Resumen La neutralidad en relación con la comunidad científica y publicación de resultados es esencial, en vista de que toda teoría aplicada en las diversas áreas del conocimiento es generada por investigaciones científicas. La manipulación o falsificación de resultados es una de las prácticas más condenables, ya que difunde datos falsos o incorrectos. Este estudio evaluó si la producción científica y la obtención de resultados estuvieron pautadas en la ética y en el principio de neutralidad, a través de una revisión integradora de la literatura. Los resultados demostraron que en el 100 % de los trabajos seleccionados existe mala conducta científica, y que esta ha aumentado significativamente en todo el mundo, siendo difícil su identificación. Los motivos más comunes para la falsificación de datos fueron la búsqueda de reconocimiento y la competencia en el medio académico. Por lo tanto, una conducta responsable y ética de sociedades y comités científicos, y editores de periódicos se torna imprescindible en la credibilidad de los resultados encontrados en las investigaciones científicas.

Abstract Neutrality about the scientific community and publication of results are essential since all applied theory in different fields of knowledge is generated by scientific research. The manipulation or falsification of results is one of the most reprehensible practices, as it disseminates false or incorrect data. This study evaluated whether scientific production and the achievement of results were based on ethics and the principle of neutrality, through an integrative literature review. The results showed that 100% of the analyzed studies had scientific misconduct and that it has significantly increased worldwide getting difficult to identify. The most common reasons for data falsification were the quest for recognition and competition in the academic community. Therefore, a responsible conduct and ethical of societies, scientific committees, and journal editors become essential in the credibility of the results found in scientific research.

Portanto, uma conduta responsável e ética de sociedades e comitês científicos, e editores de periódicos, torna-se imprescindível na credibilidade dos resultados encontrados nas pesquisas científicas.

Resumo Introdução O armazenamento de dentes para utilização em pesquisas é uma questão controvérsia e não há consenso sobre o método de tratamento mais apropriado para esta finalidade. Objetivo O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a efetividade e a influência de diferentes métodos de descontaminação e armazenamento do esmalte dentário humano, a fim de manter sua integridade. Material e método A amostra foi constituída por 124 molares distribuídos aleatoriamente em três grupos, de acordo com o método: controle – água destilada, soluções de timol a 0,1% e de azida de sódio a 0,02%. Os testes realizados foram fluorescência a laser, microdureza de superfície e análise de perfilometria (0, 15 e 30 dias) e teste microbiológico (7, 15 e 30 dias). Os dados foram analisados por meio dos testes ANOVA e Tukey (p<0,05). Resultado No teste de fluorescência a laser, a solução de timol a 0,1% demonstrou ser mais viável na manutenção da integridade do órgão dentário, uma vez que este não apresentou variações significativas nos valores entre os períodos avaliados (p<0,05). A análise de microdureza de superfície evidenciou perda de estrutura dentária em todos os métodos, sendo que a azida de sódio promoveu menor perda dentária. Na análise de perfilometria observou-se perda de estrutura em todos os grupos, com maior perda no grupo azida de sódio. Nenhum dos métodos conseguiu inibir o crescimento bacteriano. Conclusão: Dentre os métodos de processamento analisados nenhum foi capaz de aliar a efetividade na descontaminação ao armazenamento com manutenção da integridade estrutural do esmalte dentário humano.

Abstract Introduction The storage of teeth for use in research is a controversial issue with no consensus on the most appropriate treatment method for this purpose. Objective The aim of this study was analyze the effectiveness and the influence of different methods of decontamination and storage of human enamel samples, in order to maintain their integrity. Material and method The sample consisted of 124 molars distributed randomly into three groups according to the method: control - distilled water, 0.1% thymol and 0.02% sodium azide. The tests performed were laser fluorescence, surface microhardness and profilometry analysis (0, 15 and 30 days) and Microbiological test (7, 15 and 30 days). Data were analyzed by the ANOVA and Tukey tests (P <0.05). Result In the laser fluorescence test, thymol proved to be more feasible for maintaining the integrity of the dental organ, since it did not show significant variations in values among the analyzed periods (P> 0.05). The surface microhardness analysis showed loss of tooth structure in all methods, and sodium azide led to a lower level of tooth loss. Profilometry analysis showed loss of mass in all groups whereas sodium azide showed the greatest loss. None of the methods was able to inhibit bacterial growth. Conclusion Among the processing methods analyzed none was able to combine effective decontamination and storage with maintenance of the structural integrity of the human enamel.

Abstract This study evaluated the effect of Euclea natalensis gel on the reduction of erosive wear with or without abrasion, in enamel and dentin. During two five-day experimental crossover phases, volunteers (n = 10) wore palatal devices containing human enamel and dentin blocks (E = 8 and D = 8). The gel was applied in a thin layer in the experimental group, and was not applied in the control group. In the intraoral phase, volunteers used the palatal appliance for 12 h before the gel treatment, and were instructed to start the erosive challenges 6 h after the gel application. Erosion was performed with Coca-Cola® (for 5 min) 4 times/day. The appliance was then put back into the mouth and was brushed after 30 minutes. After intraoral exposure, the appliances were removed and the specimens were analyzed using profilometry (mean ± SD, μm). The Euclea natalensis gel caused less wear in enamel in the experimental group (EROS = 12.86 ± 1.75 µm; EROS + ABRAS = 12.13 ± 2.12 µm) than in the control group (EROS = 14.12 ± 7.66 µm; EROS + ABRAS = 16.29 ± 10.72 µm); however, the groups did not differ from each other significantly. A statistically significant value was found for erosion and eros + abrasion in dentin (p = 0.001). Euclea natalensis may play a role in the prevention of dentin loss under mild erosive and abrasive conditions. A clinical trial is required to confirm these promising results in a clinical situation.

OBJETIVOS: Identificar os instrumentos epidemiológicos que estão sendo utilizados em Saúde Pública e trazer informações a respeito das alterações oclusais mais prevalentes em crianças e em adolescentes por meio de uma revisão da literatura sobre a má oclusão. MÉTODOS: Foram recuperadas informações apresentadas em trabalhos anteriores, incluídas em artigos publicados no período 1997-2007, considerando a produção registrada nas seguintes bases de dados bibliográficas: Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Literatura Internacional em Ciências da Saúde e Bibliografia Brasileira de Odontologia. RESULTADOS: Do total de 191 referências identificadas, 170 foram eliminadas após a implementação dos critérios de exclusão e 21 artigos atenderam aos critérios de inclusão pré-estabelecidos, servindo, portanto, de base para este trabalho. A utilização de critérios distintos dificultou a comparação entre os estudos, não disponibilizando parâmetros que pudessem nortear as evidências científicas. Conclusão: Os índices epidemiológicos mais adotados foram o Índice de Estética Dental e o Índice de Necessidade de Tratamento Ortodôntico, sendo observado predomínio de mordida aberta anterior na dentição decídua e de apinhamento nas dentições mista e permanente.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this literature review about malocclusion was to identify epidemiologic instruments which are being used in Public Health, as well as to bring information regarding the occlusal alterations more prevalent in children and adolescents. METHODS: Information presented in previous studies was reviewed, in articles published in period 1997-2007, considering the production registered in the following databases: Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences, Scientific Electronic Library Online, International Database for Medical Literature and Brazilian Dentistry Bibliography. RESULTS: The total of 191 identified references, 170 had been eliminated after the implementation of the exclusion criteria and 21 articles met the proposed inclusion criteria and had served of base for this work. The use of different criteria made difficult the comparison of studies in literature and did not offer parameters that can guide the scientific evidences. CONCLUSION: The most used epidemiologic indices were Dental Aesthetic Index and Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need and it was observed predominance of open bite in the deciduous dentition and crowding in the mixed and permanent dentitions.

Prostate cancer represents the most frequent non-cutaneous neoplasia in males. This type of neoplasia can develop peculiar patterns of evolution, presenting, in many cases, precocious relapses and metastasis. Bone metastasis in the mouth is extremely rare, and represents 1% of all malignant mouth neoplasias. The aim of the present study is to report a clinical case of bone metastasis in the mandibular region associated with a tumoral prostate adenocarcinoma, as well as to discuss connected aspects about diagnosis, prognosis and integrated treatment of this condition.

OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão sistemática da literatura sobre a associação entre o Diabetes Mellitus e as manifestações bucais. MÉTODO: Os métodos aplicados incluíram estratégia de busca na literatura e critérios de inclusão e exclusão para a seleção dos artigos a serem adotados. As bases de dados incluídas foram PubMed, SciElo, BBO e LILACS, até setembro de 2011. Os artigos selecionados investigaram a associação ou não do Diabetes Mellitus com manifestações bucais, excluindo a doença periodontal. RESULTADO: De 1164 artigos encontrados, 30 deles estavam de acordo com os critérios de inclusão, podendo permanecer no estudo. As manifestações bucais foram associadas com Diabetes Mellitus em 20 estudos. Os desfechos relacionados foram candidíase, hipossalivação, líquen plano bucal, estomatite por dentadura e lesões linguais. CONCLUSÃO: Os pacientes portadores de Diabetes Mellitus estão mais predispostos a apresentar candidíase e hipossalivação, podendo agravar muito determinadas condições de saúde bucal.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to systematically review studies on the association between diabetes mellitus and oral manifestations. METHOD: The methods applied include a literature search strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria for selecting the studies, characteristics of the studies were adopted. Data bases included PubMed, SciElo, BBO and LILACS until September 2011. Selected articles were related to clinical studies investigating whether or not there is an association between diabetes mellitus and oral manifestations, excluding periodontal disease. RESULT: Of the 1164 studies identified, 30 of them remained in the study due the inclusion criteria. The oral manifestations were associated with diabetes mellitus in 20 studies. The diseases candidiasis, hypossalivation, oral lichen planus, dentadure stomatitis and tongue lesions were related. CONCLUSION: Patients with diabetes mellitus are more susceptible to the candidiasis and hypossalivation, which in turn may exacerbate other oral health conditions.

O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar a prevalência das manifestações bucais em pacientes HIV+/SIDA do Hospital Pediátrico DIA de Maputo. Foram incluídos 90 pacientes na pesquisa. Cárie dentária (índice ceod/CPOD), mucosa e fluxo salivar foram avaliados. Informações sobre alimentação e hábitos de higiene bucal foram obtidas por meio de um questionário. Para a análise estatística foram utilizados os testes t-student e qui-quadrado. A lesão oral mais frequente foi a candidíase (5,5%) e no exame extra-oral foi observada uma prevalência de alargamento da parótida de 23%. A média do ceod foi 2,6 (± 3,6) dentes, consideravelmente alta em relação ao CPOD que foi de 0,6 (±1,6) dentes, sendo esta diferença estatisticamente significante (p<0,05). A ocorrência de lesões na mucosa bucal foi maior em crianças que não faziam uso da terapia antiretroviral (TRA). O uso da TRA esteve associado com a redução da prevalência de lesões bucais em pacientes HIV+, contudo cáries rampantes foram maiores neste grupo. Pacientes HIV+ mostraram maior risco de cáries na dentadura decídua.

Data on dental caries (dmft/DMFT index), soft tissues and saliva flow were analyzed. Information on diet and hygienic habits was obtained in a semi-structured questionnaire. The t- student and chi-square tests were used for statistical assessment. The most frequent oral lesion was candidiasis (5.5%) and upon further oral examination the prevalence of parotid enlargement was 23.0%. The mean dmft 2.6 (SD 3.6) was considerably higher in relation to DMFT of 0.6 (SD 1.6), and the differences between them were statistically significant (P<0.05). The occurrence of mucosal lesions was higher in children who did not take antiretroviral therapy (ART) (p= 0.026). The use of ART is associated with reduced prevalence of oral lesions in HIV+ patients; however, rampant caries were highest in this group. Primary dentition of HIV+ patients should be considered high risk for caries.

OBJETIVO: Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a qualidade do DNA obtido de saliva humana armazenada e sua aplicabilidade da identificação de pessoas. METODOLOGIA: Analisaram-se amostras salivares de n=20 sujeitos da pesquisa, coletadas nas formas de saliva in natura e de swab bucal, sendo armazenadas a 20ºC. Após 7 dias, o DNA foi extraído das 40 amostras de saliva e submetido à PCR e à eletroforese. Após 180 dias repetiu-se a técnica nas 20 amostras de swab. RESULTADOS: Os resultados da primeira etapa indicaram que o DNA foi extraído com sucesso em 97,5% das reações, e, analisando-se separadamente, em 95% de saliva in natura e em 100% da saliva do swab, não havendo diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre as duas formas de saliva. Na segunda fase, o resultado foi positivo para as 20 amostras analisadas (100%). Posteriormente, para analisar a qualidade do DNA obtido da saliva humana, o gene SIX3-2 foi testado nas 20 amostras de swab bucal e foi feita a digestão do produto da PCR com a enzima de restrição MbO1 para avaliar polimorfismo do gene ADRA-2 obtendo-se resultados positivos para a maioria das amostras. CONCLUSÃO: Concluiu-se que a quantidade e a qualidade do DNA advindo de saliva e as técnicas empregadas estão adequadas à análise forense do DNA.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the quality of DNA obtained from stored human saliva and its applicability to human identification. METHODS: The saliva samples of 20 subjects, collected in the form of saliva in natura and from mouth swabs and stored at -20ºC, were analyzed. After 7 days, the DNA was extracted from the 40 saliva samples and subjected to PCR and electrophoresis. After 180 days, the technique was repeated with the 20 swab samples. RESULTS: The first-stage results indicated that DNA was successfully extracted in 97.5% of reactions, 95% of saliva in natura and 100% of swab saliva samples, with no statistically significant difference between the forms of saliva. In the second phase, the result was positive for all 20 analyzed samples (100%). Subsequently, in order to analyze the quality of the DNA obtained from human saliva, the SIX3-2 gene was tested on the 20 mouth swab samples, and the PCR products were digested using the MbO1 restriction enzyme to evaluate polymorphisms in the ADRA-2 gene, with positive results for most samples. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the quantity and quality of DNA from saliva and the techniques employed are adequate for forensic analysis of DNA.

The established importance of Forensic Dentistry for human identification, mainly when there is little remaining material to perform such identification (e.g., in fires, explosions, decomposing bodies or skeletonized bodies), has led dentists working with forensic investigation to become more familiar with the new molecular biology techniques. The currently available DNA tests have high reliability and are accepted as legal proofs in courts. This article presents a literature review referring to the main studies on Forensic Dentistry that involve the use of DNA for human identification, and makes an overview of the evolution of this technology in the last years, highlighting the importance of molecular biology in forensic sciences.
