Abstract Firefighters have high exposure to traumatic events and have an increased risk of developing symptoms related to trauma. The current study assessed the psychological morbidity, empathy and alexithymia of volunteer firefighters compared to career firefighters and to non-firefighter comparators from the general population. Group differences were assessed using multivariate comparisons and univariate tests and discriminant analysis for individual measures. A total of 1062 individuals completed the protocol. Considering firefighters as the focus of analysis, data suggested that both career and volunteer firefighters presented higher trauma than the comparison group. In subscales of empathy, compared to the comparison group, career firefighters scored higher on the perspective-taking scale, while firefighters showed less personal discomfort and less fantasy. Firefighters showed less alexithymia, in the outward-oriented style of thinking than the comparison group. The findings suggest the need for more prevention and treatment efforts for firefighters, with the introduction of educational and therapeutic interventions.

Abstract This study aimed to adapt the Compassion Fatigue-Short Scale to Portugal and examine the reliability and validity of the Portuguese version of the scale (Pt-CF-Short Scale) among Portuguese firefighters. The factor structure of the Pt-CF-Short Scale was compared to the one-factor model fit and a two-factor model and second-order factor model in a sample of 512 firefighters. Confirmatory factor analysis procedures confirmed the good fit of a second-order factor model with two first-order factors (secondary trauma and job burnout). The Pt-CF-Short Scale showed good internal consistency evidence. The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K-10), the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and WHOQOOL-Bref were used as convergent measures to assess psychological distress, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal sensitivity and quality of life, respectively. The measure presented a strong correlation with psychological distress and weak and negative association with quality of life. The Pt-CF-Short Scale contributes to understanding compassion fatigue and its correlates within the context of emergency workers. Results indicate that this scale is a valid and reliable assessment tool in evaluating compassion fatigue.

Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo adaptar a Compassion Fatigue-Short Scale para Portugal e examinar a fiabilidade e validade da versão portuguesa da escala (Pt-CFShort Scale) entre bombeiros portugueses. A estrutura fatorial da CF-Short Scale foi comparada com o ajuste do modelo de um fator e um modelo de dois fatores e um modelo de fator de segunda ordem em uma amostra de 512 bombeiros. Os procedimentos de análise fatorial confirmatória confirmaram o bom ajuste de um modelo fatorial de segunda ordem com dois fatores de primeira ordem (trauma secundário e esgotamento profissional). As evidências de consistência interna mostraram bons coeficientes e boa validade convergente foi encontrada ao correlacionar essa escala com sofrimento psíquico, ansiedade, depressão e sensibilidade interpessoal. No entanto, essa medida apresentou associação fraca e negativa com as dimensões do WHOQOL-Bref. A validade discriminante foi confirmada. A escala Pt-CF-short contribui para a compreensão da trajetória da fadiga por compaixão e seus correlatos no contexto dos socorristas. Os resultados indicam que esta escala é uma ferramenta de avaliação válida e confiável na avaliação da fadiga por compaixão.

Resumen: La discriminación salarial basada en el género del trabajador está prohibida en Brasil desde hace casi ochenta años. Sin embargo, la desigualdad salarial entre hombres y mujeres persiste. Este trabajo presenta una sistematización de las propuestas teóricas y de las investigaciones empíricas sobre las trayectorias de la brecha salarial de género. El objetivo es identificar los mecanismos causales que explican las diferencias salariales entre hombres y mujeres que se presentan en la literatura, con el fin de comprender mejor los limitados impactos de las políticas de igualdad salarial entre hombres y mujeres en el país y las razones que dificultan la eliminación o mitigación de estos factores causales. Abstract: Wage discrimination based on the gender of the worker has been forbidden in Brazil for almost eighty years. Nevertheless, wage inequality between men and women persists. This paper presents a systematization of theoretical propositions and empirical research on the trajectories of the gender wage gap. The objective is to identify the causal mechanisms explaining the gender pay gap presented in the literature, in order to better understand the limited impacts of gender pay equity policies in the country and the reasons that hinder the elimination or mitigation of these causal factors. Abstract Objective To assess the association between two colposcopic indices, the Swede score and the 2011 International Federation of Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy (IFCPC) Nomenclature as well as to determine the efficacy of the Swede score with cutoffs of 7 and 8. Methods In the present cross-sectional pilot study, 34 women who had at least 1 colposcopy-directed biopsy due to abnormal cytology were enrolled. The colposcopic findings were scored by both the Swede score and the 2011 IFCPC Nomenclature and were compared with each other. The Kappa coefficient and the McNemar test were used. Accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values (NPV and PPV, respectively) were calculated, as well as the effectiveness with cutoffs of 7 and 8 in identifying cervical intraepithelial neoplasm (CIN) 2+ when using the Swede score. Results The correlation between the 2 colposcopic indices was 79.41%. The Kappa coefficient and the McNemar p-value were 0.55 and 0.37, respectively. The IFCPC Nomenclature had sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, PPV, and NPV of 85.71, 55.00, 67.64, 57.14, and 84.61%, respectively. The Swede score had sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, PPV, and NPV of 100, 63.15, 79.41, 68.18, and 100%, respectively. A Swede score cutoff of 7 for CIN 2+ detection had a specificity of 94.73%, while with a cutoff of 8 it increased to 100%. The sensitivity for both values was 60%. The PPV and NPV for cutoffs of 7 and 8 were 90 and 75 and 100 and 76%, respectively. Resumo Objetivo Avaliar a associação entre dois índices colposcópicos, o escore Swede e a Nomenclatura International Federation of Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy (IFCPC, na sigla em inglês) 2011, assim como determinar a eficácia do escore Swede com os pontos de corte 7 e 8. Métodos Trata-se de um estudo transversal, com 34 mulheres incluídas, que realizaram colposcopia com biópsia dirigida devido a uma citologia anormal. Os achados colposcópicos foram categorizados pelo escore Swede e pela Nomenclatura IFCPC 2011 e comparados um com o outro. Foram avaliados o coeficiente Kappa e o teste de McNemar e foram calculados a acurácia, a sensibilidade, a especificidade e valores preditivos negativos e positivos (VPN e VPP, respectivamente) de cada índice, assim como a eficácia com os pontos de corte 7 e 8 do escore Swede para determinar as lesões de neoplasia intraepitelial cervical (NIC) 2 + . Resultados A concordância entre os 2 índices foi de 79,41% e o coeficiente Kappa e o valor-p do teste de McNemar foram 0.55 e 0.37, respectivamente. Pela Nomenclatura IFCPC 2011, obtivemos como sensibilidade, especificidade, acurácia, VPP e VPN, respectivamente: 85,71, 55,00, 67,64, 57,14 e 84,61%. Pelo escore Swede obtivemos como sensibilidade, especificidade, acurácia, VPP e VPN, respectivamente: 100, 63,15, 79,41, 68,18 e 100%. O uso do escore Swede para detecção das lesões NIC 2+ obteve como especificidade 94,73% com o valor de corte de 7, enquanto o valor de corte 8 obteve 100%. A sensibilidade para ambos os cortes foi de 60%. O VPP e o VPN com os cortes 7 e 8 foram, respectivamente: 90,00 e 75,00 e 100,00 e 76,00%. Conclusão Ambos os índices colposcópicos tiveram boa reprodutibilidade; no entanto, o escore Swede mostrou melhor acurácia, sensibilidade e especificidade em identificar as lesões NIC 2+ e o melhor ponto de corte para identificar as lesões NIC2+ foi com o valor 8. Resumo Discute-se os enfrentamentos na área educacional na Constituinte e suas origens históricas, segundo o percurso teórico e político do sociólogo e deputado constituinte Florestan Fernandes. O desafio de romper o nó górdio da democracia em sua articulação com a pauta da educação pública constitui a chave de leitura pela qual percorremos as manifestações de Florestan à época da ANC. As fontes utilizadas foram seus textos publicados em jornais e seus discursos na Constituinte organizados em coletâneas e que estão disponíveis nos arquivos digitais do congresso. Em consonância com as quatro etapas da ANC, procedeu-se a uma leitura dos textos e discursos de Florestan Fernandes num percurso cronológico que acompanhou os principais momentos da Constituinte. Assim, o material analisado foi organizado em três núcleos temáticos que têm profunda conexão com as esperanças e impasses do processo constituinte: (i) Desafios históricos da Constituinte; (ii) O processo constituinte, a participação popular e a educação; e (iii) Transição Transada e os limites da “Nova República”. Nesta última fase, já aparecem os limites com os quais a Constituinte se deparava e impediam mais uma vez na história brasileira a ruptura do nó górdio das reformas democráticas.

Abstract This text aims to discuss de struggles in the educational area in the National Constituent Assembly and its historical origins, following the theoretical and political ideas of sociologist and constituent deputy Florestan Fernandes. The challenge of breaking the democracy’s Gordian knot in its articulation with the public education agenda constitute the reading key used to follow Fernandes’ manifestations in the Constituent Assembly. The sources used were his articles in newspapers and his speeches in the Constituent Assembly, which are organized in collections and are available in the digital files of the Congress. In parallel with the four stages of the Constituent Assembly, we read Florestan Fernandes’ texts and discourses in a chronological path that followed its main moments. Thus, the analyzed material was organized into three core themes deeply related to the hopes and impasses of the constituent process: (i) Historical challenges of the Constituent Assembly; (ii) The constituent process, popular participation, and education; and (iii) The transacted transition and the limits of the “New Republic.” This last stage already shows the limits that the Constituent Process faced, which, again in Brazilian history, prevented the rupture of the Gordian knot of democratic reforms.

Resumen Este texto pretende discutir los enfrentamientos en el área educativa en la Asamblea Constituyente y sus orígenes históricos, a partir del transcurso teórico y político del sociólogo y diputado constituyente Florestan Fernandes. El desafío de romper el nudo gordiano de la democracia en su articulación con la pauta de la educación pública constituye la clave de lectura por la cual traspasa las manifestaciones de Florestan en la época de la Asamblea Nacional Constituyente (ANC). Se utilizaron como fuentes sus textos publicados en periódicos y sus discursos en la Asamblea Constituyente, recopilados y disponibles en los archivos digitales del Congreso. En consonancia con las cuatro etapas de la ANC, se procedió a una lectura de los textos y discursos de Florestan Fernandes en un transcurso cronológico que acompañó los principales momentos de la Asamblea Constituyente. De esta manera, el material analizado se organizó en tres núcleos temáticos que tienen una profunda conexión con las esperanzas e impases del proceso constituyente: (i) Desafíos históricos de la Asamblea Constituyente; (ii) El proceso constituyente, la participación popular y la educación; y (iii) Transición Transacionada y los límites de la “Nueva República”; En esta última fase, ya aparecen los límites con los cuales la Asamblea Constituyente se deparaba e impedían, una vez más en la historia brasileña, superar el nudo gordiano de las reformas democráticas.

Abstract Genes related to the response to drought stress in leaf and root tissue of drought-susceptible (DS) and tolerant (DT) genotypes were characterized by RNA-Seq. In total, 54,750 transcripts, representative of 28,590 genes, were identified; of these, 1,648 were of high-fidelity (merge of 12 libraries) and described for the first time in the Andean germplasm. From the 1,239 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), 458 were identified in DT, with a predominance of genes in categories of oxidative stress, response to stimulus and kinase activity. Most genes related to oxidation-reduction terms in roots were early triggered in DT (T75) compared to DS (T150) suggestive of a mechanism of tolerance by reducing the damage from ROS. Among the KEGG enriched by DEGs up-regulated in DT leaves, two related to the formation of Sulfur-containing compounds, which are known for their involvement in tolerance to abiotic stresses, were common to all treatments. Through qPCR, 88.64% of the DEGs were validated. A total of 151,283 variants were identified and functional effects estimated for 85,780. The raw data files were submitted to the NCBI database. A transcriptome map revealed new genes and isoforms under drought. These results supports a better understanding of the drought tolerance mechanisms in beans.

Abstract Water deficit is one of the major limitations to soybean production worldwide, yet the genetic basis of drought-responsive mechanisms in crops remains poorly understood. In order to study the gene expression patterns in leaves and roots of soybean, two contrasting genotypes, Embrapa 48 (drought-tolerant) and BR 16 (drought-sensitive), were evaluated under moderate and severe water deficit. Transcription factors from the AP2/EREBP and WRKY families were investigated. Embrapa 48 showed 770 more up-regulated genes than BR 16, in eight categories. In general, leaves presented more differentially expressed genes (DEGs) than roots. Embrapa 48 responded to water deficit faster than BR 16, presenting a greater number of DEGs since the first signs of drought. Embrapa 48 exhibited initial modulation of genes associated with stress, while maintaining the level of the ones related to basic functions. The genes expressed exclusively in the drought-tolerant cultivar, belonging to the category of dehydration responsive genes, and the ones with a contrasting expression pattern between the genotypes are examples of important candidates to confer tolerance to plants. Finally, this study identified genes of the AP2/EREBP and WRKY families related to drought tolerance.

RESUMO: O texto analisa os editoriais da Revista Educação & Sociedade n. 1 a 57, abarcando o período entre 1978 e 1996. Percebe-se esta publicação como um corpus documental que expressa diferentes concepções educacionais e perspectivas políticas, que, em conexão com a ebulição no campo educacional no período, traz luz para amplas possibilidades de estudos oferecidas por este acervo. Procurou-se colocar em destaque o contexto de surgimento da Revista como expressão política de um grupo de intelectuais engajados na luta pela educação na construção de uma sociedade democrática. A Revista também se constituiu como um importante espaço de confronto de ideias, tornando-se uma referência fundamental para o estudo dos dilemas e desafios educacionais da realidade brasileira. O texto está organizado em três partes: inicialmente, a Revista é discutida como um espaço de consenso no rechaço à ditadura e à sua política educacional. Na segunda parte do texto destacam-se aspectos que exemplificam o intenso debate em que a Revista estava inscrita, como lugar de divergências teóricas e políticas. Por fim, na terceira parte, são tratados aspectos que se sobressaíram na análise dos editoriais na “Nova República”: o debate sobre a Lei de Diretrizes e Bases (LDB), as relações entre educação e trabalho, em meio às políticas de cunho neoliberal, e o processo de reestruturação produtiva.

ABSTRACT: The text analyses the editorial of the Magazine Education and Society issues 1 to 57, encompassing the period between 1978 and 1996. This publication is perceived as a documentary corpus that expresses both different educational concepts and political perspectives that, in connection with the ebullience in the educational field during such period, sheds light on the broad possibilities of study provided by this collection. The context in which the journal emerged was put in the spotlight as a political expression of a group of intellectuals engaged in the fight towards education and the building of a democratic society. The journal is also an important space for clash of ideas, thus being an essential reference for the study of dilemmas and educational challenges of the Brazilian reality. This article is organized in three sections: initially, the journal is referred to as a space of consensus about rejection of both dictatorship and its educational policies. The second part of the text highlights some aspects that exemplify the intense debate in which the journal was inserted, as a place for theoretical and political divergences. Finally, in the third section, aspects standing out from the editorials addressing the “New Republic” are approached: a debate about LDB, the relationship between education and work amongst neoliberal policies, and the process of productive restructuring.

RÉSUMÉ: Cete article analyse les éditoriaux de la revue Educação & Sociedade, éditions 1 à 57, englobant la période entre 1978 et 1996. Cette publication est perçue comme un corpus documentaire qui exprime des conceptions pédagogiques et des perspectives politiques différentes, lesquelles, en rapport avec l’ébullition dans le domaine de l’éducation de cette période, éclaire les larges possibilités d›études permis par cet assortiment. En visant à mettre en évidence le contexte de l›émergence de la Révue, en tant qu›expression politique d›un groupe d›intellectuels engagés dans la lutte pour l›éducation pour la construction d’une société démocratique. La revue, également, constituait un importante espace de confrontation d’idées, en devenant une référence fondamentale pour l’étude des dilemmes et des défis éducatifs de la réalité brésilienne. Le texte est organisé en trois parties: d’abord, la revue est débattue comme une place de consensus en repoussant la dictature et sa politique d’éducation. Dans la deuxième partie, soulignent certains aspects qui illustrent un débat intens dans lequel la revue se trouve, en tant que lieu des divergences théoriques et politiques. Enfin, dans la troisième partie, on aborde des aspects qui se démarquant de l’analyse des éditoriaux de la “Nouvelle République”: le débat sur la LDB, les rapports entre éducation et travail, face des politiques néolibérales et le processus de restructuration productive.

RESUMO: Nos movimentos que se colocam contra a ordem estabelecida, faz-se necessária uma formação que dê conta de compreender as circunstâncias vividas a partir de suas contradições sociais, numa visão que privilegie a transformação da realidade por aqueles que se colocam em luta. No caso do Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST), ao mesmo tempo em que o conflito imediato se dá pela terra, as lutas expressam a permanência da questão agrária como fundamento da elevada exploração do trabalho no Brasil. A questão que se coloca é se os que estão na frente de combate possuem uma visão capaz de articular o olhar sobre as ocupações das quais participam, com a totalidade das relações que determinam a questão agrária em nosso país. Discute-se que a compreensão da totalidade das relações que estão na base da exploração do trabalho não advém espontaneamente da luta, mas de um trabalho sistemático de formação política articulada com o desenvolvimento da teoria e da prática relativas ao avançar dos embates entre as classes. Sendo assim, neste texto apresentamos nosso entendimento sobre formação política; em seguida, traçamos uma discussão sobre a formação política na pedagogia do MST e, por fim, realizamos uma reflexão crítica a esse respeito.

ABSTRACT: In the movements that arise against the established order, it is necessary a political formation that is able to understand the circumstances experienced from its social contradictions, in a vision that favors the transformation of reality by those who put themselves in struggle. In the case of the Landless Workers’ Movement (MST), while the immediate conflict is over land, struggles express the permanence of the agrarian question as the foundation of elevated labor exploitation in Brazil. The question that arises is whether those in struggle articulate the goals and meaning of the occupations in which they participate with the multiple determinations of the agrarian question in our country. It is argued that an understanding of the totality of the relationships that are in the base of labor exploitation does not come from struggle spontaneously, but rather from a systematic work of political education articulated with the development of theory and practice relative to the advance of the conflicts between classes. Thus, in this paper we present our understanding of political formation; then we draw a discussion of the political formation in MST’s pedagogy; and finally present a critical reflection on this.

RÉSUMÉ: Dans des mouvements sociaux qui se positionnent contre l’ordre établi il faut construire une formation politique qui ait la capacité d’appréhender les circonstances vécues à partir de leurs contradictions sociales, en privilégiant la transformation de la réalité par ceux qui sont engagés dans cette lutte. Dans le cas du Mouvement des Travailleurs Ruraux Sans Terre (MST), les luttes expriment, à la fois, le conflit immédiat pour l’accès à la terre et la continuité de la question foncière en tant que fondement du taux très élevé d’exploitation du travail au Brésil. La question à laquelle nous nous confrontons est de savoir si ceux qui étaient sur le front des actions réalisées par le MST articulaient les objectifs et le sens des occupations des terrains agricoles auxquelles ils participaient avec les déterminations multiples de la question agraire au Brésil. Dans ce sens, on montrera que la compréhension de la totalité des relations qui sont à la base de l’exploitation du travail n’advient pas spontanément de la lutte, mais d’un effort systématique de formation politique articulé avec le développement de la théorie et de la pratique relatives au progrès des conflits entre les classes. Ainsi, d’abord, nous présenterons notre interprétation de l’importance et du sens de la formation politique. Ensuite, nous nous focaliserons sur la place de la formation politique au sein de la pédagogie du MST et, enfin, on en proposera une évaluation critique.

RESUMO Objetivo: Este trabalho avaliou a modulação da microbiota gastrointestinal, do perfil de ácidos orgânicos e de lipídeos em ratas Wistar ovariectomizadas, sendo que algumas receberam dieta suplementada com 6% de fruto-oligossacarídeos e inulina, a partir do produto a base de yacon, e outras não. Métodos: Analisou-se o peso do ceco, pH e ácidos orgânicos, microbiota do conteúdo cecal, colesterol total e frações. Resultados: No grupo que recebeu a dieta suplementada durante todo o experimento ocorreu modulação benéfica da microbiota intestinal em função da fermentação dos fruto-oligossacarídeos/inulina, bem como aumento do perfil de lactato (p<0,05) e do nível de lipoproteina alta densidade (p<0,05). Conclusão: Isso sugere que o hábito de consumo contínuo do yacon tem potencial para modular a microbiota intestinal, o perfil de ácidos orgânicos e para diminuir as dislipidemias.

ABSTRACT Objective: Fructans, a type of inulin present in yacon based products, can modulate microbiota and fatty acid profile, performing many beneficial roles. From this perspective, this study assessed the modulation of the gastrointestinal microbiota, organic acid profile, and lipid profile of ovariectomized Wistar rats fed or not a diet containing 6% fructooligosaccharides and inulin from a yacon based product. Methods: Cecum weight, pH, and organic acids, cecal content microbiota, total cholesterol, and fractions were analyzed. Results: The group fed the diet supplemented with fructooligosaccharides and inulin during the study period experienced beneficial modulation of their intestinal microbiota stemming from fructooligosaccharide/inulin fermentation and increased lactate profile (p<0.05) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p<0.05). Conclusion: This suggests that regular yacon intake can potentially modulate the intestinal microbiota and organic acid profile, and reduce dyslipidemia.

The isolation and identification of bioactive metabolites from complex extracts obtained from microbial growth media is a time consuming, costly, and labor-intensive task. A strategy to rapidly identify secondary metabolites isolated from extracts obtained from the culture media of marine-derived and endophytic fungal strains is described. Identification was achieved by HPLC-UV-MS and 1H NMR analyses in combination with data obtained from the Dictionary of Natural Products. Among the compounds identified, (-)-naphthoquinoneimine, citreorosein, emodin, pyrenocine A and harzianopyridone displayed moderate to potent antiviral activity. (-)-Naphthoquinoneimine was isolated as the enantiomer of its previously reported dextrorotatory congener, while 6,7-dihydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-4-chromanone is herein reported for the first time as a natural product.

RESUMO Este artigo apresenta as principais teses do pensador Roberto Mangabeira Unger relacionadas a uma interpretação dos novos parâmetros da democracia ocidental, das instituições e da sociedade brasileira como um todo. Também desenvolve um diálogo com o autor, questionando alguns dos seus fundamentos. Mangabeira, ao pretender requalificar o debate sobre a democracia, a partir da adoção de novas alternativas institucionais, coloca-se num viés experimentalista. Utilizando-se de pressupostos marxistas numa mistura com pressupostos schumpeterianos, este autor é qualificado, nas palavras de Anderson (1992), como: "um profeta do primeiro mundo, a partir de uma abordagem filosófica do terceiro mundo". É nesse sentido que compreender suas teorias e dialogar/discordar tornam-se objetivos chaves deste trabalho.

ABSTRACT This paper discusses the importance of Roberto Mangabeira Unger's ideas, since he establishes new parameters for the occidental democracy, the institutions and the Brazilian society as a whole. His theory, by attempting to re-qualify the debate on democracy from the adoption of new institutional alternatives, expresses an experimentalist bias. Using Marxist assumptions with schumpeterian assumptions, the author is considered, in Anderson's (1992) words, as: "a prophet of the first world, from a philosophical approach of the third world". In this way, understanding his theories and dialoguing/disagreeing become key objectives of this work.

A preocupação mundial em relação à mortalidade infantil ganhou visibilidade com a divulgação no ano 2000 dos Objetivos do Desenvolvimento do Milênio, em que sua redução ganha destaque com a meta de número quatro, que propõe diminuir em dois terços sua taxa para crianças menores de cinco anos, no período entre 1990 e 2015. Reduzir a mortalidade infantil tem sido uma das prioridades das políticas sociais de saúde do governo brasileiro. A identificação de fatores de risco relacionados com a mortalidade infantil pode auxiliar no planejamento de ações para a reestruturação e melhoria da assistência à gestante e aos recém-nascidos, visando à redução da mortalidade infantil. Nesta perspectiva, o presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar a utilização do método de linkage na identificação de fatores de risco associados à mortalidade infantil. Utilizou-se a Revisão Integrativa da Literatura. Foram analisados oito artigos na íntegra publicados entre 2008 e 2013, através dos descritores: mortalidade infantil, fatores de risco e sistemas de informação. O uso da técnica de linkage mostrou-se bastante útil, permitindo a adequada investigação dos fatores mais fortemente relacionados à mortalidade infantil, mostrando sua relevância para o estudo de problemas de saúde pública.

Global concern in relation to child mortality gained visibility with the release of the Millennium Development Goals in 2000 in which the reduction of child mortality is included under goal number four, which proposes to reduce the mortality rate of children under five years by two thirds between 1990 and 2015. Reducing child mortality has been a major priority of social health policies of the Brazilian government. The identification of risk factors associated with infant mortality can assist in the planning of actions to restructure and improve care for pregnant women and newborns in order to reduce child mortality. With this in mind, this study sets out to analyze the use of the linkage method to identify risk factors associated with infant mortality. An integrative review of the literature was conducted for this purpose and eight complete articles published between 2008 and 2013 were analyzed using the following key words: infant mortality, risk factors and information systems. The use of the linkage method proved to be very useful, enabling adequate investigation of the factors most strongly related to child mortality, showing its relevance to the study of public health problems.
