Abstract Background: In institutionalized elderly people, urinary tract infections are the most common, involving 12% to 30% of this population, with at least one episode per year, where several risk factors influence their occurrence. Objective: To determine the prevalence of urinary tract infections in older people institutionalized in a private institution of social solidarity and to identify the risk factors. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional, observational, and epidemiological study conducted on a convenience sample of people who are institutionalized in a private institution of social solidarity and belong to three different services. Data was collected over 8 months, and the number of patients in the different services was recorded (n = 171). Results: The institution had a urinary tract infection prevalence of 18.1%. Although more cases occurred in women (p = 0.641) and people older than 75 years (p = 0.269), there were no significant differences. Location of hospitalization was identified as a risk factor for developing a urinary tract infection (p = 0.024). Conclusion: Out of the 171 people who were institutionalized, 31 developed a urinary tract infection. It is important to adopt educational and preventive measures.

Resumo Enquadramento: Nas pessoas idosas institucionalizadas, a infeção urinária é a mais comum, envolvendo 12% a 30% desta população, com pelo menos um episódio por ano, onde diversos fatores de risco influenciam a sua ocorrência. Objetivo: Determinar a prevalência das infeções urinárias em pessoas institucionalizadas numa instituição particular de solidariedade social e identificar os fatores de risco. Metodologia: Estudo epidemiológico observacional transversal. Os participantes são pessoas institucionalizadas numa instituição particular de solidariedade social e que pertencem a três valências diferentes. Amostra por conveniência. A colheita de dados realizou-se durante 8 meses, com registo do número total de utentes das várias valências (n = 171). Resultados: A prevalência de infeção urinária na instituição foi de 18,1%. Ocorreram mais casos em mulheres (p = 0,641) e em pessoas com idade superior a 75 anos (p = 0,269), mas sem diferenças significativas. O local de internamento demonstrou ter influência no risco de desenvolvimento de infeção urinária (p = 0,024). Conclusão: Das 171 pessoas internadas, 31 desenvolveram infeção urinária. São necessárias atitudes educativas e preventivas.

Objetivo: Determinar la prevalencia de infecciones urinarias en personas institucionalizadas en una institución privada de solidaridad social e identificar los factores de riesgo. Los participantes fueron personas institucionalizadas en una institución privada de solidaridad social y pertenecientes a tres servicios diferentes. Muestra de conveniencia. Los datos se recogieron durante un período de 8 meses y se registró el número total de usuarios de los distintos centros (n = 171). Resumo A acne é uma doença crónica, inflamatória e multifatorial da unidade pilossebácea, sem mortalidade associada, mas frequentemente acompanhada de alta morbilidade física e psicológica. A metformina, um antidiabético oral que diminui a glicemia, está a ser investigada como uma opção terapêutica no tratamento de acne em adultos e adolescentes. Os autores realizaram uma revisão baseada na evidência, de acordo com a metodologia PICO, com o objetivo de avaliar se existe evidência do uso da metformina (monoterapia ou adjuvante) no tratamento de acne em adultos e adolescentes na ausência de Síndrome do Ovário Poliquístico (SOP). No fim da pesquisa, cinco artigos originais foram considerados elegíveis para a revisão. Todos os estudos selecionados mostraram uma melhoria estatisticamente significativa nas lesões de acne nos pacientes que receberam metformina. Apesar do número reduzido de artigos incluídos na revisão, os resultados sugerem que a metformina pode ser utilizada como opção terapêutica na acne, embora seja necessária mais investigação. De acordo com a evidência atual, a metformina pode ser uma opção terapêutica no tratamento da acne sem SOP, com um nível de evidência B na SORT. Este tratamento demonstrou benefícios clínicos, particularmente na acne resistente a outros tratamentos ou em casos mais severos, melhorando o número e a gravidade das lesões.

Abstract Acne is a chronic, inflammatory, multifactorial disorder of the pilosebaceous unit, with no associated mortality but often accompanied by high physical and psychological morbidity. Metformin is an antihyperglycemic drug under investigation as a therapeutic option for acne in adults and adolescents. The authors performed an evidence-based review, according to the population, intervention, control, and outcomes methodology, to assess whether there is evidence for the use of metformin (monotherapy or adjuvant) in the treatment of acne in adolescents and adults in the absence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). At the end of the review method, five original studies were eligible for this review. All studies showed a statistically significant improvement in acne lesions in patients receiving metformin. Despite the small number of articles included in this review, results suggest that the use of metformin for the management of acne can be an option, although further investigation is required. According to the current evidence, metformin could be a therapeutic option in the treatment of acne without PCOS, with strength of recommendation taxonomy B level of evidence. This treatment has shown clinical benefits, particularly in acne resistant to other therapies or in more severe acne cases, improving the number and severity of the lesions.

Abstract In the modern world, cancer is a growing cause of mortality, but archeological studies have shown that it is not exclusive to modern populations. The aim of this study is to examine the epidemiologic, social, and clinicopathologic features of head and neck cancers in ancient populations. To do this, we extracted all records that described malignant lesions in the head and neck region available in the Cancer Research in Ancient Bodies Database (CRAB). The estimated age, sex, physical condition of the remains (skeletonized, mummified), anatomic location of tumors, geographic location, chronology, tumor type, and methods of tumor diagnosis were collected. One hundred and sixty-seven cases were found, mostly originating from Europe (51.5%). Most records were of adults between 35 and 49 years of age (37.7%). The most involved site was the skullcap (60.4%), and the most common malignancies were metastases to the bone (65.3%) and multiple myeloma (17.4%). No primary soft tissue malignancies were registered. The results of our study indicate that head and neck cancers were present in ancient civilizations, at least since 500,000 BCE. The aim of this work was to extract and characterize pectin from lyophilized noni pulp (Morinda citrifolia Linn.) at three different pHs using different extractor agents and to evaluate anti-viral activity. The extraction of high yield (acid extraction) was subjected to sulfation procedure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and proton nuclear magneticresonance analysis were used to calculate the degree of methylation of pectin from acid extraction and its sulfated derivative. The data obtained for the degree of methylation of noni pectin and sulfated pectin were 30.3 and 30.7, respectively. Pectin was subjected to acute oral toxicity testing in mice. The results showed that pectin had a pro-inflammatory effect, and sulfated pectin had an anti-inflammatory effect. ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze characteristics of the home visit (HV) in Brazil, 2012 and 2017. Methods: Ecological study, with panel data whose units of analysis were the Primary Health Care teams in Brazil, participants of the 1st and 3rd cycles of the Program to Improve Access and Quality of Primary Care of the Unified Health System. Descriptive, inferential and spatial analyzes (alpha=5%) were performed. Results: There was an increase in the proportion of teams that carried out home visits at a frequency defined based on risk and vulnerability analysis and actively searched for people with respiratory symptoms and women with delayed and altered cytopathological examination. Métodos: Estudo ecológico com dados em painel cujas unidades de análise foram as equipes de saúde da Atenção Primária à Saúde no Brasil, participantes do 1º e 3º ciclos do Programa de Melhoria do Acesso e Qualidade da Atenção Básica do Sistema Único de Saúde. Foram realizadas análises descritivas, inferenciais e espaciais (alpha=5%). Abstract Tomato cultivation is globally significant, demanding enhanced yields and biotic stress resilience for sustainability. Dwarf plant utilization in tomato genetic enhancement offers underexplored benefits. Yet, Santa Cruz dwarf tomato germplasm is unavailable. This study evaluated genetic dissimilarity, agronomic potential, and acylsugar content of Santa Cruz dwarf tomato plants across three successive backcrossings. Twelve advanced backcrossing populations (BC) and a commercial control (cv. Kada) were assessed, totaling 15 treatments. Agronomic traits and acylsugar content were measured, and analysis techniques were applied to assess genetic dissimilarity and backcrossing superiority. BC3 populations UFU-Sci#8, UFU-Sci#6, UFU-Sci#5, and UFU-Sci#1 excelled. Dwarf plants predominantly exhibited high leaflet acylsugar levels, suggesting potential for acquisition of hybrid with pest resistance. ABSTRACT Image phenotyping presents great potential for field experiment evaluations in tomato crop. Validating this method for tomato plants is important to reduce costs and time. Thus, the objective of the present study is to investigate the agronomic performance of tomato hybrids and inbred lines using vegetation index. A randomized block design with three replications was used. A total of36 experimental hybrids and 9 inbred lines were evaluated, in addition to the recurrent genitor UFU-57 and a commercial hybrid, culminating in 47 treatments. During the experiment, average weight, transverse and longitudinal diameter, pulp thickness, number of lobules, soluble solids, β-carotene and lycopene concentrations were evaluated. Moreover, the vegetative development of plants was analyzed utilizing vegetation index, obtained using remotely piloted aircraft. The data were analyzed using mean test and multivariate analysis. RESUMO O uso da fenotipagem por imagens apresenta alto potencial para avaliação de experimentos na cultura do tomateiro. Validar a aplicação desse método é importante par reduzir custos e tempo. Assim, a pesquisa teve como objetivo investigar o desempenho agronômico de híbridos e linhagens de tomateiro a partir de índices de vegetação. Foi utilizado o delineamento em blocos casualizados com três repetições. Foram avaliados 36 híbridos experimentais e 9 linhagens, além do genitor recorrente UFU-57 e um híbrido comercial, totalizando 47 tratamentos. Foram avaliados o peso médio, diâmetro transversal e longitudinal, espessura da polpa, número de lóculos, teores de sólidos solúveis, β-caroteno e licopeno. Abstract Objectives To evaluate the tuberculin skin test (TST) conversion in chronic inflammatory arthropathies (CIA) patients on TNFα inhibitors (TNFi) and without previous latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) treatment. Methods Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) with negative LTBI were retrospectively evaluated for TST conversion and active tuberculosis (TB) after six months of exposition to TNFi. Two groups were compared: patients who repeated TST (TST-repetition) during the follow-up and patients who did not (non-TST-repetition). Results A total of 355 CIA patients on TNFi were screened and 138 (38.9%) did not fulfill the inclusion criteria. Of the remaining 217 CIA patients, 81 (37.3%) repeated TST during TNFi treatment. TST conversion rate was observed in 18 (22.2%) patients without significant differences among CIA (p = 0.578). The number of TB cases was low (n = 10; 4.6%) and was similar in TST-repetition and non-TST-repetition groups [2 (2.5%) vs. 8 (5.9%), p = 0.328]. Of note, 30% of active TB occurred early (6–12 months of TNFi exposure) and the median (full range) time to incident TB was 1.3 (0.6–10.6) years, whereas the median (full range) time to TST repetition was later [3.3 (0.5–13.4) years]. The incidence of active TB was lower among RA patients than AS patients [342 (95% CI 41 − 1446) vs. 1.454 (95% CI 594-2993)/100,000 patient-years, p = 0.049]. Conclusion These results indicate that TST repetition is associated with a high conversion rate, suggesting the need for recommended treatment. The delayed repetition of TST and low number of active TB cases hampered the evaluation of this strategy effectiveness to prevent active infection. Larger studies with systematic repetition patterns are necessary. In addition, the study highlights the need for a greater surveillance for TB in AS patients. ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To identify risk factors for death from influenza A(H1N1), including the effectiveness of the vaccine against influenza A(H1N1) concerning mortality. METHODS A case-control of incident cases of influenza A(H1N1) reported in the epidemiological information systems of the states of São Paulo, Paraná, Pará, Amazonas, and Rio Grande do Sul was conducted. RESULTS 305 participants were included, 70 of them cases and 235 controls, distributed as follows: Amazonas, 9 cases/10 controls; Pará, 22 cases/77 controls, São Paulo, 19 cases/49 controls; Paraná, 10 cases/54 controls; Rio Grande do Sul, 10 cases/45 controls. These participants had a mean age of 30 years, with 33 years among cases and 25 years among controls. There was a predominance of females both among the cases and controls. Biological (age), pre-existing diseases (congestive heart failure, respiratory disease, and diabetes mellitus), and care factors (ICU admission) associated with death from influenza A(H1N1) were identified. CONCLUSION The risk factors identified in this investigation not only allowed subsidizing the elaboration of clinical conducts but also indicate important aspects for facing “new” influenza epidemics that are likely to occur in our country. ABSTRACT Objective: to investigate excessive daytime sleepiness prevalence among nursing technicians and the association with sleep quality and memory. Methods: a cross-sectional, inferential study, carried out in a hospital unit in the state of Goiás between December 2020 and January 2021. Assessments were carried out using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire, instruments validated for the Brazilian context. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyzes were performed. Results: the sample consisted of 189 nursing technicians with a 40.9% excessive daytime sleepiness prevalence. In multivariate models, excessive daytime sleepiness was not associated with sleep quality, however there was a significant association with overall memory failures. RESUMO Objetivo: investigar a prevalência de sonolência diurna excessiva entre técnicos de enfermagem e a associação com a qualidade do sono e memória. Métodos: estudo transversal, inferencial, realizado em uma unidade hospitalar no estado de Goiás entre dezembro de 2020 e janeiro de 2021. As avaliações foram realizadas por meio da Epworth Sleepiness Scale, do Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index e da Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire, instrumentos validados para o contexto brasileiro. RESUMEN Objetivo: investigar la prevalencia de somnolencia diurna excesiva entre técnicos de enfermería y la asociación con la calidad del sueño y la memoria. Métodos: estudio transversal, inferencial, realizado en una unidad hospitalaria del estado de Goiás entre diciembre de 2020 y enero de 2021. Las evaluaciones se realizaron mediante la Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index y Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire, instrumentos validados para el contexto brasileño. Se realizaron análisis de regresión logística bivariados y multivariados. Resultados: la muestra estuvo compuesta por 189 técnicos de enfermería con una prevalencia de 40,9% de somnolencia diurna excesiva. En modelos multivariados, la somnolencia diurna excesiva no se asoció con la calidad del sueño, sin embargo, hubo una asociación significativa con fallas generales de memoria. Conclusiones: los resultados del estudio demuestran una alta ocurrencia de somnolencia diurna excesiva, asociación con fallas de memoria general y la necesidad de intervenciones psicosociales para los técnicos de enfermería.
