Abstract The meshless element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) is used to solve partial differential equations responsible for obtaining the electromagnetic fields generated by a transmission line. For this purpose, a 2D model based in a real transmission line is constructed and simulated. The results obtained by EFGM have good accuracy and they are compared against analytical solution and Finite Element Method in order to verify the effectiveness, advantages and disadvantages of the method.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a ocorrência de EGUS e quantificar os níveis séricos de gastrina em cavalos de hipismo durante a época de competições e o período de férias. Quarenta cavalos de hipismo de alta performance foram aleatoriamente distribuídos em dois grupos, grupo treinamento: vinte cavalos de hipismo submetidos a treinamento intenso e participando de competições, e grupo descanso: vinte cavalos de hipismo em férias (período de descanso). As avaliações gastroscópicas e as coletas de sangue dos cavalos em treinamento foram realizadas um ou dois dias após as competições, enquanto nos cavalos do grupo descanso foram realizadas após quatro semanas de repouso. Os níveis séricos de gastrina foram mensurados por kit de ELISA, em dois momentos: antes da alimentação e duas horas após. Os dados de escore das lesões gástricas foram comparados pela prova U de Mann-Whitney (α= 0,05) e os valores médios de gastrina foram comparados entre os grupos e entre os dois momentos pelos testes t e t pareado, respectivamente (α= 0,05). Foram encontradas úlceras gástricas em 42,5% de todos os cavalos examinados, independentemente do período de competições ou repouso. Os níveis séricos de gastrina foram significativamente maiores no grupo treinamento, sem diferença entre os períodos pré e pós-alimentação.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of EGUS and to quantify serum gastrin levels in jumping horses during competition season and interseason period. Forty jumping horses, competing at high level were randomly allocated into two groups, the Training Group: twenty jumping horses undergoing intense training and participating in competitions, and the Rest Group: twenty jumping horses in the interseason (resting period). The gastroscopic examinations and blood samples of the horses in the training group were performed 1-2 days following the competition while in the horses of the rest group, following 4 weeks of rest. The serum gastrin levels were measured at two different times: pre-feeding and two hours after feeding the horses (postprandial) by ELISA kit. Gastric lesion score data were compared by the Mann-Whitney U test (α= 0.05) and the mean gastrin values were compared between the groups and between the two moments by the paired tet tests, respectively (α= 0, 05). Squamous gastric ulcers were detected in 42.5% of all jumping horses examined independent of the period, competition season or interseason. Serum gastrin levels were significantly higher in the Training Group with no difference between pre-feeding and postprandial values.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the mechanical properties of porous alumina ceramics, using the rice husk as a porogenic element. The rice husk was milled and graded in two granulometry, <65 μm and 65-150 μm, and added in a high purity calcined alumina in the proportion of 5, 15 and 30 wt%. The samples were pressed by uniaxial pressing and sintered at 1450 ºC for 1 h. Sintered density, total porosity, Young’s modulus, modulus of rupture, and compressive strength were evaluated. Samples were also prepared without the addition of rice husk (RH) in order to compare the properties. Porous ceramics with total porosity ranging from 24% to 54% were produced, and with the composition of 5% RH 65-150 μm, a high porosity value was obtained for a lower loss in mechanical properties.

RESUMO O objetivo principal deste trabalho é caracterizar o comportamento mecânico dos concretos autoadensáveis (CAA), tendo em vista a não linearidade física e os fundamentos da mecânica da fratura para materiais parcialmente frágeis. Neste trabalho busca-se a determinação da energia de fratura e do comprimento da Zona de Processo de Fratura, além do módulo de elasticidade, da resistência à tração e à compressão. Para tanto, foi realizada uma série de testes constando vigas de CAA submetidas à flexão de três pontos e vigas de concretos convencionais vibrados (CCV), com entalhe no meio do vão, sendo que os parâmetros dos corpos-de-prova de CCV serviram como referência comparativa. Foram considerados com dois níveis de resistência à compressão (30 e 50 MPa), duas composições granulométrica (granulometria fina e granulometria grossa) e dois diâmetros máximo do agregado (12 e 20 mm). A avaliação da influência destas variáveis no comportamento mecânico do CAA foi feita a partir da dosagem de quatro tipos de concretos obtidos pela combinação das variáveis mencionadas. Os ensaios de flexão foram feitos de acordo com a recomendação do RILEM TC 89-FMT, que se baseia no Método do Efeito de Tamanho.

ABSTRACT Considering the physical nonlinearity of concrete and the fundamentals of fracture mechanics for quasi-brittle materials, the objective of this study was to determine the fracture energy and the length of the fracture process zone (FPZ) as well as the modulus of elasticity, the tensile strength and the compressive strength of self-compacting concrete (SCC) to characterize its mechanical behavior. A series of tests, including a three-point bending test of SCC and conventional vibrated concrete (CVC) specimens, with a notch at mid-span, and tensile and compressive tests were performed. The mechanical parameters obtained from the CVC specimens were considered as a comparative reference. The effect of the following variables was evaluated and considered at two levels: compressive strength (30 and 50 MPa), granular composition (fine and coarse particle size) and maximum diameter of the aggregate (12 and 20 mm). The effect of these variables on the mechanical behaviors of the SCC specimens was evaluated based on the test results of specimens of four types of concrete, which were obtained from the combination of the variables. The bending tests were performed according to the RILEM TC 89-FMT recommendations, which are based on the size-effect method.

RESUMO O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a concepção de liberdade encontrada em "Discourses concerning government" de Algernon Sidney. Mantendo a perspectiva republicana, a liberdade é definida pela ausência de dominação, ou seja, pela não submissão, sujeição ou exposição à vontade arbitrária de outra pessoa; e assumindo a perspectiva jusnaturalista, a liberdade é considerada um direito natural, inerente à condição humana, que deve ser preservado e assegurado pela autoridade política. Pretende-se discutir como Sidney articula essas duas perspectivas em sua teoria política, projetando a concepção republicana de liberdade na modernidade.

ABSTRACT The objective of this paper is to analyze the concept of freedom found in Algernon Sidney’s "Discourses Concerning government". Keeping the republican thought, freedom is defined by the absence of domination, i.e., the denial of submission, bondage or exposure to the arbitrary will of another person; and taking the jusnaturalist thought, freedom is considered a natural right inherent to the human condition, which must be preserved and guaranteed by the political authority. I intend to discuss how Sidney articulates these two perspectives in his political theory, outlining the republican conception of freedom in modernity.

Resumo O presente artigo apresenta o uso da técnica de correlação de imagem digital para a obtenção do módulo de elasticidade do concreto. O sistema proposto utiliza um microscópio USB que capta as imagens a uma taxa de 5 quadros por segundo. Posteriormente, os dados armazenados são compatibilizados com as cargas aplicadas e a curva tensão-deformação é gerada para determinação do módulo de elasticidade longitudinal do concreto à compressão. Dois concretos distintos foram produzidos e ensaiados utilizando o sistema proposto. Os resultados foram comparados com os obtidos com a metodologia tradicional, que utiliza Clips Gauges. Foi observada uma diferença na faixa de 4% entre os dois métodos, sendo que essa diferença depende de alguns parâmetros no caso dos resultados do DIC, a distância focal e a resolução do vídeo, indicando que a técnica de correlação de imagem digital pode ser utilizada para a obtenção de propriedades mecânicas do concreto.

Abstract This paper presents the use of the technique of digital image correlation for obtaining the elasticity modulus of concrete. The proposed system uses a USB microscope that captures images at a rate of five frames per second. The stored data are correlated with the applied loads, and a stress-strain curve is generated to determine the concrete compressive modulus of elasticity. Two different concretes were produced and tested using the proposed system. The results were compared with the results obtained using a traditional strain gauge. It was observed a difference in the range of 4% between the two methods, wherein this difference depends on some parameters in the case of the DIC results, as focal length and a video capture resolution, indicating that DIC technique can be used to obtain mechanical properties of concrete.

O efeito de escala é uma questão relevante em estruturas de concreto, uma vez que influencia vários aspectos de análise, principalmente aspectos correlacionados com a resistência, fragilidade e ductilidade estrutural, energia e tenacidade à fratura, dentre outros. Além disto, cada vez mais, novas metodologias estão sendo desenvolvidas para avaliar campos de deslocamentos em estruturas. Neste trabalho uma avaliação experimental do efeito de escala é realizada, utilizando como ferramenta de medida a correlação de imagem digital (CID). Vigas de concreto, com três tamanhos distintos e com entalhes no meio do vão, foram ensaiadas por meio do esquema de flexão em três pontos. Os resultados encontrados permitem um melhor entendimento do efeito de escala e demonstram a eficiência da correlação de imagem digital na obtenção de medidas de deslocamentos.

Size effect is an important issue in concrete structures bearing in mind that it can influence many aspects of analysis such as strength, brittleness and structural ductility, fracture toughness and fracture energy, among others. Further this, ever more new methods are being developed to evaluate displacement fields in structures. In this paper an experimental evaluation of the size effect is performed applying Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique to measure displacements on the surface of beams. Three point bending tests were performed on three different size concrete beams with a notch at the midspan. The results allow a better understanding of the size effect and demonstrate the efficiency of Digital Image Correlation to obtain measures of displacements.

A tenacidade à fratura, K IC, é uma importante propriedade dos materiais cerâmicos, pois ela mede a resistência ao início da propagação de trinca. O problema é selecionar o método adequado para determinar K IC, já que existem vários, cada um com suas particularidades. Por comodidade, escolhe-se o método da indentação, IF, que apresenta certos inconvenientes, principalmente para cerâmicas porosas, Sendo o método mais adequado, o SEVNB. Nesse trabalho são mostrados resultados de K IC para três materiais: carbeto de silício (SiC), alumina (Al2O3) e um a base de argila, uma telha cerâmica. Os resultados mostraram que os valores de K IC são maiores quando é utilizado o método IF, sendo que quanto mais porosa é a cerâmica mais difícil é a aplicação desse método, e que o método SEVNB, pode ser aplicado com êxito. Os resultados de K IC, medidos pelo método SEVNB são 3,8 MPa.m½, 2,5 MPa.m½ e 0,4 MPa.m½ para SiC, Al2O3 e telha, respectivamente.

Fracture toughness, K IC, which measuresthe resistance tocrack propagation initiation of a pre-cracked body, is oneof the most importantpropertiesof ceramic materials. Normally, for convenience, the indentationmethod is chosen. It is the IF (Indentation Fracture) method, which measures the cracksizeat the verticesof the indentation. However, that methodhas many drawbacks, especially ifthe ceramic material isporous, since itisvery difficulttoidentify the extent of the propagated crack. Themost suitable methodformeasuring fracture toughnessis the SEVNB(Single Edge V NotchBeam). This paper describesK ICresultsfor threedifferent materials: silicon carbide, SiC, alumina, Al2O3, and a clay based ceramics, ceramic tile, with distinctporosities.The results indicate that thevalues of K ICare higherwhen theIF method is used, and the moreporous theceramicsis,the more difficult it is to applythis method. On the other hand, the SEVNB method, regardless porosity, can be applied successfully.The K ICvaluesmeasuredby the SEVNBmethodwere3.8 MPa.m½, 2.5 MPa.m½ and0.4 MPa.m½forSiC, Al2O3and ceramic tile, respectively.

Estudou-se a eficácia do uso tópico de um produto comercial constituído por uma associação fitoterápica como promotor da cicatrização de feridas induzidas em equinos. Uma lesão cutânea em forma de quadrado, com 5cm de lado, foi produzida cirurgicamente em ambos os lados da região glútea de oito cavalos adultos. Aleatoriamente um dos lados foi escolhido como tratado, permanecendo o contralateral como controle. As lesões do lado controle foram lavadas com água e detergente neutro e, no lado tratado, foi realizado o mesmo procedimento, seguido de aplicação tópica da associação fitoterápica. As evoluções macroscópica e microscópica do processo cicatricial foram avaliadas, e a área de cada ferida determinada no decorrer do período experimental. Foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre os lados em relação aos valores de área das feridas. Na última avaliação, o lado controle apresentou valor médio de área de 0,70cm², e o lado tratado de 1,23cm². A contração cicatricial observada em 77 dias de evolução cicatricial foi de 97,57% para o lado controle e de 95,59% para o lado tratado.

The efficiency of the topical use of a commercial product constituted by a herbal combination on the healing evolution of equine induced wounds was studied. A skin lesion in the shape of a square with 5cm sides was surgically produced on both sides of the buttocks of eight adult horses. One side was considered control and another one treated. Both control and treated sides were rinsed with water and neutral soap. Additionally, the wound on the treated side received the topical treatment with the herbal combination. Macroscopic and microscopic healing evolution of the wounds was evaluated and their areas were determined during the experimental period. There was statistical difference between wound areas. At the last evaluation, the average area of the control side was 0.70cm² and of the treated side was 1.23cm². The contraction of scar observed at 77 days was 97.57% for the control side and 95.59% for the treated side.

Avaliaram-se, durante 60 minutos, 10 bovinos após administração intravenosa de 0,1mg.kg-1 de xilazina ou 10μg.kg-1 de detomidina, quanto às frequências cardíaca e respiratória, movimentos ruminais, pressão arterial média, temperatura retal e respostas comportamentais como ataxia ou decúbito, ptose palpebral, estado de alerta ou sedação e redução da altura da cabeça em relação ao solo, além da presença de salivação, micção e concentração sanguínea de glicose. Observou-se que a xilazina, via intravenosa, em bovinos, ao mesmo tempo que promove sedação mais intensa e prolongada que a detomidina, induz a uma maior quantidade de efeitos indesejáveis, como salivação e decúbito, e redução das frequências cardíaca e respiratória, da pressão arterial média, da motilidade ruminal e da temperatura, sendo estas alterações mais prolongadas. Conclui-se que a detomidina pode ser utilizada com segurança em bovinos na dose de 10μg.kg-1, promovendo sedação e permanência do animal em posição quadrupedal.

Ten bovine were evaluated after intravenous injection of 0,1mg.kg-1 of xylazine or 10μg.kg-1 of detomidine during 60 minutes for heart and respiratory rate, ruminal motility, mean arterial pressure, rectal temperature and behavioral responses like ataxia or recumbency, palpebral ptoses, state of sedation or alert and head drop, besides the measurement of salivation, urination and blood glucose concentration. It was observed that intravenous xylazine in bovine promotes more intense and prolonged sedation than detomidine, and at the same time induces a larger and more prolonged quantity of unwanted side effects such as salivation, recumbency, decrease of cardiac and respiratory rate, mean arterial pressure, ruminal motility and temperature. We concluded that detomidine can be used safely in bovines at 10μg.kg-1 dose, promoting sedation with standing position.

The immobilization of Aspergillus oryzae β-galactosidase was achieved by entrapment in sodium alginate and gelatin and cross-linking with glutaraldehyde. The optimal concentrations of the aforementioned variables in the immobilization process were determined using an orthogonal central composite design with an orthogonal axial value of 1.35313. The concentrations of alginate, gelatin and glutaraldehyde that provided the greatest enzymatic activity were 6.60%, 4.05% and 3.64% (w/v), respectively. The stability of the immobilized enzyme under the optimal conditions was evaluated through daily activity assays. After 25 uses, a 20% decrease in the enzymatic activity was observed, indicating that the immobilization process could be used to produce a stable biocatalyst. This study investigates the influence of lactose and product concentrations on kinetic reaction hydrolysis. The concentration ranges for the studied variables were 10 to 56 g/L for lactose and 0 to 11.5 g/L for glucose and galactose. Only galactose presented a competitive inhibitory effect.

Introduction and objective: During pregnancy, hormonal change, increase in the body mass index and the pressure caused by the enlarged uterus over the bladder and pelvic floor, are some factors involved in lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). This study was made to evaluate the correlation between pregnancy and delivery way with LUTS. Material and method: This open prospective study was carried out using the overactive bladder questionnaire short form (OABq-SF). A total of 60 patients enrolled this study. The mean age was 24 year, raging from 14 to 40 years. The patients were evaluated during the third trimester and 6 months after delivery. Statistical analysis of the OABq-SF scores was made using the Pearson method. Results: Mean OABq-SF score during pregnancy was 35.2 and 6 months after delivery decreased to15. Quality of life was 82.9 during pregnancy and increased to 88.4 at 6 month after delivery. Patient's perception, that is correlation, was 55.02 (p=0.0001) during pregnancy and 36.1% (p=0.0046). Clinical correlation index was 6.7%. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that in spite of LUTS being more important during pregnancy, there is no significant clinical correlation in patient's perception.

Introducción y objetivo: Los síntomas del tracto urinario bajo durante la gravidez pueden ser influenciados por factores, como adaptaciones hormonales, aumento de peso corporal y sobrecarga de presión por el útero grávido sobre la vejiga y el suelo pélvico. La propuesta fue evaluar la correlación de esos síntomas con la calidad de vida en las fases gestacional y puerperal. Material y método: Estudio prospectivo utilizando el Overactive Bladder Questionnaire Short Form (OABq-SF). Participaron 60 gestantes, edad media de 24 años (14-40), evaluadas durante el último trimestre gestacional y revaluadas 6 meses después del parto. El análisis estadístico correlacionó historia obstétrica, síntomas miccionales y calidad de vida con el método Spearman, utilizando el método de Pearson para la correlación del score de OABq-SF. Resultados: La media del score del OABq-SF durante la gravidez fue de 35,2, en tanto que 6 meses después del parto declinó a 15,0. Para la calidad de vida se verificó una media de 82,9 durante la gravidez y de 88,4 6 meses después del parto. La percepción de las pacientes fue del 55,02% (p=0,0001) durante la gravidez y del 36,01% (p=0,0046) durante el puerperio. La correlación clínica fue del 6,7%. Conclusión: Nuestro estudio demostró que a pesar de que los síntomas del tracto urinario bajo se encuentran presentes durante la gravidez, no hay correlación clínica en la percepción de las gestantes.

Handroanthus serratifolius produz flores durante a estação seca no bioma Cerrado, e pode ser um importante recurso alimentar para algumas aves. Para espécies de Psittacidae, como Forpus xanthopterygius, flores são importantes itens na sua dieta. Este estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar o comportamento de F.xanthopterygius e avaliar o dano à floração e reprodução de H. serratifolius. Quatro indivíduos de H. serratifolius foram observados durante 60 horas para registrar: tamanho de grupo, tempo e duração de visitas, e o número de flores predadas por F.xanthopterygius. Os grupos que visitaram as plantas tinham de dois a 12 indivíduos. As visitas duraram, em média, 60,31 minutos (±22,29). O tamanho do grupo foi correlacionado ao número predado de flores e foi influenciado pelo número de flores oferecidas. Durante a floração, cada indivíduo de H. serratifolius perdeu aproximadamente 1052 flores por semana.

Handroanthus serratifolius produces flowers during the dry season in the Cerrado biome, and it may be an important food source to some bird species. For Psittacidae species, like Forpus xanthopterygius, flowers are important in their diet. This study intended to characterize the behavior of F.xanthopterygius and evaluate the damage to the flowering and in the reproduction of H. serratifolius. Four individuals of H. serratifolius were observed for 60 hours to register size of groups, the time and duration of visit, and the number of flowers predated by F.xanthopterygius. The groups that visited the plants had between 2 and 12 individuals. The mean time of visits was 60.31 minutes (±22.29). The size of groups was correlated to number of flowers predated and was influenced by number of flowers offered. During the flowering, each H. serratifolius individual loses approximately 1,052 flowers per week.

Two non-singular boundary element method (BEM) algorithms for two-dimensional potential problems have been implemented using isoparametric quadratic, cubic and quartic elements. The first one is based on the self-regular potential boundary integral equation (BIE) and the second on the self-regular flux-BIE. The flux-BIE requires the C1,α continuity of the density functions, which is not satisfied by the standard isoparametric elements. This requirement is remedied by adopting the relaxed continuity strategy. The self-regular flux-BIE has presented some poor and oscillatory results, mainly with continuous quadratic elements. This odd behavior has completely disappeared when discontinuous elements, which satisfy the continuity requirement, were applied, and this suggests that the 'relaxed continuity hypothesis' seems to be the main cause of numerical errors in the implementation of the self-regular flux-BIE. On the other side, the potential algorithm has shown very reliable solutions.

Estudou-se a eficácia do uso tópico de ketanserina como promotor da cicatrização de feridas cutâneas induzidas em equinos. As feridas foram produzidas em ambos os metâmeros na região da garupa de oito cavalos adultos, em formato quadrangular, medindo cinco centímetros de lado. Aleatoriamente um dos metâmeros foi escolhido como tratado, permanecendo o contralateral como controle. As lesões do grupocontrole foram lavadas somente com água e detergente neutro e no grupo tratado foi realizado o mesmo procedimento seguido de aplicação tópica de ketanserina. A evolução macroscópica e microscópica do processo cicatricial foi avaliada e a área de cada ferida determinada no decorrer do período experimental. Não foram verificadas diferenças significativas entre as feridas do grupo-controle e do grupo tratado com ketanserina durante 56 dias de avaliação.

The efficiency of topical use of kentaserin on healing evolution of induced skin wounds in horses was studied. The experimental surgical wounds were made in both sides of the croup of eight adult horses. The wounds were square-shaped measuring 5cm of each side. One side was considered control and the opposite one treated. Both control and treated animals were rinsed with water and neutral soap. Additionally, the wound on the treated horses received the topical treatment with ketanserin. Macroscopic and microscopic healing evolution of the wounds was evaluated and their areas were determined during the experimental period. The use of topical ketanserin showed no difference between the control and the treated wounds during a period of 56 days.
