Abstract: The main aim of this paper is to demonstrate the benefits that building using natural elements can provide to indoor environments when temperatures are lower. For this purpose, an experimental procedure was used to allow a comparison of the thermal behaviour of four systems: a prototype called Control (no vegetation) and three different combinations of vegetation (roofs and facades) installed in a region of tropical climate. They recorded simultaneously internal surface temperatures, internal air temperature and the external environmental conditions. The results show that the use of plant systems in buildings establishes a passive technique effective in reducing energy consumption, because of its insulation property and it maintains more pleasant thermal internal conditions than internal ones.

Resumen: El objetivo de este trabajo es demostrar los beneficios que los sistemas constructivos con envolventes vegetales pueden ofrecer a los ambientes internos cuando las temperaturas son más bajas. Para ello, se ha utilizado un procedimiento experimental que permite la comparación del comportamiento térmico de cuatro sistemas: un prototipo llamado Control (sin vegetación) y tres con diferentes combinaciones de vegetación (cubiertas y fachadas) construidos en una región de clima tropical. Se registraron simultáneamente las temperaturas de las superficies internas, las temperaturas del aire interno y las condiciones del ambiente externo. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran que el uso de sistemas vegetales en la edificación constituye una técnica pasiva efectiva en la reducción del consumo de energía debido a su capacidad tanto de aislamiento térmico como de conservación de unas condiciones internas más agradables.

Resumo O fluxo de calor entre o piso e o solo de uma edificação térrea é um dos aspectos mais influentes em seu desempenho térmico e energético. No entanto, há ainda um grande número de incertezas e poucos estudos nessa área. Neste trabalho comparam-se diferentes alternativas de modelagem nos programas EnergyPlus (8.5.0) e Slab (.75) dos parâmetros relacionados à transferência de calor entre o piso e o solo, e sua influência no desempenho térmico de uma edificação térrea naturalmente ventilada, localizada em São Carlos, Brasil. A comparação das alternativas de modelagem indicou grande variação nos resultados. Quando comparado ao Slab, o método KusudaAchenbach do objeto Ground Domain apresentou a maior variação, com diferença de 55,2 % no número de horas de desconforto. Observou-se que mesmo a forma de uso do Slab pode causar diferenças significativas nos resultados; por exemplo, a adoção ou não do procedimento de convergência. A condutividade térmica do solo foi um parâmetro de grande impacto, que implicou diferenças de até 57,5 % no desconforto. Tais resultados fornecem indicações da variabilidade e do impacto de uso das diferentes opções de modelagem desse fluxo de calor no EnergyPlus.

Abstract The heat flow through the floor and the ground of a single-story slab-on-grade building is one of the most influential aspects in its thermal and energy performance. However, there are still many uncertainties and only few studies on the subject. This study compares different modeling alternatives of the parameters related to the heat transfer between the floor and the ground, and their influence in the thermal performance of a naturally ventilated single-story house located in São Carlos, Brazil, using the programs EnergyPlus (8.5.0) and Slab (.75). The comparison between the modeling alternatives indicated wide variation in the results. When compared with Slab, the KusudaAchenbach method of the object Ground Domain presented the largest variation, with a difference of 55.2 % in the number of degree-hours of discomfort. It was observed that even the way of using Slab - for example, with or without the convergence procedure - could cause significant differences in the results. The thermal conductivity of the soil was a parameter of great impact, resulting in differences of up to 57.5 % in discomfort. Such results provide indications of the variability and impact of the different modeling options for this type of heat transfer in EnergyPlus.

Imperfeições, saliências e reentrâncias existentes nas superfícies típicas das edificações constituem obstáculos que podem alterar significativamente o comportamento delas em relação aos fluxos por radiação. Além de ampliar a área efetiva de troca de calor, criam sombras e reflexões, que não ocorreriam em. Assim, os procedimentos de cálculo, ao invés de considerar as superfícies perfeitamente lisas e planas, deveriam aplicar correções nas propriedades radiativas das superfícies. Denominam-se efetivas as absortâncias e emitâncias que resultam dessas correções. O presente artigo apresenta um método simples desenvolvido para avaliar essas influências e exemplifica a importância das correções acima mencionadas, apresentando resultados de simulações elaboradas no programa EnergyPlus para uma edificação de geometria simples, submetida ao longo de 1 ano ao clima da cidade de Brasília. Adotando-se absortâncias e emitâncias efetivas, os resultados das simulações revelam diferenças de até 2,8 ºC nas temperaturas internas do ar em relação às obtidas desprezando-se as influências que as ondulações das telhas exercem sobre os fluxos radiantes. Considerando o uso de condicionadores de ar, essa diferença pode representar uma variação de cerca de 30% nas estimativas de consumo de energia.

Building surfaces usually have bumps and hollows that can significantly change their behaviour in relation to radiant flow. Therefore, the usual calculation procedures, instead of adopting the simplification that all surfaces of a construction are perfect plans, should apply corrections in the radiative properties of those surfaces. The effective absorptances and emittances resulting from those surface irregularities should be considered. This paper presents a simple method to evaluate those influences and exemplifies the importance of such aspects, presenting results of simulations developed in EnergyPlus for a simple geometry building, over a one-year period, in the city of Brasilia. Adopting effective absorptances and emittances, simulation results show differences of up to 2.8 ºC in the internal air temperature, compared to those obtained ignoring the influences that the ripples of the tiles have on radiant flows. Considering the use of air conditioners, this could represent up to 30% variation in the energy consumption estimate.
