Os objetivos deste trabalho foram complementar os estudos dos mecanismos genéticos da resistência e tolerância da soja à ferrugem-asiática e sugerir metodologias de melhoramento que permitam o acúmulo de genes maiores e menores. Seis experimentos foram realizados durante três safras em Londrina, PR, de 2005/06 a 2007/08, envolvendo cinco parentais e as gerações derivadas F2, F3 e F4. Foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com parcelas em covas. As metodologias propostas foram planejadas para superar as dificuldades do melhorista em selecionar genes menores na presença de genes maiores. Isto é resolvido conduzindo populações segregantes F2, F3 e F4 numerosas para melhorar as chances de encontrar recombinações favoráveis e submetendo-as à pressão do patógeno para aumentar a frequência de genótipos resistentes/tolerantes na população F4 ou F5 quando plantas individuais serão selecionadas para formação de progênies. Consequentemente, a frequência de progênies F5 ou F6 superiores possuidoras de alelos nos genes menores e maiores também será aumentada.

The objectives of this work were to complement the studies on the genetic control of soybean resistance to rust and to suggest a breeding methodology that allows the recombination and selection of soybean genotypes carrying major and minor genes for rust resistance. Six experiments were carried out in Londrina, PR during three growing seasons from 2005/06 to 2007/08 involving five parents and their derived F2, F3 and F4 segregating populations. A completely randomized design was used with single plant hill-plots. The proposed methodologies ware designed to overcome the difficulties breeders face while selecting for minor gene resistance in the presence of major genes. This is dealt with by breeding large F2, F3 and F4 segregant populations to improve the changes of the favorable gene combinations to appear and increasing genotype homozygosis under pathogen pressure to enhance the frequency of the favorable genotypes in the populations F5 populations. This will also increase the chances of superior F6 to appear from plant selection in the populations.

Os objetivos desse trabalho foram estudar a resistência e/ou tolerância da soja à ferrugem-asiática, expresso por genes maiores e menores e selecionar as linhagens resistentes e/ou tolerantes mais produtivas. Foram utilizados dados de seis experimentos realizados nas safras 2005/2006, 2006/2007 e 2007/2008, em Londrina, PR, envolvendo cinco parentais e as gerações segregantes F2, F3 e F4. Foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado utilizando a metodologia de cultivo em covas (01 parcela = 01 cova = 01planta). Os resultados indicaram que a resistência e/ou tolerância genética à ferrugem-asiática é controlada por genes maiores e menores dispersos nos parentais que expressam ação predominantemente aditiva. Os dados também indicaram que sob pressão de inóculo é possível selecionar linhagens de soja com produtividades de grãos superiores ao parental com maior produtividade de grãos na maioria dos cruzamentos, indicando que a seleção resultou em genótipos resistentes e/ou tolerantes. A herdabilidade no sentido restrito da produtividade de grãos, na presença da ferrugem-asiática, variou de média a alta (0,324 a 0,815) ao nível de progênies F3, demonstrando ser possível selecionar progênies resistentes e/ou tolerantes à ferrugem-asiática já nas gerações iniciais dos programas de melhoramento.

The main objectives of this work were to study the soybean resistance and/or tolerance to Asian rust and to select the inbred lines more productive in relation to Asian rust. Data from six experiments involving the parental lines and their F2, F3 and F4 generations were used in this experiment. It was carried out in Londrina, Parana state, during the 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2007/08 cropping seasons. A completely randomized experiment with individual plants sown in hill plot was used (01 hill plot = 01 plant). Soybean resistance and/or tolerance to Asian rust is controlled by major and minor genes expressing mainly additive effects dispersed in the parents. It is possible to select inbred lines superior to the best yielding parent from most crosses. The narrow sense heritability for the yield trait under rust pressure ranged from average to high (0.324 to 0.815) at the F3 progeny level, which warrants gains from selection.

O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar as estratégias mais eficientes para selecionar as combinações parentais mais promissoras e obter linhas com bom grau de resistência à ferrugem-asiática da soja (Phakopsora pachyrhizi). Dois experimentos foram realizados em campo nos anos agrícolas 2006/2007 e 2007/2008, para avaliar a percentagem da área foliar infectada em plantas individuais de cinco parentais e das suas populações segregantes F2 e F3. Os dados obtidos indicam que a variância genética aditiva predomina no controle da resistência da soja à ferrugem-asiática e que os anos e as épocas de avaliação não influenciaram significativamente as estimativas dos parâmetros genéticos obtidos. A herdabilidade no sentido restrito (h²r) variou de 23,12 a 55,83%, o que indica a possibilidade de sucesso com a seleção de indivíduos resistentes em gerações precoces nos programas de melhoramento. Todos os procedimentos usados para selecionar as populações mais promissoras na geração de linhagens superiores quanto à resistência a P. pachyrhizi apresentaram resultados similares e identificaram a população BR01-18437 x BRS 232 como a melhor para a seleção de linhagens.

The objective of this work was to identify the best selection strategies for the more promising parental combinations to obtain lines with good resistance to soybean Asian rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi). Two experiments were carried out in the field during the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 growing seasons, to determine the percentage of infected leaf area of individual plants of five parents and their segregant F2 and F3 populations. The data obtained indicates that additive genetic variance predominates in the control of soybean resistance to Asian rust, and that the year and time of assessment do not significantly influence the estimates of the genetic parameters obtained. The narrow-sense heritability (h²r) ranged from 23.12 to 55.83%, and indicates the possibility of successful selection of resistant individuals in the early generations of the breeding program. All the procedures used to select the most promising populations to generate superior inbred lines for resistance to P. pachyrhizi presented similar results and identified the BR01-18437 x BRS 232 population as the best for inbred line selection.

Os objetivos deste trabalho foram identificar genitores resistentes à ferrugem asiática da soja por meio de cruzamentos dialélicos, obter informações sobre o controle genético da resistência ao patógeno e verificar se as estimativas da capacidade combinatória interagem com o ambiente (ano ou época de avaliação). A geração F1 foi obtida por meio de cruzamentos entre cinco genitores contrastantes para a característica resistência à ferrugem da soja, em um dialelo completo, sem os recíprocos, em casa de vegetação. Foram realizadas duas avaliações quanto à severidade da ferrugem asiática da soja em plantas individuais de 25 tratamentos (genitores e populações F2 e F3 ) em 2006/2007 e 2007/2008, no campo experimental da Embrapa Soja, em Londrina, PR. Houve predominância de efeitos aditivos no controle genético da resistência à ferrugem asiática da soja, e a interação das populações segregantes com os ambientes, embora significativa, não alterou as estimativas dos parâmetros genéticos da capacidade geral de combinação (CGC) e da capacidade específica de combinação, indicando que as estimativas obtidas em um ano e uma avaliação podem ser extrapoladas para outros. A linhagem endogâmica BR01-18437 é resistente à ferrugem asiática e apresenta alta estimativa de CGC, e deve ser utilizada como genitora quando o objetivo é a resistência a Phakopsora pachyrhizi.

The objectives of this work were to identify parents resistant to Asian soybean rust using diallel crosses, obtain information on the genetic control of soybean resistance to the pathogen and verify whether the combining ability estimates interact with the environment (year or time of assessment). The F1 generation was obtained in a greenhouse from crosses between five contrasting parents for the trait resistance to soybean rust, in a complete diallel without reciprocals. Two rust-severity assessments were carried out on individual soybean plants of 25 treatments (parents and F2 and F3 populations) in 2006/2007 and 2007/2008, in an experimental field at Embrapa Soja, Londrina, PR, Brazil. Additive effects predominated in the genetic control of soybean resistance to Asian rust, and the interaction of the segregant populations with the environment, although significant, did not alter the genetic parameter's general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability estimates, indicating that estimates obtained in one year and one assessment can be extrapolated to others. BR01-18437 inbred line is resistant to Asian rust and showed high GCA effects. This line should be used as parent if the objective is the resistance to Phakopsora pachyrhizi.

O objetivo deste estudo foi desenvolver testes de alelismo, inclusive cruzamentos entre um grupo de genótipos resistentes à ferrugem, do banco de germoplasma de soja da Embrapa, e as duas fontes de resistência com os genes Rpp2 e Rpp4. A ferrugem-asiática-da-soja, causada pelo fungo Phakopsora pachyrhizi, tem gerado perdas significativas na produtividade da cultura e preocupado os agricultores brasileiros. Até recentemente, existiam quatro genes de resistência descritos na literatura, mas somente Rpp2 e Rpp4 continuam efetivos no Brasil. Vinte e seis fontes com resistência a P. pachyrhizi foram cruzadas com PI 230970 e PI 459025 (fontes dos genes Rpp2 e Rpp4, respectivamente), e as plantas da geração F2 foram infectadas com uma suspensão com 2,5x10(4) esporos por mililitro e analisadas em casa de vegetação após 20 dias, para verificação da presença de lesões de resistência (RB) ou de suscetibilidade (TAN). Foram aplicados testes de qui-quadrado para investigar as hipóteses de segregação independente ou de alelos de resistência nos locos Rpp2 e Rpp4. Genes de resistência provenientes de PI 197182, PI 230971 e PI 417125 não segregaram em cruzamentos com a PI 230970, o que indica que esses genótipos apresentam um único gene de resistência presente no loco Rpp2. Cruzamentos com os outros 23 genótipos resultaram em populações segregantes, o que indica que estas possuem genes que não pertencem aos locos Rpp2 e Rpp4.

The objective of this study was to conduct allelic tests including crosses between a group of rust resistant genotypes from Embrapa's soybean germplasm collection and PI 230970 and PI 459025, which carry the Rpp2 and Rpp4 genes, respectively. Asian Soybean rust (ASR) caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi has resulted in significant yield losses and concern among Brazilian farmers. Until recently, there were four resistance genes (Rpp1 through Rpp4) described in the literature, but only Rpp2 and Rpp4 are still effective in Brazil. Twenty-six sources of resistance to P. pachyrhizi were crossed with PI 230970 and PI 459025 (Rpp2 and Rpp4 gene sources, respectively) and plants of their F2 generations were infected with a suspension containing 2.5x10(4) spores per milliliter and assessed in a greenhouse after 20 days, for the presence of resistant (RB) or susceptible (TAN) lesions. Chi-square tests were applied to investigate the hypotheses of independent or allelic resistance gene segregations. ASR resistant genes derived from PI 197182, PI 230971 and PI 417125 did not segregate in crosses with PI 230970, which indicates that these genotypes have a single resistance gene in the Rpp2 locus. Crosses with the other 23 genotypes resulted in segregating populations, suggesting that their resistance genes do not belong to Rpp2 or Rpp4 loci.

Asian soybean rust (ASR), caused by the phytopathogenic fungi Phakopsora pachyrhizi, has caused large reductions in soybean (Glycine max) yield in most locations in Brazil where it has occurred since it was first reported in May 2001. Primary efforts to combat the disease involve the development of resistant cultivars, and four dominant major genes (Rpp1, Rpp2, Rpp3 and Rpp4) controlling resistance to ASR have been reported in the literature. To develop new long-lasting soybean ASR resistance genes, we used field experiments to assess ASR leaf lesion type in 11 soybean genotypes (BR01-18437, BRS 184, BRS 231, BRS 232, BRSGO Chapadões, DM 339, Embrapa 48, PI 200487, PI 230970, PI 459025-A and PI 200526) and the 55 F2 generations derived from their biparental diallel crosses. The results indicated that PI 200487 and PI 200526 carry different dominant resistance major genes which are both different from Rpp2 through Rpp4. Furthermore, resistance to ASR in BR01-18437 is controlled by a single recessive major gene, also different from Rpp1 through Rpp4 and different from the genes in PI 200487 and PI 200526.

Soybean is one of the most important crops in Brazil and continuously generates demands for production technologies, such as cultivars resistant to diseases. In recent years, the Asian rust fungus (Phakopsora pachyrhizi Syd. & P. Syd 1914) has caused severe yield losses and the development of resistant cultivars is the best means of control. Understanding the genetic control and estimating parameters associated with soybean (Glycine max) resistance to P. pachyrhizi will provide essential information for cultivar selection. We investigated quantitative genetic control of P. pachyrhizi and estimated parameters associated to soybean yield in the absence and presence of this phytopathogen. Six cultivars and their 15 diallel derived F2 and F3 generations were assessed in experiments carried out in the absence and presence of P. pachyrhizi. The results indicated that soybean yield in the presence and absence of P. pachyrhizi is controlled by polygenes expressing predominantly additive effects that can be selected to develop new cultivars resistant or tolerant to P. pachyrhizi. These cultivars may prove to be a useful and more durable alternative than cultivars carrying major resistance genes.

Dentre as várias doenças que causam problemas no cultivo de feijão comum (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), uma das mais importantes é a antracnose causada pelo fungo Colletotrichum lindemuthianum (Saac. et Magn.) Scrib., a qual pode resultar em severas perdas na produtividade de grãos. O controle genético, nas cultivares diferenciais Michelite, Michigan Dark Red Kidney, Perry Marrow, Cornell 49-242, PI 207262, AB 136 e G 2333 e seus 21 híbridos dialélicos, foi obtido usando a metodologia de Hayman (1954). Todas as populações F1s foram avaliadas em relação à raça 89, enquanto que os híbridos envolvendo a cultivar G 2333 não foram avaliados com a raça 31. Os resultados demonstraram que os efeitos aditivos foram predominantes para a raça 31, enquanto os efeitos gênicos não aditivos foram mais importantes na reação de incompatibilidade das cultivares a raça 89. Os resultados ainda evidenciaram um elevado coeficiente de determinação genética para a raça 31. Os cultivares G 2333, AB 136 e PI 207262 são os mais indicados para programas de melhoramento visando à obtenção de cultivares resistentes à antracnose por possuírem maior proporção de alelos dominantes para resistência às raças 31 e 89.

The aim of this work was to perform genetic control on differential cultivars Michelite, Michigan Dark Red Kidney, Perry Marrow, Cornell 49-242, PI 207262, AB 136 and G 2333 and its diallel hybrids by using Hayman's methodology. The entire F1s populations were evaluated in relation to race 89, whereas the race 31, the diallel scheme did not include the cultivar G 2333. The results showed that the additive effects were predominant for the 31 race, while non-additive effects were more important for race 89. The results demonstrated a high coefficient of genetic determination for the race 31. The G 2333, AB 136 and PI 207262 cultivars should be recommended obtaining cultivar resistant to anthracnose by backcross programs because theyshowed the highest proportion of resistant dominant alleles for the races 31 and 89.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar a interação de genótipos com ambientes no Estado do Mato Grosso, MT. Locais, anos, épocas de semeadura, cultivares e respectivas interações foram analisados em relação a dados de produtividade de grãos de ensaios regionais realizados em delineamento de blocos completos casualizados, conduzidos de 1994-1995 a 1999-2000, em nove locais e duas épocas de semeadura. Análises de variâncias individuais e conjuntas de anos e locais foram efetuadas. Análises complementares foram realizadas, dividindo o Estado em duas regiões principais e cinco regiões menores, respectivamente: Norte e Sul de Cuiabá; e MT-Sul-A (área de Pedra Preta), MT-Sul-B (Rondonópolis e Itiquira), MT-Leste (Primavera do Leste e Campo Verde), MT-Central (Nova Mutum, Lucas do Rio Verde e Sorriso) e MT-Parecis (Campo Novo dos Parecis e Sapezal). Locais foram relativamente mais importantes que anos na produtividade da soja, portanto, deverá haver investimento no aumento do número de locais ao invés de anos a fim de melhorar a precisão experimental. A divisão do Estado em regiões tem pequeno impacto nos resultados de produtividade e, conseqüentemente, na eficiência do programa de melhoramento. Desenvolver genótipos com ampla adaptação é uma estratégia eficiente de melhoramento da soja para o Estado.

The objective of this work was to investigate the genotype-environment interaction in Mato Grosso State, MT. The relative importance of locations, years, sowing dates and cultivars and their interactions was analyzed from data collected in regional yield trials performed in a randomized complete block design with four replications, from 1994-1995 through 1999-2000, in nine locations and two sowing dates. Individual and pooled analyses of variance over years and locations were performed. Complementary analyses of variances partitioned MT State in two main and five smaller regions, respectively: North and South of Cuiabá; and MT-South-A (Pedra Preta area), MT-South-B (Rondonópolis and Itiquira), MT-East (Primavera do Leste and Campo Verde), MT-Central (Nova Mutum, Lucas do Rio Verde and Sorriso) and MT-Parecis (Campo Novo dos Parecis and Sapezal). Locations are relatively more important than years for yield testing soybeans in the MT State, therefore, investment should be made in increasing locations rather than years to improve experimental precision. Partitioning the MT State into regions has little impact on soybean yield testing results and, consequently, on the efficiency of the soybean breeding program in the State. Breeding genotypes with broad adaptation for the MT State is an efficient strategy for cultivar development.
