Abstract This paper discusses the escape of minors from family homes in Fortaleza, between the late 19th century and early 20th century. Houses of guardians and employers were spaces of correction by the ethos of work. Such “‘social orthopedics”‘ was based on the lordly habitus, inherited from the lordly relationships of slavery, woven into the domestic sphere. But these minors were capable of acting by themselves, making choices and promoting ruptures, even if punctual, in the paternalistic ties constituted at the core of the tutoring families within a social conjuncture between the end of slavery and the immediate post-Abolition context.

Resumo Este artigo trata da fuga de menores de idade das casas familiares de Fortaleza, do final do século XIX ao século XX. As casas de tutores e empregadores constituíram-se em espaços de correção pelo ethos do trabalho; tal “ortopedia social” se dava a partir do habitus senhorial, herança das relações senhoriais da escravidão, tecidas no âmbito doméstico. Mas, os menores provaram ser capazes de agir por si mesmos, de fazer escolhas e promover rupturas, ainda que pontuais, nos laços parternalistas constituídos no cerne das famílias tutoras numa conjuntura social compreendida entre o fim da escravidão e o contexto do imediato pós-Abolição.

Resumo: Este artigo trata da tentativa de aplicar em Fortaleza a postura municipal que objetivava regulamentar a contratação de criados de servir. Propõe-se que tal processo seja entendido a partir de um movimento mais amplo, observado em todo o país, de controle da mão de obra dos trabalhadores nas cidades, particularmente dos que prestavam serviços domésticos. São utilizadas variadas fontes, principalmente da Postura de Alocação de Criados de Servir, o Livro de Matrícula de Criados e o Arrolamento da População de Fortaleza de 1887. Todas foram produzidas pela Secretaria de Polícia no mesmo período e são iniciativas complementares que atendem à finalidade de envidar uma polícia das famílias, ou uma polícia preventiva de determinado segmento social. Tal projeto se viabilizaria na medida em que se lograsse pôr os trabalhadores domésticos sob a tutela dos chefes de família empregadores, por meio da matrícula de cada doméstico na polícia e da obrigação de portarem uma caderneta, documento em que os patrões fariam constar avaliações positivas ou negativas acerca dos criados. Como hipótese geral, defende-se que tais medidas, partindo do poder público por intermédio da instituição policial, eram tentativas de controlar a liberdade dos pobres na cidade, inclusive dos ex-escravos, que em Fortaleza continuaram servindo nos domicílios dos antigos proprietários.

Abstract: This article deals with the attempt of Fortaleza to apply a municipal regulation that aimed to regulate the hiring of house servants. We propose an understanding of this process from a broader movement, observed throughout the country, to control the labor of workers in cities, particularly those who provided domestic services. This article uses several research sources, mainly, the Posture of Allocation of Servants to Serve, the Book of Registration of Servants and the Enrollment of the Population of Fortaleza in 1887. All of them were produced by the Police Department in the same period and worked as complementary initiatives that sought to create a police for families, or a police to focus on a certain social segment. Such a project would become viable since domestic workers would be under the tutelage of employer household heads, and each would be registered in the police and obliged to carry an identification consisting of positive or negative assessments attributed to that individual by their employer. The general hypothesis is that such measures, coming from the government via the police, consisted of attempts to control the freedom of the poor in the city, including the former enslaved individuals, who, in Fortaleza, continued to serve in the homes of their former owners.

Resumo Este artigo trata do contexto histórico da regulamentação do serviço doméstico em Fortaleza, capital cearense, entre 1881 e 1887; e busca dar a ver quais os interesses em torno do estabelecimento de Código de Posturas para a alocação de criados de servir e amas de leite. A partir de análises de discursos em periódicos coevos e do exame de fontes como o Livro de Matrícula de Criados de Servir de 1887, produzido no âmbito da Secretaria de Polícia, bem como do de outras fontes policiais, a exemplo dos ofícios da Chefatura de Polícia remetidos à presidência da Província, pode-se situar, no contexto da abolição dos escravos no Ceará, haja vista a ação de traficantes de escravos durante a seca de 1877-79, as medidas de regulação do serviço doméstico, a fim de envidar controle social sobre uma parcela dos pobres daquela cidade.

Abstract This article discusses the historical context of the regulation of domestic service in Fortaleza, capital of Ceará, between 1881 and 1887; and seeks to show which interests around the establishment of the Code of Postures for allocation of servants and wet nurses. From analyzes of speeches in contemporary newspapers and examination of sources such as the Book of registration of servants of 1887, produced in the frameworw of the Police Secretary, as well as of other police sources, as an example of the letters of the Police Chieftancy sent to the presidency of the Province, may be situated in the context of the abolition of slaves in Ceará, due to the action of traffickers of slaves during the drought of 1877-79, measures to regulate domestic service, in order to make social control in part of the poor of that city.
