ABSTRACT: This study assessed the nitrogen nutrition index, morphogenic characteristics and tiller structure of Alexandergrass (Urochloaplantaginea (LINK) Hitch) pasture submitted to different nitrogen (N) levels (zero, 150 or 300 kg ha-1 of N). The experimental design was entirely randomized with repeated measures arrangement. The experimental animals were Angus heifers under rotational stocking grazing method. The number of animals was variable to keep 30±5 cm post-grazing sward height. Nitrogen nutrition index increased linearly according N levels (Ŷ = 59.8 + 0.1216N; P < 0.0001; r²=0.53). The leaf appearance rate adjusted to a positive linear regression model according the thermal sum (TS) with zero of N (Ŷ0N = 0.0077 + 0.0000087TS; P = 0.0308; r² = 0.72) and 150 kg ha-1 of N (Ŷ150N = 0.0020 + 0.000021 TS; P = 0.0022; r² = 0.92). The use of 300 kg ha-1 of N did not alter the leaf appearance rate (0.0124 leaf degree-days-1). The use of up to 300 kg ha-1 of N increases the Alexandergrass nitrogen content. The leaf appearance rate in Alexandergrass is modified using N while the morphogenic characteristics leaf expansion, stem expansion, phyllochron, leaf lifespan, leaf elongation duration and tiller structure are not altered by N utilization. RESUMO: Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o índice de nutrição nitrogenada, as características morfogênicas e a estrutura dos perfilhos de papuã (Urochloa plantaginea (LINK) Hitch) submetidos a diferentes níveis de nitrogênio (N) (zero, 150 ou 300 kg ha-1 de N). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com medidas repetidas no tempo. Os animais experimentais foram novilhas Angus em regime de pastejo rotacionado. O número de animais foi variável para manter 30 ± 5 cm de altura do pasto pós-pastejo. O índice de nutrição com nitrogênio aumentou linearmente de acordo com os níveis de N (Ŷ = 59,8 + 0,1216N; P < 0,0001; r² = 0,53). ABSTRACT: Pooled data analysis is an analytical method that combines results from multiple studies. This technique provides a more robust estimate of the effects of an investigation. We performed a database analysis from seventeen experiments developed at Federal University of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, between 1999 and 2017 to characterize individual performance per area and stocking rate with or without supplementation of replacement heifers grazing winter pastures. Data were separated into two groups: with and without energy supplement provision, and into five subgroups based on supplement levels. Heifers from both groups were maintained under similar forage biomass and leaf blade allowance. Statistical analyses were run on R software using a ‘meta’ package. Supplement supply increased average daily gain and gain of body condition scores by 11.1% and 20.0%, respectively. Supplement levels higher than 1.2% of body weight resulted in higher weight gain per area, with the stocking rate increasing with higher supplement levels. RESUMO: Análise conjunta de dados é um método analítico que integra os resultados de muitos estudos. Essa técnica fornece uma estimativa mais robusta sobre os efeitos de uma investigação. Com o objetivo de caracterizar o desempenho individual, por área e a taxa de lotação com uso ou não de suplementos para novilhas de reposição mantidas em pastagem de inverno, foi realizada uma análise de banco de dados de dezessete experimentos conduzidos na Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM), RS, Brasil, entre 1999 e 2017. Os dados foram estratificados em dois grupos: com e sem suplemento energético e cinco subgrupos de acordo com o nível de suplemento. As novilhas de ambos os grupos foram mantidas em similar massa de forragem e oferta de lâminas foliares. As análises estatísticas foram executadas no software R, pacote ‘meta’. RESUMO: A estrutura do dossel e a morfogênese do azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) foram investigadas após a sobressemeadura em Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.) e consorciado com trevo vermelho (Trifolium pratense L.). Os intervalos de tempo entre os cortes foram determinados por diferentes somas térmicas (125, 250, 375 e 500 graus-dia [GD]). Os cortes foram realizados a uma altura equivalente a 50% da altura média do dossel. Os dados morfogênicos e estruturais foram coletados no período de julho a outubro de 2016 e 2017, em um delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso. A altura do dossel, a altura estendida do perfilho, o comprimento do pseudocolmo e a massa de forragem se ajustaram a equações lineares de acordo com a soma térmica. A consorciação de azevém e trevo vermelho foi maior (12,1%) para intervalos de corte mais longos (375 e 500 GD). A taxa de aparecimento foliar (0,0080 folha/GD), filocrono (128,8 GD) e a taxa de senescência (0,10 cm /GD) do azevém não foram diferentes entre os intervalos de corte. A menor taxa de elongação (0,06 cm/GD) e duração de elongação (171,6 GD) foi observada no menor intervalo entre cortes, 125 GD. De acordo com os achados deste experimento de dois anos, recomenda-se o uso de um intervalo de corte de 250 GD entre os eventos de pastejo, levando em consideração a eficiência do uso de forragem, proporção de folhas e colmo de azevém e trevo vermelho no dossel, sob lotação rotativa.

ABSTRACT: The canopy structure and morphogenesis of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) was investigated after it was over seeded with Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.) and intercropped with red clover (Trifolium pratense L.). Time intervals between cuts were determined by different thermal sums (125, 250, 375, and 500 degree-days [DD]). Cuts were conducted at a height equivalent to 50% of the average canopy height. Morphogenic and structural data were collected from July to October of 2016 and 2017, from a completely randomized block experimental design. Canopy height, extended tiller height, pseudostem length, and forage mass were fitted to linear equations according to the thermal sums. Interaction of ryegrass with red clover was the highest (12.1%) for longer cut intervals (375 and 500 DD). The leaf appearance rate (0.0080 leaf/DD), phyllochron value (128.8 DD), and senescence rate (0.10 cm/DD) of ryegrass were comparable between the different intervals. The slowest elongation rate (0.06 cm/DD) with the shortest interval duration between cuts (171.6 DD) was observed in the 125 DD interval. According to the findings from this 2-year experiment, the use of a 250 DD cut interval was recommended between grazing events, taking into account the efficiency of forage use, ryegrass leaf, stem ratio, and interactions with red clover in the canopy under rotational stocking.

RESUMO: Este trabalho foi conduzido com o objetivo de determinar os fluxos de tecidos foliares em diferentes estádios fenológicos do azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), pastejado por cordeiras, manejado sob três níveis de oferta de forragem (6; 9 e 12 kg de MS/100 kg de peso corporal), sob lotação intermitente. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com medidas repetidas no tempo. Os fluxos de crescimento e consumo de lâminas foliares, as eficiências real e potencial de utilização do pasto foram similares nas ofertas de forragem e diferentes nos estádios fenológicos do azevém. O consumo de lâminas foliares em porcentagem do peso corporal foi superior na oferta de forragem 12%. Considerando os fluxos de tecidos foliares, o azevém pode ser manejado com ofertas de forragem que variam entre 6 a 12 kg de MS/100 kg de peso corporal.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to determine the leaf tissue flows in Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), in different phenological stages, grazed by lambs, and managed under three herbage allowances (6, 9 and 12 kg DM/100 kg body weight under rotational stocking method. The experimental design was completely randomized, with repeated measures arrangement. Forage allowances determined similar growth and intake flows, actual and potential utilization efficiencies of grass and they were different in the phenological stages of Italian ryegrass. The intake of leaf blade, as a percentage of body weight, was higher in the 12% herbage allowance. Considering leaf tissue flows, Italian ryegrass can be managed in forage allowances that vary between 6 and 12 kg DM/100 kg body weight.

ABSTRACT. The study was carried out to evaluate defoliation patterns and to quantify leaf tissue flows in Alexandergrass (Urochloa plantaginea (Link.) Hitch) grazed by beef heifers receiving whole rice bran in three levels of supplementation (0, 0.5 and 1 % of body weight). A rotational stocking grazing method and two area replications were utilized. The experimental design was completely randomized following a repeated measure arrangement. The supply of rice bran to heifers grazing Alexandergrass increased the stocking rate by 13%. Regardless of the feeding system, the heifers grazed the expanding leaf blades in the top stratum of the canopy more frequently compared to other types of leaf. Leaf tissue flows, leaf blade intake and grazing intensity have not been changed by supplement fed.

Este estudo foi conduzido para avaliar a intensidade e a frequência de desfolhação de azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) por bezerras de corte exclusivamente em pastejo ou recebendo grão de milho ou produto comercial extrusado com gordura como suplemento. O método de pastejo foi contínuo com número variável de animais. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado com medidas repetidas no tempo, três tratamentos e duas repetições por área. O filocrono do azevém foi de 140,1 e 303,4°GD folha-1 a duração de vida da folha. A intensidade (67,0%) e a frequência de desfolha (6,4 dias) foram semelhantes, independente do fornecimento ou não de suplemento energético para as bezerras em pastejo. A frequência de desfolhação indica que os animais podem retornar cerca de 3,3 vezes ao mesmo perfilho durante a duração de vida de uma folha. Considerando as diferentes categorias de lâminas foliares, o fornecimento de gordura extrusada faz com que as bezerras removam maior proporção (66,5%) de lâminas foliares em expansão. Em pastagem de azevém, a eficiência de uso da forragem não é modificada quando as bezerras de corte recebem suplemento energético.

ABSTRACT. The intensity and frequency of defoliation of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) by beef heifers exclusively grazing or receiving corn grain or extruded commercial product with fat as supplement were evaluated. The grazing method was put-and-take stocking. The experimental design was completely randomized following a repeated measure arrangement, three treatments and two area replications. The phyllochron of ryegrass was 140.1 and 303.4°GD the leaf lifespan. The intensity (67.0 %) and the frequency of defoliation (6.4 days) were similar, regardless of supply or no of energetic supplement for grazing heifers. The defoliation frequency indicates that the heifers can return about 3.3 times to the same tiller during the leaf lifespan. Considering the different categories of leaf blades, the supply of extruded fat causes the heifers to remove higher proportion (66.5 %) of expanding leaf blades. On ryegrass pasture, the efficiency of forage use is not modified when heifers receive energetic supplement.

RESUMO. Objetivou-se estudar a morfogênese e a estrutura do Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.) cultivado em clima subtropical e adubado com nitrogênio (N). O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado com quatro níveis de N (Zero; 75; 150 e 225 kg ha-1) em nove repetições por área. Os animais experimentais foram borregas das raças Suffolk. O método de pastejo foi o contínuo para manter a altura do dossel em 15 cm ± 10%. A taxa de expansão de colmos aumenta 0,000027 cm graus-dia-1 para cada kg de N aplicado (modelo linear). De acordo com o modelo não linear, o maior valor de taxa de expansão (0,0226 cm graus-dia-1) foi observado com 220,1 kg ha-1 de N. A duração de vida das folhas ajustou-se ao modelo de regressão linear, com aumento de 50 graus-dia folha-1 comparando-se às doses de 0 e 225 kg ha-1 de N. Conforme o modelo não linear, o maior valor de duração de vida da folha (407,1 graus-dia) foi atingido com 208,8 kg ha-1 de N. Com a manutenção da altura do dossel em aproximadamente 15 cm de altura, recomenda-se utilizar 200 kg ha-1 de N em Tifton 85 cultivado em clima subtropical.

ABSTRACT. The experiment evaluated the morphogenesis and structure of Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.) cultivated in subtropical climate and fertilized with nitrogen (N). The experiment was a completely randomized design with four levels of N (Zero; 75; 150 or 225 kg ha-1) in nine replicates per area. The experimental animals were Suffolk female lambs. The grazing method was continuous to maintain the sward height at 15 cm ± 10%. The stem expansion increased by 0.000027 cm degree-days-1 to each kg N applied (linear model). According to nonlinear model, the highest stem expansion (0.0226 cm degree-days-1) was observed with the use 220.1 kg ha-1 N. The leaf lifespan fitted a linear regression model, with increase of 50 degree-days leaf -1, comparing the levels zero and 225 kg ha-1 of N. According to nonlinear regression model, the longest leaf lifespan (407.1 degree-days) was observed with the use 208.8 kg ha-1 N. With the maintenance of sward height at approximately 15 cm, we recommended to use 200 kg ha-1 N in Tifton 85 cultivated in subtropical climate.

RESUMO O desempenho produtivo e reprodutivo de novilhas de corte em pastejo de azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) foi analisado com animais exclusivamente em pastejo ou suplementados com gordura extrusada (0,15 ou 0,30% do peso corporal). O método de pastejo foi contínuo com taxa de lotação variável. O delineamento experimental foi completamente casualisado com medidas repetidas no tempo. As variáveis relacionadas ao pasto foram semelhantes quando as novilhas receberam diferentes níveis de suplemento, assegurando similares condições a esses animais. Os valores médios de massa de forragem e altura do dossel foram 1.500 kg MS ha-1 e 17 cm, respectivamente. Novilhas ingeriram forragem com semelhante teor de proteína bruta (21,9%) e fibra em detergente neutro (49,3%), independente do nível de suplemento. Novilhas de corte suplementadas com gordura extrusada, independente do nível, têm maior ganho médio diário, peso corporal, escore de condição corporal, relação peso corporal: altura do que novilhas exclusivamente em pastejo. O uso de gordura extrusada não causa mudança na área pélvica e no escore de trato reprodutivo de novilhas de corte. Independente do estado nutricional imposto às novilhas, essas não são capazes de conceber durante a estação de acasalamento em 14/15 meses de idade.

ABSTRACT Productive and reproductive performance of beef heifers grazing on Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) were analyzed, comprising animals exclusively on pasture and supplemented animals with extruded fat (0.15 or 0.30% of body weight). The grazing method was continuous with variable stocking rate. The experimental design was completely randomized following a repeated measure arrangement. Variables related to pasture were similar when the heifers received different supplementation levels, with similar grazing conditions. Mean values of forage mass and canopy height were 1,500 kg DM ha-1 and 17 cm, respectively. Heifers ingested forage with a similar content of crude protein (21.90%) and neutral detergent fiber (49.30%), regardless of supplementation levels. Beef heifers supplemented with extruded fat, regardless of the level, had higher average daily gain, body weight, body condition score, body weight: height ratio than heifers fed exclusively on pasture. The use of extruded fat as a supplement caused no change in pelvic area and reproductive tract score in beef heifers. Regardless of their nutritional status, 14/15-month-old heifers were not able to conceive during the mating season.

RESUMO Foi realizada uma análise conjunta de dados, com o objetivo de caracterizar a taxa de ingestão de forragem e os padrões de uso do tempo por novilhas em pastejo de forrageiras de estação fria. Essas novilhas recebiam ou não suplemento energético nos diferentes estádios fenológicos do pasto (vegetativo, pré-florescimento e florescimento). Os experimentos envolveram 360 novilhas, com idade inicial de oito meses e peso corporal médio de 145 ± 17 kg. O método de pastejo foi o de lotação contínua, com número variável de animais. Novilhas recebendo suplemento consumiram 17,0% a menos de forragem e 22,2% a menos de lâminas foliares que as novilhas exclusivamente em pastejo. A atividade de pastejo foi concentrada no turno da tarde, independente do sistema alimentar e dos estádios fenológicos avaliados, e no turno da noite acontece o evento mais longo de ruminação. A taxa de ingestão de forragem é semelhante, independente do consumo de suplemento e dos estádios fenológicos dos pastos.

ABSTRACT A joint data analysis was performed to characterize forage intake rate and patterns of use of time by grazing heifers in cold season pastures. Heifers received or not energetic supplementation at different phenological stages of grasses (vegetative, pre-flowering and flowering). Experiments involved 360 heifers with initial age of eight months and average body weight of 145 ± 17 kg, on continuous grazing method and variable number of animals. Supplementaed heifers consumed 17.0% less forage and 22.2% less leaf blades than heifers exclusively on pasture. Grazing activity was concentrated in the afternoon shift, regardless of the feeding system and phenological stages evaluated, with the longest event of rumination during the night. Forage intake rate is similar, regardless of supplement intake and phenological stages of grasses.

RESUMO. Este experimento foi realizado para mensurar a ingestão de forragem por cordeiras, em pastagem de azevém, utilizando o óxido de cromo e o teor de nitrogênio fecal. A pastagem foi manejada sob distintas ofertas de forragem (OF): 6, 9 e 12% do PC. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com estrutura de parcelas sub subdivididas, sendo as ofertas de forragem as parcelas principais, os estádios fenológicos, as subparcelas e os métodos de determinação da ingestão as sub sub-parcelas. A ingestão nos estádios vegetativo do azevém independe da oferta de forragem. As menores ofertas limitam a ingestão de forragem a partir do pré-florescimento enquanto no estádio reprodutivo do azevém a ingestão é menor na OF6, intermediária na OF9 e maior OF12. A estimativa da ingestão de matéria orgânica por cordeiras em pastagem de azevém é similar quando são utilizados o óxido de cromo e o nitrogênio fecal como marcadores. A ingestão de forragem em função das ofertas de forragem é dependente da estrutura do dossel e é limitada no final do ciclo do pasto em função da elevada massa de colmos.

ABSTRACT. This study was conducted to evaluate the use of chromium oxide and the content of fecal nitrogen to estimate forage intake by female lambs on Italian ryegrass pasture. The pasture was managed under different forage allowances (FA): 6, 9 and 12% BW. The experiment was a randomized split-split plot design, in which the forage allowances were considered as main plots, the phenological stages as subplots and methods to determine intake as sub-subplots. Forage intake, in the ryegrass vegetative stage, is independent of forage allowance. Lower allowances limit forage intake from the pre-flowering stage, while at the reproductive stage, intake was lower in FA6, intermediate in FA9 and higher in FA12. The estimation of organic matter intake by lambs on Italian ryegrass is similar when chromium oxide and fecal nitrogen are used as markers. The forage intake according to forage allowances depends on the sward structure and is limited by high stem mass at the end of the phenological cycle.

Foram avaliadas as variáveis morfogênicas, estruturais e os fluxos de tecidos foliares de azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) sob duas taxas de lotação: 'Baixa' e 'Alta'. Essas taxas foram determinadas por bezerras, exclusivamente em pastejo ou em pastejo e recebendo grão de milho como suplemento. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com medidas repetidas no tempo com duas taxas de lotação, duas e quatro repetições de área para a taxa de lotação 'Baixa' e 'Alta', respectivamente. As variáveis morfogênicas do azevém, o número de folhas verdes e a densidade de perfilhos foram similares em ambas as taxas de lotação. A taxa de senescência foliar foi superior na taxa de lotação 'Baixa'. As bezerras pastejaram com intensidade e frequência similar em ambas as taxas de lotação. O aumento de 33,6% na taxa de lotação ocasionado pelo uso de suplemento para bezerras em pastejo não altera os fluxos de biomassa do azevém, mas altera a sua eficiência potencial de utilização próximo ao estádio reprodutivo da planta.

Morphogenetic, structural variables and leaf biomass flows of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) were evaluated under two stocking rates: 'Low' and 'High'. These rates were determined by heifers exclusively on pasture or on pasture and supplemented with corn grain. The experimental design was completely randomized following a repeated measure arrangement, two stocking rates, two and four replications of area for the stocking rates 'low' and 'high', respectively. The morphogenetic variables, the number of green leaves and tiller density were similar in both stocking rates. Leaf senescence rate was higher with low stocking rate. Heifers grazed with similar intensity and frequency in both stocking rates. The increase by 33.6% in the stocking rate caused by the use of supplement does not change the leaf biomass flow of Italian ryegrass, but alters its potential efficiency of use near the reproductive stage of the plant.

Foi avaliado o efeito de diferentes frequências de suplementação sobre o uso da pastagem (fluxo de tecido foliar, intensidade e frequência de desfolhação) em papuã (Urochloa plantaginea (Link) Hitch). As bezerras de corte permaneceram exclusivamente em pastejo ou receberam grão inteiro de aveia durante sete ou cinco dias por semana (de segunda à sexta feira). A quantidade semanal de suplemento foi similar nas duas frequências. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com medidas repetidas no tempo, três tratamentos e duas repetições de área. Os fluxos de tecidos, a frequência e intensidade de desfolhação são similares quando as bezerras permanecem exclusivamente em pastejo ou recebem grão de aveia em diferentes frequências.

The effects of several supplementation frequencies on forage use (leaf tissue flow, intensity and frequency of defoliation) in Alexandergrass (Urochloa plantaginea (Link) Hitch) were evaluated. The heifers remained exclusively on pasture or received whole oat grain seven days/week or five days/week (Monday to Friday). The weekly amount of supplement was similar for both frequencies. The experimental design was completely randomized following a repeated measure arrangement, with three treatments and two area replications. Leaf tissue flow, frequency and intensity of defoliation are similar when heifers remain exclusively on Alexandergrass pasture or receive oat grain on different frequencies.

Este trabalho foi conduzido com o objetivo de gerar informações sobre o processo de perfilhamento e contribuir para com o entendimento do processo de desfolhação do azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) utilizado por cordeiras, submetidas a diferentes ofertas de forragem: 6; 8 e 12 kg de MS 100-1 kg de peso corporal. O método de pastejo foi intermitente. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com medidas repetidas no tempo, três tratamentos e duas repetições de área. A intensidade de desfolhação é superior nas ofertas de forragem 6 e 9%. O intervalo entre desfolhações foi superior na oferta de forragem 12%, intermediária na oferta 9% e inferior na oferta 6%. As taxas de aparecimento, sobrevivência e mortalidade de perfilhos e o índice de estabilidade da população de perfilhos são similares nas ofertas de forragem e variam nos estádios fenológicos do azevém. Mudanças estruturais do dossel causadas pelo manejo com baixas ofertas de forragem e/ou pelo avanço do estádio fenológico do azevém alteram as estratégias de desfolhação, com pastejo realizado de forma mais intensa e frequente.

This work was carried out in order to generate information on the tillering process and to contribute for the understanding of the defoliation process on Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) grazed by lambs under different herbage allowances: 6, 8 and 12 kg of dry matter per 100 kg of animal live weight per day. The grazing method was intermittent. The experimental design was completely randomized following a repeated measure arrangement, with three treatments and two area replications. The intensity of defoliation is greater at 6 and 9% herbage allowances. The defoliation interval is higher at 12% herbage allowance, intermediate at 9% and lower at 6%. The rates of tiller emergence, survival and death, stability index the tiller population are similar for the different herbage allowances and differ according to the phenological stage of ryegrass. Structural changes caused by canopy management with low herbage allowance and/or due to the advance in developmental stage of ryegrass alter defoliation strategies, with more intense and frequent grazing.

Foi avaliada a dinâmica de perfilhamento de azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam), sob duas taxas de lotação: 'baixa' e 'alta'. Essas taxas foram determinadas por bezerras, exclusivamente, em pastejo ou em pastejo e recebendo grão de milho ou de aveia branca como suplemento. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com medidas repetidas no tempo, com duas taxas de lotação, três e seis repetições de área para a taxa de lotação 'baixa' e 'alta', respectivamente. A taxa de aparecimento (1,0 perfilhos perfilho-1 m-2), sobrevivência de perfilhos (0,8 perfilhos perfilho-1 m-2), o índice de estabilidade da população (1,6) e a ocupação de sítios (0,3) foram similares nas taxas de lotação 'alta' e 'baixa'. A densidade populacional de perfilhos foi similar nas diferentes taxas de lotação. A primeira geração de perfilhos representa 56% dos perfilhos existentes no final do ciclo do azevém. O aumento de 22,5% na taxa de lotação ocasionado pelo uso de suplementos para bezerras em pastejo não altera a dinâmica de perfilhamento do azevém.

This study investigated the tiller dynamics of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) under low and high stocking rates. These rates were determined by heifers exclusively on pasture or grazing and supplemented with oats and corn grain. The experimental design was completely randomized with repeated measurements over time, with two stocking rates, three and six replications of area for low and high stocking rates, respectively. The appearance rate (1.0 tillers tiller-1 m-2), survival rate (0.8 tillers tiller-1 m-2), population stability index (1.6) and site occupation (0.3) were similar for high and low stocking rates. The tiller density was similar for different stocking rates. The first generation of tillers was 56% of the tiller population at end of the ryegrass cycle. The increase by 22.5% in the stocking rate derived from the use of supplements for grazing heifers did not alter the tiller dynamics of ryegrass.

O consumo de forragem foi avaliado em novilhas de corte exclusivamente em pastagem de azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) ou recebendo farelo de arroz integral (FAI) com ou sem adição de ionóforo. Foi usado o óxido de cromo como indicador da produção fecal. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, com medidas repetidas no tempo, com três tratamentos e três repetições de área. Os animais foram considerados as unidades experimentais nas avaliações de consumo. O consumo de pasto pelas novilhas foi similar nos diferentes sistemas alimentares, ocasionando taxa de lotação semelhante. O fornecimento de farelo de arroz integral, com ou sem monensina, aumenta o consumo de matéria seca total. A adição de ionóforo ao FAI aumenta o desempenho individual das novilhas, sendo o seu uso recomendado quando existe o objetivo de reduzir a sua idade ao primeiro acasalamento.

The forage intake was evaluated in beef heifers exclusively in Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) pasture or receiving rice bran with or without addition of ionophore. Chromic oxide was used as a fecal production indicator. The experimental design was completely randomized with repeated measures on time, three treatments and three area replicates. The animals were considered experimental units for intake evaluations. The pasture intake by heifers was similar at different feeding systems causing similar stocking rate. The supply of rice bran with or without monensin increased the total dry matter intake. The individual heifers performance was increased with ionophore addition to rice bran. Ionophore is recommended when there is a goal to reduce the age of beef heifers at their first mating.
