foi a que teve 90 % de lodo e 10 % de partículas de Pinus.

ABSTRACT: The generation of wastes in poultry abattoirs has increased considerably in recent years due to the growing demand for chicken meat. This fact, combined with the current need for developing new forms of renewable energy from biomass, and the lack of disposal facilities, motivated this study. We determined the technical feasibility of the barbecue charcoal production using briquettes produced with different blends containing sludge from a poultry abattoir and Pinus spp. shavings. To that end, we have mixed both residues by gradually adding 10 to 90 % of sludge in the blends, which resulted in 9 treatments containing sludge, and 1 containing only shavings. After that, we produced four briquettes of each treatment and charred them by using a heating ramp. After charring, we submitted the charcoal to the analyzes of Moisture Content (MC), Bulk Density (BD), Compressive Resistance (CR), Gross Calorific Value (GCV), and Proximate Analysis (PA). We calculated the Gravimetric Yield (GY) and the Energy Density (ED) by using the results from the other analyzes. Results showed that the CR, the GCV, the Volatile Matter (VM), and the Fixed Carbon Content (FC) of the charcoals decreased by increasing the proportion of sludge in the blends. However, the charcoals’ bulk density (BD) increased, which also increased its energy density (ED) and ash content (AC). The best blend to produce charcoal for household use was the one containing 90 % of sludge and 10 % of Pinus spp. shavings.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento e o teor de óleo essencial após transplantio e corte de acessos de Lippia rotundifolia provenientes de população natural do estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Avaliaram-se oito acessos (PVP, GIG, RPE, ODA, JFE, PRP, SGS e RTI), em seis períodos (60, 81, 102, 123, 144 e 165 dias após transplantio e corte), em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado. Foram avaliados os seguintes parâmetros: largura média e comprimento do par de folhas basal, mediano e apical; altura da planta; diâmetro do caule; e número de folhas. Aos 165 dias, também avaliaram-se produção de óleo essencial e fitomassa fresca e seca da parte aérea. Sessenta dias após a última avaliação, mensurou-se a rebrota a partir de altura, diâmetro do caule e número de folhas. O acesso JFE se destaca na emissão de folhas, com melhor desenvolvimento aos 165 dias após o transplantio. RPE e PRP respondem bem à rebrota aos 102 e 123 dias após o corte, respectivamente. O acesso SGS apresenta alta produção de óleo essencial de 2,2%, e o PVP, baixa produção de 0,3%.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth and essential oil content after transplantation and cutting of Lippia rotundifolia accessions from a natural population from the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Eight accessions were evaluated (PVP, GIG, RPE, ODA, JFE, PRP, SGS, and RTI) in six periods (60, 81, 102, 123, 144, and 165 days after transplanting and cutting), in a completely randomized experimental design. The following parameters were assessed: average width and length of the basal, median, and apical pair of leaves; plant height; stem diameter; and number of leaves. At 165 days, the yield of essential oil and the fresh and dry phytomass of the aerial part were also evaluated. Sixty days after the last evaluation, regrowth was measured from height, stem diameter, and number of leaves. The JFE accession stands out for emission of leaves, with a better development at 165 days after transplanting. RPE and PRP respond well to regrowth at 102 and 123 days after cutting, respectively. The SGS accession shows a high essential oil yield of 2.2%, and PVP, a low yield of 0.3%.
