Abstract The scarcity of high-purity limestone subjects the cement industry to consider alternative supplementary cementitious materials for cement production. This research aimed to investigate the mechanical properties and the hydration kinetics of cement pastes in the presence of high levels and different fineness of dolomite, especially the formation of thaumasite. A dolomite filler with 20% magnesium oxide, with average diameters of 10 µm, 6 µm and 4 µm was used as a partial replacement for Portland cement at 0%, 15% and 35% in cement pastes cured at 5 ºC and 20 ºC. The results of compressive strength showed similarities in all pastes analyzed, but the fineness of the dolomite showed a significant difference between the strengths obtained. The isothermal calorimetry indicated that the presence of dolomite had a nucleation and dilution effect. The thermogravimetry revealed that dependent of the substitution levels, the pastes with dolomite presented significant differences in the amount of ettringite and carbonate phases. The mineralogical analysis detected the presence of thaumasite only at the temperature of 20 ºC, which this mineral can also form at higher temperatures than those reported in the literature. Finally, we conclude positively about the possibility of using dolomite in cementitious matrices at levels up to 35%, regardless of fineness and curing temperature.

Resumo A escassez de calcário de alta pureza sujeita a indústria cimenteira a considerar materiais cimentícios suplementares alternativos para a produção de cimentos. Esta pesquisa buscou investigar a cinética de hidratação e as propriedades de pastas cimentícias na presença de elevados teores e diferentes finuras de dolomita, em especial à formação de taumasita. Adotou-se um fíler dolomítico com 20% de óxido de magnésio, de diâmetros médios de 10 µm, 6 µm e 4 µm como substituto parcial do cimento Portland nos teores 0%, 15% e 35% em pastas cimentícias curadas a 5 ºC e 20 ºC. Os resultados de resistência à compressão apresentaram semelhanças em todas as pastas analisadas, mas a finura da dolomita mostrou uma diferença significativa entre as médias de resistências obtidas. A calorimetria isotérmica apontou que a presença de dolomita apresentou efeito de nucleação e diluição. A termogravimetria revelou que dependente dos teores de substituição, as pastas com dolomita apresentaram diferenças significativas na quantidade de fases de etringita e carbonatos. A análise mineralógica detectou a presença de taumasita apenas na temperatura de 20 ºC, em que esse mineral também pode se formar em temperaturas mais elevadas do que as temperaturas relatadas na literatura. Por fim, conclui-se positivamente sobre a possibilidade de utilização de dolomita em matrizes cimentícias em teores de até 35%, independente da finura e da temperatura de cura.

Abstract Alternatives to conventional Portland cement with a more sustainable appeal are increasingly recurrent. Among these are the Limestone Calcined Clay (LC3) systems, characterized by high replacement percentages of Portland clinker by calcined clay and limestone, materials widely available worldwide. A complete understanding of the rheological behavior of LC3 systems is necessary for the practical application of this type of cement to be consolidated. Furthermore, although not yet investigated, the incorporation of nanomaterials stands out as a promising alternative for accelerating reactions and enhancing the mechanical performance of these systems at early ages. This study investigated the incorporation of carbon nanotubes (CNT) contents from 0.05 to 0.125% in an LC3 system through rotational rheometry, isothermal calorimetry, compressive strength at 7 and 28 days, and X-ray diffraction. Although the CNT incorporation increased the dynamic yield stress and equivalent viscosity of the LC3 pastes, the content of 0.1 wt.% slightly increased and anticipated the occurrence of the main peak of the aluminates. Increases of up to 13.5% in compressive strength at 7 and 28 days of hydration were observed for a CNT content of 0.1 wt.%.

Resumo Alternativas ao cimento Portland convencional com apelo mais sustentável são cada vez mais recorrentes. Entre elas estão os sistemas Limestone Calcined Clay (LC3), caracterizados por altos percentuais de substituição do clínquer Portland por argila calcinada e calcário, materiais amplamente disponíveis em todo o mundo. Um completo entendimento do comportamento reológico dos sistemas LC3 é necessário para que a aplicação prática deste tipo de cimento seja consolidada. Além disso, embora ainda não investigada, a incorporação de nanomateriais se destaca como uma alternativa promissora para acelerar reações e melhorar o desempenho mecânico desses sistemas em idades precoces. Este estudo investigou a incorporação de teores de nanotubos de carbono (CNT) de 0,05 a 0,125% em um sistema LC3 por meio de reometria rotacional, calorimetria isotérmica, resistência à compressão aos 7 e 28 dias e difração de raios-X. Embora a incorporação de CNT tenha aumentado a tensão de escoamento e a viscosidade equivalente das pastas LC3, o teor de 0,1% aumentou ligeiramente e antecipou a ocorrência do pico principal dos aluminatos. Aumentos de até 13,5% na resistência à compressão aos 7 e 28 dias de hidratação foram observados para um teor de CNT de 0,1% em massa.

Abstract This study aimed to identify the influence of replacing coarse natural aggregate with coarse recycled concrete aggregate on the thickness and volume of the cementitious paste under the variation of the water/cement ratio in the fresh and hardened properties of pervious concrete. The determined theoretical paste thickness was inefficient for pervious concrete dosage. However, it was found that the paste volume was the parameter that was best related to the mechanical and permeability properties of the studied material. Pervious concrete with natural aggregates showed higher compressive strength than concrete with recycled aggregates, although both met the regulations. All the concretes produced, except one with recycled aggregate of w/c ratio 0.25, reached the tensile strength in the minimum design bending. Pervious concrete with recycled aggregates showed more significant mass loss by abrasion and more porosity than concretes with natural aggregates. Finally, all pervious concretes presented permeability coefficients greater than the lower limit determined by the standard.

Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo identificar a influência da substituição do agregado graúdo natural por agregado graúdo reciclado de concreto na espessura e no volume da pasta cimentícia sob a variação da relação água/cimento nas propriedades frescas e endurecidas do concreto permeável. A espessura teórica da pasta determinada foi ineficiente para dosagem de concreto permeável. Porém, constatou-se que o volume da pasta foi o parâmetro que melhor se relacionou com as propriedades mecânicas e de permeabilidade do material estudado. O concreto permeável com agregados naturais apresentou maior resistência à compressão que o concreto com agregados reciclados, mas ambos atenderam às normas vigentes. Todos os concretos produzidos, exceto com agregado reciclado de relação a/c 0,25, atingiram a resistência à tração na flexão mínima de projeto. O concreto permeável com agregados reciclados apresentou perda de massa mais significativa por abrasão e foi mais poroso que o concreto com agregados naturais. Por fim, todos os concretos permeáveis apresentaram coeficientes de permeabilidade superiores ao limite inferior determinado pela norma.

Resumo Este estudo analisa, por meio do custo do ciclo de vida e da avaliação do ciclo de vida, a produção de misturas binárias de concreto constituídas por pozolanas artificiais e resíduos de demolição de concreto. Foram desenvolvidas dez formulações diferenciando-as quanto aos traços, conteúdo de ligantes e agregados, a fim de verificar o potencial emprego em pilares de concreto, tendo sido, portanto, adotado como sendo a unidade funcional do estudo. As devidas substituições foram de 25% de cimento Portland por cinza volante e cinza de casca de arroz, além de substituições de 15% e 30% de agregados graúdos naturais por resíduos de demolição de concreto. Os resultados evidenciam que as misturas com pozolanas e resíduos de demolição apresentaram uma maior resistência de penetração de cloretos, o menor custo de concreto foi alcançado na maior resistência característica de 35 MPa e que o concreto contendo 15% de substituição do agregado graúdo natural pelo agregado reciclado de concreto e substituição de 25% de cimento por cinza de casca de arroz pode ser classificado como o mais sustentável, principalmente em emissões de dióxido de carbono, dentre as misturas estudadas.

Abstract This study analyses, by means of lifespan cost and lifespan assessment, the production of binary concrete admixtures compound by artificial pozzolan and concrete demolition waste. Ten formulations were developed, differentiating them in terms of mixtures, binder and aggregate content, in order to verify their potential use in concrete columns. The replacements were 25% of Portland cement for fly ash and rice husk ash, 15% and 30% of natural coarse aggregates for concrete demolition waste. The results revealed that the mixtures with pozzolan and demolition waste showed higher resistance to chloride penetration. The lowest concrete cost was achieved in the highest compressive strength (35 MPa) and the concrete admixture containing 15% replacement of the natural coarse aggregate by the recycled concrete aggregate and 25% substitution of cement by rice husk ash can be classified as the most environmentally sustainable one, especially in carbon dioxide emissions, among the mixtures studied.

ABSTRACT The ornamental rock industry generates millions of tons of waste in different stages of rock processing. These wastes are stored or disposed of inadequately, which causes environmental degradation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the concomitant use of ornamental rock processing sludge as partial replacement of Portland cement in contents of 0%, 5%, 10% and 20% and of recycled stone aggregate as total replacement of coarse natural aggregates in the production and performance of granilite concrete plates. Four concrete formulations were produced with different replacement contents and their characteristics were determined through tests of axial compression strength, flexural tensile strength, water absorption, impact strength and strength to stains. Mechanical results were inversely proportional: the higher the sludge replacement content, the higher the axial compression strength and the lower the flexural tensile strength. Water absorption tests showed a gradual decrease with an increase in sludge replacement, impact tests showed that the plates performed better at resisting shocks best up to a height of 50 cm and, in terms of stain resistance, multi-use products and butoxyethanol-based stain remover were more efficient on waterproofed granilite concretes and natural rock pieces, respectively. It was possible to conclude that it was viable to use up to 20% replacement of the aforementioned wastes in conventional concrete, with additional minimization of environmental impact associated with the extraction and processing of ornamental stones.

Resumo A presente investigação objetiva analisar a utilização de materiais pozolânicos e resíduos de demolição de concreto nas propriedades mecânicas e de durabilidade em concretos com misturas binárias. Foram produzidas dez formulações, distinguindo-as em diferentes traços com o uso de diferentes cimentos Portland, diferentes pozolanas e agregados graúdos da demolição de concretos, a fim de verificar suas particularidades através dos ensaios de resistência à compressão axial, módulo de elasticidade longitudinal e penetração de íons cloreto por imersão. As substituições de materiais se deram em 15 e 30% do agregado graúdo natural por resíduos de demolição de concreto e em substituições de 25% do aglomerante por cinza de casca de arroz e cinza volante para as misturas binárias. Os resultados evidenciaram que nos testes de resistências à compressão axial e módulo de elasticidade dos concretos, os valores finais foram afetados pelo uso dos resíduos de demolição, todavia balanceados com o uso dos materiais cimentícios suplementares. Quanto ao ensaio de durabilidade, verificou-se que os menores coeficientes ocorreram nos traços com a utilização do CP V-ARI, juntamente com as pozolanas, nas misturas com substituições parciais do agregado natural por agregado reciclado em 15%. Pôde-se concluir, contudo, a viabilidade da utilização de agregados reciclados em concretos, porém condicionados com o uso concomitante de materiais pozolânicos.

Abstract The objective of this study is to analyse the use of binary mixtures of pozzolanic materials and concrete demolition waste in concrete mixtures, especially the resulting mechanical properties and durability. A total of ten concrete formulations were produced distinguishing them in different types using different Portland cements, different artificial pozzolans and coarse aggregates from concrete demolition. The particular properties of each formulation were verified by testing the axial compressive strength, longitudinal modulus of elasticity and penetration of chloride under immersion. Substitutions were of 15% w.t. and 30% w.t. natural coarse aggregate substituted with concrete demolition waste and, in the case of binary mixtures, additional 25% w.t. of the binder agglomerate substituted with rice husk ash or fly ash. Results showed that the final strength to axial compression and modulus of elasticity of concrete mixtures were negatively affected by utilising demolition waste, but this effect was balanced by adding supplementary cementitious materials. Regarding the durability test, it was found that the lowest coefficients occurred in the mixtures using CP V-ARI, together with artificial pozzolans, in mixtures with 15% w.t. substitution of natural aggregate with recycled aggregate. It was concluded that using recycled aggregates in concrete is viable but conditioned to the concomitant use of pozzolanic materials.

RESUMO O objetivo geral desta pesquisa foi avaliar o emprego do resíduo de Etileno Acetato de Vinila (E.V.A), proveniente da indústria calçadista, como agregado leve em substituição parcial ao agregado miúdo natural na produção de blocos intertravados de concreto para pavimentação de calçadas e áreas de passeios de pedestres. Para isso, foram confeccionadas três formulações de concretos contendo resíduos com diferentes porcentagens de substituição em volume e uma formulação de referência (sem resíduo). No estado fresco, realizou-se o ensaio de abatimento do tronco de cone. Já no estado endurecido, fez-se a inspeção visual e a análise dimensional dos blocos, o ensaio de resistência à compressão aos 7, 28 e 56 dias de idade, bem como o ensaio de absorção de água aos 28 e 56 dias. Foi possível concluir que a substituição de agregados miúdos naturais pelo resíduo de E.V.A em determinados percentuais (até 30%) tende a promover elevada perda de resistência mecânica e a limitar o uso dos blocos intertravados para tráfegos com baixas solicitações. Os resultados demonstraram ainda que, embora haja limitações de volume de substituição de agregado natural por E.V.A, a redução de custo de produção torna a aplicação do resíduo tecnicamente e economicamente viável.

ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to evaluate the use of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) residue, from the footwear industry, as a lightweight aggregate in partial replacement with the natural kid's aggregate in the production of interlocking concrete blocks for paving sidewalks and walking areas of pedestrians. For this, three concrete formulations containing residues with different percentages of volume substitution and a reference formulation (without residue) were developed. The cone trunk abatement test was performed in the fresh state. In the hardened state, the visual inspection and dimensional analysis of the blocks, the compressive strength test at 7, 28 and 56 days of age, as well as the water absorption test at 28 and 56 days were performed. It was concluded that the substitution of natural minute aggregates by the E.V.A residue in certain percentages (up to 30%) tends to promote high loss of mechanical strength and limit the use of interlocking blocks for low demand traffic. The results also showed that, although there are limitations on the volume of natural agregate substitution per E.V.A, the reduction of production costs makes the application of the waste technically and economically viable.
